Hauppauge relief pitcher Ian Rivera delivers to the plate during a Suffolk League V baseball game against host Half Hollow Hills West on Monday
Ian Rivera was never supposed to take the mound Monday
The senior righthander and the Eagles’ second starter was set to pitch Wednesday
But as Hauppauge’s seven-run lead dwindled to three in the bottom of the fourth inning
Rivera entered with runners on first and third with one out in the fourth
allowing one inherited run to score but escaping further trouble
striking out four and surrendering one earned run
to earn the win as Hauppauge held on for an 8-6 road victory over Half Hollow Hills West in a Suffolk League V baseball game
“He’s a competitor,” Hauppauge coach Josh Gutes said
“He can throw multiple pitches for strikes
He was just going to run around and play centerfield
So to come in that spot – we didn’t even talk about it
So to come in not ready and to do the job he did was just unbelievable.”
I really had to stick with my fastball that first inning
Rivera also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Hauppauge (4-3)
Freshman second baseman Nick Lombardi went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored
and senior catcher Michael Oliveto went 1-for-3 with a double
“I think [Rivera] did a great job,” Oliveto said
“Competed and did what we needed him to do and more.”
Oliveto laced a double on the game’s first pitch
and Hauppauge plated four runs in a first inning that was punctuated by a two-run double by Rivera
The Eagles stretched their lead to 6-0 in the second inning after RBIs by Tucker Brown and Kyle Magill
Oliveto’s third-inning RBI groundout extended Hauppauge’s edge to 7-0
Hills West (6-1) chipped away with three runs in a third inning that featured a double by Alex Casey and singles by Ethan Saintjean and Mike Massa
Casey and Saintjean each had RBI singles in the fourth to cut it to 7-5
Lombardi had an RBI walk in the fifth inning and Hills West’s Christian Rivera had an RBI double in the sixth to bring the score to its final margin
the reigning Long Island Class AA champion
has won four straight after getting swept by East Hampton to open the season
“I love the vibe we have going on with the team.”
Said Oliveto: “The chemistry is just on the next level

owned and operated by Flexible IT in Hauppauge
serves as a way to give back to the community
children and other organizations are welcome to use the rink
NY — One of Hauppauge's best hidden secrets is an ice hockey rink owned by Flexible IT
a technological consulting and advising servicer for small businesses
Flexible Arena is located behind the business
manager of the ice rink and who also works in business development for Flexible IT
What makes Flexible Arena stand out is its availability: The rink is open to all and free for all as long as they sign up with an organization
Seth Belous, Zach's father, and Joseph Saggio, who co-founded Flexible IT
want the rink to serve as an opportunity to give back to the community
with a focus on children and first responders
Those who want to request use of the rink must be part of an organization
school team or a police or fire department
Interested parties can sign up on the Flexible Arena website or through the Instagram page
"The main goal of the rink is to give back to the community — to young children who love playing hockey and first responders who love playing hockey," Zach told Patch
The rink is open to children who want to work on their hockey skills
Many first responders have a hockey team at their station
First responders who play in leagues throughout Long Island and New York City have a place to practice for free at Flexible Arena
The arena also hosts pickup hockey games for adults on weeknights and weekends
it's usually about $30 to go down and do something like that," Zach said
We meet people back there and we network with people back there on a friend level and a business level."
Zach's sister, Jordan, runs a childhood cancer charity named Whip Pediatric Cancer
Zach said he hopes the rink can serve as a platform to fundraise for Whip Pediatric Cancer
as well as causes benefitting first responders
First responders expressed interest in organizing a tournament that would benefit Whip Pediatric Cancer
Zach suggested hosting an additional fundraiser for police departments and firehouses
Another idea Zach had was hosting a hockey jamboree for children 10 and younger
where all money raised would go to Jordan's charity
"We have a poster up in the rink that goes to Whip Pediatric Cancer's site so that they can read more about Whip," Zach said
"The whole goal of the entire rink is to give money back to either Whip or first responders around the community."
Click here to read a Q&A with Whip Pediatric Cancer founder Jordan Belous
Seth Belous and Joseph Saggio met playing collegiate ice hockey at Stony Brook University
They founded Flexible IT together more than 40 years ago
"The rink has been a dream of theirs; not necessarily a goal," Zach said
"Now it's something that kind of came into fruition the past couple of years
Their goal with the rink is not to have it as a public moneymaker."
Flexible Arena opened in 2020 during the heart of the coronavirus pandemic
but the company had trouble picking up traction on it because of natural causes like weather
the Flexible IT team added a roof that allows them to open the arena full-time during the colder weather months
"This is the first year we've been able to run it full time," Zach said
"The rink allows us to do it rain or shine
We have no worries on a day-to-day basis if we're going to be able to allow people to come or not
The arena hosts five ice blocks a day where teams of all age groups from across Long Island can request use of the rink

Berbig and Summer helped plan the Long Island Cares Veterans Resource Fair And Food Distribution
NY — Long Island Cares is set to host its Veterans Resource Fair And Food Distribution at its headquarters in Hauppauge
The event will feature free produce from its farmers market truck
local and national programs and agencies that help veterans
such as the Suffolk County Department of Labor for job hunters; Paws of War; Wounded Warrior Project; New York State Department of Veterans’ Services; LI Veterans Home
PSEG Long Island will hand out free lightbulbs
The event is open to veterans across Long Island
Long Island Cares is only asking veterans to provide proof of service
veteran outreach coordinator of Long Island Cares
were instrumental in coordinating the upcoming event
Berbig said a couple of months have gone into planning the event
which will be the second time Long Island Cares is organizing it
"I am getting very excited leading up to the event," Berbig told Patch
it is important to give back to my brothers and sisters that served our nation and to connect them with services and benefits that they earned."
Summer said working with veterans is "anything but simple or regimented."
Summer said her work with veterans comes in private
individual meetings as opposed to in public or in groups
Discussion ranges from what type of job they want to what obstacles they face in obtaining that job
Obstacles for veterans seeking jobs range from transportation to experience to past felonies or misdemeanors to housing
since there will be vendors to provide information
I may suggest to a client veteran that they speak to a specific vendor for information," she said
this is simply an opportunity to meet and tell that I am available when they are ready to return to work."
Summer's sessions address obstacles that she sees
as well as ones that the veteran identifies
Veteran clients are members of VetsWork for as long as they want or need
meaning some come back years after a first placement
"Helping veterans reintegrate into civilian life is a huge process and a necessary one," Summer said
Among the vendors who will be at this event are at least two that address veteran death by suicide and provide connections to assist
and learning "civilian" talk makes assimilation easier
"We will also have vendors to help them obtain the benefits they are entitled to as a veteran
which give them a bit of help with the costs of daily living," she said
as many do not apply for the financial and medical aid they need
All of our vendors have some connection to the veteran community
Participating organizations and individuals include:
Veterans come with a large set of skills that many civilians either lack or do not consider important
an acclimated veteran is a very hard worker
usually gives more than an employer requires
has outstanding training and leadership skills," she said
"They are serious workers for the most part
but she said she has learned a lot from them
"I am honored that they listen to what I have to say and ask questions
that they are willing to work with me," she said
"And I am honored that some of the veterans I have worked with will refer their friends
I would be happy to discuss some of the non-job related things I do as a member of the LIC Veterans Project staff if you have questions
