A massive gathering of youths in the woods in Westchester turned violent
The large gathering was broken up in the Hillside Woods in Hastings-on-Hudson
The incident happened over the weekend of Saturday
when officers responded to Hillside Woods in Hastings-on-Hudson following reports of a large party and multiple fights
they found approximately 300 youths from Hastings and surrounding villages
the Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department announced
Police worked with Dobbs Ferry Police and the Westchester County Police Department to disperse the crowd
once the group reached Lefurgy and Edgewood Avenues
the crowd refused to comply with police orders for quiet and continued to engage in various quality-of-life violations in the surrounding areas
Hastings-on-Hudson Police will increase patrols in Hillside Woods and strictly enforce all applicable laws
"The gathering of these events and the lack of respect for the law will not be tolerated,” Chief David A

Hastings-on-Hudson is a 2.9 square mile village in Westchester County
Located in an area of hills on the Hudson River opposite the Palisades cliffs
It is located in the southwest part of the town of Greenburgh
The Village is bordered by the Hudson River to the west
You don’t have to go far from New York City to get a quintessential small-town experience — just 20 miles north
you’ll find a village sitting alongside the Hudson River that has
gone from a quiet patch of farmland to a suburb with decidedly non-suburban vibes
It’s a place where chain stores and big brands have yet to make a mark
but also one where you’ll find more than just a general store and a gas station
It’s welcomed its fair share of New York transplants and managed to keep its character at the same time
bohemian enclave that has touches of the five boroughs mixed in
It’s Hastings-on-Hudson
and it’s one of the best places near NYC to go for an afternoon of lazy sightseeing
Roughly 40 minutes by train on Metro-North from Grand Central Terminal
Hastings-on-Hudson is one of Westchester’s Rivertowns — all villages
Hastings-on-Hudson was incorporated in 1879
when Dutch and English farmers worked the land
Agriculture gradually gave way to stone quarries
including a plant that made paving stones and factories that produced cables
The last of the major waterfront plants closed in the 1970s
leaving behind a town that today is home to just shy of 10,000 people
Most live in the hills east of the train station and the main thoroughfares; those looking for a strenuous hike could do worse than making the trek uphill to the residential neighborhoods and parks along narrow
sticking to Hastings-on-Hudson's two biggest roads: Warburton Avenue and Main Street
which join not far from the train station to form a lively yet relaxed downtown
This is where Hastings-on-Hudson's character shines the brightest
Locally owned stores and restaurants line both Warburton and Main
a liquor store — the commonplace businesses that keep a community functioning
is the mix of bespoke artisanal goods and crunchy alternative options interspersed throughout: home goods and decorative art
There’s an eclecticism to Hastings-on-Hudson's downtown that brings the diversity of New York City immediately to mind
The best example of the village’s meld of small town and big city is smack at the intersection of Warburton and Main: Suburban Renewal (1 Main St)
boasting a spread of furniture and decor from the 19th and 20th centuries so varied and clever that it would make even the hippest New York consignment store take notice
All styles can be found within Suburban Renewal's walls
where 1950s kitsch nestles comfortably alongside oil paintings of Civil War-era ships
You could easily spend an entire afternoon browsing this expertly curated assembly of quality second-hand goods
In a similar vein, just down Main Street is Clockwork Records (24 Main St)
another store that specializes in giving new life to old items
You’ll find both out-of-print and new vinyl releases there
with the store offering a variety of genres ranging from hardcore to prog to jazz to folk
you could easily burn a few hours digging through Clockwork’s well-stocked crates
giving Hastings-on-Hudson a touch of East Village cool
If you’re looking for some local lore, or just want to learn more about the town’s history, including its Revolutionary War prominence, head to the Hastings Historical Society (407 Broadway)
They’ve been open since 1971 and are a treasure trove of local artifacts and knowledge (check out their calendar for special tours and exhibitions
You can also take a self-guided historical walking tour of the village through the society's The Museum In The Streets signs
which note 34 sites of cultural or historical importance in the area
For another historic tour, visit the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, the former home (which they called Ever Rest) of Hudson River School artist Jasper Francis Cropsey and his wife, Maria. There you can walk the grounds and see Cropsey's paintings, writings, and more. Check current information on tours before heading there
the Westchester outpost of Montauk’s acclaimed Harvest on Forest Pond
serving high-end Italian cuisine with riverside views of the Palisades
The best of what Hastings-on-Hudson has to offer in food can be found inside the Moviehouse Mews, a former theater turned into a small shopping gallery: Wild Culture (579 Warburton Ave #5)
a farmers market success story that opened a brick-and-mortar store in 2019
Here you can get handmade sourdough waffles
stuffed with ingredients and drizzled with local honey
The grilled cheese waffle is a funky combination of Gruyere cheese mixed into the sourdough batter
giving you that gooey melted succulence of a grilled cheese in every bite
there’s another stretch worth exploring in Hastings-on-Hudson: the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail
This 26-mile path traces the route of the Croton Aqueduct
which brought fresh water to New York City from the Croton River in the early 19th century
running from the Bronx to Croton-on-Hudson and connecting the Rivertowns along the way
it’s a pleasant way to hop from one village to the next
take the time to enjoy one of its best attributes: its waterfront views
and you’ll see in the distance the Governor Mario M
and you’ll be greeted with the familiar skyline of Manhattan
reminding you just how close Hastings-on-Hudson is to the big city
even as it remains a small town to its core
Hastings-on-Hudson is easy to reach via Metro-North
Simply take a Hudson line train to the village
a ride of about 40–50 minutes from Grand Central Terminal
The station is located by the river and has a small cafe

