GLEN MILLS — Grayson Golek was mugged by teammates and friends as he walked off the court Tuesday night
More than a few told the sweaty 6-foot-5 Garnet Valley sophomore directly
The first thing he admits is that he sometimes gets in his own way
He knows what he is capable of doing on a basketball court
Grayson Golek exploded for a career-best 30 against Bensalem (Photo by Mark Jordan/CoBL)
when he dropped a career-high 30 points on Bensalem in Garnet Valley’s 72-54 second-round PIAA District 1 Class 6A playoff game
4-seeded Jaguars (18-6) will advance to quarterfinal round to play No
5 seed Plymouth-Whitemarsh on Friday at 7 p.m.
while Bensalem (15-10) will take on Neshaminy in the playback round
Golek was simply unstoppable against the smaller Owls
He blocked three shots and grabbed eight rebounds
in a game he will not forget any time soon
is that could and should play like that more often
“That’s my fault,” he said
“I have been steadily building my confidence
but I’m on a team with such great seniors that I want to respect them
There was one instance in the waning seconds of the third quarter when Jags’ star senior Jake Sniras handed the ball off to Golek in the corner and told him to shoot
who was making it seemed every shot he took
and there were a few more seconds left and we were up by 12,” Golek said
But this game gives me a big boost of confidence
A game like this tells me I can do it again
I think the only one who may be in my way could be me
I need to tell myself ‘I have to do this more.’”
He certainly has a long list of proponents
Jags’ coach Mike Brown feels Golek is one of the best kept secrets around
who has the defensive versatility to defend a guard out on the perimeter
Golek was used more as a help defender sitting inside the lane
I mean a great kid who is the type who will do whatever I want him to do,” Brown said
“If I tell Grayson he’s not starting tonight
He’s a solid kid and he does a lot of our dirty work
“The nice thing about him tonight is that he had 30
he won’t care as long as we win.”
Brown said Golek’s deference to the seniors comes from respect
He’s an Eagle Scout (he actually is)
“I think Grayson is a better player than he thinks he is,” Brown said
Grayson Golek is an Eagle Scout who once broke his right hand two years ago
needing four months of rehab (Photo by Mark Jordan/CoBL)
Golek and Brady Krautzel led the way for the Jags
combining to score 52 of Garnet Valley’s 72 points
“Garnet Valley is a very good basketball team that is big
tough and can beat you in a lot of different ways,” Bensalem coach Ron Morris said
Their young kid (Golek) gave us a lot of problems
and he was even stretching the floor hitting threes
“We’re still in the playbacks and we have at least one more game
He’s put in the extra work and that showed tonight.”
Golek will try to bottle what he achieved Tuesday night
He broke his right hand during an AAU game during the summer of 2022
He broke the middle finger of his right hand
and it took him four months of rehab to retrain the tendons in his right hand
What’s interesting is that on the play he broke his hand
He went to the free throw line—with a broken right hand
“Beining out makes you appreciate things more,” Golek said about that time

