A jury convicted a Kaplan man of murder for hiring a contract killer who left two dead in Montegut
Beaux Cormier was found guilty of one count of first-degree murder
one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the Jan
19 in 32nd Judicial District Court Judge Randal Bethancourt’s Houma courtroom
Jurors deliberated for just over an hour before delivering the guilty verdicts
During his own testimony he admitted to having sex with his 16-year-old niece
The families cried and held hands as each verdict was read
the prosecutors hugged each other in triumph
First and second-degree murder each carries mandatory life sentences
and attempted first-degree murder carries up to 50 years
Cormier faced trial for the third-degree rape in Vermillion Parish
According to prosecutors Dennis Elfret and Chris Erny
it was the threat of conviction in that trial that motivated Cormier to hire two hitmen
Cormier has a history of sex crimes against juveniles
the two quarreled over the meaning of guilt
and when he admitted to having sex with the teenager
and a stifled “disgusting” could be heard escaping the onlookers
He placed his hands in a prayer position in front of his mouth
a moment that was emphasized in his closing argument
“I didn’t dirty him up,” Elfret reminded jurors
Elfret told jurors that based on Cormier’s testimony
there were only two options: either he knew nothing about the two men's plans and actions
or he hired them to avoid going back to prison
Cormier’s own cell phone web search history
“What happens if a plaintiff dies before a criminal court
Is a 16-year-old still considered a kid in court
What happens to rape charges if the parent dies?” were among searches in his phone
The phone also included a GPS image of the hitman’s vehicle on the way to the murders
Wilson was found guilty of the first-degree murder of 34-year-old Brittany Cormier
the second-degree murder of 37-year-old Hope Nettleton and attempted first-degree murder for 18-year-old Chelsie Bourque
Jurors were shown video and photos of the carnage left in Wilson’s wake after he entered the building
pushed past Brittany Cormier’s husband Donnovan Martin
Bourque was studying in a back room with her girlfriend
Martin ran to his neighbor’s house to get help when the gunman turned to face Hope Nettleton
She was visiting the family when the gunman barged in
Brittany Cormier told Wilson she was Bourque and was shot dead with a .40 caliber
Bourque and her girlfriend hid in a closet and called 911
please hurry,” Bourque said to the 911 operator
The operator asked if anyone was still breathing
and the two ran to the house in time to see Wilson flee to a white truck and drive away
He rushed to her side and performed CPR until paramedics took over
he was paid $4,000 upfront for the execution
The truck used in the crime was owned by Eskine
Eskine and Wilson had nearly attacked the family months prior
after that incident he wanted no part of the job
He said he didn’t even want to lend Wilson his truck
Eskine entered a plea agreement with the Terrebonne Parish District Attorney's Office
In exchange for testifying in the two trials

Cormier took the stand and said he knew nothing of the two hitmen's plans or actions
He said he never hid his anger with Bourque for accusing him of rape
argued this attack was an attempt by the two men to curry favor with Cormier
who recently came into a large amount of money
Ambeau argued that there was no direct evidence tying his client to the murders
He showed jurors an image from the Sistine Chapel
with a missing puzzle piece where the two fingers nearly touch as he emphasized the lack of direct evidence
He said the prosecutors focused on his sex crimes to emotionally charge everyone against his client so a guilty verdict would be easier
“It makes him a pretty terrible human being,” Ambeau said
“It’s a whole lot easier to have a feeling about this case.”

Louisiana's Twinfest has been rescheduled to April because of bad weather
Founder Cherry Wilmore rescheduled the Houma festival to Sunday
The decision was made Friday after consulting with sponsors and the Terrebonne Parish Government
"Due to the weather we had to reschedule Twinfest," she said
and we just preferred not to risk the safety of the public."
Houma's second annual Twinfest will focus on family games
collecting the life stories of twins and multiples
Twinfest Louisiana is the primary fundraiser for CHeriSH Times Two

Money raised through concessions and raffles will go toward educational aid for at-risk children
“We want the next generation to have an easier transition out of foster care than we had,” Cherry Wilmore said
This year’s Twinfest will have a focus on families

Video footage of a Houma party cut short when two groups opened fire was shown to jurors Thursday
“You can see the victim’s torso bent in half… the victim has already been struck,” retired Detective Robert Lottinger said
He explained that those behind Carr returned gunfire
"They’re just running and returning fire.”

