Many of the women who accused Weinstein publicly did so years or even decades after the fact, a common phenomenon among survivors of sexual assault both because of the shame associated with the attack and the difficulty of securing a conviction the legal statute of limitations had closed by the time these survivors finally went public The standard of evidence in a criminal court is high for good reason: if you’re going to take someone’s freedom away from them you should be absolutely certain that they committed a crime The eight cases brought against Weinstein represent the eight cases that law enforcement was confident they could prove to that standard The fact that the other 72 or so accusations against Weinstein never resulted in criminal charges doesn’t mean that they’re all false It means they don’t meet the high standards of a courtroom Owens’s second major argument is that Weinstein’s accusers continued to spend time with him and send him flirtatious messages after they say he attacked them She contends that they were acting as “sugar babies,” engaging in a quid pro quo relationship with Weinstein in which they traded sexual favors for his professional support We also know that Weinstein’s machinations didn’t stop with professional retaliation. As publication approached for the two bombshell news articles breaking the story of Weinstein’s decades-long pattern of sexual assault, Weinstein hired private security agencies to collect compromising information on the women who were preparing to accuse them None of the information or context I am laying out here is new All of these revelations were discussed in the press in great detail in the weeks and months after the Weinstein story first broke in October 2017 and then repeated again over the course of his 2020 New York trial and his 2022 Los Angeles trial When Owens performs her “just asking questions” routine about Weinstein That was one of the few benefits of using Harvey Weinstein as a symbol of the worst kind of monster a sexual predator could possibly be It was reductive and a little sensationalist the public’s fascination with Weinstein meant a chance to talk through a few all-too pervasive rape myths It meant a chance to explain why so many women hesitate to come forward and tell their stories why so many women maintain relationships with their attackers and why it’s so hard to get a conviction on a rape case it looked as though if the Me Too movement had accomplished anything outside of a few high-profile arrests it was at least that it educated the public She is asking very old ones and acting as though they weren’t thoroughly answered the first time around That she has been able to do so successfully with Weinstein and find an audience willing and eager to welcome her takes means things could get a lot worse for all the other victims of sexual assault out there: the ones whose attackers don’t have 80 public accusations against them; whose attackers are The informational ecosystem she is building is just one sign that the gains of Me Too are far more ephemeral than we had once hoped Understand the world with a daily explainer plus the most compelling stories of the day the courts must rule in favor of a lawmaker who bullied a high school student Today, Explained podcastMay 4Love on the Spectrum stars call on RFK Jr. to resignTwo cast members of the hit Netflix reality TV show on what the HHS secretary misunderstands about autism. Bubb said "It makes it easier (in Harrison Township) because it's not crossing roads and streams It does make this more complex and more room for mistakes This is a little harder and requires a little more scrutiny." Bubb said the construction on the Harrison Township solar facility is expected to begin this year In August, the commissioners approved a resolution prohibiting development of large-scale solar and wind projects in five Licking County townships that requested the ban The exclusionary zones restricting construction of “large wind and solar facilities” were in Hanover Previously, the commissioners approved exclusionary zones for Liberty and Etna townships Bubb said the commissioners offered remaining townships the opportunity to seek exclusionary zones for wind The residents challenged four of the eight Siting Board standards arguing the board did not adequately determine the probable environmental impacts of the facility its impact on water pollution and whether the facility would “serve the public interest The court said it examined the project’s economic impacts through a “broad lens” and balanced the projected benefits against the potential consequences in determining whether the board acted unreasonably in finding the project was in the public’s interest the board determined that the evidence had shown that Harvey Solar had proved that by creating both construction and operational jobs along with associated earnings and economic output its facility will serve the public interest in compliance with (the law),” DeWine wrote The residents did not show the board acted unreasonably “Because the record demonstrates that the board considered both positive and negative economic impacts in reaching its determination that the facility ‘will serve the public interest It looked even better when Harvey stepped through the doors on Saturday to listen to what the Spitfires had to offer and take part on and off the ice. “I’m just kind of trying to get as much information as I can, seeing which way to lean and trying to pick up everything I can,” said Harvey, who had 47 goals and 95 points in 48 games