GRANTSVILLE — A new outdoor swap meet is set to launch on Sunday in Grantsville
and it's expected to draw some of the vendors who operated at the now-defunct Redwood Swap Meet in West Valley City
Some of the organizers were associated with the Redwood Swap Meet, but the Grantsville Marketplace
The swap meet at 512 Sheep Lane on the grounds of Burt Brothers Motorpark will open at 8 a.m
Plans are to hold the swap meet each Sunday
and organizers are thinking of expanding to Saturdays
The closure of Redwood last December came about because of plans to redevelop the land
and other smaller business operators dependent on the income
said he has encouraged many of the Redwood vendors to take part in the Grantsville operation
expected to draw 200 or so sellers on Sunday and more going forward
Gutierrez is not involved in Grantsville Marketplace and said he's scouting for possible swap meet sites closer to the Salt Lake City urban population area
The Redwood Swap Meet had hosted around 800 vendors
making it among the largest of the informal retail operations in the area
"Not everyone can afford to set up their shops at strip malls due to risk, time or money. The swap meet gives them the opportunity to do this once (or twice) a week without having to invest as much time, money and risk," Luna said in a message to KSL.com. He's not aware of any outdoor swap meets in the area that match the size of Grantsville Marketplace but said he senses demand and interest from both vendors and the general public.
Entry to the Grantsville Marketplace will be $2 per person. "We will have a variety of vendors — food vendors, sweets/treats, fruits and vegetables, clothing, tools, arts and crafts, jerseys, miscellaneous things and much more. We will be having music of different genres every other week when able to," Luna said.

GRANTSVILLE — Grantsville High School has been the site of a number of sexual abuse investigations against teachers and coaches in just a handful of years
Patterns of community support for some of the accused abusers have spurred some victims who experienced sexual abuse at the hands of school staff to recently come forward despite the immense pressure they say they felt in the past to stay silent
victims of sexual abuse and investigators to understand the ripple effects of what might be going on in the Grantsville community
based on numerous interviews and public records requests
uncovered some patterns of abuse and enabling
Some students who reported sexual assaults — and an officer investigating the crimes — were threatened
out of fear of retaliation by some in the community. One investigation was spurred by the attempted suicide of an abused student
and another was shuttered by the suicide of a vice principal and former athletic director who had been accused of abuse. Some Grantsville High staff
coaches and members of the community showed a pattern of rallying around accused abusers
while creating serious challenges for investigators. Some parents were forced to choose between reporting their child's sexual abuse and protecting them from community backlash
"It's what I would call the ecosystem of enabling, where others know about the misdeeds and inappropriate behavior of people in a position of authority — coaches, trainers, doctors — as I've written about," said University of Utah law professor Amos Guiora, who leads the Bystander Initiative focusing on the role of bystanders and enablers in sexual assaults

"There was a lot of weird stuff that went on in that high school."
parents and students flow through the school; those who graduate often return to teach or send their children
It's a community similar to many across the country
But that closeness has also been the source of pain for some seeking justice after being sexually abused by well-respected members of the community
staff and coaches attended the sentencing hearing of former Grantsville teacher and coach Richard Craig Harrison
who admitted to sexually abusing a 14- to 15-year-old student during the 2017-18 school year
crazy amounts of letters in support of (Harrison)" were submitted to the court
a parent of students who attended Grantsville told KSL.com
County employees — some of them former teachers and coaches of the victim — also appeared to support Harrison by sitting on his side of the courtroom for the hearing
One parent told KSL.com that a current Grantsville High School student cried in the pews when she saw her teachers there
feeling they were not to be trusted if the need to report arose
Deseret News)Their attendance was made public through Facebook posts by concerned students and parents
Close to 600 people signed a petition demanding those in attendance resign from the school in the name of student safety

An attendee who wished to remain anonymous messaged KSL defending staff
saying they were at court in support of Harrison's family — his mother and father still teach there
"There were people there who sat behind the Harrisons to support them and then turned and visited with the victim's family for 15 minutes to support them
And that's what everyone needs to hear and understand."
"When the girls and the young women walk into the courtroom and they see that people are sitting behind the defendants' table — from their perspective
that's a sign of support … that's a sign of abandonment," Guiora said
"You can rationalize it by saying: 'Well the coach and I were actually really good friends
our kids play together.' I understand that
But that's to miss the much larger picture of how it impacts those who are most in need of help."

Some teachers at the school pushed the boundaries between students and staff
and worked as the volleyball team manager her junior and senior years
"It was very cool and 'in,' to be tight with the coaches," Coates recalled
she felt "there was something there" between her and geography teacher Shane Heath
"We weren't working out while we were in the weight room
We were hanging out at his desk and he would get involved in gossip."
Coates described relationships between coaches and athletes in the small town as "familial," going to Heath's parent's house for a team dinner or watching their baby
Coates worked doing bookkeeping for softball games at Deseret Peak
I would just go over there to hang out," she said
"Just in the tower with him while he was doing his work."
Coates continued to work and play at Deseret Peak
she went with Heath to get Slurpees after a game

"I was still 17 years old at that time."

I looked at it as something we did together," Coates said
I'm looking at 17-year-olds and I could never imagine making a decision like that."
When Coates first saw the news about Harrison's arrest
she said "it sounded like the same situation" she had experienced
it was the health and PE teacher and he was grooming young girls and they were his 'best friend.' It sounded so familiar that I decided to report," she said
She went to the police over a decade after graduating high school
Heath was interviewed by Tooele County sheriff's deputies
according to documents from a public records request
An investigating Grantsville police sergeant wrote in an incident report that the interviewing officer said
"Heath had been brought in for an interview and confessed to the allegations." Heath
was placed on administrative leave the same day
according to school district spokesperson Brett Valdez
Heath was reported missing and found soon after by a hunter on Little Mountain Road up Miner's Canyon
The windows of Heath's truck were open despite ongoing rain
and the man was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound
"I've seen the community completely support him — like nobody talked about why he died by suicide," Coates said
"It was just this whole tragedy like 'gone too soon,' you know
and the whole town showed up for his funeral
They had a memorial basketball tournament for him."

