The former Kahler/Hibbing Park Hotel is receiving an overhaul under its new owner Bodanapu acquired the property located at 1402 E It was also the site of the former Grandma’s in the Park Bar and Grill which is not affiliated with the Grandma’s restaurant chain of Duluth The hotel had long served as a popular gathering place for wedding parties class reunions and special events before permanently closing during the pandemic “Most events that occurred in the city of Hibbing were held in this hotel,” said Mayor Pete Hyduke and it's an economic driver for your region and your community It's all the spinoff economic development that happens when you stay in a community that has been lost.” the Hampton Inn Hibbing was built to help fill the hospitality void “The city had conducted a study around what the need for hotel rooms was,” Hibbing Economic Development Authority Community Development Director Betsy Olivanti said The 2021 study indicated that the newly constructed Hampton was operating at 80%-90% capacity with visitors staying for various youth sport league activities and tournaments year-round.  With the exception of the existing Hibbing Inn & Suites or the new Hampton Inn visitors otherwise opted to stay roughly 30 minutes away when unable to find available local lodging And with the events that are throughout the year I know a lot of the afraid of anything that is complex in nature.” With a technical and engineering background Bodanapu had experience with single-family homes gas stations and apartments in the Twin Cities The initial cost of renovation was estimated to be around $2.5 million given the disastrous condition of the building along with rising inflation and construction costs the project has now run upward of $7 million “I still have more work to do,” Bodanapu added The building was completely gutted to replace its insulation “More than 3,000 tons of stuff was taken out from the building in order to clean up and do it right,” Bodanapu said The hotel was renamed to honor Hibbing’s 150-year mining history consisted of 56 rooms (16 suites and 40 standard units) restaurant and 34 more rooms are anticipated to challenges of aging and outdated infrastructure,” explained Eliot Dixon Communication & Programs Specialist with HPU “With 50% of Hibbing watermains beyond their expected service life our residents are subject to an average of 25 significant watermain breaks per year These breaks undoubtedly have a negative effect on the quality of service provided by the utility.” Dixon said that Hibbing’s water is tested daily and is safe to drink He went on to say that any discoloration of water being seen by Hibbing residents is likely the result of aging pipes and rusting he recommends people run their water for a couple of minutes and then they will see the clear water again He continued that HPU has been taking “bold” actions to address to address the issue Dixon cited the launch of HPU’s Watermain Capital Improvement Plan in 2022 as an example Dixon said the plan is “a 10-year strategic initiative aimed at annually replacing at least 2% of the water distribution system Since the adoption of this plan HPU has replaced 17,000 feet of watermains over 7 projects and will be replacing another 11,000 feet in 2025 alone.”HPU is also using “trenchless” replacement techniques and say reconsider an application from Hibbing Taconite after ruling the agency acted outside its statutory authority The appeals court ordered the DNR to reconsider a wetland replacement plan application from the mining company Hibbing Taconite challenged the agency in court after it placed a condition on the application’s approval a third-party contractor unintentionally damaged a wetland that was not included in the wetland permit for that project Hibbing Taconite notified the DNR of the damage and submitted a wetland restoration plan The company later notified the DNR that it was "impracticable to continue trying to restore" the wetland It tried to amend its plan to instead use surplus wetland credits to offset the impacts The DNR approved the plan amendment but conditioned the approval on the company amending its permit to mine which was issued decades ago and amended several times since The appeals court ruled the Minnesota Legislature did not give the DNR the authority to condition its approval as it did "The DNR certainly has the authority to commence a process to endeavor to achieve its end goal — make changes to a permit to mine — but the DNR does not have the express or implied authority to force a party to affirmatively request those changes that the agency wants made," the opinion stated The court told the agency to reconsider Hibbing Taconite’s application to amend the wetland replacement plan without the condition meaning it will be considered and used by courts faced with similar issues in the future The agency has the option to appeal the decision to the Minnesota Supreme Court Charges are now filed against two men in connection with an assault and high speed pursuit from last Friday in Hibbing are accused of beating up another man with a wooden handle Both defendants have addresses in Illinois The criminal complaint said the victim told police the men attacked him because he owed them money He ended up needing stitches for a hockey has once again become a powerhouse in the Northland Hibbing/Chisholm hockey is on the right side of the record books “Everyone knows Hibbing hockey was good back in the day,” said Tate Swanson “We won a couple state championships and we want to prove that we’re still good to this day.” They’ve been able to prove it the past few years Aaron Jamnick graduated from Hibbing High School in 2009 and later went on to play Division I hockey at Providence College Those roads led him back to the Bluejackets program though where he’d been an assistant since 2016 it’s not that big of a switch because he had a lot to say previously and now just get to learn even more from him and just adapt to his new philosophies,” said Swanson “We have great staff and we’ve had a very difficult schedule,” said Jamnick “So we’re trying to play 200-foot hockey and it’s been some ups and downs but it’s been a great experience so far.” the Bluejackets have been rolling along under Jamnick’s guidance including a five and three game win streak throughout the season not many teams have been able to get by the Jackets this year Adding to the excitement around the program is the fact that the Bluejackets have been chosen for Minnesota Hockey Day for the first time since they suited up in Grand Rapids in 2013 “We’re excited,” said Cole Swanson a freshman forward and Tate’s brother “When’s the next time you’re going to play in Hockey Day Minnesota It’s an honor to play in it and just excited “It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Jamnick “The boys are pumped playing outside They’ve all watched it all the way up we’re just going to work hard and have fun.” Hibbing/Chisholm is set to take on Eden Prairie on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., and then the push to the playoffs begins. East Grand Forks Friday at Xcel Energy Center it also seemed to take a painfully long time 45 seconds of game time between the second and third periods the Green Wave scored four goals to erase the Bluejackets' 5-2 lead going on to take a 7-5 win and advance to the state championship game Saturday against St After Isaiah Hildenbrand scored nearly 10 minutes into the second period to put the Bluejackets up three goals it seemed like it would be Hibbing/Chisholm playing for a state championship “That was huge to get the two-goal lead back,” Hildenbrand said Hunter Johnson and Judd Pesch each scored in the final 2 minutes of the second period and Cole Bies scored just his fourth goal of the season 11 seconds into the third to tie the game it steals any momentum that you have,” Tate Swanson said “We should have come out harder and in the third Bluejackets senior Jace Kampsula took a tripping penalty giving East Grand Forks a five-on-three power play Bies scored again 50 seconds into the period and put East Grand Forks in front for the first time the Bluejackets were “down” heading into the locker room and that feeling seemed to carry over “We still had the lead going into the third we should have been more up and ready to go than we were I think that was a big reason we came out flat in the third and they got those two quick goals.” Jace Panzer tossed a puck nearly 200 feet down the ice for an empty-net goal in the closing minute to seal the win The season has been a roller-coaster ride for East Grand Forks (15-13-2) with a 1-5-1 start and a record that didn’t climb above .500 until their win over Northern Lakes but the Green Wave have played an extremely difficult schedule He estimated that East Grand Forks entered the third period within a goal of their opponent in 15 games this season “Our schedule prepared us for a moment like today,” Palmiscno said We just kept finding a way to make the next play and credit to our guys that first shift to start the third period was pretty impressive.” “I’m really proud of these guys for the season we had,” first-year coach Aaron Jamnick said “When we get on the puck and we get going and playing the right way good things happen and we’ve been scoring in waves who led the Bluejackets in goals and assists this season and scored the first goal of the game but it was a great experience and he hopes it's not their last trip to the state tournament “This weekend has been absolutely everything I’ve ever dreamed of,” he said This is just more fuel to the fire to get back here next year.” Hibbing/Chisholm will play Orono in the third-place game at 9:30 a.m Cloud Cathedral in the Class A championship game at noon Saturday at Xcel DULUTH — The Duluth Denfeld boys basketball team made program history on Thursday with a 75-52 victory over Hibbing in the Section 7AAA championship game—snapping a two-decade-long state tournament drought in the process A raucous standing-room-only crowd at East High School witnessed the top-seeded Hunters use an explosive second-half start to turn the tightly contested matchup into a 75-52 blowout by game’s end — sending Denfeld to its first state tournament since 2004 and its fourth appearance overall After coming up short in the section final two years ago against Hermantown head coach Phil Homere and the Hunters were determined to make it over the hump this time around “We told ourselves next time we get in this situation we will not take second,” said head coach Phil Homere “It was great to see the guys execute the game plan the championship win was a fitting reward for the team’s nine seniors and their dedication shown throughout his tenure “Especially knowing when I first took over they were freshmen… and to be able to see them stick with me and be able to get to this point has been great.” Thursday’s loss for the Bluejackets ends a dramatic program turnaround led by first-year head coach Kyle Giorgi Hibbing finished with a 19-10 record after combining for seven wins the past two seasons “To go from a four-win year to a 19-win year and to make it to the section finals at the end but it was an extremely successful year and we’re looking to build off this heading into next year,” said Giorgi A key factor in Hibbing’s resurgence is the emergence of 6-foot-7 center Ray Brau who was the focal point of the Bluejackets’ offensive attack early in the game after scoring eight of the team’s 10 points in a 10-6 score six and a half minutes in Hibbing’s offense continued to funnel the ball inside with little resistance from the Hunters en route to building a 17-10 lead and forcing a Denfeld timeout Denfeld began utilizing an extra defender to slow down the high-scoring sophomore “He’s a very big guy and he’s very skilled,” said Homere “He’s not a kid where one-on-one we have the guy to be able to defend him so I think we constantly sent that second guy and that got the ball out of his hands…” The Hunters came roaring back to knot the score at 22 following a 12-5 scoring run fueled by leading scorer Marnaries Ferguson who finished with a team-high 13 points in the first half and a game-high 31 points overall Denfeld went to the break with a 34-30 lead after a 3-pointer by Carter Brown — the lone 3-pointer of the half between the two teams — as time expired “When he made that shot it turned us up,” said Ferguson “And after we got turned up we couldn’t get stopped from there and I’m just happy that he made that shot With the momentum gained from Brown’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer Denfeld found another gear on both ends of the floor in the second half after converting multiple steals by Ferguson and Lee Brooks into fastbreak baskets and jumping out to a 13-point lead The court remained tilted heavily in the Hunters’ favor in the minutes that followed as Ferguson led the Hunters to a commanding 55-35 lead with multiple 3-point plays “The fact that he’s not getting a bunch of offers because he’s undersized it makes no sense to me… It was great for him to deliver in a big way for us tonight.” Despite the Bluejackets’ best effort to whittle away at the deficit the Hunters continued to dictate the pace and remained in control until the final buzzer as fans poured in to celebrate the newly crowned section champions The moment was one that Antonio Brown will never forget “I’m not really processing the whole thing….When I’m older I feel like it’s really gonna set in that we did something special for this team and this school
