“If you look on the coastside and throughout San Mateo County
finding affordable housing is very difficult,” said Supervisor Ray Mueller
“It’s just a really exciting project both for what it means for our community and what it means for farmworker housing in the state.”
The homes are manufactured by Skyline Homes
a company specializing in factory-built mobile homes based in Woodland
the homes are trucked to the site in Half Moon Bay to be installed in the new community
about two-thirds of the site’s infrastructure
including the laying out of new roads and placement of utilities underground
which should open to farmworkers by June 16
initially only included 28 homes on the site
“After we identified the lot with the city of Half Moon Bay
we quickly did an assessment and realized it could accommodate even more homes,” he said
Officials collected $16 million in federal, state and local funding, including at least $6 million from the county’s own budget to fund the project
Approvals for other housing developments for farmworkers are moving their way through the city and county. Just last June, city leaders approved a 40-unit affordable housing project for very low-income senior farmworkers
despite receiving appeals from locals who sought to block the project because it could lead to more traffic and have impacts on parking

The Half Moon Bay City Council has approved plans for a proposed hotel at 1200 Main Street in Downtown Half Moon Bay, San Mateo County
The project will bring over a hundred hotel rooms to a former auto dealership after nearly a decade of review
Greg Jamison of RGJC South LLC is the project sponsor
The City Council unanimously approved the hotel in spite of a recommendation for denial by the city’s Planning Commission
The project has been under review for nearly a decade
The City of Half Moon Bay has adopted the Environmental Impact Report and determined that plans for the 129-key hotel have been approved
and monitoring plans were made as a condition of the approval
The EIR had been informed by over a hundred comment letters submitted in 2022
Hyatt Place Proposal stoops overlooking the footpath
The proposal will create 102 rooms across 66,270 square feet
The project will dedicate two acres of the five-acre property as open space habitat restoration and a natural buffer area
The site plans allow for the potential development of around 16 dwelling units along Seymour Street in the future
AXIS/GFA Architecture and Design is responsible for drafting the plans
The illustrations show a Farmhouse Modern design language imbued across the complex
influenced by the oceanside city’s rural and agricultural character
Facade materials will include wood board and batten siding
The five-acre property is located at the south end of Main Street
Future guests will be less than a mile from the town center and a roughly 25-minute walk from Poplar Beach
Construction is expected to last around a year and a half from groundbreaking to completion. Speaking with Coastside News
the developer shared his plan to start construction within the next five years

From Carol Hunter and Hilary Stamper February 2025
CA – Half Moon Bay has a new venue for community fun and activity: a beginning line dancing class offered through Half Moon Bay Parks and Recreation
led by local dance enthusiasts and community leaders Hilary Stamper and Carol Hunter of Coastside Country
the class has already outgrown its original venue
with 60 participants registered for the six-week series—an incredible testament to the enthusiasm for country dance on the Coastside
Enrollment in the full series is waitlisted
first met 16 years ago with Coastside Green Mother’s Club and have been deeply involved in the community ever since
and Parks and Recreation Commissioner with the city
while Carol has been a reporter for the Half Moon Bay Review
the regional commissioner of Coastside AYSO
and currently works as an associate program manager for Healthy Living at Stanford University
Their shared love for dance and community engagement led them to create Coastside Country
a platform dedicated to bringing people together through movement
“It is so special to be able to share an activity we love with the community that we love,” said Carol
“Line dancing has the ability to bring people from all ages and ideologies together
We are thrilled to bring this experience to the Coastside.”
“I love how line dancing makes dancing so accessible to so many people who otherwise feel shy to dance in public
By taking a lot of the thinking out of the equation
people can enjoy moving with others in a less self-conscious way,” added Hilary
“Plus it’s a great workout bundled together with a country music flash mob
We’re beyond excited to see so many folks showing up.”
Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a complete beginner
No partner is required—just a love for music and movement