The Village of Hastings-on-Hudson Board of Trustees unanimously voted Tuesday to reject two controversial gas pipeline projects
Hastings becomes the second municipality to formally oppose Project Maple and the first to oppose Williams Constitution Pipeline since the proposal’s resurfacing from last week’s meeting between President Trump and Governor Hochul at the White House
Hastings officials recognized Hochul’s ability to stop the fossil fuel proposals
The resolution specifically calls on Hochul to block the climate-heating fracked gas pipeline projects
citing dangers the proposals present to resident’s air
Officials maintained the projects would also lead to significant costs to New York taxpayers
who will be footing the bill from increased pipeline construction and an increased flow of gas coming through New York State
Last year, 70 state and local elected officials publicly came out against Project Maple
“We’ve fought and defeated fossil fuel projects like the Danskammer power plant and Williams Constitution pipeline before
Like many of my friends and neighbors in Hastings
I’m horrified by the recent actions of Trump/Musk including their empowering the fossil fuel industry at the expense of our communities and our planet,” said Iris Hiskey Arno
Hastings-on-Hudson resident and Co-chair of the Environment Committee of NYCD16/15 Indivisible
“I’m proud to live in a village that takes a strong stand against threats to our water
and urges our governor to do the same.”
“We applaud the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson for passing a resolution opposing fracked gas pipelines and infrastructure expansions
including Enbridge’s Project Maple and the Constitution Pipeline
New York must stand firm in its rejection of fossil fuel projects,” said Susan Van Dolsen
co-founder of Stop the Algonquin Pipeline Expansion (SAPE)
“We cannot falter in the commitment to renewable energy and Governor Hochul must not cave to Trump’s pro-fossil fuel rhetoric.”
Members of environmental groups United for Clean Energy and Food & Water Watch also applauded Hastings officials for their action
“The Maple and Constitution pipelines would be disastrous for New Yorkers — polluting our air and water while putting hundreds of communities at risk,” said Melissa Hoffmann
Hudson Valley Organizer at Food & Water Watch
“With the White House rolling back climate protections by the day
it’s unthinkable that Governor Hochul would even consider approving these projects
She should take notes from Hastings-on-Hudson’s town leadership
who are showing more backbone than we’ve seen from Albany in far too long.”

