Emory Hillandale Hospital has earned certification as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission
STONECREST, GA - Emory Hillandale Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Primary Stroke Center Certification
The hospital earned the designation for its excellence and high-quality care in diagnosing and treating stroke patients and following the best practices for stroke care
“Emory Hillandale Hospital’s certification as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center acknowledges the tremendous dedication and quality that our staff provides to our stroke patients
as well as the commitment our whole team delivers to these patients and their families,” says Jen Schuck
Emory Decatur and Emory Long-Term Acute Care hospitals
“Virtually every department at Emory Hillandale played a role in this certification process and we are honored to receive this designation.”
According to the American Stroke Association
stroke is the number five cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts or ruptures
causing brain damage that can lead to significant disability
Immediate treatment is needed if someone is having a stroke to reduce the effects and permanent disability
time is not on their side,” says Carol Campbell
stroke program manager at Emory Hillandale and Emory Decatur Hospitals
“Our multi-disciplinary approach to care for stroke patients begins as soon as the patient arrives at the hospital and a similar protocol is followed for inpatients thought to be having a stroke while hospitalized.”
“A stroke alert page goes out to our team for proper assessment and rapid treatment of the patient
The gold standard is to administer clot-busting drugs within 30 minutes of arriving at the hospital
Providing this high-level of care is a huge benefit to our patients and their families.” In 2009
the Georgia Legislature passed the Coverdell–Murphy Act Senate Bill 549 into law
which states that all Georgia hospitals will be assessed for their stroke preparedness
When transporting a patient experiencing possible stroke symptoms to hospital emergency rooms
Emergency Medical Service (EMS)/ambulance providers are advised to bypass hospitals that do not meet status as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center or remote treatment center
Emory Hillandale Hospital saw approximately 370 stroke patients in 2024 and only 16% of them came by ambulance
“Having this certification means our hospital can no longer be bypassed by EMS providers
which leads to better outcomes in stroke patients who are brought to us for rapid treatment,” says Campbell
Understanding the health of the local population is a key component of Emory Hillandale Hospital's health and engagement efforts
In Emory Healthcare’s 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment
medical conditions that can lead to stroke such as hypertension
obesity and diabetes were revealed to be of significant concern to the Stonecrest community primarily served by Emory Hillandale Hospital
Emory Hillandale Hospital launched its stroke support group
which is led by the outpatient rehabilitation team
as a safe space for stroke survivors and their families to share experiences and learn about recovery
“Recognition received for stroke care is a testament to the world-class program that has been established by our quality and clinical teams,” says Edna Brisco
chief nursing officer and vice president of patient care services at Emory Hillandale Hospital
we take strokes very seriously and are invested in evidence-based therapies
efficient processes and ensuring our staff is highly trained
Our stroke support group along with certification as an advanced primary stroke center demonstrate our commitment to improving health care and better outcomes for stroke patients and their families.”
The certification lasts for two years at each site.

a major egg producer for the United States based in the Gettysburg area
recently sold to Luxembourg-based Global Eggs
Reports from the Financial Times and Reuters shared that the sale took place in late March for a reported $1.1 billion. A binding agreement has been signed on the deal, which is awaiting final approvals, the Financial Times reported.
Global Eggs, the reports said, is run by Brazilian entrepreneur Ricardo Faria, with the sale marking Faria's first purchase of an egg producer in the United States.
According to Reuters, Faria, who also owns Granja Faria in Brazil, recently purchased an egg producer in Spain, Grupo Hevo, in November.
The Financial Times report indicated that Faria shared that the purchase of Hillandale will double the global output for Global Eggs.
The deal, according to that report, had been agreed to by Hillandale Farms because Faria “wants to sustain the business" of Hillandale.
Hillandale Farms, which refers to itself as among the top-five egg producers in the United States, has multiple significant production facilities located around Adams County, as well as a location outside of Spring Grove in York County.
The company is currently based in Gettysburg, but operates facilities around the country.
Hillandale Farms currently raises over 20 million chickens for eggs, according to the business. The company began in 1958 by founder Orland Bethel, who purchased an egg company he worked for in Flushing, Ohio.
who is often referred to as the “Egg King.”
egg producer Hillandale Farms for US$1.1 billion
As part of the acquisition, Brazilian investment bank BTG Pactual will invest US$300 million in Global Eggs in exchange for an 11% stake in the group
According to news outlet Reuters
the deal is unrelated to the constrained U.S
egg supply caused by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreaks
which have driven up egg prices and temporarily increased imports from multiple countries
Faria said he purchased the egg producer due to the consistent increase in egg consumption patterns across all social and economic classes over the last decade
Faria is looking for more opportunities in the Western world to grow Global Eggs
“Americans love eggs. It’s a market with high consumption,” Faria told news outlet the Financial Times
“Eggs are the fastest-growing consumer good on the shelf or in supermarket trolleys.”
According to Hillandale Farms chairman Gregory Cessna
Hillandale agreed to the deal with Global because Faria “wants to sustain the business.”
Global Eggs was established last year, is based in Luxembourg and operates Brazilian egg producer Granja Faria. The businesses that make up the company, which include Hillandale, Spanish egg producer Hevo and Granja Faria
had a combined revenue of over US$2 billion in 2024