Ayudando Latinos A Soñar (ALAS) founder Dr. Belinda Hernandez-Arriaga poses for a portrait at the ALAS office in Half Moon Bay, California, on Monday, Dec. 16, 2024. Hernandez-Arriaga founded ALAS in 2011 to support the Latino community in Half Moon Bay. (Juliana Yamada/KQED)This story was reported for K Onda KQED, a monthly newsletter focused on the Bay Area’s Latinx community. Click here to subscribe.
On a rainy morning a few weeks before Christmas, Belinda Hernandez-Arriaga arrived at California Terra Garden, a mushroom farm in Half Moon Bay, with about two dozen staff and volunteers from the nonprofit Ayudando Latinos a Soñar
The group emerged from the Farmworker Equity Express Bus
carrying bags filled with handmade tamales
Christmas gifts and groceries to give out to farmworkers
A priest and a musician played Christmas carols in Spanish
Hernandez-Arriaga donned a green Santa hat to match her green hoodie, which read, “Our veggies are Moon Raised.” The 53-year-old, with bright pink lipstick, imparted the cheerful vibe of the event, a welcome contrast to the history of this farm as the site of a mass shooting in January of 2023.
ALAS brought aid to workers at California Terra Garden for years before the shooting and has continued
Hernandez-Arriaga founded the organization in 2011 with the mantra “cultura cura,” which means “culture cures.”
Everything ALAS does — from distributing basic necessities
putting on events and offering immigration services
music classes for kids and adults and mental health counseling — is infused with Latinx culture to empower the community
Hernandez-Arriaga never imagined how vital the healing part of the group’s mission would be after a mass shooting, which thrust Half Moon Bay’s farmworker community into the national spotlight and exposed the decrepit living conditions hundreds of farmworkers are forced to live in
farmworkers in Half Moon Bay have contributed to the region’s economy with their labor but were largely left out of the broader community
“[Latinos] are present in the economic workforce
We’re present in the job industry,” she said
“Farmworkers here are putting food on the tables for our community
Mothers are caring for the children of the community here
We’re not present in the way of cultural citizenship
When traditions are really alive in the community and there are spaces to bring us together
that creates healing and that centers healing and pride and joy and visibility in a collective way.”
I met Hernandez-Arriaga in the fall of 2023 when I reported on a program ALAS created to bring accordion classes to farmworkers as a form of music therapy
The arts are often treated as just a “tradition or custom,” she said
but it really is what’s known in psychology as “cultural sensory intervention.”
“Cultura is our medicine,” she said
“This is not something that I’m developing or that we’re seeing as new.”
Hernandez-Arriaga’s background is in social work and counseling
She earned her master’s in social work at Our Lady of the Lake University before moving to the Bay Area nearly 25 years ago to work as a social worker for incarcerated youth in Santa Clara County
She has since earned a doctorate in education from the University of San Francisco
She moved to Half Moon Bay in 2002 with her husband and three daughters — one now 20-year-old college student and 18-year-old twins
She volunteered as a counselor for young people and began to notice a familiar condition — kids feeling embarrassed about their heritage and like outsiders in their community
similar to what she felt growing up in rural Texas
Both of her grandfathers were lifelong farmworkers
Her mother picked cotton and went to segregated schools
Even though she was an award-winning high school student
she felt that she had to be ashamed of her Mexican roots
“I felt the slow death of the loss of my culture
the loss of being proud of who I was,” she said
“I grew up with a lack of connection to cultura
“I realized after several years that this community of Half Moon Bay was
suffering the same experiences that I had growing up in Texas: a lot of racism
Hernandez-Arriaga’s comments made me think about what representation really means
BIPOC communities talk about wanting to feel seen
but true representation goes further than that
celebrated and respected as integral members of the community
Her response was to start a nonprofit that would address the needs of the community from food to cultural pride. ALAS’s operating budget grew to $5.3 million in 2024, up from $232,652 in 2018.
‘We need to change living conditions,’” she said
As it turned out, ALAS was already working on a housing development. The group partnered with Mercy Housing, a nonprofit developer, in 2022 to build senior housing on a city-owned lot in downtown Half Moon Bay. The project, known as 555 Kelly
calls for 40 apartments in a five-story building with a community center on the ground floor
Hernandez-Arriaga thought that the outpouring of outrage and concern over farmworker housing would translate into urgency for 555 Kelly
the project was delayed by community opposition
and it came to a really surprising halt when the planning commission and so many in our community said
We do not want farmworker housing — or we do want it
but not here in our downtown space where you’re proposing,’” she said
“Why are farm workers always hidden in the fields
Why can’t we have them downtown walking to their medical appointments
Criticism of the project included boilerplate opposition to development — the building is too tall and doesn’t have enough parking — but there was also significant pushback against the community center and communal kitchen on the ground floor
to create a sense of community for the building’s residents
Half Moon Bay’s planning commission and city council approved the project last June
It could break ground in 2026 and finally welcome residents in 2028
“We are not done,” Hernandez-Arriaga said
“ALAS is going to fight this through because our farmworker community deserves that and more.”
Staff Recommendation: Adopt a Resolution authorizing the City Manager to execute an Exclusive Negotiations Agreement (ENA) between the City and Mercy Housing California (Mercy) to provide twelve months to negotiate an Affordable Housing and Property Disposition Agreement (the AHPDA) and the terms of a ground lease for a senior affordable housing development (the Project) at 555 Kelly Avenue

