Repair work continues on the utility pole in Hampton Bays on Tuesday
An East Hampton Town police officer was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after Southampton Town police said he crashed into a utility pole early Tuesday morning in Hampton Bays
said: "Officer Morales has been immediately placed on administrative leave pending a full internal affairs investigation of the incident."
Southampton police said the crash occurred at 2:04 a.m
The incident resulted in some minor power outages in the area — though the PSEG Long Island outage map showed repairs had been made and power in the area was restored
Morales was "found to be intoxicated by alcohol" at the scene
and he was transported to a hospital for treatment of what was described only as "non-life-threatening injuries."
Arraignment information was not immediately available
It was not immediately clear if Morales is represented by counsel

A proposal to build a 68-room hotel on the former site of the iconic Boardy Barn in Hampton Bays has been met with initial support from local residents
Robert Salvatico, whose family operates the Indigo Hotel and the Holiday Inn & Suites in Riverhead, presented the concept at a recent Hampton Bays Civic Association meeting, 27east reported
The envisioned “Hamptons-style” hotel would be a 3-star establishment featuring a restaurant and bar accessible to guests and the public
along with potential pool amenities and up to 30 employment opportunities
that the proposal is in its conceptual stages and will be refined based on community feedback
Greater Long Island has reached out to Salvatico for further details regarding the proposed development
a preliminary show of hands indicated that a majority of the over 100 attendees were in favor of the project
The positive reception surprised the developers
who had only presented a basic conceptual plan and a simple artist’s rendering at that point
was a renowned summer destination in the Hamptons
and later on in its five-decade existence signature smiley face stickers
Operating exclusively on Sundays from mid-May to Labor Day
the venue attracted approximately thousands of partiers each week
Much to the chagrin of its loyal customer base
the party palace permanently closed in 2021
This is an ongoing story; please check back with Greater Long Island for updates

Richard John Forrestal passed peacefully in his sleep from this world to the next on Easter Sunday
Born in rural Ireland in 1924 on the family farm in Tullamore
He became a master mechanic through the old-school apprentice system of seven years
Wanting more from life than his situation could afford him
he worked and saved until he finally had enough money for passage aboard the Mauretania
which he dubbed “a lucky ship” in a letter home to his parents
written on the ship’s letterhead before sailing
He landed in New York City with $27 in his pocket
and half of it was gone after taking a taxi from the port to the Bronx
It changed in the telling depending on the audience in proper Seanchaí tradition
He had arranged housing with “Old Lady Riley,” who owned an apartment building in The Bronx with 12 units
One of those apartments was rented to the McCulloughs: Mac

Dad would say that the best and toughest thing he ever did was summon the courage to ask Mac McCullough
he began working for the famed car maker Austin-Healey
traveling the country in their flagship car and teaching others how to repair them
proved unacceptable for him as a family man
so he joined the New York Air National Guard at Floyd Bennett Field in NYC
He later migrated with the unit to Westhampton Beach

(Last trip: Ireland.) He quietly helped many people who needed—but couldn’t afford—repairs on anything with an engine
You could get lost for an hour or an evening in his tales of ramshackle home built motorcycles
or the sly shenanigans of “Igor Chumley,” his military alter ego

Sergeant Chumley also never failed to confound officers and supervisors alike
The twinkle in his eye—no matter how often he told the tales—never faded
His love of Ireland and all things Irish was evergreen
And his Sunday breakfasts were internationally loved
and we should always try to give a little more back”—and that he did
It is not an exaggeration to say he stepped off the Mauretania as a man alone
believing only that he could be more than what his circumstances initially offered
but I don’t think he’d want us to look on his passing as a tragedy in the least
He did everything he wanted to in this life
and with the family who went on before him
we know he’ll greet us with that Sunday breakfast
We are your family—and ever grateful to be so

