An April 29 email from Superintendent David Hornak to the district community said Hope Middle School Principal Anthony Foster resigned Hornak said Dean of Students Antoinette Crabbe would serve as interim president until the end of the school year district spokesperson Amy Bailey said the district would not be commenting further on the resignation Foster has served as principal of Hope Middle School since August 2022 Foster faced repeated racial discrimination argued in his four-count lawsuit filed in Ingham County Circuit Court in November 2023 Sanders did not return messages left by the State Journal He named former Executive Director of Curriculum Steven Netzel and the district as defendants said in the complaint that he believed there had been a "concerted effort to attempt to force him to resign," since he was hired Foster was still principal of Hope Middle School when he filed the suit had a duty to make sure that Foster did not face racial discrimination Foster said Netzel not only failed to stop the harassment but that he allowed him to be subjected to "discrimination humiliation and embarrassment" on the basis of his race Foster first reported incidents of discrimination to Netzel in September of 2022 These incidents included a teacher under his supervision repeatedly berating him in front of staff students and parents and being told by White staff members that other White staff said that "if the District hired a person of color for the position they were not going to follow that person's directives." A message was left for the district's attorney Comstock said Foster's claims that staff and teachers acted inappropriately does not mean he was discriminated by his employers Comstock argued Foster did not show that his employer discriminated against him Comstock also argued that because none of the staff used "racial slurs or other racial statements," it couldn't be proven that the statements or actions were because Foster was Black Netzel and Hornak also investigated Foster's claims after being notified in September 2023 concluded there was no basis for Foster's claims Foster's lawsuit wanted Holt Public Schools and Netzel to be prevented from what the principal perceived as further discriminatory or harassing behavior Foster sought at least $1 million in damages for loss of earnings and other benefits Foster sought attorney fees and compensatory and punitive damages An unsuspecting Kirby Player was just enjoying the fellowship at Clemson University’s 26th annual CAFLS Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament when College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences dean Matt Holt gathered everyone around for a surprise announcement Holt presented Player with the Order of the Palmetto the highest civilian honor awarded by the State of South Carolina “There could be no more fitting recipient than Dr “Kirby has dedicated his entire life to promoting advancing and strengthening agriculture in South Carolina From his early years growing up on his family’s farm in Lee County to his many decades of service here at Clemson University Kirby’s passion for agriculture – and his commitment to developing leaders across agriculture forestry and natural resources – have been unmatched.” Player, lecturer and coordinator of the Palmetto Leadership Program for the Environment, Agriculture and Forestry A three-time graduate of Clemson and employee of the University for 37 years It was even more special to  receive the honor at the golf tournament in front of former students alums and agricultural leaders that he worked with “And then when (Holt) said the Order of the Palmetto it was a moment of disbelief because so many of my heroes and agricultural icons have received that award The idea that it was something that I could receive was the furthest thing from my mind at this point and time in my life “I was just so humbled that people would think of me to nominate I’m a man of faith so gratitude to God and all of those who helped me to get there Just that aspect of thinking of my parents I’ve had 14 deans and interim deans in my whole career So much of what I’ve done has been a function of other people and what they’ve asked me to do All of that went through my mind at one time.” The two have known each other since high school Spencer was in Player’s second cohort of Palmetto LEAF and now serves as a commissioner for the South Carolina Department of Transportation representing the 5th congressional district In his letter to South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster Spencer explained how Player convinced him to participate in Palmetto LEAF “This course has given me and so many others a firm foundation and broad knowledge of business and experiences revolving around our state’s agriculture and forestry resources all the while including the most worthy goal of protecting our environment and ensuring the protection of our most valued assets for generations to come His unbridled enthusiasm for PLEAF and all things agriculture has become contagious to many students and leaders of our beautiful South Carolina.” who approached Player about setting up Palmetto LEAF Palmetto LEAF became the 40th such program in the country and the eighth in the world it will begin recruiting for its fourth cohort “I can think of no one more deserving of the Order of the Palmetto than Dr. Kirby Player,” said Thomas Dobbins, professor and director of Clemson’s Cooperative Extension Service “His unwavering dedication to enhancing the lives of CAFLS students Through his work with the South Carolina Soil and Water Conservation Board he has made significant contributions to conservation practices that benefit all of South Carolina.” Player received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural