The former McLaren Greater Lansing Greenlawn campus is getting new life as the hub for a mid-Michigan charity
Child and Family Charities serves more than 20,000 people annually
But its offerings are currently spread across five locations
CEO Julie Thomasma says her staff currently works shoulder to shoulder and getting to the offices poses a challenge for people who rely on public transportation
But she says that’s changing as the charity begins its takeover of a former hospital located right next to a bus stop
“This new campus is more than bricks and walls
It’s a symbol of what we can accomplish together.”
Among those the charity has helped is a mid-Michigan woman raising her granddaughter
Carol Swayze moved back to Michigan eight years ago to help her son raise his daughter
she says she became a 62-year-old single parent of an infant
She says the Family Growth and Resource Center has provided food
“Family Growth Center didn’t just help us with the things we needed
“And those things are the most important; the hope that life will change and get better.”
The charity celebrated the opening of the first part of its new campus during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon
More of the campus will open this summer with laundry facilities

Her social world was also large where she was a friend to many whose lives she touched
Betty attended Springfield’s Central High School

Betty immediately took leave and boarded a bus for Springfield
she ascertained Don had survived and was in hospital at St
[The following are Betty’s words recorded Thursday
And here was this cute little nurse sitting on his bed
she shouldn’t have been sitting on his bed
I’m so glad you’re here.’”
Betty’s nursing career continued for many years with her attaining Head Nurse status
and setting the bar for what a great “floor” should be
Starting with a very high level of expectation from her staff
to a professionalism from doctors (one of whom she made publicly apologize to everyone on the floor when Betty learned he’d made disparaging remarks)
Betty’s commitment to excellence even impressed a doctor’s wife (also a nurse) who was a patient on her floor
you and your staff have renewed my faith in the nursing profession!”
Don’s career also took off at the Dayco International Division with visiting clients from Japan

“I’d like to get you this as part of your inheritance so I can enjoy watching everyone stay there.” The family responded
Betty Louise Clinkenbeard was one of a kind who inspired many and will be remembered and loved by family and friends from all phases of her life

INDIANAPOLIS — Rich history is buried at the site of the former Greenlawn Cemetery along the white river
It was the city’s first public burial ground and is believed to be the largest resting place for Black people in Indiana
“I call it a treasure trove of Black history buried there,” said Eunice Trotter
the Director of Indiana Landmarks Black Heritage Preservation Program
Trotter joined lead genealogist Duane Perry and a handful of others to dig into the Black history buried more than 200 years ago at the former Greenlawn Cemetery
I was this close to saying I can't do this anymore
but I could not stop because of the special people buried there,” said Perry
“It’s almost like they grabbed the back of my neck and said you got to keep going
Perry works with the Indiana African American Genealogical Group
which is helping with the Greenlawn Cemetery project ‘Researching Our Past to Preserve Our Legacy.’
He’s looking at the stories of Black pioneers and trailblazers buried on the grounds
some who even escaped slavery to start new lives in the Hoosier State
One of the founders of Bethel AME Church was buried there,” Trotter explained
Soldiers also had ties to the burial grounds
“The US Colored Troops and Indiana had its own regiment
“Two of the people I found that were buried at Greenlawn were William Wesley Goff and Jacob Ross.”
The two also believe the great-great-grandfather of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali was buried there
Hundreds of Hoosiers of all races were believed to be buried at Greenlawn
which served as the city’s first public cemetery that dates back to the early 1820s
Perry told WRTV there were not a lot of records on African Americans then so they started looking at mortality records from 1871 to 1882
they were able to compile a list of 1,200 Black Hoosiers
The team narrowed the list down to those above 17 years old and came up with around 461 names to begin researching
“My maternal grandmother was an only child
documented descendant of four historically Black settlements based here in Indiana,” he said
Williams told WRTV he’s connected to Emeliza Winburn and Burton Turner
and their team are trying to piece together answers for families and the community