is asking the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson to approve plans to construct a mixed-use project at 9-17 Washington Ave.
The property’s owner is Alexander Chang
who also is the managing member of the LLC
The village’s Planning Board expects to spend several months reviewing the project
a mews was a row of stables and coach houses with living quarters above
e a pedestrian pathway with residences on either side often is designed a mews
the former Hastings movie theater was converted into rows of storefronts and renamed Moviehouse Mews
The project would have 20 residential units for sale and one commercial space
There would be 21 underground parking spaces
The new construction would be arranged so that a mews is created in the middle of the townhouse-like units
The mews would be open to the public and would link Washington Avenue through the property to an access stair leading to the village’s Zinsser Commuter Parking Lot by the Metro-North train station
The developer would need an easement from the village to have the public-access stair on village-owned property
It believes the mews layout and public-access stair would provide a public amenity for the neighborhood while enhancing the transit-oriented character of the proposed development
The developer says that while the project normally would be required to provide 35 parking spaces
it believes a variance to allow 21 spaces is appropriate given the transit-oriented character of the proposed development and its proximity to Metro-North
The developer claims that a single assigned parking space per unit can satisfy the parking needs of residents of the development
Three of the units would be priced as affordable housing
The developer said that an analysis found that purchasers of the 17 market rate units would have incomes above $100,000 a year
The development would have one one-bedroom unit
Three of the two-bedroom units would be priced as affordable housing
The units are expected to sell for an average of $915,000
The developer’s analysis found that the project could be expected to have seven school-age children living in it
It was projected that the development could generate $524,057 a year in taxes for the village and $371,325 a year for the school system
It said the cost to educate the additional seven children coming into the school system would be approximately $215,425 a year
Architect Christina Griffin of the Hastings-on-Hudson-based firm CGA Studio told the village’s Planning Board
“The mews is the main theme of the project
This is based on a vision that Alexander Chang gave to us and we took that and developed it
We also have designed this to really fit the scale and character of the street
It has buildings that vary from one-story to five-stories probably because of the (terrain) slope so we have more or less a two-story facade and massing that breaks that.”
Griffin said that the developer hopes to attract a cafe to the commercial space in the proposed development
She said the mews walkway could have textured paving
plantings and perhaps a fountain and would be enjoyed by residents and the public
She said that some of the units would have rooftop decks

The best way to address climate change is to affiliate with
ranked among the 10 most influential intellectuals in the world by MIT
The Hastings-on-Hudson resident shared his views
in Irvington at the latest Climate Talk last week
Rushkoff’s prescription for social change would put power squarely into the hands of ordinary citizens
Entitled “Remaking the Landscape without Remaking People: Towards a New Theory of Change” his comments explored ways to harness what he’s learned about creating change in the 21st century to impact climate change
“We can reduce our consumption by doing more together and making the slow transition from a culture of extraction and competition to one of caring,” said Rushkoff
“and the more we do for and with each other
Last Wednesday’s gathering at the Irvington library
the latest monthly talk convened by the local Green Policy Task force
came days after climate scientists announced that 2024 was the warmest year in history
The global temperature rose by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit (1.5 degrees Celsius) during the calendar year
The Los Angeles bushfires were among the latest calamities believed caused by climate change
Twenty-seven other natural disasters during 2024 in the US alone were linked to a warming planet
Rushkoff believes people can reclaim their “agency” – their impact on wider events – if they follow four steps needed to establish change
“The first step is what one of my students called ‘denaturalizing power,’ which actually means questioning things we accept as givens
rather than as things society has created,” said Rushkoff
to the way we consume were invented by society rather than being things that occur in nature,” he said
That includes the desire to be completely self-sufficient by acquiring more things that can
be shared among a small group to conserve resources
calls for small adjustments in behavior that make cooperation more possible
New ways of doing things become far more effective when a critical mass of people adopt those behaviors
That represents the third step on the change trajectory
you realize you need the participation of other people
and that requires ‘resocializing,’” Rushkoff continued
and finding novel ways to work together can be challenging for people accustomed to disappearing into social media
but such behaviors can yield enormous benefits
“Asking for a favor from a neighbor you may not know well gives them the opportunity to reciprocate
which leads to more interactions,” said Rushkoff
those small cooperative events forge new relationships
and help to “knit the fabric of culture,” Rushkoff contended
“When you ask to borrow a drill from a neighbor instead of buying one
you are engaging in resocializing,” said Rushkoff
In a post-COVID world marked by the so-called “loneliness epidemic,” where people tend to disappear into their social media and personal devices
seeking the help from a stranger can be daunting
But while it may be easier and quicker to buy a new drill rather than approaching someone about borrowing one
it can help break the habits that are increasingly separating people from each other
“We’ve become as bad as any addicts hitting bottom
and we now need to do what any addict does to break the addiction,” he warned
can be enormous when the first three steps for change lead to the fourth and most powerful one; the experience of “awe.”
“These are the elevated moments when you find something greater than yourself; something more,” he said
They can occur “when you’re connected to a larger community or a larger world; when your baby sleeps on your chest; when you discover a hidden lake while hiking the woods,” he says
Or it can result from a new friendship with a neighbor
“The experience of awe actually improves your immune system and makes you feel more generous for days,” said Rushkoff
Despite dire predictions about the planet’s future
“If one percent of the population is proactive in sharing
millions of people can be affected – and it can make an important difference,” said Rushkoff

