Pat Fahy (D-Albany) is thrilled by the $400 million for the revitalization of downtown Albany that Gov
Kathy Hochul has said will remain in the enacted state budget
But another development plan remains on Fahy’s to-do list
Only this one hasn’t received the same attention from the governor
The first-term senator and other Capital Region legislators are sponsoring a bill to overhaul seven acres of the Wadsworth Lab on the Harriman State Office Campus in Albany
The proposal would require a mixture of housing
Fahy told Capital Tonight that she hopes any new design “gets us out of the 1960s” and evolves beyond what she calls “a parking lot district."

This conference presents and discusses the first public findings from a project supported by Columbia’s Harriman Institute and the Carnegie Corporation of New York on “Russia After Putin.” Rather than trying to predict how or when Russian President Vladimir Putin will eventually leave the halls of Kremlin power
our goal is to assess what will happen inside Russia in the aftermath of his inevitable departure
and what the implications will be for Russia and the world
This conference brings together top academic analysts with deep knowledge of particular sectors of the Russian political system
to think extensively about what kinds of actions people from those sectors would likely take to further their own interests and preferences in that future situation—and then to think together about potential interaction effects between those political sectors

Maine (WGME) -- Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey has ruled a trooper was justified he shot and killed a man in Old Orchard Beach in July 2024
Maine State Police said 38-year-old Christopher Harriman of Limerick was shot and killed by Trooper Ryan Phillips in Landry's Shop N’ Save parking lot on July 9
after troopers responded to a report that Harriman was in a black Escalade
and making suicidal threats and threats to others at the Kennebunk rest area on the Maine Turnpike
Harriman led them on chase before allegedly pointing a firearm out the window towards officers
He was later found in Landry's Shop N’ Save parking lot in Old Orchard Beach
Maine State Police said officers tried to negotiate with Harriman and convince him to surrender as he stood outside his vehicle
police said Harriman reached in his vehicle
He was then shot and killed by Trooper Phillips
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Harriman died from a single gunshot wound to the upper right side of his back
Harriman threatened officers and was openly hostile towards them
Trooper Phillips reasonably believed Harriman was posing an imminent threat of serious bodily injury or death when he shot him
“All facts and circumstances point to the conclusion that Trooper Phillips reasonably believed he was acting in self-defense and defense of others at the time he used deadly force,” Frey said in a report
Harriman had a criminal record dating back to 2004

