the time has come: my senior column.
I spent a long time wondering how I was going to approach this moment
How do I make my last-ever article for Onward State as meaningful as possible
I kept a notes page since December of things that I might put in here
I’ve had a blast writing over 500 (nearly 600!) stories over my four years here.
What’s funny to me is that after spending so much time telling other people’s stories
I conclude my time here by writing about my own
I’ll do that by blending a typical Penn State football game from last season and my college years
James Franklin takes his lap around the field
The players eventually make their way onto the field for the first time and begin warmups
and everyone prepares for the game to get underway
I vividly remember the process of choosing Penn State
packing almost everything I owned into a few suitcases
and moving three and a half hours from Silver Spring
and since I didn’t come from a Penn State family
I wasn’t yet indoctrinated into the “cult.” Was I excited for the new chapter
Did I have a rough idea of what was going to happen
After Zombie Nation plays and the entire stadium does its “We Are” chant
Penn State takes the field against its opponent for the first time
But the opposition somehow manages to put together a good drive
The Nittany Lions are adjusting to what they’re seeing
and the dynamic duo of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen get a couple of first downs
but the offense settles for a Ryan Barker field goal.
My freshman year was pretty weird in hindsight
I lived in North Halls and had a roommate who had no desire to leave the room and take in what this amazing school has to offer
I joined Onward State as soon as I could when I got to campus
and I was eager to get my college experience underway
I was only getting a taste of what I’d gotten myself into.
I started off covering Penn State women’s hockey
instead of during the game on WordPress like I was supposed to
There were times when I questioned if I’d made the right choice.
Some guy named Frankie Marzano (who ultimately became one of the most important people in my college experience) allowed me to start covering men’s hockey
and I spent entire weekends practically living at Pegula Ice Arena because I’d sometimes cover two series in one weekend
While most people wouldn’t like the idea of that
I’d begun to carve my place in Onward State
Penn State starts to get more of a feel for the game
Allar finds Tyler Warren for the game’s first touchdown
But the opposition continues to keep up with a gutsy score of its own that somehow catches the secondary lacking
Although the Nittany Lions are the better team
but the second quarter was far from easy.
but various trials and tribulations made my life quite difficult during parts of my sophomore year.
Writing for Onward State wasn’t just something I loved
I wasn’t sure who I was or if I was in the right place
One of the reasons I stayed was because The Blog gave me a purpose and a chance to do something I love
I put my head down and applied myself to covering men’s hockey that fall
I focused on myself and what I felt I needed to do to be successful
Former Managing Editor Gabe Angieri hired me as an associate editor
I was selected to cover Penn State football.
I wasn’t entirely sure what was going to happen
A difficult school year ended on a very positive note for me in so many aspects
and I felt good going into the halftime of my college experience
Some people leave their seats for a chicken basket
and the Blue Band retakes the field for its halftime show
adjustments are being made in the locker room
the Nittany Lions know exactly what they’re dealing with and what they need to do to have a successful second half.
I spent the summer between my sophomore and junior year studying abroad in Brno
I learned as much about myself and grew as much as in any period in my life
and left with a better understanding of the world
I completed an internship with Czech Television there
which further affirmed my love of journalism.
especially to places that are far away and off the beaten path
and Salar Mohamadpour for being along on that ride with me
but I felt very comfortable and optimistic about the second half
as it holds the opponent scoreless in another outstanding third quarter
After Singleton and Allen propel the offense to the goal line
Allar hits Khalil Dinkins for a layup touchdown in the end zone
A Jaylen Reed interception gives the Nittany Lions prime field position
and another drive culminates with Warren running the ball into the end zone.
I’d established myself as a prominent sports writer on staff. I began covering football games alongside Joe Lister, CJ Doebler, Mikey DeAngelis, and Hailey Stutzman. Our first road trip to Illinois, which CJ referenced in his senior column on Wednesday
was the beginning of a generational run of road trips across the country over the following two years.
I was having so much fun — I got to combine my love of sports journalism and traveling into one job
I became even better as a journalist during football season and embraced the weekly grind of being a football reporter
I still got to cover men’s hockey and baseball in the spring
Life for any college student changes when they turn 21
I quickly fell in love with Bill Pickle’s Tap Room
and I’m dreaming about my next $5 Busch pitcher as I write this.
Franklin has frequently talked about how important the “middle eight” minutes of a football game can be
they were crucial because every part of my life got significantly better.
and the defense builds on its strong third-quarter performance
Allar and much of the starting crew are replaced by younger backups eager to get playing time
I was anxious about leaving the DMV and moving somewhere else for the first time
I’ve been anxious about leaving Happy Valley and Onward State
But I’ve slowly accepted that my time here is coming to an end
I’ve tried my best to stay as present and balanced as possible this year
I’m surrounded by so many amazing people – friends
Just ask someone who’s had the misfortune of sharing one with me
I’m blessed to think about the run I’ve had
Mitch Corcoran replaced Joe on the football beat
I’m honored to call some of my closest friends
Although this column is mostly about football
my time on the hockey beat is just as important
to end my time on the beat at the Frozen Four a few weeks ago was a blessing
I see a program headed in a great direction
guided by a man who’s just as good at coaching as he is a person
I can’t wait to see what these three teams do in the coming years.
While I’ve written plenty for Onward State
I’ve slowly become more focused on preparing the next wave of writers in the twilight of my time here to take over the football
I see a young corps of great people who are eager and dedicated to improving their craft
just like I was only a few years ago.
The entire Penn State team lines up to sing the Alma Mater with the students
The players head off the field and into the locker room full of jubilation
The media gather in Beaver Stadium’s media room and wait for Franklin to finally give his postgame press conference
He eventually turns up and starts by thanking the media for coming out and covering Penn State football
After Penn State beat Minnesota last season
which included a gutsy fake punt on fourth down
Franklin said he kept the ball because he wanted the Nittany Lions to end the game “on our terms.”
my last chapter of college is indeed ending on my terms.
As graduation has loomed over the last several months
I’ve tried to put thinking about it off and be present
But I’ve witnessed the time gradually tick
The force of time is akin to few things in this universe
How inevitable it is makes it one of the most powerful forces in this world — that no matter what
all things good or bad will conclude when time says so.
these four years aren’t the best of your life
they were transformative: I entered as a kid
but don’t take it personally if I didn’t mention you.
To my family: Thanks for always having my back
Whether it’s a late-night phone call with my Dad
or sharing stories about our respective schools with Graham
Although you won’t be a Nittany Lion this fall
To Frankie: If it wasn’t for your guidance
I genuinely don’t know how my career here would’ve turned out
You showed me the ropes and always had my back
past and present: We all helped each other grow as writers and as people
I’ll cherish our time sharing press boxes and taking road trips together for the rest of my life
and more — thanks for being in my corner
You’re all tremendous people with bright futures.
and you’ve each had great impacts on my life
I’m excited to see what the future has in store for all of you
You took a kid from Maryland who’d never been here before
Nolan wrote for Onward State from 2021 until 2025. He mainly covered Penn State football, men’s hockey, and baseball, and he was also an associate editor. A Silver Spring, Maryland, native, Nolan is an avid D.C. sports and Liverpool fan. You can follow him on Twitter @nolan_wick or email him at [email protected].
Bo Nickal’s undefeated MMA record was snapped on Saturday night.

