Goddard College appears to have a buyer — a local group called the Greatwood Project will purchase the campus for $3.4 million
the Plainfield institution announced that it would be closing and selling its campus due to low enrollment
Alumni urged the board to sell to a buyer that would preserve the spirit of the campus
Earlier this summer, the board had reached a sales agreement with another entity. But that agreement appeared to fall through
the Goddard Board of Trustees released a statement announcing its new sales agreement
“The Goddard Board is hopeful that this sale will allow us to meet our fiduciary responsibility to pay our faculty and staff
and ensure a smooth transition for our students,” the board wrote
“We are also thrilled that this sale will allow the campus to remain in the hands of the Goddard community and ensure that the Goddard legacy lives on in Plainfield.”
which was founded and funded by alumni and former faculty
says it plans to lease space out to local businesses and organizations in a village-like model
The group also says that it has hopes of adding affordable housing on campus
Named after one of the original sections of the campus
the Greatwood Project formed in the early summer when the sale of the college meant the campus was at risk of being developed
spokesperson for the Greatwood Project and Goddard alum
says that the group didn’t submit a formal bid in the first stages of the sale
at the adjacent groups that were interested in buying the campus,” Gruen said
“[We were] seeing a lot of similar mission-aligned interests were matching there
seeing groups like Cooperation Vermont that also wanted to preserve the campus and its legacy
“We weren’t in any way interested in competing with those folks
It was just when we saw that those other sales weren’t manifesting that we continued to put ourselves forward in a more real and genuine capacity and ended up in the position that we are in now,” Gruen said
Cooperation Vermont was tepid in its response
“This is the latest in a series of announcements from Goddard that they have accepted another bid
so we will see,” wrote Michelle Eddleman McCormick
director of Cooperation Vermont and the Cooperation Vermont Community Land Trust
But the Greatwood Project says that “both parties are moving as quickly as possible
excited by the inherent potential in moving Goddard forward into its next iteration.”
was hailed as a beacon of alternative education
Its radical uniqueness distinguished the institution from others of its size
along with its host of notable alumni and faculty which include playwright David Mamet
More from Vermont Edition: 'Higher ed has lost something that's critical': Reflecting on Goddard College's closure
Home to a student population of only a few hundred
with no grades and a reputation for non-traditional majors
it was a place where students and professors created curriculums from scratch each semester
rerouting traditional learning maps to get at what they wanted to learn
“The entire campus as it sits right now is a memorial to transformative learning and action
an institution that was interested in preserving democracy in its pedagogical model,” Gruen said
“So it’s also that; it’s a testament to those good efforts and that amazing history.”
Gruen says the Greatwood Project hopes to preserve Goddard’s grounds so the local community can access them
Goddard’s campus hasn’t housed its full student body since the early 2000s when the college shifted to being mostly online
The campus currently leases out some of its empty spaces to local ventures
like the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism
The Greatwood Project says it plans to expand upon this model

With Saint Segal and favourite Billytherealbigred setting a stiff early gallop
Booster Bob appeared to be taken off his feet in the early stages
and was soon well detached from the main group
As the field began to thin out there seemed to be no way back for Booster Bob
who still was not making up ground with a mile to run as Saint Segal kept up the relenting pace
That proved too much for Paul Nicholls’ Coral Gold Cup winner Kandoo Kid
but Vincenzo suddenly appeared on the scene
looking to give Sam Thomas another big Saturday win after Katate Dori last week
Booster Bob began to run on through beaten horses and even before jumping the last
the result began to look inevitable as Olly Murphy’s seven-year-old was gaining ground with every stride
The 16-1 chance eventually crossed the line a length and a quarter clear of Vincenzo
currently leading the race to be champion jockey
told Sky Sports Racing: “I don’t know how that happened
“I actually fancied him coming into today because he’s a weird horse
We’ve probably been wrong running him over two miles when most of the time it looks like he wants three
he actually wants softer ground and was changing his legs on the way round but as he warmed up
“When we passed one he sort of got into it then and when he passed a few more
From the back of the ditch I felt I could win
“It’s great for Graham (Whateley) as he’s a big supported of Olly’s
We’ve had lots of winners for him but it’s nice to land a big one.”
Murphy said: “I was thinking I was getting sacked and I was thinking Sean Bowen was too halfway round
He just couldn’t go early and halfway I wanted him to pull up and save him for next week
It was a disaster really but it’s worked out
I’m very lucky to have him as my stable jockey
These are the races you want to be winning
“Graham told me this morning he hadn’t had a bet for £20 years but that he had £5 each-way this morning.”

