this year may mark the last playing softball for Duffie Stone
(WCIV) — A local softball player is returning for his 28th year playing for the Lowcountry Senior Softball Association
this year may mark the last for Duffie Stone
Stone helped to create the league in the 1990’s
after switching from playing baseball to softball
“I love to pitch and get somebody to hit a pop-up or something of that nature
You don’t strike many people out in slow pitch,” he said
The league is now comprised of more than 200 men – the largest roster yet
The youngest players are 40 years younger than Stone
so he’s a role model for everybody in the league to just keep going,” LSSA Secretary Jerry McKamy said
Stone has been inducted in several Halls of Fame and only recently stopped playing travel softball
you can’t expect a whole lot,” Stone said jokingly
“Eat right and stay active and exercise a little bit each day
Not only does Stone play in two softball games each week
he also umpires local high school softball games weekly
you got to do this up and down for about an hour-and-a-half to two hours every time you have a game,” he said
Men 48 years old and older are invited to play in the league. Those interested can visit lowcountryseniorsoftball.com
Bobby is survived by his children: April Hanahan-Gerken (Ryan)
going to car shows and hanging out with his family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 10:30-11:30 am on Thursday
where the funeral service will begin at 11:30 am
Burial with military honors will follow at Dayton National Cemetery at 1:00 pm.

(WCIV) — Eggs prices are at an all-time high
thanks to inflation woes and a bird flu outbreak
more people are turning to backyard chicken coops nationwide
But the city of Hanahan is bucking that trend
with a long-standing ban on keeping animals
There was a big movement back in 2019 to try and get the ban lifted
the number of households with backyard chickens has nearly doubled
RELATED READING | "Egg prices soar amid bird flu outbreak, leaving shoppers scrambling."
A long-standing ban on owning chickens in Hanahan was passed back in 1992
"Our current ordinance shares that there are no farm animals
"Many other cities in the region do allow them
A movement in 2019 worked to get the ban lifted
but the rest of the council voted no," said Rainwater
"So once something doesn't pass it
you need to have a year before the same ordinance can be brought up again without any substance changes
And we felt like there really wasn't a strong push at that time from our council side of things to have that."
she hasn't seen the same passion for removing the ban as she did six years ago
"We did have one person from our community come to our most recent council meeting
and they shared that they would like to see this brought up again for change
But it was only one person," Rainwater said
but at this time it just seemed like a little bit of curiosity but not a movement or anything like that."

But convincing the city council isn't the only obstacle
"There are several HOA subdivisions in the city of Hanahan
and so that's something that needs to be considered as well because this wouldn't just blanket allow chickens to be throughout the community," Rainwater said
which most of them do say that you can't have chickens
The mayor also says there are those in the community who want to keep the ban
And if it comes before the council again she hopes both sides find common ground
"I think there really does need to be a collaboration between those that want it and those that don't
to say how can we provide this but still be respectful and honor those that don't want it," Rainwater said
More than 11 million households in the United States have backyard chickens

The Pezcoller Foundation–American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) International Award for Extraordinary Achievement in Cancer Research will be presented to Douglas Hanahan
during the upcoming 2025 AACR Annual Meeting
to be held April 25–30 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago
Hanahan is the Ludwig Distinguished Scholar at the Lausanne Branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research
He is being recognized for his fundamental discoveries in cancer research that have had a far-reaching translational impact
Through the generation and characterization of innovative mouse models
he defined multistep tumorigenesis by uncovering the molecular mechanisms required to drive cancer growth and helped establish the principle that malignant traits in cancer are conferred by cooperative interactions between cancer cells and co-opted host cells recruited into the tumor microenvironment
the “Hallmarks of Cancer,” a logical framework for rationalizing the vast complexity of cancer that continues to evolve and resonate broadly with the entire cancer research community
The Pezcoller Foundation–AACR International Award for Extraordinary Achievement in Cancer Research was established in 1997 to recognize scientists who have made major scientific discoveries in basic or translational cancer research
Awardees must be active in cancer research
have a record of recent noteworthy publications
and be conducting ongoing work that holds promise for continued substantive contributions to progress in the field of cancer
Hanahan is a scientific pioneer who has expertly helped propel and shape the emergence of functional genetics in cancer research
he demonstrated that oncogene expression is not sufficient to drive tumor formation
identifying that tumorigenesis requires the acquisition of secondary events
Hanahan was also among the first to demonstrate that the tumor microenvironment is a barrier to antitumor cytotoxic T-cell activity
he helped establish the concept that inflammation can be tumorigenic and explored the tumor-promoting functions of tumor-infiltrating immune cells
In collaboration with the late Judah Folkman
Hanahan co-discovered the “angiogenic switch,” a key process in tumor growth
This fundamental work led to critical insights into therapeutic strategies for targeting tumor angiogenesis
such as the identification of unexpected adaptive resistance mechanisms
which illuminated why some monotherapies exhibit limited clinical efficacy
he has demonstrated the potential of angiogenesis inhibitors in co-targeting treatment strategies
his latest research has profoundly contributed to cancer-related neuroscience by revealing the functional importance of co-opted neuronal signaling pathways in cancer cell invasion
Hanahan has been a member of the AACR since 2000 and was elected as a Fellow of the AACR Academy in 2014
His scientific achievements have been recognized with numerous awards and honors
including the AACR Lifetime Achievement Award (2014)
the Fondazione San Salvatore Award for Cancer Research (2012)
and the National Cancer Association of France Grand Prize for Biology (1993)
He is also an elected foreign member of the Royal Society (2023) and an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (2010)
and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2007)
Hanahan earned his undergraduate degree in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his PhD in biophysics at Harvard University

Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to a pedestrian being struck and killed by a train the evening of March 27
The person was pronounced dead on the scene
HANAHAN — A train passing through the area struck and killed a 53-year-old man in the early evening of March 27
Hanahan police responded to a portion of track near Northbrook Drive and Eagle Landing Boulevard to find a person dead
Hickmon and he was pronounced dead on the scene
Authorities are currently attempting to determine Hickmon's city of residence
There is a possibility the man was homeless
Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell told The Post and Courier
The train was halted for nearly an hour and 45 minutes as officials surveyed the scene
Gebhardt said that Hickmon had been crossing the tracks outside of a designated railroad grade crossing
typically delineated by well-marked signage
striped gates that close roadways to vehicle traffic
The Federal Railroad Administration labels those who cross the tracks outside of grade crossings as "trespassers," given they traversed the railway without implied permission
Taking shortcuts across tracks accounts for the majority of rail-related fatalities across the nation
While train-related deaths are relatively rare in South Carolina — especially compared to the rate of fatalities in traffic collisions — on average, trespassing accounts for over half of the fatalities yearly, according to a Post and Courier analysis of FRA data from 2015-2023
Hickmon is one of a few to die by impact from a train in Berkeley County this year
In the early-morning hours of New Year's Day, 72-year-old Jesse Wallace was struck while walking across the tracks near near NAD Road in Goose Creek
The Hanahan Police Department was among several jurisdictions who responded to the scene
Earlier this month, on March 13, 59-year-old William Jeffrey Foster was killed after an Amtrak train struck his vehicle on Altman Street in Moncks Corner
A 15-year-old girl was riding in the car as well and was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition
according to an incident report from the Moncks Corner Police Department
Moncks Corner police Chief Lee Mixon told The Post and Courier she was "fighting for her life" at the Medical University of South Carolina on March 21
Foster drove past and bypassed the grade-crossing gates that day
according to video surveillance obtained from the scene
six other vehicles had successfully gone past the gates and reached the other side

police reported a local man broke in to a Charleston Water System facility and stole a vehicle
which he crashed moments later less than a mile away
Officers with the Hanahan Police Department responded to a Charleston Water Systems facility off of Railroad Avenue a little before midnight March 25
They'd been notified that there was a trespasser on site
Chief Rick Gebhardt told The Post and Courier
The trespasser had stolen a CWS-licensed SUV and drove it from the scene
But less than half a mile down the roadway the man flipped and rolled the vehicle onto its roof
Hanahan officers arrested Keith Lee Christopher of North Charleston in the early-morning hours of March 26
He is charged with two counts of grand larceny
one count of malicious injury to property greater than $10,000 and reckless driving
Both grand larceny and malicious injury to property charges are classified as felonies in South Carolina and are punishable by up to 10 years in prison
It was unclear if the suspect had been under the influence of alcohol or drugs while allegedly committing the crimes
He said Christopher received minor injuries as a result of the crash but was cleared from an area hospital before being booked and held at the Hill Finklea Detention Center
"We're thrilled that no employees were injured and the water treatment process was not impacted," CWS spokesperson Mike Saia said
Around 64 million gallons of water flow through the Hanahan water facility daily
Two perimeter fences were damaged after the stolen vehicle was driven through them
The repairs were expected to be completed by the evening of March 26
A number of other CWS vehicles on site appeared to have been rummaged through and administrators are still working to survey what items may have been pilfered
In regards to future security threats to the site
While this incident "exposed some minor weaknesses" in security
for someone to impact the water treatment process," he said
All parts of the water treatment processes are monitored 24 hours a day
While it is "unfortunate" that CWS will need to repair the fences and likely completely replace the stolen SUV
Saia said he was confident that the nearly 500,000 households receiving water from CWS would not be impacted from the incident

