Growing up in London’s Old South neighbourhood
Lorissa Sinasac routinely would cut through what was then the old Parkwood Hospital site on Grand Avenue to get to her classes at Tecumseh public school
as she tried with her dog Nova to follow the same route she had for years
Sinasac had to turn around and go back the same way she came in
That’s because of a new gate blocking access to pedestrians
put in place this week by the property’s current owners
which operates the Grand Wood Park retirement home on the site

I understand it was probably done due to liability
but it seems ridiculous and disappointing,” Sinasac said
“It seems like they have removed a public area
They are not going to make any new friends in the neighbourhood.”
Sinasac isn’t the only Old South resident irked by the decision
who’s lived in the neighbourhood for more than 20 years
said he also would use the same shortcut to get to classes
also part of his walks with his wife Caroline Stewart and two-year-old daughter
He said he isn’t annoyed by the added inconvenience of having to walk around the property
But Van Eldik said the move impacts the sense of community and togetherness residents have enjoyed for years
but this is a very community-built area and blocking that off just kind of feels like this is now a restricted zone,” he said
“The teenagers definitely have an issue with leaving their trash
but at the same time it’s not like they put out a garbage bin for them to freely use
it’s not like they try to correct all the problems before they just cut everybody out.”
Levante Living officials would not respond to questions about the reasons behind the decision to close the passageway to the community
“We have no comment,” Stacey Yeadon Porter

Tucked away in an area northwest of Gurnee
suburban Grandwood Park fittingly calls itself "Lake County's Best Kept Secret."
which is situated north of Grand Avenue (Ill

An Ames park will now be named Ioway Creek Park to align with the creek's name change earlier this year
The Ames City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to change the name of the city's Squaw Creek Park to Ioway Creek Park
In February, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names changed the name of Squaw Creek
a 42-mile-long tributary of the South Skunk River
as the original name is considered derogatory to Native Americans
but the proposal wasn't considered until Ames resident Jasmine Martin applied to the federal board in 2019
The Ames City Council and Story County Board of Supervisors both voted in support of the change

Creek sign names have since been adjusted around Ames
but there were still remnants of the former name
The street was renamed Stonehaven Drive as part of the meeting's consent agenda
Council member Gloria Betcher said before approving the name change that people have asked for months why many signs and landmarks in the city do not reflect the creek's new name
The council addressed another holdout Tuesday: Squaw Creek Park
sits east of the new Grand Avenue extension and west of South Maple Avenue
But Ioway Creek Park wasn't the only name discussed for the park
The Parks and Recreation Commission accepted applications for a new name
receiving suggestions that it be named Sustaining Plotworks Park

“What better way to rebuke (the use of Squaw) than to name the park after a strong
accomplished and historically significant Native American woman?" the applicant wrote
The parks commission voted unanimously to recommend Ioway Creek to the council
as none of the submissions had direct ties to the park
City Manager Steve Schainker recommended the council approve the Iowa Creek Park name

IL — The Chicago area saw its most significant snowstorm of 2021 over the weekend
marking the second time in a month that some areas got more than 6 inches of snow
more than 9 inches of snow was recorded during the most recent winter storm
two towns in Will County topped the list for highest snowfall totals in the Chicago area
Harwood Heights saw 13.8 inches of additional snow
while Evanston wasn't far behind with 12.4 inches
Here is a look at how other Chicago-area towns fared during the most recent winter blast:
colder weather is headed to the Chicago area
including temperatures near or below zero and wind chills of minus 20 or colder
The deep freeze is expected to arrive Saturday evening through Sunday night
with most of the Chicago area seeing colder-than-usual temperatures between Feb
The weather service warns of increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia
"Guidance is pointing toward the first true blast of Arctic air arriving sometime over the weekend," the National Weather Service said
"It's too early to say exactly how cold it will be
but an early look suggests widespread subzero low temperatures and single-digit high temperatures are a distinct possibility
with lowest wind chill values well below zero
possibly to a dangerous extent for anyone not adequately prepared for the elements."
The forecast calls for highs in the low 30s for most of the week
with snow likely Thursday and a rain/snow mix Thursday night
Temperatures are expected to drop by Saturday
with a high near 18 and a low of zero degrees

