Q: Is there any update on Braydon Hawthorne
Is there still a chance we get the number 1 player in WV
A: Things have been kept close to the vest with this one
I get the sense that Hawthorne is headed elsewhere
but I wouldn't completely rule out West Virginia
The Hokies wouldn't have any chance in this battle if it weren't for Chester Frazier
I do know he has a strong relationship with him
and they're doing everything they can to land him
The fact that he's been in contact with Ross Hodge and the new staff is a positive sign
Q: How many more guys do you see Rich Rod adding to the football team
It seems like we keep contacting guys just to have to cut some more lol
Limiting the roster to 105 is not an official ruling just yet
didn't seem too gung-ho about a big one-time cut down to 105
It feels like she wants it to be a multi-year process to reduce the number of cuts
Rich Rod is going to have to send more kids packing
but you'd rather have too many players and be forced to cut than not have enough quality players and get stuck
Q: How is the bball team doing...and how is the progress coming towards high school recruits - tons of ground to make up
I would expect much of the roster to be in place within the next two and a half weeks
I assume that Ross Hodge would like to get his top targets on campus before that period begins
Q: What do you need to see this year to have faith we’ll win against Bama next year
A: My mind has not even thought about Alabama once
it's difficult to know what the makeup of the roster will look like from year to year
Maybe WVU gets a stacked roster and competes nationally in 2026
Or perhaps they get gutted and have to retool
I can't answer this with conviction until this time next year
seeing this team take on the identity of its head coach and playing the style of ball that he preaches daily is what I'm looking for
Q: Any update on ever updating our press box
It’s so outdated and undersized compared to almost every other Power Five stadium in the country
It’s a concrete box eyesore and needs a facelift or to be torn down and replaced
A: The exterior certainly isn't a thing of beauty
There's plenty of space and nothing is falling apart
Comparing it to some of the others I've been in
it's the last thing that needs to be touched
I do agree that a brand new one would be better on the eyes
but the money needs to go more into facilities and to the roster more than ever
I highly doubt they're going to completely redo our view in the sky
similar to what they did with the player posters on the columns of the stadium in the concourse
I know Wren Baker would like to find a way to work it out and patch the gap that exists with the Backyard Brawl
If the SEC goes to nine games in league play
Do they really want to play nine SEC games plus West Virginia
then WVU can attempt to play the game then and move UT Martin to Sept
A lot of moving pieces and not a whole lot of time left to get things shifted around
Q: I mean zero disrespect to Coach(s) or players
We are acquiring a lot of recruits from JUCO/ DII levels etc..
From my "understanding," these leagues are much grittier
*Do you think that Coach(s) are delving into these divisions for not only NIL savings
may have played a few years at a college level
and can potentially gain those years of eligibility back for playing at this level
for the next few years (gaining players that have played at the collegiate level
do you think this influx of new players has the potential to be B12 contenders by 2026
I do think it's certainly a part of the evaluation piece
When you don't have the same financial resources that the big dogs have
you have to find creative ways to land the best talent
Sometimes that's searching for overlooked players or just looking in places those guys aren't looking
Those kids from the lower levels are certainly hungrier because they haven't been given anything
They didn't have the luxury of being able to fly to games
Doing so in year one is a major ask and unfair expectation for the coaching staff