Elsholz and her twin sister Paige Elsholz became "teacher's pets," she said
"What I found in the books and articles that I've written
in the cases where I've been an expert witness
the pattern is very similar," Guiora told KSL.com
Ware asked the young girls to be football managers
"I was never a sporty person," Paige Elsholz
"so why (Ware) started liking me and my sister and our friend so much
was kind of weird to me." The managers before then
the new responsibilities came with more interaction
and Laurien Elsholz said he was friends with her on Facebook
"Ware became a little too obsessive with us," she said
"Ware was always having us come into his office

said Harrison "was telling them to wear certain clothes like really tight leggings or spandex-type shorts," offering good grades in return
"He said the same thing to my daughter and then also my son's girlfriend," Holmes said
"he was telling girls that if they were sore or anything after weight class that they could stay behind and he would stretch them out."
Both girls told Holmes they saw Harrison "grabbing these girls' legs and you know stretching them out and then getting his junk up in their private areas while he's doing it … very inappropriate," he said
Holmes said he confronted Harrison and then reported the behavior to the athletic director — Shane Heath
It was only after a different student came forward in 2022 that criminal charges were filed against Harrison
Harrison was accused of sexually assaulting a student 10 different times in seven different locations around the school
Court documents say that after some incidents
Harrison would send a message asking the student if she was OK "and would tell her to make sure she deleted her messages and not tell anyone."
Harrison was accused of grabbing a student's rear "as they were in the weight room with a bunch of students messing around." A witness told police she saw Ware touching a student inappropriately during a home game in the announcers booth

(Photo: Grantsville High School)Paige Elsholz remembers an escalating pattern of abuse working as a football manager for Ware
She would be ordered to meet him in the equipment shed with the doors closed before practice
with the same thing happening in the bathrooms during practices
says two girls "disclosed the inappropriate touching on several occasions that occurred in Grantsville city that eventually led up to" an incident at a football camp in Cedar City
Ware was charged with forcible sodomy from the alleged Cedar City incident
Charging documents say Ware made girls take explicit photos for him
resulting in three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor
Tooele County Chief Deputy Attorney Gary Searle said after a court hearing that prosecutors were alleging Ware asked students to take photos on their phones and then show him the pictures in person to avoid a paper trail
"They would dress as he asked them to dress
take the photos and then show him the pictures," Searle said
The coach was also charged with four counts of forcible sexual abuse
Ware made a rule that if the girls cracked their knuckles in class
they had to take pieces of their clothing off in the equipment shed
according to a police victim interview obtained through public records request
and have them change in front of him in the shed
Police found girls clothing in Ware's locker after he was arrested
It was just really bad," Paige Elsholz said
"(Ware) would always threaten us with being football managers
you guys will be fired and you'll be nothing.'"
"He knew that we had never been anything in our lives and being a football manager was the coolest thing to us," she said
"We were finally a part of something and we loved it
Paige Elsholz believes she was "severely groomed." When she confronted Ware about their interactions being too noticeable
screaming at the football managers on the football field
she said Ware "used to be like a dad to me ..
I wish it would have stayed like it was in the beginning where he was like my dad."

apologizing for "(trying) to be your friend," the case file shows
"I am your teacher and coach and that is who I need to be

Paige Elsholz told KSL.com she tried to end her life by overdosing on pills following that text

Laurien Elsholz and another ex-football manager named Mary reported the sexual abuse of Paige Elsholz to then-Principal Mark Ernst
and he just had this dead stare on his face and he slammed his hands on the desk and he was like
'You guys realize that you guys making this (expletive) up will get him fired
… You guys realize that he won't be the one going to jail
For lying,'" Laurien Elsholz recalled
Mary told KSL.com she remembers "the hand slap on the desk when he told us if 'we're lying
we'll get in trouble,' … The whole time he just showed no emotion and barely said anything and stared at us while we were choking up."
who had been investigating with the Grantsville Police Department
confirmed being told the account of events when interviewing the girls
A spokesperson for Tooele County School District told KSL.com in a statement: "The account being shared does not accurately reflect the events of that day
Ernst said he did not slam his fist on a desk
nor did he suggest the students made up the accusations."
Ernst was principal at the high school from 2013 to 2017 before becoming an area director
He was hired as superintendent of the Tooele County School District in 2022
Guiora said what's important is how the students felt
"With respect to when the girls would come forward
consistent in their articulation — how did this person exactly react like that
Or did this person react like that?" Guiora said
"Whether a person in a position of authority reacted this way or reacted that way is actually not really important
What is important is what they felt — minimized
Laurien Elsholz said she and Mary "just went and sat in our car and I'm like … I can't believe what just happened
Ernst — wearing a Grantsville football shirt — told reporters he notified the school resource officer
the school district and the police within an hour of the reports
Ware was arrested and put on leave pending an investigation
I don't know if it's going to turn out to be true or false," he said at the conference
'I don't want to believe that this happened with one of my teachers or to some of the students I supervise.' Being a principal it's a very personal thing
And it's heartbreaking to see this happen."
the school is the heart of that community," Ernst said
It has been difficult on the administration
Former Grantsville High Principal Mark Ernst became emotional during a press conference on Sept
after the school's head football coach Curtis Ware was arrested and accused of sexually abusing students
(Photo: KSL-TV)Ernst said at the press conference that Ware was "very well-respected" in the community as a football coach
"One person told me (Ware) is probably the best football mind in Tooele County," he said
Former student Karma Newbold told KSL.com the school had a "send off" celebration after school for the football team headed to a rivalry game against Stansbury High School the day of the press conference
everyone knew it was in support of Ware," she said
"I knew that it was a very tight-knit community
I was shocked because Curtis Ware was not a good coach
his team wasn't winning," Allred said
Records show Grantsville won only one game their previous season and three out of 10 the year before
The day of the reporting was the last day Laurien Elsholz and Mary went to school their junior year
"Rumors were spread around the school that (the accusers) were making stuff up
And everybody believed that because (Ware) was kind," Lexis Perry
two other football coaches across the district resigned or were dismissed due to allegations of impropriety
The then-head football coach at Tooele High resigned in January 2017 after being investigated for having "inappropriate communication through the phone" with another student
according to former district spokeswoman Marie Denson
she would not go into detail about what the inappropriate communication was
A Tooele High assistant football coach was fired months later
after being arrested for sexual solicitation
Before the community showed up at the Harrison sentencing
teachers and parents packed the courtroom in support of Ware
"It was so horrible," Paige Elsholz recalled
"There were people standing in the doorway and along the sides and the judge actually had to ask people to exit because there was too many people on his side."
that Ware "has a lot of support from football players
but they wouldn't have fit in the courtroom ..
He's well-loved in this community and they definitely support him."