she still divides opinion – was she a smart power player
or "shameless" and "repellent"
You could call her by her six names: Pamela Beryl Digby Churchill Hayward Harriman – a British aristocrat who ended up a Washington power player and the US ambassador to France
having touched many famous lives in 20th-Century politics and culture
her father-in-law Winston Churchill engaged her as "his most willing and committed secret weapon" (as a new biography puts it) and during World War Two she wined
winning them over to the British cause against the Nazis
as she interacted with public figures including the Kennedys
Nelson Mandela and Truman Capote – who eventually satirised her in his fiction
More than 27 years have passed since Pamela Harriman suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage while swimming in the pool at Paris's Ritz Hotel
as evidenced by the varied reactions to Sonia Purnell's new biography
Kingmaker: Pamela Harriman's Astonishing Life of Power
the book reads as an appreciation of an influential life lived boldly
Others find it unduly praising of a woman who used sex to advance herself and whose political impact
Born to a cash-strapped baron in 1920, and bred to "marry well", Pamela failed to find a husband during her first London "season" in 1938. Nancy Mitford, the most sharp-tongued of the famous Mitford sisters
described the teenage Pam as a "red-headed bouncing little thing"
Convinced he'd be killed in the war which had just been declared
Purnell writes: "He didn't love her..
but she looked healthy enough to bear his child." Pamela
eager to escape a deathly-dull life with her parents in deepest Dorset
treated her contemptuously before and after she gave birth to baby Winston
But once her father-in-law became prime minister in May 1940
Pamela landed in the room where everything happened
"Nobody ever had a chance to see politics as much from the inside as I did," she said later
Britain at that time stood alone against the Nazi war machine
and Churchill urgently needed transatlantic aid
polling revealed that the US electorate was even less keen than before to join the Allied cause
the royals' favourite photographer) grace the cover of Life
then the US's largest-circulation magazine
He also had his ally Lord Beaverbrook fund a new wardrobe for her
She flattered the first envoy who Roosevelt sent to Britain
And when wealthy Averell Harriman came to London in March 1941 to administer the aid program
the lifeline Churchill so desperately needed
Pamela made a point of getting to know him
After Pamela, then 21, embarked on an affair with the married Harriman, 49, the Prime Minister, eager to learn what Harriman was saying and doing, would debrief Pamela over late-night two-handed card games. Reviewing Kingmaker for The Times
Roger Lewis dismisses the idea that Pamela fed her father-in-law vital intelligence
and describes her as a "a mercenary sex obsessive"
professor of history at the University of Connecticut and author of Roosevelt's Lost Alliances: How Personal Politics Helped Start the Cold War
tells the BBC: "Pamela was a tremendous asset to Churchill given the importance of information in wartime
To think otherwise is to be ignorant of the history
• Inside the English countryside home of Lee Miller
• 'We weren't afraid': Britain on the brink of WW2
• Nine items of clothing that define Britishness
Purnell doesn't dispute Harriman's sexual exploits, recalling in Kingmaker how she became known as "the greatest courtesan of her era". Journalist Harrison Salisbury famously recalled that during World War Two in London, "sex hung in the air like a fog"
So Pamela was hardly unusual in falling into bed with a new partner
though she was probably an outlier in the frequency with which it happened
The (partial) list of her lovers included Edward R Murrow
the CBS broadcaster ("This is London")
who was on General Dwight D Eisenhower's staff
What information Pamela passed on to Churchill – or what he requested she tell the powerful Americans with whom she was intimate – remains unknown
Purnell writes: "Her pillow talk was reaching the ears of leaders and influencing high-level policy on both sides of the Atlantic." In his review
Lewis brands this as "hyperbole"
although it is notable that when Randolph Churchill eventually learned of his wife's adultery with Harriman
he berated his parents for their complicity
These paramours financed her luxurious lifestyle
a successful Broadway and Hollywood producer
to leave his glamorous wife Nancy – nicknamed "Slim" – for her
and relied on him as an escort and confidant – until he went public with their secrets
in part because she was a figure of suspicion in her crowd
to get and keep a man," Leamer tells the BBC
and she turned out to be a terrific wife."
Hayward's career and health declined precipitously in the decade after he married Pamela
who in her best-selling memoir Haywire accused Pamela of absconding with some family jewellery (along with other misdemeanours) acknowledged this
"Pamela had a great gift: she understood the men she loved
That was where she began and ended; it was the only life she had," Hayward wrote
Pamela's journalist neighbour Lally Weymouth saw that she was "miserable"
Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham
and Weymouth urged Pamela to attend in her place
and the two former lovers promptly rekindled their relationship
"It became Washington folklore that Pamela had lobbied for the invitation as a ruse to meet Averell," Purnell writes
the rumours about Pamela were salacious enough for many not to worry whether they were true."
The new Mrs Harriman endured something of a humiliation when Capote's short story La Côte Basque 1965 appeared in Esquire magazine in 1975
with the heartless Lady Ina Coolbirth – a composite figure
elements of whom resembled Harriman – at its centre
But during the final two decades of her life
Pamela became a power player in Washington
she began funding and championing candidates of the Democratic party after Republican Ronald Reagan won a landslide presidential election in 1980
Among her favourites: two future presidents
wrote that the book did not "cope with the peculiar deadness inside such an apparently vital subject
Purnell feels her book's sometimes hostile reception has meant her experiencing "a tiny fraction of what Pamela went through"
Purnell came to like her subject more and more
Perhaps Pamela's life is a kind of Rorschach test
How does the enduring double standard strike you
As Leamer points out: "It's still true: If you sleep with a lot of people and you're a woman you're a 'slut'
but if you're a man you're a 'stud'." And on what terms should you judge a woman from another era
Pamela was clearly attracted to power from an early age and
there was little opportunity then to pursue it on her own
Pamela's own self-assessment is revealing. Speaking to Michael Gross in New York Magazine in 1992, and later quoted in The New York Times, she said: "Basically
I've always said this and I've always believed it
I don't really like to be put forward myself
I was very happy to be the wife of the two husbands I loved."
Kingmaker by Sonia Purnell is published by Penguin Random House. Clare McHugh is the author of the novel, The Romanov Brides