has seen about £558,000 invested into it to upgrade what it can offer residents
It includes an extension of the community with the extra bedrooms in addition to the existing 22 and further communal spaces for residents to socialise in
electrical works and a new kitchen servery being installed
It was based on feedback and ideas from residents and relatives
and a ‘jobs around the house’ station has also been added to a breakout zone in Greatwood House’s corridor to help residents living with dementia reminisce of past days and give them an activity to enjoy
should be complete in June with the Shrewsbury unit’s work finished at the end of March
And people can see the effect it has had when Greatwood House opens its doors on an open day on Friday

Fergal O'Brien says he regrets getting "sucked into the hype" around his Greatwood Hurdle favourite Dysart Enos and is looking forward to a potential rematch with Burdett Road and Be Aware
Dysart Enos was labelled "the best-handicapped horse in Britain and Ireland" by the Racing Post's Upping The Ante presenter David Jennings
and O'Brien admitted he was buoyed by the confidence surrounding the mare
who was a strong ante-post fancy for the lucrative handicap before being sent off 85-40 favourite
"I was probably a bit disappointed because I got sucked into the hype
which I don't normally do," said O'Brien
"Everyone was telling me how well handicapped she was
but Burdett Road was probably even better handicapped
"I definitely wouldn't be afraid to take on Burdett Road and Be Aware again
I was a bit deflated straight after the run because she was in great form but
If we ran in Graded races he'd be giving us 7lb
but he gave us 2lb and beat us only three and a half lengths
O'Brien was pleased with numerous aspects of Dysart Enos's performance and is already targeting another valuable 2m handicap hurdle at Ascot on December 21
before a mares' conditions race at the same track on January 18
"There were so many positives," he said
because she didn't jump great at slower paces last season
"Johnny was aware Harry Cobden was having a bit of a freebie in front
and we'd have liked something else to have gone after him so we could have played our cards a bit later
That's probably cost us second."
O'Brien also saddled the fourth home Tintintin
He was third in the Swinton and he just turns up and does his job
I'm sure he's crying out for a bit further
Jack [Hogan] felt he was flat out the whole way
but he came up the hill really well."
Dysart Enos is priced at 12-1 and 100-1 respectively for the Mares' Hurdle and Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival

Many trainers will target races to use as prep races before coming to the Greatwood Gold Cup
these are the races which the recent winners ran in before coming here:
Steve Greatwood has settled in Bend for retirement
“I spent so much time coming over here when I had free time
all I want to do is here,” said the longtime college football coach who wrapped up a 40-year career by spending the past three seasons at California
Greatwood was trimming some trees as a fire precaution on his property located on the east side of town
Those are among the duties filling his calendar that is clear for the first time in four decades
became grandparents for the first time in December
“I haven’t had a fall to myself since high school so I want to experience some things,” Greatwood said
“There is a lot of good fishing to be done in the fall
It is going to be weird being in the stands
“I don’t know how I will handle that so we will wait and see
… Right now we are hanging around here but I’m sure we will take some trips
I don’t have any desire to get on a plane because I’ve been on too darn many.”
The 61-year old graduated from Churchill High School and Oregon before beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Ducks in 1980
He spent 32 seasons coaching at Oregon split between two stints
“I turned out to be very fortunate because this is a transient profession,” Greatwood said
“For me to spend the bulk of my career at Oregon and really watch that program grow and mature from an also-ran to one of the premier programs in the country gives me a great deal of satisfaction.”
Greatwood coached the offensive line at Oregon from 1982 until 1995 when he left with Rich Brooks to coach the St
He spent two years at USC and one at Maryland
but returned to the Ducks in 2000 as the defensive line coach before switching back to the offensive line five years later
Greatwood’s time at Oregon ended when Mark Helfrich was fired following the 2016 season
former Duck Justin Wilcox was hired as the head coach at Cal and brought Greatwood on to coach the offensive line
The Bears increased their win total during each of the past two seasons before finishing last year at 8-5 with a second straight bowl trip
Greatwood walked off with a 35-20 win over Illinois in the Redbox Bowl
“I feel like Cal is in a better place now than when we took over and my position group specifically,” he said
“I think Cal is poised to have a breakout season
I thought this was the right time to go because I left the cupboard full with all five starters back and two that were injured last year
so potentially seven starters on the offensive line.”
Greatwood said the changing nature of recruiting in college football was one reason he decided to get out of the game
“I know I am going to miss the interaction with the players and camaraderie with the guys I coached with
It was getting more and more difficult for me
the recruiting part of it year-round and having to make decisions on kids during their sophomore year in high school
“The whole acceleration of it put me off so this was the right time for me
I couldn’t do the job that Justin needed me to do in recruiting to grow the program
It got to the point where I felt like I wasn’t willing to do what was asked of me from the recruiting standpoint any longer to work at that high level.”
Greatwood was part of six Pac-12 championships at Oregon with two trips to that national title game
“I was very fortunate in my career,” he said
“I got to play for a couple national championships
I felt like I accomplished all I could short of winning a national title.”
Bend has become home to a few former professional and college football players who are coaching high schools in the area
Greatwood has already had a couple of inquiries about his availability to return to the sideline with one of those programs on Friday nights
but this is my first fall and summer coming up,” he said
“I know myself well enough that if I do volunteer
I just don’t want to make that commitment right now.”