(Photo: KSL-TV)Another student who accused Ware of sexual abuse moved out of state to escape the vitriol
she would throw up in the bathroom before the hearing — so nervous and scared to speak out publicly against the coach
"When we investigated (Ware) for sexually abusing some of the students
I was blown away that the teachers and the principals and everyone at that school were the ones that were attacking us," Allred recalled
The girls involved in the case say they were told "horrible things" in grocery stores
they were told to kill themselves and they received death threats and social media posts begging them to admit to lying about their claims
I went to my profile on Facebook and people were actually tagging to my profile," Paige Elsholz said
A coach at Grantsville posted publicly to her page
writing that she will "look like the better person for just coming out and saying that you made this up
having the courage to just say that you made it up and you're sorry for what you made up."
Allred said he had to go into Grantsville High School and tell Ernst
I will start arresting every single staff member that talks to any of my victims."
"I'd gotten so frustrated because the staff members were making phone calls
they were doing a lot of stuff that was essentially tampering with the witnesses
and I remember telling that to (Ernst)."
Allred said he also received threats and public backlash
He recalled being cornered in a grocery store at one point by a Grantsville teacher and yelled at
He said he began worrying that community members may show up at his house to harm his family
Former Grantsville football coach Curtis Ware makes an appearance in 3rd District Court in November 2016
after being accused of sexually abusing students
is guilty of what I call institutional complicity and the complicity of silence
They cast their lots with the institution rather than protecting the individual."
Parents feared how their children would be treated
there were multiple students suspected to have been abused by Ware
but "parents refused to let the students talk to me," Allred said
"because they saw what we were going through as a police department and how the two students that did come forward were ridiculed."
"I remember one conversation I had with a dad
I remember him telling me that it's the hardest thing in the world he's ever had to do to tell his daughter to not talk about what had happened between Curtis Ware and some of the other athletic teachers," Allred said
but I know deep down inside that if my daughter talks about this
the damage that's going to be done to her by those around the school is going to be way worse than anything else.'"
Allred said he felt some school administrators "didn't want me to dig too much
I felt like they tried to direct my investigation in certain ways
I had challenges in getting video footage and some video footage magically wouldn't work
Just the way things would work out was really bizarre to me
that's why I kind of got the impression that (Ernst) was trying to keep me from stuff."
"I felt very stonewalled throughout the investigation," Allred said
"I just didn't have the support of anyone because I was an outsider
Allred said Paige Elsholz approached him and said
"The twins were so burned out with the process and having to constantly testify and relive the situation that they ended up just asking the prosecutor to give him some type of deal," he said
Ware pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual contact with a 16- or 17-year-old
and two counts of attempted dealing in materials harmful to minors
prosecutors agreed to drop the forcible sodomy charge for the alleged Cedar City incident
everyone just kind of acted like nothing happened and didn't want to apologize to us," Allred said
"There were quite a few teachers that felt that he didn't do it and he was forced into pleading guilty."
and he was sentenced to five years of probation
Ware had created a fake social media profile and began messaging Paige Elsholz
Ware "met up with (Paige Elsholz) in the mountains and had tried to convince her to change her story and not testify against him."
Allred was able to link a makeup smudge and DNA on Ware's shirt to Paige Elsholz
Ware pleaded guilty to an additional charge of tampering with a witness
Harrison has an outstanding criminal case against him
charged with two third-degree felony counts of tampering with a witness
in a separate wrongful detention case involving his ex-wife
KSL.com was denied requests to interview Ernst or Grantsville High School Principal Kenna Aagard
Emails were sent to every elected school board member
but requests for interviews were denied and funneled back to the district spokesperson
"The board does not deal with personnel matters dealing with staff," Tooele County School District spokesman Brett Valdez said
All attempts to reach teachers who were believed to have attended court hearings
or those whom victims said treated them well
were also unsuccessful and reported to the district
Valdez eventually organized a meeting with Director of Human Resources Charles Hansen
Hansen told KSL.com there are significant challenges with transparency when it comes to the handling of any allegations against staff
those who report have no way of knowing whether the district acted on complaints
due to student privacy and employment laws
there will always be an asymmetric flow of information

Policy states the district is not required to release "records containing data on individuals the disclosure of which constitutes a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy," but does need to release "information relating to formal charges against the employee and disciplinary action unless such charges and action are not sustained or are shown to be groundless or except as the data is already classified as public."
the Tooele School District released records of a former chorus and Spanish teacher at Grantsville High who pleaded guilty to lewdness involving a child for an incident at a Salt Lake athletic club in 2013
They also released select disciplinary records from a current teacher

and telling them to "contact male contacts in the student's list of contacts and send a text message indicating that 'I have wanted to tell you this for a while ..

''Rumor has it you may be pregnant,'" according to a notice of probation

The district warned the teacher of the "severely egregious nature of the allegations," which she admitted to and could be "a terminable offense from the district as well as civil action against you from the student and his family."

SALT LAKE CITY — Call it the battle of the swap meets
Since the Redwood Swap Meet closed last December, many vendors have shifted to a location on Salt Lake City's west side that ramped up operations when the West Valley City site ceased operations. Separately, one of the key figures who had rallied opposition to plans to close the Redwood Swap Meet, Cristian Carbajal Gutierrez, is hoping to open a new swap meet for displaced vendors in Grantsville
"I just hope it works for everybody because at the end of the day, there's a lot of vendors that rely on the income from the swap meet," said Monica Acuña, who helped organize El Suami del 801
El Suami operates each Sunday at the 801 Center at 1055 W
North Temple in Salt Lake City and it launched in earnest following Redwood's Dec
22 closure to permit the development of the land into housing
Carbajal, meanwhile, says the open-air initiative he's pursuing in Grantsville is in cooperation with former Redwood vendors
many of them immigrants from Latin America and around the world
The aim is not only to create a new space where they can sell goods but also to help teach them the particulars of operating a business in the United States
it's more community-based rather than business-driven," Carbajal said
"We're trying to uplift our local community."
Carbajal had helped lead opposition to the planned sale of the privately owned 26-acre Redwood site, also home to a drive-in theater. The efforts ultimately stalled and the site has been cleared with plans afoot to build single-family homes
townhomes and condominiums on the land at 3688 S
Visitors to the Suami del 801 swap meet in Salt Lake City peruse some of the tools and other goods on sale in an undated photo. (Photo: El Suami del 801)For the vendors, one of the key issues in light of the Redwood closure has been finding a place to sell, and as Acuña describes it, many have flocked to her location south of the Utah State Fairpark. The 801 Center is a vast
warehouse-like facility that typically features live music geared to the Latino community on Saturday nights
with hopes for even more and an expansion to Saturday operations by June
As at Redwood, the vendors — most of them Latinos — sell everything from tools and clothing to toys and produce, with more space to open outdoors around the 801 Center. Entry for adults is $2 and Acuña, who also helps run a digital Spanish-language radio station, La Mas Picosita
says Suami operators plan to keep it open year-round
Carbajal Gutierrez said vendors have also set up operations at other area swap meets since Redwood closed though he's hoping many travel to Grantsville when the site there starts operating
"It's all family driven," he said
His hope is that the Grantsville operation can serve as a business incubator of sorts
helping vendors so inclined work toward creation of brick-and-mortar locations
"We're trying to involve the vendors directly," Carbajal Gutierrez said

