Rumors about the closure of the Corelle Brands distribution center in Greencastle were confirmed in an April 10 filing with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry
The plant at 12000 Molly Pitcher Highway will close late in the year
with three waves of job cuts affecting more than 300 employees
according to the WARN (Worker Readjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notice
The 323 workers will receive assistance from PA Rapid Response within the Department of Labor and Industry. Because of the nature of their jobs, L. Michael Ross, president of the Franklin County Area Development Corp.
is optimistic they will quickly find other work in the area
“We had been hearing unconfirmed rumors of a potential closure for several weeks and I subsequently reached out
for confirmation of the rumors,” Ross said
“The rumor was ultimately confirmed by the WARN notification issued publicly on April 10
especially with the lack of communication.”

warehousing and logistics sector is roughly $34 an hour
Transportation and logistics have boomed in recent years and today account for 13% of the total Franklin County workforce

our office has not been made aware of any specific marketing plan(s),” Ross said
“It should be noted that our office has a long-time relationship with Matrix and we will provide whatever assistance is requested.”

Easter eve storm leaves damage behindEaster Sunday morning I was out early to inspect the storm damage from the 10 p.m
Greencastle police patrol had given me an update late Saturday night after the storm had passed
A borough employee was very busy removing trees and limbs
opening all the borough streets and some PennDOT streets as well
In consultation with Council President Larry Faight
I authored a disaster declaration proclamation specific to the storm in case it would have been more widespread throughout Franklin County
The declaration is the first step in emergency management in the event assistance (resources) that would be needed from the county
state and federal governments (Pennsylvania and Federal Emergency Management)
This is the system I have worked with over the decades
If a storm event reaches Pennsylvania and Federal declarations
funding may be available for mitigation to municipal governments and property owners
We didn’t reach that threshold with this storm
the sounds of chain saws and chippers could be heard throughout the borough
Greencastle and Franklin County Emergency Management surveyed the damage and sent reports up the chain
Volunteers and contractors were at Jerome R

An estimated 100 residents were helped off loading their bulk items
The 1944 Echo Pilot newspaper reported the Salvage Committee of the Greencastle Defense Council “reports 495 tons of scrap metal collected here in 1943.” Wow

The Greencastle-Antrim School District has been named a Great Pennsylvania School
awarded by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association
recognizes schools that provide students with access to rigorous programming
demonstrate financial well-being and display resilience
“We are honored to receive this recognition and proud of the efforts our staff
students and community make to keep our district thriving,” Superintendent Lura Hanks said
“We are a community that values education and recognizes that the health of our schools directly relates to the prosperity of our community.”
districts must meet criteria in four categories: academically rigorous programming
Districts must confirm that 100% of their teachers are certified and that students have access to career and technical education
advanced placement or international baccalaureate courses
a district must exemplify innovation in school programming
regularly celebrate the successes of students and staff
and provide academic and extracurricular offerings for the benefit of students
The resilience criteria require a district to implement an emergency preparedness plan and provide mental health supports to students
A district meets the financially healthy criteria by having an elected or independent auditor conduct a financial audit annually
making the final district budget available for public review prior to adoption
and following School Code requirements for bids and quotations when purchasing goods and services
the campaign website houses information about the role and responsibilities of a school board
how to run for a position on a local school board
and a collective vision for the future of public education in Pennsylvania

