1/33Bob Jones at Hewitt-Trussville Playoff Baseball.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Evan DudleyBob Jones center fielder Mason Rinehart blasted a go-ahead double in the 10th inning and Tanner Hermesch threw a complete-game shutout as the second-ranked Patriots grabbed a 1-0 victory over No
1 Hewitt-Trussville in Saturday’s 7A quarterfinal playoff series
Bob Jones (35-10) is 1-0 in the best-of-3 series
Robert Chatmon II was issued a 1-out walk in the top of the 10th inning and pinch hitter Elijah Degante struck out to set the stage for Rinehart
who drove the ball deep into center field for a 2-out double that scored Chatmon
“It was a dog fight all game,” Rinehart said
“Everyone on the team gave it everything they had
I knew I had to do it for my boys; we fought and worked hard to get here
The Huskies got a leadoff runner in the bottom half of the frame
followed by a single from Tennessee baseball signee Steele Hall
but Koal Duckett and Cameron Simpson popped out to end the final threat
Christian Helmers got the start on the mound for Hewitt-Trussville (33-3) and gave up a single hit through 8 innings -- a leadoff single in the seventh by Alabama baseball signee Zack Johnson
Helmers walked only two batters and produced 9 strikeouts
but was relieved by Blake Bales in the ninth after hitting his pitch count
The senior went the full distance for the shutout win and issued 12 strikeouts against only 7 hits
because I knew it was going to be a pitcher’s duel
That pitcher (Helmers) pitched his a-- off too,” he said
Stat sheet: Bob Jones – Johnson went 1-of-4 with a single
while Rinehart was 1-of-4 with the go-ahead RBI double in the 10th inning
Hewitt-Trussville – Hall was 2-of-4 with a pair of singles
and Simpson was 1-of-3 with a single -- both were intentionally walked
Jonah Jackson and Cooper Huffman each recorded a hit
Coachspeak: “That was unbelievable high school baseball
The defensive plays both teams were making
going 10 innings on pitch count.” -- Bob Jones’ Jared Smith
“When you get two of the best teams in the state
I walked across the field to shake their pitcher’s hand
I haven’t seen a pitching performance like that in 20 years
That’s what this time of season is; you’re going to get the best of the best
and I don’t think either team made an error
We’ve got to regroup and get ready for Monday.” -- Hewitt-Trussville’s Jeff Mauldin
What’s next: Hewitt-Trussville and Bob Jones will play Game 2 at 4:30 p.m
with a decisive third game to follow if necessary

Appearing on The Hugh Hewitt Show, ALEC President and Chief Economist Jonathan Williams broke down key takeaways from the latest edition of Rich States, Poor States
highlighting what he called “real comeback stories” in Louisiana and West Virginia while pointing to room for improvement in others
Louisiana topped the list for most improved
jumping 13 spots to #18 in the economic outlook rankings
Hewitt asked Williams what drove the dramatic rise
it’s really a great success story of our ALEC legislators coming together with Governor Jeff Landry,” Williams said
“What they did was a 3% flat tax that Governor Landry and the legislature got across the finish line just before the end of the year last year
when paired with the school choice they passed months before
Louisiana is now primed for growth again.”
Louisiana’s sharp rise in the rankings is also a reminder of how regional competition drives reform
In the fast-growing Southeast—home to economic leaders like Florida
and Texas—there’s little room for complacency
Policymakers in Baton Rouge acted decisively
recognizing that standing still in a high-performance neighborhood is equivalent to falling behind
While joking with Williams about an “SEC bias” in the state rankings
Hewitt pointed to another major riser: West Virginia
which climbed from 38th to 16th since the first edition of Rich States
“West Virginia has been a great turnaround story,” Williams responded
“It’s been nearly 20 years in the making
I think they have arguably one of the very best principled
free-market conservative governors in America
who led the school choice victory just a number of years ago.”
where you have education freedom and tax cuts and tax reform going together,” he said
“West Virginia obviously becoming a right-to-work state in the last 10 years.”
The results of those policy reforms are now reflected in migration patterns
After more than a century of steady population loss
New census data suggests that West Virginia recently became a net in-migration state for the first time in state history—a clear sign that free-market policies are delivering tangible results
West Virginia lost population,” he explained
And if it can turn around a state like West Virginia with a 100-year losing track record
which ranked 35th in the new report despite being led by Republican Governor Greg Gianforte
finds itself in a tough regional environment
Surrounded by economic high-performers like the Dakotas
the state has struggled to keep pace—especially in tax policy and labor reform
“This is a shocker for folks that don’t follow state policy
is still not a right-to-work state,” he said
it’s a forced union state with tax rates that are far above what the region has around for its competitor states.”
From policy victories in the Deep South to challenges in the Mountain West
Poor States is more than just a scoreboard—it’s a call to action
States that embrace pro-growth policies like low taxes
Those that fail to adapt are watching opportunity slip away
The success stories of Louisiana and West Virginia prove that meaningful reform is possible—but only if lawmakers are willing to lead with principle

