Bryson DeChambeau won both the individual and team titles at LIV Golf Korea
17 en route to a 66 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 19-under 197
The individual win was DeChambeau's third on the LIV circuit but his first on the season. He had to hold off Charles Howell III
"Charles and I had a great battle out there," said DeChambeau
Bryson DeChambeau had six birdies on the final nine holes -- including a 48-foot putt on No
17 -- to hold off Crushers GC teammate Charles Howell
and win LIV Golf Korea. Jason Butler/Getty ImagesDeChambeau hadn't had much luck in Sunday rounds lately
He held 36-hole leads at the past two LIV Golf events -- first in Miami
then in Mexico City -- and was atop the leaderboard at the Masters with 16 holes left
Howell played the first nine on Sunday at 4 under
reducing DeChambeau's lead to a single stroke at the turn
But after muddling through the front nine at even par
That was what he needed to thwart the charge from Howell
who made birdie on five consecutive holes from Nos
11 through 15 -- leaving them tied at 17 under with three holes to go
16 and finished with a birdie on the final hole
but DeChambeau's 48-foot birdie putt on No
"I feel like I've been playing some great golf
but I just haven't gotten the job done," DeChambeau said
Just glad I was able to step up to the plate and get it done."
Howell made his first appearance on the podium since he won LIV Gold Mayakoba in 2023
"I knew today would be a tough day to catch Bryson and even to try to beat him
"I definitely would've thought 9-under would have done it
Any time you shoot 9-under par in the last group and you still don't win
The Crushers also were aided by Paul Casey (67 on Sunday) and Anirban Lahiri
who recovered from a disastrous 79 on Saturday to shoot 72
The team was 20 under par on Sunday as a group and defeated Smash GC by nine shots
"Charles and Bryson won this for us," Casey said
Back on the individual side, Talor Gooch shot a 6-under 66 to finish 14 under and in third place
Thomas Pieters (68) and Patrick Reed (65) tied for fourth
Matthew Wolff was alone in sixth place after a round of 67
DeChambeau will join what is likely to be 13 other players from LIV Golf in the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club on May 15-18
DeChambeau was runner-up to Xander Schauffele in the PGA Championship last year
The Associated Press and Field Level Media contributed to this report
Those three numbers were taken in Minnesota
Cousins spent six years with the Vikings with two playoff appearances and one postseason win
That’s hardly enough to get his number set aside
The move should slam the door — if it wasn’t already closed — on the possibility of Cousins being traded to Minnesota
If the Vikings end up scrambling for a quarterback they way they were after Cousins suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the 2023 season
a return by Cousins wouldn’t be impossible
8 or Cousins would have to pick a new number
That’s what Cousins did when he went to Atlanta, since tight end Kyle Pitts has No. 8. (Because a change would have been very expensive
given the league’s rules regarding unsold jerseys
Pitts didn’t give it up for his new quarterback.)
that would be off the table if he somehow comes back to Minnesota
18 will likely be retired for receiver Justin Jefferson

A federal judge on Friday struck down President Trump's executive order targeting the prominent law firm of Perkins Coie
finding it unconstitutional and declaring it an attack on the foundational principles of the American legal system
District Judge Beryl Howell is the first to permanently block an executive order issued by Trump punishing a law firm for representing clients or causes that he dislikes
"No American President has ever before issued executive orders like the one at issue in this lawsuit targeting a prominent law firm with adverse actions to be executed by all Executive branch agencies," Howell wrote in her 102-page ruling
this action draws from a playbook as old as Shakespeare
who penned the phrase: 'The first thing we do
Perkins Coie was the first law firm targeted with a sweeping executive order that imposed potentially existential punitive measures on it
Trump's order suspended security clearances for the firm's employees
barred its attorneys from access to government buildings and officials
and ended government contracts with the firm
Trump has issued similar executive orders against several other prominent law firms that he views as political enemies. Three of those firms, in addition to Perkins Coie, have sued to challenge Trump's actions, and won court orders temporarily blocking enforcement of the orders
Perkins Coie's case is the first to be permanently blocked
Judge Howell framed the targeting of Perkins as an attack on the independence of the legal profession and the judicial system
"The importance of independent lawyers to ensuring the American judicial system's fair and impartial administration of justice has been recognized in this country since its founding era," she said in her ruling
"presents an unprecedented attack on these foundational principles."
