Firefighters rescued several residents of a Hoffman Estates apartment complex after an early Tuesday morning fire left a dozen units uninhabitable
Three people were transported to a nearby hospital and a fourth person drove there
All four were treated and released later in the day
Firefighters were alerted by an automatic fire alarm inside the three-story building on the 1000 block of Atlantic Avenue at about 6:10 a.m
Fire and smoke was visible from the second floor and spreading
Firefighters used multiple ladder trucks to rescue residents from the upper floors of the complex
It took nearly two hours to extinguish the blaze
The cause of the fire remains under investigation

Michael Kaminsky (left) and Max Long speak this month at a news conference announcing a lawsuit against DePaul University alleging the school failed to protect them and other Jewish and Israeli students
Police are investigating an attack on Kaminsky and Long as a hate crime
A Hoffman Estates man was charged in an attack last November against two Jewish students at DePaul University
was charged with two felony counts of a hate crime and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm
The attack happened on Nov. 6 outside the DePaul student center in the 2200 block of North Sheffield Avenue in Lincoln Park
Max Long and Michael Kaminsky were outside the student center when they were approached and attacked by two men wearing black face masks
The incident was being investigated as a hate crime
“Max and Michael are thankful that one of the assailants has finally been apprehended and they look forward to seeing justice be served,” the Lawfare Project
“We expect that the Chicago Police Department will apprehend the second suspect shortly
and that both assailants will be charged — very appropriately — with hate crime offenses by the State’s Attorney
who will prosecute them to the full extent of the law.”
Long and Kaminsky sued DePaul earlier this month
alleging the university was negligent and failed to protect their safety while on campus
and Kaminsky fractured his wrist during the attack
A DePaul Public Safety officer was present but failed to intervene
“Jewish students should feel safe on their own campus,” Kaminsky said at a news conference announcing the suit
“When universities infringe upon these rights
saying “such an act clearly defies DePaul’s values to uphold and care for the dignity of every individual.”
The attack took place several months after pro-Palestinian students erected an encampment on DePaul’s campus, following a national trend that saw students call for an end to the Israeli bombardment of Gaza in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks in Israel
The Trump administration has targeted students who had been involved with pro-Palestinian activism or speech
with a few high-profile detentions of students
a green card holder who was a leader of protests at Columbia University in New York
But schools are also seeing visas stripped from students with no known connection to protests
past infractions such as traffic violations have been cited
Some colleges say the reasons remain unclear to them — and they are seeking answers
Erkan is scheduled to appear in court later Thursday

Officials recently broke ground on a project involving 164 townhouse units on the northeast side of Bell Works in Hoffman Estates
which will be known as The Towns at Bell Works Chicagoland
The partnership among New Jersey-based Inspired by Somerset Development, home builder PulteGroup and the village of Hoffman Estates expects to see completion of the project during the third quarter of 2026
The townhouses add the long-awaited residential component that fulfills the vision of the redeveloped former AT&T headquarters as a “metroburb” where people work
“Our vision for the metroburb model has always been to create more than just a vibrant hub for work
all-encompassing community,” Inspired by Somerset founder and CEO Ralph Zucker said in a statement
“Implementing a townhome component was a natural next step in evolving that vision
providing a unique residential offering that perfectly complements our growing ecosystem at Bell Works Chicagoland.”
The townhouses have been designed with three-bedroom layouts with an option for a fourth
three floors of living space and two-car garages
They are expected to be priced in the mid-$400,000s
representatives told village officials last year
Inspired by Somerset Development and PulteGroup previously worked together on several residential projects in New Jersey
but this will be the firms’ first partnership in Illinois
“Our successful partnership with Inspired in New Jersey has laid the foundation for what we’re bringing to Chicagoland,” PulteGroup Vice President of Land Acquisition Rob Getz said in a statement
we’re creating thoughtfully designed communities that seamlessly integrate with the Bell Works ecosystem.”
Inspired by Somerset’s ability to replicate the approach it took with the original Bell Works in Holmdel
solved the vexing question of the property’s fate after AT&T moved out
“The village is excited to see the continued growth of Bell Works with the groundbreaking of the 164 high-end townhomes,” Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod said in a statement
along with the future luxury apartments in the works
will truly transform this property into the ‘metroburb’ we’ve all come to envision.”
About 300 rental apartments ultimately are planned to join the owner-occupied townhouses on the same nearly 20-acre site at the east end of the 152-acre property
But the apartments so far have received only conceptual approval
Last month, Bell Works Chicagoland announced several new leases including medical device provider Arjo at 35,600 square feet, and indoor golf facility Swing Loose at 5,150 square feet
The east side of the redeveloping AT&T building is at nearly 90% capacity
with plans progressing to start construction on the west side

