NASCAR star Denny Hamlin believes two-time Cup Series rival Kyle Busch is still as good as he was 10 years ago
It certainly was a surprise, even if Childers’ No. 7 team, which featured Justin Haley as the driver, wasn’t getting the results they expected. Hamlin reacted to the news on the latest episode of his Actions Detrimental podcast
“When it came to the Next Gen, obviously the results weren’t there as much, but there’s just so many other factors that go into it. You know, you’re with Stewart-Haas when they’re beginning to close. How much effort are they putting in? Obviously, your pit crew matters. Everything matters. So, it’s hard to really speculate that, you know, it’s just a him and a car combination problem that doesn’t seem to work, but it’s certainly — the results haven’t been there over the last couple years.

What’s next for Rodney Childers remains to be seen. Still, he’ll have Denny Hamlin’s attention, as the crew chief commands that at least due to his resume. Whether he gets back on top of the pit box or not, and where it takes place, will be an interesting storyline to follow throughout the next couple of months, for sure.

Texas has discontinued the AMBER Alert for Skylar Beach after the 10-year-old girl was found alive Thursday morning
The man she was with has been charged with kidnapping
Earlier Thursday morning, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued a statewide AMBER Alert for Skylar, who had last been seen around 4 p.m. Wednesday in Hamlin, about 46 miles northwest of Abilene. She was found around 11:30 a.m. on May 1, Hamlin Police Chief Jay Strong told USA TODAY during a phone call.
"It has been a long 40 hours, but this is like winning the World Series," Strong said. "She is safe. She is healthy. She's being checked out by medical, and we're just striving to get her reunited with her family."
Strong said Skylar was with a family friend who is not related to her. Terry Jeter, 43, left with the girl on April 30 and was supposed to return home around 8 p.m., but did not. Her parents called police a few hours later. Authorities issued an AMBER Alert around 6 a.m. on May 1, and by 11:30 a.m., she was found safe, Strong said.
Jeter has been charged with kidnapping, the police chief confirmed.
Finding the girl was a joint effort made up of more than 5 agencies, including the Jones County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety, Strong said.
At the time the alert was issued, Jeter was believed to be driving a 2002 black Suzuki Intruder motorcycle with Texas license plate 138A4V.

Although NASCAR isn’t quite the same as other motorsports like Formula 1—where fitness is as important as driving skill—drivers in stock cars aren’t off the hook when it comes to staying in shape
Especially when they’re in their 40s and still competing at the top level
Several Cup Series veterans have managed to outperform younger drivers well into their 40s
has officially joined that club after recently celebrating his 40th birthday
Busch’s longtime contemporary Denny Hamlin had some advice for him about staying sharp on the track
With his winning ways and edgy personality
it’s hard to believe Hamlin is currently the oldest full-time driver in NASCAR
While many drivers begin to slow down with age
Hamlin seems to be heading in the opposite direction
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has aged like fine wine and continues to capitalize on his experience
Hamlin has scored nine Cup Series wins and has dominated short tracks more than any other current driver
Hamlin now ranks in the top 10 on NASCAR’s all-time Cup Series win list
He also holds the unique distinction of being the only driver on that list without a championship title
When Busch hit 40, fans and analysts saw it as the beginning of a new chapter for the two-time Cup Series champ. But Busch himself didn’t feel any different, saying 40 was “just a number” and that he still felt like he was in his early 30s
who continues to compete at a high level at age 44
so that’s admirable and something that I wanna do.”
In a recent interview, motorsports reporter Bob Pockrass asked Hamlin if he had any advice for drivers in their 40s
it is just taking care of your body more.”
11 driver explained that while every driver is built differently and wears down at a different pace
he personally noticed changes starting at 42
to make it where I had to do tons of maintenance,” he said
Hamlin believes Busch is still on the right track when it comes to fitness
also noted that Busch’s move to RCR may be playing a role in his recent ups and downs
“Sometimes you get to a car that doesn’t necessarily like your style and you have to adapt,” Hamlin said
Denny Hamlin threw the horns down gesture after he was booed by fans at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday. According to Jeff Gluck of The Athletic
Hamlin received the loudest reception of the NASCAR drivers who were introduced ahead of the Cup Series race
Denny Hamlin was not the only driver to throw the horns down gesture on Sunday. Before the race, Riley Herbst said
“I walked out on stage and threw the horns down
Denny doesn’t have a lot of fans in Texas apparently pic.twitter.com/HAqaFbar0c
It’s not surprising to see fans giving it to Hamlin as he’s become a driver fans love to hate. In an interview with Motorpsorts.com in 2023, the three-time Daytona 500 winner talked about being NASCAR’s most hated driver.
“I thought I was really just sort of a middle-of-the-road guy when it came to who fans liked or disliked,” Hamlin said. “You had like Joey Logano and the really popular drivers back in the day – Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. – but as they retired, right, people wanted to root against someone.
“So, for a while it was Joey. But he hasn’t really had track stuff that’s really fueled it of late and I think I probably have. I’m just kind of the heel of right now.”

