Seventeen employees resigned after the Granger Emergency Medical Services (EMS) chief was fired
leaving the department almost completely stripped of its volunteer workers and the former chief concerned about the welfare of Granger residents who need medical help
was fired during a special City Council meeting April 29
She believes her termination came because she was outspoken against a planned merger of Granger's volunteer-run EMS and fire services departments
The city planned the merger to address budget and efficiency concerns
She had been the chief of the department for one year and was previously with the department for five. In June
the Granger City Council unanimously approved reappointing Juhl as EMS chief
She earned a $500 per month stipend as chief
but the members of the community and the people that worked in the department," Juhl told the Des Moines Register in a phone interview Thursday
a town of about 2,000 just east of Saylorville Lake
currently has one ambulance serving its residents
The EMS and fire departments were previously one department
but they separated in 2023 to "let EMS focus on EMS and let fire focus on fire," Granger City Administrator Kirk Bjorland said
the council decided to merge the departments once again because of existing collaborative efforts between the two departments and in the hopes of increasing efficiency
Bjorland said the city did not intend to fire anyone as a result of the merger
but declined to comment further on Juhl's termination because it is a personnel matter
Juhl said plans to merge the departments were discussed at a March City Council meeting
She was outspoken against the merger because she didn't feel it would be more efficient
which also could make it more difficult to recruit volunteers to staff the merged department
But she felt the decision had already been made internally before discussions became public
"I was willing to sit down and work with them
to come up with a model that would work for Granger and figure out how to get the most bang for our buck," Juhl said
"And they were just unwilling to do that."
councilmember Jeremy Danilson made a motion to proceed with the merger and to appoint Tyler Rommel
a current member of the volunteer fire department
"I don't even know how we got to this point," said Juhl
who now works full-time at Greater Regional Health in Creston
where she worked regularly while also as the chief of Granger EMS
There are now eight certified EMS employees and six drivers who also work in fire services left in Granger EMS
Granger already partners with Dallas County and Polk City EMS to cover calls when needed
and the city will continue that partnership
Polk City covered 60 EMS calls in Granger in 2024 and responded to 27 in 2025
Mayor Tony James said merging the two departments is "standard for our area and towns like ours."
does not mean Granger doesn't support emergency services
The city has allocated $239,667 to Granger EMS in the budget and it spent over $350,000 on "a state of the art ambulance and command vehicle for EMS," he said
The city also designed and funded a $3 million bond initiative for a new public safety building in 2023
"The fact of the matter is that City Council
and our entire City Administration and myself are still committed to have quality emergency services," James said in the release
James also said that since he became mayor in 2018
the EMS budget has increased 303% but EMS calls for service have remained the same
"No action taken in the last five years supports any conclusion other than the City is committed to providing and funding quality public safety services," he added
James asked those interested in joining the public safety team to reach out to the city
A regularly planned community forum with the mayor is being held at 6 p.m

The City of Granger is scrambling to maintain emergency medical services after nearly the entire EMS staff resigned Monday night
following the firing of EMS Chief Jessica Juhl
Seventeen EMS employees submitted their resignations shortly after the council voted to terminate Juhl
Juhl’s dismissal came after the city slashed the EMS department budget and placed the department under supervision of the fire department
Mayor Tony James said Juhl was let go after allegedly ceasing to log her work hours and failing to communicate with city staff following a March budget meeting
Granger will rely on mutual aid while it works to revive its EMS department

I'm starting a program where I'm helping athletic basketball guys transition to the NFL ..