The poet’s debut novel is a transcendent portrait of gay desire that pays homage to the English literary tradition
skilled and epiphanic work which I suspect will meet the same response
It takes its title from William Blake’s poem Milton
which speaks of wandering through “realms of terror and mild moony lustre
in soft sexual delusions of varied beauty” – a line that quite nicely describes the reader’s experience of this book
Its opening recalls – with the sense of a deliberate engagement with literary tradition – TS Eliot’s Four Quartets
or LP Hartley’s The Go-Between: “Time runs faster backwards
arduous and uncertain when taken one by one – unspool quickly … the garden sends its snow upwards
and blooms in reverse.” Our narrator James
a librarian who loved but never desired his husband
Directed by doctors to rest after the “bewildered weeks” that follow his divorce
he returns endlessly to thoughts of his youth
“hoping to find the answer to something left unfinished”
He searches online for properties in the village of Thornmere
where he was once a solitary teen who loved – with disastrous single-minded loyalty – a boy called Luke
He discovers a farmhouse for sale which is achingly familiar; so he is prompted to return to Thornmere in person
and we are plunged into the body of the novel
Hewitt’s profound sincerity of feeling is matched with an almost reckless beauty of expressionNow it is 2002 (some readers will be disquieted to discover this now constitutes “the past”)
while negotiating his sexuality and his attachment to his parents
and to a little brother prone to frightening seizures
Early one autumn morning while delivering milk
he encounters Luke seated on a pile of hessian sacks and flicking ash from a cigarette
His questing and troublesome need for the company and desire of men has found its apotheosis: immediately his life becomes one of “soft sexual delusions”
as his friendship with Luke becomes increasingly intimate and complex
“knowing it would deplete me … what was that
and blond; he is wounded by an enforced separation from his father and given to carelessness and tempers
but capable of watchful kindness and vulnerability
Hewitt’s depiction of an enthralled and uncertain love is painfully convincing
James watches for signs his ardour is returned
and often thinks he sees them – “I imagined an ocean of thought
and I thought … he would let me in.” His suffering is particular and universal
and it makes his love for Luke perilous: “I could not imagine a time when I would not have to hide my desires,” he writes
either suffering nobly or flourishing decadently for the instruction and entertainment of heterosexual readers or characters; he is not expected to represent anything other than himself
There are events here – mysterious figures in dank tunnels
and near-catastrophic accidents – but the novel’s chief propulsion derives from observing James’s developing consciousness
and this ironic distance compels the worried reader on
Hewitt is superb in his loving and acute depictions of the natural world
which he confers with Lawrentian significance: the “bright sky-blue blankets of forget-me-nots … ruched in the dappled light” are all of a piece with James’s burgeoning and secretive sexuality
This is not an author submitting to the tiresome notion that a good novel is one which does all it can to efface artistry
or to slip down the gullet with as little flavour or friction as a glass of tap water
just as a painting or concerto must be worked at – the imagery is fitted exquisitely to the mood
the structure designed to trouble the reader with the rapid fluidity of time
but contained within the novel’s atmosphere
I was arrested by the presentation of a version of Englishness which is perhaps best arrived at by some remove
but lives and teaches in Dublin; his mother is Irish
There is consequently a sensibility at work here which is intricately familiar with and fond of a particular kind of Englishness
which in clumsier hands might appear trite
farmhouses with patterned china ranged on the dresser
and boys fishing for perch in the canal – all of this treated without the embarrassment that might plague a British novelist
and offset with equally English images of desolate underpasses beneath main roads dividing village from village
or of loose tarpaulin flapping on a half-derelict barn
and within the canon of English literature: Hewitt is never imitative of Hardy or Lawrence or Gerard Manley Hopkins
but allows the novel to speak into their echoes
in which profound sincerity of feeling – and the treatment of sexual desire as something close to sacred – is matched with an almost reckless beauty of expression

we had him look back at a cover of TV Guide Magazine from December 9
“This is the throwback of throwbacks for TV Guide Magazine
I’ve talked about this edition for years
‘The Best Show You’re Not Watching,'” he said
you’re the best of the not happenings
but we also knew that the whole point of it was to talk about the fact that we were an endangered series
that not enough people were watching and our ratings weren’t high enough
so I want to say we had 13 million viewers every week
but because there was so fewer — all these streaming services didn’t exist
13 million was just a death knell you were going to get canceled.”
He recalled that the cover “helped a lot
There are bits and pieces of publicity that can come out that may or may not register with people
I honestly think this moved the needle because this was still in everybody’s homes or grocery counters
… This was probably the most widespread sort of word that got out about our show and at a time where
‘We have no idea how long we’re going to get to go at this rate
The network believes in what we’re doing
if we don’t get more people watching
we’ll get canceled eventually.’ And so yeah
Ratings started to stabilize because new shows can kind of diminish over time
This is the first time I’ve seen it in decades probably
“When Jennifer Love Hewitt came onto the show
But when Jennifer Love was cast and we started playing scenes together
it was pretty clear that there was a really great chemistry between us and a really sort of beautiful
but really beautiful innocence to it,” Wolf shared
“For a show that was really about these young teenage characters
shows weren’t telling stories like that and showing relationships like that,” he continued
if I get a chance to work together with her or any of the cast of Party of Five