Terrion Robinson faces a charge of second-degree murder in relation to the shooting death of Carr
14 in Judge Jason Dagate's Houma courtroom
This is the second time Robinson faces trial after the first was declared a mistrial because jurors could not reach a verdict
Carr was struck three times: once in his right temple
once in his right bicep and once in his calf muscle
Prosecutors say the head wound was caused by an AR-15 fired during the shootout
The scene was recreated for jurors through video
bullet casings and projectiles were shown as evidence
Prosecutors argued these casings came from a single AR-15
Two witness testimonies recorded shortly after the shootout placed him at the party — one said he retrieved the gun from a backpack
Lottinger said the head wound that killed Carr was caused by an AR-15
He said he could tell because of the size of the hole caused by the bullet
and then others will be rounder and fatter
making them different in diameter,” Lottinger said
Lottinger testified for more than eight hours Wednesday
he stood in front of jurors and guided them through two surveillance camera videos gathered from a church parking lot
near a black Dodge Charger parked in front of Carr’s Cadillac
gun smoke that could be seen coming from the bush indicated where the shooter stood
Carr buckled over and glass exploded off his Cadillac’s front windshield
“You’re going to see the muzzle flash from this bush,” Lottinger said
but immediately following the puffs of smoke
muzzle flashes could be seen coming from both sides
and people could be seen fleeing and diving for cover
Defense Attorney Matt Ory challenged Lottinger’s work on the case
He asked if the Dodge Charger that fled the scene had ever been investigated or if the AR-15 had ever been found
Lottinger responded that if Ory had knowledge of where the Charger was
“You are the lead detective on a homicide case.”
A jury acquitted a Houma man after three-and-a-half years in jail
he was waiting for a ride to the Terrebonne Parish jail to collect his things
“I’m goin’ home to hug my 3-year-old daughter.”
Robinson was charged with second-degree murder in relation to the shooting death of Emmit Carr Jr. The charge carried a mandatory life sentence. Carr died June 26, 2021, at a "splash" party in the 2600 block of Isaac Street when gunfight broke out between two groups: one from Houma and the other from Thibodaux
This was the second time Robinson faced trial. The first ended Nov. 18 after jurors deliberated throughout the night and could not reach a verdict
Roughly five hours into deliberations on Friday
jurors again appeared to be at an impasse when the court received a written question
The judge and attorneys from both sides agreed to send the jurors back to continue deliberations
The announcement of the "not guilty" drew emotional responses from the families involved
The victim's mother, Niya Norris
Robinson's family members hugged one another
and Robinson’s attorneys patted him on the back
The weight of their decision was written on their faces
“This is not an easy process,” Judge Jason Dagate told them
“I can see on your faces the emotions you are going through.”
Dagate thanked the jurors for their service
The prosecution’s case relied on witness testimony. The shootout was captured on a nearby church’s security camera
The shooter that Prosecutor Daniel Smart identified as Robinson was never seen in the footage
Only puffs of gun smoke from the fatal shot could be seen
firing from behind a bush just before Carr crumpled
he said he was on the scene with the group from Thibodaux arrived
Retired Detective Robert Lottinger said the round that went through Carr’s head
and therefore not part of the evidence of the trial
Two witnesses who testified told the Houma Courier that they received phone calls threatening their lives
The video footage showed a black Dodge Charger fleeing the scene
some people do not want to be involved in the process,” Prosecutor for the Louisiana Attorney General's Office Leon Cannizzaro said
Cannizzaro said Lottinger spent tireless nights obtaining the evidence he did
“You should be very proud of that man as a detective in your community,” he said
Defense Attorney Matt Ory criticized Lottinger for his work on the case early in the trial
but in closing arguments he shifted his focus to witness statements
using photos of the scene to cast doubt on what witnesses could have seen
He then emphasized the weight of the juror's verdict
“Nobody wants to send an innocent man to prison for life.”
Fifty-five bullet casings were recovered from the crime scene
Ballistics tests on the casings found that they were fired from five different guns
and according to Lottinger they came from the AR-15
Two other large rifles were confiscated by police: an AK-47 and a M-15
Carr was struck three times: one smaller round went through his head
According to Jefferson Parish Forensic Pathologist Dr
the bullet that traveled through his head would have led to his death