I go through a database of guys who fit a certain mode that translates to football and I think you have a chance of making that transition
New Carolina Panthers tight end Colin Granger thought it was a joke at first
It was early March and the 6-foot-8, 245-pound center at Coastal Carolina was finishing his fifth season of college basketball at his third school when he got the above message on Instagram from George Fant
Never mind that Granger hadn't played football since the eighth grade
feed him with his personal chef and train him with the hope that at least one NFL team would be interested
Offensive tackle George Fant (77) wants to help others follow in his footsteps as a college basketball player who made it to the NFL. Michael Allio/Icon SportswireFor Granger
it is the beginning of a whirlwind journey he never dreamed of
it is the beginning of his dream of helping other college basketball players transition to the NFL
290-pound basketball player out of Western Kentucky
adding him as an undrafted free agent and developing him into an offensive tackle
He is currently a free agent and has worked out for several teams this offseason
Fant wants to begin an academy for college basketball players
similar to the NFL's International Pathway Program that creates opportunities for athletes globally
"I was looking at guys like Jimmy Graham and Antonio Gates that made the jump,'' Fant said of college basketball players who became successful NFL tight ends
"I was one of the first guys to transition to offensive tackle
"So this is definitely going to be a full-time gig for me after football
and for our first and only athlete to get a contract three days after his pro day
Fant's dream began last season when a knee injury landed him on injured reserve in Seattle
he put together a database of eight to 10 college basketball players who fit the profile he felt could transition to the NFL
who averaged 7.2 points and 4.4 rebounds for the Chanticleers this past season
caught Fant's eye in part because of the way he attacked the boards for offensive rebounds
"Those things come from leverage,'' Fant said
In football you have to play with leverage
And offensive rebounds show you're a really tough player.''
Panthers' area scout Adam Maxie saw that at Granger's pro day
But what made general manager Dan Morgan and coach Dave Canales comfortable with signing this project player was the history they had with Fant when the three of them were with the Seahawks
going to Seattle was big because of the culture they had,'' Fant said
Them having the trust and belief in what I said
that means a whole lot to me and what I bring to the game.''
Despite not playing football since the eighth grade
Colin Granger is getting a shot with the Panthers to play tight end in the NFL. Grant Halverson/Getty ImagesGranger isn't the first college basketball player the Panthers took a chance on
Chris Manhertz hadn't played a down of football before going to the Buffalo Bills in 2015 as an undrafted rookie out of Canisius
He was claimed by Carolina in October of 2016 and started 26 games in five seasons
He recently re-signed with the New York Giants after starting 11 games for them in 2024
He loves what Fant is doing to encourage more college basketball players to give the NFL a shot
just the runway of guys in the past and their track record,'' Manhertz said
"Guys like Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham and myself that made the transition
Gates is the most famous among a short list of basketball players who went to the NFL with no college football experience. He became an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and is a part of the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class
said it takes a unique ability to become an elite pass catcher as Gates did
He reminded it's not easy to go from basketball to facing a charging safety on a pass over the middle
"The physicality and mentality is totally different,'' he said
I kind of just had to rewire how I approached my training
who played running back and tight end before putting his entire focus on basketball after the eighth grade
"I want to get it out of the way,'' said Granger
who was listed at Coastal Carolina at 6-9 with shoes and 225 pounds before adding weight with Fant
so people are going to get hit by me as well.''
Fant doesn't see contact as an issue for Granger after the countless hours of studying him on tape and YouTube videos
you'll see that guy's a banger,'' Fant said
"He's not afraid to run into the paint at full speed
"These are all things I'm looking for when I'm going through the process
I'm not looking for guys that avoid contact
[things] that show me you're a physical player.''
Granger is glad he took Fant's initial message seriously enough to follow up
instead of heading to Europe to pursue playing professional basketball
He believes Fant will open the door for others like him
He still can't believe five teams showed up for his pro day
it's incredible that five teams came out here to see you,'" Granger said
you never know what's going to happen now.''
What were the Carolina Panthers thinking last week when they signed a basketball player with no prior football experience
President of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan gave us a look into that thought process on Tuesday
Morgan chatted with reporters this afternoon, primarily about the upcoming 2025 NFL draft. But he was asked about the team's addition of new tight end Colin Granger
who was playing college basketball just a little over a month ago
"I think it's a good opportunity to fill out our 90-man roster," Morgan replied
who we're familiar with from our Seattle days
It's just an opportunity just to add a guy
and be open minded and just kinda try some new things and see what we have."