“It was a great performance from such a young horse in a strong race, I am really looking forward to the rest of the season with him. It’s been an amazing few days.”
The Greatwood has been hit and miss in terms of strength in depth in recent years, but this year’s renewal looked a strong one with several young improving horses with bundles of untapped potential in the line-up.
Burdett Road, whose sole defeat over hurdles to this point had been at the hands of the top-class Sir Gino, was one of them, and Cobden set his stall out right from the off when sending the horse into the lead.
Unbeaten mare Dysart Enos was nipping at his heels most of the way but started to run out of steam after the last, so the final challenge came from Be Aware who was smuggled craftily into the race by Harry Skelton.
he said if there is no pace in the race today let’s rock and roll
jumped great and gave himself a chance today
“He found plenty when he needed to when he was challenged on the run-in
He has improved a hell of a lot and is only going one way
“He’ll need to improve plenty again to enter the Champion Hurdle picture but he is still young and there is more to come.”

A single epic run from the High Wall of Lothric to the final bonfire
Dark Souls isn't a series that gives its secrets up easily
and that extends to its myriad NPC side quests
It's entirely possible - and surprisingly easy - to get through the game without meeting a single non-story-critical NPC
with many characters only making their presence felt once you've liberated them from some distant
NPCs tend to come in two forms: those that become merchants at Firelink Shrine once encountered
and those that begin journeying across Lothric
feature their own (often obtuse) quest lines that
to special lore moments and even secret endings
completing an NPCs side quest can be a real challenge
It's incredibly easy to miss the trigger points that move each NPCs side quest forward as you explore the world
and even easier to do something that completely breaks the progression of these quest lines without even realising it
you'll need to visit specific locations and accomplish certain tasks in a very precise order to further a character's story arc
Progressing a single NPC's quest line through to its conclusion can be a daunting task
but attempting to juggle the interlocking quest lines for each of the the dozen or so NPCs in the game can be utterly nightmarish
is that you'll learn from the mistakes you make on your first Dark Souls III play-through and try something different on your subsequent runs
If you want to get as much out of a single-play through as possible
This guide walks you through the steps you'll need to complete in order to conclude every NPCs quest line in a single run and claim the related rewards
and ensure that you've completed all the listed tasks before moving onto the next boss battle
• Although Dark Souls III offers a certain degree of freedom in terms of how you tackle its challenges
we've chosen a very specific route through the game to ensure that NPC side quests aren't inadvertently broken
but it's unwise to deviant from our plan unless you know exactly what you're doing
the following NPC mini-guide assumes that you're tackling the game's bosses in this order:
if you're following this guide and can't find the NPC you need in its listed location
try forcing progression by warping in an out of the area a few times
try visiting their last known haunt to ensure that you've completed the steps required for them to move on
On the next page we'll take you through everything you need to do before you fight Vordt of the Boreal Valley

AJ O'Neill appears to have joined his father Jonjo on the licence at Jackdaws Castle at an exciting time at a training centre with a proven track record when it comes to producing champions
O'Neill Racing has been through a rebuilding process in recent years
but it feels like now is the time an investment programme based around young talent could bear fruit
"Two years ago we invested in quite a lot of pointers who were bought to go chasing
and this is the year a lot of them will be going over fences followed by another bunch next year
so I'm hoping we'll be quite strong in that department," says AJ