Duke Eyes Versatile Forward to Complete 2025 Class Duke’s interest in Hawthorne emerged in recent weeks as the Blue Devils look to add depth and versatility to their 2025 recruiting haul
Coaches visited the Huntington Prep (W.Va.) product earlier this spring and now have him on campus
Hawthorne’s profile has grown significantly in recent months
Once an unranked name in the national conversation
making him the third-highest undecided player in the class
Though not yet a consensus top-50 prospect
Hawthorne’s trajectory suggests he could be by the time final rankings are released
ACC Rivals Reposition to Stay in ContentionDuke isn’t alone in targeting Hawthorne
Both Virginia Tech and Pitt have recently made staff additions that appear directly tied to his recruitment
a former West Virginia assistant who worked under Darian DeVries and helped recruit Hawthorne before DeVries left for Indiana
who served as Director of Recruiting at West Virginia during that same period
Hawthorne had originally committed to the Mountaineers
but requested and was granted a release from his National Letter of Intent in March after the coaching change
The moves by Virginia Tech and Pitt seem to reflect an effort to reestablish ties and offer continuity during his re-evaluation process
with Duke now hosting him during a crucial stage in his decision-making
Strategic Fit for Duke's Evolving Roster For Duke
Hawthorne represents a potential final piece to an already impressive 2025 class that includes five-star forwards Nikolas Khamenia and Cameron Boozer
The program expects to blend this incoming talent with a mix of returners and experienced transfers
While it’s unclear when Hawthorne plans to make his decision
the trajectory of his recruitment and the investment from multiple ACC programs suggest his commitment will be significant
Whether Duke can leverage this weekend’s visit into a long-term relationship remains to be seen
but it’s clear they’re in a strong position as the landscape shifts
Braydon Hawthorne is on campus for his Duke visit this weekend as at least two other ACC schools are in hot pursuit with possible similar strategies: Virginia Tech
where Mike Young has re-hired Chester Frazier
where Jeff Capel has apparently hired Jay Kuntz
Both were at West Virginia and helped Darian DeVries recruit Hawthorne
his release after DeVries moved to Indiana and presumably
both were hired with at least an eye towards helping with Hawthorne
Frazier was an assistant coach for DeVries while Kuntz was Director of Recruiting for the Mountaineers

HAWTHORNE — An educator with proven experience in another part of Passaic County was hired Tuesday to be the next superintendent of schools
Matthew Mignanelli, the director of secondary education for the Wayne K-12 district
was appointed by the Board of Education at a public meeting in the high school auditorium
who holds a master’s degree in education administration
and who is pursuing a doctorate from Saint Peter’s University
beat out nearly four dozen applicants for the job
The incoming schools chief said he was charmed by the small-town vibe in Hawthorne
“I’m really excited about being part of the community,” he said after the meeting
“It seemed like a really great fit as soon as I met the board.”
He will succeed Richard Spirito, who announced his retirement in December after more than 30 years in the field and a decade as the leader of the local K-12 district
will be paid an initial annual salary of $200,000 under a four-year pact
He will be in charge of a five-school district with an enrollment of just over 2,400 students
a faculty of 268 certificated employees and an operating budget of $57.7 million
were in the front row of seats in the auditorium as trustees voted on the contract
He nodded his head and thanked them for placing their trust in him
He later introduced himself to the principals and other school administrators who were there to meet him
“We look forward to your leadership and the new opportunities that lie ahead,” said Marco Totaro
we’ll continue to build on the strong foundation and great work achieved by Dr
Mignanelli began his career as a social studies teacher at Iona Preparatory, a Catholic school in New Rochelle, New York. He climbed the professional ladder in Wayne for the past 15 years — first, as a high school history teacher before becoming a principal at Schuyler-Colfax Middle School
where he helped to create a TV studio and implement a STEM program
He has been in his current role since December 2020
he is responsible for developing new curricula and overseeing student assessments

A Passaic County man and former tech administrator at a Bergen County library admitted to embezzling more than $3.2 million from a local couple who had hired him as a part-time personal assistant
Charles Gallo previously worked at the Ridgewood Public Library
pleaded guilty in Newark federal court to one count of wire fraud
Gallo began working for the victims in 2018
and opening a line of credit in their names
He also used their credit cards to buy gaming systems
his workplace — the Ridgewood Public Library — and other locations in Passaic and Bergen counties
Gallo made more than $2 million in unauthorized charges using a single web-based payment account linked to the victims’ credit cards
He even used funds from their bank accounts to pay down the balances
The losses totaled more than $3.25 million
Library Director Lorri Steinbacher and Ridgewood Village Manager Keith Kazmark issued a joint statement:
“The Ridgewood Public Library and the Village of Ridgewood have cooperated with all aspects of the US Attorney’s investigation in this matter
We will continue to provide any assistance or information that is requested by investigators
Due to the sensitive nature of this situation and also it being a pending personnel matter

teachers and Alachua County Public School (ACPS) administrators assembled in the school’s auditorium Wednesday morning when the College Board surprised sophomore Melody Watson with a $40,000 academic scholarship
The scholarship is one of two $40,000 scholarships given out nationwide every month by the organization’s BigFuture program