The Panthers announced a deal with Granger last Monday
Their official release on the signing noted that this will be the 6-foot-9
Granger split a five-year collegiate basketball career between Ohio University, Western Carolina University and Coastal Carolina University. His final game came back on March 4
when he started at center for the Chanticleers in their Sun Belt Tournament matchup against the University of Southern Mississippi
Granger came recommended by former Seahawks offensive lineman George Fant—who also played basketball in the Sun Belt Conference before switching to football
he was an all-conference selection (as a forward) in three different years at Western Kentucky University
Granger ends up succeeding in his transition like Fant—who has now played nine NFL seasons

(WSBT) — An investigation is underway after shots were fired early this morning in Granger
Police responded to reports of shots fired just before 1 a.m
Police are working to learn what led up to the incident
who the champion credits for his love of Jeopardy!
[The following post contains MAJOR spoilers for the Friday
Jeopardy! three-day champion Ben Ganger is trying to qualify for an upcoming Tournament of Champions by winning his fourth game
And his fate came down to a Triple Stumper on the final question
“Our champion Ben Ganger gas three dominant wins so far,” host Ken Jennings said at the beginning of the episode. “When I asked him yesterday about his vast knowledge, he credited something he once heard Jeopardy! legend Mattea Roach say about a ‘sticky memory.’ It’s working out for him so far.”
He came in with a three-day total of $76,415
The round started off with just Ganger answering questions
the New York Times reported that ‘many flee homes to escape ‘gas raid from Mars” after this famous broadcast.” “What is War of the Worlds?” Ganger answered correctly
Sabulis and Balasubramanian picked up the pace and started to answer questions
Jennings asked the three-day champion how he got into Jeopardy!
“I really got hooked on it during a certain Ken Jennings run in 2004,” he said
“It became appointment television in the Ganger household to tune in and watch your next round,” the game show contestant said. However, Ganger revealed that his grandmother is a fan of Jennings’ rival, Brad Rutter because they are both from Lancaster
That’s a sensible person to be a fan of,” Jennings replied
and Balasubramanian was still not on the board with -$200
He answered nearly every question in the beginning with Sabulis chiming in on one
Ganger then found the first DD of the round
“Her father Ajit Singh Randhawa was a professor at the HBCU Voorhees College in South Carolina.” “Who is Nikki Haley?” he answered
This would still give him the lead if he was wrong
“This capital lies on the Anatolian Plateau
3,000 above sea level,” was the clue in “A is for Capital.” “What is Ankara?” he answered correctly
Sabulis gained a bit more money with $7,000
Balasubramanian finally got on the board with $1,000
The category for Final Jeopardy was “Boats & Ships.” The clue read
“Nearly a century after her 1851 sporting triumph
she was a rotting hulk finally scrapped in 1945.” Balasubramanian wrote “What is Titanic?” which was wrong
“What is SS Rotting Hulk?” That was also wrong
Ganger’s answer was literally “What?” He wagered $2,500
Ganger now qualifies for an upcoming Tournament of Champions
May 5 to face off against two new champions
“Ben has been very strong. Congrats to him :),” a Reddit user said

Watch the 10 best highlight plays made by the Carolina Panthers in the 2024 NFL Season
Colin Granger put up 19 points for Coastal Carolina in a first-round loss to Southern Miss in the Sun Belt Conference tournament on March 4
245-pound center had a choice to make: Pursue a basketball career
or take a giant leap and transition to football
a sport he hadn't played since eighth grade
he signed with the Carolina Panthers as a tight end
The big man was recruited by veteran offensive lineman George Fant
who once transitioned from college basketball player to the NFL
Granger received an Instagram message from Fant and had to check to confirm it was real
"So, I'm not being played; this is a real guy having the belief that he thinks I can do something like this," Granger told the Panthers' official team website
Fant plans to jumpstart a recruiting business to identify
train and guide players he believes might be able to move from basketball to football
"I had an idea of what I was looking for," Fant said Tuesday
I started looking at certain statistics that I thought could translate to football
so I started looking at offensive rebounds
Those are things that I think translate over
You got to be a physical player to get offensive rebounds and also understand you know how to use your body
Fant transitioned from basketball to football at Western Kentucky but played sparingly in his one season as a tight end
He went undrafted but had caught the eye of the brass in Seattle
He played in two games in 2024 after returning to Seattle
"This is a program where we're going to be helping guys who play college basketball transition to football," Fant said
"I think the coolest thing about this program
this is not just like any guy that can reach out to me and get in the program
These are guys who I think can really make that transition
and it kind of sucks that I'm not taking every player
but I think that kind of takes away from how exclusive this is and obviously from my background
I think that kind of will take away from that
I just wanted to be that kind of program where we hit home runs
and we're not just taking guesses on guys and taking chances
These are guys who I think have the ability and the size and all the abilities and stuff to make the transition
this whole thing honestly has been moving fast
but our structure and everything is set; we just have to come up with a name
the most important thing was getting Colin ready for this transition."