Charlies Williams was among the last to race for the Harriman Cup when Sun Valley Resort was ground zero for ski racing in the United States from the late 1930s to the mid-1970s
headed down Ridge and the mogul run Rock Garden
It screamed past the Roundhouse and down the mogul run Exhibition
which a fearless groomer named Lou Richards had groomed with a Tucker Cat
You made six turns down Exhibition and ended up at the bottom of the mountain near where the bear statue overlooking River Run Lodge stands today
There was a mattress against the lift tower near Rock Garden in case someone hit it coming off Rock Garden
But a few guys earned trips to the hospital by hitting trees
“I became good friends with John-Claude Killy at that race,” he added
“We spoke through a translator.”
was devasted when he heard Sun Valley Resort was going to pause holding World Cup races shortly afterwards
‘Are you kidding?’ Chuck Webb said
‘Don’t do that--we won’t get the races back for 25 years.’ And here we are.”
the last World Cup race held at Sun Valley was in 1977
when Phil Mahre held off Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark and his brother Steve Mahre to win
with World Cup races returning to Sun Valley for the 2025 Audi FIS World Cup Finals
the City of Sun Valley decided to resurrect the Harriman Cup
which was once one of the most coveted skiing trophies in the world
The original Harriman Cup was named after Sun Valley Resort founder W
who also founded the Harriman Cup race to invigorate his newly founded resort with European ski racers
as the Harriman Cup was first awarded in 1937
said Sun Valley City Council President Michelle Griffith
“It was a big deal part of the race circuit around the world
which included the Hahnenkamm and the Lauberhorn,” said Harry Griffith
The City of Sun Valley commissioned two Harriman Cup trophies from the company that makes Heisman trophies and will award them to the fastest male and female downhill racers today
The two will also leave Sun Valley with $20,000 each

ALBANY, N.Y. – Today, New York State Senator Patricia Fahy (D—Albany) was joined by a coalition of more than 75 elected officials, labor unions, community groups, neighborhood associations, developers, and more in sending a letter to Governor Hochul urging the state to include mixed-use commercial
and residential development on the Harriman State Office Campus as part of the state’s $1.7 billion Wadsworth Laboratory consolidation investment
The full letter can be found here.
The letter details previous correspondence, public comment period, and concerns surrounding the final SEQR scoping document was issued that repeatedly ignores all public comments and letters submitted as part of this process
“New York’s $1.7 billion Wadsworth Labs project is the largest state investment in the Harriman Campus since its construction and requiring that acres are set aside for housing and retail space ensures we’re harnessing the full potential of the project in the public’s interest,” said New York State Senator Patricia Fahy
“Our community agrees: redesignating a portion of the 27-acre Wadsworth Project to be used for mixed-use commercial
and residential space will ensure that we’re maximizing the economic development potential of this project on what could now be considered Albany’s uptown ‘Parking Lot District’
this will not impact the footprint of the Wadsworth Lab design nor cause any delay and does not preclude our eagerness to see shovels in the ground as soon as this spring
Ensuring that we’re limiting the number of surface-level parking spaces
reserving dedicated space for new housing stock and small businesses
and reconnecting the Campus with the surrounding neighborhoods must be critical components of this project moving forward
and more to ensure that we’re harnessing the full multiplier effects and potential as part of this transformative project.”
A fisherman rebaits his line while ice fishing on the Harriman Reservoir in Wilmington last week. Police are investigating an explosion that occurred in an ice fishing shanty on Harriman and injured three people over the weekend.
Police believe a propane-fueled heating device used in an ice shanty at the time of a flash fire on Harriman Reservoir may have had a faulty propane cylinder.
WILMINGTON — Police believe a propane-fueled heating device used in an ice shanty at the time of a flash fire on Harriman Reservoir may have had a faulty propane cylinder
but also received new reports of similar incidents in which methane pockets were blamed.
a news release from the Wilmington Police Department states
"also may have contributed to the creation of the flammable vapor cloud in the confined air space of the ice shanty
"Given the information available at the time of the investigation
it was not possible to determine if the flash fire was caused by a propane or methane vapor cloud or if it was a combination of both which resulted in the flash fire," the news release states.
WILMINGTON — Police are investigating an explosion that occurred on Harriman Reservoir and i…
one adult and two children were injured in the fire while ice fishing on Harriman Reservoir
They were "self transported" to a hospital
Police Chief Murano said in a previous interview.
Wilmington Police were contacted by the hospital about the incident at about 11 a.m
according to the new release. Using snowmobiles
officers went to the site from a spot called "the fishing point" off Castle Hill Road
Police contacted a witness who had provided the injured people a ride off the ice to a parked vehicle following the incident
They "learned that this person had witnessed several instances where pockets of methane released through holes in the ice surface were ignited and burned," the news release states.
police also received several phone calls from people providing information about other incidents involving flash burns of methane released through holes in the ice
"These incidents were reportedly witnessed over the last several years during the ice fishing seasons," the news release states
"These incidents had not been reported to the Wilmington Police Department until after this tragic accident had occurred and an investigation was started."
Aiding in the investigation were the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and the Vermont State Police Arson Unit
Police said the two agencies hadn't received any reports of similar incidents.
Several community members have contacted Wilmington Police about safety concerns
requesting signage about dangers or a ban on people going on the ice
"The Wilmington Police Department does not know of any completely safe ways to clear methane pockets from under the ice," the new release states
"Even if ice fishing holes are drilled and given a time lapse to foreseeably clear any methane
it is possible that methane pockets trapped between the ice and water surface can move and shift
This could mean that even once an ice fishing access hole is cleared there is no way to guarantee that a gas pocket could not move under the ice and vent at any time creating a potential hazard."
Wilmington Police recommend anyone ice fishing on Harriman Reservoir "take precautions to not introduce an ignition source especially when utilizing an ice shanty."

