When Vanden High of Fairfield, with an enrollment of 1,619, came to Long Beach for the CIF Division 3-A state championship bowl game at Veterans Stadium on Saturday night, running back Noah Penunuri tried to prove no program is mightier. The junior put the Kares on his back and ran for 221 yards and four touchdowns, weaving and fighting for every yard and even while using trickery for his first score. And in overtime, after he brought the score within one on a touchdown run, Penunuri needed just one more big play — to convert a two-point conversion to send Rio Hondo’s sideline into hysterics. But all storybook tales don’t have joyous endings. Penunuri came up short at the one-yard line, sending Vanden’s sideline onto the field in glee with a 42-41 victory over Rio Hondo (13-2) to close the season. “We lose together, we win together,” said Penunuri, who ended the season with 30 rushing touchdowns. “We couldn’t get it done for the seniors — that’s what hurts the most. Vanden (13-2) used a strong performance from quarterback Kalani Mcleod, who ended his senior year with a 370-yard, two-touchdown performance. His second touchdown was the game-winner, connecting with Keitaro Davis on fourth and three with an eight-yard pass into the back of the end zone. “Huge props to [Vanden] for sticking it out, back and forth,” said Rio Hondo coach Mark Carson. “Great state championship game. We were one stop away, really from winning it and we just couldn’t get that big stop. We needed it.” Carson’s playcalling almost led Rio Hondo to victory. To start the second half, the Kares pulled off a successful onside kick, leading to a drive that ended with Penunuri punching the ball in from the one-yard line. In the fourth quarter, Penunuri provided Rio Hondo a lead again, beating a Vanden blitz into the end zone on a 14-yard touchdown run. The ruthless attack of Rio Hondo’s ballcarriers met Vanden’s Mcleod head-on but ultimately led to the signal caller calling game in overtime. “Contrasting styles,” Carson said. “No one really stopped anybody. They just got that two-point conversion [stop] at the end. We made that decision [to go for two] back in the summer.” With zero regrets on the final play call, Carson rallied his team together for one last huddle and prayer. Penunuri helped up an injured player, putting his teammate’s body weight on his shoulder as they crept in to listen. Rio Hondo, win or lose, is a brotherhood, Carson said. St. Pius X-St. Matthias coach Devah Thomas had tears well up in his eyes, turning them bright red as each Warriors player walked up to their coach to console the leader who brought them from a 1-9 record to the state championship game. The end to a season to remember for St. Pius X-St. Matthias (6-10) meant mid-December heartbreak. Sonora (13-2) claimed its first state championship in the CIF Division 4-A bowl game on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach, using 362 yards rushing in 59 carries to push the squad from Tuolumne County to glory. “I know I’m doing the right thing,” Thomas said of his team’s loss. “If they love me like that, then I know I’m going in the right direction. … I won’t want it no other way. These kids, man, they did their best.” St Pius X-St. Matthias quarterback Jassi Williams unleashes a pass during the CIF Division 4-A state bowl championship game against Sonora on Saturday at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. (Nick Koza) Sonora quarterback Eli Ingalls only threw three passes and two ended up as touchdowns. The junior was second-best on the ground with 117 rushing yards in 21 carries. St. Pius X-St. Matthias junior quarterback Jassi Williams used a dual-threat approach himself and rallied the Warriors with 298 passing yards and two touchdowns, plus receiving touchdowns. He had two passes intercepted. “We turned the corner, man,” Thomas said. “We’re going in the right direction as a program. We’re doing everything right to get these kids going, and that’s all I can ask for.” High School Sports Subscribe for unlimited accessSite Map SAN ANTONIO - The Hondo Police Department says members of their criminal investigation division responded to a home and uncovered over 100 human teeth buried in a yard The department says members of their criminal investigation division responded to a home and uncovered over 100 human teeth buried in a yard Police responded to the unusual call on Tuesday they discovered that the previous owners of the home were local dentists who practiced in Hondo about 50 to 70 years ago Hondo police say it was apparently a dental tradition or folklore to bury teeth for good luck when selling a home Hondo police say no crime was committed; it was just some old-school dental superstition at work accused of pointing a firearm at her ex-husband outside a Hondo High School softball game during the Hondo High School varsity softball game against Comfort High School officers responded to reports of a disturbance involving a weapon outside the left outfield fence of the softball stadium Hondo Police Chief Justin Soza said in a Facebook post The disturbance was a child custody dispute involving four people grabbed a firearm from a vehicle and pointed it at her ex-husband A male who was involved in the disturbance “immediately disarmed” Klatt Soza said Klatt and the male then left the area Officers were able to track Klatt’s location as she traveled toward Interstate 35 The Medina County Sheriff’s Office was able to locate Klatt north of Moore and she was taken into custody without further incident Klatt was booked into the Medina County Jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place and terroristic