A landslide off Route 28 has severely damaged the village of Herkimer’s major water main
though officials have stated the village will not run out of water
On April 4, the village learned a landslide had damaged the major water main connecting to its reservoirs. Landslides are usually the result of heavy rains and cause a large-scale movement of rocks, debris, or dirt down a slope
A state of emergency was declared by Mayor Dana Sherry on April 6
saying this situation threatened public safety and exercised her to use the authority under Section 24 of the New York State Executive Law
“I hereby direct all departments and agencies of the village of Herkimer to take whatever steps necessary to protect life and property
public infrastructure and provide such emergency assistance deemed necessary,” the declaration read
According to a statement released by Sherry on the village’s Facebook page
We have the capability to convert 100% to wells if we need to
so we typically combine them both with a higher percentage of water from the Northern Line in normal circumstances.”

In a joint statement between the mayor and acting Water Superintendent Matthew Spisak

The village has been getting estimates from contractors and work started on April 9 to repair the line
Spisak and Sherry said in the statement that crews are working in difficult terrain in order to assess and repair the damage
the village of Herkimer is asking its residents to help in the restoration process by conserving water
Here is a list of things that people should do in the village of Herkimer area to conserve water:
Non-potable water will be available outside the Herkimer County Jail at 711 Middleville Road
People are asked to bring their own containers

There is a minimum weight of 80 pounds for laundry to conserve water
The Observer-Dispatch has reached out to the mayor and water superintendent for comment
but did not receive a response by time of publication
Acting Water Superintendent Matthew Spisak has barely had a minute to himself
as they work as fast as they can to restore the main water line
On April 4, the village learned that a landslide had damaged the major water main connecting to its reservoirs. Landslides are usually the result of heavy rains and cause a large-scale movement of rocks, debris, or dirt down a slope
the landslide took out 40 feet of the main water line connecting the reservoir to the village
The Northern Line is connected to the reservoir near Gravesville on Mill Road and travels 19.8 miles through the reservoir before ending up at another reservoir on College Hill Road
“The Northern Line is on the southside of a ravine,” he explained
“It’s about halfway up the ravine and sticking out of the bank
It got taken out by a tree that was uprooted.”
There won’t be any disruption of water to the village of Herkimer
And according to a statement released by the village of Herkimer
work is being done to switch to well water instead of their usual mix of both
but right now we’re slowly relying on our wells,” he said

“We’re trying to resolve this as quickly as we can.”