GRANTSVILLE — A former Grantsville High School teacher and coach was sentenced to a year in jail and four years of probation Monday for the sexual abuse of a student in 2017
was originally charged in Tooele's 3rd District Court with six counts of forcible sexual abuse
Harrison — a former Utah State University quarterback — pleaded guilty in November to one count of forcible sexual abuse
A female student had reported to police that during the 2017-18 school year
Harrison sexually assaulted her in different locations in the high school
according to the initial police booking affidavit
The girl was between 14 and 15 years old at the time
weight room and portable classroom," the affidavit says
"he vaguely remembers when he put his hand down the front of (her) pants."
Harrison also told police he groped the girl "as they were in the weight room with a bunch of students messing around," according to the booking report
That hostile environment was evident to former student Oaklee Collings
who is a year older than the victim and told KSL.com this week that Harrison continually pushed the boundaries with his student relationships
he would have kids come up and sit by his desk during weights class," Collings said
and there were plenty of cheerleaders that he would talk to."
She added that "it always felt like he was trying to be one of the students" and said it was not uncommon for him to have the phone numbers of football players and "tons of girls' phone numbers."
Harrison "would reach out to them on different apps," Collings said
"It was always kind of like hush-hush that Craig Harrison was texting you
but it never really seemed to be about treatment."
"I have known from the time that I was a young 14-year-old girl
that Coach Harrison was a pervert," she said
claimed multiple inappropriate situations were reported to the Grantsville High School principal and the athletic director
The Tooele School District issued a statement saying
"We take all instances of sexual abuse very seriously and have policies to help ensure the safety and well-being of our students."
A number of teachers from the high school and district attended the sentencing
when those teachers sat on the side of the defense with Harrison's family
Harrison's parents are also teachers at Grantsville High School
and then the other six to seven were current teachers," said April May
a parent of a current Grantsville High School student
Collings' parents were in attendance — her father
He said they "saw teachers that they've known since I was really young
a couple of which were some softball coaches of mine."
"They were with him and his family and hugging them and greeting them
They would not make eye contact with any of us on the prosecution side," May said
"Imagine making sub plans today to come and support this while the victim is one of your former students."
"Half the staff at Grantsville High School either taught (Harrison) or his siblings or has worked with his parents or worked with him directly."
May said the court received "crazy amounts of letters in support of him," despite the fact he pleaded guilty to the charges
"I looked at those teachers and thought
'If my son or daughter had to report something
they could not go to any of these teachers,'" May said
who wished to only be identified by her first name
said the victim did "not have one teacher or administrator there on (her) side." However
the parent saw an athletic trainer who occasionally works with her child on Harrison's side
that the teachers did not realize which side was which
they have to understand that there could be consequences and that they're sending a message
A man who drove from Idaho to support a former co-worker and was not connected to the school told KSL.com he never saw the teachers interact with Harrison directly
"While we understand that some district employees were in attendance at the sentencing
they did not represent the school or district in any official capacity."
The scene Monday was reminiscent of a hearing in November 2016 for ex-Grantsville head football coach Curtis Ware
Ware was convicted in June 2018 of one count of unlawful sexual conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old and two counts of dealing in materials harmful to a minor
He also pleaded guilty to tampering with a witness in a separate case
a class A misdemeanor that was then reduced to class B misdemeanor
after court documents say he pressured the victim into changing her disclosure
Ware's defense attorney Susanne Gustin said at the time
"(Ware) has a lot of support from football players
"many members of the community came out to support him."
Collings called it "disgusting" that the community is overlooking the abuse "simply because we sit by them at church
or because we knew so-and-so's brother from high school."
Harrison currently faces several felonies in other cases
after allegedly sending an email to his ex-wife in 2022 posing as a family therapist
giving "advice to his ex-wife that she should forgive (Harrison's) indiscretions and attempt to reconcile with (him)," according to charging documents
The therapist named in the email said she didn't write the letter
The man also faces two counts of tampering with a witness
a third-degree felony; and electronic communication harassment
Charges accuse Harrison of harassing his ex-wife and trying to convince her to drop charges in a separate justice court case
Harrison is scheduled back in court on Feb
18 for a preliminary hearing in those two cases
GRANTSVILLE — A Grantsville woman who police say has an extensive history with the Utah Highway Patrol was arrested Monday after witnesses say she was driving as if she was "fighting everyone" on I-80
was booked into the Tooele County Jail for investigation of criminal mischief and reckless driving
Both counts come with road rage penalty enhancements if convicted
Tooele County dispatchers received several reports of a possible road rage involving a Jeep Wrangler on I-80
From about Saltair to the state Route 201 junction
witnesses watched Loveless "tailgate vehicles
and throwing items from their vehicle at other vehicles
One witness identified a thrown item as a glass bottle," a police booking affidavit states
"One witness stated that it appeared the driver of the Jeep was 'fighting everyone.'"
Another witness followed the Jeep to a residence in Grantsville
Troopers responded to the address and arrested Loveless after questioning her
"A records check shows extensive UHP history with Ms
including a pending reckless driving charge," troopers noted in the affidavit
Loveless was charged in five separate cases in 2024 with various traffic violations
She was convicted just last month of careless driving and currently faces charges of reckless driving and reckless endangerment in a separate case
WEST VALLEY CITY — The site of what was once a drive-in theater and bustling swap meet has been largely cleared with piles of asphalt and concrete the only remaining indications of what was once there
"They did that quick," said Cristian Carbajal Gutierrez
spokesman of sorts for the many vendors who once operated at the site
Plans to sell the Redwood Drive-in and Swap Meet site
for redevelopment to a housing subdivision sparked controversy last summer
Many of the 500 or so vendors who operated there
including a sizable contingent of immigrants
clamored to stop the plans on the privately owned land
22 last year followed by the demolition of the large movie screens at the site about a month ago and clearing of the 26-acre expanse
They still look for it," said Maritza Mojica
who works at a bakery in a shopping center near the former Redwood site
and Carbajal Gutierrez said he and other advocates for the vendors have found a new swap meet site in Grantsville that could start operating later this month or in early May
Details of the plans are still being finalized
with more information possibly to come out later this week
But many of the former Redwood Swap Meet vendors are interested
Moviegoers at the Redwood Drive-In Theatre in West Valley City on May 1
The site was recently cleared to make way for a housing development
Deseret News)"Everybody's willing to go and give it a try," he said
Around 200 people attended a meeting on the plans last Friday
the vendors — many of them reliant on the funds they earned for their livelihood — have been doing what they can to make ends meet
Some have tried to sell their wares at random locations only to be told to move along by police
"Everyone's trying to figure out how to make money," Carbajal Gutierrez said
Redevelopment plans at the expanse off the northwest corner of Redwood Road and 3800 South call for some 300 housing units, including 244 townhomes, up to 40 condominiums and 16 single-family homes. Draper-based developer Edgehomes dubs the development Solari on its website
with site development to commence in the coming months
a fruit and vegetable vendor at Redwood Swap Meet in West Valley City
KSL.com)"Edgehomes is scheduled to begin development in June 2025
We anticipate the project will span approximately three years," the company said in a statement to KSL.com
Edgehomes acquired the site from Los Angeles-based Land and Leisure Corp
Many of the former vendors at the Redwood site had roots in Mexico
the rest of Latin America and other countries
They sold everything from clothes and fruits and vegetables to dietary supplements and tools
The proposed Grantsville site west of West Valley City is about a 25-minute drive from the Redwood location
But many of the vendors are willing to give it a try if their former cohorts are on board
the thinking being that if enough locate at the site
Carbajal Gutierrez said he is still scouting for other locations more centrally located in the Salt Lake City urban area

