Herriman • In the Salt Lake Valley’s still-surging southwestern corner
construction crews lay down more asphalt for roads
and families clamor for nearby green spaces
Herriman officials are trying to balance residents’ wishes with larger city plans to draw more visitors for sporting events and boost sales tax revenues
To do so, they proposed building a new 56-acre regional park near the city’s northern edge to host youth sports tournaments
But the booming suburb of 60,000 residents didn’t own the acreage its leaders were eyeing. The developers behind the controversial Olympia Hills project did
So, last week, the City Council signed off on a suite of deals that swapped city- and developer-owned parcels
allowing the company to build nearly 450 new single-family homes and setting up a formal planning process for the park
but regionally,” council member Jared Henderson said
“Whether it’s an organized soccer practice
any field sport is what we’re targeting for this
Henderson and other council members emphasized the importance of adding green space while also stewarding the city’s tight budget at the April 23rd meeting
The land deals drew a handful of residents concerned about adding new homes to a parcel that had been previously pitched as a large park
The council voted unanimously to complete the swaps and allow Olympia Ranch
to add more units in two other developments it is building
The company will receive about 46 acres in three separate parcels from the city in exchange for the forthcoming 56-acre park
Council members granted the developer the ability to build 260 homes on those lots: 136 in Creek Ridge Cove at 12160 S
12900 South and 11 in Big Bend Cove at 5860 W
The park parcel had been entitled for 77 homes under an agreement between the developer and the city
The company had already completed some engineering and utility work on the parcel
(Christopher Cherrington | The Salt Lake Tribune)
Two of the lots are marked as proposed green spaces in the city’s 2020 parks master plan
The planned Sorrento development seemed set to host a 5-acre neighborhood park or community center under the document
Olympia Ranch plans to build two small green spaces at the north and south ends of the development
The now-approved Creek Ridge Cove neighborhood at 12160 S
6400 West seemed to be a part of a 43-acre Northwest Sports Park
City leaders have now scrapped that idea for the larger athletic complex under construction just across 6400 West
the city hoped to extend a regional park there even farther west
but South Jordan ended up annexing that land
The council also signed off on the addition of 150 units to the bigger Olympia project and 36 homes to the Creek Ridge development
One resident supported the plan to build a bigger
Herriman is full of young families and talented kids who are eager to participate in sports and outdoor activities,” resident and soccer coach Amanda Axelson said during public comment
we simply do not have enough quality space to support them.”
She added that the family sometimes had to commute to Bluffdale and Draper to practice because there aren’t enough fields in Herriman
Other residents agreed that there weren’t enough places for kids to play
more neighborly park next to their development
just south of the new Creek Ridge Cove project
“The frustration is very real for our community at Copper Fields,” resident Loren Brewer said
“where there’s this perceived disregard from the City Council on our desires to have a park.”
Brewer said many in the neighborhood don’t want a trail
an open field or a big new complex where parents will have to pay for their kids to join a league
they want a traditional park with a playground
a pavilion and a place for youngsters to play pickup sports and get to know one another
Brewer and others’ comments sparked a fiery reprimand from council member Steven Shields — at his last meeting
Shields took issue with another commenter calling the council “liars” and Brewer’s assertion that the council wasn’t listening to constituents
then get your a - - up here and run for City Council,” Shields said
“Don’t just show up at a meeting once every five years and think you have the right to call these men liars

SALT LAKE CITY — A Herriman man has been arrested for the alleged sexual abuse of an elementary school-aged girl he met on social media.
Draden Dominick Checora, 23, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Monday and charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with sodomy on a child and three counts of rape of a child, first-degree felonies; and two counts of child endangerment, a third-degree felony.
Police say Checora messaged a girl on Snapchat starting about November.
"(The) victim stated she told (Checora) she was 11 years old, and he initially told her he was 16 but later admitted he was 23," according to a police booking affidavit.
At least six times, Checora picked up the girl without her parent's knowledge or consent, "often from her elementary school," and then sexually assaulted the girl in his car after parking in a secluded area, the affidavit alleges.
Checora is also accused of providing a THC vape to the girl on at least two occasions, according to charging documents. The last time the girl and Checora met, she took a TRAX train to a platform where Checora picked her up and drove her to his house, but he told her "to climb through his bedroom window so she would avoid being seen," police said.
Police were called after the activity was discovered by family members. Prosecutors have requested that Checora be held in the Salt Lake County Jail without the possibility of posting bail pending trial.

HERRIMAN — If you’ve ever wondered why pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in America
all you need to do is spend a few minutes on the court with Rusty Bryant
having fun and maybe sneaking in a little cardio
“This is what I look forward to,” Rusty said
Pickleball players at the new Herriman facility on Saturday
That’s the kind of passion fueling the grand opening of Premier Pickleball in Herriman
The indoor facility opened its doors this weekend with several courts that feature a softer playing surface to protect knees and ankles
and even a video replay system to capture your best shots
There is also a high-end ventilation system pulling in fresh air instead of recirculating air
“We wanted to make this whole facility specific to people who are serious about pickleball and make it a healthy
fun environment to play in,” said co-owner Molly Hansen
The best part is you don’t have to be a pro to play
Premier Pickleball offers classes for beginners
and social clubs for anyone who just wants to meet people and hit a few balls
That’s what drew Sandy resident Elyse Beckman to the grand opening
“It’s easy to move around on the court,” she said
but this is more fun because you can move faster and get the game going more.”
From teenagers to retirees, pickleball is appealing to a wider crowd than ever before
There is even talk of it making its Olympic debut for the 2032 Games in Brisbane
“I think everybody who starts to play goes through a phase of figuring it out
then becoming addicted,” Hansen said with a laugh
“Then they find the balance they need to maintain it.”
he’s definitely past the “figuring it out” stage
he’s just enjoying some friendly competition
“It’s a great sport and this is a great facility.”
Herriman took top honors in the Montana Invitational after winning four games over the weekend
"This was a really well-run tournament and I hope they keep having it," said Herriman Head Coach Jeff Wilson

The Mustangs beat Montana teams Gallatin (53-7) and Missoula (43-7)
Kahuku out of Hawai'i logged wins over Gallatin and the Liberty Patriots out of Washington
Kahuku logged a win over Missoula while Liberty beat Gallatin 35-7 to go to 1-1-1
and in this one the Mustangs identified the game as their toughest match
Wilson ran out a trong 15 against the Red Raiders and Herriman took that game 45-7
Herriman beat Liberty 33-10 to finish up 4-0
and Missoula beat Gallatin to wrap up a 1-2-1 weekend
"It was a great weekend for us," said Wilson
and in fact we had a freshman score in every game
This was a good test of what it's like at HS Nationals
I can honestly say I am proud of the performance of every player."
MacRae Parker was named the MVP of the tournament and Ryker Sydall was named MVP of the final match

the Herriman City Council met to discuss and voted to approve the land exchange needed to build a new athletic complex possible
The plan involves trading city-owned land for private land
so that the city has enough space for the complex
But it also results in housing being built in areas not originally meant for it
When people originally learned about the plan
Jonathan LaFollette with the city of Herriman said land exchanges aren’t unusual
“It's not common for something like this to happen,” LaFollette said
“Where the city has public property and is interested in swapping it for private property."
The idea of swapping land to build a sports complex was met with some opposition from Herriman neighbors
"The common thread is people are concerned with a land use that is changing from what they were expecting to something they weren't expecting,” LaFollette said
Some people who were expecting an open space park type of area are now getting homes
And some people who were expecting homes will get the complex
"My personal biggest concern was the amount of homes going in part of the swap,” said Herriman resident Haley Hill
Hill and some of her neighbors were upset at the numbers of homes that were set to be built in their neighborhood
the proposal has been reduced from 212 residential homes
That reduction has made Hill feel a little better about the situation
“Having it come down to what feels a bit more reasonable is a good compromise for me,” she said
but it hinges on what they'll end up getting it
Because all those details are still up in the air
"There's no guarantees yet and there's a lot of uncertainty about what the complex will look like
“Saying let's build all these houses and hope
Hill said she has confidence in the mayor and the council to make sure things work out