2024 — The Orland Bethel Family Foundation
already a major supporter of the health sciences at the University of Pittsburgh
has committed $18.5 million to create a biological specimen repository within the Orland Bethel Family Musculoskeletal Research Center (BMRC)
a project that ultimately will help develop treatments for arthritis and other painful conditions affecting millions of people around the world
the foundation has committed more than $45 million to Pitt
including $25 million last year to create the BMRC and a previous $2 million gift to create the Orland Bethel Professorship in Spine Surgery
“The biobank will give researchers in the BMRC—and across the globe—access to important materials to accelerate discovery of biomarkers and therapeutic targets
enhancing our understanding of musculoskeletal disease and improving patient outcomes through personalized medicine,” said Dr
senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean
“The material collected for the repository will place the center on the forefront of global discovery.”
The Orland Bethel Musculoskeletal Research Center Biobank will collect
house and properly distribute specimens that will shed light on disorders such as arthritis
osteoporosis and a range of spinal conditions
The symptoms associated with these disorders diminish quality of life for millions of individuals and lead to billions of dollars of health care costs
such comprehensive musculoskeletal biobanks are rare outside a few select institutions in Europe
“We hope to establish a first-in-kind encyclopedic and accurate data repository that will foster cross-institutional collaboration,” Dr

Ohio — Orland Bethel knows the meaning of a hard day’s work
The founder of Hillandale Farms grew up on a dairy farm in Belmont County
He borrowed $4,000 from his parents and in-laws to get his egg company off the ground and frequently put in 18-hour days to keep it going
he collected eggs from local farmers’ basements throughout southeast Ohio and hand-graded them at his plant before reselling them
Now the company is one of the largest egg producers in the country
employing nearly 2,000 people across several states and raising nearly 20 million chickens
he quickly deflects any credit back onto his employees
a professor at the University of Pittsburgh in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Lee and his team at Pitt and UPMC helped relieve Bethel of incapacitating back and hip pain caused by spinal stenosis
Bethel had consulted with six other orthopedic surgeons before ending up with Lee
The surgery and treatment restored Bethel’s function and movement
Bethel was so impressed with Lee that he has now given more than $45 million through the Orland Bethel Family Foundation to support musculoskeletal care and research at the University of Pittsburgh
“I think he’s on the way to make a tremendous difference,” Bethel said of Lee
The latest donation is $18.5 million to create a biological specimen repository that will be housed within the Orland Bethel Musculoskeletal Research Center
The center was created last year with a $25 million gift from the Bethel family and matching funds from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
Bethel also donated $2 million in 2018 to create the Orland Bethel Professorship in Spine Surgery
this is one of the largest cash gifts given to the university

The only other such biobanks are in the UK and Europe

Bethel asked me for a vision of what I’d like to do and what I’d like to see happen,” Lee said
There’s a huge obligation for me and my team to use that generosity for good
I take that obligation really really seriously.”
The gift builds on last year’s gift that created the Orland Bethel Family Musculoskeletal Research Center

