Texas — The parents of a 6-year-old boy with autism are accusing Meyers Elementary School in Hondo of neglect after their son
requires assistance as part of his educational plan
He gets 240 minutes a day from the state so that he can get assistance in the restroom," said Gonzales
This incident marks the third time Jose has returned home in such a condition
The family has been advocating for their son's needs
but they claim the school has not taken adequate responsibility
Gonzales recounted a conversation with the assistant superintendent
"I was told by the assistant superintendent that my son needs to learn how to advocate for himself
and he just found his voice at five and a half years old
"They want him to advocate for himself when he's barely starting to interact
barely starting to talk," said Jose Gonzales
Jose's parents have spoken with the school's principal and the assistant superintendent
but they feel their concerns have not been addressed
But I never got a genuine apology," Gonzales said
Attempts to speak with the superintendent were unsuccessful
"We were wanting to speak to the superintendent
We were told that she didn't want to deal with it," Gonzales said
He wants us for security," Gonzales said
School officials have not commented on the situation

HONDO
Hondo police were called to investigate a bizarre find: human teeth buried in a residential yard
Police received the call on March 4 and uncovered over 100 human teeth in total
according to a Facebook post from the Hondo Police Department
Investigators quickly found a logical explanation for the discovery
A local dentist confirmed the teeth were real
"extracted from living patients long ago," the post said
the department learned that the previous homeowners were local dentists who practiced in the area 50 to 70 years ago
Family members told police there is a dental tradition of burying teeth for good luck when selling a home
“While this case was more mysterious than menacing
no crime was committed—just some old-school dental superstition at work," the department said
if you ever find yourself unearthing unexpected ‘smiles’ in your backyard
don’t panic… but maybe call us just in case."

The actor has served as the official voice of Winnie the Pooh since 1988
as he also counts the likes of Darkwing Duck and Hondo Ohnaka among his many credits
We first met the latter character in The Clone Wars
and the popularity of the pirate and smuggler later saw him featured heavily in Star Wars Rebels
He's even put centre stage as an incredibly realistic animatronic as part of the "Smuggler's Run" ride in Disneyland and Disney World
We recently talked to Cummings about his work in Angel Studios' King of Kings and wondered whether the door is open to him potentially voicing Hondo in a live-action Star Wars project
There's a precedent for that as The Book of Boba Fett saw Corey Burton reprise his role as bounty hunter
we'll see what is in store for our friend Hondo Ohnaka," the legendary actor teased

Just send me all your money and I promise I will take good care of you!'"
"I did the facial recognition for Hondo Ohnaka for an upcoming project
That has to be for The Mandalorian and Grogu
Star Wars fans were disappointed when Hondo didn't show up in Skeleton Crew
though Andor season 2 is another possibility
it may have also been something for the new Mando theming coming to "Smuggler's Run" this May
Cummings was also kind enough to share the story of how Disney broke the news to him that he'd be returning as Hondo for the already-iconic theme park ride:
I remember it was so funny because - of course
this was years ago - Disney called me in and said
'We'd like to bring you down to Glendale to our facility.' It's where they do the Imagineering; it's a cross between imagination and engineering and is where they meet and out comes some Disney extravaganza."
and it was not unlike when you're walking through the storyboards for a movie
There were big 5ft by 7ft drawings and photographs
I realised halfway through that they were pitching me
'I think it's amazing,' and they go
'Is this something you would be interested in?' I said
It really is the best ride I've ever been on
Rise of the Resistance and Smuggler's Run
and they're literally right next to each other at Disneyland and Disney World
it's worth it just to go and see this - guess what
Make sure to watch the full interview above as Cummings talks about his work in King of Kings