Ahead of a huge Round 2 matchup against defending Class 7A champion Bob Jones
Hewitt-Trussville coach Jeff Mauldin isn’t letting a moment slip by
“It gives the kids something that I remember for the rest of their lives,” the coach said
we were in a quarterfinals series versus Bob Jones vs
it’s our job as coaches to create moments and create memories for the kids that last a lifetime.”
1 Huskies are set to host second-ranked Bob Jones in a decisive playoff series
The winner will advance to the state semifinals against Hoover or Tuscaloosa County
The first pitch is set for Friday at 4:30 p.m.
with Game 2 to follow; a decisive Game 3 would be played on Saturday at 1 p.m.
we didn’t start Game 1 until 6:40 and Game 2 started after 9 p.m.
I’m sure they’re going to bring a ton of people from Madison down here
You’ve got to appreciate it because I know Bob Jones has been on a significant run the last several years
but you also have to take some time and enjoy it.”
Hewitt-Trussville advanced to the second round with a sweep of Sparkman
while Bob Jones claimed the series with a thrilling Game 3 victory over Thompson to advance
The Patriots were down by 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh but used a 3-run homer from Tanner Hermesch and a walk-off solo shot from Myles Hammonds to escape with a victory
With the “unbelievable” series against the Warriors under the team’s belt
Bob Jones coach Jared Smith anticipates another great one for the state in a matchup against an ultra-talented Hewitt-Trussville squad
it’s something our kids will remember for a while just being able to play in this type of environment
and it’s going to be a tough place to play,” Smith said
“There’s going to be a lot of neutral fans that just want to come see some really good baseball
there’s already 15 signed seniors on both teams combined
Fifteen college-level players and that’s not even counting the underclassmen on either team that are college-level guys.”
Among some of the heavy-hitting senior prospects set to take the field for Bob Jones are Hammonds
standout right fielder Dillon Adkins and Shelton State signee Tanner Hermesch
Steele Hall — a projected first-round pick in the MLB Draft — leads a Hewitt-Trussville squad that also includes a duo of UAB pitching signees in righty Christian Helmers and lefty Jacob Francis
Mauldin said the talent on the field can’t go unstated
especially in a season where so many quality teams remain in the Class 7A playoffs
but you can flip that and nothing be different,” Mauldin said
“They’re one of the best teams in our state
I’m not sure about how they break down seniors
but I know they’ve got a lot of college-level kids
This will be the first matchup of the season between the two teams
with the added factor of unfamiliarity playing a factor in preparation ahead of the matchup
we watched a ton of film called a lot of coaches,” Smith said
you can find a lot of people on Twitter and social media
“They’re a really well-coached team that plays really
and then they’ve got a couple of good arms behind him
No doubt that those guys have been throwing strikes and they play elite defense
they’ll score four or five runs and then they shut the team out more times than they don’t.”
with Mauldin saying that accommodations will be made to the ballpark as the fans for the second-round series look to add up
both coaches are confident that the series will provide some great baseball and an incredible display of talent
“It’s really neat this series is getting a lot of notice,” he said
“We get a lot of media requests for the weekend
but I think it’s been a great crowd and a great atmosphere
and I think baseball has been pretty big here for a while
more people outside of moms and dads and grandparents are having an interest
and our community does a great job of supporting our teams that advance
our girls basketball; when they go to the final four
we’re taking four or five busses downtown to the civic center

“Chardon football is special not because of a coach or any one person

Chardon had endured three straight losing seasons when Hewitt was hired in 2011

“They’re always looking around the corner
asking how to stay number one for the next decade,” Williams said of Utah’s 18-year run as the top state in economic outlook
That’s why “Utah has been a pacesetter for a very long time.” He credited Utah’s consistency to real policy reforms
the adoption of Truth in Taxation for property taxes
Hewitt, who traditionally runs through the top and bottom states during his annual Rich States, Poor States review
broke down this year’s results with a highlight of top states including Utah
and North Dakota as well as bottom states Connecticut
There’s a common denominator for each category
“What we consistently see are bottom states that have big government policies across the board
and then they pay special favors and pick winners and losers based on who has the best lobbyists in the state capital,” said Williams
top states have a very free-market outlook with low taxes across the board while incentivizing entrepreneurship and small businesses
It’s about “getting government out of the way of businesses and individuals
versus having government be empowered to make all the decisions,” he explained
He also highlighted that the Rich States, Poor States report isn’t just a one-time snapshot. Visitors to RichStatesPoorStates.org can see an 18-year time series tracking each state’s economic outlook and performance
“You can look back and see where your state ranked 10 or 15 years ago versus where it is today,” Williams noted
Ohio native Hewitt accused Michigan native Williams of putting his “thumb on the scale” as explanation for why the Great Lakes State outranked the Buckeyes
“You’ve got football going for you right now
“But the economics are still okay in Michigan—thanks in large part to leaders like Speaker Matt Hall holding the line against Governor Whitmer’s policies.”
The conversation also touched on education freedom
an increasingly important complement to economic freedom that included praise for the spread of universal school choice across 15 states
the combination of education freedom and economic freedom is a beautiful thing,” Williams emphasized
noting that Utah’s top ranking reflects its holistic approach to pro-growth policy reforms
For policymakers and citizens alike, Williams made it clear: the path to prosperity is no secret. States that limit government, cut taxes, and empower individuals consistently come out ahead—and Rich States, Poor States offers the roadmap
small business owners and taxpayers across the country understand that growth-oriented reforms mean increased opportunity for all

