Grand Prairie voters overwhelmingly supported a proposition that would maintain the city's sale and use tax rate
providing revenue for street repairs and maintenance
Proposition A was for the reauthorization of the local sales and use tax at the rate of one-fourth of one percent
The rate has been at 8.25% for the last 20 years and sets aside money for municipal streets
The proposition was for renewing 0.25% of that tax for another eight years
Voters also anpproved a proposition to add a deputy mayor pro tem to its charter amendment
A Deputy Mayor Pro Tem would step in if both the mayor and mayor pro tem are absent
This position would be filled by a City Council member and selected by the council
Another proposition approved by Grand Prairie voters was to clarify language and correct typos in the city charter
but the proposition would remove redundancies or inconsistencies
make any necessary language gender-neutral
and remove or modify any language that conflicts with or is preempted by other state or federal law

There’s a hidden gem for BBQ now open in Grand Prairie: Called Crowns BBQ and Sports Grill
it’s literally on a golf course at 3202 S.E
Though the golf course is typically open to members only
Crowns is open to the public and scans in people for free who are looking to get their BBQ fix
Crowns BBQ is from Felicia Davis, whose aunt owned the original Crowns BBQ, a once-thriving BBQ restaurant that was a staple in the DalWorth community, but which closed during the pandemic in 2021
"I grew up walking across the street from the recreation center to the restaurant and eat there almost everyday," Davis says
"My aunt and uncle worked at the BBQ place and learned the smoker and how to chop and slice brisket
Her family members also have a restaurant in Arlington called Crowns BBQ Phase 1
But she is the sole owner of the Grand Prairie outlet
She’s a sports fanatic and played sports throughout high school
so being a Grand Prairie local and knowing she'd be able to service the golfers seemed like a perfect fit
The featured meats include brisket
Baked potatoes topped with brisket and BBQ sauce for $14.25 are a specialty of the house
Davis describes her cooking style as “country backwoods barbecue.” She doesn't season the meat
“I allow the juices from the internal fast and the smoke of the wood to flavor the meat,” she says
"I don’t know why anyone would season a brisket
there’s no need to; the fat rendering in the meat gives it a sweet
There are also fried catfish baskets and sandwiches
plus breakfast items such as tacos and biscuits & gravy
Dessert includes peach cobbler and packaged pies from Arlington-based Mindy Lu’s
A shelf features grab-and-go items for golfers taking a snack break
with windows that provide lots of natural light
But the piece de resistance is the patio which overlooks a fairway
so diners can watch golfers swing or just enjoy the serene green environment
Davis is planning some updates that will include a bar serving alcohol
and possibly a fun indoor putting green for rainy days

Grand Prairie voters will have three propositions on their May 2025 ballot
one of which could lower the city's sales tax
But it could also impact street improvements in the city
Proposition A gives voters the chance to reauthorize the a quarter-cent sales and use tax — which is currently in place — for another eight years
Prop A is just one of three ballot measures Grand Prairie voters will weigh on the May 3 ballot
Here's a look at what each proposition entails
The reauthorization of the local sales and use tax in the City of Grand Prairie
at the rate of one-fourth of one percent to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets
The tax expires on the eighth anniversary of the date of this election unless the imposition of the tax is reauthorized
it's been in place in Grand Prairie for the last 20 years as part of an 8.25% sales tax
This proposition would allow voters a chance to renew 0.25% of that tax for another eight years
The quaerter-percent tax is used for street improvements. It has generated $81 million since April 2017 to improve 121 streets
and eliminate more than a thousand standing water sites
Grand Prairie keeps track of current street improvement projects that use this tax
and this year's projects can be found on the city's website
the sales tax will go down slightly and street improvement costs would be absorbed by the city's General Fund
The deputy mayor pro tem shall be selected from among the members of the council and shall perform all duties of the mayor in the mayor pro tem's absence or disability
The City of Grand Prairie currently has a Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem
would add a Deputy Mayor Pro Tem to step in if both the mayor and mayor pro tem were absent
The Grand Prairie City Charter amended to remove any redundancies or inconsistencies
This proposition would essentially edit the current city charter to clarify language and correct typos
A vote for this item would allow the charter to be amended and edited for clarity