Falling tree limbs in Birmingham kills one person, another injured
Jefferson County, Ala. — The first thing you see when you ride on Lyle Drive in Jefferson County’s Grayson Valley neighborhood is a house that caught fire several years ago — just sitting and decaying.
There’s overgrown brush. People are using the property as a dumping ground for trash.
Another house on nearby Dry Creek Circle is also abandoned. It caught fire. It’s boarded up and it’s an eyesore.
Adam McAlister has lived in the neighborhood for 13 years.
“It’s frustrating. It’s angry. It’s repulsive to see. It’s disgusting and dirty, McAlister said.”
Gale Harris has lived in the neighborhood for several years. She called our I-Team hotline.
“I shouldn’t have to look for another neighborhood to move in because of this. Because I enjoy living in this neighborhood,” Harris said.
Bill Laseter has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years.
“It looks bad in the neighborhood and you’re trying to make it look good. Everything you’re trying to do to make it look good just goes down the drain,” Laseter said.
We contacted Jefferson County about the abandoned house on Lyle Drive. It’s supposed to be demolished. But there’s no timeline because the county is addressing asbestos removal in all 100 houses on its demolition list.
The abandoned house on Dry Creek Circle is owned by the federal government’s Housing and Urban Development. A property maintenance person is supposed to take care of the problem.
I asked a Jefferson County spokesperson about cleaning up the trash. State law prohibits the county from going on private property.
But we’ll stay on top of this and try to make some improvements.
but by far one of the biggest talking points centered around Grayson Allen
In his first opportunity to speak to the media at large since the arrival of point guard Tyus Jones this summer
Allen was quick to say he had no problem now coming off the bench
There were many takeaways from the Phoenix Suns' 2024-25 media day
This kind of selfless attitude exactly what the franchise are going to need if they want to achieve their goals this coming season
Despite having a career year last season - with highs in points
rebounds and assists - Allen is going to drop to the bench and likely be the sixth man
while the Suns trot out a trio of guys in Jones
That would be the outrageous bulk that Allen put on
telling reporters that he's now up to 230 pounds
Miles above the 195 he was listed at last season
You don't even need to go back to his opening interview to see the change in his body
seriously just look at the image that accompanies this article instead
If we assume that the bigger frame Allen now boasts isn't going to slow him down in any meaningful way or change how he shoots the ball - and it shouldn't - then head coach Mike Budenholzer might have a tough decision to make before long
Which is that Allen might quickly become too good - and frankly versatile - to not have with the starters
but even the most optimistic fan has to admit that Jones
Booker and Beal are not a great trio of guys to have together on the defensive end
Kevin Durant and Jusuf Nurkic can mask a lot - but out on the perimeter especially - the Suns are going to get cooked by elite scorers
.@GraysonJAllen: Full time bucket getter, part time philosopher 💬 pic.twitter.com/4G5B3OVYv6
Allen was already at best an above average defender
and last season outperformed expectations in that role
the team held firm in their defensive rating as they finished 12th in the league (113.7)
and allowed 113.9 points when Allen was out there
Considering he split his time playing with some of the bench unit
So it may be that if Jones is getting picked on because of his height or Beal doesn't have it - Booker is going to turn in probably the best defensive campaign of his career to date - Allen is quickly going to become an appealing option
At this rate he looks like he could even body up the likes of Jayson Tatum and Jalyen Brown
As an interesting subplot - assuming Allen can put up close to the league-leading 46.1 percent from deep he managed last season - imagine having him playing at the four in smaller lineups
He now has the physicality to bang with these bigger players
while on the other end of the court he'll drag forwards away from the paint
a place where a lot of them are more comfortable defending
This could even lead to a group consisting of Jones
which is extremely exciting offensively and if nothing else is quicker and can switch a bit more easily on the other end of the court
The Suns don't have another traditional center like Nurkic - and he's really important to a lot of what they do - he was just exposed in the playoffs last season
All of this because Allen added a ton of muscle during the summer, and it could present coach Budenholzer with the first genuine headache of his tenure
No matter where Allen plays he's going to succeed with this group - and the real beauty is he'll willingly slot in anywhere - but in some ways he'll feel like a new player if he can combine his shooting with a more physical style of play

The car left the scene and was located a short distance away by deputies
Evidence at collected at the scene indicated that Gray had indeed fired shots at the car

deputies entered the home to investigate while other lawmen surrounded the property outside
Simmons was seen running out of the front door before retreating back inside after seeing the responding deputies
jumping off the deck but deputies were there to greet him and they quickly took him into custody
authorities discovered that the Simmons had allegedly been cutting and removing copper pipes from the residence
causing extensive damage to the home in the process
Deputies also recovered a shotgun and crow bar from the suspect's vehicle

The extended family of Lauren Grayson visited the Grayson Power Plant (GPP) on Tuesday
June 20 for a final tour of the facilities
Grayson was chief engineer and general manager of the plant that was his namesake
The family present on Tuesday included his son David Grayson and daughter Cynthia Pearson
grandson David Pearson and granddaughter Elisabeth Zahm and great-grandson and great-granddaughter Caden and Lauren Zahm
general manager of Glendale Water and Power (GWP)
began the tour by saying a little about their personal histories
Both had started their careers as apprentices in 1989
working their way up over the decades to their current titles
Young’s emotional connection to the GPP was obvious as he held back tears
“I don’t like to have my history erased,” he said of his feelings regarding the plant’s closure
He explained how a couple of weeks ago a lunch was held for previously employed operators and mechanics
He said that many emotions surfaced when he thought about showing the family the GPP one last time
Glendale has been receiving its power and water from the Grayson Power Plant since the 1940s
“Much of [the GPP’s] existing infrastructure and equipment is due for replacement.”
It was proposed that the Grayson Repowering Project “would replace aged
inefficient and high maintenance equipment at the Grayson Power Plant with a combination of energy storage and new
faster-starting and more environmentally responsible generation technologies.”
“GWP is faced with the imminent retirement of its only local generation resource
the natural gas fired Grayson Power Plant at 800 Air Way in Glendale. GWP is extremely dependent on imported power over constrained electric transmission and must replace the retiring Grayson units with reliable local generation
The retirement of the Grayson Power Plant presents GWP with a unique opportunity to shift to cleaner
more efficient technology to power the City in the future.”
Explaining the transition to a repowering project
“Glendale is heavily dependent upon imported power to serve its customers
and the transmission import capacity is less than the peak summer
so GWP needs to have a local source of power to back up the transmission imports and ensure reliable service
… The Grayson Power Plant is well past its useful life and needs to be repowered in order to meet the current and future energy needs of the City of Glendale
A repowering project would replace the aged
inefficient and high maintenance equipment at the Grayson Power Plant with new
faster-starting and more environmentally-responsible generation technologies.”