Seán Hewitt’s debut novel rests upon pillars propped up by queer stories already central to the canon
Its plot—a young coming of age story disrupted by the introduction of a new sort of love
set against the backdrop of a humming English village—may bring to mind the work of writers such as Philippe Besson
a reader might expect to have a steady grasp on Hewitt’s narrative before it can even begin; however
the novel reaches beyond assumption in its ingenuity
Hewitt doesn’t make an attempt at overturning the trope
Set over the course of a year in the early aughts
Heaven’s young protagonist James feels his life becoming intertwined with another boy
With hazy vision in recounting this first love—clarity overtaken by the disorient of memory
of which modern-day James makes no attempt at countering—he spirals in the echo of infatuation
remembering his high-school pursuit of a connection unlike anything he’d ever felt before and has yet to feel since
centered around young James and his friend Luke
Heaven is in its questioning of our foundational impressions of love
our ability to truly offer it to one another
What becomes clear as the story progresses
The complicated dynamic between gay identity and near-impossible standards of idealism has been explored before, ranging from meditations on body image to examinations of “Best Little Boy In the World” syndrome
These critiques—or this lived experience—feel silently present throughout Open
though are never brought to the forefront in any explicit way
we are able to recognize the unraveling markers of this queer exchange in Hewitt’s story
Heaven’s central narrative is set shortly after James has come out to his family and surrenders to having been outed at his school
And while neither his home or social life come with frightening markers of homophobia
it’s a queer yearning for closeness—closeness to family
closeness to a lover—that is thrust to the center and made elusive by the continuing pursuit of idealism
In referring to his parents’ acceptance of him—having shed an initial closeted performance—James begins to feel the weight of the new role he’s stepped into: “They had chosen me over the village
and now I couldn’t be anything but perfect.”
But it’s in the coalescing of James’s personal performance with the gilded desire that he projects onto Luke that the weight begins to feel suffocating
Queer adolescence spent in solitude leaves you reaching—at times
who among us imagines a love or a future full of complication
so high above the clouds that their mist keeps the reader—and James for that matter—from seeing him with blemished clarity
chasing after a dream of the boy there in front of him that may be as intangible as the shimmering mist surrounding him
But the fog serves another purpose as well
James nurses fantasies of being swept away and considers the feel of another boy’s hand on his body—and stops short of wondering how it might feel to truly be seen by Luke
“I would make myself into whatever shape he wanted
The tortured close friendship between two young people still unaware of themselves and unable to speak with language they haven’t yet learned is a cultural cliche at this point
cliches earn their name precisely because they’re common
and that does not make these friendships any less special
The closeness shared between James and Luke is heartwarming to read
The world he creates in his storytelling is well-realized—though
buried beneath the colorful romance is a foundation of tangled insecurity
The rapid turning of the seasons keeps the reader in suspense
whether or not this soil will allow for blooming

and there was a sheet of untethered mist hanging over it
I carried on past the shed and turned carefully to look behind it
Heaven is a soaring demonstration that “heaven” is a place that we ourselves create
gilded over and rippling in our imaginations—and that it may be impossible to reach for just that reason
we can lay our faith somewhere else: on the potential of new

Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights
CALIFORNIA - DECEMBER 09: Jennifer Love Hewitt appears on "The Jennifer Hudson Show" airing ..