an attorney for two DePaul students who were attacked while supporting Israel
speaks at press conference announcing a lawsuit against DePaul University alleging the school failed to protect them and other Jewish and Israeli students
Police are investigating an attack on Michael Kaminsky and Max Long as a hate crime
A Hoffman Estates man accused of attacking DePaul University students who were showing support for Israel on campus was ordered held awaiting trial Thursday
Adam Erkan, 20, was charged with two felony counts of a hate crime and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, Chicago police said. The alleged attack happened on Nov. 6 outside the DePaul student center in the 2200 block of North Sheffield Avenue in Lincoln Park
a Triton College student with no previous criminal history
was captured on surveillance video arriving near the campus about an hour before the attack without the ski mask he was later accused of wearing during the attack
who was wearing a sign that said “Come talk about Israel with an IDF soldier” and a sweater that said “Curb your anti-semitism.” Prosecutors said Long had been standing outside the student center and engaging passersby every Wednesday for two months
After talking with Long and the other victim
prosecutors said Erkan told the two that Palestine had been “wrongly occupied” before another suspect
who was wearing a necklace that said “Bring them home,” tried to intervene when Erkan allegedly pulled him off the other two and pushed him to the ground
Erkan and the other suspect then fled in different directions while a campus safety officer called emergency services
The other suspect’s clothes were later found in a nearby dumpster
Police contacted Erkan’s father in February after they identified him as the owner of the car Erkan arrived in
Erkan’s father identified his son in surveillance video captured prior to the attack
Erkan’s lawyer and father both declined to speak with reporters
During a pretrial hearing Thursday afternoon
Judge James Costello said he was factoring in recent changes to the pretrial monitoring system
but that Erkan and his uncharged co-defendant’s use of ski masks were a “universal sign of aggression,” and that he presented a clear and present threat to the victims and community at large
“What I have before me is a concentrated plan to commit a violent crime against people who said who they are,” Costello said
“This could happen again with the legally required unrestricted movement.”
Erkan will remain in custody for the time being
and that the streets of Chicago are safer today because of it,” the Lawfare Project
“We also expect that law enforcement will continue to thoroughly investigate and apprehend and charge Erkan’s co-conspirator
The felony charges and pretrial confinement speak to the seriousness of this attack
and we look forward to obtaining justice for Max and Michael.”
saying the university was negligent and failed to protect their safety while on campus
A DePaul Public Safety officer was also present but failed to intervene
These aren’t the first hate crime charges related to Israel and Palestinian protests near the city
Skokie resident Zevulen Ebert, 33, originally faced hate crime charges after he pepper-sprayed several protesters
a Chicago police officer providing backup and a Chicago Sun-Times reporter at the scene of a counterprotest outside an Israel solidarity event in October 2023
Ebert originally faced two charges of aggravated battery with hate crime enhancements
though he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor aggravated battery charge without a hate crime enhancement in January
He was ordered to pay $1,124 in fines and put under two years of court supervision
Prosecutors declined to charge another man after he fired a shot in the air near the counterprotest that night
A rebranding and renovation of the dining venue formerly known as World’s Fair at Bell Works Chicagoland in Hoffman Estates will be completed with its reopening as Bell Market this summer
the new vendor will be operating as a pop-up next to the space it will ultimately occupy
“Building on the recent leasing momentum at Bell Works Chicagoland
we’re excited to introduce an entirely new culinary destination to our growing metroburb,” Ralph Zucker
founder and CEO of New Jersey-based Inspired by Somerset Development
His firm has been redeveloping the former AT&T headquarters
“Not only will Bell Market add depth to our food and beverage offerings but it will also create another vibrant space for tenants and the community to come together
connect and experience everything our ecosystem has to offer,” Zucker added
Bell Market plans to offer a wide variety of options including ramen
Bell Market is expected to be a hub for weekly entertainment
“The success of Bell Market at Bell Works New Jersey has been overwhelmingly positive
and expanding to Chicagoland was a natural next step for us,” RBC Hospitality partners Richard Corbo and Chad Spencer said in a statement
“Bringing Bell Market to Bell Works Chicagoland allows us to become part of its already thriving ecosystem
and we look forward to welcoming the community very soon.”
the Bell Market pop-up will be open from 7 a.m
Those hours will remain after the permanent space opens

