(WLOS) — The public came out to celebrate the grand opening of the revitalized 7th Avenue District in downtown Hendersonville on Saturday
The 7th Avenue Street Fest ran from noon to 5 p.m.
The event coincided with the opening day of the Hendersonville Farmers Market on Maple Street
NEWLY-ANNOUNCED 7TH AVENUE STREET FEST CELEBRATES END OF REVITALIZATION PROJECT
downtown manager for the city of Hendersonville
told News 13 that the long-anticipated downtown project was originally set to begin in 2020
it faced setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic
"Most of them were heavily impacted by the storm because the construction was already happening here," Carpenter said
"We did have some businesses further down 7th Avenue that were heavily impacted," Carpenter added
and we were supposed to start this project back in 2020
and with COVID and all the impacts related to that and there were some construction delays
so it's really good to see that happening."
BUSINESSES BRACE AS 7TH AVE IN HENDERSONVILLE TO CLOSE AT END OF MONTH FOR RENOVATIONS
The celebration marked the completion of the $4.2 million streetscape revitalization project
which included essential underground utility upgrades
Carpenter said the 7th Avenue Street Fest gave visitors a chance to explore the refreshed district and enjoy local vendors
"It's to show how great of a district 7th Avenue is and to celebrate a long time coming," Carpenter said
'IT HAS TAKEN A TOLL' BUSINESSES READY FOR PART OF HENDERSONVILLE'S 7TH AVENUE REVEAL
said he was thrilled to see the community come out and support local vendors and businesses
"It's great to see the crowd come out today and support," he said
"Even though a lot of people have been hit so hard with Helene and the loss of tourism after all of the destruction
it's great to see the crowd come out today and support."
HENDERSONVILLE - After years of planning and construction
the renovation of Hendersonville’s historic 7th Avenue Depot District is officially completed
The city held a celebratory street festival May 3
coinciding with the seasonal opening of the Hendersonville Farmer’s Market
“This is a great day,” said Hendersonville Mayor Barbara Volk in remarks before a ceremonial ribbon cutting with city officials
business owners and construction contractors involved in the project
noting that this stretch of 7th Avenue was Hendersonville’s “original Main Street” in the city’s early days
Members of the public were invited to cut a second
much longer ribbon which they unspooled down the middle of the street
said his wife owns a building on the street
which used to be a hotel in the early 1900s
He said he was struck by the dramatic widening of what used to be “just a little narrow sidewalk,” which he said would make it more appealing to foot traffic
“You're just inviting more people,” he said
Upgrades also included brick paved crosswalks
landscaping built into the sidewalk in the form of planting beds and tree wells
fewer utility poles and improved stormwater runoff
Gigi McHone was celebrating the May 3 opening of her culinary boutique
along with the completion of the street itself
“Construction was really hard for businesses here,” she told the Times-News
Michael Tui said that he and his family often come to 7th Avenue for the Hendersonville Farmer’s Market
The renovation project has taken “a little while and (had) some challenges
but I thought they did a great job,” he said
noting that several new stores and breweries had recently opened in “revitalized” buildings
Hendersonville Downtown Manager Jamie Carpenter
told the Times-News that the 7th Avenue project has been under construction since January 2024
but that it was in the planning stage as far back as 2018
very relieved.” Knowing what businesses on the street “went through this last year with all of the construction
being able to have such a good event like this to celebrate… is really exciting.”
repairs and upgrades to underground utilities were a major part of the project

“There was 100-plus-year-old water and sewer infrastructure” under the pavement
“We didn't have that mapped 100 years ago.”
Digging in the street bed without any utility map led to “several water and gas breaks” that caused delays
This phase is over but the city is still doing more utility work “to continue this streetscape design down the street,” Carpenter said
This next phase “will be a much less painful experience
because there won't be the underground work that that was a big hurdle this time around.”