Sergeev impressed during his lone season with the Nittany Lions, helping lead them to the program’s first Frozen Four.
“I am grateful for my time at Penn State and for all of the opportunities I have received thus far,” MacBean expressed
“This program has brought me lifelong friendships and has helped shape me into the person that I am today
so I am thrilled to be returning for my final year of eligibility in 2025
and I am so excited to get back to work in Happy Valley!”

She notched the third-longest goal scoring streak in Penn State history

with her 16 total goals standing as the most at PSU since Hayes’ 19 tallies in 2013
MacBean registered six match-winning goals for the Blue & White
the second most in the country and seventh most nationally
Over the course of her decorated career with the Blue & White
making 45 starts and tallying 3,831 total minutes of time on the field since her debut campaign in the fall of 2022
Her 29 collegiate goals are coupled with nine total assists for a grand total of 67 points
making her the highest-scoring active student-athlete on the Penn State roster heading into the program’s 32nd varsity season
MacBean has improved on her single-season goal scoring total in every season of her career
catapulting from three goals in 2022 to 10 in 2023 and 16 a season ago
She has found the back of the net for the match-winning tally on 11 occasions highlighted by a single-season career best of six a year ago

AZ — Community members living off State Route 303 near Peoria say their growing Arizona neighborhood has one big problem: Happy Valley Road
At its intersections at Dysart Road and El Granada Boulevard
some drivers fly through going 20 miles per hour over the speed limit
Robin Ellis says this makes it dangerous for commuters trying to turn onto the road
“It drives me crazy when they don’t slow down," Ellis said
and her neighbors came out to observe the traffic during morning rush hour
They say the issues have grown worse as more housing developments have popped up around the road
“They have been telling us for at least three years now that they’re going to put lights here," Ellis said
The Happy Valley Road intersections at Dysart and El Granada are both on the Maricopa County Department of Transportation’s project list
and neither has been funded for construction
The county provided us with the following statement on the current status of the projects:
"While long-term transportation solutions take time
the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is committed to enhancing mobility on County roadways
MCDOT is actively exploring interim improvements at the intersection of Happy Valley Rd and El Granada Blvd and is hopeful to move forward with a limited-term alternative while the full intersection solutions are fully scoped and designed
We anticipate work on the interim improvements could begin as early as June this year."
there are more signs promising more houses
Ellis says it just means more traffic problems ahead