“It means that I’ll be able to attend college and not have to stress over where my finances are going to come from,” Watson said
“I can go through college and pursue my dream career without worries.”
The College Board is an online nonprofit aiming to help students prepare for college
the organization launched the BigFuture program
working to provide resources to simplify college application steps
select colleges from over 3,000 listed in its database and earn scholarships
BigFuture scholarships are available to any high school sophomore, junior or senior who completes the six qualifying steps on BigFuture’s website
applying to colleges and completing the FAFSA
Each time a student completes one of the steps
their name is entered into a monthly drawing for the two $40,000 scholarships or one of the hundreds of $500 scholarships
Additional entries are made if the student’s family income is less than $60,000 or if the student attends a high school where 75% or more of the student body qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.
BigFuture representatives said the process encourages them to go through helpful steps in preparing for college.
After hearing about BigFuture scholarships through TRIO’s Educational Talent Search program at Santa Fe College, staff guided Watson through the application process
TRIO is a federally funded program designed to help income-eligible
veteran and non-traditional college students
Hawthorne Middle/High School is the only ACPS school participating in TRIO
The win came as a complete surprise to Watson
who was originally supposed to be absent on Wednesday for a field trip
The school informed Roberson in early April that she and her daughter and any other family members needed to be at school for a special event
When representatives from the College Board and BigFuture called Watson on stage and presented the scholarship
Roberson said she and Watson’s grandmother
“I almost fell out of the seat,” Roberson said
I started crying and didn’t realize I was crying
Watson—a first-generation college student—said she aims to use the scholarship money to fund a degree from UF to pursue her dream of becoming a travel nurse
She said she hopes it inspires others in her class to strive to do their best
“You should always try to strive for the best
to reach your goals and not let your age or your grade or your peers or anybody prevent you from accomplishing what you want to do,” Watson said
“You should always just take the opportunities presented to you.”

HAWTHORNE — Taxes will go up by 4% for school-related costs next year after the Board of Education had to make an eleventh-hour change to a budget that was already introduced to the public and sent to the county superintendent for approval
Trustees adopted the $57.7 million spending plan this week
but not before they blasted state officials for muddying the process
On March 28, a week after the tentative budget was passed, the K-12 district was notified by the state Department of Education that it could raise taxes by an additional $3.1 million because it was “spending below adequacy.”
Hawthorne was among 281 school systems in New Jersey to qualify for tax levy incentive aid
The state budget included a new allocation of $20 million to fund the program
which motivated districts to further hike taxes in return for extra financial assistance
the program lifted the traditional 2% tax levy cap in place since Gov
But the local school board viewed it as more inconvenient than beneficial
and trustees said they felt conflicted about how to handle it

“It’s a daunting exercise,” trustee Anthony Puluse said at a meeting on April 8
“The state says we can go out and get” $3.1 million
but “we’re not getting it from anyone except Hawthorne taxpayers
This is the state acting like they’re doing us a favor.”
said at a budget hearing Tuesday that the situation was fatiguing for the district administration and his fellow trustees
“The state has to do better,” Clavijo said
“There’s no rhyme or reason as to their formulas and the time crunches that they impose.”
The district was told just hours before the hearing this week that its application for the program was approved
the average homeowner — with property assessed at $381,881 — will see taxes rise by $177.12 for the 2025 school year
The total tax levy is increasing from $43,582,206 to $45,385,346
the district is facing a handful of cutbacks
Schools Superintendent Richard Spirito said staff reductions include an administrative assistant and a full-time custodian
transition planning and treatment for certain youth at risk of school failure
HOPE is an acronym for Hawthorne Opportunity Provides Empowerment
The district cut the same program before this school year, but trustees restored it to the budget when the state allocated nearly $400,000 in additional aid
The budget supports new dual-enrollment classes at the high school
plus new mathematics intervention programs at the elementary schools and at Lincoln Middle School
Things may come to a head soon in the battle for Haydon