education in 1983 recreation and tourism management in 1987 and his doctorate in therapeutic recreation in 2015 and mentor,” said University President Jim Clements “He has dedicated his life to advancing agriculture and elevating Clemson University’s land-grant mission of education Player has been awarded the Order of the Palmetto and I am proud of his significant impact on agriculture in the great state of South Carolina and beyond.” Or email us at news@clemson.edu Clemson News is the go-to source for stories and news about the innovations research and accomplishments of the Clemson Family We deliver! notable career in retail leadership including CMO and CEO for its e-commerce arm helping to steer the arts and crafts retailer through a period of change His appointment as Kohl's CEO in January 2025 was seen as an attempt to turn around the struggling department store chain It's unclear what his compensation package looked like at Kohl's but he is reported to have received a signing bonus worth £1.9 million (approximately $2.5 million) at the beginning of his time there – an amount that he is now being asked to reimburse as a result of the controversy Less than four months after he took the helm Kohl's announced his termination for cause saying it was due to 'violations of company policies by directing vendor transactions involving undisclosed conflicts of interest.' celebrating its debut just over 100 days ago Incredibrew started making headlines in January as a health-focused majority of Holt's career has been marked by innovation in e-commerce and merchandising supported by an MBA from the University of Minnesota they have made well over £560,000 (around $750,000) in sales in less than 3 months though it is unclear how that reflects in her compensation package Holt is said to be the 'romantic partner' of Buchanan a detail that has added fuel to the controversy Holt appeared to publicly distance herself from the controversy She definitively stated that while they'd known each other for a decade she had never received compensation from Kohl's on behalf of her Incredibrew business during his time at Michaels when a recruitment agency had attempted to recruit her they had not been in a romantic relationship Their professional paths crossed over a decade ago at Walmart Buchanan's time there lasted over a decade where he moved from managing units to senior executive roles Holt's time at Walmart was also significant with leading roles in e-commerce and merchandising before moving on to CEO positions at Bed Bath & Beyond and Conn's After her brief period at Bed Bath & Beyond Holt stepped into entrepreneurship with Incredibrew aiming to disrupt the coffee market with protein-infused pods It's clear that Holt has had a career marked by innovation but has now been thrust into controversy Buchanan's untimely exit from Kohl's has emphasised the importance of transparency and ethical conduct in ethical leadership Although Holt has been implicated in Buchanan's fall from grace it is not clear yet how this will affect her and her future at Incredibrew ATKINSON – The Atkinson-Stuart Country Club hosted the 2025 West Holt Golf Invite on Saturday In January, Incredibrew was making headlines for launching a 'health conscious coffee'. In April, the brand hit their 100-day-mark taking strides towards their early goals and making well over £560,000 in sales she wrote 'We set ambitious goals for the year and have made remarkable progress in these initial 100 days paving the way to achieving and surpassing our targets.' retail giant Kohl's announced the firing of its CEO drawing attention to her and her business in all the wrong ways The timing was almost unreal—a contrast from Holt's moment of pride to headlines detailing a scandal involving one of America's most recognisable department stores Buchanan's departure was linked to an investigation saying that he had violated Kohl's ethics code The company's board discovered that Buchanan had directed Kohl's to enter into a multimillion-pound consulting deal with a woman with whom he had a personal relationship— Holt The deal was described as 'highly unusual' and was part of a number of undisclosed conflicts of interest leading to his termination from the company Buchanan's ties with Holt stretched back over ten years Their personal relationship reportedly continued into Buchanan's time as CEO of Michaels from 2020 until his move to Kohl's in January 2024 Court documents from his divorce proceedings in Texas documented the romantic relationship who has built her reputation as a serious businesswoman and is now CEO of her own coffee brand is seemingly publicly distancing herself from the scandal but I have not received any compensation for my Incredibrew business from Kohl's,' she explained She also clarified that she was not involved in any romantic relationship with Buchanan at the time she was approached by a recruiting firm Following his exit Buchanan was ordered to surrender all equity awards and reimburse Kohl's a signing bonus worth £1.8 million (approximately $2.5 million) The board appointed Michael Bender as interim CEO marking yet another change in leadership at a company that has struggled with declining sales and store closures In the meeting held shortly after the announcement Bender acknowledged the abrupt leadership change emphasising that the decision was made 'for the good of the company' There were no detailed explanations offered leaving staff and shareholders to piece together the broader story The fallout from Buchanan's actions shows us the importance of transparency and strict adherence to ethical policies While Holt's coffee business remains independent the scandal has cast a spotlight on her as an associate of