Just 20 miles from the bustle of the medina
Ourika valley is a place of magical gardens
olive groves and walking trails in the foothills of the High Atlas
From my vantage point on a rooftop terrace I can see the snaking form of the Ourika River meandering through the swathe of palmerias at the southern edge of Marrakech
It’s hard to imagine that barely 20 miles (32km) separate me from the frantic bustle of the famous Djemaa el Fna square and the clamour of the souks
“Salam alaikum,” says Abdelkarim Ait Ali, owner of Ourika Lodge (doubles from £53)
as he loads my already groaning table with the generous breakfast offerings that are part of traditional Amazigh (Berber) hospitality
“There are so many [hot air] balloons this morning!” he says
View image in fullscreenI hadn’t even noticed the distant specks in the skies above the city
The realisation that even the skies are crowded makes it easier to picture the ruckus that reverberates through one of the world’s most vibrant cities each morning
I’d fallen in love with Marrakech during my first assignment there three decades ago
I’m immensely grateful that I’d decided to base myself in Ourika valley
where the only sounds this morning are the sizzling of my Berber omelette and the braying of a mule from the mountain trail behind the house
View image in fullscreenAt weekends
these colourful riverside cafes on the upper Ourika are full of visiting Marrakchis
Photograph: M Bell/Getty ImagesAbdelkarim had guided me on a hike into those mountains the previous day and I’d been astounded that such pristine wilderness could lie so close to a city of a million people
leading tours and expeditions throughout the High Atlas and beyond
He shows me carob trees with their chocolate-flavoured seed pods and cypress seeds harvested for what French colonials called le poivre des pauvres (the poor man’s pepper)
“Mountain people place dried oleander leaves on a fire to create antiseptic smoke,” he tells me
I’m astounded that such pristine wilderness could lie so close to a city of a million peopleFrom the ravine below comes the sound of a wild boar cracking through the vegetation
She emerges from the thicket with five striped piglets hurrying to keep up
but fortunately we are downwind and she remains unaware of our presence
patches of snow glint on the peaks of Toubkal national park
It has been four years since north Africa’s highest mountains had a proper snowfall
and the ski-season at nearby Oukaïmeden has been almost nonexistent once again this year
The last wild Atlas lion was shot near those high peaks in 1942
but experts believe that African wolves are now making a comeback in the High Atlas’s remotest valleys
We see the hoof prints of boar everywhere and it’s easy to imagine that the wolves may find rich pickings if they return
Abdelkarim explains that the boar population is almost at infestation level as their meat is haram (forbidden to Muslims)
There are worries that the drought is bringing them increasingly into contact with the villagers
as the hungry pigs raid fields and homesteads on a nightly basis

Spring meltwater rather than rainfall is the primary life force for the Ourika valley’s fruit orchards
It is where I learn how saffron, Morocco’s valuable “red gold”, is harvested. Morocco’s deliciously refreshing mint tea is celebrated, but the saffron-scented tea I sip on a sunny terrace in the Jardin du Safran, amid an orchard of persimmons, kumquats and clementines, stands out. Even among the mind-boggling assortment of flavours – thyme tea, sage tea, lavender tea, absinthe, even artemisia (AKA wormwood) tea – that are popular among the Amazigh, this is a highlight.

We fuel our exploration of the Friday market in Aghmat village with succulent Ouarzazate dates and sugarcane juice that is tangy with crushed ginger
Ongoing excavations at Aghmat archaeological site prove that this now humble village was the regional capital for more than 700 years
until the city was relocated to Marrakech’s current position in the 11th century
The brick domes that had been part of Aghmat’s majestic hammam were occupied by a community of potters for longer than anyone could recall before archaeologists began restoring the site in 2005
The restoration project remained largely unaffected by the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck on 8 September 2023
killing almost 3,000 people and destroying or damaging an estimated 60,000 houses

“It’s strange how fate works,” Khalid ben Youssef tells me when I arrive for a pottery class at his workshop in Tafza

but at least the years of drought have been kind to the pottery industry
and the roofs and courtyards throughout the village are permanently stacked with ranks of terracotta pots

The series of seven picturesque falls in Setti Fatma village is by far Ourika valley’s most popular tourist drawcard
sightseers often stop to have their photos taken mounted on camels
After taking a selfie at cascade number one
most visitors promptly cross the river to descend back to the town
But Abdelkarim guides me onwards up a narrow track – little more than a goat trail – which leads through a jaw-dropping chasm to the second
Half an hour later we reach the fifth cascade