No injuries were reported in a Monday night house fire in Hoffman Estates that caused an estimated $250,000 in damage
single-family house on the 500 block of Glendale Lane just before 8:30 p.m
Smoke was showing from the front of the house and residents confirmed to firefighters that everyone had made it out safely
It took about six minutes to bring the fire under control
Fire officials are still trying to determine what caused the blaze
but believe it started in one of the home’s spare bedrooms
which fire officials said had working smoke detectors
The Illinois Appellate Court Thursday upheld an earlier Cook County circuit court ruling dismissing a lawsuit in which the village of Hoffman Estates claimed a right to 20 acres owned by the Northern Illinois University Foundation
That claim stemmed from a 1999 annexation agreement
though it was a 2005 amendment that complicated the matter
The undeveloped land in question is northeast of the intersection of Beacon Pointe and Essex drives
just west of Beverly Road and south of Interstate 90
When the village’s lawsuit was filed in 2021
Hoffman Estates Corporation Counsel Art Janura told the village board that the annexation agreements that created the University Place and Laufenberger subdivisions had originally donated land for the creation of a Northern Illinois University branch campus intended to benefit village residents
The initial understanding was that if the campus was not built within 10 years
Though a 2005 amendment swapped the originally donated land for other property within the annexation
it was the village’s position that a commitment to give it to the village never changed
was whether the 2005 amendment — which doesn’t explicitly make such a promise — was intended to supersede or carry on the commitments of the 1999 agreement
When the circuit court dismissed Hoffman Estates’ lawsuit
the village’s appeal was based on an argument that language in the 2005 amendment had been misinterpreted and that both documents were meant to be read together
But the appellate court ultimately sided with the circuit court’s ruling after a long deliberation
“Obviously I’m disappointed in their decisions
but we have options to consider,” Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod said
“We’ll have to decide what we’re going to do.”
Village staff said a more thorough review of the new ruling was required before they could respond
The village began its legal pursuit of the property prior to any discussion of how it might be used

Hoffman Estates High School’s Orange Krush majorettes team is already celebrated for its uniqueness in the suburbs even as its members and coaches hope to become more influential
Majorettes are a style of dance squad strongly associated with
historically Black colleges and universities
The Orange Krush team combines that tradition with a Western African aesthetic along with jazz and hip-hop influences
majorette teams are rare in Illinois and otherwise nonexistent in the Northwest suburbs
Coach Susan Buck said it’s a goal to create other teams that could compete against each other in the future
she’s finding joy in the way her team’s performances are embraced at school sporting events as well as throughout the wider community
“They all come out to the football and basketball games
we did the Black History Month celebration at the village hall last year
So we’ve widened not only in school but also outside of school.”
affectionately known as “Mama Sue,” also finds satisfaction that the squad has provided an outlet for creativity and expression for many students who hadn’t found another extracurricular niche at the school
“I’m just happy there’s something that students that normally wouldn’t be involved in something now have something to be involved in to show their school spirit
and just show their personality through dance
Senior Kadynn Pommells is one of three members who have been with the team since the start
I felt like I needed something to do at school where I felt like I fit in,” she said
It’s something I love doing and will continue to do after high school.”
the majorette team was an already established program she gravitated toward upon her arrival at the school
“I’ve been dancing since I was as little as 7 years old,” she said
and so I decided to join majorettes because it’s a new opportunity for me
meeting new people and doing stuff that I never did before that I never knew that I could do.”
Both girls described a similar series of emotions that performing produces
“When I’m performing I always get nervous before we start
but once I’m out there I just feel so free,” Kadynn said
“I love making people smile when they see me dance.”
“At first I’m nervous because there’s a lot of people in the crowd
it all goes away and I get to show who I really am,” Yana agreed
The inspiration for the team came in 2022 when a senior at the time reached out to administrators about starting the squad
said she’d organize it and recruited Eboni Jackson as chief choreographer
Twenty-four girls immediately joined for the inaugural season
Participation has largely stayed around the same level
the boys and girls on Orange Krush don’t have different roles
But the routines can be choreographed in a way all members are equally comfortable with
While she knows what the team is already doing for its participants
Buck remains convinced the ability to enter tournaments is the most significant aspect that can be added to the experience in the future
for other schools in this area to get majorette teams
so that we can move and actually compete,” she said
The Hoffman Estates High School cast and crew have been working very hard to present this year’s musical: “Big Fish.” Dive into the extraordinary world of “Big Fish: The Musical,” a heartwarming tale of adventure