Utah (KUTV) — The city of Herriman is facing a possible decision as it considers a land trade proposal to build a new athletic complex
The plan would involve swapping city-owned land potentially designated for a public works facility and a park for a nearly 60-acre privately owned parcel to develop the sports facility
City leaders argue the complex could generate significant revenue for Herriman by hosting regional and national tournaments
some residents are questioning whether the deal is in the city’s best interest
“We have the best neighborhood,” said Haley Hill
and now it’s going even further and further.”
which is currently zoned for residential development
Developers may entertain an offer to provide land for the complex in exchange for three parcels of city-owned property for their developments
“I’m just not sold that it is a great deal well worth our time to give this up,” Hill said
City officials said the athletic complex could benefit the community by driving tourism and increasing sales tax revenue
which could help ease property tax burdens in the future
“We’re hoping that it’s big enough to host regional
maybe national tournaments for multiple sports,” said Jonathan LaFollette
“We want visitors to spend money at Herriman businesses
Concerns about the impact of higher-density housing
increased traffic and infrastructure strain that could come with the deal have come up
City officials also face questions about how the project would be funded
“There is interest to fund this park with non-city funds,” LaFollette said
The decision will come down to Herriman’s city council
Public meetings are scheduled for the third week of January
giving residents an opportunity to voice their opinions before a possible vote sometime in the coming months
More about the proposal can be found on Herriman's website.
HERRIMAN — After an unexpected demonstration last week by a group of apparent white nationalists in Herriman
"It seemed to be a really unwelcome visit by the majority of people here," she said
found others who were similarly outraged and started planning a counterprotest — set for Saturday — to send a different message
"We're hoping that people will come and put whatever politics or social views we have aside and realize that we are all neighbors and that we can love and support each other," Weist said
meant to "celebrate our diverse community," according to flyers
and will be held outside Herriman City Hall
the same place a contingent of masked demonstrators marched a week ago with an anti-immigrant message
Those demonstrators carried a sign that read
"Deport Invaders/Keep America American" and identified them as members of Patriot Front
labeled a white supremacist group by the Anti-Defamation League
they marched and they dissipated," said Nicole Peterson
another Herriman resident who's helping promote Saturday's counterprotest
She didn't see the Patriot Front gathering but understands it lasted around 15 minutes and that afterward
the participants piled into a rental truck and left
The demonstration and counterdemonstration come amid heightened debate about immigration and increased efforts by the new administration of President Donald Trump to detain and deport immigrants in the country illegally
But while immigration is a polarizing topic
Peterson said last week's incident spurred a measure of unity — even some who back Trump's crackdown were critical of the clandestine group's appearance
where a demonstration will be held on Saturday
in response to an anti-immigrant rally on Feb
(Photo: Nicole Peterson)"The majority of the reactions were pretty strong
people just shocked and appalled," she said
The quick demonstration also prompted a rebuke from Herriman Mayor Lorin Palmer and the Democratic leaders of the Utah House and Senate
"Our residents possess a wide array of political ideologies
but there is at least one thing that is universally embraced — hatred is not a part of who we are
and we stand by each other," Herriman wrote in a message
Escamilla and Romero called the Patriot Front appearance an "anti-American
"This demonstration specifically targeted vulnerable communities
We will continue to fight harmful rhetoric and not allow for hate to define our state," they said in a joint statement
Both Peterson and Weist are hoping to convey a message of reassurance with Saturday's planned counterdemonstration
The goal of organizers is to assure "anyone who is scared or feeling insecure" that there are "more people who love and support them than that tiny little group of men in masks," Peterson said
HERRIMAN — Several people are facing criminal charges in what police are calling a gang-related confrontation that culminated with shots fired and a car crash at a Herriman apartment complex in September
was charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with shooting in the direction of a person
shooting in the direction of a vehicle and four counts of aggravated assault
The charges were filed with gang penalty enhancements
Valera is the fifth person charged in connection with the Sept
The series of events happened in an apartment complex parking lot near 5600 W. Roe Deer Lane (11800 South). Herriman police responded to a report of shots fired
Officers arrived to find a Mitsubishi crashed into a fence by the pool
Riverton police reported that officers had stopped a Hyundai that had bullet holes in the front windshield as well as front-end damage
As detectives tried to sort out the various stories from those involved and witnesses
they learned that there was a physical confrontation between two groups that started when one group approached the other and "began to insult (them) and tell (them) this was their territory," according to the charges
during which one side made threats with a knife and another brandished a gun
one group got into the Hyundai and the other into the Mitsubishi
who then "fired three rounds into the windshield" of the Hyundai and then two more shots into the air
"Detectives located a bullet fragment in the seam of the driver seat and bullet holes in the windshield
A deformed bullet was pulled from the seat where (one man) was seated," according to the charges
"A fragment of the bullet struck the driver in the shoulder
while the other shots hit the door frames and ricocheted into the driver side seat and rear passenger seat."
A police investigator from another agency notified detectives that some of the people involved in the Sept
22 incident had also been involved in an undisclosed incident in their jurisdiction and had been identified as members of a gang whose origins have been traced to a prison in Venezuela
They have been called a "transnational criminal organization," court documents state
Prosecutors say Palmar is in the United States illegally after entering through Florida
He has remained in the Salt Lake County Jail since his arrest following the shooting
Arrest warrants have been issued for the other four men charged
was charged with three counts of aggravated assault
a second-degree felony; and three counts of threatening or using a weapon in a fight

HERRIMAN — A group of Herriman high school band students are headed to the "Olympics" of percussion competition just three years after the indoor band program got revamped
The Mountain Ridge High School winter percussion ensemble will be competing at the Winter Guard International Percussion World Championships next week in Dayton
The 34 students who play percussion instruments ranging from tenor drums to cymbals to marimbas and more will be performing "Echoes of Ashes," a seven-minute set depicting the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii
Their set includes a volcano with magma running down it and ash erupting out and covering all of the musicians
"That's always been a history moment that has stuck with me and my staff
what it looks like when in that moment the catastrophe happened
And how could we recreate that?" band director Cristopher Stiles said
The students said they are hoping people can feel the passion and work they put into their set and understand the story they are portraying
The Mountain Ridge High School winter percussion ensemble performs at Mountain Ridge High School in Herriman