their first state crown in first state appearance
It was also the school's first state championship in any sports
got superlative efforts from 5-10 senior Haylie Wang (17 points
nine rebounds) and sophomore guard Alyssa So (15 points)

"We play with a lot of heart and a lot of discipline."
Assistant and former assistnat principal Wayne Muramatsu gave an impassioned speech in the postseason press conference
known as "nerds" by the general population because of their academic excellence
He also credited with the excellent work of Jacobs

Jacobs was impressed with Half Moon Bay's skill and size
especially the work of Lemoge who collected 10 offensive rebounds

San Mateo County Planning Staff Report. Consideration of a request by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MROSD) that the County report upon whether its proposed purchase of 62.68 +/- acres of property (APN 066-430-100 and 066-430-110) conforms to the San Mateo County General Plan
Midpen recently approved the purchase of three properties near Half Moon Bay that will expand the existing Miramontes Ridge Open Space Preserve and provide a location for a ranger and maintenance staff office
The properties consist of a commercial property and undeveloped open space lands
“Midpen staff provide many valuable public services to the Coastside
and this site will enable our staff and equipment to be readily available and provide for greater connection and presence within the community,” said Midpen Superintendent Chris Barresi.
When Midpen’s boundaries expanded to include the San Mateo County coast in 2004
the public agency made a commitment to the community that a ranger and maintenance staff office would be established once Midpen preserved 15,000 acres in the area.
This acreage milestone was reached with the purchase of what is now Cloverdale Ranch Open Space Preserve near Pescadero in 2023
staff have been putting aside funds for this purpose.
Staff searched for a suitable site for several years before finding a 2.61-acre commercial property within Half Moon Bay city limits
The commercial property is currently leased out to private businesses for parking and storage
The property was a rare fit with all of Midpen’s narrow criteria including for size
utilities and absence of prime agriculture or farmland.
Two nearby undeveloped open space properties totaling 62.68 acres were also approved for purchase in the same transaction and from the same owner to be incorporated into Midpen’s adjacent Miramontes Ridge Preserve
These parcels already had an easement over them that prevented development
and their preservation aligns with the priorities in Midpen’s Vision Plan
funded by voter-approved Measure AA.
Improvements to the commercial property will need to occur before Midpen staff and equipment can begin operating out of it
These purchases are scheduled to close escrow this spring
Midpen has several existing ranger and maintenance staff offices located throughout our service area to serve Midpen preserves and visitors

2024 and offer walk-in and virtual appointments Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m
Dignity Health Medical Group – Sequoia (DHMG – Sequoia) is excited to announce the expansion of its Half Moon Bay primary care clinic to include urgent care services and extended hours of operation
this pilot program will run for six months and will provide essential pediatric and adult urgent care services to the community while gaining valuable insights into the health care needs of coastal residents.
With funding support from the County of San Mateo
the clinic will provide urgent care services to all community members
regardless of their health insurance plan or coverage
No patient will be turned away based on insurance coverage
Residents do not need to be Dignity Health patients to receive care.
“We are thrilled to offer these expanded services to our community,” said Marie President
“This pilot program will allow us to provide convenient and accessible in-person and virtual same-day services for common urgent medical issues
while also gathering data to better understand the health care needs of our coastal residents.”
“I am thankful that the County Board of Supervisors approved my request to fund this urgent care clinic pilot on the coast
especially in light of the recent closure of the only ER in the area
This marks a significant public health victory for our community
no patient will be denied care due to lack of insurance coverage.”
The pilot same-day clinic will offer walk-in appointments Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m
to 7:30 p.m. The clinic will treat a wide range of non-life-threatening medical issues
coastal residents should dial 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency department