last season for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 16U team. “Just see what the team’s all about and what team fits me best and which team’s going to get me to the next level.” The Spitfires had 14-of-15 picks in from this year’s OHL Draft along with both selections from OHL U18 Draft in attendance. The only missing piece was sixth-round pick Braden Horton, who has already made a two-year commitment to the U.S. National Team Development Program. However, third-round pick Ty Bergeron was also on hand. A native of Flat Rock, Mich., Bergeron has signed a tender to play in the United States Hockey League for Muskegon next season. Like Harvey, who spent part of the playoffs in the USHL with Waterloo, Bergeron was also looking for more information, but it marked his second visit to the WFCU Centre after catching Game 7 of Windsor’s conference semifinal against Kitchener. “It was wonderful,” Bergeron said of that game. “It was actually like, the rink, was unreal and it was fun being here.” Bergeron had 45 goals and 104 points in 67 games for the Detroit Honeybaked 15’s last season and at six-foot-one and 175 pounds, the 2009-born forward already looks physically mature enough to play in the league. “I’m just trying to take in whatever I can, but I think my game translates really well to this league,” Bergeron said. But Bowler said the weekend event was a pressure campaign for prospects, but merely a chance for players and family to get to know the city and the organization better. “It’s an orientation,” Bowler said. “There’s no real evaluation of athletes. It’s getting to know who and what we are as a program and I always think it’s a productive couple of days when you get a chance to showcase our staff and city.” transmission or republication strictly prohibited This website uses cookies to personalize your content (including ads), and allows us to analyze our traffic. The Broncos capped Day 2 of the NFL Draft by trading back into the third round for a defensive end This story was originally published in 2020 and has been updated with more recent information on Weinstein's legal proceedings This report includes descriptions of sexual assault dark rumors of sexual assault and harassment tailed the Hollywood megaproducer Only in recent years did the allegations gather the heft and momentum that culminated in multiple convictions While scores of women have accused Weinstein of crimes dating back decades — ranging from intimidation to rape — this timeline focuses on the incidents cited in criminal cases against him in Manhattan and Los Angeles Though Weinstein's New York conviction was overturned in spring of 2024 Winter 1993-94: Weinstein allegedly rapes Annabella Sciorra perhaps best known for her Emmy-nominated work on The Sopranos said Weinstein raped her at her Manhattan apartment after an industry dinner only to reappear at her door and force his way inside Summer 2004: Weinstein allegedly forces Lucia Evans to perform oral sex The former aspiring actress Lucia Evans told The New Yorker — in one of a pair of major stories that trained a national spotlight on the allegations against Weinstein — that he had raped her in his office in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood "He forced me to perform oral sex on him," Evans alleged Her account led prosecutors to pursue a criminal sexual act charge against Weinstein 2006: Weinstein allegedly forces himself on Mimi Haley a former production assistant at Weinstein's now-bankrupt production company says that after inviting her to his New York City home pulled out her tampon and forcibly performed oral sex on her "No woman should have to be subjected to this type of unacceptable abuse," she said in 2017 A 'no' is a 'no,' regardless of the circumstances — and I told Harvey 'no.' " Haley's claim was included in charges against Weinstein filed in 2018 and she went on to testify in his 2020 trial in Manhattan These alleged incidents prompted Los Angeles prosecutors to file four charges against Weinstein in 2020: one felony count each of forcible rape sexual penetration by use of force and sexual battery by restraint "On Feb. 18, 2013, Weinstein allegedly went to a hotel and raped a woman after pushing his way inside her room," the office of Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey explained in 2020 the defendant is accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a hotel suite in Beverly Hills." For a long time, few details had been released about this allegation, which prompted two of the charges Weinstein was tried for in New York in 2020: first- and third-degree rape. Indeed, it was not until the trial's opening statements that prosecutors released the name of the alleged victim, Jessica Mann, and the details of her story had attended several industry events with Weinstein and endured increasingly aggressive sexual advances — including one incident in which Mann says Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her on March 18 — one month after the alleged incidents in Los Angeles — that Mann says she tried to confront Weinstein at a hotel in Midtown Manhattan forced her to disrobe and ordered her onto the bed forcing his penis into her vagina," Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Meghan Hast told jurors in 2020 March 2015: New York DA decides not to prosecute allegation Ambra Battilana Gutierrez, a Filipina-Italian model, reported Weinstein to the New York Police Department for allegedly groping her during a meeting at his Tribeca office in 2015. She says that later she