Hollywood actress and producer Jennifer Love Hewitt—beloved for her roles in Party of Five
and ABC’s biopic on Audrey Hepburn—recently made headlines by standing against ageist stereotypes and the constant scrutiny of her appearance
Because Jennifer’s experience teaches us invaluable lessons about how leaders can combat ageism
and reject our culture’s unhealthy obsession with youth
Hewitt’s reflections call out society’s deeply ingrained negative attitudes toward aging and expose three key forms of ageism: institutional ageism
where policies and practices marginalize older individuals; interpersonal ageism
where biases are expressed in relationships; and self-directed ageism
which limits personal potential and self-worth
I believe it’s on leaders to recognize these biases and ensure they aren’t perpetuating them further
These negative stereotypes don’t just harm individuals and impact their quality of life—they limit creativity and progress
I do believe tackling ageism offers an incredible opportunity for the right brands to stand out—and engage audiences—by rewriting the narrative and celebrating aging as powerful
Freddie Prinze Jr and Jennifer Love Hewitt looking up in fear in a scene from the film 'I Still Know ..
As I emphasize in my book The Kim Kardashian Principle
powerful brands build strong emotional connections with their audiences
And some super powerful brands have a knack for identifying underlying societal tensions—I describe these as unspoken truths or contradictions that many feel but rarely express
the assumption that older people always aspire to stay young
many older individuals—and Jennifer Love Hewitt would agree—appreciate their age and the wisdom it brings
yet they often feel pressured to conform to a narrative that denies this perspective
and give voice to these suppressed sentiments
creating a sense of liberation and and enormously strong connection with its audience
Jennifer Love Hewitt’s story puts a personal face on the realities of age discrimination— and humanizes it
Fans and critics alike have projected ageist attitudes onto her
expecting her to look the same as she did in her 20s—a standard she refuses to accept
She has also described digital ageism—the harsh comments she faces on social media—as “hurtful.” These experiences highlight the quiet but pervasive impact of implicit ageism
which shapes social norms and reinforces harmful stereotypes
restricting opportunities and reducing life satisfaction
it’s sold the idea that youth equals beauty
excluding older individuals—especially those over 50
Dove’s research reveals that two-thirds of women feel pressure to look younger
creating a toxic cycle of unrealistic standards
even preteen girls are being drawn into this narrative
using anti-aging products— many out of the fear of aging and before they’ve even had the chance to grow up
Jennifer Love Hewitt’s story is not just about rejecting unfair standards on the basis of age; it’s a rallying cry for leaders to rethink how they see aging—and how they position it in their brands
I’m convinced Jennifer Love Hewitt‘ story is also yet another indicator of a cultural trend towards anti-ageism that I have been observing for a while and that I believe is only going to gain further momentum
Let’s celebrate aging not as a problem to be solved but as a privilege that brings wisdom
I’ve always been a fan of Dove’s campaign for real beauty
The "Campaign for Real Beauty" effectively addressed and ‘released’ a deep societal tension: the media's portrayal of a singular standard of beauty as the ideal
When women were asked about the qualities they found beautiful
their responses revealed a diverse and expansive range of definitions that challenged this narrow narrative
The campaign celebrated this variety by featuring models of different shapes
emphasizing that beauty is multifaceted and deeply personal
It shifted the focus from outward appearance to how individuals feel about themselves
redefining beauty as a reflection of confidence and self-acceptance
positioning aging as both a privilege and a source of power
Celebrating the 67th anniversary of their iconic Dove beauty bar
Dove featured real women over 60 as vibrant
Instead of leaning into tired stereotypes—or just as bad not bothering to have a conscious conversation around ageist beliefs and the impact of ageism—the campaign celebrates these people ages
and highlights individuality: Maureen practices headstands
and Althea indulges in Chinese food while lounging in a bubble bath
These women defy conventional expectations of what it means to look
challenging notions of frailty and embracing joy
disruptive idea that strikes at the very tension Jennifer Love Hewitt and so many others have experienced
Society often tells women that aging is something to fight against
yet Dove—and Hewitt—remind us it’s something to celebrate
I think women really come into this… acceptance of themselves and comfortability in their 40s that is beautiful
Interestingly, this same energy is echoed in Nicole Kidman’s Babygirl
a film tackling the societal discomfort with age-gap romances
the film explores a 29-year age gap and challenges the double standards surrounding age in relationships
“If we see a movie where the male actor is the same age as the female actor
Which is insane.” She emphasizes that we’ve internalized the male gaze and patriarchal expectations
and freeing ourselves from these norms is no small feat
the film and director looks to normalize age gap differences in relationships
The broader cultural shift can be seen in other films like Gabrielle Union’s The Perfect Find and Anne Hathaway’s The Idea of You
which are redefining what love and aging look like on screen
proving that beauty and confidence don’t have an expiration date
they serve as a wake-up call for leaders across industries
Brands have a responsibility to reject harmful narratives and embrace aging as a privilege—not a problem
It’s time for leaders to empower all generations by making aging a symbol of strength
and growth—i’m building bridges with younger generations

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s candidness about her journey—from navigating motherhood to building professional resilience—underscores the power of fostering intergenerational and community relationships
Brands can take a cue by connecting authentically with consumers across the age spectrum
recognizing that people’s needs and identities naturally evolve as they age
only 12% of UK advertisements feature individuals aged 55 and older in lead roles—and when they do
they are often cast in roles that portray them as needing assistance
There is no doubt in my mind that this must change
So how would I say brand leaders can actively fight ageism
They can promote inclusive and diverse representation in marketing
countering visual ageism; advocate for laws that address workplace inequities; and support educational efforts such as the APA Community Network or the Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities
systemic challenges like dependency ratios and financial insecurity can be addressed through tailored
forward-thinking solutions that empower older demographics
brand leaders can drive meaningful societal change
Rejecting harmful narratives and reframing aging as a privilege and a source of strength isn’t just about doing what’s right—it’s about staying relevant in a world that is increasingly valuing inclusivity and progress
Ageism affects far more than individuals—it ripples across industries
Older demographics often face systemic challenges
such as disparities in insurance coverage and limited support from insurers
Countries like Germany have taken significant steps to combat institutional ageism
implementing government-backed initiatives that provide a blueprint for others to follow
is essential for creating equitable policies that align with modern social values
This effort isn’t just morally right; it’s also strategically relevant
Younger generations gravitate toward brands with a strong sense of societal purpose
and educating them on the harm caused by ageist behavior fosters empathy and awareness
Success lies in bridging intergenerational practices through thoughtful employment relationships
ensuring a collaborative and inclusive environment for all age groups