(Photo: Dan Olsen)While many people know what a marching band is
the winter guard is just the color guard and drumline sections of the band that can compete in their own divisions in the spring
while wind and brass instruments have their own sit-down band events
just the percussion members will be competing in their own division
Stiles started at Mountain Ridge three years ago
he wanted to revamp the percussion program to bring it to a higher standard
"It's taken us three years to get to this point
These seniors were our baby sophomores and freshmen on that line," Stiles said
The first indoor season had lots of bumps in the road
The students were great at producing the music
but the design of their performance set — costumes
props and flooring — were a bit "atrocious," looking back
With the addition of three "of the most competent and killer creative guys" on the staff who knew their way around the winter guard
and it sort of magically came into place," he said
the Mountain Ridge percussion ensemble blew the competition away at regionals
the team decided to set their sights even higher
'What if we went to world finals in Dayton?'" Stiles said

Marimba senior Joe DeNamur has been at the school since the beginning of the indoor program
He said it's been a process watching the program be built back up from ground zero
said it's been cool to watch all of the students push themselves to help the program become better each year
"We have at least already put in hundreds of hours of practice
we know exactly what we are supposed to be doing
down to every tiny movement," VanDuren said
The best part of this process has been watching the students embrace the challenges and stretch themselves to become better
(Photo: Dan Olsen)"Watching them each year has been rad," he said
They find value and to be rewarded — there's nothing that builds self-confidence and self-actualization more than being on a team and doing those kinds of things."
Mountain Ridge will be the second school from Utah to ever attend the world championships, which has been operating for more than 30 years
"One big thing that I don't think most people realize is how large of a time (commitment) and sacrifice it is for us to do this thing that we love so much," DeNamur said
"It's really nice to see having done it for so long
and getting to this really big thing for our last hurrah is really rewarding."
Although DeNamur is nervous to be on the world stage
he is excited to be surrounded by world-class talent
VanDuren said it's "unreal" and crazy" getting to compete
The seniors are looking forward to competing one last time as a team before graduating
VanDuren is proud of how far the program has come and is excited to see what becomes of it after he moves on
"I'm super excited for next year and see where our program ends up but it definitely will be really sad without the seniors," Belcher said
Correction: Mountain Ridge is not the first Utah school to attend the world championship

TRAX wouldn't be a great option because it goes north

a town hall meeting has been held Tuesday night to discuss the proposal to swap land with a developer to build a sports complex
the land swap would generate sales tax revenue for the city and businesses
some homeowners living near the proposed land are concerned about the traffic impacts the sports complex may bring
“I just hope that when they make the decision
they gather input from the people living here because ultimately we're the ones that live by it and have to deal with the traffic,” said a homeowner living near the proposed land
The City of Herriman said the city has reviewed the traffic impacts and is considering that into their decision
“Traffic is a concern that is something that's been waiting in the decision by the city council
something that's been very much thought through and included in this whole idea and thought process,” said Jon LaFollette
Herriman officials said Tuesday’s town hall meeting is one of many before the city council makes a final vote on the land swap in the next few weeks
HERRIMAN — Prosecutors say Summer Tatiana Roney's death and the condition in which her body was found was "especially heinous and cruel."
was charged in Salt Lake City's 3rd District Court with aggravated murder
a first-degree felony; obstruction of justice
a second-degree felony; and abuse or desecration of a dead body and possession of a weapon by a restricted person
A graphic eight-page probable cause statement outlines a horrific crime scene discovered by police
both at Johnson's house and in his Jeep Compass
but her family says she preferred to go by Roney
was found in a box in the back of a Jeep parked at a 7-Eleven at 15871 S
Johnson was found unconscious in the driver's seat
The first officers who found Johnson's vehicle looked into "the rear compartment of the vehicle from the rear window and observed a female in a cardboard box
Officers opened the trunk to check on the welfare of the female and found that the female had an extension cord around her neck and multiple bruises and lacerations to her head
The female was unresponsive and cold to the touch," the charges state
A hammer with blood on it was also found in the vehicle
Detectives later determined Roney was killed in Herriman and served a search warrant on Johnson's residence at 13364 S
A bat was found with smudge marks that had recently been washed
Detectives also found smudge marks "on the kitchen floor that appeared to be left from something being dragged from the entrance to the basement toward the garage door
and blood traces were located in multiple areas on the stairwell including the wall
baseboards and stair posts," according to the charges
"Detectives located a mattress in the garage wrapped in plastic with blood stains
as well as a paper towel with hair and what appeared to be a small piece of skin," the charges continue
"Two large black trash bags were located with multiple items inside that had blood stains
Also inside the trash bags were multiple towels that were beginning to crust and appeared to have bleach stains."
Police say there was a strong odor of bleach in the kitchen
Home surveillance videos from neighbors showed Johnson in his driveway on Dec
trying to organize the trunk area of his car
Johnson's car was backed into the driveway
and Johnson is attempting to close the lift gate to his car
Johnson is able to get the lift gate most of the way closed but is unable to get it to latch closed," the charges state
Johnson was discovered at the 7-Eleven just after midnight on Dec
Friends of Roney told police they last saw her on Dec
They told investigators she and Johnson "had an on-and-off again relationship over the past four years and described Johnson as a hothead" while describing Roney "as a kind and uplifting girl who had a difficult childhood and learning disabilities
They estimated her mental function to be around the age of 16
despite her being 30 years old," charging documents state
Another friend told police in October that Roney "confided in him that she was having trouble with Johnson and described Johnson as verbally abusive and mentioned that he had hit her multiple times," the charges state
Another friend told police that Roney told her in November that "Johnson had recently put her in a chokehold
nearly killing her" and "frequently spoke about the abuse she endured from Johnson."
An autopsy found Roney's "entire body was covered in bruises" as well as open wounds believed to be caused by a claw hammer
The Utah State Medical Examiner's Office noted that the trauma suffered by Roney "was extreme
and the likely cause of death is the totality of injuries from blunt force trauma."
"Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the victim in this alleged murder

dropping 32 points in the fourth quarter alone
of the 6A state championship Thursday at the Huntsman Center
Down a possession to begin the fourth quarter
the Darts ripped off 15 points in 5 minutes pushing for all the marbles
Bryker Couser sunk a 3-pointer for Davis and the Darts went streaking away 75-66 for the program’s eighth state title and first since defeating then top-seed Westlake as the No
Couser’s six points included one of the game’s pivotal baskets
building on a 24-of-51 effort from the field
Senior Coleman Atwater’s 24 points and three rebounds led the Darts
finishing 24-3 in their eighth state championship campaign
and Junior Moala (four points) each provided steady answers throughout the evening
Davis finished the better 3-point shooting team (nine 3s) and dominated the glass by 11 more boards (31 total)
Thursday’s performance marks the second state championship for Chad Sims
coaching Davis teams to both of his career championships with three state title appearances in the past five seasons
Davis pulled the 3-point trigger enough to lead twice throughout a close first quarter
Turley pushed the Darts up three late and a spin move by Atwater
evading Stockton Blanchard for a full-extension layup
Couser and Bessinger shot tit-for-tat with Herriman in the first minutes back
emphasized by Carlo Mulford’s second 3-point bucket of the first half
Two turnovers by Stone Tia motivated a short 5-0 Davis run featuring another Turley 3-pointer
trimming Herriman’s lead to four at the break
The second-half greeting Davis hoped for came in the form of a Christensen and-one bucket
siphoning Herriman’s lead to one with a near-full third quarter to play
The Mustangs profited slightly off three empty Darts possessions but opened the fourth still holding a one-possession lead due to Moala baskets and an Atwater 3-pointer
Davis opened the fourth quarter on a mighty 15-7 run
forcing two timeouts by the Herriman bench in as little as five minutes
Couser pitted Herriman down eight with a 3-pointer coming out of the break and two stops spelled the end for the Mustangs
behind leading scorers Carlo Mulford (23 points) and Cale Barclay (21 points)

