If you've ever grabbed food at a fast food restaurant at lunchtime
and a dozen or so cars lined up in the drive-thru
That's exactly what happened early last year at a popular fast food restaurant in Atlantic County when in January 2024, Wendy's on the White Horse Pike in Hammonton abruptly closed
That Wendy's was a bit of a local landmark
While I was not able to find out exactly when it opened
the earliest Google Maps picture of the area from 2008 shows it alive and well
and this Wendy's did face some stiff competition
and the Silver Coin Diner are all practically next to each other
And just because you have a good product — in this case
and chicken nuggets — that doesn't guarantee success
it appears this particular Wendy's lost its lease and
We recently decided to take a look inside to see what a closed fast food restaurant looks like
and everything else -- but it still looks and feels like a Wendy's
But now it's just sad and a little creepy
Please note: This building has NOT been abandoned
All of these pictures were taken from the outside looking in

1/40Softball: Haddon Township vs. Donovan Catholic the Hammonton Invitational Tournament, May 3, 2025.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Bill Evans | NJ Advance Media for NJ.comThe sun was shining and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky
1 Donovan Catholic and Haddon Township softball teams to their dugouts in the championship game of the 42nd Hammonton Invitational Saturday
The delay was all that could slow the Griffins on Saturday as they pounded out 44 runs in three games and captured the tournament title for the second time in three years
Donovan Catholic (18-0) captured the championship game
Right after the 30-minute delay with Donovan Catholic leading 8-1
Christina Ginex came to the plate and launched a two-run homer
and Caroline Kopp contributed an RBI double to push the lead to 13-2 before the inning ended
concentrating on our mechanics and we came out strong
the junior designated player who started the day with nine RBI and ended it with 21
She knocked in six runs in an opening 17-0 win over Rancocas Vally
added two in the 13-3 semifinal victory against Gloucester and was 4-for-4 with four RBI in the championship game
our whole team has such a good lineup and we’re all powerful together and having them behind me helped me get there,” said Kopp
Bella Maria went 4-for-4 with a home run in the final
Cino launched two home runs on Saturday including an opposite-field bomb in the final
Isabella Cino (6) high fives Madison Kelliher (9) of Donovan Catholic after crossing home against Haddon Township during the Hammonton Invitational Softball Tournament at Hammonton High School in Hammonton
The Griffins are averaging 11.8 runs per game
putting them statistically on par with their great championship era team that culminated with a Non-Public A state title in 2019
they’re driven and when they get the opportunity to get to the plate
many of them are delivering,” said Donovan Catholic coach Debbie Schwartz
it was a good day for the Group 1 Hawks (11-5)
who edged Group 3 contender Northern Burlington
in the opening round while Julie Broderick’s second home run of the game in the seventh inning propelled them past solid Group 4 squad Southern
Jamie Kozarski (22) of Haddon Township hits the ball against Donovan Catholic during the Hammonton Invitational Softball Tournament at Hammonton High School in Hammonton
took a toll on the small-school squad and Siena-bound All-State pitcher Jordan Strauss - who threw all 14 innings in the first two games - did not pitch in the final
The Hawks did threaten throughout the game and pushed two runs across but left nine on through five innings
“Three games in one day is hard for any team
they put their bats on the ball,” said Schwartz
I watched her against Southern and she has a good out pitch
but they have 11 players and I know they have to watch
so I didn’t mind playing three games in one day
celebrated and knew we had a big day and came very focused.”

Hammonton High School will save money on monograms
the Hammonton Board of Education approved the hiring of Pat Lancetta as its head football coach
Lancetta can reach into his closet for gear from his days as an assistant coach from 1989-to-2002 at the school under former Blue Devils' coach Pete Lancetta
Augustine after winning 215 games and four South Jersey championships at Hammonton from 1989 to 2014
"Back then it was either Coach Pete or Coach Pat," Lancetta said
because now the kids do call me coach Lancetta
Pat coached one year at Absegami before hiring on at Rowan University in 2004
including both offensive and defensive coordinator for the Profs
Pat Lancetta returned to Hammonton as a health and physical education teacher this school year
Lancetta is looking forward to a different kind of challenge
we were getting a kid after four years of high school," Lancetta said
you're starting them in their freshman year
they have a lot of lot of distractions in their life
The biggest thing is to get them to focus for a few hours a day and get them off that."
The Blue Devils finished 1-9 this fall under coach Jim Raso
with Pat Lancetta serving as offensive coordinator
which includes three trips to sectional finals
Lancetta will nonetheless be a head coach for the first time
He'll also be on campus throughout the school year
heaven forbid something happens during school or a teacher needs to come see me," Lancetta said
We can talk about anything from basketball to hunting to golf
I want them comfortable enough to just come up and let's have a conversation."
Lancetta is not just focusing on his players
He's curating a varied and talented coaching staff
Without sounding like an old man shooing the kids off his lawn
Lancetta is embracing an old-school mentoring approach
"Our staff is going to be a mix," Lancetta said
We've gotten younger with the assistant coaches
kind of guide the younger coaches so they can become head coaches someday
guys don't have to go through what we had to back in the day

