— A possible school threat was likely diverted after a SWAT team and police found fake guns at an apartment on W
Forest Home Avenue and Allenwood Lane Wednesday night
a high school student and their mother were taken into custody
The Hales Corners Police Department issued a release late Wednesday detailing the search warrant for a home and car on W
The release stated the search was conducted because of a "potential risk of school violence."
Whitnall School District parents said they were sent a vague release from the school
'This sounds like there may have been a potential threat at some point
but now there is no immediate threat,' so that was worrisome for me," parent Lyris Medrano said
Watch: Potential threat of school violence thwarted after police and SWAT search in Hales Corners
Below is the notice that was sent out to families:
"I wish there had been a little more information or a link to where I could find more information regarding what the threat was
It was a little disappointing to me that I had to seek that out myself," Medrano explained
Medrano said she eventually found the Hales Corners Police Department's release that detailed the search warrant executed because of a "potential risk of school violence."
"It's very scary that it's so close to home
that there's a potential threat like that to our kids and our community
it makes me really happy and proud of my community because obviously someone spoke up," Medrano said
We called and eventually showed up at the Whitnall School District Thursday
A spokesperson for the district said no one was available for an interview but that we could send questions to be answered via email
which were responded to with "no comment."
HCPD did confirm they found fake firearms inside the apartment during the search
police said they believe there is no threat to the community
Police said no criminal charges are being filed
that potentially an act of school violence was prevented," Medrano added

The Village of Hales Corners Library Board has voted unanimously to uphold a decision to keep three books in the library's circulation after a resident sought to pull them from the shelves
ending a process that started 19 months ago
The contents in the first book help teenagers and young adults with LGBTQ-related issues
while the latter two specialize in sex education for teens and young adults between the ages of 12 and 18
Library Director Stephanie Lewin-Lane said at the meeting
"We want these three books removed because they are offensive and cause division among the people in our community with different faiths," Schram said during the meeting
People both for and against pulling the book nearly filled the room
Children accompanied by adults held up signs in support of Schram
while people in support of LGBTQ rights filled multiple rows of seats
the Library Board concluded that library staff followed proper protocols during the books' review process and determined the books were permitted to remain in the library
The complaints about the three books began in February of 2023According to a Journal Sentinel open records request sent to the Hales Corners Library:
and spoke with Assistant Library Manager Seth Harrison to ask how to request to remove books
Schram was told that she could speak to the library director to start the reconsideration process and was given a reconsideration form
and on March 23 submitted the reconsideration form for the three book titles
Lewin-Lane and two librarians began the review process
which took roughly three months to complete
Each had to read all three books during the review process
the library director determined that the books aligned with the library's overarching goal of providing open access to knowledge and information and the books were not removed from the library
the library collection policy and supporting documents
and a copy of Schram's reconsideration request letter were mailed to Schram on July 25
Schram received this information in the mail on July 29
the library board updated the reconsideration policy to include a 35-day time period from the receipt of report in order to appeal a reconsideration request decision
A letter was sent to Schram on April 26 to inform her of the appeal process and let her know she had 35 days to file an appeal
Schram then sent an appeal letter to the library on May 21 stating she disagreed with the decision and that she had acquired 180 signatures in support of the books' removal
the Library Board voted to hear the appeal during the meeting on Aug
More: These books have been banned or restricted at Wisconsin school libraries
The official Hales Corners Library Collection Development Policy is a six-page document which
describes the process to remove a book from the library
The choice of library materials by library users is an individual matter
What is the procedure for reconsideration requests? The library acknowledges that the diversity of materials within the library may result in requests for reconsideration
a procedure was created to assure objections or complaints are handled in the proper manner
according to Hales Corners Library policies
The formal process for reconsideration of library material is as follows:

at the Clement Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee since he became paralyzed in a construction accident 35 years ago
"They take such good care of him," Phil's wife LuAnn Bird told the Journal Sentinel in an email Thursday
"After countless hospital stays over the years and many complications
we have become like a family with the staff
LuAnn said that "there's a peace of mind" that comes with having a familiar care team
and it's become even more important recently as the Birds have spent more time at the VA as Phil's health has continued to decline
LuAnn said it was "painful" to learn at Phil's annual physical that Milwaukee VA doctors and nurses had received letters offering them severance pay and benefits through September if they resigned by Feb
LuAnn said she knew about Trump's plans to "reduce the federal workforce," but "never in (her) wildest dreams" thought it could affect her husband's doctors
She added she's thankful that none of Phil's doctors or nurses
LuAnn said there's been a lot of stress and confusion for VA patients and families who've heard about the letters
It causes uncertainty for us because we don't know who's going to stay and who's going to leave."
LuAnn said that Phil "is her inspiration" and ensuring that community spaces were accessible for him set the stage for her career in activism
"I ran twice because I'm very dissatisfied with the political system
not working for us." She added that the buyouts are "just another example" of this
more people should know how it's affecting Americans
LuAnn said she sent letters speaking out against the buyouts to Trump
she said she's only received a response from Baldwin's office and plans to set up a meeting with the senator
"Washington spends more than $6.75 trillion a year
I support efforts to weed out waste and fraud in our government's spending," Rep
Steil said in a statement shared with the Journal Sentinel
"Doing so will allow us to properly fund our top priorities including supporting our veterans and their families
I've worked to increase access to care for veterans and I am continuing those efforts as we also work to get federal spending under control."