Press release from Alachua County Public Schools
– Fifteen-year-old Melody Watson couldn’t understand why she was kept back at school rather than going on a field trip with the rest of her class
She got the answer during a school-wide assembly
when she was surprised with the news that she’d won a $40,000 scholarship
The Hawthorne Middle/High School sophomore is one of just two students nationwide to win the BigFuture scholarship from the College Board this month
The College Board selects the winners from among 10th-
and 12th-grade students who are planning ahead for college and/or careers
Stephanie Tate of the College Board visited Hawthorne to make the announcement in front of hundreds of cheering students in the school’s auditorium
“I won’t have to stress about where the money’s coming from and how I’m going to pay back any loans,” said Melody
“I can just attend college and pursue my dream career without those worries.”
she’s taking advanced courses at Hawthorne Middle/High and is also enrolled part-time at Santa Fe College so that she can earn her Associate of Arts degree at the same time she earns her high school diploma
She then hopes to earn a nursing degree at the University of Florida
“I’ve always wanted to help people and be there for them
and I feel like nursing would be perfect,” said Melody
“I also want to be in an environment where I can work with a group or one-on-one.”
Melody is also involved in the TRIO Educational Talent Search program offered at Hawthorne through Santa Fe College
The program supports students who are striving to be the first in their families to attend college
The program offers college and career guidance
“Melody is an excellent student,” said Lindsey Ragsdale
“She literally personifies everything you want in a student
she is always willing to go above and beyond to do what she needs to do to reach her goals.”
Several of Melody’s family members were on hand for the announcement
although they didn’t know why the school had asked them to be there
Melody’s mother Latoya Robertson said she was both shocked and thrilled when she realized what had happened
who believes Melody’s success will have an impact on her six siblings
“She’s showing them that if you apply yourself
Hawthorne Principal John Green said Melody is very deserving of the scholarship
“She pours a lot into her academic pursuits and is very focused on what she needs to do
She knows education is the pathway to what she wants to accomplish
Absolutely fantastic effort by this student

WV native signed with WVU but requested release from his National Letter of Intent shortly after Darian DeVries bolted for Indiana
Fortunately for new WVU head coach Ross Hodge
Hawthorne is keeping open the option to re-commit to West Virginia and stay home
Since reopening his recruitment, though, several Power Four teams have been in heavy pursuit, including some of the high-profile programs in college basketball. Kentucky, Michigan, Virginia Tech, and several others have been in contact and here recently, Duke stopped by to pay him a visit, according to Travis Branham of CBS Sports
Hawthorne has met with Ross Hodge and some members of West Virginia's new coaching staff
but it remains unclear how much of a shot they have at regaining his pledge
The majority of West Virginia's transfer portal pickups have just one year of eligibility remaining
and the connection he has with Chester Frazier at Virginia Tech would be a massive win for Hodge