They were mad as hell and they wanted President Trump to feel it
One of some 1,400 “Hands Off!” protests held simultaneously nationwide on Saturday
the rally in Hastings-on-Hudson more than surpassed the expectations of organizers.
The grounds in front of the Veterans of Foreign Wars building on Warburton Avenue—as well as the sidewalk across the street—were packed with an estimated 1,500 impassioned demonstrators – many carrying signs
platform: an end to the “billionaire takeover” of the federal government; no cuts to Social Security or Medicare; and equal rights for “marginalized” groups such as immigrants and transgender people
protests were organized by a consortium of nearly 200 advocacy groups under the auspices of the liberal activist group Indivisible
The Hastings’ protest was hosted by Concerned Families of Westchester (CFOW)
a local organization founded as a discussion group the day after 9/11
protest was very hands-on in that it featured an open mic
After a few remarks by a handful of scheduled speakers
attendees were able to sign up to take turns making one-minute speeches
Many offered variations of the “Hands-off” template
leading chants such as “Hands off our democracy… healthcare…our freedom…American justice…free speech…” etc
Others advocated for civic involvement: “Sign up for your local school board
The rally was reminiscent of progressive demonstrations going back decades
One speaker led the crowd in a song that evoked the women’s suffrage rallies of 100 years ago: “If they try to shut us up
we’re gonna shut ‘em down/We’re gonna roll the movement on/ “We’re gonna roll right over you.”
A huge boost to the already spirited event came from folk guitarist Steve Siegelbaum
who along with other musicians accompanied the Clearwater Walkabout Chorus in renditions of “This Little Light of Mine” and “We Shall Overcome.”
Plans to end the rally with a march to the post office (another target of proposed budget cuts) were nixed by the Hastings Police
according to CFOW photographer Susan Rutman
which they’d expected to draw about 500 people
whose prior experience with protests had mainly been restricted to groups of about ten demonstrators on Saturdays
reached out to the organizers of the Hands Off
volunteering to host one of the April 5 protests
in turn connected them with other potential protesters with whom they could share details of the event
CFOW had hundreds on its mailing list–just a start for the crowd that would emerge on Saturday
and now the tariffs’ impact on the stock market have mobilized millions of people from very different walks of life,” said Broadhead
Trump and Musk are creating a movement that we could achieve only with great difficulty,” observed Broadhead.” They’re our best organizers.”