a traveling salesman with a gift for telling fantastical stories
has always been enchanted by his father’s larger-than-life tales — filled with giants
and daring adventures — but as he prepares to become a father himself
he is determined to separate fact from fiction
“Big Fish” is a celebration of imagination
The cast of “Big Fish” has spent the last few months learning the ins and outs of their characters
and they are excited to use their special talents to perform the show this week
“I’ve gotten so many new perspectives that I will continue to use going forward in my acting career,” Mason Wang (Edward Bloom) said
noting that this production has helped him grow as both an actor and a performer
Stage Manager Air SanMiguel is excited to lead the crew in such a beautiful show
“Seeing the effort everyone puts toward this production truly makes all the late nights worth it in the end,” she said

Advocate Health Care on Monday opened a new immediate care and outpatient center
which also will provide an additional location for the company’s South Asian Cardiovascular Center
near the intersection of Route 59 and Interstate 90
will offer such services as primary and immediate care
“Advocate Health Care is excited to expand care to patients in this area,” said Dr
chief medical officer for Advocate Medical Group’s north Illinois area
“This new clinic will allow patients to access high-quality care through a number of services closer to home.”
Advocate’s first South Asian Cardiovascular Center opened in 2012 at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge
before expanding to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital and the Western suburbs
the new Hoffman Estates clinic will begin offering the same services to patients in the Northwest suburbs
These facilities aim to provide compassionate and culturally sensitive care to a population at greater risk for heart disease
While South Asians represent about 25% of the world’s population
they are about 60% of the world’s heart disease patients — including heart attacks and strokes — according to the American College of Cardiology
Including prevention-aimed community education
the new center will offer these patients comprehensive heart care
this is my opportunity to give back to my community,” said Dr
Advocate Medical Group cardiologist at the clinic
culture and the barriers involved when discussing a healthy lifestyle or reducing heart health risk factors
I look forward to connecting with my community to improve their health and well-being.”
Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod said with a growing and aging population in the area
village officials recognized the need for both the general and specific services of the new outpatient center
“There’s a need out there for more medical facilities everywhere,” he added

The recent sale of the 185-acre Plum Farms property at the northwest corner of Route 59 and Higgins Road could lead to a third data center campus in Hoffman Estates
Mayor Bill McLeod announced in his State of the Village address Wednesday
The undeveloped site lies directly west of The Arboretum of South Barrington shopping center
plans centered around residential development
In his annual update before the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce at the Now Arena
McLeod said no formal plans have been submitted
but the village expressed its openness to the possibility of another data center campus
Microsoft is completing and powering up the first of its planned data center buildings at Barrington Road and Lakewood Boulevard while applying for a construction permit for a second
Dallas-based Compass Datacenters is continuing the demolition of the massive former Sears headquarters at the west end of the village to make way for its own campus
But even as McLeod provided an update on the ongoing commercial and residential redevelopment of the former AT&T headquarters at Bell Works Chicagoland — the chamber’s Business of the Year — one audience member asked for a timeline on the repair of the Cook County-owned Central Road that’s critical to its future
“Now that’s an age-old question,” McLeod remarked
noting the two-year project is currently expected to begin next year
Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi of Schaumburg presented Cook County with $500,000 in federal funding he secured for the planned $18.9 million improvement of the 1.3-mile stretch of bumpy
patched road running along the north side of I-90
“It will definitely be worth the wait when it’s finally done,” McLeod said
Now Arena General Manager Ben Gibbs joined the mayor to report on the post-pandemic recovery of the village-owned entertainment venue and the new summertime opportunities presented by the regrading of the previously sloped Village Green next door
The arena’s 2024 numbers were up 70% from pre-pandemic 2019
the facility brought in a total of $13.1 million last year
Gibbs lauded the arena’s staff for the amount of work that goes into each event
“It’s not for the faint of heart,” he said
As the work day concluded Thursday afternoon
hundreds of people lined both sides of Northwest Highway in Palatine to protest President Donald Trump’s policies as part of May Day
With Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime” playing in the background
urged observers to “rise up/fight back,” waved flags and cheered drivers who honked their horns in solidarity
who attended the rally with college friend Sue Carlson of Kildeer
The Barrington woman expressed pride that her generation recognizes the need for unity
“The momentum has to keep going,” she said
The women plan to return June 14 for a Flag Day rally
Murach’s succinct message contrasted with Tim Thomas’ more wordy sign urging hands off Medicare
“Labor and the workforce has been trampled on for too long,” said the Palatine man who led fellow protesters in chanting “workers united will never be defeated.”
“We need to voice our concerns and be heard … We can’t let people push us around,” he added
Intermittent rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the 250 to 300 protesters who gathered at the intersection of Golf and Wolf roads in Des Plaines
stand up for workers’ rights and fight the tyrannical government coup,” said organizer Kate Olsen
Concerns over Social Security drew Park Ridge resident Larry Smith to the Des Plaines rally
“I am worried about my grandchildren’s future and I want to bring democracy back,” he said
He said it’s not enough for people to fight back
“Merely opposing Trump is not enough,” he said
Defending the Constitution inspired the participation of fellow organizer
Marine veteran and former federal worker Dan Tully
the West suburban army reservist referenced Chicago’s deadly 1886 Haymarket riot and urged participants to “resist” in the spirit of International Worker’s Day
Janet and Jerome McDonnell of Arlington Heights and Terri Murphy of Prospect Heights held aloft giant cutouts of clenched fists
“A lot of people feel the same but still stay on the sidelines,” Murphy said
“It’s important to come out at this moment because two months from now
six months from now there may not be the opportunity to make a change.”