wore a recording device for an arranged meetup at a Manhattan hotel She says it was during that meeting that Weinstein admitted to groping her and sought unsuccessfully to get her to come to his room However, the office of then-Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. decided not to pursue the case, saying at the time that "a criminal charge is not supported." though it's not clear whether that was ever completed 2017: The New York Times publishes allegations While rumors of sexual harassment and assault had long dogged Weinstein — even supplying punchlines at the Oscars — it wasn't until The New York Times and The New Yorker published exposés that the allegations found serious traction The Times' story written by investigative journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey focused on allegations by a series of assistants and actresses Weinstein, in a statement released the same day pledged to take a leave of absence from his production company and acknowledged that "I have a long way to go." "I so respect all women and regret what happened." Weinstein did not admit any wrongdoing 2017: The New Yorker's website publishes more allegations Published just days after the The New York Times article, journalist Ronan Farrow's piece in The New Yorker focused on a slew of other accusations — including the allegation by Lucia Evans that had been added but was later dropped from the list of criminal charges Weinstein faces in New York Oct. 14, 2017: Weinstein is expelled from the Academy In one of the first signs that the reaction to The New York Times and The New Yorker reports represented a sea change complete with real-world implications for Weinstein the Hollywood producer was expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences the influential organization responsible for the Oscars "We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues," the Academy's 54-member Board of Governors explained in a statement after an emergency meeting "but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over." March 19, 2018: The Weinstein Company files for bankruptcy the production company that Weinstein founded with his brother The Weinstein Company declared bankruptcy and sold "substantially all" of its assets to Lantern Capital Partners It also voided the nondisclosure agreements it had reached with Weinstein's accusers May 25, 2018: Weinstein surrenders to police The former Hollywood producer arrived at the New York Police Department's 1st Precinct in Lower Manhattan where he submitted to arrest with droves of journalists looking on It was Harvey Weinstein's first arrest in connection with the sexual assault allegations The same day, then-Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. submitted Weinstein's initial slate of charges: "The defendant is charged with Rape in the First and Third Degrees as well as Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree for forcible sexual acts against two women in 2013 and 2004 About a week and a half later, Weinstein plead not guilty to the charges which changed significantly as new information came to light July 2, 2018: Additional charges against Weinstein announced Manhattan District Attorney Vance announced the filing of a superseding grand jury indictment which added charges connected with a third incident in 2006 The new slate included one count of criminal sexual act in the first degree and two counts of predatory sexual assault the most serious charges levied against Weinstein by Manhattan prosecutors Miriam "Mimi" Haley, who was involved in the alleged 2006 incident, had come forward with her story more than half a year earlier saying that during her time working at The Weinstein Company Harvey Weinstein orally forced himself on her inside his New York City home Weinstein plead not guilty to the new charges a week after they were announced 2018: One charge against Weinstein is dismissed dismissed one of the charges against Weinstein after it became clear that investigators didn't properly present certain information to the grand jury Lucia Evans told the grand jury — and The New Yorker — that Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex on him But an unidentified friend of hers had contradicted that account in an interview with a detective saying Evans called it a consensual act in exchange for the promise of acting work Prosecutors acknowledged later that the detective "failed to inform" them of "important details" of the interview prior to Evans' grand jury testimony Weinstein's legal team pushed to have the criminal sexual act charge dismissed as a result Weinstein's trial formally opened in Manhattan with more than two weeks devoted to selecting a jury After roughly a year and a half of pretrial wrangling the charges Weinstein faced are as follows: Jan. 6, 2020: Los Angeles prosecutors announce charges of their own The same day that his trial opened in Manhattan Weinstein was hit with new legal woes from the other side of the U.S.: four felony counts of sexual assault filed by Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey The charges are connected with incidents that allegedly happened at local hotels over two nights in February 2013 "We believe the evidence will show that the defendant used his power and influence to gain access to his victims," Lacey says "and then commit violent crimes against them." 2020: Manhattan jury finds Weinstein guilty in mixed verdict After about five days of deliberations, jurors convicted the former producer of two of the five counts he faced — third-degree rape and a first-degree criminal sexual act — but acquitted him of the most serious charges He did not visibly react as the verdict was read but repeatedly told his attorneys afterward: "I'm innocent the criminal sexual act is the more serious carrying a sentence of at least five years in prison and a maximum of more than two decades was rerouted to a nearby hospital after he experienced chest pains and high blood pressure 2020: Weinstein receives 23-year prison sentence in New York  The sentence handed down in a Manhattan courtroom included 20 years for first-degree criminal sexual act and three years for third-degree rape — nearly the maximum allowed under New York state law and they were heard," Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr said in a statement after the sentencing hearing "Their words took down a predator and put him behind bars and gave hope to survivors of sexual violence all across the world." October 2022: Trial in Los Angeles begins  The former movie mogul faced rape and sexual assault charges in front of a jury of nine men and three women at a Los Angeles court house The former movie mogul was charged with raping and sexually assaulting four women between 2004 to 2013 December 2022: Weinstein found guilty in mixed verdict in Los Angeles trial  Weinstein was found guilty of rape forced oral copulation and sexual misconduct – three of seven charges – in his Los Angeles trial "It is time for the kingmaker to be brought to justice," LA County Deputy District Attorney Marlene Martinez said during closing arguments of the trial Weinstein's convictions hinged on allegations from one of four accusers (The jury ruled Weinstein was not guilty on one of the remaining charges and couldn't reach a decision on three others.) Four additional charges were dismissed Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years behind bars by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lisa Lench to be served consecutively after his 23-year sentence in New York Judge Jenny Rivera wrote: "We conclude that the trial court erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes because that testimony served no material non-propensity purpose .. The only evidence against defendant [Weinstein] was the complainants' testimony was to bolster their credibility and diminish defendant's character before the jury." 2024: Weinstein in and out of the hospital  Weinstein was hospitalized at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan upon his return to New York Weinstein was turned over to the city's Department of Correction According to a state spokesperson Weinstein remains in custody because of his Los Angeles conviction and sentence During a hearing in a New York courtroom, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg confirmed his office was putting together a new trial — first planned for the fall of 2024 2024: New York prosecutors signal potential for new indictment Manhattan prosecutors informed Judge Curtis Farber that they may seek a new indictment ahead of Weinstein's upcoming trial Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg confirmed that additional survivors had come forward with assault claims and may be willing to testify 2024: Weinstein's lawyers appeal California conviction  Weinstein's lawyers appealed his California conviction, arguing that evidence was excluded from his trial there, which ended in 2022. 2024: Another New York indictment is announced New York prosecutors announced in a hearing that Weinstein was indicted on additional sex crimes charges after being rushed into emergency heart surgery the weekend prior 2024: Weinstein pleads not guilty to new charge in New York Prosecutors unsealed the indictment, detailing allegations of sexual assault against Weinstein in 2006 2025: Jury selection begins in Weinstein's trial in New York In Harvey Weinstein's third trial in just over five years, the disgraced film producer is facing assault allegations from three different women including one whose identity has not yet been revealed Ilya Marritz and Clare Lombardo contributed to this timeline Become an NPR sponsor Harvey is primed to lead a Broncos running back stable featuring 2024 fifth-rounder Audric Estime With a new handpicked weapon to deploy in his offense head coach Sean Payton dished on the implications of the Harvey selection on his incumbent running back room a group sure to have received the team's message “When we’re talking about some of our younger players We’ll see growth in Year 2," Payton said after the draft "We’re excited to see that with these guys we look forward to seeing their development..." To compare the new iteration of the Broncos Payton has assembled a facsimile of his vaunted New Orleans Saints offense Payton's Marques Colston is Courtland Sutton while free-agent acquisition Evan Engram assuming the Jimmy Graham role Harvey steps into the Alvin Kamara or Darren Sproles role but who is the power back Payton can slam between the tackles or in short-yardage situations Only one current Broncos running back checks some of the Ingram boxes so it seems that the initial one-two punch will include him alongside Harvey But regardless of what role each running back assumes the Broncos relish the spirit of competition that will be created this summer by Harvey's arrival "This is one part of making your team better," Payton said "Then you create that high-level competition." Harvey brings a premium draft pedigree to the table but make no mistake; he'll have to sing for his supper Payton is about to make