threat against a family/household member – aggravated assault “We want to reassure our community that incidents of this nature are taken seriously and we remain committed to maintaining a safe environment for all residents,” Soza said “We appreciate the public’s trust and cooperation as we continue to work together to keep Hondo safe.” Texas – The Hondo High School’s FFA Meats team was named the Reserve National Champion over the weekend Five students from the Hondo High School FFA Meats team competed against teams from across the U.S at Colorado State University and came home as champions and recent graduates Ryan Gilliam and Cooper Molitor were the five students who placed in the championship and their hard work really paid off,” said Shayla Henrich an agriculture science teacher at Hondo High School “They are all very talented and hardworking students.” The Rio Hondo lift bridge reopened on Thursday according to the Texas Department of Transportation The Rio Hondo lift bridge went out of service after a vehicle struck the junction box that powers the bridge Road closures caused by crews attempting to repair the junction box were in effect during the repairs.  Rio Hondo experienced several inches of rain following overnight rain on Thursday The rain comes after the area experienced very dry conditions The Hondo Rodeo Fest brought three rounds of World Class rodeo action and some of the biggest acts in country music to Phoenix The packed three days at Chase Field paid out a total of $1.1 million and there were only eight contestants in each event Here are the winners of the inaugural event 258.5 points on 3 Steer Wrestling: Dakota Eldridge 13.22 seconds on 3 Team Roping: Erich Rogers/Paul Eaves 14.83 seconds on 3 Saddle Bronc Riding: Ryder Wright and Zeke Thurston 23.92 seconds on 3 Breakaway Roping: Martha Angelone 16.0 seconds on 3 Barrel Racing: Lisa Lockhart 41.88 seconds on 3 Bull Riding: John Crimber All content © copyright The Cowboy Channel Do Not Sell My Personal Information is your neighborhood reporter for Alice and the western viewing areas.<br/> Our four-legged neighbors are a critical companion in our daily lives K9 Hondo was that for the City of Premont and his handler who worked with the Premont Police Department died earlier in the week from natural causes K9 Hondo was a crisis intervention dog with the Premont PD The community was heartbroken to hear the news the owner and operator of Vernon's Cafe said Juan Rordiguez owns and operates Vernon’s Cafe He got to know the 4-year-old K9 and Samaniego through his restaurant They would just come in and everybody was just so attached to him every time he would come in - environmental notice distributed late last month the organization Amigos de los Rios has received clearance to develop a new trail and recreation area along the western bank of the Rio Hondo between Valley Boulevard to the south and Lower Azusa Road to the north The space spans approximately 1.2 miles and accounts for six acres of land.  which is described as an opportunity to expand recreational areas in a park-poor community According to the organization's website Amigos de los Rios has worked since 2006 to bring new green space to the Rio Hondo corridor including a river trail along the Peck Water Conservation Lake a short distance to the northeast More than 15 acres of green space have been built along the channel which is intended as a part of the "Emerald Necklace Project," which calls for new parks and open space amenities along waterways such as the Rio Hondo The southern terminus of the project corridor at Valley Boulevard sits within walking distance of both the El Monte Bus Terminal and Metrolink's El Monte Station which have recently spurred the development of new housing and commercial uses on nearby sites Twitter / Facebook / LinkedIn / Threads / Instagram / Bluesky Residents on the outskirts of Rio Hondo in Cameron County are still dealing with standing floodwaters nearly a week after a severe thunderstorm swept the entire Rio Grande Valley and are worried looters may start taking advantage Among the concerned residents on Centerline Road is Berta Ibarra all my family is scared,” Ibarra said Ibarra's home of close to 20 years is surrounded by water She's now starting to throw out all of her water soaked belongings and memories that go with them I am not going to abandon my home,” Ibarra said “Little by little we will get on our feet The family's property has been underwater for almost a week Ibarra said she and her family are doing everything they can to try and clean up their home but they are wondering when help is on the way Cameron County Precinct 3 Commissioner David Garza said plans are being discussed to help prevent flooding along Centerline Road in the future.  “There is nowhere to pump the water out to in those roads there is nowhere for the water to go,” Garza said “The drainage district was telling me they have a proposed project to enlarge a ditch that will hopefully be able to move water there." Ibarra says as she waits for the water to go down she's now concerned about possible looters.  “I lock my house and close my windows I am not going to make it easy for them,” Ibarra said Cameron County Sheriff Manuel Treviño says they have not gotten any calls for looting but he is encouraging the community to stay vigilant but we are focusing on those areas we know there are some homes that have been left alone,” Treviño said Treviño said anyone who takes items from a person yard can be charged with theft those charges could be upgraded to burglary Officials are urging all residents to report any storm damage online to the state.