"stigmatizes and penalizes a particular law firm and its employees," from partners through mailroom attendants because of the firm's representation of clients pursuing claims and taking positions that Trump doesn't like
"In a cringe-worthy twist on the theatrical phrase 'let's kill all the lawyers,'" she adds
Trump's executive order "takes the approach of 'let's kill the lawyers I don't like,' sending the clear message: lawyers must stick to the party line
"This ruling affirms core constitutional freedoms all Americans hold dear
and the right to select counsel without the fear of retribution," a spokesperson said in a statement
"We are pleased with this decision and are immensely grateful to those who spoke up in support of our positions
we remain guided by the same commitments that first compelled us to bring this challenge: to protect our firm
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment
While Perkins and three other firms have challenged Trump's orders
at least nine other firms have either cut deals with the president to get him to lift an order against them or to avoid the possibility of one
they've agreed to provide hundreds of millions of dollars combined in free legal work on causes they and the president support

some suggested that the Minnesota Vikings could eventually embrace a reunion with current Atlanta Falcons backup quarterback Kirk Cousins
However, Minnesota seemed to say plenty about its potential interest in Cousins when the club sent 2025 draft pick No
142 to the Seattle Seahawks for Sam Howell and the 172nd overall selection
Howell presumably could compete for the Vikings' QB2 job as 2024 first-round draft pick J.J
McCarthy prepares to be the team's Week 1 starter
On Monday, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated addressed why the Vikings essentially chose Howell over Cousins during the 2025 player-selection process
"The Minnesota Vikings were only going to consider a reunion at this point if the Falcons ate a big chunk of [Cousins'] salary — and
Minnesota traded for a much cheaper alternative in Sam Howell on the draft’s third day," Breer wrote
Specifically, Breer noted that Cousins is owed a guaranteed $27.5M in base salary for the 2025 season
$180M contract that included $100M guaranteed and a full no-trade clause to join the Falcons
Cousins' relationship with the Falcons changed after the club made signal-caller Michael Penix Jr
Penix replaced Cousins in the Atlanta starting lineup this past December
and the 24-year-old began springtime workouts as the Falcons' QB1
OutKick's Armando Salguero mentioned that Atlanta wants to find "a team willing to foot some of the guaranteed monies owed Cousins – which is damage the Falcons want to mitigate in the trade." However
Breer wrote that there is now no "logical destination" for Cousins following the draft
"It seems like the two possible exit doors for Cousins open if the Steelers don’t land Rodgers or another quarterback gets hurt somewhere," Breer added
it’d have to happen before the trade deadline
And there’s a chance that Cousins wouldn’t want to uproot his family — and could thus block a trade if he doesn’t like the destination."
It's unclear if the Steelers have a deadline in mind for when they could pivot from Rodgers to Cousins. For what it's worth, some noteworthy members of the football community are convinced Rodgers would have already signed with Pittsburgh if he wanted to play for the AFC North side later this year

HOWELL — The owners of Colasanti’s Market and Snook’s Butcher Shoppe in Highland confirmed a second location is coming to Howell in 2025
The Kassabs are awaiting final permit approval from Genoa Township
which will allow them to finalize the build-out
They've already received approval to start remodeling the structure
including knocking down the wall that previously separated Electric Ramen from the former market space
The Kassabs hope to open the nearly 10,000-square-foot retail location by Labor Day
They purchased the original location in Highland from the Colasantis in June 2023 with the intent of growing the brand and expanding products
“It’s a great community for us because we know how much (Livingston County) is growing and how much (residents) support local businesses,” said Alex
"Howell and Brighton make up one of the fastest growing communities in the state.”
Colasanti’s Express will include a Snook’s Butcher Shoppe
Jeff has 40 years of experience overseeing butcher shops and cutting meat
and will be in charge of that portion of the shop
“Everyone was pushing us to make sure that we opened the butcher shop
He plans to offer the same types of products available at the original location
from beef to specialty sausages and other custom cuts
The location will have about half the retail space
it will also include a deli with homemade soups and other hot specialty foods
“The only thing we won’t have (at the Howell store) that we do (in Highland) is produce,” Alex said
Jeff expects they'll need to hire as many as 30 employees before Colasanti’s Express opens
The location will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
with late hours available some summer nights if demand persists
The location is ideal for visibility in and around Howell
Many of the store's current customers already travel to the retail store in Highland from Livingston County
so he and his father expect there to be a loyal customer base from day one
The owners are committed to the idea that Colasanti’s Express will support the community through sponsorships and donations for events hosted by area charities
More: Will popular eatery Electric Ramen re-open in Howell? Here's what we know
Colasanti’s opened in Highland Township around 40 years ago
The original location stretches more than 37,000 square feet
Jeff confirmed “nothing is off the table." But their focus
remains on the original and secondary locations
“We want people to feel at home here,” Alex said
“You won’t get treated like just another number."