When most Penn Staters think of springtime sports it typically doesn’t include men’s and women’s ice hockey
When Matt DiMarsico scored the winning overtime goal against UConn in the NCAA Regional Championship game
hugged my wife and we jumped up and down as if we just won the lottery
The fact that Matt is a Pittsburgh area kid from the Pens Elite program made it even more amazing for me
Because that program evolved from the Amateur Pens program of which I was one of the original co-founders in 1983
who continues to support Penn State hockey to this day
was a member of our 1990 Icers ACHA National Championship team that was recognized at Pegula Ice Arena back in January at alumni weekend just as Coach Gadowsky’s guys were starting their amazing turnaround from a slow fall semester start
spoke at a conference at Penn State on April 10 and immediately flew to St
Louis for the Frozen Four game with Boston University
That is the power of Penn State alumni loyalty
my mind was a torrent of emotions and flashbacks to days gone by
Because I am sort of the “unofficial” historian of PSU hockey (which just means I’m old!)
my thoughts turned to hockey ghosts of the past: Captain Herb Baetz from 1909
and 1940s varsity coach Arthur Davis and his players like John Dufford and George Wolbert

Morris Kurtz who sustained the program through the 1970s
Jon Shellington and Larry Rocha and my teammates
and the many hockey management volunteers who helped me survive Dear Old State from 1978-82
To Greenberg Ice Pavilion Manager Larry Fies
HPER Dean Karl Stoedelfalke and especially my mentor and old boss
who took a chance on a 27-year-old to become the Icers’ coach in 1987
Scott Balboni and our academic counselor extraordinaire
Don Boller and the whole team at McClanahan’s)
the amazing student volunteers from the HMA and our amazing fans
especially the indomitable Section E loyalists who preceded the current Roar Zone
I know I’m forgetting some wonderful people
ESPN’s John Buccigross described the Icers this way: “It was a club hockey juggernaut
They had this cool little punk rock following.”
In case you think I forgot the most important group
I could never and will never forget the players who came before me
the guys I was fortunate to be teammates with
the ones I was blessed to coach and the ones who came after my time at PSU who still electrify Pegula Ice Arena
calls and social media post mentions about the program making it to the Frozen Four
It’s so nice to be remembered but I tell you that for every time someone mentioned me
construction manager and a lot more who all played a role in the history of PSU hockey
Because of their passion for hockey and love of Penn State
now we all get to enjoy the fruits of a dream that started over a century ago
“Team Pegula” came together quickly in 2010 and included Crawford Architects
Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Plant
Simply too many people to thank in one article but know that it took a lot of people to make it happen.
I was simply blessed to be one of the band leaders of the Icer Family and Team Pegula
It was a magical series of events that led to the building of the Pegula Ice Arena and the resurrection of the varsity hockey program
I’m so grateful to all the people who love PSU hockey and it’s awesome to witness what Coach Gadowsky and these players have accomplished
So that brings us to Coach Gadowsky and his coaches and staff
and most importantly the players on the 2024-25 team
You don’t know most of the people I mentioned above
because of the amazing turnaround season that you had
and by virtue of your making it to the Frozen Four
you brought more joy to more people than you will ever know
We salute you for what you accomplished on the ice
for representing us and the university with class and dignity
for maintaining high standards in the classroom and for being involved in the greater community.
The tears of joy flowing down our cheeks and the high fives and hugs throughout Nittany Nation after the OT goal against UConn were only possible because of your dedication and hard work on and off the ice
and your skill and talents coming together under the guiding hand of Coach Gadowsky and his staff.
but you will always be remembered as the first to reach the Frozen Four
another team (perhaps soon!) will rise up again and one day they will take it to the next step
that next step would not be possible.
The previous best season for a potential Frozen Four for men’s hockey was in 2020
their season ended early because of COVID-19
The team was the Big Ten regular season champion and one of the early favorites in the NCAA Tournament
Like this year’s team they had a standout goalie in Peyton Jones (currently playing professionally in Austria) and an outstanding offense led by current AHL stars Alex Limoges and Nate Sucese
This year’s team drew the University of Maine
ranked third nationally and the reigning Hockey East playoff champion
That may not mean much to the non-college hockey fan but for those who follow the game
PSU was about to get fed to a Bears program that captured the Hockey East Championship 5-2 over UConn
Keep in mind perennial powerhouse teams Boston College and Boston University are members of Hockey East and both would get upset
only fueling their desire to redeem themselves in the NCAA tournament
I got to watch that game with my former teammate John Davis at his home in Texas
The victory over UConn I watched at home with my wife
who sacrificed so much over the years while I was off prolonging adolescence and helping raise other people’s kids as a coach
a national title was not to be this year as Boston University scored a late empty net goal to finish its 3-1 win in the Frozen Four semifinal. But what a run for the Nittany Lion men’s team
While the Penn State women’s hockey team’s season concluded in late March with their third consecutive AHA conference title (a 4-1 win over Mercyhurst) and an appearance in the NCAA tournament (4-1 loss to St
one member of the team continued to play on the world stage.
Penn State women’s hockey standout Tessa Janecke (Orangeville, Illinois) scored the “Golden Goal” 17 minutes into overtime to lead Team USA to a 4-3 overtime win over archrival Canada this past Sunday at the 2025 IIHF women’s world hockey championship
Tessa has now won a gold and a silver medal with Team USA and holds Penn State’s career and single season scoring records
She is an often decorated AHA conference and nationally recognized forward who has helped lead the Penn State women’s team to become a perennial top 10 NCAA program
The success of the men’s and women’s programs (on and off the ice) are exactly what Terry and Kim Pegula hoped for when they made their record philanthropic gift in 2010 to build the Pegula Ice Arena and establish men’s and women’s varsity programs
The history of hockey at Penn State has a long and storied past and many long-time hockey fans in Happy Valley are enjoying the successes that have been decades in the making.
and some help from the ghosts of teams past
I’m bullish that springtime men’s and women’s hockey will become a common sight in Happy Valley for years to come