Bell Works Chicagoland in Hoffman Estates has announced the signing of another 73,500 square feet of newly leased space by seven additional tenants and the major expansion of an existing one
The news comes fresh off the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s recognition of the self-described “metroburb” as its Business of the Year
As New Jersey-based Inspired by Somerset Development continues to repurpose the sprawling
the new leases bring the initial east wing of the building to nearly 90% occupancy
“This latest group of tenants represents an exciting mix of office
retail and community-focused offerings,” founder and CEO Ralph Zucker said
“From unique tech solutions to culinary offerings
Bell Works Chicagoland continues to thrive as a vibrant metroburb where business
culture and community intersect seamlessly.”
Existing tenant Convergint
which started with about 65,000 square feet at Bell Works has added another 17,400 square feet of office space and 10,000 square feet of warehouse space
installs and maintains electronic security
life safety and building automation systems
“We’ve been fortunate to find both office and warehouse space at Bell Works Chicagoland that suits our range of needs
expanding our space was a natural next step,” Convergint’s Vice President for the North Central Region Alex Wallis said
explained why the venue’s success at the original Bell Works in Holmdel
New Jersey inspired expansion to Hoffman Estates
and the ever-growing tenant mix at Bell Works Chicagoland is something our organization has always admired,” he said
explained the choice of location for the entertainment venue that features private rooms with a living room setup and a kitchen-inspired area for groups to enjoy food and beverages
“Bell Works’ vision aligns perfectly with our mission to offer a place where people can celebrate
and we’re excited to contribute to that experience,” he said
Northwest suburban resident and host of the Love Local podcast Jason Stallard moved his media agency to Bell Works to help amplify the stories of people
businesses and nonprofits through video production and podcasting
“Bell Works Chicagoland’s space brings different businesses and nonprofits together to connect and collaborate
creating an environment that aligns perfectly with my mission,” he said
“Our goal is to inspire people and local organizations to create social media content that fosters deeper connections within the community.”
Bell Works soon will fulfill its intended metroburb identity when construction begins on 164 townhouses on the east side of the site
Final approval also is being sought for nearly 300 apartments in the same 20-acre residential district of the property

A Hoffman Estates woman died in the hospital a day and a half after a medical emergency caused her to drive her vehicle off the road onto a frozen marsh just north of St
According to the Cook County medical examiner’s office
62-year-year-old Susanna Miller died at 6:10 a.m
The cause and manner of her death is still pending
Miller was driving south on Barrington Road past the intersection of West Higgins Road when she had the medical emergency
Her vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes and off the east side of the road and onto the marsh
according to the preliminary police investigation