the Vikings' quarterback situation seems pretty cut-and-dry at this point
who has recovered from last August's meniscus injury
the former Commanders starter and Seahawks backup Minnesota acquired in a trade during last weekend's draft
Brett Rypien and Max Brosmer will compete for the QB3 job
However, one anonymous NFL executive doesn't exactly see it that way. In a recent story done by Mike Sando at The Athletic (subscription required)
the exec — who "wasn't high on McCarthy" coming out of Michigan — had this wild take on the Vikings' QB room in 2025:
and Howell is going to walk in there and become the next Sam Darnold."
Howell showed some arm talent during his 2023 season as Washington's starter
but any comparisons to Darnold — outside of their shared first name — don't hold up
Darnold is three inches taller and was the third overall pick in his draft class
Howell was a fifth-rounder who led the NFL in interceptions thrown and sacks taken in '23
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has built a reputation as a quarterback whisperer
but his primary project this year is McCarthy
“Stop," said another executive in Sando's story
and the coach (Kevin O’Connell) will make sure he is good."
but there doesn't seem to be any elevated risk of future knee issues for McCarthy after last year's meniscus tear
it's very difficult to imagine Howell performing anywhere near the borderline elite level Darnold played at in 2024
McCarthy is the Vikings' starter. He's ready for the moment, and his teammates believe in him

US district judge Beryl Howell says order violates first
fifth and sixth amendments and permanently blocks it
A federal judge on Friday permanently struck down Donald Trump’s executive order that targeted the firm Perkins Coie, which once worked with his 2016 presidential election rival Hillary Clinton, after declaring in an extraordinary ruling that the order was unconstitutional and unlawful.
The decision from the US district judge Beryl Howell, which criticized virtually every aspect of the order in a 102-page opinion, marks a major victory for Perkins Coie and could be used as a model by other judges weighing cases brought by other law firms in similar orders.
“No American president has ever before issued executive orders like the one at issue,” she wrote, adding: “In purpose and effect, this action draws from a playbook as old as Shakespeare, who penned the phrase: ‘The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.’”
Read moreHowell found in particular that the executive order violated the first, fifth and sixth amendments and permanently barred its implementation. She also raised alarm at other law firms that opted to strike deals with the Trump administration rather than face the possibility of being targeted themselves
Perkins Coie was the first law firm to end up in the crosshairs of Trump’s executive orders aimed at law firms that terminated any government contracts and barred federal employees from engaging with its attorneys or allowing them access to federal buildings
The administration said at the time that Perkins Coie was a national security risk principally because it had hired Fusions GPS on behalf of the Clinton presidential campaign in 2016
which produced the “dossier” that pushed discredited claims about Trump’s connections to Russia
Howell rejected that contention outright in her decision
citing Trump’s own attacks against Perkins Coie and the stunning breadth of everyone from the attorneys to the assistants at the firm facing restrictions as evidence that the executive order was retaliatory
The provision in the executive order that barred its lawyers from entering federal government buildings and engaging with government employees in particular was not speculative
in part because the government had cancelled meetings within days of it being issued
The attempt by the administration to argue that it was limited to only when such access would threaten national security or in the national interest of the US was unconvincing
since the executive order itself said working with Perkins Coie was not in the national interest
“That is unconstitutional retaliation and viewpoint discrimination
Howell also rebuked Trump over the requirement in the executive order for any private companies that had government contracts to disclose whether they had ever worked with Perkins Coie
regardless of whether it was related to their government contract work
was at odds with the first amendment protection to freely use any lawyer
since the need to disclose any possible work with Perkins Coie could mean firms that contracted with the government would be dissuaded from using them at all
since it required disclosure “whether the contract is for crucial classified military equipment costing millions of dollars per item delivered or for paper clips costing pennies
and no matter whether the disclosure of association with plaintiff had anything to do with a government contract”
The Trump administration is almost certain to appeal to the US court of appeals for the DC circuit. The ruling comes weeks after Howell previously issued a temporary restraining order that blocked Trump’s order from taking effect after a hearing last month in federal district court in Washington.