Emory Hillandale Hospital’s Violence Prevention Program (VPP) is the first program of its kind at a community hospital in the state of Georgia
STONECREST, GA - Emory Hillandale Hospital’s Violence Prevention Program (VPP)
the first program of its kind at a community hospital in the state of Georgia
is marking an impactful first year in operation
The VPP at Emory Hillandale Hospital is made possible by the generosity of the DeKalb County government
which in 2023 awarded $11 million for improvements at Emory Hillandale Hospital
plus an additional $2 million allocated to support the VPP for two years
Emory Hillandale Hospital’s Violence Prevention Program has been intentional about listening to the concerns of our community and establishing vital connections and critical services to interrupt the cycle of violence,” says Jen Schuck
Emory Decatur Hospital and Emory Long-Term Acute Care
“I am excited about what’s happening inside our hospital’s walls and beyond to remove stigma and end the surge of violence in our local community.”
Emory Hillandale Hospital serves the Lithonia/Stonecrest community and surrounding areas
The VPP was created in response to Emory Healthcare’s 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment that revealed gun violence was a significant concern to community residents
the Emory Hillandale emergency department saw 80 patients injured due to gun violence in 2024
The majority of those patients were transferred to Grady Memorial Hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center
Emory School of Medicine and Morehouse School of Medicine faculty care for trauma patients
along with Grady’s care team members
Staff from the Interrupting Violence with Youth and Young Adults (IVVY) project
a Grady-based program designed to reduce re-injury

OSHA is investigating a workplace accident that resulted in a Hanover man's death after he was pinned inside of an automatic chicken feeder at a Codorus Township farm on Thursday, according to an OSHA spokesperson and the York County Coroner's Office.
Firefighters and EMS crews had been called for a report of a person trapped in a machine at the Bailey Farms operation of Hillandale Farms, on the 2800 block of Daron Road in Codorus Township around 2:02 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, according to York County 911 records.
According to a release by the coroner's office, a 61-year-old Hanover man, Fernando Estrada-Moreno, was a mechanic who was working on machinery at the farm. While he was working, he was reportedly "impacted and entrapped" by an automatic chicken feed trough, the coroner's office release stated.
Estrada-Moreno was found unresponsive by his coworkers, and life-saving measures were begun on the scene, the release said.
Estrada-Moreno was transported from the facility by ambulance to WellSpan York Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 3:26 p.m., according to the coroner's office.
The coroner's office responded to the hospital, where deputy coroner Scott Pennewill certified the death.
In a statement on Friday, Occupational Safety and Health Administration Spokesperson Leni Fortson confirmed that the agency was investigating the Codorus Township incident.
"The agency has a total of six months to conduct its investigation and release its findings," said Fortson.
A request for comment from Hillandale Farms on Friday morning was not immediately returned.
An autopsy of Estrada-Moreno was scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at the Lehigh Valley Hospital according to the coroner's office.
The incident is being investigated by Pennsylvania State Police, along with OSHA, the coroner's office said.

Global Eggs acquires Hillandale Farms for $1.1bn – Reuters
a Luxembourg-based company led by Brazilian entrepreneur Ricardo Faria
has agreed to acquire US egg producer Hillandale Farms for $1.1 billion
confirmed by Faria to Reuters on Thursday (27 March)
follows the company's strategy to expand its operations
already operates Granja Faria in Brazil and acquired Spain’s Grupo Hevo last November
Brazilian investment bank BTG Pactual's private equity arm will invest $300 million in exchange for an 11% stake in Global Eggs
Faria noted that this acquisition is not linked to the recent surge in US egg prices caused by bird flu outbreaks and rising imports from Brazil
the entrepreneur expressed his confidence in continued global growth in egg consumption
and mainly at the Western world,” he told Reuters
While eggs were once mainly consumed by lower-income households
they have now become a staple across all social and economic groups
reported a total revenue of over $2 billion in 2024
Although Global Eggs had previously planned an initial public offering in New York
Faria stated that the company will now focus on integrating Hillandale and consolidating its brand presence