Kotaku’s daily hangout for folks who love video games and the cool-ass sounds they make
Today we take shelter from Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers’ everlasting daylight under the canopy of twisted trees in the Rak’tika Greatwood
which plays whenever a player engages a random enemy
is the single most delightfully unexpected tune on the soundtrack
a simple overland theme for a zone shrouded beneath a canopy of trees
The Rak’tika Greatwood is one of the few dark places in a world assaulted by endless daylight
Imagine flying through the tangled roots of gigantic trees as haunting chanting rises from the forest floor
The words are unintelligible—not even Soken himself knows what they mean—but they stick with you throughout the forest and beyond
“Civilizations’” drums are the heartbeats of those who live in the Rak’tika Greatwoods
embracing what little darkness the world has left
The woodwinds are the breeze blowing through the leaves
whispered warnings of the unrelenting sunlight lurking above the canopy
“Civilizations” is like no other tune in Final Fantasy XIV’s growing collection of soundtracks
which is a pretty amazing feat considering just how much music this one game contains
now seven years in as the game’s sound director
can still crank out something so unusually beautiful speaks to both his skill and the game’s ability to inspire the artists who work on it
Share your muse and your random daily musics in the comments
and we’ll see you back here bright and early tomorrow
2020Sugar Land Police Chief Eric Robins talks about what investigators found inside the home on Brookstone Lane Friday.SUGAR LAND
Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities say the couple who was found inside a home Friday morning in the Greatwood subdivision
is now being investigated as a murder-suicide
was found inside the home in the 1500 block of Brookstone Lane around 10 a.m
Police said Benjamin strangled Theresa to death before attempting to kill both of his 21-year-old sons by strangling them
Police said he then killed himself by hanging
The couple's sons were taken to a hospital with injuries that were believed to be non-life threatening
according to Sugar Land Chief of Police Eric Robins
A third adult child was also at the home when the 911 call was made
Sugar Land police and detectives were at the home at midday and had much of the Greatwood Brooks Mill neighborhood blocked off
The death investigation is at least the second in the community in the past 10 months
a Sugar Land man is believed to have killed his wife and young son before he died by suicide
Our Q&A with Addicted to Quack.
With the Oregon Ducks under coach Chip Kelly, offensive line coach Steve Greatwood helped establish the most explosive offense in the Pac-10
and now will get a chance to make Cal’s offense flow freely
Let’s chat with Alex Rider at Addicted to Quack to learn more about Greatwood
Rider was part of Oregon’s team as a defensive analyst in 2013
and he provides some perspective on the type of offensive linemen Greatwood wants and the schemes he can execute
Greatwood definitely goes with a zone scheme
There's a little bit of man in terms of the pass protection
and that's where with the young guys over the last few years there were some holes in the coverage
But in terms of the run game it's essentially all zone
The goal is always to stretch the defense and rely on the running back to find the gap
It seems like towards the end of the tenure it started to get a little more towards the bigger/stronger type
Maybe this had something to do with the many years of the talk of Oregon "not being strong enough for the big boys"
Greatwood's ideal guy is tall and can move
There's a great emphasis on the lateral quickness and the ability to get out in space and lead block
How successful was Coach Greatwood recruiting
both in the OL and then more broadly the rest of the team
I would say that Greatwood in my opinion put in one of the best recruiting efforts on that coaching staff
That might not be saying much seeing how that spiraled downhill
I still think that John Neal was the best recruiter on the staff
He played a big role in getting Arik Armstead to Oregon
obviously he wanted him to play offense but he still played a big role in getting him to Eugene
He also had a great deal of success in the transfer/juco market
What attributes best sum up Coach Greatwood's coaching style
I would say his coaching style is a tough one to gauge
Some weeks he was really hands on and tough on the players and other weeks he was hands off and let the GA's do the work while he stood back
I think he takes the personality based on the leadership that he has on the line and how they take control
Anyone you ask from the line though would tell you he is one of the greatest teachers they've had
He doesn't put up with anything but at the same point will be there to pick you up when you're down
We've seen some pretty cool stories about Coach Greatwood looking out for his players off the field (grabbing them from the bars)
Did you see any other instances of this behavior that you can share
That's not something I really could envision coming out of Greatwood
I know he cares about his players but that's taking it a whole new step
Unfortunately I don't have any crazy stories along those lines
Who are the biggest success stories for Greatwood in terms of his players
What do you think was his best coaching job
Honestly I think his best coaching job might have been last year
there were plenty of bumps but looking at that lineup there was often times where four redshirt freshmen were taking the field when Tyrell Crosby went down with an injury
That group really started to settle down towards the end of the season and found a way
Otherwise I find his best success story to be most recently Hronis Grasu
He's a guy who might be a little undersized
especially for the next level but he coached him up into an all conference player and one that has an NFL roster spot
do you think Coach Greatwood will succeed at Cal
he's one of the great position coaches in the Pac-12 in my opinion and I was sad to see him go
I see him as not only a great fit working with that coaching staff and offense
Justin Wilcox is pulling Steve Greatwood out of retirement in hopes of fixing Cal's struggling offense
The Cal head coach announced Tuesday the longtime offensive line coach will re-join the program as an analyst
Greatwood retired in 2019 after 40 years in coaching
A Eugene native and a former Oregon Duck himself
Greatwood coached at his alma mater from 1980-94 and again from 2000-16.
Though Greatwood and Wilcox never wore Oregon green and yellow at the same time
the pair have a relationship going back decades thanks to the many Wilcoxes that played for Oregon through the years
And so coming off a loss to winless Colorado
Wilcox has called in one of his most trusted friends and advisors.
“It’s a performance-based business, for the coaches and players alike,” Wilcox said, via Bear Insider
“We have made a couple adjustments with our lineup this season and there’s a potential that could still evolve this week and in coming weeks
we added an analyst to the staff who’s familiar with us
An extra set of eyes and a person who’s universally respected
not only as an offensive line coach but as an offensive coach
Eyes and ears and maybe a little fresh perspective
“Any chance to help make the program better and he’s here to support our staff and we welcome him back.”
The Golden Bears are 11th in the Pac-12 in yards per play (5.58)
and 10th in rushing offense (128.67).
The Bears have three ranked teams on their second-half schedule
plus improved Washington and Oregon State squads