Read moreThat temporary injunction followed an emergency lawsuit filed by Perkins Coie on the advice of Williams & Connolly
another elite firm in the nation’s capital known for taking cases against government overreach
Perkins Coie had initially reached out to the firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, which has previously represented people in Trump’s orbit, including Elon Musk, the Trump Organization itself, and the New York mayor, Eric Adams, whose corruption charges were dropped by the justice department last month.
But Quinn Emanuel declined to take Perkins Coie as a client, as its top partners decided not to become involved in a politically sensitive issue that could make themselves a target by association just as they have been on the rise as a power center in Washington DC.
While other law firms discussed whether to file amicus briefs or declarations supporting Perkins Coie, the firm was ultimately taken on by Williams & Connolly. They advised Perkins Coie to ask for an emergency hearing and temporary restraining order, both of which Howell granted.

Rookie numbers tend to make headlines for the team's annual jersey number reveal
but some veterans caught the attention this year
Former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Isaiah Rodgers (No. 2) and ex-Arizona Cardinals receiver Rondale Moore (No
4) claimed coveted single-digit numbers.
However, Sam Howell seems to have stolen the show with a number that turned heads
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Howell was traded to the Minnesota Vikings on April 26
According to a team release, Howell will wear No. 8 for the Vikings -- longtime Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins' number
Fans took to social media with widespread reactions following the news
"The 'we should trade for Kirk' crowd just fell to their knees," one fan wrote, referring to the calls for the team to trade for Cousins, currently with the Atlanta Falcons
amid concerns about the backup quarterback spot in Minnesota
Howell quelled those concerns when the Vikings acquired him in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks during Day 3 of the draft
And while Howell is far from a finished product at just 24 years old, fans sarcastically poked fun at Cousins after he failed to live up to the steep expectations of a Super Bowl bid when he first arrived in 2018
"Cousins didn’t do ANYTHING to have his jersey retired so why not let a backup wear it!!" one fan wrote
"Best Vikings quarterback to wear8️⃣," another fan wrote in reaction to the Howell news
"I can confidently say there's never been a better QB here to wear 8," another fan echoed
While Howell is in the final year of his rookie deal and has yet to prove to be a capable starting quarterback in the league
that didn't stop one fan's plea:
"Chat will this be the best Viking to ever wear 8?"

McCarthy (22 years old) and former undrafted free agent Brett Rypien (28)
Howell is listed at 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds
Here's five things to know about the new Vikings passer:
View photos of Vikings new QB Sam Howell who was acquired via trade with the Seahawks
Howell was drafted to Washington with the 144th pick in the fifth round in 2022 and won his only start as a rookie
Howell started 17 games and completed 388 of 612 passes for 3,946 yards
Howell's finest game as a pro to date occurred in Week 8 of the 2021 campaign against Philadelphia
in which he threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns at a 75-percent clip (39-for-52) in a 38-31 defeat
Howell was traded by the Commanders to Seattle
along with a fourth-rounder and sixth-rounder in the 2024 Draft
in exchange for 2024 third-round and 2024 fifth-round choices
Howell played in two games for the Seahawks
going 5-for-14 with a pick against Green Bay in Week 15
Howell holds a number of North Carolina Tar Heels records
including career passing yards (10,283) and touchdowns (92)
the single-season mark for passing TDs (38) and single-game tallies for yards (550) and TDs (6)
eclipsed Howell in single-season passing yardage
Howell had 5-plus passing touchdowns three times as a Tar Heel
happening once in each of his three seasons
during conference games against Virginia Tech (2019)
Howell attended and starred at Sun Valley High School in Monroe
totaling 13,415 passing yards and 145 touchdowns through the air
in addition to 3,621 yards and 60 TDs on the ground
His play resulted in him being ranked the No
Originally committed to Florida State University
Howell flipped to North Carolina after the hiring of Mack Brown as Tar Heels coach
Howell is the only Sun Valley alum to appear in the NFL
After pacing the ACC in touchdown passes with 38 and 30 his first two seasons at North Carolina
Howell was touted as a potential high draft pick
even acquiring some early consideration as a first-rounder
NFL Media's Lance Zierlein projected Howell as a second-round choice and noted he "plays with admirable confidence despite inconsistencies in important areas as a passer."