We’re told the $300-million Hillandale Gateway project is the largest development in the eastern part of Montgomery County in more than 50 years
Planners broke ground in October on the all-electric
We asked the president and executive director of the HOC to explain the income requirements
“About 53% of this development will be affordable
that income range could be between $32,000 and approximately $86,000
that might be $46,000 to approximately $124,000,” Chelsea Andrews said
Construction on Hillandale Gateway should be complete by 2027 and nearly 40,000 people are already on a waiting list
a large dirt and gravel lot dotted with construction equipment was the site of a recent celebration
Local housing officials lined up in hardhats
each holding a shovel decorated with a brightly colored bow
"Beautiful, beautiful," a photographer said as he clicked away. It marked the kickoff for construction of Hillandale Gateway: 463 new mixed-income apartments that will be majority owned by Maryland's Montgomery County
hoping to create more places where people can afford to live
Montgomery County is a wealthy community, and it's long focused on housing for lower-earning families. Still, it hasn't built nearly enough to keep up with demand, and the gap is growing
it took an unusual step: It created a $100 million revolving fund to dramatically ramp up construction
That means it can develop and finance its own projects "instead of waiting for Congress to give us a whole bunch more money," says Zachary Marks
the senior vice president for real estate with the county's Housing Opportunities Commission
The public agency owns the controlling stake in these apartments
Congress has moved away from funding public housing for decades
And while there are federal incentives to help the private market build lower-cost apartments
"we're using them all up every year and it's not enough," Marks says
Now, by financing its own construction, the county doesn't have to rely on private investors, either. Marks and others say that's a major advantage in a boom-and-bust industry where volatility can stall financing for new projects
the amount of local money needed for a project is pretty small
And the county offers cheaper financing with a lower rate of return than private investors would demand
But the mixed-income model is what makes this all work in the long run
The market rate rents "come to us instead of flowing out to the private sector," says Marks
This project is also the largest investment in this eastern part of the county in decades
"The people who will be living here are my seniors
"This is a community that will be inclusive on all economic levels but also in terms of our diverse communities
So this is going to be a wonderful place to call home."
Hillandale is the second project financed by the county's fund
opened last year about a half hour's drive away
Christina Cooley played ping pong in the Laureate courtyard
The building looks nothing like the image of U.S
most of which is generations old and severely underfunded
Cooley says she immediately noticed the pool has a lift at one corner
to lower people with a disability safely into the water
She says she has a traumatic brain injury and one side of her body is partially paralyzed
"Living here has changed my life," she says
Cooley is 43 and works part time as a teacher's aide
Her one-bedroom apartment has a gleaming white kitchen and small sitting area
and she says she'd like to stay here "forever."
"It's definitely a better quality of people
Rents at The Laureate range from about $1,335 for a smaller one-bedroom — far below the county median — to $3,885 for a larger two-bedroom
A quarter of the units are for people making up to 50% of the area median income. In Montgomery County, that's $77,350 for a family of four
An additional 5% of the units are called "workforce" housing
for those who make up to 120% of area median income
these apartments will be affordable permanently
federal tax credits expire and lower-rent housing built with them can revert to market rate after 15 or 30 years
"There's been a lot of uptake and interest for this model from jurisdictions of all shapes and sizes around the country," says Paul Williams, who heads the Center for Public Enterprise. He founded the group to push for more public development generally
including mixed-income housing financed at the local level
affordable housing project without a dollar of any of those conventional sources," he says
Atlanta just closed the first deal with its new housing production fund; it's actually a private project
though a local official says they hope to eventually finance publicly owned housing
a housing policy analyst at The Brookings Institution
says not every place can take on this kind of financing
They have phenomenally competent and experienced staff," she says
"These are all really unusual characteristics for most local governments across the U.S."
Public development advocate Williams sees an answer for that. Maryland just created a state housing fund to help other places that couldn't do this on their own. A new bill in Congress would do the same
offering federal money to help communities create more publicly owned affordable housing

Duke University Golf Club and Hillandale Golf Course offer discounts to Duke staff and faculty
When Jennifer Ingram joined the Duke University School of Medicine faculty in 2006
she was thrilled to learn about a bonus to her employment: the staff and faculty discount at the Duke University Golf Club
Ingram has been golfing at the course associated with the Washington Duke Inn since 2002
and already was in love with not only the course layout
but how she could walk the accessible fairways rather than rely on a golf cart
an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary
began coordinating a ladies’ “9 after 5” league at the course in 2011 and said the staff and faculty discount “has facilitated its continuation” ever since
and it’s great to feel that Duke’s golf course is my ‘home’ course,” Ingram said
Duke employees receive discounts on greens fees, with 2024 rates between $55-85 depending on the day (regularly $90-$115)
Along with the Duke University Golf Club employee discount, Hillandale Golf Course offers a 10% discount to Duke employees who show their valid ID
“Staff and faculty are certainly one of the groups of people that we want to try and look after as best we can,” said Ed Ibarguen
longtime General Manager and PGA director of Golf at the Duke University Golf Club
“It's been a very nice relationship to have them feel like we're part of the university.”
The award-winning 67-year-old Duke University Golf Club was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr
the course has received top rankings from Golf Digest and Golf Magazine and has been voted best public course in the Triangle by the Triangle Business Journal
called the course “a fantastic challenge.”
“We have tees that you can play from regardless of your handicap or your playing skill that you can enjoy,” he said
you can like that we’re the kind of course that hosts a U.S
Open Finals Qualifier” as the course did in June 2024
“it’s like going to a private country club and a public fee.”
“We’re accomplishing that goal pretty well,” he said