Accidental carbon monoxide poisoning caused the deaths of two Conant High School students found early Sunday morning in a locked car in Hoffman Estates
officers and firefighters responded to the 200 block of East Berkley Lane at 12:37 a.m
for a report of two people who appeared unconscious and not breathing in a vehicle parked outdoors
After finding the 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy unresponsive
pulled out the teens and began lifesaving measures
where they were pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the teens as Litzy Flores
Autopsy results released by the medical examiner Sunday afternoon indicate both teens died from carbon monoxide poisoning from inhaling automobile exhaust
The deaths were ruled accidental by the medical examiner’s office
Among the issues they are examining is whether there were issues with an after-market exhaust system installed on the vehicle
Conant High School Principal Julie Nowak confirmed in a statement Sunday that Flores was a sophomore at the high school in Hoffman Estates
“This is a terrible loss for the entire Conant Community,” she wrote
our thoughts are collectively with the families
and friends of Yeferson and Litzy during this extremely difficult time.”
He represented Honduras at the school’s International Fair last week
Flores was actively exploring her path and was making the most of her opportunities at Conant
“Both Yeferson and Litzy were beloved by their teachers and classmates,” Nowak wrote
Therapists will be in the students’ classes Monday
including therapeutic staff and comfort dogs
take time to discuss this loss with their children,” Nowak wrote
“It’s helpful for students to process loss at home with their families
“I am confident our Conant Community will join together to create an environment of caring support for one another and that these families will know the love we had for Yeferson and Litzy,” she continued

The Department of Government Efficiency recently claimed to end an annual $1.48 million lease of a Hoffman Estates building as the temporary archive of the Barack Obama Presidential Library
but a move planned for the materials to a permanent site in Maryland was already announced last August
The 74,200-square-foot former Plunkett Furniture store at 2500 W
Golf Road owned by Hoffman Estates Medical Development LLC was leased by the National Archives and Records Administration since the autumn of 2016
just as Obama was preparing to leave the White House
The lease was renewed in 2022 through what expected to be Dec
vice president of investment sales for Imperial Realty Co.
said the lease was due to end in September 2025 anyway
“I am starting to market the thing right now,” Huber said
As soon as the property showed up on DOGE’s list of terminating federal leases
he said he’s been flooded with inquiries about its availability — including about 200 on Wednesday alone
That number of inquiries usually results in at least three or four serious players who want to discuss a deal
With its unique security and climate-control upgrades
the building could be of use for enterprises that particularly need those or just its sheer size
NARA officials Thursday said a permanent move of the Obama archives and its center of operations to College Park
well before Trump was elected or DOGE was even created
Huber said his understanding of what’s been happening in Hoffman Estates is materials were digitized and copied for display at the future Obama library near the University of Chicago
with no original NARA holdings to be displayed there
Many of those who examined the building in 2016 as potential work site showed an unusual amount of enthusiasm
but that was mainly because they lived nearby
Having gotten to visit the temporary archive himself
Huber said the building is extraordinary not only for its mission-specific upgrades
He joked that he would have no hesitation about finishing a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder accidentally dropped on the floor
The forthcoming Obama library is described by NARA as the first fully digital of the 14 Presidential libraries it administers
An estimated 95% of the Obama administration’s records were originally digital
The agency also received about 30 million pages of unclassified paper records