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Happy Valley Animation Festival will return to Penn State this spring for its fifth year
bringing an international showcase of animated works to venues across campus
with selections ranging from narrative short films and experimental pieces to motion graphics and interactive design
exhibitions and live-streamed events will be taking place from Thursday
HVAF highlights different styles of animation
from techniques like 2D hand-drawn and 3D computer-generated animation to stop motion
AR/VR experiences and experimental visual art forms
shared that the festival was started in 2020 by Carlos Rosas
head of the Digital Arts and Media Design Program (DART) in Penn State’s School of Visual Arts
“The festival began as a means for us as professors and digital artists and designers to engage with students within our program and across the university,” she said
“It also provides a platform for the amazing work being produced by both students and professionals all over the world.”
HVAF films — which were submitted and selected via an open call for entries between Oct
2024 — fall under three main categories: animated short films
experimental animation and animated motion graphics and design
at the Flex Theater at 132 HUB Robeson Center
public screening of selected HVAF 2025 award-winning animations in the international open and international student categories
The event will be live-streamed for remote audiences
“We began with a showcase event and quickly added events like the HUB Gallery exhibition and Palmer screenings,” Rosas said
“We’re very excited to have a screening of official selections at the Palmer Museum of Art this year
which marks our first screening in the beautiful new building.”
The festival also engages the community beyond the university
“We’ve had great interest from the State College Area School District in terms of faculty bringing classes to the showcase event,” Rosas noted
“We were also asked to put together a full-day screening event at the HUB Gallery so that K-12 classes could be brought in throughout the day to be inspired by the possibilities of animation.”
HVAF’s commitment to accessibility and education remains a key focus as the festival grows and evolves in the coming years
“We will continue to focus on keeping the competition free-for-all to enter and keeping screenings and exhibitions free-for-all to visit,” Rosas emphasized
“It’s exciting for us to be able to help young people understand the experiences
perspectives and vision of others from all over the world.”
This year’s festival received over 1,600 submissions from approximately 125 countries
with 90 to 125 official selections for screening
Approximately 16 to 20 films will be awarded best animation or finalist status