SALT LAKE CITY – A Grantsville man was charged after investigators said he possessed and distributed child sexual abuse imagery
is charged with five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor
On Aug. 16, 2023, court documents said an electronic service provider submitted a cybertip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that the suspect user of an account downloaded child sex abuse material
The tip reportedly included an email address
internet IP address and the suspected photos
The tip was sent to the West Virginia State Police Department
before being transferred to the Colorado Springs Police Department
then the Cache County Sheriff’s Office
Detectives with the CCSO reportedly confirmed the uploaded files were child sexual abuse imagery and served a search warrant on the suspected account
the IP address and the suspected email account
Detectives discovered Harris’ name listed in the account’s billing information
and “determined the defendant was likely the Suspect User,” a probable cause statement said
Court documents state the CCSO then transferred the case to Tooele County
It was discovered Harris was on parole for a 2019 forcible sexual abuse conviction
and the case was transferred again to Adult Probation and Parole
agents with AP&P went to Harris’ residence
where he was reportedly read his Miranda rights
Harris admitted he owned the suspect account
and used the account to download the images
Documents state he told the agents he used the account to share files with others
and had a different account with the service provider because his suspect account was banned
An agent with the AP&P also found “pornographic images of an age-difficult young female on Defendant’s phone in the deleted files,” court documents state
The State requested Harris have a no-bail warrant for his arrest
and said he is a substantial danger to others in the community
specifically to children under 18 years old
Utah — After a bit of a skeleton decoration scandal in Grantsville last year

The city asked businesses to put out their best skeleton decorations this year
residents will get the chance to vote on a winner

People are taking walks with their kids to look at the skeletons."
The city has asked local places to go all out for skeletons for their competition
I was happy because it was a chance for them to show that they all have a great sense of humor and they love that the town wants to do fun things,” said Christina Keener
Critchlow explained how they're taking bad publicity from last Halloween season and turning it into good by getting everyone involved
We have the stripper crew down there at our neighbors
and it’s kind of turned into a whole neighborhood thing,” said Grantsville resident Bryan Duvall
Duvall and his family went with the same theme as their neighbors down the street
“These two men right here are watching the woman
and the woman here is saying hi to that man," said Breyker Duvall
you'll see that there's one over here and the one over there is waving her arm and she has money

Canyon View can now call itself repeat 3A girls state wrestling champions
barely edging out a Grantsville side that finished with 244 points
It was a 2-horse race for the better part of the state tournament
Grantsville led for a big chunk of it but Canyon View stayed hot on their tail
Things remained up in the air for the better part of the final day
and it came down to the 190-pound weight class between 3-time defending champion Tilisa Matakaiongo of Canyon View and Juab’s Macee Ercanbrack
With Grantsville leading just slightly and with no more wrestlers competing
In order for Canyon View to take the title
something she was very well aware of throughout the course of her match
Matakaiongo proved to be clutch for her team once again
getting the pin that her team needed at the 4:46 mark to seal the championship
“It was right before the third round and I heard people saying your sisters need a pin from you
‘I have to get this done,’ said Matakaiongo
I was scoring points in the first two rounds
While things may have been stressful for Canyon View
once it was Matakaiongo’s turn to take the mat
head coach Travis Carter knew his team could pull off something special
becoming a big time leader for our team,” said Carter
Carter also didn’t hesitate to address the adversity his team had to deal with and how it was able to come together in the big moments
“That was just a roller coaster every day,” he said
We had some girls get injured and were taken out of the tournament
We had a girl not make weight which was just devastating
and we had the girls just putting up the energy and it was just amazing.”
Also helping to will their team to victory and winning championships in their individual meets for Canyon View were Brooklyn Barney (125)
Gemma Carter (130) and Adriana Sierra (170)
Evie Davidson of Union made quick work of her opponent Nellie Carter of Canyon View via fall 59 seconds into their match
“I had a pretty good season,” Davidson said
“I only lost two matches all season so my record I think was 44-2 so it was really good
I think one of the only reasons I got here was probably all of my coaches
They just pushed me and made sure that I took advantage of the opportunities that I was presented.”
After having faced Carter twice previously
Davidson was feeling confident in knowing what she needed to win her third championship
“I kind of knew how she was going to wrestle going into it because I had wrestled her twice before
because she was coming after me just as much as I was,” Davidson said
Other winners of their respective weight classes included Juab’s Atti Nelson (100)
Grantsville’s Lindee Ussing (155) and Juan Diego’s Avie Hernandez (235)