That’s exactly what Tyler Tulk did for Lincoln-Way Central on Friday night in a 49-28 win over Hoffman Estates in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs
Tulk missed the Knights’ opening-round game against Maine West with an ankle injury
but he showed no lingering effects Friday night
Tulk followed his massive offensive line and burst through holes
making cutbacks for long gains or simply outrunning defenders
He finished with 250 yards and five touchdowns on just 17 carries
“I’ve never scored five touchdowns in a game before,” Tulk said
the defense really doesn’t know what to expect
The Knights (8-3) finished with 441 rushing yards on 48 attempts
They only attempted three passes and completed just one of them
but it went for a 38-yard touchdown from Drew Woodburn to Luke Andresen early in the first quarter that gave Central its first lead at 14-7
Hoffman Estates’ Willie Baldwin returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown for the game’s first score
and Tulk answered with a 13-yard touchdown run later in the quarter two plays after he broke off a 31-yard gain to reach the 22
so we were a little angry after that,” Tulk said about the early deficit
we knew what we had to do and we went out and executed.”
but fellow running back Luke Tingley ran for 126 yards on 17 carries
Tulk added a 22-yard TD run for a 21-7 lead and a four-yard TD run by Tingley put the Knights ahead 28-7 with 2:35 to play until halftime
Hoffman Estates showed signs of life late in the first half when quarterback Nate Cleveland tossed an 18-yard TD to Torey Baskin with 38.8 to play
The Knights’ defense limited Hoffman Estates to 82 total yards in the first half while the Central offense gained 295
“They beat us up front on both sides of the ball,” Hoffman Estates coach Tim Heyse said
“It’s hard to get much done when the other team is beating you up front.”
which visits Bradley-Bourbonnais in the quarterfinals next week
received the second-half kickoff and marched 60 yards on just four plays
Tingley ran for gains of 13 and 18 yards before Tulk ripped off a 28-yard gain and went over from the 1 on the next play
came after Carick Richards intercepted a Cleveland pass and returned it to the 10
Tulk scored from 11 yards out for a 49-14 lead
“It was important for us to come back with a touchdown right away after being down 7-0,” Central coach Dave Woodburn said
and our offensive line was just outstanding
I have to give all the credit to our offensive coaching staff
I don’t even see a lot of our offensive plays because I am talking to the defense on the sideline
We knew we had to know where Cleveland was at all times
got an eight-yard TD run by Cleveland and a 32-yard touchdown run by JMari Jackson in the fourth quarter to provide the final score

a medium-sized cat native to parts of Africa and Asia
was caught by police officers responding to a reported sighting at about 7:24 a.m

The caracal attempted to hide under the deck
but officers were able to safely and humanely remove the cat and take it into custody
The home is in the same area of Della Drive and Huntington Boulevard
where multiple sightings were reported over the weekend
Police said they searched the area after those reports but did not locate the caracal

Fremd’s defense grounded Hoffman Estates Friday in Palatine
The Vikings defense limited the Hawks to 26 yards on 16 plays in the first half as Fremd built a comfortable lead and rolled past Hoffman 37-6
Both teams came into their Mid-Suburban West opener undefeated in the first four games
It was Fremd that was dominant on both sides of the ball to remain undefeated
“We just went out did and what we do in practice,” Fremd coach Lou Sponsel said
what they have been through in this program.”
The Fremd defense contained Hoffman nearly all night
The Hawks had difficulty find any lanes to use their speed and broke just two plays after the game had been decided
Hoffman also turned the ball over four times
“We are just one ragtag group of guys who love to play football,” said John Stevens
“We want to leave our mark and have people remember us
We just go out there and play the best football we can with the best group of guys in the world
Sponsel said his defense that attacks the ball
We have just a group of good high school players who get after it out there.”

threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to a wide open MarQuan Brewster as the Vikings took an early 7-0 lead
Jason Hardy and Davyn Kuhl forced Hoffman to four consecutive three and outs
Fremd was able to parlay this into a 22-yard field goal and a 45-yard field goal by Shea Sloan
who ran 39 offensive plays in the first half
Fremd went back after Hoffman to begin the second half
this time connecting with Brennan Saxe (4 receptions
85 yards) on a 55-yard touchdown play to put the Vikings up 27-0
“The wind is always a difficult thing for sure,” O’Brien said
Credit to my offensive line and my running backs
They are just a bunch of hard-nosed kids.”

But our offense put us in bad situations in the first half.”