Buchanan—despite her insistence that there was no ongoing relationship and no involvement in the misconduct By OLIVER HOLT I'm at a stage of life where I tend to glorify the players of yesteryear and so I think of footballers like Colin Bell as City's greatest players but I still believe  De Bruyne is better than all of them the best to pull on the famous sky-blue shirt And yet a few weeks ago, De Bruyne was informed that, after everything he had achieved in Manchester, all the titles he had won, the Premier Leagues and the Champions League he was surplus to requirements at the Etihad and that he would not be offered an extension to his contract but he seemed heartbroken to be leaving a club he loved He has been extremely well renumerated so it is hardly a sob story and I can see De Bruyne's talent is fading City fans love him and they have made that plain. I'm sure he will get a great send-off at the FA Cup final and in City's remaining league games But I don't see any protests about his impending departure Most people think it's the right move for the club De Bruyne has reached the end of his useful life at City so the answer is simple: see ya Liverpool fans have accused Trent Alexander-Arnold of betrayal after he confirmed his exit It is like Kevin De Bruyne leaving Manchester City: fans want to discard them but expect loyalty and it would have happened to Alexander-Arnold eventually There is no talk of family or of duty or of loyalty or of deception it would have happened to Alexander-Arnold and Angel Di Maria at Real Madrid and Jaap Stam at Manchester United and Andy Carroll at Newcastle and countless other players who didn't want to leave clubs that forced them out We are still oddly patriarchal about the player-club relationship as if we cannot shake ourselves free of the idea this is somehow about master and servant And so Alexander-Arnold's decision to leave is couched in pejorative terms like ingratitude and betrayal and disloyalty even though he has given 20 years of his life to a club and a set of supporters he adores None of that means I agree with statements such as 'Alexander-Arnold doesn't owe Liverpool anything' I think he owes them for the care and attention they have given to his development the brilliant coaching at the club's academy that has helped him progress and the faith shown in him by men such as Jurgen Klopp He owes Liverpool for the life they have given him and his family and he owes the fans for the adoration they have lavished on him and the emotions they have sparked in him in moments of joy and celebration Everything about how he behaves suggests Alexander-Arnold is deeply appreciative of all that has been done for him But the club and the fans owe Alexander-Arnold He has given them moments of joy and abandon and pure exultation and sheer wonderful escapism that will last for ever moments that will sit high in the iconography of a club even with Liverpool's glorious achievements about the corner taken against Barcelona at Anfield in that Champions League semi-final second leg in May 2019 the corner that fooled the Barcelona defence and set up Divock Origi to score the goal that sealed one of the greatest comebacks any of us have witnessed on one of the greatest nights English football has witnessed Alexander-Arnold owes Liverpool for the faith shown in him by the likes of boss Jurgen Klopp He also owes Liverpool for the life they have given him and his family during his time at Anfield His greatest moments do not deserve to be tarnished by idiotic accusations of ingratitude It was one of the most audacious and clever and brilliantly executed pieces of skill I've ever seen And it was just part of a groaning portfolio of sumptuous passes and curling arrowing free-kicks that have made Alexander-Arnold such a wonderful player to watch during his time at Anfield Those memories are gifts that keep on giving Those memories do not deserve to be tarnished by idiotic accusations of ingratitude The truth is Alexander-Arnold was good for Liverpool and Liverpool were good for him He has not broken his contract or agitated to leave ahead of time or refused to play or derailed Liverpool's title challenge or bad-mouthed the club or the city and made a huge contribution to the winning of a record-equalling 20th league title He should be departing for the challenge of playing abroad for Real Madrid because I loved watching him play at English league grounds but I know I'm lucky I got to see him shine for as long as I did I still hope Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari provides him with the platform he craves to win his eighth world drivers' title but the chances of that happening are looking increasingly forlorn A spat between a driver and his team is not unknown but for Hamilton to aim a public and brutally disparaging barb at Ferrari during the Miami Grand Prix by saying 'have a tea break while you're at it' to ridicule their decision-making process is the type of insult to professionalism and competence that both sides may find it hard to recover from The chances of Lewis Hamilton winning an eighth world title at Ferrari are looking very slim has won his first trophy in the professional game with Bayern Munich Only a curmudgeon – or Arsenal supporters – would begrudge Harry Kane who won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich on Sunday Kane is weighed down with individual awards for scoring feats already but his triumph in Germany is a reward for one of England's greatest goalscorers and a brilliant professional The comments below have not been moderated By posting your comment you agree to our house rules Do Buchanan for an "inappropriate" business decision The American department store retail chain has appointed Chairman Michael