Angelina “Angie” Torrisi of Hastings-on-Hudson was born in 1920—the same year the 19th Amendment was ratified
Just a few days before the next presidential election
Torrisi will be celebrating her 104th birthday on Oct
strong relationships have been the key to her long life
but rather the love of family and friends,” Ricciardi said
and always doing something without expecting anything in return.”
Three of Angie’s four brothers fought in World War II – and they all came back
Torrisi married in 1948 and raised three children
died from a heart attack in 1982 shortly after they moved to Hastings-On-Hudson
where she worked at New York Presbyterian’s Neurological Department
and that’s what I believe got her to where she is,” Ricciardi said
Torrisi helped her brothers raise their children
an Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village
“I prefer my own,” Torrisi would joke when comparing their cooking
Some of Torrisi’s staples were manicotti and salami pie
Torrisi continued to make new friends easily
including neighbors decades younger than her
“It’s these friends who have kept her going,” Ricciardi said
She’s the type of person who sits sideways in a chair
Ricciardi also attributes her mother’s longevity to her religious faith and forgiving nature
Some of her trademark expressions include: “Today may not be so good but tomorrow’s going to be a brighter day;” “You can’t change people
Just enjoy today;” “You can disagree but still love each other;” and “Leave it in God’s hands and have faith that you may not know why things are happening

A Hastings-on-Hudson couple pleaded not guilty this week following their indictments in the deaths of a Massachusetts school teacher and her 1-year-old daughter in a fire last fall in the couple's Airbnb rental in Dutchess County
were charged with second-degree manslaughter
accused of recklessly causing the deaths of Shannon Hubbard and her daughter Maggie in the Oct
fire at the home on Clinton Landing Road in Clinton
State police said that an investigation determined that the home "was not properly equipped with functional smoke detectors
The fire was not deliberately set and was believed to have started in a chimney flue
said the Darcys were "absolutely devastated" by what happened
but she suggested the homicide charge was an overreach by prosecutors
"We sharply disagree with the conclusions made by the District Attorney's Office," Gunning said Thursday night
"My clients steadfastly maintain there were smoke detectors in the home and would never have knowingly put another family in danger."
She said the couple regularly stayed in the home with their two children
rented the house and were staying there with Maggie and their 3-year-old son
and Shannon Hubbard was a teacher at Chatham Elementary School in Chatham
The Hubbards smelled smoke while they were on the patio
John Hubbard called 911, while Shannon Hubbard went inside to get their sleeping children. John Hubbard also tried to rescue the children, but was unsuccessful. Firefighters got Shannon Hubbard and the children out of the home, but mother and daughter died from their injuries.
Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi said in a statement that the fire was preventable and that "we must commit to ensuring that no other family faces this same devastating fate."
"The deaths of Shannon Hubbard and her young daughter in this senseless fire serve as a tragic reminder of the critical role smoke detectors play in safeguarding lives," Parisi said
"Their absence was not only a failure of the necessary safety measures; the Grand Jury concluded
the Defendants were aware of and deliberately ignored the significant and unjustifiable risk of death that this absence created."
Dutchess Judge Michael Hayes set bail at $50,000 cash
$100,000 bond or $200,000 partially secured bond
Gunning said her clients were released after posting bail