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s advocacy—and those of many other American women film producers
and American women television producers—make one thing clear: confronting discrimination on the basis of age demands courage
this means reimagining the narratives surrounding aging
and creating opportunities that celebrate the potential and power of individuals at every stage of life
"It's hard because I think as humans
we want to evolve … we want to have lines on our faces
and you know our boobs be lower from breast-feeding our children
or you know our butt's bigger," she said with a laugh
you just want to have the freedom to be whoever you are at that age
And it's hurtful sometimes when people reject you as you are verbally on Instagram or the internet because they're having a hard time adjusting to it."
Hewitt’s example shows us that aging is not a limitation but a source of strength
It’s a reminder that every chapter of life offers new opportunities to connect
I believe the fight against ageism should be a top priority for leaders yet few brands seem to be making any effort to debunk the inaccurate stereotypes out there or reimagining the negative stereotypes of ageism
our fight against ageism should start by questioning our own ageist beliefs in order to then acknowledge the existence of explicit or implicit ageism
and also the negative impact and effects of ageism
and dismantling benevolent stereotypes are no longer optional—they’re essential steps toward a more inclusive and equitable future
Here’s what I believe: it’s time to redefine aging
and create a world where every generation thrives unapologetically—geared less by age and more by possibility

And if you need to submit multiple state returns
it's also included in the price.
Jackson Hewitt’s competitors charge anywhere from $15 to $65 per state filing
No tax service is perfect, so Jackson Hewitt does have some drawbacks. Its bare-bones software lags behind competitors like TurboTax and H&R Block -- with no real option to upload files or tax forms -- and its customer support for online filing is limited
There’s also very limited contextual tax help.
But if you’re comfortable filing your own taxes and don’t require any bells and whistles or expert assistance
Jackson Hewitt’s bargain tax software could be a good choice
*$25 flat fee is for online DIY filing only
Filing in-branch or at retail locations may cost more
Jackson Hewitt works best for bargain hunters who just want to get their taxes done
If you have multiple state returns to file because you either earned income in multiple states or work in one state and live in another
Jackson Hewitt is also a great choice.
The company lets you file unlimited state returns after paying $25 for federal filing. Some options like Cash App Taxes don’t allow multiple state returns at all, despite it being free. FreeTaxUSA will charge you $14.99 per state return
If you want the ability to upload multiple tax forms, access online expert tax help or just have a complicated return, try another online tax service or consult a tax professional
Jackon Hewitt’s online software isn’t as user-friendly as top competitors’.
I recommend only confident filers use Jackson Hewitt’s online do-it-yourself option
All tax information must be entered manually
This software also doesn’t offer the opportunity to upload your previous year's tax return to get you started and save you some time filling out personal information
Like H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt offers tax preparation services both online and in person with a tax pro, including in about 2,600 Walmart stores across the US
The cost of filing your taxes with Jackson Hewitt in person varies depending on the income type
Jackson Hewitt’s DIY filing option costs $25
which includes federal and unlimited state returns
All the IRS forms and schedules are included
but you have to make sure that you’ve completed each one required for your particular situation and that the information is accurate
There’s very minimal guidance from the software to help you fill out complicated forms
When you create a Jackson Hewitt Online account you'll need to verify your email, set up two-factor authentication, and create some security questions. Make sure you create a Jackson Hewitt Online account, which is different from Jackson Hewitt Tax Services
if you plan to take advantage of the company's $25 do-it-yourself filing fee
Jackson Hewitt is arguably the most bare-bones tax software I've tested this year -- up there with Cash App Taxes
But at least the latter offers the option to upload a previous year's tax return to get you started and save you time on filing out your personal info
while many other tax services allow you to upload a PDF or snap a photo of your tax form
The one exception is Jackson Hewitt's ADP integration
which allows you to import your W-2 using your employer's identification number if it's a human resources software company client
Be sure to double-check the information on your tax return
Jackson Hewitt said I owed New York a substantial amount in taxes until I realized that local and state tax boxes weren't filled in after importing my second of two W-2s
Jackson Hewitt’s online tax software uses a simple yes and no question-and-answer model to guide you through your tax return
Anytime you answer "yes" to a question
you are prompted to fill out the corresponding tax form
if you tell Jackson Hewitt Online that you have interest to report
Deductions you claim will follow the same process
You can also choose the forms that apply to you if you know your tax situation well enough.
You can't get guidance from a tax expert while filing your DIY tax return
Help and info can be found by clicking on "Help" at the top of the screen
you'll find an FAQ page with dozens of basic questions ranging from your federal and state taxes
Clicking on any question will generate a one- to two-sentence answer right under.
Scroll all the way down on the Help page to find a search box where you can search a specific topic
You can also email Jackson Hewitt your question or launch a free live chat session
Jackson Hewitt’s online tax preparation software offers a couple of notable guarantees to DIY tax filers:
If you create an account with Jackson Hewitt and decide the service isn't for you
Click on the same My Account tab and scroll down to the bottom
Select “Delete your account.”
Jackson Hewitt’s online tax preparation software has just about everything you need to file your taxes for a great price
The service works best for DIY filers who are okay with manual data entry
don't need much in the way of help and support and know how to report their income
Those with complicated returns or filers who want more of a handholding experience should look elsewhere -- namely TurboTax, H&R Block or TaxSlayer if you are a self-employed worker. You can also file in-person at a Jackson Hewitt location