MEDINA COUNTY
Texas – A group of firefighters who have served the City of Hondo for more than a century is now gone
a fire chief and equipment left the Hondo Volunteer Fire Company with a big decision to make
One hundred fifteen years of service is on pause
The Hondo Volunteer Fire Company covered more than 500 square miles for 115 years but no more
The end of the road comes after HVFC President Philip Batteau said they couldn’t get on the same page as Medina County Emergency Services District 6 (ESD 6)
It’s getting my firemen the gear they need.”
“This is taxpayers’ money we’re talking about,” Medina County Emergency Services District (ESD) 6 President Mark Blythe said
air packs were a piece of equipment and they couldn’t get the full amount they asked for because of the county’s ESD budget
“So we look at that and we go through the budget and we make some changes and this year
we cut some stuff out that wasn’t necessary,” Blythe said
Air packs are used so firefighters can breathe clean oxygen while fighting a fire
“We don’t even have a current roster of how many members they have,” Blythe said
How many people are certified to even use these packs?”
Another item reduced because of the budget was extrication tools
These tools spread parts of a vehicle apart to pull someone out of a serious crash
there’s cheaper tools out there,‘” Batteau said
“We understand there are cheaper tools out there
but the tools we wanted to buy integrate with the tools that we have now.”
it can be swapped out and can continue to be used
The two entities also can’t agree on a chief
The volunteer company already has a chief and has a way of voting the chief in
It’s unclear if these issues will ever be resolved
Emergency Services District 1 will provide fire coverage in Hondo
“There will be no lack in coverage,” Blythe said
The volunteer company was a crew of 25 people who volunteered on a call-in basis
the people who were available to be called in responded to the fire
Medina County ESD 1’s crew of three firefighters must fill that gap
President Blythe said it shouldn’t be a problem because neighboring departments will be available for backup as needed
“That’s the way it’s been done forever,” Blythe said
Blythe said the term of this intermediate time of a three-man crew is expected to be six months to a year
giving them time to get a “new chief on board.”
Blythe said he would like to start “hiring our own folks or creating a department of our own.”

When Vanden High of Fairfield, with an enrollment of 1,619, came to Long Beach for the CIF Division 3-A state championship bowl game at Veterans Stadium on Saturday night, running back Noah Penunuri tried to prove no program is mightier. The junior put the Kares on his back and ran for 221 yards and four touchdowns, weaving and fighting for every yard and even while using trickery for his first score.
And in overtime, after he brought the score within one on a touchdown run, Penunuri needed just one more big play — to convert a two-point conversion to send Rio Hondo’s sideline into hysterics. But all storybook tales don’t have joyous endings. Penunuri came up short at the one-yard line, sending Vanden’s sideline onto the field in glee with a 42-41 victory over Rio Hondo (13-2) to close the season.
“We lose together, we win together,” said Penunuri, who ended the season with 30 rushing touchdowns. “We couldn’t get it done for the seniors — that’s what hurts the most.
Vanden (13-2) used a strong performance from quarterback Kalani Mcleod, who ended his senior year with a 370-yard, two-touchdown performance. His second touchdown was the game-winner, connecting with Keitaro Davis on fourth and three with an eight-yard pass into the back of the end zone.
“Huge props to [Vanden] for sticking it out, back and forth,” said Rio Hondo coach Mark Carson. “Great state championship game. We were one stop away, really from winning it and we just couldn’t get that big stop. We needed it.”
Carson’s playcalling almost led Rio Hondo to victory. To start the second half, the Kares pulled off a successful onside kick, leading to a drive that ended with Penunuri punching the ball in from the one-yard line. In the fourth quarter, Penunuri provided Rio Hondo a lead again, beating a Vanden blitz into the end zone on a 14-yard touchdown run.
The ruthless attack of Rio Hondo’s ballcarriers met Vanden’s Mcleod head-on but ultimately led to the signal caller calling game in overtime.
“Contrasting styles,” Carson said. “No one really stopped anybody. They just got that two-point conversion [stop] at the end. We made that decision [to go for two] back in the summer.”
With zero regrets on the final play call, Carson rallied his team together for one last huddle and prayer. Penunuri helped up an injured player, putting his teammate’s body weight on his shoulder as they crept in to listen. Rio Hondo, win or lose, is a brotherhood, Carson said.
St. Pius X-St. Matthias coach Devah Thomas had tears well up in his eyes, turning them bright red as each Warriors player walked up to their coach to console the leader who brought them from a 1-9 record to the state championship game.
The end to a season to remember for St. Pius X-St. Matthias (6-10) meant mid-December heartbreak. Sonora (13-2) claimed its first state championship in the CIF Division 4-A bowl game on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach, using 362 yards rushing in 59 carries to push the squad from Tuolumne County to glory.
“I know I’m doing the right thing,” Thomas said of his team’s loss. “If they love me like that, then I know I’m going in the right direction. … I won’t want it no other way. These kids, man, they did their best.”
St Pius X-St. Matthias quarterback Jassi Williams unleashes a pass during the CIF Division 4-A state bowl championship game against Sonora on Saturday at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. (Nick Koza) Sonora quarterback Eli Ingalls only threw three passes and two ended up as touchdowns. The junior was second-best on the ground with 117 rushing yards in 21 carries.
St. Pius X-St. Matthias junior quarterback Jassi Williams used a dual-threat approach himself and rallied the Warriors with 298 passing yards and two touchdowns, plus receiving touchdowns. He had two passes intercepted.
“We turned the corner, man,” Thomas said. “We’re going in the right direction as a program. We’re doing everything right to get these kids going, and that’s all I can ask for.”