A 75-year-old Houma woman died of stab wounds about 10 a.m
Joyce Williams had an altercation with her nephew

According to Chief of Police Travis Theriot
the Joyce Williams's death is not related to her son Joseph Paul Williams's death
"In no way whatsoever is this related to the homicide related to Joseph P
A mother’s face shivered with agony as she told jurors of her son and the last time she spoke to him before he died in a gang shootout during a “splash” party
“I want justice for my son… As sure as I’m hurting
the community is too,” Niya Norris said between tears
but his plans were cut short by three bullet wounds

Terrion Robinson faces the charge of second-degree murder in relation to the shooting death of Carr
with Judge Jason Dagate of Houma presiding
This is the second time Robinson stands trial after the first was declared a mistrial Nov
18 when jurors couldn’t come to a final verdict
prosecutors argued that the gunshot wound to Carr’s head led to his death
The size of the wound indicated it was from a .223 round
and witnesses said Robinson had an AR-15 at the party
an AR-15,” Prosecutor Daniel Smart said in opening statements Jan
“The fatal wound in this case was a quarter-of-an-inch round to the head.”
Smart told jurors to expect witnesses to not be cooperative
but that he had recordings of those witnesses’ past statements to the police
He then told jurors that the prosecution would provide them with the pieces
but jurors would have to assemble the puzzle
The defense attorneys argued that this shootout was in retaliation to a shooting in the Maydale community of Lafourche
They can’t put a gun in Terrion’s hands because he didn’t have one that day,” Defense Attorney Joe Zanetti said
“They failed to put together that puzzle.”
Wednesday with the lead detective’s testimony
which is expected to include video footage of the shootout
His previous testimony in the first trial lasted seven hours
The trial is being prosecuted by the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office after an altercation broke out between people involved in the previous trial in the courthouse that could lead to charges
According to Terrebonne Parish Assistant District Attorney Dennis Elfert
the Terrebonne Parish District Attorney’s Office handed the case over to the Attorney General’s Office to avoid a conflict of interest
Roughly 39,000 Terrebonne Parish residents are without water due to the icy storm that froze the parish
According to Terrebonne Parish Waterworks General Manager Michael Sobert
he made an emergency decision during the storm to shut off water to 13,000 customers Wednesday
He said each customer is estimated to be three people
The decision was made to triage the system and keep fresh water flowing to 37,000 other customers
and crews are currently in the process of reopening lines
it is unknown how long it will take to restore water
All customers along these roads are without water: everything south of Presque Isle
this is LA 56 and LA 24; Dulac's LA 57 is without water; LA 182 from the Shell Pump Station through Gibson; and LA 315 of Dularge
According to Terrebonne Parish Government's Communications Director Robbie Lee
there is no plan at this time to send residents water because the roads are clear and open
Sobert said the two water stations collectively generate 32 million gallons of water that is pumped throughout the parish: 24 million gallons in Schriever
"We could pump that and be out of water in a day," he said
While fire departments were not notified ahead of time that the water would be shut off
the fire departments expected water to be disrupted due to the storms
According to fire chiefs Tony Pellegrin and Shawn Bumm of Bourg and Grand Caillou Fire Departments
each department in the parish has stockpiles of water
and the ability to pull water from the bayous to extinguish any structure fires
They added that the State Fire Marshall's Office is aware of the situation and ready to send aid if needed
"Fire protection is still going to happen," Pellegrin said
"The people of our communities are protected."