You're like a rootless tree,” Trotter said
Greenlawn closed and held its last burial in 1890
Many families who were able to move their loved one’s graves did to various cemeteries
estimates predict hundreds of remains are still at Greenlawn
Development at the site has happened multiple times
including Diamond Chain and even the first and largest electric railway in the U.S
Now part of the new Henry Street Bridge is designed to run through the cemetery
It’s why the preservation team joined the Indianapolis Department of Public Works who called in a team of archeologists to carefully evacuate the remains so they can be researched
WATCH | Henry Street Bridge Project digs up the past
and I want to be a part of telling that story,” Perry said
the city said they've found 282 grave shafts in the 1.5 acres of land controlled by them
Trotter told WRTV they want to eventually have a memorial honoring Black history at the site
They plan to hold a public exhibit at the Central Library in September sharing their research and AI renderings
Jim Gargus was a man of the highest moral caliber
Jim brought great pride to his parents from a young age
graduating as valedictorian of Windyville High School and earning a full ride scholarship to a local university
It was just the beginning of a life lived with great work ethic
Jim met the love of his life at a rehearsal for an upcoming school play
and Marilee was to accompany him on the piano
“Jim sang with his heart,” Marilee recalled with feeling
“but I played the notes precisely.” Afterwards Jim told his cousin that he would marry that girl one day
The two went on to build a beautiful life full of love
laughter and unwavering devotion to one another
“He was the best man in the world,” and no one could put it better
His grandchildren all looked to him as the steadfast rock of the family
He served as a deacon in three churches throughout his life

dedicating time each week to further studying and internalizing God’s word
Countless people were touched by his devotion in and outside of the church
Over the years Jim worked tirelessly in various capacities

He could even read upside down from his time as a LinoType machine operator
and write poetry; his poems were frequently featured in the local newspaper

He got perhaps no greater joy than when he was spending time with his grand – and great-grand– children
His six grandchildren all fondly recall how he would crack peanuts to share or take them for rides on the lawn mower
His love was equally apparent for his four great-grandchildren as well
it is nearly impossible to find a picture of Jim where he doesn’t have a child on his lap
He was the greatest grandfather one could ask for
and his impact on those who knew him will be felt for years to come

The doctor mistakenly recorded his birthday as June 21 and
thought his parents said “Denzilee.” Believing they’d forgotten a middle name
Denzil’s legal name became Denzilee Edward Owen—a charming mix-up that would become a family favorite story
Denzil was the beloved son of Willam James and Belva Mae Owen and cherished sibling to his sister
He grew up on his family farm where he learned the value of hard work
which has since blossomed into a legacy of 39 grandchildren and great-grandchildren