Hammonton pitcher Gracie Ravenkamp struck out seven in a complete-game shutout of Middle Township
Hammonton’s Leah Alexander makes her way home for a run in the sixth inning Wednesday against Middle Township
HAMMONTON — Lyla Cassidy needed to take some deep breaths during the game Wednesday to erase her nerves
The freshman had been performing very well recently with the junior varsity team
so Hammonton High School softball coach Eric Shulman gave her the opportunity to make her varsity debut
drove in three runs and scored one to lead Hammonton to a 9-0 victory over Middle Township in a Cape-Atlantic League National Division game
Gracie Ravenkamp pitched a complete shutout
She struck out seven and gave up just five hits
“I’ll definitely remember this,” the 14-year-old said of her debut
Kamryn Barker and Vivianne Wilson singled to start the second inning
Cassidy singled them both home to give the Blue Devils (9-2) a 3-0 lead
Lauren Potter doubled to start the fourth inning
and Cassidy tripled her home to extend the lead to 4-0
Leah Alexander singled in Cassidy to make it 5-0
“One of things we talk about as a group (of coaches) is we evaluate everybody every day at practices and in games,” said Shulman
adding that he received many texts saying Cassidy was “tattooing the ball and hitting the ball hard.”
Shulman wanted to see what Cassidy could do Wednesday
she earned the right to stay (on the varsity team)
Obviously as the season moves forward and you see different pitching
Leah Alexander reached on an error to start the first inning
and Ravenkamp doubled her in to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead
Ravenkamp also hit an RBI single and scored in the fourth inning
Hammonton scored four runs in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead
and I feel that definitely helps with confidence
I feel like coming off the mound strong and basing that off the rest of the first inning
All nine starters contributed in the win for Hammonton
Alexis Vellucci doubled and drove in a run
Layla Cuneo-Snouffer walked and scored in the sixth inning
Victoria Atwood went 2 for 3 for Middle (5-5)
Katie Creamer and Megan Turner each singled
Dakota Laughlin struck out two and gave up two hits in four innings
Creamer gave up nine hits and struck out three in three innings
“One of the things we are big on is everyone has a job to do,” Shulman said
“It’s nice to see when everyone is contributing in some way
The Blue Devils lost to the Braves 4-3 on April 2
and the programs will meet again May 8 in Galloway Township
“You want to win every game,” Shulman said
“We broke it down that first week against Mainland (Regional) and Cedar Creek
Then we broke it down into the first section of division games
now we are starting that second section of division games
so every win in the division is important.”
Hammonton next plays in the two-day Rancocas Valley Tournament
The Blue Devils will open the tournament against Rancocas Valley at 10 a.m
they are hitting the tar out of the ball,” Shulman said of Rancocas Valley
I like to think we are playing well defensively
so hopefully we give ourselves a chance offensively
but it’s more ‘Are we playing better?’ We want to be playing our best in May when the playoffs start.”
Hammonton defeated Rancocas Valley 15-11 last spring
“I feel like that is going to be good for us,” Ravenkamp said of the matchup
We are a totally different team than last year

Somebody thought it would be a good idea - in the snow - to take a spin through a local cemetery
The cemetery has posted photos of the vehicle's tracks on its Facebook page
(This is the first cemetery I've ever seen with its own Facebook page!)
someone decided the cemetery would be a part of their bad driving experience
According to its Facebook page
the cemetery is the oldest active cemetery in Hammonton
Here's a look back at a dedication ceremony that took place at Oak Grove.