Utah (KUTV) — A plot of land in Herriman has become the center of a development debate after residents claimed they were told the area would become a park but now may be a residential area
Herriman officials are considering a land trade proposal to build homes in the area and build a 56-acre sports complex somewhere else
Jared Henderson, a Herriman City Council member, shared on Facebook his opinion for the sports complex
the sports complex could generate much-needed revenue for the city
KUTV reached out to Henderson for comment but did not receive a response
he highlighted the potential benefits of the project
Henderson said the proposed sports complex would be located on a larger lot and could qualify for funding sources to improve roads and infrastructure — expenses the city might otherwise struggle to afford
He also said the sales tax revenue the complex could bring might provide an alternative revenue for the city
"We need to increase Herriman’s sales tax revenue compared to the number of people that we must provide services for."
some residents said they were promised a park
"The whole reason why we moved into this community was because there’s a park where you could just walk.”
The proposed project continues to spark debate as the community is concerned about traffic and infrastructure issues with balancing development
Herriman residents said they plan on voicing their concerns at the next city council meeting on January 22
Utah (KUTV) — Videos that circulated on social media showed what appeared to be members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front marching in front of Herriman City Hall
holding a sign that read “Deport Invaders.”
captured by several local residents on Saturday
depicted dozens of individuals wearing white face coverings
One witness told 2News she was driving home from the local library when she decided to check if the skating rink was open to take her daughter
"I saw a huge crowd with white nationalist flags walking toward the skating rink I was so upset
I pulled over to record them and try to hear what they were saying."
The Anti-Defamation League described Patriot Front as a white supremacist group that “justifies its hate and intolerance under the guise of preserving America’s identity as a ‘Pan-European nation.’”
They emphasized that the group aims to “form a new state that advocates for the ‘descendants of its creators,’ namely white men.” Since 2017
the group has been promoting various ideologies
and has been known for spreading white supremacist propaganda across the U.S
Herriman City Public Communications Manager Jon LaFollette told 2News
"We were first made aware of the demonstration when it happened
it remained peaceful and no illegal activity occurred." When questioned if city permits are required for demonstrations like these
LaFollette stated "No permit required for this one

The top two teams in Utah in #7-ranked school team Herriman and #4-ranked Cavemen met up Saturday evening in Utah league play
and it was the Cavemen who came away victors
It was Senior Night for Cavemen and they were recognizing 21 seniors
most of whom had been with the Cavemen/American Fork program since early middle school
Paced by two tries from scrumhalf Chris Malo
and with flyhalf Tristan Mocke converting four
“The boys battled hard,” said Herriman Head Coach Jeff Wilson
For Cavemen Mocke’s kicking from the tee was complemented by his kicks for space and for touch
Captain Leo Esikia was a physical presence and was a leader on defense
while flanker Carlos Uyema helped contain Herriman’s eightman pick with his defense
Jared Iakopo at center and wing Afu Liufau were massive in making line breaks
The unheralded work was led by hooker Bradley Robinson
With Wes Betham and Hank Vernon coming in to finish the game off
“Just the amazing caliber of these young men on and off the field creates a chemistry
This follows on from a strong Friendship Cup performance in Tennessee
in which the team learned that discipline and being discipline under pressure would be the only way to beat teams of the level of Herriman
nature of Utah Youth Rugby's league structure means they won't be in the state playoffs as a result of two close losses to LCA and Cavemen
The Mustangs will be looking ahead to the Montana Invitational
"It felt like a national-title-caliber game
I told the boys and said you will not see a team that talented
Our kids played their butts off but we made a couple of costly mistakes and that hurt us."
Utah (KUTV) — A Herriman resident has been charged on allegations of unprovokedly pepper spraying a dog while it was confined in its owner's backyard behind a fence
Herriman police said Animal Services officers responded to a report of animal cruelty on Summit Crest Lane at 9 a.m
The caller reported that an unknown individual had used pepper spray on their dog while it was within the fenced area of their backyard
located along a walking trail that runs adjacent to the property
Officers reviewed video footage of the incident
which reportedly suggested that the use of pepper spray on the dog was unnecessary
The victim posted on social media asking for community assistance in locating the suspect as police worked to identify him
A comment uploaded to the victim’s post reportedly led to the identification and subsequent arrest of 55-year-old Raymond Torres
Torres faces charges of animal cruelty and disorderly conduct
Investigators said "Venezuelan groups" were involved in a weekend shooting in Herriman that left a person with a bullet wound to the shoulder and a car crashing through a fence
Utah (KUTV) — A Herriman shooting in September is now being linked to the notorious gang
The Tren de Aragua gang from Venezuela — which has sparked concerns across the country and prompted the federal government to offer millions in reward money to capture its leaders — is now in Utah
A top state investigator confirmed Tren de Aragua's presence in an exclusive KUTV interview on Friday
Herriman police acknowledged the gang's involvement in a September shooting and assault
"Definitely based off some of the information coming from the investigation
and procedures that are consistent from that criminal organization," said Captain Tanner Jensen
director of the Statewide Information and Analysis Center
Five young men have been charged in connection with the Herriman case
which left at least one individual hurt and sent a car through a fence at an apartment complex
A KUTV check of the inmate roster at the Salt Lake County jail showed at least three of the defendants are still being held
Accusations against them range from shooting and injuring a person
Jensen said more crimes are tied to Tren de Aragua in the state
MORE: Teen arrested, several detained after gang-related shooting at Herriman apartment complex
with the last stop for girls being forced into prostitution
they have to work off their fee and that takes years to do."
KUTV asked if the whole pipeline from Venezuela to Utah is controlled by the gang
"That's a trend and tactic that we've seen here in Utah and across the nation
Until Friday, police in Herriman — which has welcomed Venezuelan migrants — said the September shooting and confrontation was between "Venezuelan groups."
KUTV asked why it took so long to identify a Tren de Aragua connection
cited "the complexity of the investigation," and noted Tren de Aragua adherents often don't have tattoos or other signs of membership
SALT LAKE CITY — For just over one half of basketball
Lehi was what you would call “the best version of itself.”
8 seed Pioneers were cooking on both ends of the floor and led a shocked No
1 seed Herriman by 17 points at the 6:09 mark of the third quarter in Monday’s 6A quarterfinal matchup
But there’s a reason the Mustangs are the top seed and they dominated the rest of the game
eventually holding off a late Lehi run for a 67-63 victory
Herriman scored on ten straight possessions in the fourth quarter and finished 11 of 12 (92%) from the field in the final eight minutes
an astonishing display of offensive execution that seemed to end with every shot at the rim
and they end up at a 1.2,” Lehi coach Reed Bromley said
“Who we are is what you saw the first half
as much as us moving away from the game plan and a commitment to certain things that help them go
And when you’re playing against a great team
you can’t blink and you can’t give them that opportunity.”
with 6-foot-8 Cale Barclay scoring eight points
causing turnovers and converting on the other end
The Pioneers ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run
taking a 13-11 lead on a steal by Ashton Shewell
Lehi dropped in trio of 3-pointers — one each from Shewell
Cole Welch and Peyton Hawkins — and Shewell produced a steal and a two-handed dunk to cap 13-2 run and for 28-15 lead with 3:12 to play
Lehi kept up the pace early in the third quarter
getting back-to-back triples from Hawkins and Shewell for a 36-19 advantage at the 6:09 mark
1 seed suddenly got hot and banged in four straight 3-pointers to close to five
On the Mustangs final possession of the quarter
Drew Stilson gathered in a loose ball in the corner and threw up a prayer that was answered
a 3-pointer that beat the buzzer to trim the deficit to 43-40 going into the fourth
Herriman’s half court offense started finding holes and a basket inside from Stockton Blanchard pushed his team into the lead
The Mustangs led by as many as seven points but Lehi rallied and a Saxon Young 3-pointer with 39.4 second to got the Pioneers within three
But Herriman made four straight free throws to hold on for the victory
I think we were disruptive defensively in the first half
and we kind of had a couple things going,” Bromley said
“We had a certain way we wanted to defend and and then we had kind of a fallback
Barclay led Herriman (23-2) with 21 points
Blanchard added 15 and Carlo Mulford 14 for the Mustangs
shot 78% (18 of 23) from the field in the second half
Herriman and Lehi met in last year’s semifinals
with the Pioneers getting a 63-62 win and eventually claiming the 6A title with a victory against Corner Canyon
maybe karma plays out a little bit,” Bromley said
Young topped Lehi (14-10) with 16 points and Ashton Shewell contributed 15
Leading scorer Easton Hawkins (19.4 points per game) took just eight shots and scored nine points while dishing out six assists
a long-time assistant coach at both Lone Peak and Lehi
his first year as a head coach was a learning experience
and we were able to witness their growth,” he said
“We want to be a part of their lives and and to take from this game kind of where we go
You have to be willing to lean in and do the things that need to be done to finish the job
So we talked about that (in the locker room)
Some of the players coming back talked about being able to remember the feeling
and make sure that doesn’t repeat itself.”