2015Homeowners say cable lines are too low
Christine Dobbyn has the details.GREATWOOD
TX (KTRK) -- Greatwood homeowners saw the work starting outside their windows a couple of weeks ago
Spools were spinning as crews laid fiber optic utility lines
President of the Greatwood Homeowners Association says
"AT&T has a contractor that works in the neighborhood
the contractor is putting up these cables." Take a drive down the street
under the lines and something seemed different to them
"They've got a problem in the neighborhood
I'm surprised they haven't been pulled out by a semi or truck coming through yet," says Molho
where kids jump into the air on trampolines
The homeowners have asked for a meeting with AT&T
A company spokesperson issued this statement:
"We are working diligently to expand and enhance our local network to deliver high-speed Internet access
Our crews are trained to obtain proper permitting
closely follow local construction codes and work to minimize any disruption for residents
Consumers with concerns about local construction can contact us at 281-374-3725
Our work in the area is scheduled to be complete by the end of this year."
By law utility companies have certain rights in the easement area but the law also says after a line is constructed and the company is given opportunity
a municipality could direct change in height
Molho says in their case that would be Fort Bend County
"I say it a lot just because you can doesn't mean you should
We want them to be good neighbors just like the guy who lives here wants his neighbor to be a good neighbor."
Pensacola Catholic’s lackluster finish to the 2017 season was a motivating factor for the Crusaders all through the 2018 season
And after guiding Catholic to the Region 1-2A final – and within an overtime of the state final four – Crusader head coach Del Greatwood is the Pensacola News Journal Boys Soccer Coach of the Year
we really underachieved,” Greatwood said
They definitely stepped up all the boys and I’m really happy for them.”