that crystal clear when the Broncos host rookie minicamp and begin holding full team meetings for the offseason training program shortly after "Ultimately—and these guys will hear this from me in two weeks in the team meeting along with the rest of the rookie class—we’re going to go by what we see," Payton said "How you arrived here—this is a process. That invitation to earn a job and a role extends to young veteran running back Chris Evans a former Cincinnati Bengals sixth-rounder whom the Broncos will host for a tryout during rookie minicamp Evans has been in the league since 2021 and brings the experience of 34 career games totaling 277 yards from scrimmage and three total touchdowns across 38 touches The Broncos have a vision for the players acquired this offseason via free agency and the NFL draft Payton feels like this year's draft haul offered the Broncos more "freedom" to maneuver thanks to back-to-back years of good drafting and pro personnel acquisitions within the scope of his regime "As we discussed this group of players there’s a clear vision relative to what we think their strengths are and how they’ll compete in Year 1," Payton said "We’re further along than two years ago.” it would seem that the Broncos' running back depth chart will likely be topped by Harvey and Estime But McLaughlin is loved and respected by Payton and his staff which makes him a near-lock for the roster How Badie and Watson fit remains to be seen But McLaughlin and Badie each have two years of Payton's system under their belts Payton hopes to see a jump in a player's production after at least one year in the system can take some steps forward in the Broncos offense And in the event that there's a failure to launch Harvey offers the Broncos a nice second-round fail-safe as the team's projected starter Heavy emphasis on 'projected.' football game PFF’s Fantasy Football Player Profile series delivers the most in-depth fantasy football analysis available for the 2025 season competition for touches and how teammates and coaching staffs will impact each player's fantasy football outlook Harvey’s numbers as a receiver were generally high throughout his collegiate career but that was mainly due to a fumble and two drops On a small sample of 22 receptions and 31 targets one fumble can make a significant difference in grade which was more than double any other running back A big reason for optimism for Harvey is that there’s an opportunity to play on early downs as well McLaughlin and Estime have surpassed 10 carries just twice in their career Chances are all three will see time on early downs and whoever is playing the best will start playing more snaps we could see Estime get most of the touches McLaughlin is an even smaller back than Harvey but Estime is the clear biggest back of the three the Broncos didn’t use a clear goal-line back last season with snaps at the goal line mirroring snaps in any other normal situation Kamara was selected 67th overall compared to Harvey Kamara was a backup as a rookie and played 44.9% of his team's offensive snaps over the season Kamara finished fourth in fantasy points per game that season with 120 carries and 81 receptions it’s worth remembering that the Broncos' backfield has been very volatile in the past two seasons The person with the most carries one week didn’t help predict who would lead in carries the next There were several times when Payton said someone would see an increased role Their player usage in the preseason was also generally misleading about who would make the roster and who would be starting Harvey will stabilize the backfield so that the past two years won’t matter The Broncos' offensive line is generally more of an asset than a liability with all five starters playing at least 850 snaps and at least 14 of 18 games Denver retained all five linemen for this season Lines generally play better the more snaps they receive together all five players are also at a point in their careers where you wouldn’t expect much more improvement Harvey was arguably the biggest winner in the draft at running back because he landed on a team where his skill set could lead to fantasy stardom A top-10 season is within the realm of possibility if he dominates the passing down role and also averages at least eight carries per game the Broncos' backfield could remain volatile despite the addition of Harvey Miriam Haley testifies as ex-producer faces charges involving two women from original trial The first of three accusers expected to testify at Harvey Weinstein’s rape retrial took the witness stand on Tuesday reprising her testimony from his first #MeToo trial five years ago Miriam Haley, a former TV and movie production assistant, alleges that the former movie mogul forcibly performed oral sex on her at his New York City apartment in 2006 who inherited the case from his predecessor watched from the courtroom gallery as Haley testified Haley began by speaking about her hard upbringing in Finland and Sweden her interest in the performing arts and her entry into the movie business as an assistant to the late Rocky Horror Picture Show producer Michael White Haley is on the witness stand at the start of the second week of testimony in Weinstein’s retrial who said she told them about the alleged assault Haley initially expressed some reluctance to testify again after a New York appeals court last year overturned Weinstein’s landmark conviction and ordered a new trial The state’s court of appeals threw out Weinstein’s convictions and 23-year prison sentence and ordered a new trial