"There is no space in Utah for this type of hatred."

using a series of highlight-reel plays to offset a few unforced errors and claim a 1–0 lead
The Silverwolves pieced together three dominant scoring runs that totaled a 16-2 stretch
allowing them to take control of the opening set
A pivotal moment came around the 10-point mark when Herriman middle blocker Malcom Swiss came down on an opponent’s foot and rolled his ankle
The injury visibly shook the Mustangs and disrupted their rhythm
and we had a little bit of trouble to start,” said Herriman coach Austin Linford
we don’t sprint out very often — we tend to find our rhythm as we go along
Linford continued when asked about the conversation before the second set: “The group was asking how Malcom is
and our hitters were able to start hitting really well
Hayden Francis came in when Malcom went down
He hasn’t played a lot of varsity and had a really good match
Herriman bounced back with a commanding response
racking up several key kills — including a well-placed cross-court spike that energized the team
he sparked a 3-0 run to extend the Mustangs’ lead as they pulled away for a 25-18 win
Herriman opened the third frame with a quick burst
Although Riverton fought back to tie it at 18
the Mustangs regained control down the stretch to claim the stanza and go up 2-1 in the match
Matias Hanks is a great setter and puts me in great positions,” Rylan Pettit said of his huge second set
but I’ve been working to fix my screen and get my hand high
Riverton adjusted from a 6-2 to a 5-1 rotation — opting to run their offense through a single setter to create more fluid attacks and sharper angles
The change initially caused problems for Herriman
as the Silverwolves jumped out to a 8–4 lead
turning the frame into a back-and-forth battle
Herriman dug deep and closed on a 5–2 run to seal the match and complete the comeback after the Swiss injury
When asked about the impact of some of his teammates
he brings all the heat and pressure onto the court
It was a hard adjustment to bring the energy ourselves
We had to intentionally be loud every single point and celebrate everything to supplement his energy
And then Matias and I have been playing together for all of our lives
everything I do on the court is easy because I know he can give it to me wherever I am on the court.”
rebounding after a tough loss to Mountain Ridge on Tuesday. The Mustangs are now 4-1 in Region 2 play
which arguably had five of the top 10 teams in the state
They’ll next take on Salem Hills and West Jordan at a neutral site tournament on Saturday before playing through the second half of region play