Bender as its interim CEO on Thursday The change comes after Kohl's found that Buchanan had committed to a suspect business decision Buchanan was accused of instructing Kohl's to enter into a "highly unusual" with a woman whom he has a romantic relationship with reportedly worked at Walmart with Buchanan years ago He ended up leaving Walmart to run crafts chain Michael’s and took the Kohl’s CEO job in November is serving as a consultant and the founder of Incredibrew According to the Wall Street Journal, Buchanan did not disclose his relationship with Holt when making a deal: A Kohl’s board investigation found that Buchanan violated the company’s code of conduct in two instances with a vendor with whom he had a personal relationship and whom it didn’t name, according to a regulatory filing. The filing said he directed the retailer to conduct business with this vendor and he caused the company to enter into a multimillion-dollar consulting agreement, where that person was part of the consulting team. Kohl’s said Buchanan didn’t disclose the relationship as required by its code of ethics and determined the conduct in both cases constituted cause for termination. Buchanan will forfeit all equity awards from Kohl’s and be required to reimburse the company on a prorated basis a signing bonus worth $2.5 million.  Kohl's numbers have been down this year, too. The American retail giant said that sales were down about 4 percent in the most recent quarter. The company is expected to post another loss when it reports sales later this spring. Buchanan failed to disclose his conflict of interest It also said Buchanan's firing is unrelated to the performance of Kohl's which has seen declining sales and profits The Wall Street Journal identified Holt as the unnamed person referenced in the filing Holt who was a senior adviser to Boston Consulting Group and founder of Incredibrew, a coffee company. Holt has since been fired by Boston Consulting.   More: Who is Chandra Holt? Her connection to the fired Kohl's CEO Ashley Buchanan and link to the Jonas Brothers Ladd wasn’t surprised by Buchanan's firing “He had this pattern of acting like he was above the law That he could bend and break any rule that he wanted,” Ladd said I said this guy is going to bend and break the rules He’s going to do everything he can to cut deals to make a name for himself quickly at Kohl’s.”  Ladd said the relationship between Buchanan and Holt was an “open secret” when the two were at Walmart “It’s embarrassing that Kohl’s and Boston Consulting Group especially are acting like this is a surprise,” Ladd said “You would think if you’re hiring a CEO and he’s gone through a divorce you want to make sure you read that to see what kind of behavior he engaged in.”  The firing could lead other Kohl's employees to "jump ship," said Margaret Hughes-Morgan a Marquette University associate professor of management “People are starting to lose faith in Kohl’s,” she said "This has been going on for years and this one is an extremely bad black eye because when it comes down to it you have to look to the board of directors for guidance," Hughes-Morgan said "Especially for a company that has faltered to the point that Kohl’s has.”  But the board should have and they really didn’t do their due diligence on this guy.”  Kohl's stock ended the week up almost 8% with a May 2 closing price of $7.50 a share That makes him the third person to serve as top executive in 2025 “The board is terrible,” Hughes-Morgan said “They let Michelle Gass run it into the ground Kingsbury was basically kind of an afterthought and they didn’t do their due diligence on Buchanan.”  If there’s one bright spot in this C-suite drama it's that Kohl’s board acted quickly He also said Kohl's shouldn't rush in choosing its next CEO “It’s more important to find the right person,” Swartz said Swartz is interested in what will happen with Chief Financial Officer Jill Timm. She's been with the company since 1999 and has been CFO since 2019. “It’ll be interesting to see if she still sticks around,” Swartz said typically the CFO either resigns or is fired or whatever "Because typically the new CEO brings in somebody new but she has been with the company through multiple administrations.”  Kohl’s has two major events coming this month: the annual shareholders meeting on May 14 and its first quarter earnings report on May 29 “They need to reassure investors that just because there’s no permanent CEO That some of the things that have been discussed are still moving forward,” Swartz said Ladd believes Kohl’s should tell its shareholders the company it trying to find a buyer Kohl’s is in a pattern of losing,” Ladd said “Just because they hire a new CEO doesn’t mean that’s going to stop it’s going to take them months if not a year or more to even stabilize Kohl’s.”  Swartz believes Kohl’s still has a place in America’s retail landscape − but perhaps at a different scale Kohl's operates more than 1,100 stores and has more than 90,000 employees nationwide “I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of people lining up to be the CEO of Kohl’s,” Swartz said “Because they recognize that this is a troubled company And for the topflight candidates out there this is probably not on the top of list of jobs that they want.”  