members of the team wore green t-shirts with yellow lettering that read
They understand that they need to be all in with whatever first-year coach Christopher Crooms is instilling if they are to turn around what has been a losing program
“I want to bring winning back to this town,” said Crooms
Crooms is a former quarterback and wide receiver who gained valuable coaching experience at Mount Vernon at the junior varsity and varsity levels
he understands that the pursuit of excellence requires dedication and grit
“He’s going to bring a lot of heart and intensity
which we kind of lacked last year in practice,” said senior Charlie Richardson
“We’re doing a lot more running and more intense drills.”
Richardson will see time at running back and wide receiver while playing linebacker on defense
Crooms is impressed by how quickly the junior gained a thorough understanding of a playbook that players say is more extensive and offers a better variety of plays than what they relied on in the past
Key seniors are Andrew Tenthoff (wide receiver and cornerback)
Royal Peterson (wide receiver and cornerback) and Nicholas Puoti (right guard and defensive tackle)
The Yellowjackets will have to find a way to compensate for lack of size and experience up front
Puoti is the only senior on the offensive line
The other members of that line are juniors Aidan Curtis and Colin Sexton as well as sophomores Aidan Hansen and Theo Suniewick
Crooms and his staff are being well received
“We all think we can go out there and win games this year
“They are teaching us a lot of things we didn’t know in the past.”
Tenthoff is eager to put the past behind him
“But when you’re surrounded by guys this special and this confident
you’ve got to have faith for the next year and the next game.”
Crooms has one eye on the present and one on the future
He understands the importance of building a strong youth program so that players will already have a strong foundation in the game when they begin their high school careers
The Yellowjackets hope this year can set the tone for future success
“I really do hope it’s a turning point,” Puoti said
“I can see these kids having a bright future
I can see us doing great next season and for years to come.”

Rubino worked in the Hastings district for more than three decades and was the department chair and elementary and middle school band leader for several years
He allegedly took the student behind the curtains of the high school auditorium on June 10

He also tried to kiss the student on the lips
The DA's Office did not identify the victim's age or gender
The student immediately reported what happened to another teacher
Village police were notified and the case was referred to the DA's Office

Two former officials of the Greenburgh-Graham school district for at-risk students pleaded not guilty Wednesday
to elevated charges in an alleged scheme that used more than $50,000 in district funds for personal expenses including luxury handbags and private school fees for relatives
the former superintendent who made over $300,000 annually at the school district in Hastings-on-Hudson
were arrested in May 2024 following a joint investigation by the state Comptroller's Office and the Westchester District Attorney's Office
"Any theft of public funds represents a fundamental breach of public trust,” District Attorney Susan Cacace said in a statement
“That breach is amplified when the allegations concern an institution serving our most vulnerable
The funds in this case that were allegedly diverted to the defendants could have been used for student achievement."

The probe by the comptroller's Division of Investigations began after the fraud was suspected during a routine audit of the school district

If ever there was a classic story of immigration and the American Dream
she immigrated to New York from Montenegro in the 1980s with a backpack
Today the hairdresser and pastry chef is the owner of Aromë Caffé & Patisserie (pronounced “ah roam”)
which opened in Hastings-on-Hudson Thursday
It combines two of Gjelaj’s loves – Hastings
But getting there required surmounting a number of challenges
Gjelaj (pronounced “jay lie”) first worked as a house cleaner and with her family in the culinary field in Westchester County while she raised her children and put herself through beauty school
She gained experience in the restaurant business at Ciao in Eastchester in the early 1990s under brother Zef Gjelaj
She continued on the dual tracks of hospitality and beauty as she raised the money to purchase Salon Chou Chou in Hastings
She attended the former French Culinary Institute at night with the idea of becoming a pastry chef while running the salon by day
She also worked and trained with pastry chefs Antonio Bachour
Gianulca Fusto and Sabrina Mancin in Dubai
Gjelaj reunited with her brother to buy One if by Land
touted as the most romantic restaurant in New York City
There she served as co-owner with him and executive pastry chef for the next 10 years
Now Gjelaj goes back and forth between Aromë and Salon Chou Chou
– creating confections at times; styling hair at others
Aromë Caffé & Patisserie is at 10 Main St. in Hastings-on-Hudson. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For more, visit https://aromepatisserie.com/