Here’s a quick glimpse at one of many impressive outcomes HPU graduates achieve
View More Graduate Profiles
Major: Interior Design; minor in Visual Merchandising Design
Post-graduation plans: Mary Kate Hewitt is heading to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville
Virginia to pursue her Master’s degree in Architecture
How HPU helped you get there: “HPU has helped me grow in so many remarkable ways since my freshman year
introverted student with a very narrow perspective on what I was capable of achieving
I was unsure of my abilities and often held myself back from pursuing my true passions
it didn’t take long for me to find a supportive and motivating community at HPU — one that included inspiring professors and peers who encouraged me to push past my limitations and set ambitious goals
I often felt like I wasn’t “smart enough” to pursue this career
and the fear of failure held me back from fully committing to the idea
I questioned whether I could handle the challenges and intensity of the field
But as I became more immersed in the HPU community
I began to realize that I had the potential to achieve my goals
The professors at HPU played a crucial role in changing my mindset
They not only helped me build technical skills and knowledge in design but also instilled in me the confidence to believe in my own potential.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “One of the most influential mentors I’ve had during my time at High Point University is Brandon Jones
Instructor of Home Furnishings and Interior Design
From the very first day of my freshman year
Jones has been a constant source of knowledge
helping shape both my academic and personal growth
I’ve had the privilege of sharing many remarkable experiences with him
an experience that was both culturally enriching and professionally inspiring
I’ve had the honor of serving as his Student Instructor Assistant for a freshman studio course
where I’ve been able to support new students while further developing my own leadership and teaching skills
His mentorship has not only deepened my understanding of the field but also encouraged me to continuously push my limits
pursue new challenges and embrace opportunities for growth.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “One of the most impactful experiences I’ve had at HPU has been my time in the Student Government Association
I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Class of 2025’s Events Coordinator
working alongside our incredible President
who has graciously entrusted me with this role
SGA truly exemplifies how much this institution values its students
Planning large-scale events that honor traditions and celebrate our class has been deeply meaningful to me
and the Class of 2025 for the opportunity to serve and contribute to our shared experiences
I look forward to ending the year on a high note!”
How you used Career & Professional Development: “I have relied on the Office of Career & Professional Development for assistance with resume formatting and LinkedIn optimization
ensuring that I consistently present myself in the best possible light
The guidance I received was always insightful
providing me with invaluable tools and strategies that I will carry with me as I embark on the next phase of my journey.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success
“The physical appeal of this campus initially drew me in
but gaining a deeper understanding of the care and detail that goes into its spaces was an unexpected and rewarding experience
stepping outside to the sounds of classical music and fountains has helped me relax and reconnect with my surroundings
This beautiful and inspiring environment has not only enhanced my appreciation for purposeful design but also deepened my understanding of student-centered spaces.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success
“Attending High Point University has been an incredibly transformative experience
equipping me with confidence and networking skills that I never thought possible
Through my involvement in various campus activities
such as working at the High Point Furniture Market
and serving as an ambassador for Undergraduate Admissions
I have had the privilege of meeting a wide range of amazing individuals
These experiences have helped me break down the barriers that once intimidated me
allowing me to confidently engage with people from all walks of life
I now feel comfortable introducing myself to others
and gaining valuable insights that will undoubtedly serve me throughout my personal and professional journey
HPU has truly opened doors to opportunities and taught me the importance of communication and relationship-building in a way I had never imagined before.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation
“I deeply commend High Point University for fostering such a remarkable community
and I am forever grateful for the incredible friendships I have formed here
The sense of family is truly at the heart of this institution
and it’s what makes this place so extraordinary
While I take great pride in my own personal achievements
I also celebrate the successes of my peers
I feel incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such inspiring and driven individuals
each of whom is carving out a unique and impressive path for their future
The energy and passion of those around me continue to motivate and inspire me every day.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Say yes to something that pushes you outside of your comfort zone
Many of the most transformative experiences in my life happened because I took that leap
You never know what you’re capable of until you try
and stepping into the unknown can lead you to incredible people and passions
These experiences will broaden your perspective
constantly reminding you that you can achieve anything you set your mind to
Embrace everything this university has to offer
more confident version of yourself by the time you’re sitting in the commencement crowd — someone who’s grown
learned and become a positive force in the world.”