When retired Hoffman Estates police lieutenant Mark Mueller decided to open a restaurant
he couldn’t help himself when it came to the name — I Smell Bacon BBQ & Pub
when you saw the police you’d say ‘I smell bacon,’ so there you go,” he said
not coincidentally — in the space formerly occupied by Burnt Pizza in the Poplar Prairie Stone Crossing shopping center
just north of I-90 on the west side of Route 59
who retired from the force in 2020 after 28 years of service
has always loved grilling and smoking meats
and would frequently bring barbecue to the police station or to parties for the youth football teams he coached
But opening a restaurant is hardly retirement
“When people come in and say this is better than anything they’ve had in Texas
better than anything they’ve had traveling around the country
The meats are cooked in a Southern Pride smoker you can see from the dining room
The menu takes advantage of the versatility of smoked chicken
using them as options to top a variety of starters like Smokehouse Nachos
Chuck Wagon Cheesy Mac and Tumbleweed Tater Tots
chicken and pulled pork can be ordered as sandwiches or wraps
Other sandwich options include the Texas sausage
featuring thick smoked bologna with caramelized onions
American cheese and Miracle Whip on Texas toast
All the meats are offered as individual or combo platters served with sides
are available in half and full slabs as well as rib tips
Sides are a combination of the traditional
and tweaked classics like the two potato salad options
the creamy cilantro and the fried potato salad
including twists on smoked meats such as Tex-Mex Tuesday when they offer a 3-pound
Mueller said he’s been mindful about prices and has purposely kept them low
“We’ve actually had several people that have come in and said
“Our portions are maybe a little big for what we’re charging
but I’d rather have people come in and enjoy it and say they’re coming back than say
Mueller said transitioning to smoking meats inside a restaurant involved a lot of trial and error
especially when it came to choosing the wood and how much to use
which has a series of racks on a rotisserie
“I can do 80 racks of ribs at a time,” he said
“The biggest thing to learn is when to cook.”
you can’t pivot as quickly with barbecue when you start running low
A brisket or pork shoulder can take 11 to 14 hours to cook
they’ll wrap meats once they’re done cooking
which helps break down connective tissues and retain moisture
but it’s not going to be how it should be,” he said
Mueller said the Hoffman Estates location was a natural for him
But it also helped fill a dining niche in the area
“We’re the only barbecue within like 13 miles.”
Hoffman boys basketball coach Peter McBride and his wife Britany gave birth to their second child
which made 3-year-old daughter Bella a big sister on Dec
"We're fortunate to be in good health and (it's) nice to be able to do basketball at the same time," McBride said prior to his team's game versus Sandburg in the Maine East Holiday Tournament final Monday evening
The Park Ridge school brings back very special memories for McBride as this year Hoffman made its tourney debut at the place where he got his start in coaching beginning a four-year stint under Dave Genis back in 2012
"Maine East has always held a special place in my heart," McBride said as it made the move after being at the Jacobs Hinkle Holiday Classic the previous two winter breaks
"We've always made an effort to schedule a nonconference game with them so I can come here every other year and keep that relationship alive
The Hawks added to their mentor's positive vibes as they built an early lead and then held off the Eagles for a 72-59 win and the program’s sixth holiday tournament crown (Thanksgiving or Christmas) in McBride's four years at the helm
Hoffman has gone a combined 24-4 in those contests
"All the credit goes to them this week," McBride said
"In a tournament you don't have a lot of time to prepare
You're really leaning on your kids just to make plays and play with high energy and effort (plus) control what they can and they've done that
Hoffman Estates (12-3) built a double-digit advantage in the opening quarter that became as high as 36-21 in the second when tournament MVP DaQuan Daniels (game-high 18 points
12 rebounds) went coast-to-coast on a layup with 4:03 remaining until half
After an Alwyn Asuncion basket made the score 53-40 with 2:56 left in the third
Sandburg (8-6) used a 16-7 run to get within 60-56 on a basket from Kendall McDowell with 6:07 to play
The Hawks would regain control of the game thanks to another Daniels drive in the paint with 3:19 left that spurred the game-sealing 12-3 surge for the victory
Unfortunately as postgame handshakes were just beginning a near-fight ensued that began with taunting from players from both teams
That led to people coming out onto the floor from the stands
The school staff under the direction of Maine East athletic director Kendall Griffin and a strong presence from the Park Ridge police department quickly quelled the extracurricular activity and got both teams to their respective locker rooms while getting those in attendance out of the fieldhouse
It marked the second time that the building needed to be cleared as a fire alarm went off midway through the first quarter of the third-place game between Carmel and Grayslake North which the 3-10 Corairs won 51-43 over the 8-7 Knights
All-tourney honorees Joey Hernandez (17 points) and Torrey Baskin (14 points) sided in the winning effort for Hoffman while 6-2 junior twins William and Jonah Johnson led the Eagles with 17 and 15 points
Hoffman Estates police are warning community members to be on the lookout for a caracal — a medium-sized wildcat native to parts of Asia
Africa and the Middle East — that’s been spotted wandering around a neighborhood and golf course in the village
It is not yet known where the cat came from or how it got loose in Hoffman Estates, police said in a Facebook post
Sightings have been reported in the area of Della Drive and the Hilldale Golf Course
and between Interstate 90 and Higgins Road
Police said village officials are working with local and federal agencies for proper removal of the cat
Residents should not try to feed the animal and be cautious if they meet the animal
Anyone who knows its whereabouts or its owner should call 911