Several years ago, Grayson Ty and Laura Buchanan first met as separate working musicians
was co-billed at the Iron Horse Musical Hall in Northampton with Eavesdrop
then an acoustic folk-pop trio that Buchanan was part of
Fast forward to 2023, and the two musicians are now partners both in life and music, and they’ve released their first album together, “Long Way ‘Round” – with the name of the duo
being an amalgam of their first names: “Sonaura.”
is very much a product of their relationship
The two singers were both coming off relationships with other people
“Long Way ‘Round” is the debut release of Valley singer-songwriters Jason Ty and Laura Buchanan
who call their musical partnership Sonaura
with the pandemic arriving a few months later
they found themselves hunkered down together – “We were kind of in each other’s bubbles,” Ty said – and they began working on some music together as well
That period of intense emotion and creativity led to the 12 songs on “Long Way ‘Round,” a mix of folk
the songs all built around their harmonies
with additional musicians adding keyboards
the songs are very much a matter of the heart
with songs that move from heartbreak to reconciliation to the passion
vulnerability and hope that new love can usher in
“We’re both kind of romantics at heart,” Ty said with a laugh
“But the last few years have been a pretty intense time for us
and we’re both songwriters – that’s the most important part of music for us – so all of that really shaped the songs.”
Their songs are a study in close collaboration
The singers alternate taking the lead on verses on most of the tunes
though they sometimes trade off the lead on the same songs
The variety of sounds on “Long Way ‘Round” also reflect their separate musical footprints. Buchanan, for instance, is still part of Eavesdrop
but that band has evolved over the years to become a seven-piece group that bills itself as “Americana Folk-Pop.”
“Laura has a deep background in country and roots music
and I come from more of a pop/R&B/soul background,” said Ty
“But we’ve been able to merge all of that and find a lot of common ground
Sonaura is the name of the Valley singer-songwriter duo of Grayson Ty and Laura Buchanan
“Long Way ‘Round.” Image courtesy Jason Ty
each brings different skills and viewpoints to the table
while Buchanan “has a way of saying things in the most concise way.”
“We learned a lot from each other,” he said
and Laura’s really good at coming up with conversational lyrics.”
a slow blues/soul number built around minor chords and arpeggios on electric guitar
with Buchanan singing lead: “Don’t come crying to me now / Violated those vows / Keep on telling me how / You’re so sorry now.”
“Ever After” takes the opposite tack: It’s a celebration of new love
with Buchanan again singing lead and the singers combining for pretty harmonies on the chorus: “Far as we know / You and I have found what / We’ve been searching for.”
The album’s title is drawn from a line in that song –“Let’s take the long way ‘round” – and musically the tune shows Buchanan’s footprint
with a folk-country sound built around strummed acoustic guitars
Ty takes the lead on “80 Miles,” a colorful synth-pop number that references Sedona
a red rock town where the couple posed for their album cover last fall when they visited the area
with the singer eager to end a long drive and get home to his love
“Trick of the Light,” another pop-flavored tune with synthesizer and fairly heavy drums
has Ty singing lead on a tale about love and infatuation
wondering whether his love interest feels the same: “You got my attention / Somehow I’m / Colorblind and / Lost inside / Another dimension.”
Ty says he and Buchanan worked on the basic cuts of the album
including drum tracks and some programming
then sent the music to his friend Jeff Lynch
a guitarist he’s often gigged with; Lynch is also an engineer with Mainline Recording Studio in Westfield
Lynch added acoustic and electric guitars to the mix and finalized the drums
and the album also has contributions from Zack Cross on keyboards and Reed Sutherland on bass
Sutherland and Matt Thorton added strings to the album’s last cut
Ty says the album was mastered in Nashville by Pete Lyman
a Grammy-nominated engineer who’s worked with dozens of artists
“We’re really fortunate to have had such a reputable team behind us who saw and delivered our vision for this project,” Ty said in a followup email
Ty said he and Buchanan don’t have immediate plans to perform the songs live – though they’re getting pressure to do that from friends and family
“We both wanted to make the most polished record we could
even if it took a dozen takes on the vocals,” he said
“We’re just happy to have the album out now
but we’ll be working on ways we can take the songs to the stage.”