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A lifesaving Narcan program has been expanded to a new location on the East End: Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital has brought its Narcan Rescue Station Program to businesses in Hampton Bays
As a result of a presentation on the Narcan Rescue Station initiative to the Hampton Bays Rotary Club earlier this year
club members looked to embrace the program through a community training event
April 17 at the Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corp building
Local business owners and concerned citizens gathered to hear firsthand accounts and expert insights from Lt
William Kiernan of the Southampton Town Police Department; Briana Gladding
paramedic with Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corps; Rick Nydegger
chief of the Hampton Bays Fire Department; and Dr
Daniel Van Arsdale of Stony Brook Medicine
Kiernan shared a story from the early days of Narcan use within the police department
recalling how he saved a teenager's life just two weeks after receiving his training
the victim regained consciousness," he said
Gladding pointed out that many individuals who receive Narcan are not always experiencing opioid abuse
they are adults who accidentally overdose by forgetting they’ve already taken their medication," she said
reflecting on how access to Narcan could have made a difference in his own family; he lost his son to a tragic overdose
he picked up multiple Narcan kits to equip all Hampton Bays Fire Department chiefs' vehicles
representing Community Action for Social Justice
led a hands-on training session followed by a question-and-answer session
aimed to provide attendees with practical knowledge and tools to respond to opioid-related emergencies
and Southampton Publick House took part in the initiative
picking up Narcan Rescue Stations and additional doses for their establishments
Others have expressed interest in obtaining supplies
marking a strong community response to the growing effort
SBELIH said they and their partners plan to continue "to take proactive steps in combating the opioid crisis
access and compassion where it’s needed most."
The original Narcan stations were installed in Greenport businesses: A cloak of mourning hung heavy over Greenport in 2021 after a batch of fentanyl-laced cocaine led to eight overdoses and six deaths over eight days on the North Fork and Shelter Island
That loss continued to reverberate and then
the Greenport Village Improvement District
and Community Action for Social Justice came together to unveil the new Narcan rescue stations
The rescue stations were situated in North Fork establishments
The first two were installed at Greenport Harbor Brewing Co
“It’s painful to remember the summer of 2021,” Richard Vandenburgh
wrote in a letter to local business owners
As the head of the Greenport Village Business Improvement District
I am reaching out to ask you to help me prevent more tragedies like the one we faced in 2021."
The Narcan rescue stations come equipped with multiple doses of naloxone
the life-saving drug that prevents death from opioid overdose
as well as detailed administering instructions
"The tragedy that occurred in 2021 could have been prevented," said Paul J
chief administrative officer at SBELIH at the time
"These Narcan rescue stations will honor the legacies of those we’ve lost by ensuring nobody else meets the same tragic fate."
The program was even implemented in Southold Town Hall. And Kait's Angels worked to install the Narcan stations in schools
The Montauk Skate PArk was recently renovated
Southampton Town officials said they are seeking input on revamping the Red Creek Skate Park in Hampton Bays
2025 the Southampton Town Police Department
in conjunction with the Southampton Town Highway Department
will again launch the Canoe Place Traffic Reduction Program
aimed at addressing the ongoing seasonal traffic congestion
The program will be implemented on weekdays between the hours of 5:30 and 9:30 a.m
The traffic light at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Canoe Place Road will be set to flash
and no left turns will be permitted at that intersection
Other traffic lane modifications will also be deployed to facilitate traffic flow through the intersection
The program schedule will be put on hold during the spring school break week of April 14 – 18
Weather considerations that impact traffic volume may also affect the schedule
The Police Department will communicate this information through its website (www.southamptontownny.gov/1805/police)
Southampton Town Police officers will be posted to assure motorists’ safety
and Highway Department staff will be posted as well to deploy traffic cones
and electronic message boards to alert and inform motorists traveling through the intersection
The town is encouraging motorists to support these efforts by adhering to traffic laws
and being mindful of pedestrians and other road users
Supervisor Maria Moore emphasized that the Town Board is committed to maintaining this program as part of the larger effort to find ways to mitigate traffic congestion
The program will be in place until the end of September
at which point it will be subject to review and possible extension

Patrick’s Day Parade made a triumphant return on Saturday
the event was a vibrant celebration of Irish culture and local pride
“This year’s turnout was beyond anything we’ve seen before,” said Peter Feeney
“We were overwhelmed by the support from the community
and organizations come together really shows how much this parade means to Hampton Bays.”
The 2025 parade featured several memorable highlights
including the much-anticipated appearance of Grand Marshal Joe Fellingham

Participants included the Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce
known for being one of Hampton Bays’ favorite Halloween attractions

The event would not have been possible without the help of the 30–40 volunteers
and the hanging of flags the morning of the event
a massive Irish flag was proudly hung across Montauk Highway
creating a powerful visual moment that underscored the pride and unity felt throughout the day
Sponsorships played a vital role in the parade’s success
this parade thrives because of our incredible volunteers and generous sponsors,” Feeney added

there's good news for those who utilize the Ponquogue Bridge in Hampton Bays
Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine announced that precautionary measures are being implemented
which will allow the Ponquogue Bridge to be opened to limited traffic the week of March 3
"The Ponquogue Bridge is critically important to emergency services
and local traffic; we needed to find a way to open the bridge as quickly as possible," said Romaine
"Our county Department of Public Works has been working with the New York State Department of Transportation and a plan to immediately open the bridge has been designed."
includes shifting the travel lanes eastward
which will be accomplished with lightweight barriers
The temporary measures will be completed in the week of March 3
"The SCDPW is proceeding to engage an engineer on an emergency basis to design a permanent repair to return this bridge to its 40-ton capacity," said Romaine
NYSDOT will continue regular inspections to monitor any areas of concern."
and pedestrians will be able to use the bridge
Special permits will be issued to ambulances that weigh up to 14,500 lbs
and we need to ensure our first responders can serve their communities," said Romaine
Vehicles up to 20 tons can continue to use the Post Lane Bridge in Quogue and up to 40 tons can use the Beach Lane Bridge in Westhampton Beach
A few days after the Ponquogue Bridge in Hampton Bays was closed until further notice Friday
no definitive answers were initially given this week about what the future held for the structure
Southampton Town public safety and emergency management administrator
told Patch Wednesday that Suffolk County officials had indicated that they were expecting further analysis sometime Thursday
regarding the results from the re-inspection that took place on Monday
"That information will then need to be evaluated to see what options exist for the path forward," Murphy said
"We remain hopeful that they will be able to at least open in a limited capacity to accommodate some of the normal use."
Other than initial information that town officials received
"indicating that there was some spalling of concrete found," Murphy said Wednesday that so far
town officials had not learned of any additional
detailed information about the issues identified
Spalling means that concrete has broken down and chipped away, sometimes leading it to be "compromised"
Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore said the town received word Friday from Suffolk County that the Suffolk County Department of Public Works had closed the bridge until further notice
Murphy sent out a release that said the bridge was closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic in both directions
while the NYSDOT was conducting a routine inspection of the bridge on February 20
conditions were identified that have since resulted in the closing of the bridge
County and state engineers continue to analyze the data in an effort to determine what additional action may be necessary," the release said
"Until such time as the Ponquogue Bridge reopens
residents and visitors are asked to pursue alternate means of accessing Dune Road
Residents and visitors are also urged to be mindful of the potential traffic impacts to other bridges and roadways that might provide access."
The notice continued: "As the town becomes aware of additional information
or a projected timeline for the reopening of the bridge
the Ponquogue Bridge in Southampton has been closed
Motorists are advised to utilize alternative routes until further notice," a Suffolk County spokesperson told Patch last week