Fant initially believed Granger could play offensive line, but once he saw the athleticism in person, he knew tight end was a better route. There is a history of basketball players excelling as tight ends, including Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham and Mo Alie-Cox
The 32-year-old Fant and his crew helped set up a workout for Granger in Georgia
who was eligible to sign right away as a free agent since it had been more than four years since he graduated high school in 2020
"This has been a whirlwind," Granger laughed
"This has been the craziest month of my entire life
I just think it's completely -- I couldn't do this without God
The early signing will allow Granger to be involved when the team opens offseason workouts on April 21 and attend the post-draft rookie minicamp

CHARLOTTE — Colin Granger was in the middle of his final college basketball season at Coastal Carolina
and planning his future playing in Europe when his phone pinged with an Instagram message
It was from then-Seahawks veteran George Fant
asking Granger if he'd be interested in transitioning to football with an eye on the NFL
including Granger not knowing who Fant was
sharing the story on Monday an hour after signing what he called a life-changing contract
the message was intriguing enough to take seriously
I'm not being played; this is a real guy having the belief that he thinks I can do something like this," Granger said
Granger turned his attention back to basketball for the remainder of the season
He kept up with Granger and his parents and let them know he felt strongly about the 6-8 basketball center moving to tight end in time to make an NFL team's offseason roster
"I had an idea of what I was looking for," Fant explained Tuesday after his first protégé had been signed
blocked shots…those are things that I think translate over
Seven games remained in the Chanticleers' season
and they needed to win them all to make it into March Madness
But it was also time to give Fant an answer if there would be any hope of training in time to join a club
Granger had already finished school the year before
He was taking a couple of classes to use his final COVID year of eligibility but didn't need the credits
he packed up his car and spent two days driving to Fant's home in Bowling Green
When George Fant was in college at Western Kentucky
the Hilltoppers football coaches practically begged Fant to leave basketball and join their team
Fant was committed to the hardwood for four years and named second-team All-Conference for three consecutive seasons
After realizing he could have a more stable future in football than basketball
Fant used his last year of eligibility to sign on with the Hilltoppers football team
He spent a year studying to become a tight end from coaches and teammate Tyler Higbee
appearing in 12 games but registering no offensive stats
scouts came from all over the country to see Higbee up close
then tight ends coach for the Seattle Seahawks
Fant was signed as an undrafted free agent with the Seahawks
he switched to offensive line and was even used as an eligible receiving lineman/tight end hybrid at times
He's now been in the league for eight seasons and counting
he knows what is possible when switching from basketball to football and what it takes to impress in a single workout
one that only those who have lived it can truly understand
on what is likely the back half of a career
Fant wants to pass that knowledge along through a program that
"This is a program where we're going to be helping guys who play college basketball transition to football," explained Fant
Fant moved Granger into his home in early March
all with the goal of fast-tracking a process that could change Granger's life
With just a little over three weeks of work — some guys spend three months training for Fant — Granger hosted a private workout to showcase what he can do even as a raw prospect
They honestly weren't sure if anyone would show up but weren't deterred by the possibility
deciding to film the workout and send it to scouts if needed
Reps or scouts from five teams made the trip to Georgia: the Panthers
The Panthers offensive coaching staff and front office
including McPherson and general manager Dan Morgan
were all part of the crew who first brought Fant into the league
They know the transition is possible and trusted his judgement enough to send a scout