with cries of "C'mon!" after winning a couple of crucial points but was no match for the experienced Basilashvili
"Cruz showed up and played very well," Basilashvili said on court
I would have been pooping my pants to have to come out on the Grand Slam court and play a match like this."
made the first of his 20 straight Australian Open appearances as a 15-year-old qualifier in 1997
He went on to reach the top of the world rankings at age 20 and won Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and the US Open
Bernard Tomic
one of a string of talents who have been touted as a potential successor to Hewitt as an Australian Grand Slam winner
also bowed out in the opening round of qualifying at Melbourne Park on Tuesday
Now 32, Tomic plays most of his tennis on the Challenger circuit. His bid to return to the main draw at his home Grand Slam for the first time since 2022 lasted only the hour it took him to lose 6-3, 6-1 to Jozef Kovalik
who was once ranked as high as 17th in the world and made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon as a teenage qualifier in 2011
reached the fourth round of the Australian Open three times
Angela Hewitt and Johannes Brahms are both antiquarians at heart
immersing themselves in very old music—she to perform it in concert
he to deepen his understanding of composition
If Hewitt’s recital at the 92nd Street Y Wednesday night had an overall title
it might be “The Long and Winding Road to Brahms.” With stops along the way at Mozart
it was a road paved with fantasy and freedom on one hand and concentration and rigor on the other
leading to a climactic second half consisting of variations by Handel paired with Brahms’s famous variations on Handel
much admired for her performances and recordings of the music of J.S
is currently engaged in recording all of Mozart’s piano sonatas
So naturally expectations were high Wednesday for an insightful performance of Mozart’s great C minor diptych
(Opinions differ as to whether Mozart intended these two works to be performed together as a sort of super-sonata
but generations of programming practice have affirmed the thematic and spiritual links between them.)
fantasia was a musical genre that grew out of the improvisations with which he used to wow audiences
so a feeling of on-the-spot inspiration is even more important here than with other genres
Hewitt’s deliberate performance on Wednesday had the air of a conscientious player following instructions in a 240-year-old score
This mercurial work that startlingly anticipates Beethoven’s tempests and Schubert’s dark musings seemed to lack the impulse that turns keys and hammers into music
The more structured sonata developed a kind of momentum in performance that helped solve the impulse problem
Hewitt’s chord voicing and singing tone livened up as well
The acerbic mood of Mozart in C minor came through clearly
Hewitt took both of the composer’s indicated repeats—the exposition and the development-recapitulation—although one could question
whether she made the second time around worth the trip
The Adagio had a singer’s natural timing and inflection
although one was still overly aware of all those hammers hopping around inside the box
No doubt Hewitt would object to being pigeonholed as a Bach specialist
but it must be said that any disappointments in her Mozart performance were quickly forgotten when she tore into the Leipzig master’s dazzling Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue
In music that can come off as just so much aimless zipping around in scales and arpeggios
Hewitt caught the fire of in-the-moment inspiration with (to mix metaphors) the fury and fluidity of rapids in a river
The pianist was literally shaking on the bench from physical involvement as the fantasy progressed to impassioned recitative and deep sighs
Tension was relieved—but not entirely—as the sinuous chromatic fugue subject entered alone
then slithered through the fugue’s many episodes
Hewitt’s mastery of distinct voices flowing in clear counterpoint was second to none
in a performance richly satisfying on every level
The chaconne originated as a stately dance in a slow three-to-a-bar
Bach and his contemporaries added variations to make a brilliant and impressive instrumental piece
HWV 435 (“Version 4,” for those who are keeping score) was a fine example
ranging widely from keyboard razzle-dazzle to deep pathos to a cantabile duet over an expressive bass line
And so the stage was set for an even more ambitious work
Brahms’s Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel
more than a century separated Handel’s Chaconne from this piece
a period that saw Bach’s “Goldberg” Variations and Beethoven’s “Diabelli,” not to mention the enormous development of the piano and pianism
The young Brahms’s brawny inspirations contributed mightily to the latter
Hewitt’s performance on Wednesday seemed to take little note of all this
Her dainty delivery of Handel’s shapely little theme seemed to carry over into Brahms’s variations
rendering many of them as keyboard curiosities and miniatures
and listener and pianist met in the middle
The pianist’s sense of counterpoint allowed Brahms’s intertwining lines to float into consciousness without forcing
which Hewitt scrupulously observed and always varied in a fresh way
her leisurely contemplation of each variation pulled the piece apart a bit
The notion of a Brahms variation set as a Schumann-like cycle of character pieces with a common theme was never more evident
Hewitt took the fugue at a similarly deliberate pace
but here Brahms’s counterpoint was less subtle than Bach’s or his own earlier in the piece
and more headlong momentum in the playing would have been welcome
But the pianist ground through it and did ringing justice to the powerful final pages
Her Fazoli concert grand sustained the big final chord for a long time
until she released it to a storm of applause
The single encore was Mendelssohn’s Song Without Words