A new indoor pickleball facility opened its doors this weekend with several courts that feature a softer playing surface to protect knees and ankles
Mountain Ridge edged out Herriman by a single run for the second consecutive day
this time thanks to a walk-off single by Stockton Fowlks
The Mustangs wasted no time setting the tone
piecing together three straight hits to build an early 3-0 advantage
Cache Carter and the Herriman defense took control
The unit was sharp through the first four innings
stifling the Sentinels with two double-plays and keeping Mountain Ridge from gaining any offensive momentum
pitcher Tyler James settled in after a rocky start
tossing five shutout innings to keep Mountain Ridge within reach
His steady presence on the mound gave the team a chance to regroup and refocus at the plate
Mountain Ridge took advantage of a defensive error and strung together two singles to push across a run and ignite the rally
throw as many strikes as I can and trust my defense to make plays
I do the best I can and my defense does my work for me
It’s a good feeling to help pick up a well-earned team win,” commented James following his strong rebound performance in the comeback victory
Still trailing by two heading into the bottom of the sixth
Cooper Goff stepped to the plate hoping to spark the Sentinels’ offense
He didn’t waste any time—jumping on the first pitch
and launching it deep over the left-center field fence to trim the deficit to one
needing just 10 pitches to retire the next three batters and send the game to the seventh with Herriman still in front
“I knew late in the game we had to get something going
I did what I could with it,” reflecting on his home run that sparked the rally
After a sixth straight scoreless inning for the Mustangs
Mountain Ridge came to the plate needing at least one run to extend the game
With a runner just 90 feet from home and only one out
Ryker Morton stepped in with an excellent opportunity to tie the game
He delivered a hard-hit single to bring in the tying run
before also safely stealing second base to get into scoring position
so I knew I had to hit it hard in the infield or deep in the air
and I was able to get a hard hit on it,” said Morton reflecting on his approach to the at-bat
Fowlks — who recorded three walk-off hits last year — stood calmly
biding his time as Herriman made a pitching change
he delivered a line drive right over second base
“I was frustrated after my fifth inning strikeout,” Fowlks said
told me to keep my head up and that I was going to walk the game off in the seventh
I knew I had a lot of confidence in the dugout
and when I saw I was going to have the opportunity
I put that confidence into myself and played it as another at-bat
I knew I’d have a chance on the second pitch and was able to get something on my bat and score a run.”
The victory brought Mountain Ridge’s record to 9-3 on the year
with more than half of their games ending with a one-run margin
When we are halfway through the game and it is 3-0
my mind starts going to what we need to change
But you have to tip your cap to Carter; he kept us off balance most of the day
Our hitters finally adjusted a little bit towards the end of the game
and we found a way to win,” commented coach Brock Whitney
emphasizing the importance of picking up tight victories
we have dropped close games that have bit us in the butt a bit
but now five of our wins have been by one run
it is our approach that is the deciding factor in those games
It is a big deal; every win we get in Region 2 is a big deal.”
Herriman and Mountain Ridge will wrap up their series on Friday afternoon
the only single school programs in Utah's combined Tier 1
met in an early season match after getting their feet wet at the Puriri Invitational last week
Defending state champion East was looking to establish itself after an uneven showing in that warmup tournament
while Herriman was looking to continue its momentum from a strong start
Both teams came in to this game nursing some injuries from a week ago
with East down a starting center and Herriman down four starters in total and running out a lineup with only three seniors
After a scoreless 15 minutes that saw Herriman probe the big defensive line of East several times without points
shifty wing Sione Nau sliced and diced his way to a score from a nice offload by Kemper Castro
Fullback Asher Coleman lined up the difficult sideline conversion and cleared the posts with plenty of distance to spare for a 7-0 lead
saw the defense paying too much attention to the backline
and pulled the ball down and sprinted 40 meters for a score
flyhalf and captain Lucky Fisi'peau (who put the Mustangs in good field position with a deft 50-22) sent a skip pass to the outside channel
Showing why he is a highly sought-after football recruit
the big man looked like a wing and ran right past a defense that had no answer for him for another long distance score
Coleman drilled both conversions to send the Mustangs to a 21-0 halftime lead
Both teams came out for the second half with renewed energy
and a bit of sloppy play saw repeated infringements and a yellow card shown to players from each team
Flyhalf Rex Bateman made several nice plays to put East down close
and a string of successive Herriman penalties gave the Leopards enough opportunities in close that they were able to punch one over to cut the deficit to 21-5
East took advantage of some sloppiness from Herriman and pushed the ball inside the 5-meter-line again
but this time the Mustang defense made a stand
In what seemed to be double digit phases down close
East kept charging hard with their bigger pack
but found the Herriman defense equal to the challenge
led by junior defensive stalwart Cannon Brinton and freshman prop Sam To'a
held and held until junior TJ Tuia forced a turnover
The ball made its way out wide to wing Troy Ellermeier
who turned on the jets and was gone the other way for a backbreaking swing in momentum—all made possible by Herriman's defensive effort
Herriman kept its foot on the gas pedal and were rewarded with a long try from junior center MacRae Parker
who finally broke free after a day of drawing in defenders as the focal point of the East defense
Bateman made sure East wasn't going down lightly with a quick try down the sideline
but Herriman would let things get no closer
After a lineout steal from sophomore Kyler Holverson
Herriman worked the ball just inside the 22
popped a cheeky kick over the advancing defense
Freshman center Max Wilson sprinted right by the fullback and touched down in goal for his first Varsity try and a 40-12 advantage
East added another score just before the final whistle to dress up the final margin a bit at 40-17
but it could not take the luster off of a strong showing from the young Herriman side against a quality East team
Herriman picked up a solid Region 2 victory on the road on Thursday
defeating Bingham 19-7 on a windy afternoon
The Miners started strong behind senior pitcher Brecka Larson
who struck out five and carried a no-hitter through two innings
Jenna Thomas led off with a deep fly ball that looked destined for the fence
a foul pop-up near first base was hauled in at an awkward angle
giving her just enough time to tag up and score
Bingham added another run to take a 2-0 lead but left the bases loaded for the second straight inning
Keira Rodriguez crushed a ball to deep center
who followed with a towering shot over the right-field wall
(Rodriguez) starting it off pushed me to do my job and get her in
I saw it was high and inside — I’ve seen that pitch since I was a freshman — so I got my foot down and turned on it,” McDermaid said about her game-tying home run
After a couple of walks and a pitching change
Jaylee Hansen delivered a two-run triple to put the Mustangs in front
They kept the momentum going in the fourth
adding five more runs to stretch their lead to seven
who notched three more strikeouts in the inning
I was thinking that I had to get my teammates in to take this lead
I was able to just keep it going,” Hansen said
reflecting on the importance of taking the lead in the third inning
Bingham’s attempt at a comeback in the fourth inning fell short
along with some key outs from Sierra Prescott
while Bingham managed just three in the last frame
it was Herriman’s pitchers who shut down a relentless Miner offense
pitching three solid innings before Sierra Prescott came in to close it out
recording six strikeouts and allowing just one walk
“It was a team effort — we had a lot of RBIs and needed some sacrifice bunts
The pitchers did a great job today; they locked in
and did everything we needed to pick up the win,” Herriman coach Heidi McKissick said
reflecting on the victory as the team heads into a 10-day break in the schedule
“This win gives us a ton of confidence as we continue in our tough region.”
Herriman will return to action on April 9 when they host West Field
while Bingham’s next game will be a visit to Riverton on April 8