Utah (KUTV) — A man ran into a mom and her 1-year-old child with his vehicle in Grantsville
has been charged for driving through an intersection while the woman was crossing with her child in a stroller
Video surveillance from a nearby house showed the woman with her 2-year-old son on a bike and her 1-year-old son in a stroller crossing the intersection of Meadow Lark Circle and West Clark Street Tuesday
MORE:Layton auto-ped hit-and-run victim identified; driver who fled scene still at large
Court documents said the 2-year-old on the bike made it across the intersection with his mother pushing the stroller about 35 feet into the intersection
Craven's vehicle — that he admitted to driving — is seen in the video turning onto Meadow Lark Circle "at a high rate of speed," documents said
The mother of the two boys "screamed and waved her arms," but there was no indication Craven tried to stop or avoid them
The woman and the stroller with the child inside were hit
Documents said the 2-year-old on his bike was missed "by mere inches."
Police found the stroller a measured 43 feet away and Craven's car came to a stop about 51 feet from where the two were hit
Craven got out of his vehicle and approached the mother and child
Documents said the 1-year-old had "a large head contusion and was actively bleeding," being taken to Primary Children's Hospital
Officers claimed Craven's car smelled strongly of marijuana
and he told police he had a medical marijuana card
He told police the last time he had smoked was the night before
Police had Craven participate in a test to observe if he was sober
and documents said he appeared to be under the influence of drugs
Craven later told police he had a bottle of fake urine strapped to his thigh
which he said was for in case there was a random drug screening at his work
Craven was taken to Tooele County Detention Center on two charges of negligently operating a vehicle causing serious bodily injury and possession
sale or use of an adulterant or synthetic urine
Here’s a recap of Tuesday’s 3A girls basketball semifinals at the UCCU Center in Orem
Whenever you get 17 steals in a game you give yourself a really good chance at taking the win
That’s exactly what Canyon View did Tuesday as it beat South Summit 45-37 in the 3A semifinals
Canyon View was a defensive pest all game and made life difficult for the Wildcat offense
its own offense got off to a quick start with 19 first quarter points
South Summit slowed the game down in the second quarter though and kept Canyon View at bay with only two points in the frame
The Wildcats didn’t score particularly well
but their defense was enough to take a 22-21 halftime lead
“South Summit threw some good little kinks at us,” said Canyon View head coach Jaycee Barnhurst of the second quarter struggles
“They denied two of our best shooters and it took us a while to adjust
‘What do I do when I’m denied?’ We just kind of sat there
we freaked out a little bit and we had a bit of a pity party
At halftime we talked about some things to do and I felt like those players adjusted and then it was a different game from there.”
The offensive groove never truly came back for Canyon View
but it more than made up for it with its second half defense
South Summit averaged 51.5 points per game
which was one of the better offenses in 3A
and Canyon View held it to just 15 points in the second half
South Summit star Emma Broadbent still filled up the stat sheet with 17 points and 19 rebounds
but Canyon View kept her shooting percentage to an inefficient 26%
I said that we have a lot of players that can score
but the focus had to be on defense,” Barnhurst said
The score stayed close, but fourth quarter steals and transition buckets from Maya Nichols and Bethanee Vargas were enough to put Canyon View safely over South Summit
Vargas led the Falcons in scoring with 16 points
Canyon View will have a chance to win its first state championship since 2006
but it will have to do so against Region 12 foe Emery in Wednesday’s championship game
The Spartans and Falcons traded games this season
“Hats off to Emery for getting past Grantsville and we’re excited to see Region 12 match up in the championship,” Barnhurst said
We’re going to go prepare and we’re going to be ready to go.”
You wouldn’t have been crazy if you believed the 3A girls state tournament was anything but a formality
Grantsville had an argument as the best team in the state for a large portion of this season
the Cowboys took down everyone in their path
The only blemish on their otherwise perfect record was a loss to Duke signee Emilee Skinner and the Ridgeline Riverhawks
Maxpreps’ 14th-ranked team in the entire country
5 Emery punched its ticket to the championship game with an upset of top-seeded Grantsville 50-47 in the 3A semifinals on Tuesday thanks to some clutch plays down the stretch
The Cowboys and Spartans played each other in early December and it was a completely different story
“They were the only ones that believed in them,” said Emery head coach John Faimalo of his players
“Everybody else wrote (Grantsville) in as the state champion
coaches believed in the girls and the girls believed in each other.”
Emery jumped on Grantsville with hot shooting early and ended the first half having made 57% of its 3-point attempts
The Spartans led by eight at one point but Grantsville never went away, and and a buzzer beater from Avery Allred kept the Cowboys within 26-25 at halftime
The biggest asset Grantsville utilized against Emery was it’s point-of-attack defense, as Allred and Kodee Williams kept things tough on the Emery guards
Turnovers were a problem all game for Emery as it ended the semifinal with 29 giveaways
but each time the Spartans ran back on defense and often picked off a turnover of their own
‘Stats are stats.’ At the end of the day we could have 100 turnovers but as long as the scoreboard shows a win
that’s the only stat I care about,” Faimalo said
Emery led almost the whole way through the second half
though it never became more than a three-possession game
Every time Emery threatened to break the contest open
Grantsville responded with a run of its own
One such sequence came midway through the fourth quarter when Emery held a 42-37 lead, as Grantsville had a quick succession of a 3 from Williams and a transition bucket from Emmy Butler to tie it 42-42
Then with the game tied 47-47 with under 30 seconds left, the Spartan defense forced a turnover and Kali Jensen went to the free throw line
The Spartans then forced another turnover and KaBree Gordon sunk both three throws to secure the 50-47 win
Katelyn Nielson was also a big offensive piece for Emery in the win with 14 points
“I’m just so proud of my girls and the way they laid it all out,” Faimalo said
so we’re lucky to get away with the win and it’s just great for our girls
My girls played hard and that’s about all I can say.”