I’m pretty sure that Nathaniel Hawthorne is the last thing on the minds of Silicon Valley tech-titans right now
But some of my students think he should be the first
I teach high school English in Silicon Valley
a place that I sometimes (only half-jokingly) refer to as the heart of darkness
My high school is a stone’s throw away from the headquarters of Apple
Techno-optimsim is the water we drink and the air we breathe
It’s hard to resist and it’s hard to explain to outsiders
But my students and I have been reading Nathaniel Hawthorne
and there’s no 19th-century writer more relevant
Hawthorne sets his 1843 tale “The Birth-Mark” in the moment when the “recent discovery of electricity and other kindred mysteries of Nature seemed to open paths into the region of miracle.” Science enables men to “ascend from one step of powerful intelligence to another
until the philosopher should lay his hand on the secret of creative force and perhaps make new worlds for himself.”
it takes my students about 5 seconds to understand that he’s speaking to them
It takes longer for them to figure out why and how
whose discoveries have “roused the admiration of all the learned societies in Europe,” marries Georgiana
only to become obsessed with removing her single imperfection
described by some as a “fairy hand” and by others as a “fatal flaw.” Predictably
“Rapaccinni’s Daughter” tells an adjacent tale of the daughter of another scientific genius
who raises his daughter in his fantastical Edenic garden
on the fumes of a toxic plant that makes her as “terrible as [she is] beautiful.” After the protagonist
the antidote that he procures from Rapaccinni’s rival Baglioni predictably kills her
There are many ways of reading these stories: The only perfect woman is a dead one
Men of science pursue their technologies at the expense of women’s bodies
A parable about the arrogance of scientific authority
A prescient warning about impossible beauty standards
and the corresponding risks of body modification
the most interesting reading comes from considering Hawthorne’s first premise: both men are scientific geniuses
Both want to crack the code of nature’s secrets
Aylmer has “investigated the secrets of the highest cloud region and of the profoundest mines.” Rapaccinni is so driven that “he would sacrifice human life
for the sake of adding so much as a grain of mustard-seed to the great heap of his accumulated knowledge.” In response
Are there many men capable of so spiritual a love of science?”
cutting edge technology advances humankind
which of you wouldn’t protect your daughter from all manner of harm (especially from men) if you could
and more free,” staking out the case that our future must be focused on AI opportunity
because the “AI future is not going to be won by hand-wringing.”
when our government believed it was their job to support
science and technology to wrestle with the questions that Hawthorne asks
Bush convened by executive order the President’s Council on Bioethics
Their first order of business was discussing “The Birth-Mark.”
There was much “shuddering” over the essential horror of the story
fraught talk about how capital corrupts scientific pursuits
and worry over the “arrogance of authority.” Like my students
the council struggled to understand the story’s implications
But what’s most interesting right now is that the Council had the prescience
and the humanity to frame their work in the context of a fiction; that they believed their work was somehow
in conversation with the questions Hawthorne asks
They were willing to have the conversation in the first place
that Hawthorne’s scientists fall (they objectively don’t fail)
At the end of “Rapaccinni’s Daughter,” as Rapaccinni and Giovanni look on Beatrice’s death
And is this the upshot of your experiment?” Rapaccinni’s experiment doesn’t kill Beatrice
The end of “The Birth-Mark” is more confounding
he need not thus have flung away the happiness which would have woven his mortal life of the selfsame texture with the celestial….he failed to look beyond the shadowy scope of time
to find the perfect future in the present.”
How can infinity be found in the finite present
The paradox that Hawthorne urges on Aylmer
is that eternity will only be found in the particularity of the fleeting present
Hawthorne’s narrator suggests the profounder wisdom comes when we recognize that we are bounded by our bodies
that we have only (what Gertrude Stein later describes as) a moment after a moment after a moment
Only by embracing our humanity can we find true wisdom
and that fullest being that Hawthorne refers to as the weaving of “mortal life of the selfsame texture with the celestial.”
human transcendence is not going to be found in any trans-human state
And it’s certainly not going to be found on Mars
Steve Bannon understands
When I asked my students if they thought Musk should read Hawthorne
we need to center the use and development of technologies around the dignity of the human being
tech innovators need to be in rigorous conversation with the best philosophical
Perhaps most important is that we need to keep asking the questions
My students take some comfort in realizing that the worship of technology and the questions it poses are centuries old
the questions are the things that make us most human
And maybe the ones who keep asking these questions
are the ones who will keep showing us the most optimal
And maybe we need to keep reading Hawthorne

Thanks to the transfer portal, Mark Pope is close to completing his 2025-26 roster
But with some roster spots still to toy with
And his search process has led him back to the high school ranks
Kentucky already has a pair of incoming freshmen, Bluegrass natives Jasper Johnson and Malachi Moreno, both considered four-star prospects and top 30 recruits in the country. Another high schooler has popped up on the Wildcats’ radar though: 6-foot-8 wing Braydon Hawthorne
a recent class of 2025 West Virginia decommit who will take an official visit to UK beginning on Wednesday
“Braydon Hawthorne is a unique player. A definite late-bloomer, someone who is already producing on the national stage, but his best basketball is still clearly in front of him,” On3 national analyst Jamie Shaw said of Hawthorne
He can put the ball on the floor in the half-court to self create an opportunity
Here’s what you need to know about Hawthorne before he makes his way to Lexington
That move paid off. Hawthorne established himself as a national recruit, earning three-star status back in the fall. Holding offers from the likes of Ohio, Old Dominion, UMBC, Florida Gulf Coast, Pepperdine, and Mount St. Mary’s, he made a surprise announcement by committing to the home state Mountaineers in October. He became the first 2025 pledge for then-head coach Darian DeVries following a quick recruiting process with WVU.