New census estimates say Mount Pleasant and North Charleston had large population gains
while Charleston lagged and Columbia shrank
Despite efforts to put the brakes on growth
Mount Pleasant gained more residents than any other S.C
according to newly-released census estimates
Mayor Will Haynie called the town's rate of growth unsustainable
and said that's why Mount Pleasant now limits the number of building permits it will issue
Most large cities in South Carolina grew modestly last year
but many smaller towns and cities saw rapid gains
Only North Charleston came close to the population gains seen in Mount Pleasant
Hanahan gained more than 1,200 residents last year
giving it the highest population growth rate in the Charleston area among cities with at least 25,000 residents
"Hanahan is a pretty welcoming community," said Hanahan Administrator Mike Cochran
"There are no 'Ohioans go home' stickers.”
Greenville and Summerville saw meager population increases last year
and Columbia — which used to be the state's largest city — saw its population decline for a second consecutive year
has lived in the Charleston area since he was a toddler
He now lives in North Charleston near Dorchester Road and marvels at the way the area has changed
“The area where I live now was all woods," he said
"They didn’t call it Ashley Phosphate (Road) for nothing — there were phosphate mines
referring to Lake Moultrie above Moncks Corner
Large numbers of new residents can have great impacts on traffic
crowded classrooms and other quality-of-life issues
The way those impacts are experienced depend on how quickly the population grows
and how large a town or city is to begin with
Both North Charleston and Fort Mill gained just over 2,300 residents in 2018
North Charleston is the state's third-largest city
and those new residents raised the city's population by just over 2 percent
but in Fort Mill that was a more than 13 percent population increase in a single year
"At some point we’ll hit a saturation point
spokesman for the Fort Mill School District
which gained about 1,000 students last year and expects the same next year
York County approved an $18,158 impact fee on every new single-family home
to help fund the needs driven by arriving residents
New multi-family homes have a $12,020 impact fee
The district has been collecting the money
South Carolina has been a growth leader in the U.S.
driven by new residents pouring in from other states
The Palmetto State had the ninth-fastest growth rate in the nation in 2018
with the state's population growing by an estimated 62,908
Most of that growth came in smaller towns and cities that added another 1,000 or 2,000 residents to their populations last year
towns and cities that gained at least 1,000 residents in 2018 came in all sizes
Goose Creek and Moncks Corner each gained more residents than Columbia
Greer and Myrtle Beach also saw large gains
One surprise in the new census estimates was the fall-off in growth in most of the state's largest cities
Charleston gained fewer than 500 residents while Columbia lost more than 400
Greenville only gained an estimated 295 residents in 2018
two years after that city was estimated to have grown by more than 3,500
The 2020 census will provide detailed counts
Charleston estimates its population is 154,069
The Census Bureau estimates the city's population was 136,208 less than a year ago
said the city's estimate anticipates the people who will occupy homes that
nearly 18,000 people is a big gap between estimates — a gap the 2020 Census will later resolve
Lindsey said that if Charleston's growth slowed
and “there is plentiful and less expensive land
which creates affordable housing opportunities that simply don’t exist in the city of Charleston.”
Mount Pleasant estimates that the town's population was 88,252 at the end of 2018
then growth has slowed to an acceptable rate
growth at 3 percent or more yearly continued
rapid growth has come on top of rapid growth
Fort Mill's population has climbed an estimated 69 percent since 2010 — a rate of exponential growth that makes Mount Pleasant's look subdued
The most rapid growth in the Charleston metro area
growth trends are changing for many reasons
Some cities have become home to large new subdivisions with relatively affordable housing
Others have seen so much recent growth that they are running out of land to develop
and people can't move there unless there's somewhere to live
“I think we’re probably nearing the end of that run (of rapid growth)," said Cochran
“We still have probably a few more thousand to add before the city is built out."
A great deal of scrappiness remained behind as the Hawks take aim at the top half of a tough region
Cappelloni’s bunch improved to 8-4 on the season with a 2-1 showing in the Carolina Invitational Dec
The Hawks defeated Cathedral (53-25) and Cardinal Newman (49-33) and dropped a close one against Lake Marion (42-40)
“I think we’re capable of placing high in our region and performing well against the tougher teams,” Cappelloni said
“We want to host a playoff game like last year and go further in the playoffs
We’re going to have to win close games because that’s what good teams do
We can’t just win the easy ones.”
The Hawks are in a league with two of the best teams in the state
4 Orangeburg-Wilkinson are part of Region 6-3A with North Charleston and Battery Creek
“We’re trying to use our speed and play fast,” Cappelloni said
so we’re going to try to get up and down the court
play aggressively and take some chances on defense