GRANTSVILLE – A community in Grantsville was put on alert Sunday when a live World War II-era artillery shell was discovered on a family’s property
“There was a citizen out there that recently passed away
As the family was cleaning up the property
a 155 mm artillery shell,” Benjamin Porter
a spokesperson with the Unified Fire Authority
A community in Grantsville was put on alert when a live World War II-era artillery shell was discovered on a family’s property on Dec
that it was just kind of laying in the dirt
It was just set aside and looked like it had potentially been forgotten about,” Porter said
Grantsville police were first on scene to observe the device
As neighbors were asked to shelter in place
UFA’s Bomb Squad Special Operations Division then responded and used a robot to x-ray the device and determined it was still live
Air Force was then called in to collect the shell and dispose of it
“They did find that it was a relatively low risk
so they let the surrounding homes know,” Porter said
The agencies involved in removing the artillery shell are now trying to determine how it got to the property and how long it was there
They said they didn’t believe there was any criminal activity involved
Porter said he’s grateful for how the family responded to finding the device and reminded others to call 911 if they ever come across something similar
“If you’re to find any kind of unexploded ordnance
whether it’s blasting caps or dynamite or any kind of wartime artillery shells
we can check it out and we can handle it if we need to.”
The final results of the 3A girls state tennis tournament were a mystery for all of the players and fans who endured the warm
sunny weather that lasted almost into the early evening Saturday at Liberty Park
Afton and Mya Orgill’s individual titles in No
3 singles were the difference as Grantsville narrowly won the team title
The day’s matches included two that lasted more than three hours in 80-degree heat
and Cowboys coach Stephen Thurgood said the finish became one of his best memories of his 12 years coaching at Grantsville
was so happy he welcomed picking up the tab for his team’s dinner at a Salt Lake restaurant before the Cowboys returned to their small community about 30 miles west of Utah’s capital
“I’ve already retired twice,” said Thurgood
“but I’m on a one-year contract so I’ll be back next spring with the boys team
Because the team scoring was so close and not updated on the UHSAA website in real time
nobody could monitor the outcome accurately
When UHSAA officials revealed the outcome of the team titles
it felt more like a Hollywood awards extravaganza wherein the decision is delayed by the opening of an envelope
finished with 56 points to edge Rowland Hall (52)
Rowland Hall and Morgan finished tied for their region title late last month and each coach knew state would be close and likely depend on the smallest of breaks
After Afton Orgill won her individual crown earlier in the day she cheered on her teammates
whose match was the finale and gave Grantsville the five necessary points to leapfrog defending champion Rowland Hall
Rowland Hall had gained a one-point advantage only minutes earlier when Ainsley Moore and Fiona Kean won their second straight three-set match and then fell to the court with fatigue
“All of our region fought all season,” said Thurgood
“All the players know each other well and any of the matches really could have gone either way
Morgan’s Macey Dee kept her squad in the race with a first-place finish in No
Rowland Hall’s strength was in doubles play
where Jane Borst and Savanna O’Connell emerged on top