Months after Grand Prairie ISD suspended its former superintendent
the district announced Wednesday that it has a lone finalist for its new superintendent
Gabriel (Gabe) Trujillo has more than 30 years of public education experience
with a long history of serving in Texas school districts
and has been both state and nationally recognized for his leadership as principal
Trujillo previously served in Plainview and Duncanville ISDs and spent the last five years as Nacogdoches ISD superintendent
where he was nominated twice for Superintendent of the Year
Trujillo also spent seven years in the North Texas school district
he held the positions of Director of Secondary Education
Grand Prairie ISD Board President Amber Moffitt said the board was "thrilled" to bring Trujillo back to the district
Trujillo’s presence will provide the leadership our students and staff need to continue to thrive and be successful," Moffitt said in a statement
well-respected member of our administration prior to becoming the Superintendent for Nacogdoches ISD
we are especially confident in his ability to interact with and gain the trust of our staff which is necessary to make change and move us to a tier of excellence here at GPISD.”
Grand Prairie ISD Board of Trustees is mandated by the state to wait 21 days and then will finalize Trujillo's appointment
with an expected start date in early April
The superintendent position has been practically vacant since former superintendent Jorge Arredondo was suspended in September of last year
Arredondo's suspension was followed by months of legal back and forth with the district after he sued it and its trustees
alleging he was denied the chance to defend himself against their claims and that the district violated his contractual and constitutional rights
Arredondo filed for a temporary restraining order that blocked trustees from firing him
but the order was voided when GPISD requested the case be moved to federal court
He was later removed from his position in December and in February the district approved
a voluntary separation agreement and release
Secretary Emily Liles was one board member who voted against the agreement
"Due process for the superintendent doesn't happen and the financial details of the settlement agreement will remain hidden from the community," Liles said last month
"This goes against everything this board has worked for and everything that I stand for."
Two months after the Grand Prairie ISD Board of Trustees removed Jorge Arredondo from his position as superintendent
the board approved a voluntary separation agreement and release during a special called meeting Monday evening
The separation agreement was approved in a 4-3 vote
The board also unanimously approved posting a job for a new superintendent
Arredondo’s attorney Mary Nix said in a two-sentence statement Arredondo appreciates the board members
staff and community who have supported him and their shared vision to "elevate Grand Prairie ISD."
"He wishes the very best to all," Nix said
Arredondo was put on paid suspension in September
He requested to move the case from federal back to a state court on Dec
Nix told KERA in an email the case was settled as of Monday
She said the district has no issue releasing the report with redacted names
but alleged Arredondo requested the report to remain sealed
"Due process for the superintendent doesn't happen and the financial details of the settlement agreement will remain hidden from the community," Liles said
Liles comments were met with applause from residents who came to the meeting asking for answers
Rodney Anderson told the board prior to the vote transparency was being "completely obliterated" with a "yes" vote
"This third-party report based on 40-plus witness interviews and two-plus-hour interview with a former superintendent had findings so serious that five members of this board voted to place him on leave," Anderson said
the public deserves to know why and at what cost."
On the cusp of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration and amid fears are over his promises of mass deportation
Grand Prairie’s police chief is trying to quell fears in his community
Speaking at an immigration forum at the Uptown Theater this week
Chief Daniel Scesney said his officers will not go knocking door to door or check immigration papers
“What we’re not going to do is round people up and take them to jail because their papers – we won’t even ask them
That is how things will take place in Grand Prairie,” he said
“My officers would not be using their time efficiently if they were driving around trying to find people who might have been born in another place.”
He said in order for his law enforcement agency to enforce immigration law, they would have to participate in the federal 287(g) program
under which state and local agencies enter into an agreement with ICE to act as immigration enforcement agents
we will not be a 287(g) organization,” Scesney said
His comments were met with applause and cheers from the audience
Scesney said he would use any available tool to target violent criminals
including transnational gangs such as Tren de Aragua
“We will arrest you for not turning on a turn signal and use every tool available to deport them out of this country,” he said
The forum was a collaboration with the consulate offices of El Salvador
the immigration advocacy group Proyecto Inmigrante
elected officials and representatives from community groups such as the League of United Latin American Citizens
Scesney said he was concerned more people were not at the event
Scesney said that fear could also mean people without legal status won’t report crimes
Consul General of El Salvador Milton Peraza said Grand Prairie is taking a good step to building trust in the community
we're going to help you out,'” Peraza said
About 47% of Grand Prairie residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, and nearly a quarter were born outside the U.S., according to the most recent Census data
founder of Comadres Unidas de Dallas y Mas
one of the groups that partnered for the event
said she came out of the forum with a sense of relief
“It was very important to listen to what was said and to return that sense of security to the community,” Mendez said in Spanish
“It’s important that crime is not normalized and that people are not afraid to report things to the police.”
Although Mendez said she would have wanted more people to attend
she said her organization and other advocacy groups plan to have community meetings like these throughout North Texas