MURFREESBORO — Ryan Franks has no hard feelings
The last second of Wayne County's 62-55 win over Harriman in the Class 1A quarterfinals on Wednesday nearly marred the 31 minutes and 59 seconds that had proceeded it
Wayne County junior Justice Bell had no one in front of him as he cruised towards an easy fast-break layup
Harriman senior Ace Jackson shoved him with both hands
and several Wildcats and several Blue Devils ran towards the scene to stick up for their respective teammates with pushing and shoving
remained on the ground in pain for minutes as Wayne County coaches and trainers attended to him
the fireworks didn't start a full-on blaze — players from both teams exchanged hugs and handshakes as Kace Bryant took Bell's place to shoot a pair of free throws after the intentional foul
Some people play their whole career and don't get an opportunity to play here
(Jackson) just got caught up in the moment
"My guys showed a lot of character there at the end
and it doesn't surprise me at all that they handled it the way they did."

nursed an ice pack on his right wrist as he answered questions from reporters in the Murphy Center media room
Junior Cayman Camfield was among those teammates
but I was trying to just back my teammate up," Camfield
"I wasn't gonna let anyone do that without hearing some words from me."
Harriman coach Shay Shannon regretted the incident
saying that the intentional foul is "not who we are."
"He knows better than that," Shannon said of Jackson
and he let his emotion get the best of him."
the Wildcats and Blue Devils both chalked the incident up to a scrappy
hard-fought game between two evenly-matched teams with plenty of mutual respect
Harriman led by three at halftime before Wayne County took control with a 17-2 run in the third quarter
though the Blue Devils rallied to close their deficit to four with 45 seconds to play
not much talking," said Harriman senior Grayson Kreis
I think both teams realized that we were just out to war
and that's what happened at the end of the game."