HERRIMAN — Homeowners are voicing their frustration over plans to approve a large rock mine next to their homes
the company has already started mining there without a permit
Hundreds of townhomes sit just uphill of the South Valley Rock Products quarry
Residents are just feet away from where they’re blasting
Jeffrey Western represents a group of at least 60 Herriman homeowners who are all worried about South Valley Rock Products’ plans to add a large gravel mine to the quarry
“I can’t afford to move somewhere else
I don’t have that capability,” Western said
Jeffrey Western pointing to how close the new mine will be to the townhomes
He said each blast brings a host of problems
“It shakes the house; this whole house just vibrates when it blasts
We’ve seen mice a ton; I’ve caught 20 mice in the last month and a half,” he said
Some, but not all, in the neighborhood received a notice in September from the Utah Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining stating the likely approval of the mine
and now the DOGM is holding a public meeting next month to hear their frustrations
“With the mine I’m obviously expecting more blasts
The letter that some residents at the townhomes received from the Utah Division of Oil
the DOGM told KSL TV that it was discovered that South Valley Rock Products had already begun mining without a permit
The division said the company is working to get that permit
but the DOGM will factor in comments from the upcoming meeting in its decision to issue South Valley Rock Products the permit
If you want to attend, the meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Dec. 4 at the Sky Ridge Townhome clubhouse at 4391 W
The latest Utah boys basketball RPI rankings have Herriman rated as Utah’s best 6A team
On Friday night Herriman came out on top in a Region 2 battle
though the Sentinels showed that disparity may not be so large
Cale Barclay scored 24 points and Carlo Mulford had seven of his 21 points in a three-minute span in the fourth quarter to lift the Mustangs to a 74-67 win in front of a near-capacity crowd enjoying a tough Region 2 game
close region game between two good teams,” said Doug Meacham
the longtime coach who is in his second year at Herriman and has the Mustangs eyeing their first league title in their 15-year history
teams are seeing each other for the second time and they have been able to make adjustments and we have to adjust with them.”
“He sees the court well and gets all the other players involved
They know that they can’t beat everyone unless they play together and we’re taking our season one game at a time and winning the same way.”
Herriman handled the adjustments well enough to improve to 18-1 overall and 6-0 in region
The Mustangs have a two-game lead in the Region 2 standings with four remaining
another savvy veteran coach whose resume includes one season at Herriman before taking the Mountain Ridge job
saw his team drop to 9-9 overall and 2-4 in region
Briggs said this contest reminded him of the first one between the teams this season three weeks ago (a 60-47 Herriman win) on the Sentinels’ home floor
“We lost our composure a bit in the third quarter and let the game get away,” Briggs said
“A lot of (6A) teams are pretty talented and closely matched
The Sentinels had a balanced-scoring effort with Will Lindsay and Sawyer Howell leading the team with 15 points apiece
Landon Blackwell added 13 and Jordan Horsley 12
Mountain Ridge and Herriman both shot well from the 3-point stripe and left the court at halftime tied 37-37
used a 10-0 scoring run early in the third period to build a seemingly comfortable lead
The Mustangs made 10 of 12 shots in the quarter and took advantage of Mountain Ridge’s willingness to accept open 3-point attempts from well beyond the line
The lead grew to double figures before the Sentinels found their range again and
Howell’s layup with 5:37 left cut the margin to 60-57 and another easy basket by Lindsay made it a one-point game before Mulford came through to ease the Herriman fans’ unrest
Probably the most interesting part of the contest occurred shortly after Lindsay’s bucket
Mountain Ridge used full-court pressure to nearly steal an inbounds pass
Herriman tried to get the ball in play but had to call two consecutive timeouts to find an open player while avoiding a five-second call
the Mustangs resorted to lofting the ball nearly the length of the court where the 6-foot-8 Barclay grabbed it and was immediately fouled
Barclay made the ensuing charity shots — the first of six straight by the Mustangs — and that ended the threat
Your big winners coming out of the Puriri Tournament seem to be Herriman and Layton Christian Academy
Those two teams are certainly two of the major state contenders this year
it's important to remember that the Puriri Tournament
leading comfortably at halftime before ringing the changes
They followed that up with a 53-10 win over Tribal
and then beat the Caveman out of American Fork 25-7
"Not too bad for our first run out," said Herriman Coach Jeff Wilson
MacRae Parker and Ryker Syddall started well for Herriman and the junior flanker pairing of Cannon Brinton and Jaden Mangelson showed a high work rate
"They're like we're playing with 17 guys because you swear there's two of each of them out there," said Wilson
"They are all-effort guys who like to hit."
Junior prop Timote Kinikini showed a nice turn of pace and mobility and set up several tries in open play
with their 2nds beating Tribal and also Brighton by two
Their 1st side encountered slightly different fortunes
They blew past Kahuku 54-5 on Friday and then beat East 34-5
Head Coach Tongia Vaitaki seemed somewhat surprised
maybe because he returns just a small number of players from the team that took 5th at HS Nationals last year
"We have a challenging year [coming up]," Vaitaki told GRR
"It's almost like we're rebuilding this year
They do have players moving up from the JV side
and this past weekend was the weekend to get some of that work done
especially when we travel to play teams away from Utah
"The Puriri tournament is always perfect for us so we know what to work on and prepare for the season
But when the season kicks off we will adjust what we have and just play rugby and try to finish strong in our season here in Utah then we look at what is ahead of us after."
Both Herriman and LCA look diligently for competition outside of Utah
and certainly the HS National Championships is part of all of that
Both teams went 2-1 last year; Herriman finished 3rd as a single-school

I will always remember the kind hearted person that he was
We were really close in high school and even after we split I still thought of him
I actually asked our friend Zach a few years ago if he has heard from him or had his number because I wanted to contact him
Wish I could have made contact with him again
He was a great person and will be greatly miss
I have a notebook from our school years still that we would pass back and forth throughout the day to each other
Sending my thoughts and prayers to Dan family and friends
Our thoughts and prayers will be with you
This year, the joint Salt Lake Community College and University of Utah campus in Herriman is celebrating not only its first anniversary but a 34% increase in students as well
“The U and SLCC have a history of strong transfer bridges between our two institutions,” said Taunya Dressler
director of campus & site services and assistant dean of students at SLCC
“The Herriman campus is special because our faculty
staff and students have an opportunity to build relationships with one another in the same space
We provide one-stop resource hubs for our students to support their success in exciting ways.”
Of the 1,000 students enrolled in the class at the Herriman campus, 50 of them are taking upper-division classes through the U. Currently the U offers three majors that can be completed entirely at the Herriman campus—economics
human development and family studies and financial planning and counseling
the U will expand its course offerings into business and education
the U’s assistant dean for Transfer Student Success
it’s uncommon to see a two-year institution and a four-year institution open a joint campus
making the Herriman collaboration an inn innovative example of forward-thinking in higher education
“The southwest quadrant of the valley is not a place either of our institutions have historically been in,” Taylor said
“It’s one of the fastest-growing communities in the state and the country
That this community now has public post-secondary education in their backyard is one of the most exciting things about the campus.”
Building community partnerships has been an important focus of the first year of the Herriman campus
is a really amazing partner to us,” Dressler said
“We have been working to forge strong connections with the local high schools as well as nonprofits
faith organizations and other community groups in Herriman
We are going to continue to give back to the community and let them know we are here for them.”
the relationship between SLCC and the U is not
Forty percent of the U’s transfer students come from SLCC and nearly half of SLCC students transfer to the U
Taylor said students who transfer from SLCC to the U are well prepared to continue their education and graduate from the U at higher rates than students who transfer from other schools
“Our two campuses have worked collectively for a long time to increase access to higher education in the Salt Lake Valley,” Taylor said
“It’s exciting to have a new space for our two schools to physically exist together because it opens up the door for new opportunities
What we learn together at the Herriman campus will help us better support all transfer students moving forward.”
As a marker of the one-year anniversary of the Herriman Campus, SLCC and U leaders have released a a joint statement that affirms their joint commitment to the campus and provides an update on the campus’ shared objectives and goals.
“We value this historic partnership and our commitment to the Herriman Campus remains steadfast,” said T
“The combined efforts of both institutions establish critical pathways leading to student success and myriad opportunities to innovate together.”