Arredondo sued the trustees ahead of a scheduled Thursday meeting during which they were expected to discuss his employment
The drama surrounding Arredondo’s employment has roiled the roughly 27,000-student district
with rumors swirling on social media and trustees providing few details
He referred to the school board members’ efforts to investigate him as a “witch hunt,” according to the lawsuit
The restraining order issued Monday prevents the seven-member board from taking immediate action to fire Arredondo
The Education LabReceive our in-depth coverage of education issues and stories that affect North Texans
Arredondo, a Hispanic man, went on administrative leave Sept. 4, just weeks into his tenure. He was hired under a three-year contract. He started the job July 1.
Arredondo’s lawsuit alleges he “almost immediately faced resistance and interference” from trustees. It states that some trustees questioned the superintendent’s decisions regarding the reassignment of principals and the allocation of resources.
Some trustees “made disparaging and discriminatory remarks about Plaintiff’s race, national origin, and language, including implying that Plaintiff was favoring Hispanic students and staff over other groups which was demonstrably not true,” the lawsuit alleges.
District spokesman Sam Buchmeyer said Tuesday evening that the district hasn’t been served with legal documents.
“As a public entity, we respect the legal process and will review any formal filings once they are received,” he said in a statement. “As always, the district is committed to acting in the best interests of our students, staff, and community, and we will respond to any legal matters appropriately through the court system. Given that this involves potential litigation, we are unable to comment further at this time.”
The petition, filed in Dallas County District Court, argues Arredondo was placed on administrative leave without explanation or an opportunity to respond to allegations against him.
“He hasn’t had the opportunity to fairly defend himself,” his lawyer Mary Nix said.
The trustees’ moves violate his rights under his contract, which sets conditions for termination, according to the lawsuit.
“I am deeply committed to the students, staff, and community of Grand Prairie ISD,” Arredondo said in a statement. “It is essential that we uphold the principles of fairness and due process to maintain the integrity of our educational system and return our collective focus to providing exceptional educational opportunities for every student.”
Earlier this month, trustees voted on a vague motion to “move forward” with actions discussed in closed session related to Arredondo and policy violations.
The policy that trustees cited is related to discrimination, harassment and retaliation. Community members asked the board for transparency.
“This whole process has been driven by policy, and what the policy states,” trustee President Amber Moffitt said during the meeting. “I’m going to continue to stand on what policy states and making decisions on what’s best for kids, our staff and the community.”
Other board members criticized rumors spreading on social media about Arredondo.
“His professional reputation has been damaged by these allegations, and in my opinion, he’s not been afforded the opportunity to respond to these allegations,” trustee Gloria Carrillo said during the meeting.
She asked the board to reinstate Arredondo and allow him to do the job they unanimously hired him to do.
Trustee Emily Liles defended the board’s process and decision.
“When there’s a violation of policy — and in subsequent investigation that shows a violation of the policy — you take action, and you would expect that,” she said during the meeting.
The lawsuit notes that Arredondo wasn’t given sufficient details about any alleged complaint nor a fair opportunity to respond.
Arredondo wasn’t provided with a written statement explaining why he was suspended, according to court documents.