Greatwood’s Crusaders made the deepest postseason run of any boys soccer team from Escambia or Santa Rosa County this season
a far cry from their elimination in the district semifinals the year before.
It was an effort led by Player of the Year Nelson Libbert (21 goals
10 assists) and sophomore forward Tyler Ryals (20 goals
10 assists) as well as the steadying presence of center back Johnny McDonald and first-year goalkeeper Mack Hamrick
With a youthful side that featured just four total seniors
Catholic (14-2-1) picked up form in district play and stormed to an undefeated record while outscoring opponents 26-1
you’re in a rubbish district,’ but we’re not really,” Greatwood said
“There’s some highly competitive sides out there developing
and that’s when our form was at a height.”
The Crusaders won the district title in a dramatic double overtime thriller with South Walton and won two state tournament games over Gadsden County and Florida State University
The run ended in the regional final against the powerhouse Bolles School
which scored the overtime winner on a Catholic own goal
It’s Greatwood’s second coach of the year award after the London
He’s compiled a 79-20-14 record in those five seasons
though he has a feeling that next year’s Catholic team may be one of his best yet
“We’re looking hot for next season,” Greatwood said
“We’re going to have strength and depth
chemistry and all these boys know each other
“I expect them to go to the same level and maybe peak just over that bridge and take go to that state final four
We’ll start with the state final four and see where we go from there.”

The consensus is that this year’s Greatwood is well up to standard and fiercely competitive, yet unbeaten mare Dysart Enos is still likely to start at under 3-1
The Fergal O'Brien-trained mare hasn’t put a foot wrong in six starts and first served notice of her high-level talent when romping home in the Grade 2 mares' bumper at Aintree in April 2023
She took beautifully to hurdles last season
Taking into account the manner of those wins plus Dysart Enos's sky-high potential
it is no surprise O’Brien has wrapped her in cotton wool and waited for this £100,000 prize off what appears to be a highly favourable mark
“This was the plan ever since we got such a nice mark and we want to exploit it,” O’Brien said
“If we could pull it off on the back of a novice run and first time back
She’s done loads of work and we’re very happy with her
Dysart Enos has winning form on good and soft ground
and O'Brien added: "I think she's pretty versatile in terms of ground and that's why it felt fine planning for this race so far ahead
a massive prize and a very prestigious race."
good to soft in places and selective watering took place after racing on Saturday to maintain that ground for Sunday's action
Nicky Henderson, trainer of Under ControlShe's in excellent shape
This looks a tall order because we are giving weight to some young
progressive horses but she is progressive herself and still a young mare
She ran a cracking race at Galway and will have come on for that
Olly Murphy, trainer of Go DanteI’m looking forward to running him
although I wish the ground was a little bit slower
Dysart Enos and Burdett Road look as though they have nice marks but they have no experience of big-field handicaps
James Owen, trainer of Burdett RoadHis last two runs for us on the Flat were probably the best of his career
He ran very well at Ascot behind some of the best stayers
I know it’s a tough ask in a competitive handicap like this on his fourth run over hurdles
but he's potentially quite well handicapped on his Flat form
He’s coming into the race fit from the Flat and hopefully with a good bit up our sleeve
Ben Pauling, trainer of Fiercely ProudHe's not had the best preparation
having got loose at Cheltenham and then fallen at Ascot
but he's schooled well since and hopefully he can get round this time
Harry Derham, trainer of Teddy BlueHe’s a new horse to us
He seems in good form and will enjoy the ground drying out
It looks a very tough Greatwood and we’ll be delighted if he runs into a place
Nicky Richards, trainer of Florida DreamsI’m hoping for a bit of rain to keep the dust down
We’re putting cheekpieces on for the first time
I imagine it'll be an end-to-end gallop and they might help him concentrate and sharpen him up
He schooled on Friday morning and pleased us
Gary Moore, joint-trainer of Royal WayIt’s got to be good to soft for me to run him
He’s a very nice horse but does want soft ground
If he doesn’t run he’ll go to Newbury or Ascot.Reporting by Richard Birch

Olly Murphy hopes to keep up the momentum following a memorable campaign in which the trainer sent out more than 100 winners for the first time and secured his second Grade 1 with Strong Leader
"We had a good season but we want to build on that again and it looks like we've got a lot of quality coming through – hopefully we can go to the next level again," he says
"We've got some lovely novice hurdlers and chasers this campaign but there's strength in depth across the board