The horns down gesture is something seen in college football when fans use it against the Texas Longhorns. During the 2024 season, Hamlin became a big fan of Ohio State
the team that beat Texas in the College Football Playoff semifinals in January
I’ll be honest with you when you jump on the bandwagon with the best team, it surely makes it easy and fun,” Hamlin said on the Actions Detrimental podcast earlier this year. “Just to me, the atmosphere was the biggest thing I noticed being so different.
“If I go to an NFL game, it’s a [Carolina] Panthers game and I’m not a Panthers fan by any means, Charlotte fans are suspect at best when it comes to their fandom. It’s like going to a library compared to going to when I went to The Shoe, and it is unbelievable. The crowd was so freaking loud at every play.”
Flames shot out from underneath Hamlin’s car after he tried to recycle his car’s engines after losing power
but he wasn’t injured in the crash and could be heard joking on his radio after the incident
which was the Würth 400’s second caution of the day
Few drivers have had more success than Hamlin at Texas Motor Speedway
with the Florida native tied for second in all-time wins at the venue
Coming into the day, Hamlin had been having one of the best seasons of any driver to date, ranking in third place in NASCAR Cup Series standings, trailing only William Byron and Kyle Larson
NASCAR officials were kept especially busy during Sunday's Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway
with a total of 43 in-race infractions confirmed

The project included the complete replacement of the Hamlin Street Bridge over the Acushnet River and a nearby culvert
The purpose of the project was to “increase the load capacity of the existing crossing

In a war of words playing out across podcasts, NASCAR has hit back at Denny Hamlin and his claims about the proposal to let teams run cars outside the scope of the rule book at the All-Star Race
With the hope of it yielding new ways to improve the short track package
the sanctioning body was going to let teams build cars out of Next Gen parts that would essentially be illegal at any other race during the year
Denny Hamlin, who co-owns 23XI Racing
pointed at the added cost as the primary reason for being against it
Hamlin claimed it could cost up to $2 million dollars and with the winner of the annual exhibition race earning $1 million
NASCAR has countered these and other statements
the managing director of racing communications for the sport
explained that the offer was put to competition directors on March 12th of this year
and that there were also prior meetings to discuss it
the teams raised concerns and it never went forward
"Denny talked about how this would cost -- potentially -- $2 million dollars
if we went ahead and did this," said Forde
"I think his math was off by about $2 million dollars
is zero dollars or potentially save team's money."
almost $2 million dollars just for this race that 'only' pays $1 million dollars to the winner
What we presented to the teams is that you cannot modify any parts
but there was a list of things that we were going to allow teams to do."
posting: "Oh it cost us nothing to run a race team now
Forde later explained how teams could have saved money in the end
If you didn't want to come up with any ideas and just build your car
what you could have done was just use body panels that probably aren't race ready for Talladega or a Coke 600 but probably too good for a show car and use that for an All-Star Race
So you could have used hand-me-downs." He conceded that teams likely wouldn't do that
There were also more details revealed around what teams would have been able to do with the cars
One of the offers was unenforced damper lengths so teams could mess with the ride heights. Total and right-side weight would be enforced
Teams would have ben able to mix and match the available spoiler types
Forde also said the teams could use whatever diffuser they wanted (either the intermediate or short track version) and some other underbody changes
Teams would not be able to manipulate the chassis
Forde reiterated that it needed to be "an existing single source part."
The NASCAR podcast also touched on why Hamlin tends to become a constant topic on the show
"This is the second week in a row where -- and I would say this to his face -- where he claimed there wasn't that much thought put into this," said Forde "I can tell you that is absolutely not true
There was a working group working on these ideas for months
There was a lot of thought put into this."