Construction of the cleanup equipment is expected to begin next year
but a timeline for the abatement process is still unknown
A spokeswoman for the EPA said it’s not yet known when the cleanup will begin
Both federal and state authorities have acknowledged frustration with the slow-moving process but said it is typical with this type of toxic site
EPA officials previously said cleanup could begin as early as 2024
which includes some of the nation’s most-polluted sites

EPA spokeswoman Jennah Durant said it is common for the abatement timeline to shift
“Sites that are placed on the National Priorities List are by definition the most complex cleanup sites that usually take years or even decades to fully address,” she said

District leaders announced Wednesday that Gabe Trujillo is the lone finalist for the superintendent job
He brings more than three decades of education experience
including in Grand Prairie ISD leadership positions
Trujillo’s presence will provide the leadership our students and staff need to continue to thrive and be successful,” board president Amber Moffitt said in a statement
Moffitt said Trujillo’s earlier experiences as a “well-respected member of our administration” make trustees confident in his ability to gain the staff’s trust now
Since 2020, Trujillo has served as superintendent in Nacogdoches ISD, a district of roughly 6,000 students. He will now take over a system more than four times the size.
In previous positions, Trujillo was awarded Texas Principal of the Year at both elementary and secondary levels and was a National Distinguished Principal of the Year.
The board is expected to finalize Trujillo’s appointment after the mandated 21-day waiting period. He’s expected to start in April.
The choice could bring some stability to the district amid leadership turmoil.
The GPISD trustees voted in December to terminate the contract of embattled Superintendent Jorge Arredondo, a move that came right around the school chief’s six-month anniversary on the job.
The decision split the school board and rankled community members as accusations flew about what factors led to his dismissal. The school board has not publicly provided the specific reasons for Arredondo’s departure.
More than a dozen Grand Prairie ISD community members spoke out in defense of suspended Superintendent Jorge Arredondo Thursday night – and criticized the school board’s decision to place him on leave just two months into the job
Thursday’s school board meeting was the first after Arredondo sued the district
alleging it violated his contractual and constitutional rights
Arredondo – hired in July – was suspended in September amid an investigation
Earlier this month the board voted 4 to 2 to say he had a violated district policy related to discrimination
but no specific violation nor accusers have been identified
Arredondo alleges he has been denied the chance to respond to the district and defend himself against the accusations
“I'm just here to demand that we get Superintendent Dr
“It is time to stop wasting the tax money and leave the superintendent to do his job
“Why are we paying him money to stay at home
You can do the investigation while he can still do his job
We have no time or money to waste in divisive politics.”
Samuel Cortez told board members that they’d chosen Arredondo in a 7-0 unanimous vote in June to do an important
“It’s too insufficient for us to be hearing he violated policy
Is it something we need to be concerned about
Speaker Angela Luckey-Vaughn countered that view
What is hurtful is that a few individuals want to make this about race and not stay focused on a policy violation.”
a judge granted Arredondo a temporary restraining order against the district and the school board that blocked trustees from discussing his contract and possibly firing him Thursday
as was laid out in an earlier agenda for the meeting
Grand Prairie ISD told KERA in a statement on Tuesday that it couldn’t comment on legal matters
but the “district is committed to acting in the best interests of our students
and will respond to any legal matters appropriately through the court system.”
A hearing on a temporary injunction has been set for Oct