after finding that the original one was tainted by “egregious” judicial rulings and prejudicial testimony Haley did not look at Weinstein as she entered the courtroom through a side door and walked swiftly to the witness stand but was compelled to when a prosecutor asked her to point him out in court looked at her as she passed by and again as she identified him from the stand In a sign of how hard-fought Haley’s testimony is likely to be she had barely started answering a prosecutor’s questions when Weinstein’s attorneys objected to queries about physical abuse that she says she suffered as a child and her voice caught briefly afterward before she composed herself Weinstein’s lawyers objected to similar questions at his first trial and were mostly overruled without much discussion they’re redoubling their efforts to peel away outer layers of testimony that they say is irrelevant or likely to confuse jurors faces charges involving two women from his original trial in 2020: one count of criminal sex act in connection with Haley’s allegations and one count of third-degree rape for allegedly assaulting then-aspiring actor Jessica Mann in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013 He’s also being tried for the first time on an allegation from Kaja Sokola a former model who wasn’t a part of the first case Weinstein is charged with one count of criminal sex act for allegedly forcing oral sex on Sokola at a Manhattan hotel in 2006 Mann and Sokola are also expected to testify Weinstein has pleaded not guilty and denies that he raped or sexually assaulted anyone Haley’s former roommate who also testified at the first trial said a shaken Haley told her that month that Weinstein had forcibly performed oral sex on her Entin said she suggested Haley call a lawyer said she advised a “distraught” Haley not to go to the police when she made a similar disclosure to her in August or September 2006 acknowledged in her earlier testimony that she kept in touch with Weinstein and accepted an made public until today All three were young women when they met the producer All three will describe Weinstein bringing them to hotel rooms Defense attorney Arthur Aidala said what Weinstein had with the women was more like a friends with benefits relationship He said the three accusers' accounts do not add up and he called them "manipulative" and "conniving." Weinstein is charged with two counts of criminal sexual act in the first degree Weinstein's 2020 New York conviction was overturned by an appeals court last year, which concluded that the jury should not have heard what is known under New York law as "Molineux evidence" — evidence from a number of witnesses alleging sexual misconduct that was not included in the indictment Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg then announced he would retry Weinstein with additional testimony from a new witness That witness was revealed in court on Wednesday to be Sokola This trial is a test, then, of prosecutors' ability to persuade a jury of Weinstein's guilt with three women under oath directly accusing him, instead of the six who testified in the first trial Prosecutors are expected to argue that Weinstein exploited his influence in the entertainment business to coerce women into sexual situations against their will They will likely bolster each woman's individual story with testimony from experts on the psychological effects of sexual assault The defense team is expected to seize on any inconsistencies in the three women's accounts jurors were shown emails from Jessica Mann which could be taken to suggest she had a friendly relationship with Weinstein Weinstein was separately convicted of rape and other sex crimes in California in 2022 though he has appealed that conviction as well If he chooses to take the stand in Manhattan in the coming weeks he could be asked by prosecutors about his criminal record The #MeToo movement was catalyzed in part by the many women who came forward to accuse Weinstein of misconduct said last week that the sheer volume of public accusations against the former producer gives this trial added significance "I think it's important that we see justice in this case for all of the women who have come forward against Harvey not just the ones who have had the opportunity to testify against him," Goldbrum said A jury of 12 Manhattanites with six alternates was seated Tuesday after days of questioning from the judge Judge Curtis Farber repeatedly said he wanted a jury that could be fair and impartial given the huge amount of publicity the case has attracted Dozens of prospective jurors were dismissed after raising their hands to indicate they felt could not make a fair and objective judgment because of what they already knew about the case Weinstein is suffering from bone marrow cancer and received emergency heart surgery last year a judge granted his motion to remain at Bellevue hospital for the remainder of the trial where he has been held while awaiting trial Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company (GLDD) is currently conducting dredging and beachfill operations in Harvey Cedars, N.J. While the scope of the retrial is narrower as it will push the courts to reexamine force and evidentiary requirements in sexual violence cases.  