First pit stops of the day today at Texas, and Denny Hamlin is having issues. His team’s code word, “Cowboys,” did not go over well. Instead of completing a clean pit stop, Hamlin sped on pit road and then didn’t even make a pit stop on his first trip down NASCAR pit road
Denny Hamlin went down pit road twice and got a speeding penalty
That meant a trip to the very back for Hamlin and his team
and now they are stuck in a tough position on the track
He says the botched stop was due to too many people talking on the radio at the same time
“You can’t call a team that’s the same f***ing name as another …. Never mind,” Hamlin said on the radio, via Steven Taranto of CBS Sports.
“You boys were talking over each other, and I heard ‘Cowboys,’ and obviously I looked at my card.”
Just a terrible miscommunication. I guess you could say at least it is early in the race. There is a lot of time for the 11 team to mess around with strategy and get back to the front. No doubt, his job has gotten a lot harder than it needed to be.
Again, a lot of time is left. The main issue is that passing at Texas is so difficult. Dirty air will be the talk of the day yet again. However, we have seen the groove widen out and that will only help these cars with passing. Let’s hope it opens up enough.
The plan moving forward is to either get ahead on pit road or find a way to get this car set up to run on the outside. Early in this race, we have seen Tyler Reddick take the outside lane and use it to his advantage. He is running higher than anyone else.
So, Hamlin has to make big moves on pit road, under caution, or get this car running high. That is going to be easier said than done. It appears that out of 38 cars on the track, Reddick is the only one able to move up high in Stage 1.
It looks like Hamlin will be able to get to the top-20 before the end of Stage 1. At least, he will be right there on the edge. It is hard to say when he will stop passing so easily and get into rougher traffic.
Denny Hamlin made an early mistake and got a penalty. He will try to be perfect for the rest of the evening. Can he bounce back from this?
Denny Hamlin had a short day at Texas Motor Speedway as the engine of his No. 11 car caught on fire during Stage 1 of the NASCAR Cup Series race
Hamlin spoke to reporters about what caused the fire
“Just the lap before, it started misting,” Denny Hamlin said, per Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports
And when asked if he received any warning about the fire
Hamlin was penalized for speeding on pit road
He went down pit road twice because too many people talking on the radio at the same time and he heard the “Cowboys” code name
“You can’t call a team that’s the same f***ing name as another …. Never mind,” Hamlin said on the radio. “You boys were talking over each other, and I heard ‘Cowboys,’ and obviously I looked at my card.”
Hamlin also explained to reporters what happened with the “Cowboys” code word mishap. He said it was “Miscommunication between me and the team. They gave me a code, and it was too close to another code just got mixed up there.”
It’s a tough break for Hamlin who was looking to bounce back after a P21 finish at Talladega last week. However, the 44-year-old has performed well in the first half of the regular season, as he’s won two races in finished in the top 10 in six races.

Denny Hamlin watched as Joey Logano and Ryan Preece both drove their way to top five finishes at Talladega Superspeedway this past weekend. Then, the Ford tandem was disqualified by NASCAR
Officials found Logano’s No. 22 to be in violation of Section 14.5.8.E, which covers spoiler braces that are used as superspeedway events. He was also in violation of Section 14.1.P under General Vehicle Assembly, which states, “All fasteners must be securely fastened at all times during an Event,” per NASCAR
As for Preece, “The infraction stemmed from an unintentional adjustment during pre-race inspection to correct a spoiler angle issue. While the change did not provide a competitive advantage, it did not meet the approved compliance method,” RFK Racing revealed
Teams are always looking for an advantage at superspeedways, and Logano and Preece thought they found one, but it ended up costing them in the end. On the latest episode of his Actions Detrimental podcast
Hamlin reacted to the punishment that was dished out by NASCAR in Alabama
All told, the disqualifications were a big blow to Preece and Logano, as they both finished in the top five at Talladega. Preece finished second behind the confirmed winner in Cindric, and Logano finished fifth. With the disqualifications, Preece and Logano earned 38th and 39th finishes on Sunday, respectively.
Moving forward, Ryan Preece and Joey Logano will be hoping to bounce back in a big way, while Denny Hamlin will be looking to continue his strong 2025. We’ll see if any of them can get the job done at Texas this coming weekend.