Scotty Herriman of South Coffeyville is the recipient of the Oklahoma Leopold Conservation Award
and forestland owners who go above and beyond in their management of soil health
water quality and wildlife habitat on working land
was revealed as the award recipient at the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts’ Annual Meeting on February 25
He and his wife Jo received $10,000 for being selected
Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold
the award recognizes farmers and forestland owners who inspire others with their dedication to environmental improvement
In his influential 1949 book, A Sand County Almanac
Leopold called for “a land ethic,” an ethical relationship between people and the land they own and manage
Oklahoma landowners were encouraged to apply (or be nominated) for the award early last year
Applications were reviewed by an independent panel of agricultural and conservation leaders
The first Oklahoma Leopold Conservation Award was presented to Jimmy and Ginger Emmons of Leedey in 2017
Last year’s award was presented to the Williams Family of Red Rock
Nowata County Farm Bureau members Scotty and Jo Herriman of South Coffeyville were named the recipients of the Oklahoma Leopold Conservation Award at the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts Annual Meeting on Tuesday
The Herrimans’ 2,000-acre farm in northeast Oklahoma sits along the Verdigris River
a fertile river bottom cleared and terraced for growing corn
The road to conservation began in 2007 with a torrential downpour that caused the nearby Verdigris River to crest over 30 feet
breaking a levee that flooded the Herriman’s home along with a local refinery
resulting in 42,000 gallons of oil spilling into the river.
The Herriman’s lost three decades’ worth of topsoil and were left with 13 acres of crops to harvest.
Scotty said poor crop yields in 2008 followed the flood
and he was pushed to consider changing how he farmed.
he adopted no-till practices by incorporating soybeans and strip-till corn
Scotty added cover crops into his rotation starting with cereal rye
which he now sells as seed to farmers for cover crops
The Herrimans have also hosted many farm tours to showcase the soil health benefits of cover crops.
The Herriman Farm was also one site for the Oklahoma Conservation Commission and American Farmland Trust’s “Soil Health Case Studies” in 2022
The study analyzed the financial impacts of conservation practices on 350 acres of the farm
It found the farm’s net income increased by $4 per acre
The Herrimans have been repeat winners in the National Corn Growers Association’s yield contest for dryland corn in Oklahoma
Other sources of pride for Scotty and Jo are their three grown sons
The Herrimans have always been willing to try innovative techniques
they purchased land that included 26-acre Chouteau Lake
The land was full of scattered timber and had poor drainage
Three acres of large trees along the lake act as a riparian area and natural buffer
Several fishing clinics have been hosted at the lake that serves as a popular community resource
Scotty’s passion for working with other conservation-minded people led the governor to appoint him to the Oklahoma Conservation Commission where he served for a decade
He also served as president of the Oklahoma Soybean Association
“The Herriman family has long been at the forefront of implementing sustainable conservation efforts on their farm while sharing the importance of conservation efforts with their fellow Oklahoma agriculturalists,” said Kerry Givens
Oklahoma Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture President
“Their love of the land along with their passion to share their knowledge with fellow agriculturalists has made Scott and Jo pillars in Oklahoma’s agricultural community.”

SALT LAKE CITY — After a cold first quarter
Davis sparked a 46-15 run over two quarters to overcome its early struggles to clinch a spot in the 6A title game Wednesday with a 74-60 win over Layton
with Coleman Atwater leading the way at 18 points and Bode Sparrow pouring in 17 points and three steals
hitting multiple 3-pointers — most of them coming from Karter Miller
Layton controlled every aspect of the game early as Davis got good looks but hit the front rim on nearly every 3-point attempt
hitting 3-pointer after 3-pointer to climb all the way back and trail by 1 point after trailing by 13 points
Davis had a 23-21 lead and had completely flipped the script of the game in four minutes
they have come out with a hot start and we are prepared for it," Sparrow said
"But we took their punch and we punched right back."
Davis led Layton 28-25 after a blistering second quarter that immediately turned the game on its head

Davis used a 20-7 run in the third quarter to extend its lead to 16

The Lancers hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter to add to the comeback
but Davis quickly responded by hitting two of their own to get the lead back up to 16 to hold off Layton's chances

Here’s a recap of the 6A semifinals at the University of Utah on Wednesday
Cale Barclay put on a second-half show at the Jon M
and moved Herriman’s boys basketball team one step away from making history
Barclay tied his career high with 28 points and dominated the second half as the Mustangs away Region 2 rival Corner Canyon 64-55 to keep its hopes alive for a first-ever state championship
“It was a fight,” said Herriman coach Doug Meacham
1 seed in the 6A ranks after winning the region crown
Through all the ups and downs (of the season)
The Mustangs improved their record to 24-2 and advanced to play Davis
a school with a rich basketball tradition that has captured eight boys hoops titles
One of Herriman’s losses was to Corner Canyon
Meachem said he showed his players video of both games in a classroom-type lecture and asked if they noticed a difference
and he tried to coach that from courtside while the gam endured several momentum shifts
Corner Canyon took advantage of the first one
The Chargers rode the scoring of Noah Bendinger to take a 12-point first quarter lead
and coujld have turned the contest into a rout as the 6-foot-8 Barclay struggled against Corner Canyon’s defensive tactics
6-9 center Zach Tanner scored 17 first-half points and teamed with Carlo Mulford to trigger a 9-0 scoring spurt to start the second quarter
Herriman led 33-31 at halftime when Tanner rebounded a missed shot and scored just before the buzzer
“I love how Cale put that (first) half behind him and showed his aggressiveness,” Meacham said
“He can be a force both inside and outside and he put our team on his back when we needed him.”
Barclay scored an old-fashioned three-point play with another rebound basket — and a foul — that clearly frustrated Corner Canyon coach Dan Lunt
Barclay made a shot from distance to set up an even more memorable final stanza
who made 10 of 16 shots and added eight rebounds and five assists
nailed three baskets to start a 6-0 scoring run and Herriman never gave up the lead
Mulford then connected on a three-pointer and Shane Tia drew a charging call on defense moments later that inspired everyone on the Mustangs’ bench and student fan section nearby
“Sometimes those 50-50 calls have to go your way for you to get a win.”
a here-pointer and a tip-in on an inbounds lob play to finish the Chargers
who ended another fine season with an 18-8 record and have won two state titles in the school’s 11 years
“It helps to have been there before,” said Meacham
whose squad lost to eventual champion Lehi in the semis last year
“The kids remember the feeling of playing on this court and know what it’s like.”
Bendinger led Corner Canyon in scoring with 19 points
The Chargers shot 40.4 percent from the field
and the Region 1 co-champs are as evenly matched as they come
You wouldn’t know that based off the result of the two regular season games they played this year with each team running away with a big win
with Davis running away with the 75-55 victory to advance to Thursday’s state championship
1 seed Herriman in the title game at 7:30 p.m
Layton came out fast and led by 12 after the first quarter
but Davis shrugged it off like it was nothing
The Darts prepared knowing Layton has a history of starting strong early
“We play Layton enough to know that they start games really strong
We talked about it before the game; don’t panic
and I was really proud of the guys for sticking with them having the right mindset,” said Davis coach Chad Sims
This played out on the court as Davis opened the second quarter on an 18-0 run with outstanding defense
moving the ball and ultimately holding Layton to just four points in the quarter
“We didn’t want them to come out with the hot start
but we were ready for it and took their punch and we punched right back,” said Davis guard Bode Sparrow
Davis certainly did punch back and kept the punches coming
continuing its response after halftime with another run
this time outscoring Layton 16-2 with multiple big baskets by Coleman Atwater
The Darts had four players in double figures with Coleman Atwater leading the scoring with 18 points and four rebounds
and Bode Sparrow chipping in with 17 points
“There is no moment too big for those guys
Layton didn’t go quietly and used a nine-point run of its own as the third quarter drew to a close attempting to keep the game from running away from them
Davis worked through the press with ball movement
Davis out-assisted Layton in the game 21-4
and its ability to pass around Layton made all the difference
“Layton is a really good help defensive team
They’re big in the middle so we knew if we got to the rim we weren’t going to have a clean shot
We were going to have to move the ball a little bit and guys stepped up and made baskets,” said Sims
Layton was led by Sam Romer who accounted for 23 points in the loss and Karter Miller with 17.