In an age when many student-athletes specialize in one sport in high school
He was a young man for all seasons before his recent graduation from Hastings High School
205-pound Capuano competed for five years in basketball (he made the varsity as a precocious eighth-grader)
And that was a whole lot of running and pounding
“I enjoy being able to say I played all three sports for a long period of time.”
Why not specialize with the hope of maximizing his talent in one sport
“I never really felt a reason to specialize because I wasn’t set on what my best sport was,” he explained
It all worked out in the end because Division 3 Wesleyan University was among a number of schools that recruited him to play football
He quickly committed to Wesleyan when the opportunity presented itself early in his senior season
“I was talking to a few schools,” Capuano recounted
“Wesleyan was the first school to offer me and it made the most sense to me
It was pretty much my top choice other than a reach for Division 1
Other Hastings athletes who are committed to competing at the next level are Luke Ciszewski
Division 2 University of New Haven); Oliver Faranda
Capuano played tight end and outside linebacker at Hastings
The Cardinals recruited him as a tight end
His days of playing organized basketball – he finished with 1,150 points as a Yellow Jackets power forward – and baseball are over
“I would say I enjoy football the most,” he said
“The level of physicality in football is very exciting to me
Capuano prides himself on his elusiveness
You can do so much on a football field,” he said
“It gives me a lot of free rein to do what I can do.”
He closed his Hastings career with 95 receptions and 1,750 yards
He notched 26 running touchdowns and threw for another score
He also made things happen defensively with 130 tackles and four interceptions
“I would say my hands are pretty solid and I’m very good after the catch,” he said
“I gain a lot more yards with my physicality and speed that people don’t expect me to have
but I do like to run over people when the time comes.”
Capuano was a three-time captain in football
He displayed great leadership when he was sidelined for most of his junior season due to a surgically repaired torn labrum that required longer to heal than expected
he remained the best teammate he could be during a poor season by essentially becoming one of the coaches
As difficult as the injury and rehabilitation were to deal with
“It made me realize how important sports were in my life,” he said
Hastings’ immense loss will surely turn into Wesleyan’s great gain

Loving the enchantments of the city but understanding its limitations for family life
the couple earnestly began investigating places to live that would be more suitable for the next phase of their evolving lives
their quest ended when walking the streets of Hastings-on-Hudson—they were enamored
it was a natural progression to get involved with the local art scene,” Ward told The Hudson Independent
“It’s through this community that I found out that there was a co-op gallery.”
“Professional Human,” which runs from October 3 to October 27
Joining the cooperative as a member in 2013
this marks his fourth solo show at the gallery; however
Ward is taking the audience on both a visual and audio artistic journey
His display consisting of seven oil on canvas portrait pieces
Ward also created an aural accompaniment in the form of an LP consisting of four songs and five spoken word/short stories
The LP will be released digitally and on vinyl
I find that both mediums resonate with audiences
“My abstract paintings have always been about expressing feelings
after graduating from North Staffordshire University in 1990
spent the balance of the decade touring in bands around Europe
was “math rock,” with influences ranging from Nirvana to My Bloody Valentine
“While abstract art conveys emotions in a more free-form manner
I strive for that same emotional impact in my storytelling through music
I see the creative process as the common thread that ties these mediums together,” he shared
it all stems from the same instinct to express and connect
even as the portraits are leading me to explore uncharted territory.”
Ward’s wanderlust led him to New York in 1999
he rediscovered his passion for visual arts
finding solace in sketching and painting his surroundings
while capturing “the essence of the city that never sleeps.” Teaching gigs led to a position working at the Whitney Museum
where he found himself surrounded by “eclectic array of artworks and artists.” The diverse range of styles and techniques on display inspired him
his latest gallery showing is a full circle experience
The first of the seven portraits on display is of Ruth
“The piece quite naturally took on a lot of gravitas
It was almost by accident that I began painting her
but it became an intense experience,” he shared
feels physically heavy because of all the layers and texture—it’s a really powerful piece.”
The second portrait he painted was of their daughter
Bluebell—what he called an intimate and rewarding experience
“It became more about trying to capture something deeper
It’s not just about making a likeness—it’s about understanding the person
and figuring out what makes them unique,” Ward continued
and I’m drawn to those with a certain intensity
or a personality that’s outgoing enough to enjoy the idea of being painted.”
Ward has worked in various mediums—from wire
and acrylic on wood to oil on canvas to the four-track recorder he used to create his stripped down
“I’m constantly reacting against my own past work
I tend to get bored with what I’ve already done
and that pushes me to reassess and figure out what will be interesting to explore next,” he said
and my surroundings play a big role in shaping what I create.”
“I thought it would be amazing to spend a month there
That environment would inspire something new in my work,” he said
When asked to describe his “personal brand
he conceded that the concept makes him uncomfortable
but offered: “I guess it’s is about staying adaptable
not being scared of change or to challenge myself
reacting to both external influences and my own creative evolution
and following those instincts wherever they lead me.”
As Ward looks forward to opening night on October 3
he reflected on his latest hybrid artistic offerings—years in the making
“I realized both the songs and paintings share a similar process—each one captures a feeling
they come from the same creative place,” he told The Hudson Independent
noting that the opening reception of “Professional Human” takes place on Friday October 4 from 5:00 p.m
I added short stories I’d written over the years
to me they are tied together through the same emotional expression.”