so they let the surrounding homes know," Porter said
They said they didn't believe there was any criminal activity involved
Porter said he's grateful for how the family responded to finding the device and reminded others to call 911 if they ever come across something similar
"If you're to find any kind of unexploded ordnance
whether it's blasting caps or dynamite or any kind of wartime artillery shells
It’s not often you get to skip your political science class to flip on ESPN2 and watch your name get announced as a participant in the 2025 McDonald’s All-American game
But that’s exactly the type of Monday Emilee Skinner got to experience this week
Basketball recipient had a pretty good feeling her name would get called during the lunchtime
but seeing it actually unfold that way was a pretty special moment nonetheless
once it finally announced my name I felt really good about it
I’m super excited to play with the girls because I’ve played with them at camps and on team USA so it will be fun to play with the girls and hang out with them,” said Skinner
who will play in the game in Brooklyn on April 1
Skinner becomes just the third McDonald’s All-American from Utah
joining Fremont’s Timea Gardiner (2022) and Lehi’s Michelle Harrison (2006)
a few hours after the nationally broadcast announcement
Skinner got the opportunity to showcase why she’s a McDonald’s All-American on her home floor
With undefeated Ridgeline hosting undefeated Grantsville on Monday in a marquee showdown of two of the best teams in the state
the Riverhawks were cutthroat from the jump in a dominant 67-34 victory
Skinner filled the stat sheet with 18 points
five steals and three blocks for Ridgeline
Both teams had similar quality wins this season against teams like Copper Hills
and Ridgeline coach Ainsli Jenks new it would take a great effort to beat Grantsville
She attributes the win to preparation and the way her girls attacked Grantsville’s 1-2-2 aggressive half-court zone defense
really hard in film and in practice looking at that 1-2-2 defense that is just stifling
Grantsville has done a phenomenal job holding teams to low points
Megan has them playing good tough defense,” said Jenks
Grantsville hadn’t faced a team the caliber of Ridgeline though
With Skinner getting extra defensive attention along the perimeter
Ridgeline passed quickly out of the pressure and Grantsville’s defensive rotations in the paint were too slow
Abby Mumford scored on four straight layups in the first quarter as Ridgeline’s lead swelled quickly to a dozen points
“We’ve been working really hard at finding those holes
and I think the girls did a phenomenal job,” said Jenks
“I don’t know how many layups we had that first quarter
and Abby Mumford going to work and Em (Skinner) and (Makaydi Jenks) finding her down there and I just thought it was great team basketball.”
Mumford finished with a game-high 19 points
Ridgeline led 16-6 by the end of the first quarter and then 37-13 at the half
The Riverhawks’ biggest lead was 65-28 late in the game before Grantsville’s Renn White drained back-to-back 3-pointers in the final two minutes
Grantsville coach Megan Vera certainly believed Monday’s game was winnable
but said the mentality just wasn’t what it needed to be
“I felt like in warm-ups there was a lot of confidence
and in the locker room a lot of confidence
you’ve got to have a killer mentality,” said Vera
and we weren’t making our defensive rotations
This was the third straight season Ridgeline and Grantsville have played a nonregion game despite being in different classifications
The previous two years the games were played before region play
but Vera really wanted this year’s rematch in late January to prepare her team for the state tournament
Grantsville has been the favorite in the 3A tourney each of the past two seasons in its quest for the first girls basketball state title in school history
but each year it underachieved in the playoffs
“We knew in the middle of region last year that we needed to throw in some games this year in region play just to challenge us
and maybe humble us and prepare us for the end of February a little bit better than what we got prepared last year,” said Vera
27 helps Grantsville lift that elusive 3A title trophy on Feb
then the thrashing will all have been worth it
Vera admits success depends on how her girls respond to the humbling loss
“I would’ve liked to put up a more competitive game
but mentally we did not show up ready to compete tonight,” said Vera
That’s going to be telling for us tomorrow.”
Avery Allred led Grantsville in the loss with nine points
Morgan has made plenty of statements on the way to a dominant start this season
none more emphatic than a 42-3 rout of rival and 6-1 Grantsville Friday night
Versatile offensive weapon Lincoln Gilson scored three touchdowns and Jake Hansen housed an 80-yard pick six to firmly entrench the Trojans at the top of 3A North with an 8-0 overall record
“That’s one thing about playing Grantsville
you know they’re always going to play hard
so you’ve always got to play hard,” Morgan coach Jared Barlow said
Morgan gifted Grantsville its only points of the game on a questionable fake punt call deep in their own territory
leading to a 35-yard Brent Knickerbocker field goal with 10:39 in the first quarter
Morgan took the lead in just six plays on a Beck Sheffield 10-yard bullet to the back corner of the end zone to Boston Zack
Morgan’s defense then grabbed an interception from Grantsville’s backup quarterback on the ensuing third down
a tough break after starter Dallan Van Vliet was forced off the field for one play after his helmet was knocked off
The Trojans went back to work and leaned on Gilson’s versatility in both the pass and run game
The senior stormed through the gut of Grantsville’s defense to make it 14-3 with 6:04 left in the first quarter on a 12-yard scoring carry
“He’s kind of like a safety blanket,” Barlow said
“When you have somebody like that on offense
but it opens things up for other guys as well.”
Grantsville’s defense did its part in the first half
forcing two Sheffield interceptions and recovering two Morgan fumbles
but the Cowboys offense failed to capitalize while trying to stave off Morgan’s aggressive blitz and pass rush timing
Van Vliet tossed an overthrown pick to Hansen while under pressure to set up a 12-play offensive march punctuated by Gilson’s second first-half rushing touchdown to make it 21-3
“One thing we stressed this year is just getting the ball into playmakers’ hands,” Gilson said
The teams exchanged turnovers on a Morgan fumble and Van Vliet interception before the Trojans went back to the night’s strategy of stretching the Cowboys laterally from sideline to sideline until they broke again
Gilson’s gliding for his third score on a jet sweep for the 28-3 lead at halftime
“Whatever we can do to motion and get the defense in something that we want
Morgan made Grantsville pay on another Van Vliet overthrow in the third quarter
Hansen snatched his second pick and weaved his way across the field for the 80-yard interception return home run to put the game firmly out of reach
After the first pick six of his high school football career
Hansen said the Morgan secondary is a “no fly zone” and that each level of the defense complements the other from pressure to tackling to turnovers
I couldn’t have done it without them,” Hansen said
Morgan added a final touchdown with a 1-yard Krew Galbraith scoring dive for the 42-3 margin with 4:42 left in the game
Barlow complimented the focus of his team to dial in week after week
a clear strength of this Trojans team that’s outscored opponents 270-10 in the last five games
it’s about how good can we be,” Barlow said
“Focus on us and everything else should take care of itself.”
Utah (KUTV) — Unified Fire’s Bomb Squad responded to a situation involving a live artillery shell on Sunday at a Grantsville home
Authorities said members of the Special Operations Division were dispatched to the home on Peach Road after reports of ordinance found on the property on Dec
The bomb squad arrived and located an old artillery shell that had remained live for many years
Officials with UFA said the person living in the home had recently died
and family discovered the shell that dates back to World War II
A shelter in place was issued while crews checked out the shell
The bomb is at least two feet long and about 100lbs
The team secured the shell and safely transferred it to the U.S
It was Senior Night and homecoming at Juan Diego Catholic High School Thursday night
It was also the highlight of Zac Szymakowski’s athletic career so far in the United States
But the Grantsville Cowboys left the field with the loudest shouts after a 21-7 win over the Soaring Eagle in a 3A North regular-season finale
the Cowboys clinched second place in the standings and
Jayden Atkinson rushed for three touchdowns and the Cowboys’ defense held Juan Diego in check until midway through the fourth quarter
Millward was especially proud of his team’s line play and the way it kept its composure after a 45-minute lightning delay early in the first quarter
“Our line guys aren’t very big but we didn’t get pushed around,” Millward said
“and I liked the way we came out after halftime and started moving the ball with our passing game
“Juan Diego is always tough but we’re peaking at the right time.”
Grantsville took advantage of a fumble on Juan Diego’s first possession and a series of Atkinson runs got the Cowboys on the scoreboard first
A storm front blew through the Salt Lake Valley shortly afterward and sent both teams to the locker room for 45 minutes
the Cowboys quickly regained the momentum and Juan Diego’s inability to establish its usually potent running game also led to Szymakowski’s varsity-playing career
a transfer from Australia who has experience playing Australian football
joined his new friends on the Soaring Eagle football team but was ruled ineligible due to the UHSAA’s recently adjusted rules involving foreign players
District Court granted a temporary restraining order
“I had been playing in some JV games but there’s nothing like suiting up with my mates on the varsity,” said Szymakowski
who punted five times and placed three of them inside Grantsville’s 20-yard line
and I wish all the kids who wanted to play didn’t have to deal with what he had to go through,” said Juan Diego coach Danny Larson
Szymakowski was not a factor in the eventual outcome but hopes for more action in the postseason and is also considering playing lacrosse in a few months
Juan Diego didn’t record a first down until midway through the final period
the Soaring Eagle faced another fourth down but quarterback Hayden Mezenen faked a handoff
took advantage of a good block and sprinted 58 yard untouched for a touchdown
“That’s the type of game we play,” said Larson
but we got one there and if we could have gotten loose for one or two more
Juan Diego stopped the Cowboys on their next possession but Dallan Van Vliet’s 64-yard punt was a momentum-buster and Grantsville put the game away when Atkinson scored his 14th touchdown this year with a 5-yard run
will advance to the 3A playoffs and are expected to earn a first-round bye and a second-round home game