Jason and Sandy Nickal enjoy reflecting on nearly 30 years of adventures together
With last June’s hiring of Jason Nickal as head wrestling coach
it seemed to me that State College Area High School had staked a claim to future mat transcendence.
I know it’s dangerous to predict the future even with a stalwart leader like Nickal
There’s a reason why Wall Street firms monotonously say
“Past performance is not indicative of future results.”
But by snagging Nickal as the new Little Lion coach
State High got as close as possible to a sure thing
That’s why the announcement of Nickal’s hiring created a buzz like the one that followed Cael Sanderson’s selection by Penn State in 2009
Nickal is not only the father and personal mentor for Bo Nickal
a three-time NCAA champion for Penn State and rising star in UFC
but he is highly respected for developing championship teams at high schools in Colorado
With a 5-4 dual meet record recently finalized for his first State High season
Jason Nickal can’t yet claim any remarkable results in Happy Valley
and Sanderson’s first Nittany Lion team posted a ho-hum dual meet record of 13-6-1
That was the question in my mind when I recently spent two hours with Jason and his wife
The conversation was fascinating to me as we skimmed several decades of Nickal adventures
But it started with a contemporary shocker: the couple’s account of their Spring Creek cold plunge the day before
(“It was awesome,” said Sandy.)
Although I still haven’t decided if jumping into Spring Creek in February is laudable or ludicrous
And if it takes remarkable people to achieve remarkable results
State High wrestling is headed for an exciting future
served as State High’s coach from 2013-14 to 2023-24
“he did a phenomenal job” in providing stability for a program that had endured 0-5 dual meet records in both 2011-12 and 2012-13
But after 11 years on the job with a 73-89 dual meet record in the tough Mid-Penn Conference
Cummins felt he should devote more attention to his family
including two young boys in the State College youth wrestling program.
had come to State College in the fall of 2023
arriving here in time to help Bo and his wife
Although the senior Nickals didn’t plan to reside permanently in Happy Valley (they spent their first 11 months here in a 5th-wheel trailer at Seven Mountains Campground) Jason volunteered to serve as a Little Lion assistant coach
When State High’s head coaching position came open
those in the know wondered if Jason would apply
since he was loving his semi-retired life as a grandfather
as an assistant coach and as the wrestling category manager for BSN Sports.
But Jason did apply for the State High job
school officials did say yes and wrestling fans did raise their eyebrows
“I was at a meeting this past fall and an unnamed Mid Penn athletic director said
‘You’re going to get a lot of kids transferring to State College because of this.’ He wasn’t accusing us of recruiting; he just knew the statewide and national scene and he knew (Jason) is going to attract a lot of attention.”
As they shared the early years of their story
I noted that the Nickals moved frequently after getting married on Aug
this pair of schoolteachers sought out educational or athletic opportunities for their children
Wyoming (Jason’s hometown) and then to Rio Rancho
after achieving wrestling success in New Mexico and with Bo emerging as a star among rising ninth graders
Jason was pursued by such wrestling juggernauts as Iowa City West High School (near the University of Iowa)
Wyoming Seminary (northeast PA) and Wasatch High School (Sanderson’s alma mater in Utah).
But the Nickals declined those opportunities and chose Allen
Both Jason and Sandy secured faculty positions with good pay and Sandy was happy to coach girls’ basketball
was only going to teach science; he was not going to coach wrestling
as a coach and as a dad who was trying to develop his son into a wrestler,” says Jason
“And I felt like I had devoted too much of my time and energy towards that
I wasn’t spending enough time taking care of my wife and my three daughters
the head wrestling coach invited Jason to take a flexible role as an assistant coach
He promised that Jason wouldn’t need to attend every practice and that he could always attend soccer or basketball games that involved his three daughters.
But my perspective had changed because I wasn’t the head guy any more
The awareness that I wasn’t spending quality time with my daughters or my wife was life-changing for me
the Nickal girls also thrived and today Jordan is finishing chiropractic school at Parker University in Dallas; Lexi is a marketing professional for Fort Lauderdale United F.C.
a women’s professional soccer team; and Shelby is playing professional soccer in Australia.
the Nickal family connection to local wrestling began when Bo chose to wrestle for Penn State
the tie was foreshadowed years earlier.
“we followed wrestling very closely at all levels—high school
I asked him if he wanted to go with me to the U.S
and I’m going to bring this.’ So he grabs his Wheaties box that had a picture of Cael on it
Chances are you’re not going to get the opportunity for Cael to sign it.’
landing at something like midnight or 1 a.m
You’ll never believe who’s standing there at the carousel—Cael Sanderson
that was a God move.’ What were the odds we’d see Cael in our first 20 minutes in Las Vegas
About 10 years after the signing of the Wheaties box
Bo was being recruited by top collegiate wrestling programs
Not only had he won three Texas state championships
but he captured USA Wrestling’s Triple Crown (folkstyle
freestyle and Greco Roman national titles in the same year) and placed fifth at the 2013 U17 Freestyle World Championships