they invited him to the building for a visit
He signed a contract before leaving the building
"This has been a whirlwind," laughed Granger in disbelief
I just think it's completely—I couldn't do this without God
The shock will have to wear off quickly because now the real work begins
and his athletic ability makes him moldable
He stands out even in a group full of professional athletes
which is why when Panthers defensive line coach Todd Wash walked down the hallway at Bank of America Stadium on Monday and spotted Granger
McPherson quickly jumped in front of his new project and told Wash
Granger could sign right away since he had already spent four seasons in college and did not play football in college
That also means he'll be able to participate in rookie minicamp but will get a jump start when the offseason program begins April 21
he's still playing catch up with those who have played football more recently than middle school
Granger's now scrambling to find a place to stay
so he can hit the ground running when the program begins
McPherson and Morgan were clear with Granger
Basketball players play up high near the rim
offensive coordinator Brad Idzik explained
As a tight end with a hand in the ground at times
Granger will literally need to squat and bend his back
It's something football players do naturally
Colin Granger began this journey knowing it would be a long road though
I kind of think I found my calling," revealed Granger

The Carolina Panthers have signed up for an interesting little (or perhaps big) project
As announced this afternoon, the team has officially added Colin Granger
Monday's release from the Panthers notes that this will be Granger's "first foray" into football
which follows a five-year collegiate career as a power forward on the hardwood
But this foray won't be the first time the 6-foot-9
225-pound athlete has tested out the gridiron
in a video posted by Digital Loc on YouTube less than two weeks ago
is Granger showing off some of his early chops as a pass catcher:
Granger split his five college basketball seasons between Ohio University (2020 to 2022)
Western Carolina University (2022 to 2024) and Coastal Carolina University (2024 to 2025)
he averaged 3.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest
CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers' newest tight end, Colin Granger
The basketball convert was a guest on Thursday
speaking with Dan Graziano and Marcus Spears about his unlikely path from D1 basketball player to a player with an NFL contract in the span of a month
Granger spent five years playing college basketball
As he finished his career at Coastal Carolina
he connected with NFL offensive lineman George Fant
The latter made the transition from college basketball to the NFL in 2016
Fant is now ready to pass that knowledge along
helping mold basketball players with certain skill sets into prospects for an NFL club
As Granger told Panthers.com just an hour after signing his contract
Granger reiterated the praise after asked by Graziano how this process came about so quickly
"It'd have to be George Fant," Granger replied
"He kind of just DM'd me...told me who he was
told me what he thought I could be and really thought I could make the transition."
a first-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2005 who was also the Louisiana Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year while in high school
"I give you a lot of credit for going and trying to make this happen," Spears told Granger
"The one piece of advice I'll have for you is this; stay low and keep your feet moving
you'll understand how to get in and out of places because you rebounded very well
I watched some of your clips at Coastal Carolina
sticking your foot in the ground and finding the open area
and get as good as you can get with your hands and where you place them and you'll have a shot in this game."

Graziano pointed out Granger is joining a team that has a legacy of basketball players moving to football (and vice versa), such as Hall of Famer Julius Peppers
He played in both a Final Four and a Super Bowl
Granger admitted he hasn't met Peppers yet but
"I've been thinking about other people that have made this transition
I would love to just ask him his thought process at this period for him
when he was in my shoes at this time of the year
and what was he doing to start learning football