When Sun Valley Resort was named the host for the 2025 Audi FIS World Cup Alpine Finals March 20-27
those running the City of Sun Valley decided it was time to bring back the Harriman Cup
The Harriman Cup was awarded to those who won the classic Hariman Cup downhill race which was the America’s most prestigious and competitive ski race in the late 1930s
City of Sun Valley officials didn’t skimp when it came to getting the trophies made
turning to the same trophy manufacturer that has been making the Heisman Trophies since 2005
“We began our search for a trophy maker and we quickly thought
‘Who designs the Heisman Trophy?’ ” said City Council President Michelle Griffith
The City of Sun Valley is inviting the community to a Harriman Cup Trophy Unveiling from 4 to 6 p.m
Spectators will have the chance to get their pictures taken with the Harriman Cup Trophy and view other ski heritage items
Pizza and other refreshments will be provided to make the occasion even more festive
made the Sun Valley trophy with a lost wax casting method in which they pour wax into a mold to create a cast
The cast is then filled with molten bronze
Each $5,000 trophy stands about two feet high and weighs perhaps 10 pounds
At the bottom it’s identified as “World Cup Finals-Harriman Cup Winner/2025-City of Sun Valley.”
The somewhat futuristic trophy curls up to reveal a waistline onto which is etched the iconic red Sun Valley barn
Bald Mountain and pine trees in various shades of green with a black train running the remainder of the way around the trophy
which founded Sun Valley and its head Averell Harriman who gave out the Harriman Cup to the winners of Sun Valley’s prestigious race
“We wanted it to be like a World Cup Globe but not an exact replica of a World Cup Globe,” said Griffith
The Harriman Cup was given to the ski racer who had the best combined race scores in downhill and slalom
Ski racers are so specialized now that few excel in both the downhill and slalom
city officials decided to award the trophies to the top male and female downhill racers
The trophies will be delivered to the racers’ homes so they don’t have to lug them home in carry-on baggage
The City of Sun Valley has also made souvenir pins to hand out that say “City of Sun Valley Harriman World Cup 2025” with pictures of Bald Mountain
Both Sun Valley Mayor Peter Hendricks and Griffith have viewed the world-famous Hahnenkamm downhill race in Sun Valley’s sister city of Kitzbuhel
“Ski racing in Europe is very different than the United States,” said Griffith
“It’s THE sport—their Super Bowl.”
thousands of spectators can easily attend the Hahnenkamm
which is the world’s second oldest alpine skiing competition having been held since 1931
because they can take any number of trains to town for the day
That can’t be replicated in Sun Valley because of the resort’s isolation and the lack of train transportation between Sun Valley and other cities
“It’s my guess there’ll be more people watching our races on TV in Europe than here because there’ll be running them in prime time there—dinner time,” she said
That fact that Sun Valley’s World Cup Finals will be more intimate in term of in-person viewers doesn’t mean it’s any less special
“Kitzbuhel wasn’t so huge when it started
We’re honored that the FIS has recognized our ski racing legacy in in Sun Valley and is bringing this to us,” he said
It’s going to be incredible world-class skiers on course
It’s going to be like watching Mickey Mantle hit homers or Brett Favre throw a football 60 yards.”
The designation of Sun Valley Resort as the site of the 2025 World Cup Finals was still a secret in the United States when Griffith attended the Hahnenkamm in January 2024
“They were all congratulating us,” she said
Even as Sun Valey prepares for its Harriman Cup Unveiling on March 12
it is getting ready for its big party on Monday
with the renaming of Festival Meadow to Champions Meadow in honor of the growing number of statues honoring Sun Valley Olympians
Picabo Street will be on hand to see the unveiling of her statue
Street and others whose famous ski images have been cast in bronze
such as 1984 Olympic medalist Christin Cooper and multi-medalist Paralympian Muffy Davis
who won a gold medal in Snowboard Halfpipe at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi
will not be there as she is guiding backcountry snowboard trips in Japan
to make way for Sun Valley’s Wild West Skijoring Invitational
The sport features riders on horseback dragging skiers and snowboarders down a course in which they’re expected to navigate jumps and spear rings
Organizers hope it will be a hit with European visitors who may never have seen such an event before
Professional racers in the open category are expected to gallop 40 miles per hour down the course
There also will be a sport and women’s category
will be followed by live music by Boise’s Prairie Blue
There also will be live music throughout the day

From the Knox County Regional Forensic Center:
a city of Harriman public works crew was bush-hogging tall-grown grass under a power line along Highway 27
the crew found bones next to a Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant located at 1527 South Roane Street
The crew contacted Harriman Police officers
Patrol officers and detectives responded to the scene
the Roane County Medical Examiner was notified of the findings by Detective Kasey Mynatt at 1031
He responded to the scene arriving at 1108
Boduch determined that the bones appeared to be human
He phoned the Regional Forensic Center and discussed this case with investigators Megan Sharpe and Chris Thomas
it was decided that Scott Banning would be dispatched from the Forensic Center to the scene to recover the remains
Boduch photographed the scene with close-ups of the bones and uploaded the photos
Scott Banning and TBI agent Jason Poore were able to recover most of the skeleton

The debris field was also searched and documented by photos
Most of the items had been shredded presumably by the bush hog blades
Part of a backpack and clothing were found along with a NARCAN nasal spray unit
the mower was taken to its garage and placed out of service