egg producer’s founder contributed the $18.5 million donation to help researchers better understand the musculoskeletal disease
Orland BethelAimee Obidzinski | University of PittsburghHillandale Farms founder Orland Bethel’s foundation has committed US$18.5 million to enhance and further a University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) research project that will help develop treatments for arthritis and other painful conditions
The money will help researchers create a biological specimen repository within the Orland Bethel Family Musculoskeletal Research Center (BMRC) that will shed light on disorders such as arthritis
osteoporosis and other spinal conditions and orthopedic joint issues
the Orland Bethel Family Foundation has committed over US$45 million in total to the university
which includes US$25 million gifted in 2023 to create the BMRC and US$2 million to create the Orland Bethel Professorship in Spine Surgery
which supports the chosen faculty member’s spine research and other academic initiatives
Pitt John and Gertrude Petersen Dean of the School of Medicine and Senior Vice Chancellor Anantha Shekhar stated
“The biobank will give researchers in the BMRC—and across the globe—access to important materials to accelerate discovery of biomarkers and therapeutic targets
enhancing our understanding of musculoskeletal disease and improving patient outcomes through personalized medicine.”
“Once the Biobank database is established
we can explore the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning data analysis for more accurate treatment of musculoskeletal diseases.”
After suffering from spinal pain for several years
Bethel received relief and restored function following a surgery performed by Dr
Pitt Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
and researchers took over my care nearly a decade ago
it transformed my life and gave me new hope
I see they are doing the same thing for others with support from my family’s foundation,” Bethel stated
“I know this newest gift will enhance the work of the Orland Bethel Family Musculoskeletal Research Center and will have an impact on the entire field of orthopedics.”

Hillandale is one of the only gated communities in Washington DC and has been hailed in Forbes.com as one of the 9 best gated communities in America
It sits on the former estate of Ann Archbold
who was one of the two daughters of John Dustin Archbold
one of the earliest independent oil refiners in the country and became an original director and executive at Standard Oil
Hillandale has a rich and interesting history
It was a working 70 acre sheep farm until Ms
Archbold bought the entire property in 1922
Archbold with the help of Josephine Wright Chapman
one of the first female architects in the country
Both structures are now designated Historic Properties
Hillandale retains the spirit of gracious living envisioned by Ann Archbold when she built her original villa in 1922
Surrounded by the 250+ acre Glover-Archbold Park
Hillandale is a naturally wooded area with ponds
wildlife and a serenity not found in any other location so close to the heart of the city
interspersed with a bright palette of seasonal flowers and vegetation
a gatehouse and several other small outbuildings
Ann Archbold donated 23.12 acres of this land to the DC Park Service to become part of Glover-Archbold Park
He sold 8 acres in 1973 to the Republic of France to build a Chancery and residence
The Hillandale Development Company was formed and Murchison’s company
Tecon Realty/Development was the contractor
Yet after only 54 of the planned 268 townhouses (what is now Georgetown Court) and one detached house were built
the parcel was taken over in a foreclosure action in 1985 and sold to another developer
Wymark wanted to convert the mansion into condominiums
This was opposed by the community and area homeowners
Wymark subsequently sold the Mansion and the remaining 1.5 acres to Sur Development in 1988
Kettler Brothers and Eakin Youngentob (now EYA) finished the remaining townhomes and the 20 new detached homes were mainly built by Kettler Brothers with two other builders finishing the remaining lots