hindering his accuracy on drive throws but has adequate arm strength and can expedite off-platform throws," Zierlein said
"The 2021 tape was bumpy but his makeup is really good and improvement is likely with better pieces around him
"Howell isn't wired for or suited to a ball-control passing attack and might need a vertical passing scheme capable of creating explosive plays in order to succeed," Zierlein added
he shared the backfield with Vikings 2022 fifth-round pick Ty Chandler
Chandler romped for 1,092 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in 13 contests
and Howell posted a 24:9 touchdown-to-interception ratio over 12 games as the Tar Heels went 6-7
Howell wound up with more rushing attempts (183 to Chandler's 182) and scooted for 828 yards despite his previous season-best of 146 yards
Also, on Howell's Instagram account
he posted a photo in 2019 posing after a game with former North Carolina State linebacker Drake Thomas
who is the younger brother of Vikings wide receiver Thayer Thomas

but the team hasn’t done much to contribute to the conversation
The Vikings seem comfortable moving forward with J.J
but everyone outside of the building seemingly wants the team to go after a veteran quarterback like Aaron Rodgers
The Minnesota Vikings quarterback room has been one of the most discussed position groups in all of the NFL this offseason
and Sam Howell would start and have a year similar to the one Darnold had last season
The Seattle Seahawks signed Darnold and Drew Lock this offseason
as the Vikings needed to rebuild their QB depth
Howell is expected to be QB2 behind McCarthy
this executive is predicting that Howell will eventually be QB1 and have a career resurgence
this is a ridiculous prediction for McCarthy
It’s one thing to have questions about McCarthy’s play
All McCarthy has been doing is working to be healthy enough and good enough to start for the Vikings this season
he’s had to deal with people trying to replace him with quarterbacks whose career are coming to an end
and now an NFL executive predicting an injury for him
so everyone else should just wait and see what he has to offer

HOWELL — Years of dedication and experience in their chosen sports were reflected when 27 seniors were featured in Howell High School’s annual college signing ceremony Thursday
She received her scholarship to Michigan State University in rowing
Gregory’s story is fairly common in collegiate rowing
which takes athletes from other sports and molds them into competitive rowers
a bench player for the 2000 and 2001 Flint Powers Catholic state championship basketball teams who started rowing at Michigan before competing in three Summer Olympics
Gregory’s primary sport growing up was gymnastics
She has been a sprinter and jumper on Howell’s track and field team the last two years
Rowing wasn’t on her radar until she saw something on social media during January of her junior year
The MSU rowing team was holding a webinar for aspiring rowers to give them insight into the program
She was eventually offered a spot on the team
“I wasn’t really thinking about going for athletics,” she said
“Kids don’t get recruited out of high school gymnastics for college gymnastics
I started exploring track and field options
I was really just excited to try something new
Being a life-long gymnast turned out to be a plus for Gregory
“It takes discipline to succeed in gymnastics,” said Gregory
Many of the incoming freshmen joining Gregory are in the same boat
Only a handful of Michigan high schools have rowing teams
“A lot of girls in my recruiting class have never done it before,” Gregory said
“It’s exciting to know I’m not going to be alone in that.”

Another Howell athlete taking an unconventional path after high school is offensive lineman Tanner Baidel
Baidel will compete next year for LEAD Prep Academy in Brighton
a transitionary program at the Legacy Center for players hoping to boost their college stock after high school
The program has partnered with Washtenaw Community College
allowing players to take up to nine credit hours so they begin working toward a degree without burning a year of eligibility
“I was trying to put a lot of film out there to coaches,” said Baidel
a first-team all-Livingston County selection
Legacy contacted me and I did some research into Legacy
They had 115 D1 commits in four years and the roster is about 40
I’ll have a lot better likelihood of playing where I want to be
Baidel is one of five players from Howell’s KLAA and district championship football team that were part of Thursday’s ceremony
Grant Stewart (Indiana Wesleyan) and Shawn Turpin (Northwood)
Bobby Kanka had a signing ceremony on early national signing day in December and enrolled at the University of Michigan in January
Kicker Luis Maldonado is going to Schoolcraft College to play soccer
each athlete had a moment for photos with coaches
That meant the baseball team had to stand by to make frequent trips to the table at which photos were taken
the baseball team had the most athletes advancing to the next level of any Howell squad
Baseball players who are moving on to college are Neko Hall (Madonna), Nick Hoorn (Northwood), Caleb Park (Spring Arbor), Gavin Pejakovich (Kalamazoo College), Josh Soneral (Alma), James Steakley (Defiance) and JT Thomas (Saginaw Valley)
especially since I’ve grown up with most of them since I was 7
“It’s great to see all the success they’ve had and just over the years having fun with your buddies.”