the jury acquitted him of first-degree rape—a charge requiring proof of “forcible compulsion”—but convicted him of third-degree rape still require evidence of physical force or resistance to substantiate rape charges effectively ignoring situations where force isn’t overtly applied This framework fails to protect all survivors and does not reflect the realities of sexual violence and power dynamics are often overlooked when evaluating evidence. a first degree rape charge is classified as a class B felony resulting in up to 25 years imprisonment; while a third degree rape charge is classified as a class E felony resulting in up to 4 years imprisonment In judicial structures which effectively require proof of force to convict a perpetrator of rape the focus almost always turns on survivors who end up having to persuade the court that their own actions hadn’t permitted or caused the perpetrator to act as they did.  And in Weinstein’s case specifically the tension between federal and state laws reflects a broader legal challenge While some jurisdictions allow prosecutors to establish patterns of sexual violence through prior bad acts particularly in cases where consent is disputed others reject testimony from witnesses who did not bring the formal charges This legal grey area can work against survivors and fails to account for the realities of serial abuse and the way sexual violence is commonly committed but as repeated behaviors enabled by power justice will remain elusive for far too many Equality Now’s Consent Campaign advocates for laws that define rape based on the absence of consent and genuine willingness rather than the presence of force Such legal reforms are essential to ensure that all non-consensual sexual acts are recognized as crimes regardless of whether physical force is evident. The United States is one of few high-income countries that has yet to adopt any of these international treaties and the lack of centering justice to align with these standards almost always negatively impacts survivors Adopting international human rights standards on sexual violence would align US laws with a global consensus that prioritizes the protection of survivors and the prosecution of perpetrators It would also send a powerful message that sexual violence will not be tolerated and that justice systems must evolve to recognize the true nature of consent and coercion. it serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for legal and practice reforms that center on willing consent and provide survivors with the justice they deserve will revisit the charges of sexual assault brought against Weinstein and will identify whether the legal system can operate in a context-led The overturning of Weinstein’s conviction has already sent a chilling message to many survivors about the fragility of even hard-won legal victories The current justice system must work harder to protect survivors and ensure it is delivering justice in all cases.  To discover more on how to end sexual violence globally, sign up for our Strengthening Justice Series a curated journey that takes subscribers through the legal and policy dimensions of addressing sexual violence NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" crew selected a group of players they can't wait to see with their new team — and one of the newest Broncos made the list who spent a stint with the Broncos in 2022 called out second-round pick RJ Harvey as a player he's eager to see hit the field "I absolutely love this guy," Edmonds said let me tell you something right now: Get your Kool-Aid ready because this brother is bringing the juice." Hopefully the strain is as mild as initially believed, because the 30-year-old Harvey had started the season looking exactly like the high-leverage reliever the Royals thought they were getting last July, when they acquired him in a Trade Deadline deal with the Nationals Harvey only threw 5 2/3 innings for the Royals before missing the final two months and the postseason with a back injury Harvey had tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings with only one hit and seven strikeouts He’s transformed the back end of the bullpen typically as the first high-leverage reliever out the gate with Lucas Erceg and Carlos Estévez following Harvey when the Royals are tied or have the lead That trio has only allowed one earned run in 17 2/3 innings with 17 strikeouts this year “Especially with the way [Harvey's] tenure with us started a few games [in 2024] and then the back thing that we really couldn’t pinpoint “To be back and throwing the ball well this spring and the early part of the season -- I commented several times on how free and easy it looked and more from the Royals and MLB delivered right to your inbox How this alters the Royals’ bullpen remains to be seen Erceg and Estévez will still be the their main high-leverage arms with Estévez earning the bulk of save opportunities and Erceg appearing in more of a fireman role Righty John Schreiber will likely earn more leverage spots as well as lefties Angel Zerpa and Daniel Lynch IV who hasn’t allowed a run in seven innings this year and has a 27 2/3-inning scoreless streak dating back to last Aug That’s the longest active streak in the Majors and the third-longest streak by a Royals reliever trailing only Wade Davis (31 2/3 innings in 2014) and Kelvin Herrera (31 innings in ‘14) “There’s going to be a lot of determination based on where we are in the batting order what they have on their bench,” Quatraro said “We’re going to mix and match for the sixth and seventh But we still have Erceg and Estévez there in the back end They can be versatile and go one-plus if needed can earn more opportunities if he pitches like he did Friday night with a fastball that hit 98 mph and a tight slider “He’s able to pitch in a lot of different roles