GRANDE PRAIRIE - An evacuation order remains in effect for an area near a northern Alberta city but officials say the wildfire that prompted it is about 90 per cent contained
Emergency officials in the Grande Prairie region say crews are optimistic the fire southwest of the city could soon be classified as being held
meaning it won’t be expected to grow beyond its boundaries
An Alberta Emergency Alert was issued on Sunday
ordering people in part of the county of Grande Prairie to evacuate
Officials say about 100 evacuees have been registered
The fire is about one square kilometre in size
About 60 firefighters are extinguishing hot spots while two helicopters are conducting bucketing operations

Grand Prairie ISD wants its suspended superintendent’s lawsuit against the district to be moved to federal court
GPISD requested the case be removed from Dallas County District Court so it could be handled as a federal case because of Jorge Arredondo’s claims that he was the target of racial discrimination
he said the district violated his contractual and constitutional rights
The district says because federal law underpins Arredondo’s argument
“Although styled as a breach of contract claim and a claim that the District violated his due process rights under the Texas constitution
now clarifies that these two causes of action are in fact federal in nature,” the district’s filing reads
Attorneys for the district argue Arredondo’s claims that he hasn't been given the chance to defend himself aren’t “ripe under state law because the Board of Trustees has not even yet voted to propose termination of his contract.”
Arredondo was granted a temporary restraining order preventing the district from discussing his employment
said they "haven't asserted any federal claims
"I think that they were trying to avoid the TRO
which is void once they filed their notice of removal
and tried to avoid the injunction hearing" that had been scheduled for Friday
Nix said she expects to file a response to GPISD’s document this week to keep the matter in state court
It’ll then be up to a federal judge to rule on GPISD’s argument

Suspended Grand Prairie ISD Superintendent Jorge Arredondo has obtained a temporary restraining order to block the school board from possibly firing him during Thursday’s school board meeting
Arredondo filed a lawsuit Monday alleging the district and its trustees violated his contractual and constitutional rights when they placed him on leave last month after just several weeks on the job
The trustees voted 4 to 2 to say Arredondo violated a district policy regarding discrimination
Arredondo's attorney Mary Nix told KERA he wasn't given a chance to respond to the accusation
"We don’t have any information about what he has been accused of
so he has no way to defend himself and it is vital that due process is observed," she said
She said she's surprised by the circumstances surrounding the entire incident just three months into his tenure
“It’s hard to imagine what might be the cause for the board’s actions," she said
The lawsuit alleges Arredondo was the target of discrimination himself by some trustees
His petition states he faced early "resistance and interference" from some board members
"Instead of supporting Arredondo in his work to improve the district
which is what he was hired to do," the trustees "began denigrating Arredondo and both made disparaging remarks about [his] race
A spokesperson for GPISD told KERA in an email the district hasn’t been served legal documents related to the matter but that “as a public entity
we respect the legal process and will review any formal filings once they are received
"The district is committed to acting in the best interests of our students
The temporary restraining order granted Monday prevents the Grand Prairie school board from considering or possibly voting on Arredondo’s possible dismissal during Thursday evening’s school board meeting

Lupe Adelle Castillo called for transparency
“I would like to know what’s going on,” she said
Retired Dallas Police officer Gil Cerda told trustees their evidence needed to be solid
"I hope board members who voted for this action against Dr
Arredondo were 100% convinced at the time you did this
based on your knowledge of allegations,” he said
Trustee Gloria Carrillo said the investigation and rumors online have damaged Arredondo’s professional reputation
“This investigation has been extremely difficult for us that are on the board
Arredondo be reinstated that he be allowed to do the job that this board voted 7-0 for him to do.”
Board secretary Emily Liles acknowledged that trustees chose who they thought was the best superintendent at the time
but that the board has to “stand on policy.”
“And when there is a violation of policy and a subsequent investigation that shows a violation of the policy
The board plans to release a report with the results of the investigation
“The community … will see what the information that we received and understand the basis of the decision tonight,” said board Vice President Bryan Parra