Many Lower Hudson Valley locals from communities in Nyack

She said "Musk and Trump are taking away our rights

Members of Indivisible Greenwich were also on hand
shouting "this is what Democracy looks like" while holding a wide yellow banner with the words "NEW YORK SAYS HANDS OFF" painted on its fabric
New Yorker Phyllis Collins said demonstrators were out there "fighting for our rights."
"If we don't do anything its a show of ignorance," Collins said
"It's done— [Trump] is completely out of control
To see this country melt down in such a quick and nauseating way
When I look at these folks you know what I feel
Hundreds lined Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck during a late afternoon rally
braving steady rains and an unseasonable chill
Most held homemade signs for drivers on the busy road to see
Among the many signs: "Keep your filthy hands off our Democracy," "Congress stop the hostile takeover," "Trump turned out dream into a nightmare," "Elon/Trump phone home and get out of my house." Dozens of signs called for "hands off" Social Security
"It feels like we have no means of influence
The guardrails are down and nobody knows what to do."
Zahner's sign said "Hands off health research" because "Our parents
"We want to have a voice in what's going on in our country," said Patrice Fitzpatrick
"Democrats don't have the House or the Senate
they're the ones who will be hurt by what's happening."
Speakers blared the Beatles' "Revolution," John Lennon's "Imagine" and Bob Marley's "Get Up
Stand Up," but it was hardly a raucous crowd
Protesters obeyed police requests to stay out of the road and crossed the busy road only when police said it was ok
There were far more people in their 60s and older than under 40
though some protesters were proud to have their children and grandchildren along
The crowd got a few chants going — "Hey hey ho ho Donald Trump has got to go!" and "The people
will never be divided" — but most commotion was caused by honking cars and trucks
of White Plains echoed the feelings of many
"Coming here is something I can do," she said
I never had to worry about food and things
But I worry about the have-nots and the future."

You found a parking spot and put some coins in the parking meter
sometimes you didn’t have coins handy and you had to go ask for change in a store
Maybe you couldn’t remember what time of the day parking was free
Maybe you forgot how much time you had left on the meter (at least you didn’t have to deal with alternate-side parking
you’d pull into a spot that someone had just left and there was still some time left from when they’d fed the meter
so you could get free parking for 10 or 20 minutes or so
parking apps have taken over in a lot of places – including the Rivertowns and many other areas in Westchester (and beyond)
You don’t have to keep a bunch of loose change in your car (and risk forgetting to lock your car and having someone take the change!)
There’s no going to the bank for rolls of quarters
or trying to buy something that costs $1.25 so you can get 3 quarters
No trying to remember how much time on the meter 75 cents will get you (an hour?
the apps are challenging – even for the technology-savvy
If you’re in a place without a WiFi connection
or try to pay at a parking kiosk with a credit card
(I estimate that 20% of my life is me running late to meet someone at the Good Witch in Hastings)