“I am just trying to stay with that same chill approach
I gotta stay relaxed in the box and do what I do.”
sitting Bagnell for a game or dropping him down in the lineup never crossed Hammonton first-year coach Frank LaSasso’s mind

Bagnell wanted to remain batting second in the order so as to not disturb anyone else because the rest of the team was hitting
“That right there told me about his character,” he said
“He knew that he would be OK and that he cared about his teammates
We were just looking for a way to get him going
Seven hits in the last two games says it all about him.”

and will play Vineland (5-4) twice next week
“I am happy we did this before our spring break,” Bagnell said
“We have three games next week and no school
Hammonton is currently riding a three-game win streak and hopes that momentum continues
“We have a lot of momentum and confidence right now
believing that we belong in our division,” LaSasso said
“Our division is brutal week in and week out playing those back-to-back games
The team is really jelling and coming together.”

The former Vinyl Brewery at 300 12th St in Hammonton closed its doors on Sept 29
Vinyl was part of a vibrant craft beer scene in Hammonton
that also features Three 3's and Chimney Rustic Ales as breweries in the town
The new brewery, replacing Vinyl, will be a place called Snouts and Stouts, which appears to be a dog-friendly brewery that has a T-shirt that promotes "Drink Beer, Pet Dogs"
which appears to have taken over Vinyl's account
announced that there would be "merch dropping soon"
While their social media post did not give a specific opening date
food is not allowed to be served at local breweries
but one thing that was also unique about going to Vinyl was the food options in the area that were within walking distance
Bruni's Pizza is right across the street
so you can order a pizza and bring it over to the brewery
Next door to the brewery is La Carreta Taqueria
and West End Grill is less than a block away
I have been to Vinyl a few times and look forward to checking out Snouts and Stouts
as I get more information on an opening date
Uncover the latest buzz in Hammonton's craft beer scene with the closure of Vinyl Brewery and the rise of Snouts and Stouts

GALLOWAY — The scouting report for Reese Downey doesn't include the one thing she doesn't excel in
There isn't a single thing that Absegami senior doesn't do well on the court
Downey manages to turn a minus into a plus
Ask Downey to talk about her own accomplishments and she'll cross you over
"I am definitely happy that I was able to do all this
I wouldn't be able to do without my team," Downey said
"I really have to say they really helped me out
I don't think I could have done it without any of them."
Downey scored 22 points in a 49-41 win over Hammonton in a South Jersey Group 3 quarterfinal
will travel to 2-seed Moorestown for a Tuesday semifinal playoff game
The fourth-seeded Braves will face top seed Ocean City in their Tuesday semifinal
Barring an upset on the other side girls bracket
the quarterfinal win was the final home game of Downey's career
With 2,077 career points and 317 career 3-pointers
Downey has set the standard for Absegami basketball — girls or boys — to a level that very few schools can match
four 3-pointer effort in her freshman debut against Vineland
"Reese is the most amazing teammate you could have," senior Lily Ortiz said
You'll never find her talking about herself
All she wants to talk about is her teammates
Downey put any thought that it could be her last home game aside
"All I was thinking about was really just like my last game with my teammates
Ortiz doesn't have the same stratospheric numbers Downey has put up
The Ortiz name won't join Downey's on the school's 1,000-point club
There won't be a basketball in the trophy case like Downey has for scoring 1,000 and 2,000 career points
You wouldn't know any of that listening to Downey
"I think she's really shown that she really wants our team to be here
We want to stay (in the playoffs) as long as we can
I always trust her when we're playing together
Before Downey graduates and begins her collegiate career at Farleigh Dickinson
she's focusing more on her teammates than herself
"I like doing this because I'm really close with all the girls," Downey said
"I really think my past teammates — all the seniors who like helped me when I was a freshman — have really given me a good example of how to help them and be a leader."