As the Warren-Newport Public Library District joins with its communities to celebrate the arrival of 2023
the library is also celebrating its 50th birthday
Warren-Newport Public Library is looking forward to celebrating this milestone throughout the year with fun events and creative opportunities to reflect on the its history and envision its future. The library's events calendar can be found at calendar.wnpl.info/events
It was the dream and vision of the Gurnee Woman's Club in August 1971 to establish library service for Warren and Newport townships to improve the community
in addition to the efforts of numerous other community leaders
the Warren-Newport Public Library District was established Jan
With many societal and technological changes occurring
including the advent of the internet for public use
online resources for learning and researching from home
and methods of collaborating and working together both in-person and remotely
Warren-Newport Public Library has been ready to pivot at a moment's notice to meet community needs along the way
More than any other aspect of their services
WNPL strives to be focused on people: its patrons
The library is dedicated to inclusiveness and is committed to improving collections
and adapting staff roles to serve patron needs
Additional information about the library's 50th birthday can be found at www.wnpl.info/happy-birthday-to-us
The Warren-Newport Public Library District serves a population of approximately 67,000 within a 55-square mile area that covers all or most of Warren and Newport townships
Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee is about a week away from opening its doors to the future
workers have been going at full speed to finish the $8.5 million project that’ll include more meeting space
Library Director Stephen Bero said greater building efficiencies should benefit patrons and staff when the facility reopens at 9 a.m
The library last had a major makeover in 1997
“We are anticipating we are going to get inundated with business once we reopen,” Bero said while on a recent sneak-peek library tour
Visitors will be struck by a new main entrance toward the library’s west side featuring a rain garden that’ll soak water runoff from the roof
A Friends of the Library store and an expansive circulation desk will be near the entrance
Teenagers should be satisfied with the new-look library
because officials have tried to specifically accommodate them
Library spokeswoman Jan Marsh said the teen area will be named The Vault
which was the winning entry from a contest
Other entries included The Cave and The Vortex
better technology and more comfortable seating are among The Vault’s highlights
“We want to give the teens their own space,” Bero said
but we realize they have some special needs and we want to accommodate them.”
a reader’s advisory and reference librarian
said a new community room that will open could lure more visitors to Warren-Newport’s programs
Warren-Newport has been a frequent stop for well-known authors shuttling between book appearances in Chicago and Milwaukee
The community room will have a stage to allow better viewing of the authors or popular cooking demonstrations
“Now that we’re going to have this gorgeous new space
I think it’s going to really highlight even more,” Hoffman said
a best-selling author whose latest effort is “Lost Memory of Skin,” will be in the new community room when the library reopens Oct
About 4,500 square feet will be added onto Warren-Newport
Internet access and a welcoming wall with four large-screen televisions were part of that $5.6 million modernization
you think you’re going to peak with (patron attendance) and level off
but we peaked and we stayed up there,” Marsh recalled
People are really going to rush in here and stay here and continue to visit in bigger numbers and really enjoy the added amenities that we put in for the community.”
Warren-Newport has been on the road with its services since Sept
The bookmobile ventured to different locations such as a supermarket and church parking lots in Gurnee
along with a weekly farmers market in the village
so officials are contemplating ways to continue with the “Library on the Town” concept that was born out of necessity
the library district encompasses all or most of Warren and Newport townships

A “squall line” refers to a linearly-oriented zone of convection (i.e.
Squall lines are common across the United States east of the Rockies
especially during the spring when the atmosphere is most “dynamic.” A “bow echo” or “bowing line segment” is an arched/bowed out line of thunderstorms
All these terms fall under the more generic term Quasi-Linear Convective System (QLCS)
usually are associated with an axis of enhanced winds that create straight-line wind damage at the surface
bow echo-induced winds/downbursts account for a large majority of the structural damage resulting from convective non-tornadic winds
Transient tornadoes also can occur in squall lines
tend to be weaker and shorter-lived on average than those associated with supercell thunderstorms
Severe squall lines and bow echoes are quite common in the Ohio Valley
A sequence of WSR-88D Doppler radar images and discussions from some squall line/bow echo events across Kentucky and south-central Indiana are available to complement this document