the kid and I got to go visit my dear TME pal and foodie friend Emily and her fam
We have talked for years about getting together to eat all the yummy stuff in either of our lovely home cities
While we got a tiny taste of a Foodie Friends Vacay like this two summers ago when we met up with Em and her family in Bend
So a trip to gorgeous Half Moon Bay on the south side of the Bay Area came together
So hopefully these outfit ideas will be helpful if you’re planning a trip to either the Bay Area or somewhere temperate coming up (like the PNW in early fall
but I wasn’t prepared for how cool and eerie the thick layer of fog could be
It is such a phenomenally beautiful spot and the cutest town ever
so even though you might not get a ton of sunny hot days
If you’ve visited the Bay Area at all you know layers are key
especially on the coast or close to the city
Parts of the Bay are sunnier and warmer for sure
But cool cool cool is the little town of Half Moon Bay
So even though this gal currently runs pretty warm (and by warm I mean hot) I was so glad I had my denim shirt
This baby has been my go-to lately for a great topper
it isn’t too heavy and it’s easy to tie around my shoulders or waist when I don’t want it on
delicious matcha lattes and pastries at 11th Hour Coffee and then we were on to the famous Santa Cruz Boardwalk where we rode rides
This combo of bright + muted ice cream colors was so fun but still me and the layers were perfect as the day heated up
Pants (M) | Denim Shirt (M) | Tevas | Purse
Our next day started with a chill morning then shopping around the adorable town of Half Moon Bay
It’s so cute and easy to get around with plenty of little shops
We had kids in tow so we hit up the bookstore and the toy store obvs
Here I am again in my denim shirt that didn’t let me down lol
It felt updated to wear it with baggy cargos and I mixed in a fun printed tee for a pop of pattern
These cargos have been a favorite find this summer and I’ll definitely rock them well into fall
They have that comfy waistband I’ve talked about before that I love from Wit & Wisdom
Shirt (M) | Linen Set (M) | Similar Bag
One thing you can find plenty of when A) in the Bay Area and B) visiting Em is delicious food
And I’m picky being from Oregon near the Fruit Loop and all
This was our last day there and sunny and gorgeous
We hit up the farmer’s market after taking her tiny gal to soccer (which as you can imagine was adorable.)
we stopped by Sweet55 chocolate shop around the corner and omg…highly recommend
It’s a great place to grab gifts to take home
Similar Shirt | Jeans (more here) | Bag
Emily looked adorable this day with her sunny tote and denim-on-denim
so she let me include this pic for y’all
She is the most fabulous foodie host ever and while I didn’t take a ton of pics of our actual food it’s because I was too busy having fun and devouring it all
Sweatshirt (M) | Joggers (M)
I always and I mean, always, travel with my Vuori Performance joggers
I’m up for one night in Seattle right now and they’re in my little suitcase
They pack so small and are so comfy for either wearing to travel
having on hand for any active stuff I might get into or wearing to sleep in
The joggers were perfect at Em’s for vegging and sleeping
but I had to get at least one pic in her selfie spot
Set (M) | Purse | Shoes
This Dressed in Lala ribbed matching set (I also own it in black) is so incredibly comfy for travel
I love that it still shows off my vibe though and doesn’t just look like boring loungewear
I recently learned that my big buckle Birkenstocks like to set off the scanner at the airport
so I mostly wear my sneakers (ugh the time I had to take them off and walk barefooted through security blehhhhh)
I adore them so I usually have them in my carry-on in case I want to swap out if it gets warm
And there’s a reason this gal springs for TSA pre-check…don’t make me take my shoes off
This was the best little trip to celebrate the end of school for us and celebrate our friends
Thanks so much Stoffel family for showing us such a fun
Here’s a quick rundown of what and where we ate
you can see why in addition to the lovely company and fun activities…we had a good time
Pants (M) | Denim Shirt (M) | Birks | Purse
My denim shirt and I cannot wait to visit again