The owner of the former Bronze and Granite
pleaded guilty to bilking dozens of customers out of nearly $200,000
but will avoid jail time if he makes restitution of $50,000 prior to sentencing on May 29
In March 2023, Greencastle police began investigating claims by Bronze and Granite customers that Richard Randolph Freeman Jr
didn’t follow through on orders and placement of memorials
As first reported: Greencastle Bronze and Granite, owner charged for allegedly failing to fulfill agreements
is facing 74 charges of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds – 66 felonies and eight misdemeanors
He entered into the plea agreement before Judge Mary Beth Shank in Franklin County Court on Wednesday
If the $50,000 is paid prior to sentencing
71 of the charges will be dropped and he will get seven consecutive years of probation – a total of 21 years – on three felony charges and avoid state prison
First Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Faust
This is an incentive for Freeman to “pony up … and make these people whole,” Faust said in court
If Freeman fails to pay the $50,000 in time
he is looking at five to 30 years in state prison
reported she entered into an agreement with Freeman for various headstone services on April 11
according to charging documents originally filed in the office of Magisterial District Judge Duane Cunningham in Greencastle
The woman told police she prepaid Freeman the full amount for the job
and was told it would be completed in three or four months
received multiple excuses and promised dates of installation throughout 2022 and heading into March 2023
“Each victim has contacted the business and/or the defendant directly and been given multiple excuses and/or fabrications as to why the work was not completed and/or has promised dates of installation
anniversaries and special days in the victims lives for the work to be completed and in the end
the work has not been completed,” according to charging documents
more victims contacted police with “almost identical business practices and experience with the defendant,” the paperwork said
The incidents began in 2019 and continued into early 2023
affecting people from throughout Franklin County and surrounding counties in Pennsylvania
as well as nearby states including Maryland and Virginia
Shortly after the allegations came to light
a “for rent” sign went up at the business at 400 N
Fifteen victims or their representatives gathered in the hallway and were in the courtroom for Freeman’s plea
said they were some of Freeman’s last victims
They paid $3,295 in early 2023 for a double tombstone they never received
When they called Bronze and Granite sometime later
said Freeman knew what he was doing when he met with them because he had already scammed so many others
Jenn Sension of Greencastle and Stacy Tiffany of Fairfield
They paid cash for her marker and “got ripped off.” Eventually
a friend in the business heard what happened and helped them get a marker for their mother’s grave
but it still wasn’t cheap and they said they would like restitution
The judge read the names of all 74 victims aloud
She said while this is a crime of property – in this case money – it “isn’t like having a bike stolen.”
There are emotional aspects to the case and the court can’t take away the victim’s pain but “can make these folks financially whole,” Shank said
priority will be given to victims who have been unable to replace markers and get closure
A payment plan will then be set up for the rest of the restitution
There are a variety of scenarios associated with the plea agreement
ranging from what happens if Freeman doesn’t pay the $50,000 by the sentencing date to what happens if he pays the full restitution of around $198,000
Faust noted that the maximum sentence for all the theft charges would have totaled 464 years in prison and fines of $975,000
giving brief answers to questions from Shank and Faust with the assistance of his attorney
He admitted using the money for his own benefit
but it has not been specified how it was spent
He declined to comment in the courthouse hallway afterwards
charges of being a felon attempting to buy a weapon and “unsworn falsification” were withdrawn
Attempt to buy a rifle: Former Bronze and Granite, Greencastle, owner faces different charges
Freeman allegedly tried to buy a rifle at Lumber Direct
in the office of Magisterial District Judge Duane Cunningham.“The defendant has multiple DUI convictions that makes him a federal prohibitor from purchasing and/or possessing any weapon,” according to charging documents
The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Ronald Drive, Greencastle, PA. Emergency responders arrived at the scene following an initial report of a motorcycle accident. Despite efforts to provide immediate medical attention
the individual succumbed to their injuries
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin
Preliminary investigations indicate that no other vehicles were involved
Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses to determine the exact cause of the accident
Kate Knaul has been in the midst of a whirlwind
getting her feet wet as executive director of MainStreet Greencastle and doing what she can to draw residents and guests downtown to play
"It has been a whirlwind of three months
My role is to help connect people and make sure MainStreet is focused on ensuring we have a thriving downtown
We have business leaders and business owners who are supported with the resources and information they need to succeed
We also want to make sure we have a city center that people want to come to
spend time in and enjoy the space," Knaul told The Putnam County Post
The whirlwind will continue through the summer months with First Friday
"It is exciting and a little bit overwhelming to take this on
This has been going on for 11 years and this is the 12th year of First Friday's
it feels like it started yesterday and it has only grown since its beginning
There's a lot of weight on my shoulders to make sure this event continues to go off well," Knaul admitted.
Knaul said First Friday events feature something for everyone.
Lost Hollow and Moore's providing those anchor points of food and music
It is tremendous and several blocks are shut down for people to come out
there's couple thousand people who come out and we have a good time
We will have a kids zone with activities oriented to kids and families
There is something for everyone and it is a few fun hours downtown
and an opportunity for our businesses to capitalize on people knowing they are there," she said.
The festivities will occur in a time when downtown merchants continue to rebound from several years plagued by Covid-19 and then U.S
"We did a survey of downtown business owners to see what the challenges are
what's working and there are a lot of different types of businesses
There are close to 100 businesses right in the MainStreet area
but a lot of them are struggling with construction and rising costs
as well as a lot of uncertainty for consumers
One of the exciting things is we can offer a cohort of workshops that we can offer to business owners
My hope is to bring folks together and see how we can be creative and direct people to one another's businesses," Knaul said.
With school winding down and temperatures warming up
Greencastle Mayor Lynda Dunbar knows those two things can only mean one thing -- it won't be long before families start flocking to Robe-Ann Park and other parks throughout the city of Greencastle.
Robe Ann Park is ready to welcome crowds and will see a busy season this year
as the July 4th fireworks will return after being at Big Walnut Sports Park last year
the Putnam County Fair Parade will step off from Robe Ann Park
and the park will host the Putnam County Farmers Market
"There are a lot of events that will be happening at Robe-Ann," Dunbar told The Putnam County Post.
Dunbar said donation letters have already been sent out for the fireworks show.
"We are planning on having a nice fireworks show and we are excited about that," Dunbar said
she said she is excited about the return of the Farmer's Market back to Robe-Ann Park.
"We have construction downtown and a lot of our downtown businesses are closed during the Farmers Market time
and it is an opportunity to show off the new improvements at the park to the community," Dunbar said.
There are also renovations to the aquatic center at Robe Ann Park
"There will be some new and exciting things at the pool this summer
and we may try to extend the hours if we can maintain staffing
We invested a chunk of money in that and should save money in chemicals
It will be much more efficient and we shouldn't have too many problems not passing our tests
There are a lot of positives happening at the park," Dunbar said.
Dunbar said the upgrades at Robe Ann Park will also extend to Emerald Palace later this year
as there will be a fundraising drive this fall to help aid with an upgrade.
"You will see news for the fundraiser to spruce that up
and we are super excited about that and the major facelift
It gives the community an opportunity to come together and really transform something that will serve generations to come
and we are ready to reinvest for the next 25 years," Dunbar said.
Residents in the city of Greencastle will see some improvements when it comes to the party lights along Indiana Street
the party lights will need to come off the buildings
We are going to put the poles up kind of like they have on Georgia Street with the party lights going across and we are going to expand that a little ways down past Breadworks
we will see the new street lights being put up
redevelopment will approve that this Wednesday and we can work to get the new
decorative streetlights up on Jackson Street
Excited about that," Dunbar told The Putnam County Post.
Dunbar said preliminary work has already begun as to what a facelift to downtown Greencastle would look like.
Dunbar said the city's sidewalk project will be going out to bid soon and will feature repairs to sidewalks all over town