When Chanté Holt first began her undergraduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005 But before she was able to finish her degree her family could no longer afford for her to continue so she left to begin working taking a break from school that would last 10 years Now, Holt, who will receive her master’s degree in urban and regional planning in May from the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs is thankful for that hiatus because it allowed her to consider her interests with a sharpened perspective looking at my experiences and really connecting with my community trying to figure out exactly what were my passions what were the things I actually wanted to do with my life,” she said I started to learn about issues with urban planning” such as food deserts and housing discrimination Holt returned to her undergraduate studies in 2018 using her tuition benefit as a VCU employee her major had shifted to urban and regional studies an area of study that aligned with her new interests Coming back after so many years away was daunting especially because she was also working full time with VCU Parking & Transportation “I went back in my 30s after having not done it for 10 years,” Holt said I already knew that I was going to need a slow start.”To “dip her toe in,” she took one online class in the summer before ramping up her schedule trying to work around her hours in the office and it didn’t take long to become acclimated She eventually earned her bachelor’s degree from VCU in 2022 And she didn’t want to stop there – she knew she wasn’t finished with her educational journey Before starting the urban and regional planning master’s program, Holt transferred to a new role with the Office of Grants & Contracts Accounting in the University Controller’s Office at VCU As when she was with Parking & Transportation she received steadfast support for her academic pursuits she said – even when she wasn’t expecting it I had some professors ask me about doing a study abroad trip,” Holt recalled but I work full time so I don’t think I’ll be able to get three weeks off to go do this.’ But when I mentioned it to my team manager      as part of the Trans-Atlantic Seminar in Urban and Regional Planning which offers VCU students the opportunity to work with students from the Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University to compare and contrast how Germany and the U.S The experience was so fulfilling that Holt is planning to return to Europe this year as a graduation present to herself but after years of juggling work and school Holt is content to wait before returning to the classroom “It’ll be a little bit before I even think about getting into my field,” she said so my goal at the moment is to really concentrate on my work and try to grow my skills as a grant accountant.” the VCU community has been “really positive and very helpful,” she said Co-workers and supervisors have demonstrated that they were invested in Holt “not only as a worker but as a person.” and I like the fact that there is so much support – not even just with talking to people but there are also so many options and services to utilize,” she said Holt hopes that seeing her decked out in her cap and gown will inspire her 7-year-old nephew “We’re making sure he gets to see me graduate so that he can say that’s something I can look forward to.” She even plans to give him a bag of VCU swag both to help him feel included – and to give him a little push toward the Ram family And he’s not the only one she hopes to encourage nontraditional students take the leap to going back and getting their education because it has been fulfilling,” Holt said “I can’t even imagine what my life would have been like if I wasn’t able to take that journey.” Subscribe to VCU News at newsletter.vcu.edu and receive a selection of stories news clips and event listings in your inbox was a harmonious fit for speech language CEO Ashley Buchanan took on the role in mid-January I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice Kohl’s has fired CEO Ashley Buchanan after an investigation found he told the company to enter two business deals involving a romantic partner Buchanan, who took on the position in January, was fired Wednesday after an investigation found he directed Kohl’s to enter a “highly unusual” business deal with a company whose founder he had personal ties to, SEC filings indicate The terms of that business deal were “favorable” to the vendor He also entered Kohl’s into a “multi-million dollar” consulting agreement with a team that the individual was part of He then failed to disclose that personal relationship to Kohl’s The filing did not identify the founder and consultant. But, The Wall Street Journal reports her name is Chandra Holt and the two had a romantic relationship Buchanan and Holt met while they were both working at Walmart Buchanan left Walmart in 2020 to serve as CEO of Michaels while Holt left in 2021 to serve as CEO of Bed Bath and Beyond She later became a consultant and founded Incredibrew a coffee brand containing vitamins and minerals Buchanan reshared one of Holt’s posts advertising the product on LinkedIn earlier this year. In addition to leaving his post, Buchanan must now forfeit all equity awards from Kohl’s. He also has to reimburse the company on a prorated basis for his $2.5 million signing bonus. Kohl’s Chair of the Board Michael Bender will now serve as interim CEO. This comes after Kohl’s announced it will be closing more than two dozen “underperforming stores” this year. The company closed 15 of these stores at the end of March, and will also shutter its San Bernardino E-commerce Fulfillment Center this month. Kohl’s 2024 financial report showed a 7.2 percent decrease in net sales to $15.4 billion. In addition, Kohl’s comparable sales dropped by 6.5 percent. “We have identified key areas of focus and are taking action in 2025 to reposition Kohl’s for future success,” Buchanan said earlier this year. “Our customers expect great product, great value, and a great experience from Kohl’s. I am confident that the areas we identified will deliver on what customers want and expect from Kohl’s.” The Independent has contacted Buchanan and Holt for comment.
