Automatic Precision Vice President Christopher Bulat
looks at a blueprint with an employee at the company’s Harwood Heights facility
The manufacturing landscape in the United States has changed over the years
but Harwood Heights-based Automatic Precision has stayed in business since 1976 without layoffs or cuts to workers’ hours
The company makes Swiss precision-tuned components
and specializes in connector and electrical contacts made from aluminum
so we service a lot of industries,” company vice president Chris Bulat
and Chris Bulat’s brother John Bulat also works there
Chris Bulat said Automatic Precision manufactures parts for customers in industries such as automotive
The company has 49 employees working three shifts five days a week on 200 machines
Bulat said the company has been around long enough to have employed more than one set of fathers and sons or fathers and daughters
and it typically takes five years for someone to master the craft
“We make things as simple as a shaft in a children’s wind-up toy to as complicated as screws for surgery,” Bulat said
He said about 50% of the raw materials that Automatic Precision uses to manufacture items come from overseas
President Donald Trump imposed 25% tariffs on imported steel and aluminum
which could drive up costs for companies like Automatic Precision
Bulat said he thinks the tariffs will be short-lived — Trump has often changed his tariff policy
sometimes within hours — and that his company has enough inventory to ride out any price hikes
Tools laid out on a table at Automatic Precision’s facility in Harwood Heights
“I haven’t seen any correspondence of any great concern from our suppliers
There seems to be this large fear that everything is going to go up
but the consumer has a choice to buy something or not or to buy it at another time
Some of the tariffs only lasted for a couple days.”
But Bulat said if tariffs on raw materials remain
it’s more likely his company will face cost increases that might have to be passed on to customers
The uncertainty around tariffs and its impact reminds Bulat of when fuel costs rose in 2023 and “panic buying” during the pandemic — all things that
“I think we’re going through some tough times to get to better times,” he said
Bulat and his brother will likely be the last in the family to run the business
He said his three children are pursuing other interests
The company once had people lining up to apply for jobs
but the shift from manufacturing and the focus on college affected recruiting
he foresees a large demand for people with technical skills and thinks more high school students should consider trade schools
“I would very strongly suggest that kids who are mechanically inclined look into trade schools,” he said
“There are a large group of highly skilled individuals who will be retiring soon
the average electrician or plumber will be paid like doctors.”

Ukrainian refugee Vasyl Zhytynskyi plays S.T.A.L.K.E.R
2: Heart of Chornobyl in his Harwood Heights home
one of the more memorable games Vasyl Zhytynskyi ever played was a survival horror shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Limited internet access meant the best way to get games was trading and sharing with friends
Installing the game required multiple disks
and it ran poorly on his family’s computer
military security and other foes in a fictionalized version of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site
Friends of his who were too scared to finish parts that were too chilling called him over to step in
I wanted to join the army,” he told the Sun-Times
“But I lost my parents at a really young age
so my family said it would be better for me here.”
2: Heart of Chornobyl was released on PC last month
He said the game brings him back to his elementary school days and helps him when he’s feeling homesick
That backdrop meant the game took on deeper meaning for the company
“We are like a Ukrainian flag that’s still fluttering even though it’s been damaged by wind and missiles,” said Anastasiia Turupalova, an executive at GSC Game World in a documentary about the game’s development
“We became a kind of a symbol having made this game.”
The game opens with a scene from the perspective of the main character
which Zhytynskyi said echoes the reality of living in the besieged country — even the western parts
where he grew up and where his loved ones currently live
“Seeing that introduction is a reminder of what really happens in Ukraine
so many people are losing their homes to Russian drones and missiles,” Zhytynskyi said
“People often say video games are beyond politics
That’s a story many Ukrainians are living right now
There’s always risk a missile will hit your building this time.”
The developers’ dedication to making S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 a Ukrainian game stands out even in the title, where they used the Ukrainian version of the spelling “Chornobyl” instead of the Russian “Chernobyl.” In interviews, they’ve likened its release to Ukrainian athletes bringing Olympic medals home and called it a “love letter to Ukraine.”
Other elements of the game reflect cultural pride
as in-game radio stations play Ukrainian artists and have radio shows talking about Ukrainian food and culture
Zhytynskyi said he’s enjoyed it so much that he started listening to them while he eats dinner
“There are not many games with Ukrainian voice-overs,” Zhytynskyi said
“I just enjoy hearing my own language in the game.”
Zhytynskyi said he appreciates that the game’s choices are in player’s hands
making him stop to think about what he does and immersing him in the game
“Sometimes you just play the game and it feels alive,” Zhytynskyi said
An image of a poppy field in S.T.A.L.K.E.R
It goes beyond just hearing his home language and exploring the environment
Zhytynskyi said he hopes the game’s success will spark an interest in those outside Ukraine to learn about its culture
and possibly help preserve it as the war rages on
“We have our own identity and our own language,” Zhytynskyi said