Denny Hamlin wants NASCAR to step in after Ross Chastain made a controversial block during the NASCAR Cup Series Talladega race this past weekend. On the Actions Detrimental podcast
Hamlin called for NASCAR enforcement after Chastain’s block
“I’m a little frustrated by it because I’ve seen it getting a little bit out of control and I would like to see something said about the unsafe merging that the drivers are doing intentionally to block oncoming cars that are approaching him,” Hamlin said
I’m just going to swerve back and forth until somebody checks up or gets crashed.'”
Denny Hamlin also suggested that a black flag should have come out after the Chastain block
“I don’t know why in NASCAR if you can have someone black flagged for forcing you below the yellow line to stop them from passing you
why can’t we stop the guy that is swerving at 150 miles per hour when the pack is coming at 190
who’s trying to cause a wreck?” Denny Hamlin asked
“He’s trying to get you to check up and then cause chaos
Hamlin and the Toyota cars were planning to make a run around the rest of the field before Chastain made his block. It turned out to be a good move as the end of the race set up a Ford vs. Chevrolet finish.
“I didn’t know how far up we were actually going to be able to get, but certainly the 1 [Ross Chastain], you know, making a move there to kinda wreck us is not ideal, but I mean, he’s trying to do everything he can to stop the run,” Hamlin told Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports after the race. “The variance of speed there was crazy.”
Hamlin did not have a great performance at Talladega as he earned a P21 finish. It comes after Hamlin finished in the top five in the last four races. Ross Chastain notched a P20 finish at Talladega. He earned top-10 finishes in the previous three races.

NASCAR managing director of racing communications Mike Forde has dismissed 23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin's recent claims that the proposed "Run What Ya Brung" All-Star Race would have left the teams making a financial loss
During an appearance on the Hauler Talk podcast
"Denny talked about how this would cost potentially $2 million if we went ahead and did this
I think his math was off by about $2 million," Forde joked
"But what actually it could cost is $0 or potentially save teams money
'You can listen to NASCAR's hottest new podcast on Wednesday for all of the goods.'"
"What we presented to the teams is that you cannot modify any parts
But there was a list of things we were going to allow teams to do."
and why I say teams actually probably could have saved money on this idea is if you didn't want to do anything
if you wanted to not come up with any idea
what you could have done is used body panels that probably aren't race-ready for a Talladega or a Coke 600
and use it for the All-Star Race," Forde said
you could have used sort of like hand-me-downs
but if it's hand-me-downs that are not up-to-snuff for a points race
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver took the opportunity to clarify his stance on the proposed All-Star "Run What Ya Brung" feature on his Actions Detrimental podcast. He explained, as previously reported by Newsweek Sports:
"I know Jeff Gluck had a massive rant last night on 'The Teardown' about the teams talking about the money
"Everyone wants to have fun and do all these things
We are gonna destroy three cars to build this car
it was like you have to use Next Gen parts
we're going to destroy every piece and part of that car and make it lighter or something
Going to bend the chassis and do all types of things to this thing that will make it illegal at any other racetrack that we go to?"
"We've been very transparent in the fact that this car cost $300,000
If I put my three cars on the racetrack and just to build this wild
I'm going to destroy it and now I lose one more car out of my fleet
that's three cars that are wiped out of my fleet that I'm not going to get a replacement for because I'm not going to get a replacement car if the car has damage to it if you wreck it
bent or whatever and you need another chassis
I can't afford to lose that out of my rotation
The whole cost-cutting thing was to shorten up how many cars we have in our stable
but I'm gonna spend $1 million just on parts and pieces
just in parts and pieces to replace all this sh*t we're gonna modify
I don't see this as even remotely breakeven proposition."
"For those like Jeff Gluck that complain about
all you talk about is money.' It's because the teams don't have enough money
"If you continue to lose money year after year
why would you just raise your hand and say
I'll take another $1 million loss.' You can't do that
It's not possible under the parameters set in front of us and that was that do whatever you want."