The boys golf and lacrosse teams each had three athletes take part in the ceremony
It was a particularly impressive number for the golf team
which can use only six players for most varsity events and five in the postseason
Jacob Dault will play golf for Cleary University
Lucas Downing for Kalamazoo College and Zach Spencer for Ferris State
“Three and hopefully a few more,” Spencer said
It’s fun working with guys who want to move on and play hard and compete.”
Lacrosse players who will play in college are Caleb Edwards (Trine)
Nolan O’Dea (Alma) and Gage Overton (Lawrence Tech)
Other Howell athletes who signed with colleges are Addison Caldwell (Oakland University
Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah addressed the media after the Vikings made their final pick in the 2025 NFL Draft
— Go ahead and put an asterisk next to the Vikings' 5-man* draft class
Some maneuvering Friday and Saturday enabled Minnesota to take five players in total
expanding on the four selections the team held when the clock started Thursday night
The Vikings narrowly missed breaking the franchise record for fewest picks in a draft
instead tying with the five selections in 2008 and in 2009
a sixth player was picked up by the Vikings
to Seattle for quarterback Sam Howell and the 172nd choice
Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell joined NFL Network's Rich Eisen on the third day of the 2025 NFL Draft to discuss the team's picks and give an update on the quarterbacks room after trading for Howell
"We still think that there's a lot in Sam's game to develop but also see where he can take it within our system
within our quarterback development plan here in Minnesota," O'Connell said
"[We] feel really good about Josh McCown [coaching] that quarterbacks room
and the things we've acquired – whether [it's] up front; the skill guys we do have that we feel so great about
and then just our system going into Year 4
the evolution of that becoming as quarterback friendly as we can make it
while also challenging defenses and trying to do the things that it takes to win football games."
Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell joined NFL Network to discuss the team's 2025 NFL Draft picks
Howell was the sixth of nine drafted quarterbacks in 2022 and originally suited up for Washington
he's second with 22 career passing touchdowns
only trailing San Francisco's Brock Purdy – "Mr
Irrelevant" that year – who is responsible for 64 in twice as many games played
The quarterbacks selected ahead of Howell in the 2022 cycle were Cleveland's Kenny Pickett (20th by Pittsburgh)
free agent Desmond Ridder (74th by Atlanta)
Green Bay's Malik Willis (86th by Tennessee)
free agent Matt Corral (94th by Carolina) and Kansas City's Bailey Zappe (137th by New England)
Howell appeared in relief in two games and recorded minimal statistics
He'll be inserted into a Vikings QBs room that features 2024 10th overall pick J.J
McCarthy and 28-year-old former undrafted free agent Brett Rypien
who was integral to the scout team a year ago
who was hired by the Vikings just months before the 2022 NFL Draft
said Howell was a player Minnesota did its homework on when he was coming out of North Carolina
Howell was a three-year college starter with all types of gaudy numbers and conference recognition going for him
including a handful of single-season and career Tar Heels passing records and inclusion on All-ACC teams
Watch highlights of new Vikings quarterback Sam Howell who was acquired through a trade with the Seattle Seahawks
he's a 24-year-old with three seasons of NFL experience
including one in which he started 17 games for the Commanders and passed for just short of 4,000 yards at a 63.4-percent clip
Howell led Washington to a 4-13 mark and grew
through a league-worst 65 sacks and as many interceptions as touchdowns (21)
There were hard lessons – but there were also flashes
Howell went 39-for-52 with 397 passing yards and a 4:1 touchdown-to-pick ratio against Philadelphia in Week 8 that season
Howell rushed for 30 or more yards in seven contests and completed at least 65% of his throws eight times
His woes were underpinned by a ton of responsibility
the Commanders struggled in the run game – their leading rusher gained 733 yards
Their offensive line started nine different players
and their defense surrendered 30.5 points per game (more than anyone else)
Howell was dealt to Seattle and backed up Geno Smith in 2024
His moving again could wind up being a beneficial reset for his career
Following Minnesota's final selection at 202 in Round 6
General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah recapped how the Vikings accomplished manipulating the board to end up with Howell
and were familiar with dating to Adofo-Mensah's first draft at the helm
"[He's] somebody that a lot of people in this building had appreciation for when the opportunity struck," Adofo-Mensah said
mentioning there's a mutual excitement for the continuation of Howell's QB journey
Adofo-Mensah echoed O'Connell's comments that Minnesota did its "work" on Howell ahead of the draft that year
but determined it wasn't the right time to "make such an investment" because of the nuances in selecting a quarterback versus maybe other positions; beyond the evaluation of statistics and film
there's a high level of commitment – Adofo-Mensah used the word "marriage" — that's demanded
Vikings Entertainment Network's Tatum Everett recaps what the Vikings and GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah did in the 2025 NFL Draft and discusses the trade for QB Sam Howell
that sort of courtship," Adofo-Mensah said
"We say a lot that organizations fail quarterbacks long before quarterbacks fail organizations
and all those other things we talked about
he was high up on our board," Adofo-Mensah added
The most important marriage in Minnesota right now is of course the one to McCarthy
who's still top of mind for O'Connell and everyone else as the Vikings gently shift their focus to future offseason activities
"He's really been in the building the whole offseason completing his rehab," O'Connell told Eisen
And I know he was very excited to get all his teammates back this week
And we're hitting the ground running this spring
"As the head coach and play caller of this team," he continued
"I feel really good about the roster we have right now."