A Hammonton police officer faces multiple charges in connection with the alleged theft of drugs from an evidence room
was investigated after failing a drug test earlier this year
according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office
He was found to have allegedly “tampered with and taken narcotics items of evidence
including methamphetamine and oxycodone," the prosecutor's office said in a statement
A probable cause statement alleges Zbikowski “abused his position as custodian of evidence" by removing "logged and secured" drugs between August 2023 and February 2024
An affidavit filed with the statement indicated the investigation included surveillance and the execution of a search warrant
has been a police officer for almost 21 years
He had an annual salary of $101,248 in 2021
the latest figure available from the records
declined to comment Monday on Zbikowski's employment status
Charges against the Hammonton man include official misconduct
He's also accused of tampering with evidence because the disappearance of drug evidence impeded prosecution of those cases
Zbikowski has not been convicted in the case
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the major crime unit of the prosecutor’s office at 609-909-7666
Anonymous tips can be left at acpo.tips on the prosecutor’s website

Local Hammonton Brewery Vinyl has announced that they are under new ownership
located at 300 12th St in Hammonton announced they would be closing on Sept 29 to renovate and rebrand the brewery
Here is the announcement from one of the owners
who was one of the owners along with Tom Puentes and Jim Sacco
"It is with heavy hearts that myself Tom and Jim have decided to step away from Vinyl Brewing," Puentes said on social media
They have announced that they will be open on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting at 5 pm to give their patrons some extra chances to try out the brews for one last time before the rebranding
What started off as serving patrons some of Jimmy’s home brew recipes turned into the most amazing environment with the most amazing costumers for the past 7 years
Vinyl Brewing was a place where relationships were built and friends became family
The brewery also announced on social media that T-shirts are still available and the price has been discounted
It will be interesting to see what the rebranding looks like
I have been to Vinyl a few times and always liked the vibe and beers here
They have a good setup and are situated in a good spot in Hammonton with Bruni's Pizza and some other food options near the brewery
it allowed you to walk and grab a pizza and bring it to the brewery
The beer that I tried when I was at Vinyl was My Brain Hurts
an American IPA that has a very solid 3.86 rating out of five on the beer app Untapped
I really like this place and enjoy all three of the Hammonton Breweries
which also include; Three 3's and Chimney Rustic Ales
the new owners can not only keep this place going strong but continue to improve it

Jake Karp and Jalen Bell of the Egg Harbor Township boys basketball team. For NJ Advance Media
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Matt Cosentino | For NJ Advance MediaJake Karp did not leave the gym at Hammonton High School with a career high in points on Wednesday night
But with the Egg Harbor Township boys basketball team coming off three straight frustrating losses
the only thing that mattered to Karp was getting back on the bus with a W
The senior guard scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the first half as the visiting Eagles built a commanding 38-15 lead on their way to a 70-36 win in Cape-Atlantic League National Division action
avenging a one-point loss to the Blue Devils from earlier this season
Egg Harbor snapped its losing streak and improved to 10-7 overall
the first time we played Hammonton we lost by one and that really killed us,” Karp said
“That’s what we were really thinking about coming into this game
We wanted to come out with high intensity and blow them out as much as we could.”
as he knocked down his first four shots and never slowed down
He ended up connecting on 11-of-17 attempts from the floor
Karp’s point total was just one shy of his career high
“I just tried to come in with a little more confidence than I had last game,” he said
and the shots started falling so I kept shooting
I was definitely trying to get up there and push my limits as far as I could go
I wanted to get as many points and assists as I could to help the team win.”
Egg Harbor’s slide included a loss to Atlantic City in which it coughed up an 11-point lead at home; a heartbreaking one-point defeat to Ewing at the buzzer; and a seven-point loss to Lower Cape May on Monday in which it scored a season-low 38 points
The Eagles had that total by halftime on Wednesday
“Lucky for us we still have a ton of time (left in the season),” EHT coach Cameron Bell said
“We were focused tonight and we needed this
This was a get-back game — the last time we played them at home
we hadn’t played in two weeks and we looked like we hadn’t played in two weeks
So this was a good one: They understood very well what the assignment was tonight.”
we had to work on the mental side of the game and lock back in as a team,” Jalen Bell said
“We haven’t been scoring but we finally got back in a rhythm tonight.”
Bell and Karp were dangerous off the dribble all night long
as they got into the lane to create opportunities for themselves and their teammates
Karp added a team-high six assists to go with his hot shooting
“Me and Jalen have matured together,” he said
“Nobody has really been able to stop us from getting to the basket,” Bell added
we can always kick out to one of our shooters.”
That formula should serve Egg Harbor well heading down the stretch of the season
and he expects his team to be a tough out in the postseason
“I think the CAL (Tournament) is wide open and I think South Jersey
“I know you have Central that’s really good
Cherry Hill East is really good and Kingsway is looking phenomenal
but I think we just have to keep getting better every day
… I’ll take our chances against almost anybody.”