Texas - The Hondo Volunteer Fire Department's contract was terminated with Medina County on Thursday night
According to a Facebook post from the City of Hondo
the Medina County Emergency Services District (ESD) 6 and the Hondo Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) terminated their contract
The county will bring in paid firefighters from Emergency Services District 1
The process for calling 911 during a fire emergency remains unchanged
Plans for a new urban trail along the Rio Hondo in El Monte are moving forward with following a recent approval granted by the California Natural Resources Agency.
According to an environmental notice distributed late last month
the organization Amigos de los Rios has received clearance to develop a new trail and recreation area along the western bank of the Rio Hondo between Valley Boulevard to the south and Lower Azusa Road to the north
The space spans approximately 1.2 miles and accounts for six acres of land.
which is described as an opportunity to expand recreational areas in a park-poor community
According to the organization's website
Amigos de los Rios has worked since 2006 to bring new green space to the Rio Hondo corridor
including a river trail along the Peck Water Conservation Lake a short distance to the northeast
More than 15 acres of green space have been built along the channel
which is intended as a part of the "Emerald Necklace Project," which calls for new parks and open space amenities along waterways such as the Rio Hondo
The southern terminus of the project corridor at Valley Boulevard sits within walking distance of both the El Monte Bus Terminal and Metrolink's El Monte Station
which have recently spurred the development of new housing and commercial uses on nearby sites

Residents on the outskirts of Rio Hondo in Cameron County are still dealing with standing floodwaters nearly a week after a severe thunderstorm swept the entire Rio Grande Valley
and are worried looters may start taking advantage
Among the concerned residents on Centerline Road is Berta Ibarra
all my family is scared,” Ibarra said
Ibarra's home of close to 20 years is surrounded by water
She's now starting to throw out all of her water soaked belongings and memories that go with them
I am not going to abandon my home,” Ibarra said
“Little by little we will get on our feet
The family's property has been underwater for almost a week
Ibarra said she and her family are doing everything they can to try and clean up their home
but they are wondering when help is on the way
Cameron County Precinct 3 Commissioner David Garza said plans are being discussed to help prevent flooding along Centerline Road in the future.
“There is nowhere to pump the water out to in those roads
there is nowhere for the water to go,” Garza said
“The drainage district was telling me they have a proposed project to enlarge a ditch that will hopefully be able to move water there."
Ibarra says as she waits for the water to go down
she's now concerned about possible looters.
“I lock my house and close my windows
I am not going to make it easy for them,” Ibarra said
Cameron County Sheriff Manuel Treviño says they have not gotten any calls for looting
but he is encouraging the community to stay vigilant
but we are focusing on those areas we know there are some homes that have been left alone,” Treviño said
Treviño said anyone who takes items from a person yard can be charged with theft
those charges could be upgraded to burglary
Officials are urging all residents to report any storm damage online to the state.