HENDERSONVILLE - Activists took to the street for a May Day demonstration in Hendersonville May 1 — one of more than 1,000 May Day events across the country — outside the Henderson County Courthouse on Grove Street
said that he came to show his support for democracy and the rule of law
The protest “just shows that we're all in this together … We're all gonna show up,” he said
appointed by Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency to slash funding and staffing from federal agencies
“This country was built on immigrants and the rights of the worker,” Bailey said
“I’d hate to see that get ruined by an oligarchy taking over
There were 300 people lining the sidewalk in front of the courthouse
a member of the Henderson County Democratic Party
the Progressive Alliance of Henderson County and Hendersonville Pride
waved upside-down American flags — widely understood as a symbol of distress and protest — and held up picket signs to passing drivers
reading "Resist," "Congress needs their pay cancelled" and "Due process
including the driver of a large flatbed semi who honked its bellowing horn to cheers from those on the sidewalk
“It's wonderful seeing all these people out here (and) we're all thinking on the same page for once.”
smaller protest was organized in parallel at the Historic Courthouse at the same time May 1 by another coalition of activist groups
and a May Day event held in Brevard in Transylvania County
May Day is traditionally a day to demonstrate for worker’s rights
but many of Thursday’s protesters at the Courthouse on Grove Street said they were motivated to attend by the political climate more broadly and recent actions of the Trump administration
“Hegspeth must go… Bondi must go… Musk must go,” the crowd chanted
the status quo in America is that the very wealthy are able to control everything and pit people against each other laterally over wedge issues like race
and we're standing against that," said Dal Davis
a member of the Transylvania County NAACP and Hendersonville Pride who led the crowd in chants through a megaphone
we're pushing for a more robust network of mutual aid and education," he said
and "trying to make our systems reflect the people."
and people are getting more and more focused on various issues that they didn't even know existed,” Davis said
I have a hard time comparing (this protest with past ones)
The May 1 protest may have been smaller than the April 5 Hands Off protest
which drew around 1,500 to the square in front of the Historic Courthouse off Main Street
but for a weekday she was impressed with the turnout
The Hands Off event “was planned for about a month in advance,” she said
It popped up in the last couple of weeks because it's May Day
We're rallying for workers rights and to defend democracy.”
HENDERSONVILLE - The night a Hendersonville pedestrian died in a hit-and-run
a United Parcel Service driver thought he had struck a deer before he returned his vehicle to the shipping company’s facility
according to court records and his defense attorney
was driving a 2016 Freightliner UPS truck west on Dana Road in a residential area just outside of Hendersonville
The pedestrian was hit by Laughter’s truck at 50 mph, according to his death certificate. The posted speed limit for Dana Road is 35 mph, according to a North Carolina speed limits map from the North Carolina Department of Transportation
a Hendersonville father and factory laborer
died from multiple blunt force injuries minutes later
An initial investigation by the N.C. State Highway Patrol showed Laughter left the scene and drove the truck to the UPS facility before returning to the accident, without reporting the collision, the Times News previously reported
Troopers arrested and charged Laughter on March 7 with felony hit-and-run inflicting serious injury or death
He was held in the Henderson County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond
told the Citizen Times that on the night of March 4
Laughter stopped after the collision and looked around
Previous reporting: UPS driver returns truck to facility after fatally hitting Henderson County pedestrian, NCSHP says
The state highway patrol executed a search warrant on March 19 to seize the UPS truck
which provides a similar narrative of that night
Laughter continued his route to the UPS facility on Duncan Road
about 2 miles away from where the accident happened
Laughter told his supervisor and the company’s mechanic that he had struck a deer
according to the warrant obtained by the Citizen Times
He also contacted his parents to tell them about the situation
who live in the general area of the accident
saw police lights nearby and went to the scene
The search warrant describes his mother telling troopers her son was driving the vehicle and thought he had struck a deer or dog in the road
She then brought her son back to the accident scene in a non-UPS vehicle
The troopers later found the brown UPS vehicle with front end damage at the shipping company’s facility
Laughter’s supervisor and the mechanic confirmed the truck was the one he drove that night
Dow confirmed Laughter is still employed by UPS
The Citizen Times reached out to the company’s spokesperson for comment

“Nothing like this has ever happened to him before
I genuinely believe he didn’t know what had occurred that night
I think that’s backed up by the fact he returned to the scene once he realized it wasn’t a deer.”

The City of Hendersonville Public Works Department will be conducting roadside mowing on City streets starting May 5 and continuing until late September
Vegetation control along roadsides improves the visibility of signs
and keeps sidewalks clear and free from overhanging limbs and branches.
“Managing the vegetation along our streets is an important function of the Public Works Department,” said Public Works Director Tom Wooten
“Keeping our roadways maintained is important for safety and visibility
Our crews are working hard to ensure roads
and sidewalks remain clear and accessible for everyone who uses them.”
Residents are encouraged to maintain their property adjacent to the street right of ways to avoid the need and effect of the City’s sidearm mower
the sidearm mower is the only viable way Public Works can manage this volume of roadside maintenance
A general guideline for homes adjacent to roadways is to keep any bushes
out of the roadway and 1-2 feet behind the curb or edge of the pavement
The height should be approximately 16 feet above the road surface
while sidewalks should be clear of obstructions to a height of 7-8 feet
Property owners near intersections are also asked to keep vegetation and debris trimmed far enough away from the intersections to allow motorists a reasonable line of sight before entering the intersection
For more information about the roadside mowing program, please visit https://www.hendersonvillenc.gov/public-works or contact the City’s Public Works Department at 828-697-3084.

This final push aims to clear remaining debris from Hurricane Helene in Hendersonville
May 1stis the final day to place storm debris in the right-of-way for collection within the city limits
crews will conduct a final sweep to complete debris collection in the municipality.
“We want this to be a community-wide effort to restore Hendersonville to pre-storm conditions,” said City Manager John Connet
and civic groups to join us in this final cleanup push.” City Manager Connet also stressed the importance of residents cleaning up storm debris away from their homes and into the right-of-way as an important way to better protect their homes from the threat of wildfires.
Residents are encouraged to take this final opportunity to clear their properties of remaining storm debris
and placed in the right-of-way by May 1 to ensure efficient and safe collection.
City of Hendersonville Storm Sweep Instructions for City of Hendersonville Residents:
residents should sort and place storm debris into separate piles in the right-of-way in front of their property
Residents are encouraged to place final storm debris out as soon as possible to help crews efficiently track and collect remaining debris.
Residents do not need to contact Public Works – crews have already mapped and will continue to map and track debris piles for collection.
For property owners who can’t move debris to the right-of-way or lack debris removal insurance, visit https://www.hendersoncountync.gov/em/page/private-property-debris-removal-program for information on Henderson County’s Private Property Debris Removal Program (PPDR).

Debris set out after this deadline will be the property owner's responsibility to dispose of and will be subject to code enforcement action.
Cleaning up from Hurricane Helene is a community effort
Even if you don’t have storm debris on your property
there are ways you or your organization can help clean up Hendersonville!
“This Storm Sweep is a key part of wrapping up debris collection from Hurricane Helene,” said City Manager John Connet
“We are supplementing the county-wide cleanup by dedicating additional resources and mutual aid assistance to make a final debris push within the city limits.” He explained the success of the Storm Sweep relies on collaboration with property owners and the community to get storm debris out to the right-of-way by the May 1 deadline.