But once DeVries made the jump to Indiana in March
Hawthorne requested a release from his commitment to West Virginia just three days later
Behind an impressive senior season at Huntington Prep
his shooting ability caught the attention of coaches and scouts
On3 now ranks him as the 48th-best class of 2025 recruit in the country and a four-star prospect
and the new staff at West Virginia have reached out
having first contacted him in the spring through a Zoom call
Hawthorne met with the new coaches at WVU over the weekend and will arrive in Lexington on Wednesday
Official visits to Virginia Tech and Michigan are also in the works
Hawthorne would likely be a development piece in 2025-26 if he were to land at a place like Kentucky
but there is plenty of potential in the late-bloomer

Hodge has primarily built his roster with experienced transfers

and adding Hawthorne to the mix would go a long way in accomplishing that goal

but I hadn’t closed my mind to her presence in the sources I’d consulted while researching her parents’ lives and reconstructing the love story that played a prominent role in my narrative—a romance that seemed surprisingly modern
The Hawthornes met after each had served a solitary apprenticeship of a decade or more in their profession
Nathaniel Hawthorne was among the first American writers of fiction to attempt to make a living by his pen; lack of a steady income was the reason for his three-year secret engagement to Sophia Peabody
the gifted painter who’d won his heart with a sketch of one of his characters
but they considered themselves married from the date of their engagement and addressed each other in passionate love letters as husband and wife
When at last they planned a wedding in July 1842
Nathaniel joked that in performing the ceremony the minister would have to “thrust himself between” them
The Hawthornes were older parents with a penchant for idealizing themselves and the Edenic surroundings into which their first child was born
a veritable “fairy-land” on the banks of the Concord River
“sheltered from the turmoil of life’s ocean,” in Nathaniel’s terms
Sophia had suffered a miscarriage during an otherwise blissful honeymoon year
and she recorded the loss in words etched with the diamond on her wedding ring into a windowpane of the “moss-grown country parsonage” her husband dubbed the “Old Manse,” rented out to them by their near neighbor Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Man’s accidents are God’s purposes.” Una’s arrival during the second year of their marriage must have been by divine intent
Over the objections of friends, who worried the choice was “too imaginative,” the couple adhered to a decision, made before the child’s birth, to name her for the uncommonly virtuous heroine of Edmund Spenser’s epic poem The Faerie Queene
the king’s “onely daughter deare.” Nathaniel agreed there was risk in selecting a name that “has never before been warmed with human life,” but in her first weeks Una’s living presence had given it “a natural warmth,” her father claimed
He expected that “when she has worn it through her lifetime
and perhaps transmitted it to descendants of her own
this beautiful name will have become naturalized on earth;—whereby we shall have done a good deed in first bringing it out of the realm of Faery.”
Yet the months after Una’s birth brought hardship
Sophia nursed her baby and soon also another little girl born that year in Concord to Margaret Fuller’s sister Ellen
Nathaniel’s need for paying work in the form of a political appointment—ultimately
a customs-house job—drove the Hawthornes from their country retreat
They made plans to move to Salem and a house they’d share with Nathaniel’s widowed mother and two unmarried sisters
but only Una had been born during “the calm summer of my heart and mind,” as Nathaniel described the Old Manse years in the introduction to his collection of stories published after the move in hopes of recouping his losses
Sophia left behind a second inscription on a windowpane
marking the former rectory with an indelible image of Una’s infant happiness
I read the delicate tracings myself on the day of the reinterment:
from a book published in the 1950s by the Columbia professor Vernon Loggins called The Hawthornes
Loggins traced the genealogy of the family through seven generations
beginning with Nathaniel’s colonial ancestors and ending with his daughters
a little over three decades after her auspicious birth
Una herself was engaged to a writer of short stories
While visiting Julian’s family at their home on the outskirts of London
Una received word that the tubercular Webster had succumbed to illness on a ship bound for Hawaii
where he’d hoped to regain his health in advance of their wedding
Una’s auburn hair “turned completely white,” Loggins wrote
“and the least physical exertion caused fatigue.” Una left Julian’s house for a rest stay at an Anglican convent near Windsor where
but before he arrived she was no more.”
The story had always seemed improbable to me