Iowa and Ohio State came calling—but for some reason
“Bo was holding out (for Penn State) because
Penn State reached out with some interest but not to the extent of other schools
‘If you come here; you’re not going to have to pay for anything.’
and as we were driving away from State College
I think I know where I want to go to school
If I want to be the best wrestler that I can be
the only place where that’s going to happen is Penn State.’
OK. We’ve got some figuring out to do because they’re the only ones that haven’t offered you a full ride
and it’s about $40,000 out-of-state tuition per year.’ So he committed to Penn State
and then he didn’t have to worry about it for the rest of his career.”
So how did all this rasslin’ look from a mom’s point of view
Sandy knew nothing about the sport until she married Jason
she had played basketball at San Diego State and still coaches hoops (including this year’s ninth grade girls team at State High).
Some moms are fearful that their sons might be seriously injured
Others fret that little Johnny might suffer inner angst from defeat
She loved this new sport from the get-go and even engaged in some women’s competition
her knowledge grew so quickly that Jason confidently installed her as the junior high boys’ coach when he was the varsity coach in Torrington
Why was Sandy so well-suited to be a wrestling coach’s wife and a wrestler’s mother
Maybe because she grew up on a 500-acre ranch in Colorado where no job was too hard and no chore was beneath one’s dignity
Maybe because her sport of basketball is actually much rougher than most people realize
Or maybe because she’s been blessed with a powerful faith that says God means business when he claims to take care of his children
“we were pretty poor when I was growing up
But it was always instilled in us that God’s going to provide
“There’s been so many occasions where we lost something of value—a wallet
‘Let’s just pray about it.’ I could probably think of a dozen times where we’ve done that and God has taken us to whatever we were looking for.”
Wyoming for the state’s junior wrestling tournament and Bo
the tournament officials had presented the bracket sheet to a very excited Bo Nickal as a token of his triumph
Casper is “one of the windiest places on the planet.” And when the family drove to the local mall to get dinner
both sliding doors were opened simultaneously
“The wind gushes through like crazy,” recalls Jason
“and it carries the bracket up 100 or 200 feet in the air
“Bo is devastated because he just won his first state title and the bracket is a big deal
‘Let’s just pray about it and we’ll go look for it.’
‘We’re not going to find it.’ So then we get back in the van and drive to the back side of the mall
There’s a 10-foot chain link fence that runs along the boundary of the mall
This piece of paper is plastered against the fence
And now everybody’s going nuts and cheering
Sandy’s had that faith when the rest of us have not.”
Whether talking about Bo’s heroics or discussing the future at State High
neither Nickal seems totally consumed by the glory of it all
it’s about the journey—from where you start to where you finish
the people we’ve met and the places we’ve lived…it’s been an incredible journey.”
it was inevitable that our conversation touched on two matches between Bo and Ohio State’s Myles Martin
Not just because those matches took place on big stages
but also because they were pivotal in the family’s narrative.
The first big bout took place in 2016 in New York’s Madison Square Garden
was in position to claim an NCAA title by beating Martin
a foe who had lost to him three times that season
But when Bo moved from an underhook to a far knee pick
Martin countered and threw him to his back for a reversal and near fall
The top-seeded Lion could not recover from that six-point move and lost
“He had put everything he had into being the very best wrestler that he could be,” says Jason. “As a redshirt freshman he makes the NCAA finals and wants to be a four-time NCAA champion like his coach
He gets to the finals and loses to an opponent he had pinned two weeks prior in the Big Ten Championships
He had to identify that wrestling is what he does; it’s not who he is
And once he could separate those two things
he became a better human being and a better wrestler.”
In 2017, Nickal went up a weight class to 184 pounds and defeated two-time champion Gabe Dean in the NCAA finals. But that wasn’t quite as dramatic as the 2018 final when Nickal met Myles Martin again
“Not only is this a rematch of the NCAA final that he lost,” notes Jason
“but Penn State needed Bo to win in order to beat Ohio State for the team title
Ohio State wins. And it’s being televised to millions of people on ESPN
So Bo’s getting ready for the match and Cael looks at him and says
there’s no other person I’d rather have step on the mat right now than you.’ So he goes out and does an amazing thing—he pins Myles Martin in the first period
wins the NCAA title and clinches the team title.”
So what can local fans expect to see from the Jason Nickal era of Little Lion wrestling
he’ll make sure his wrestlers have fun.
“so you don’t need a coach to make it even harder on you
And if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing
then you’re never going to be as good as you possibly can be.”
Nickal will continually stress the fundamentals of the sport
and Gary always kept his daily practice plans to make sure nothing critical was left out
Jason still consults his own practice plans from 26 years ago
the ability to wrestle freely without any hesitation.”
“I want our team to be respected as one of the top programs in Pennsylvania
‘That State College team—when they come into our gym
they’re tough kids and they wrestle hard.’”