remaining active and purposeful until his final days

Virginia Lee (Michaelis) Thompson of Springfield
She died peacefully following a battle with Alzheimer’s and pneumonia
Virginia Lee was born the only child of Pauline Hammond
and returned to Carthage before High School
with Fred being captain and star football player and Virginia becoming Homecoming Queen
Virginia told the story that when she was crowned Queen
but because he had sustained an injury to his jaw with excessive bandages
she had no idea how she was going to do it
They endured the challenge of being separated when Fred was drafted into the Korean War shortly after their first child was born
just prior to the birth of their fourth child in 1960
often playing in her living room and giving lessons to children in her community
in addition to flower arranging in her later years
She attended Drury University pursuing a degree in music before getting married and focusing on her family
she worked as the principal’s secretary at Sequiota Elementary School
and then several years for State Farm agents’ offices
Virginia is mostly remembered for her vibrant personality and ability to talk to anyone about anything anytime
she received a wrong- number phone call and struck up a conversation lasting minutes to an hour
Virginia also tells the story of being born with a tongue tie
which could have limited her speaking ability
and how she was glad this was fixed in her youth so she could talk
would often imagine his lifetime of peace had this not been fixed
Fred was an avid outdoorsman and shared this passion with Virginia
as she and the family would join him for fishing and camping excursions
Fred was dismayed to learn that Virginia was one of the luckiest people on earth and would often out-fish him
A famous picture of the two of them shows Fred proudly holding up the Atlantic shark that Virginia had caught
She also loved harvesting oysters and collecting hundreds
which one grandson and his wife were lucky enough to inherit
She was always a jokester and loved doing pranks on friends and family: like the time she dressed herself and Fred in overalls
and corn cob pipes to meet important friends of Fred’s brother and wife
Fred and Virginia enjoyed traveling around the country in their motor home
camping at their favorite campgrounds in Florida and Minnesota
They always added more lifelong friends in their travels
they also enjoyed taking the bus to the casinos to play video poker
Virginia is preceded in her passing by her mother and stepfather
Fred whom she shared 65 years of marriage until his passing in 2016
She is survived by her 4 children; Gail (husband Gary) Drennan
and Tim Thompson; along with 12 grandchildren
Anyone who met Virginia Lee was a friend; she knew no strangers
We are all CERTAIN that she was pleased to enjoy one more bit of mischief by leaving this earth on April Fool’s Day
After almost 95 enthusiastic and adventure-filled years of life, Virginia Lee (Michaelis) Thompson of Springfield, Missouri, was reunited with Fred, her husband of 65+ years, as she entered heaven on Tuesday, April 1st. North shore residents are reporting a huge increase in drone activity - especially at night - when mysterious drones crisscross the night sky
and flocks of drones gather - and then hover over a particular house or building - and then zoom away
Northport and East Northport have been hotbeds of drone sightings on Long Island - but nothing like the hundreds of drone sitings in New Jersey
and not something else," reported Melinda Valdati of Greenlawn on the NextDoor app
An East Northport resident reported large groups of drones zooming back and forth over his house
Some of the drones have been the size of cars
with one New Jersey Sheriff sending up his own commercial-grade drone to follow and track the huge mysterious drones - only for the drones to quickly lose his drone in the dark
Governor Kathy Hochul was forced to close Stewart Airport in Westchester
as drones were spotted in restricted airspace
US Congressman Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) accused the Pentagon of “hiding the truth” about the drones, which, he claimed, were coming from an Iranian spy “mothership.” At least until all three of Iran's Spy Motherships were located still in the Persian Gulf
Some cynics declare that it is just like New Jersey in 1938
when Orson Welles scared the nation half to death with the radio drama “The War of the Worlds,” which took place in the Garden State
the focus of unexplained and unsettling phenomena moved West where
and California led the nation in UFO sightings by people scanning the sky for signs of extraterrestrial life
in the TV show “The X-Files,” epitomized their type with his basement office poster declaring: “I want to believe.”
there has been many reports of mysterious drone sightings across New Jersey
These sightings have sparked concern among residents and local officials
concerns which have not been alleyed by the responses of the FBI
Here are the key points related to the sighting of drones in the US Northeast:
Size and Behavior: Many of the drones reported are described as larger than typical consumer drones—some even likened to the size of SUVs
Some of the drones have been reported to display triangular light patterns
Some of the sightings report groups of up to eight drones hovering or moving in formation. They often fly in coordinated patterns
especially when hovering over sensitive infrastructure such as reservoirs and power lines
and sometimes operate with their lights off
These drones can fly in challenging weather and remain airborne for hours
which suggests advanced technology beyond hobbyist use
Impact on Safety: Some drones have disrupted emergency operations
was reportedly delayed from transporting a critically injured patient due to the presence of drones in the area
Government Responses: Local and state officials have demanded greater transparency and federal action
and lawmakers from New York and New Jersey
have urged federal agencies like the FAA and DHS to investigate
The Biden FBI and DHS claim that none of the sightings have been verified to have been drones at all
But critics - from President-elect Donald Trump to the New York Post - dismiss the Biden government flacks as habitual liars
“We are supporting local law enforcement in New Jersey with numerous detection methods but have not corroborated any of the reported visual sightings with electronic detection,” US authorities said in a statement
it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft
There are no reported or confirmed drone sightings in any restricted air space.”
Speculation and Theories: There are several theories or speculations about the phenomenon
Some express concerns about foreign involvement
The Pentagon dismissed Congressman Van Drew’s claim
“There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States," said Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh
Former Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.)
suggested that the drone sightings may be coming from just one private company that is testing its own experimental drones
“Each of these drones have a green light on the right
So either the aliens and Iranians are complying with FAA law or it's something else,” stated Kinzinger
"You're allowed to fly over military bases and sensitive national security areas
small planes and pilots do this all the time and there's no restriction on it."
Other experts cite the recent loss of a significant amount of nuclear material from a New Jersey shipping crate
and theorize that the drones might be government drones scanning New Jersey and New York for a nuclear radiation signature
an Army research and development facility about 35 miles west of New York City
Calls for Action: Lawmakers are pushing for stronger regulations on drones
including enhanced tracking technologies and stricter penalties for misuse
Some have even suggested grounding all drones temporarily or involving the military to address potential risks