LAKELAND — All season, Hawthorne’s boys basketball team heard the murmurs from those throughout Florida
Friday night, as the boys basketball season came to a close, those doubters were sitting at home. Where were the Hornets
Hawthorne boys basketball returned to the mountaintop Friday night at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland with a 59-38 win over Crossroad Academy in the FHSAA rural classification championship
it's Hawthorne's sixth championship across all sports in the last five years
emotions are just all over the place right now," coach Greg Bowie said
Making Crossroad play Hawthorne's gameIn the battle between the Hornets and Scorpions
Hawthorne stung first and did so with an imposing defense
Crossroad shot just 2-6 and turned it over four times in the first quarter
The second wasn’t much kinder to the Scorpions with an astounding nine turnovers on just three shot attempts
Instead of being played on the parquet of the RP Funding Center
the first half felt like it was played in the mud
"It always starts on the defensive end for us
Hawthorne has a reputation for "just running around defensively." Bowie despises that notion
referring to it instead of "organized chaos."
We want guys to not get comfortable dribbling the ball," Bowie said
because most of our guys can defend multiple positions."
Senior Chasion Wilson said Bowie told the team to come out hard on defense
then it is easy offense," Leland Johnson said
Hawthorne did that as it forced 18 turnovers and scored 16 points off those
Hawthorne still left something to be desired offensively
The Hornets turned it over 21 times themselves
and shot 8-19 and 6-11 from the line in the first 16 minutes with 23 points
Bowie said Wilson brought physicality and charisma to the program
"You got to be kind of different to play in Hawthorne
and it was great addition to the program," he said
it might have been appropriate to call the Polk County Sheriff
a figure that was only aided by some late Crossroad baskets
A crown should have brought out for the fourth quarter to coronate the champions
Hawthorne swelled its lead up to 20 points and cruised past the Scorpions on its way to immortality
Doing it without CJThe departure of Ingram, who recently signed to play for the Florida Gators
helped the team in the sense it became more balanced
and it feels extra great because people said we couldn't do it without him," Debose said
noting that players from other counties believed Hawthorne became an automatic win
He wouldn't go as so far to say the Hornets are better without CJ since he could score 30 points every night
"So it did force us to kind of get it done by committee."

Rex Weltz proposed closing Hawthorne Elementary at the district's March trustee meeting due to declining enrollment and budget
and people packed a special trustee hearing to weigh in on what the closure would mean for the community
“The purpose of tonight is the action we need to take in three recommendations around preserving and maintaining the core experience for all of our elementary students.”
There are three proposed options for Hawthorne’s future
closing the school at the end of this academic year
(Hear what faculty and parents are saying about potential Hawthorne School closure)
Hawthorne is the smallest elementary school in the district and faces declining enrollment
Many Hawthorne parents and employees are concerned with not only the school's future but also their own
you know as a secretary I am not tenured and my children would lose their friendships, their family," Kathryn Dunkelberger says
"I am sorry I get emotional on this but my kids are important to me and I don’t like them being viewed as a number."
there are nine classrooms in use and a projected enrollment of fewer than 171 students for the upcoming school year
If the school closes the district says Central School
which was renovated and reopened in 2019 and Kessler school
which the district has proposed renovating could absorb the Hawthorne students
Other schools could also absorb some of the 13 and half full-time equivalent positions but about half of those positions could be cut
"Ultimately we are going to have to choose between closing elementary schools in order to save money or getting the public to pass these bonds because we have seen in recent years in Helena just how important these neighborhood schools are."
Residents have expressed frustration with the process and worry that other schools could be closed if the cost savings from shutting down Hawthorne are not enough
The public has not just expressed their concerns at meetings but also through ads and petitions across social media
"We realize this is difficult for our students
A final decision on whether to close the school will be made during the trustee's June meeting