That was also when I first became captivated by momentous political events—the campaign of Geraldine Ferraro
who ran with Walter Mondale as the first woman on a major American presidential ticket
also briefly Pamela Hayward) was in her mid-sixties
making a name for herself in the capital of her adopted homeland
Harriman spoke at the 1984 Democratic National Convention
a particularly vocal booster of the Mondale-Ferraro ticket
though she did note that the historic candidacy signaled a new era: “Never again will the highest offices in the land be labelled ‘For Men Only.’”
“Kingmaker” has moments when the story sails along
Purnell’s confident voice and her citations go a long way to create an air of objectivity amidst a complex history that is not without scandal
There is a cinematic quality to the biography
The book’s use of letters reminds the reader of an earlier time
sometimes passed surreptitiously between friends and rivals
Following a young English girl who becomes Winston Churchill’s daughter-in-law at age twenty and the American ambassador to France at age seventy-two
“Kingmaker” is a who’s who of British and American politerati on both sides of the Atlantic
Yet it is also a tale of one woman’s very human search for things that we all crave: comfort
Harriman’s “issues evenings,” first held in March 1981 in the house in Washington she shared with her third husband
were political fundraisers of lore—filled with high-minded discussions of issues and modeled on the Churchill Club salons she had held in the 1940s in London
was to breathe life back into the American Democratic party
the “gathering place for a party in exile,” which in 1992 would rise to power again
who Harriman had befriended shortly before the evenings began
Harriman identified great potential and a kindred spirit; her support of him and their relationship paved the way for her own ultimate triumph—being appointed by then-President Clinton as ambassador in March 1993
To step into this five-hundred-page-plus saga is to open the door to a hothouse of opulence and ambition
of Sturm und Drang that can feel exhausting
Yet as we hurtle toward the 2024 presidential election
a battle that pits the first female vice president against… her opponent… I can think of no better time to pick up the well-told story of one of the twentieth century’s most powerful female kingmakers
“Kingmaker: Pamela Harriman’s Astonishing Life of Power
or residential development of the 27-acre Harriman State Office Campus set aside for the $1.7 billion Wadsworth Public Health Laboratory project
“Redesignating a portion of the 27-acre Wadsworth Project to be used for mixed-use commercial
and residential space will ensure that we’re maximizing the economic development potential of this project on what could now be considered Albany’s uptown ‘Parking Lot District’
As the state seeks to redevelop the Wadsworth Public Health Labs
it should prioritize economic development on the Harriman Campus that can incubate businesses
provide new housing options to help address the local and statewide housing crisis
and collocate workers directly adjacent to the Harriman Campus
the Capital Region’s Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)
called for mixed-use and residential development to complement a redesign of Harriman’s existing transportation grid
unlocking major economic development opportunities
Sixty-three percent of the City of Albany’s properties
including the Harriman State Office Campus
Encouraging spinoff development on these acres can help alleviate Albany’s unique tax burden as the state’s capital city
encouraging greater walkability and multi-modal transportation will reduce the need for additional parking spaces
"The redevelopment of the Harriman Campus offers a unique opportunity to transform the heart of Albany into a vibrant
mixed-use community,” said Assemblymember Gabriella Romero
we can ensure that the $1.7 billion Wadsworth Labs project not only strengthens public health infrastructure but also spurs local economic growth and addresses the housing crisis
This is a chance to create a more walkable
connected neighborhood that benefits residents
I'm proud to push this initiative with Senator Patricia Fahy and Assemblymember John T
which reflects our commitment to building a sustainable future for Albany and its surrounding communities."
"As we embark on the new Wadsworth Public Health Laboratory this year it is time to also consider
without interfering with the construction project
the potential to support this effort by exploring future residential and commercial opportunities,” said Assemblymember John T
which will expand the tax base of Albany by developing land that has been off the tax rolls for generations
should have a heightened focus on collaboration and integration with the neighborhoods surrounding Harriman. Wadsworth Laboratory will be the most advanced research public health lab in the country and will serve as a beacon to attract world-class talent to call Albany and the Capital Region home. That is why we must take this next critical step in the process."
"The City of Albany carries the burden of hosting many acres of tax-exempt parking lots at the Harriman Campus
the Harriman Campus is a black hole that separates neighborhoods -- a sprawling area designed in the 1960s for those who live in the suburbs to commute in and out without ever spending their money or paying taxes to the city in which they work,” said Jackie Gonzales
“If the State is serious about helping to reconnect historically disadvantaged communities
Retaining a campus with no transit-oriented or walkable development means the Harriman Campus remains a black hole to the over 20% of Albany households who do not have access to a car. Developing mixed-use residential
and retail space on the Harriman campus will also help the State attract employees who want to live
talented people are not excited about a life in which they drive to an office campus surrounded by parking lots and then drive back to their home in the suburbs
If the State wants to attract talented people to work at this world-class lab
vibrant communities that cannot exist in a sea of parking lots and single-use development. Senator Fahy's legislation would return underutilized state land to productive development in Albany
connecting communities rather than continuing to divide them."