Portland police raided two stolen car chop shop operations in Happy Valley
(KATU) — Portland police and federal officials raided two chop shops in Happy Valley near the Multnomah County line on Monday
According to Deputy District Attorney Cody Linderholm
one shop may have been linked to hundreds of stolen cars
Linderholm said a car stolen from a different county led them to the specific operation off Southeast 172nd Avenue and Huckleberry Street
He said his team tracked the vehicle and it eventually made its way to the shop they had been tracking
The District Attorney's Office tells KATU it plans to hold the people involved accountable
we are going to prosecute you," Linderholm said
This is people's transportation to go to the doctor
Linderholm said over the last 18 months their main focus has been prolific offenders
He said there is proof those crime rates are going down

Penn State alumna and Happy Valley native Allison Snyder has always been a dog person
she understands that canines are more than just pets; they are family
In 2020, Snyder’s love for dogs inspired her to become a “premium” breeder, starting her own company, Happy Valley Doodles
Located a short drive from Penn State’s campus
Snyder’s passion for her animals and her first-class practices are what set the business apart
the dogs and puppies of Happy Valley Doodles are treated as family members
Whether it’s spending their time in the living room
their bedroom or going on golf cart rides around the property
all of the dogs live and socialize with Snyder and get to be a part of her everyday life
“I think when you do something that comes from your heart
Snyder continues to keep in touch with the dogs she has raised and their families
one of her favorite parts about her work with Happy Valley Doodles has been the annual “Doodle Romp” in her backyard
Snyder and her family have been able to reconnect with all of the Bernedoodle and Goldendoodle puppies that have found homes across the country through this yearly reunion
While Snyder continues to be rewarded by helping find her furry friends forever homes
she experiences perhaps even more gratification through work with her therapy dogs
Lucy and Paisley are two of the three “mamas” at Happy Valley Doodles and are Snyder’s own pets
Snyder decided to give back to the community and train them to become therapy dogs
Snyder has taken the two dogs to different events and volunteer services through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, but bringing Lucy and Paisley to the school where she works has brought the most joy to both her and the community at large
Snyder settled into life as a school nurse in the State College Area School District
she will drive Lucy and Paisley to Park Forest Middle School to socialize with students and brighten their day
“There’s a lot of mental health problems now
“A lot of kids come [into the nurse’s office]
wellness and stress relief of the students and staff.”
The dogs have also served as a boost of social confidence for the kids
reading in front of their peers brings on a lot of nervous emotions
Learning support teachers at the school have used Lucy and Paisley to help combat this
as the kids have read one-on-one to the dogs to hone their speaking skills
Seeing Snyder’s pooches help others is one of the things she loves most about her job
“They are so good with the kids,” Snyder said
The temperament of the dogs at Happy Valley Doodles is truly something special
so much so that United Disabilities Services has partnered with the company because of the positive impression the puppies have made
the UDS takes one pup and trains it to become a service dog
These dogs will grow up to help people with intense medical demands.
Snyder also rescued a dog named Esme after her owner passed away due to a terminal illness
Continuing with Happy Valley Doodles’ mission of giving back
it was Esme’s former owner’s wish to breed her and give her puppies to charity
Snyder partnered with Humane Pennsylvania and blessed the animal welfare organization with Esme’s litter.
From a central Pennsylvania girl who loved dogs to a small-business manager
Snyder is combining her passions to pursue something she adores
Happy Valley Doodles marched in the Penn State Homecoming Parade this past year and will continue to get involved in the local community
helping the lives of people and dogs across the county
“I just feel like I’m living my best life,” Snyder said
Those interested in taking home a puppy of their own, or who have inquiries about therapy dog services or events, can find Happy Valley Doodles online at happyvalleydoodlespa.com or on Instagram @happy_valleydoodles

Bronagh Waugh plays DI Shona Sinclair in the new Disney Plus thriller
New Disney Plus thriller series The Stolen Girl follows an international manhunt which begins after a young girl is kidnapped from a sleepover with a new schoolfriend
Denise Gough and Jim Sturgess play the girl's parents
while Holliday Grainger plays the kidnapper and Ambika Mod plays investigative journalist Selma
Heading up the British investigation is Shona
Now, Waugh has revealed that she worked with police consultant Lisa Farrand on the series, with Farrand being an ex-DI and a schoolfriend of Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright
Farrand formed part of the basis for Sarah Lancashire's famous police officer in that series
\"A big appeal of this project for me was working with the police consultant
who Sarah Lancashire's character in Happy Valley was based on
\"I have wanted to work with her for a number of years
She continued: \"It was a thrill for me to have that insider knowledge – even down to the suit Shona wore
'It would be a Next suit; it would be high street
And you're often a bit unbuttoned or pulled out because you're overworked and working double shifts.'
\"There were loads of small details I could take on board to make Shona more truthful
I was constantly looking across the room to see if Lisa was happy
also revealed what she learned working on The Stolen Girl
highlighting the international element of the investigation and the hunt for the missing girl
\"There was an international element to this role which was slightly different – learning how Europol liaise with the British police,\" she explained
\"There is a huge bureaucratic process of paperwork and that made me understand the frustration the family might feel towards how slowly things move
why they maybe rely a bit more heavily on Selma
who doesn't need to ask for help or permission from anyone
It must be a big bug bear for people in Shona's role

Fire crews and law enforcement on Monday were investigating the cause of a Happy Valley fire where a body was found on Thanksgiving Day inside a building that was "extensively damaged" by flames
Fire crews were called to the blaze at about 11 a.m
Thursday in the area of Olinda Road and Olive Street in Happy Valley and discovered an "outbuilding that had been extensively damaged by fire over a prolonged period," according to the Shasta County Arson Task Force
Crews discovered human remains in the structure while fighting the fire and that "most of the structural components and contents were heavily consumed by the fire," the task force said
The fire appears accidental and not suspicious
The identity of the victim was not released Monday