The Orland Bethel Family Foundation has pledged a $25 million gift — for which the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine will make an equivalent co-investment — that will enable Pitt to elevate its study of musculoskeletal disorders including osteoporosis
The $50 million total will create the Orland Bethel Family Musculoskeletal Research Center (BMRC) to attract and retain top scientists as well as to advance leading-edge research
making musculoskeletal medicine a major focus alongside cancer and neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the other five schools of the health sciences
“We are poised to develop potential breakthroughs in therapeutics through clinical and basic science research in musculoskeletal diseases and orthopaedic surgery,” said Anantha Shekhar
the John and Gertrude Petersen Dean of the School of Medicine and senior vice chancellor for the health sciences at Pitt
trainees and students in areas that will bring hope to the hundreds of thousands who face these problems every day.”
“My family and I are pleased to offer our support to the spectacular work of Dr
physicians and researchers within the department led by Dr
Hogan through the creation of the Orland Bethel Family Musculoskeletal Research Center,” Bethel said
“I know how the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC changed my life and can only imagine how the lives of others — worse off than I was — will be improved thanks to the ongoing research at this new center.”
[Read more about Bethel’s story in Pitt Med magazine.]
The BMRC will elevate current orthopaedic work, translate it into applicable treatments and further enhance both Pitt’s and UPMC’s leadership in the discipline locally, nationally and internationally. Half of the gift will be put to use immediately, with the remainder scheduled to launch an endowment that will support the initiative in perpetuity.
The new center — expected to open in 2024 — will provide multiyear commitments to support such areas as:
“With this exceptional gift, Orland Bethel and his family are supporting and advancing our continuum of work, from basic science to patient care,” University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Joan Gabel said. “I am grateful for the confidence they have placed in Pitt and for how this gift will help to elevate musculoskeletal research through the development of world-class talent and transformational discovery."
In a prior gift, Bethel and his foundation created the Orland Bethel Chair in Spine Surgery, which is held by Lee. As part of the new award, the University will place the center’s name on the entrance to the Biomedical Science Tower Complex, where it will be housed.
The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has achieved national and international prominence, earning a stellar reputation for leading many key scientific and clinical innovations, with one of the top and most diverse orthopaedic training programs in the country. Similarly, the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a leader in National Institutes of Health rehabilitation research.
Hogan, chair of orthopaedic surgery, noted both the vitality and the novelty of the gift: “Orland Bethel is helping to speed up that imperative cycle. He benefited from scientific advancements and innovation from the bench to his bedside and, thanks to the Bethel family’s generosity, now we can continue elevating and translating the efforts of our research programs into the clinical reality for our patients.”
egg producer hopes to sell approximately 700 acres of the farm and have it rezoned for alternate use by the buyer
Nicolae Malancea I iStock.comU.S. egg producer Hillandale Farms has listed 600-700 acres of its Turner

the producer only utilizes 300-400 acres of the property
If the rezoning is approved at the town’s April 6th meeting
it would eliminate the current agricultural zoning and allow the land to be used for other activities
it has scaled down production by approximately two thirds to align with its customer’s needs
according to President of the farm location Steve Vendemia
The facility currently houses 480,000 birds and employees 45 workers
Hillandale is evaluating the facility’s profitability quarterly and currently has no plans to close the farm
despite the shipping costs needed to transport poultry feed there from the Midwest
The stores the farm currently serves are in Maine and New Hampshire
According to WATT Global Media’s 2024 Top U.S. Egg Producer Rankings
Hillandale Farms is the fourth largest egg producer in the country with 18.75 million layers and production facilities in the Northeast
In 2023, one of Hillandale Farms’ Connecticut facilities caught fire
The fire killed approximately 100,000 layers; however
no firefighters or employees were injured
The house that caught fire was 300 to 400 feet long and two stories high and was not able to be saved
The remaining 13 layer houses were unaffected and operations continued as normal the following day

Hillandale Farms management has not responded to the Akron Beacon Journal's requests for comment
Land in the Massillon Road Industrial Park sells for $25,000 an acre, according to the city of Akron
The final price of the Hillandale Farms deal will depend on the final lot plan
Röchling Automotive USA owns an electrical substation on a small section of the now-14.01-acre parcel property
which Beckert said will need to be separated
He said the city will likely sell that portion of property to Röchling rather than retain it or sell it to another owner for the automotive company to lease from
Hillandale Farms’ broker in the deal, Colliers Cleveland/Akron Senior Vice President Ed Matzules
said the $25,000-per-acre sale price in the industrial park is “well below market for the cost of industrial land
But the city uses that as an incentive to try to stimulate new companies and create jobs and so forth.”
The new facility is expected to cost $15 million because of the heavy refrigeration that will be required
“That adds a lot of cost to the building,” he said
he said: “I would say probably late spring