James Owen’s 7-2 chance powered clear three out along with market leader Dysart Enos and got the upper hand over that rival once turning into the home straight
Be Aware briefly looked a big danger when coming out of the chasing pack to mount a late challenge
but Harry Cobden was always in control on the Gredley family-owned Burdett Road and they prevailed by half a length
Trainer James Owen – whose East India Dock impressed on Saturday in the same colours – said: “It was a great performance
Tim (Gredley) and I both agreed that we were going to change tactics
we’ve learnt a lot on the Flat with him this time and we wanted to make the running
“He settled lovely and Harry gave him a fantastic ride
jumped impeccably for a four-year-old and for me
He looked like he was going to get caught but he’s just gone again
“He’s a lovely horse and it’s a great performance from a four-year-old in a strong race – and this horse wants cut in the ground as well
so we’re really looking forward to the rest of the season with him
“It’s the first time he’s really given himself a chance in a race; jumped
he added: “It’s still a long way to go but obviously on his Flat form
he’s more than capable of getting there and we’ll aim that way
I’m not sure where we’ll go next but I’m sure it will be a graded race somewhere
“It’s lovely to get these good horses and do the job for the Gredley family
my wife’s a big part of the team and it’s just a shame Tim and the Gredley family aren’t here
but I’m sure they’ll be cheering at home.”
Burdett Road won his first two starts over hurdles last season before finishing second to Sir Gino and he was then forced to miss the Triumph at the Festival
he got back on track with a successful Flat campaign this summer
which included a wide-margin win in Listed company at Newmarket
Winning rider Cobden said: “All credit to James and the job he has done with this horse
He said there was no speed in the race today
so let’s rock and roll – the horse settled nicely
jumped great and just gave himself a chance
He’s improved a hell of a lot and he even did that this summer on the Flat
but you have to chuck him in the (Champion Hurdle) mix now
Burdett Road is 33-1 with Coral for the Champion Hurdle
A year on from James Owen promising Burdett Road would be the real deal
the four-year-old justified his huge reputation with a commanding success in the Unibet Greatwood Hurdle to emerge as a Champion Hurdle candidate
His freegoing mentality over hurdles was the only concern for backers of the 7-2 second favourite
but his professionalism and raw talent ensured he put up the performance of his life
This was also the biggest winner so far in the career of Owen
who started as a dominant player on the Arab racing circuit but is now an increasing presence in the thoroughbred world
A year on from his Graded-race breakthrough in the Triumph Trial at this meeting
the Newmarket trainer now has a contender for the Cheltenham Festival’s signature hurdling contest – a race for which Burdett Road is now as short as 25-1 – as well as a 2025 Derby contender in Wimbledon Hawkeye
who has played a prominent role in the emergence of Owen's stable as a force over jumps
allowed Burdett Road to take his trademark position at the front of affairs but racing more coolly than when blitzing his rivals here 12 months ago
Burdett Road may not be bred for hurdling but he was slick over the obstacles as Cobden dictated a strong tempo
taking a wide passage in search of better ground
labelled by some pundits as the best-handicapped jumper in Britain and Ireland
looked set to threaten as Jonathan Burke manoeuvred Fergal O’Brien's stable star into a position to strike
her unbeaten record under rules on the line
A confident Cobden kicked and the front two traded blows with little between them
Only in the final 100 yards did the gutsy mare finally give way as Burdett Road approached the line with Be Aware
representing the red-hot Dan and Harry Skelton partnership
“Tim Gredley [joint-owner] and I agreed we were going to change tactics
We learned a lot with Burdett Road on the Flat and wanted to make the running
He settled lovely and Harry gave him a fantastic ride
“He jumped impeccably for a four-year-old and was just idling up the hill
It looked like he was going to get caught but when the other horse came to him he’s just gone again
“It was a strong race and he really wants cut in the ground
I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season with him
“There’s a long way to go until the Champion Hurdle
Obviously on his Flat form he’s more than capable of getting there
We’ll aim that way and I’m not sure where we’ll go next
although I’m sure it will be a Graded race.”
Much has changed since a teenage Cobden announced himself with victory aboard Old Guard in this race nine years ago
and he said: “James was keen for us to go forward and it was absolutely the right thing to do as there wasn’t much speed in the race on paper
"He gave himself a chance in front because he looked at all his hurdles
he’s relaxed more and we’re seeing the effects of that as all he’ll do is keep improving
Whether he’s Champion Hurdle class I’m not quite sure
but he won’t be far off that by the end of the season hopefully.”
was beaten three and a half lengths but Burke was encouraged by her first start since January
He said: "She jumped the best she’s ever done
We were hoping the speed of the race would help her and it did
Every time she saw a hurdle she attacked it
She even gave me the confidence after two out to sit again and it was only after the point of the bend that I thought I wouldn't win
“The winner is a good horse and there are plenty of positives to take from the run of our mare
We can be more adventurous with the way we ride her in future