View photos of the undrafted free agents the Vikings have agreed to terms with following the 2025 NFL Draft
Auburn (International Player Pathway Program)
the Vikings announced they agreed to terms Saturday with undrafted free agent and local prospect Max Brosmer
who excelled for the Minnesota Golden Gophers in 2024
completing a single-season school record 268 passes after starring for five years at New Hampshire
As part of his post-draft recap (and prior to adding Brosmer)
Adofo-Mensah elaborated on the thinking behind trading for Howell
and why his specific "quarterback portfolio" was viewed as complementary to what the Vikings have in-house
they weighed different scenarios and the ways Howell could impact the team
whether it's coming off the bench in a game
and how he fits in relation to the group of players around him
like configuring a disbursement of reps amongst quarterbacks
because he's trying to establish himself after so many on-field opportunities were postponed by a knee injury last August
Plenty of practice reps will be directed toward him
so Howell's prior experience will be helpful
"The dedication of reps to a developing player like J.J
is not necessarily going to lend itself to a ton of reps elsewhere," said Adofo-Mensah
"Those are [some of my most fun] conversations [with O'Connell] because there's no right or wrong answer
We're just malleable and open-minded in the way we talk about it
Sam was just somebody that really fit a lot of those needs."

142 overall pick (via a trade with the Minnesota Vikings)

playSam Howell traded to the Vikings (0:35)Adam Schefter reports that Sam Howell has been traded to the Vikings for a pick swap
The Seattle Seahawks have traded quarterback Sam Howell to the Vikings
142 in the fifth round to the Seahawks in exchange for Howell and pick No
Howell now becomes the likely backup to quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The Vikings also have quarterback Brett Rypien under contract
General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah did not rule out the Vikings acquiring another quarterback but said
we'd be fired up about the guys in that room."
Adofo-Mensah added that the team heavily researched Howell before the 2022 draft, three months after he and coach Kevin O'Connell had been hired. Ultimately, Howell was selected in the fifth round by the Washington Commanders
"We didn't think in that first year together when Kevin and I got together
that was the right time in our journey to make such an investment," Adofo-Mensah said
We weren't in the right place to do that type of thing
a pure talent and all those other things we talk about
he was high up on our board but just didn't think it was the right time and place
that maybe a person you're dating is not the right time and place
but then later on in life it happens at a better time."
Seahawks general manager John Schneider said Saturday that conversations with the Vikings about a potential Howell trade began at the league meetings that wrapped up earlier this month. The Seahawks had met with Drew Lock during their trip to South Florida and were considering bringing him back
They signed him two weeks later as the presumed No. 2 quarterback behind Sam Darnold
A Howell trade then seemed inevitable once Seattle drafted Jalen Milroe in the third round Friday night. With former Viking Jaren Hall also in the mix
taking Milroe with the 92nd overall pick gave the Seahawks five quarterbacks
"And then we liked the quarterbacks in the draft and we thought there was a chance that might happen," Schneider said
"There were several teams that were interested and Minnesota was the team that ended up pulling the trigger."
Vikings senior vice president of player personnel Ryan Grigson noted that Howell started all 17 games for the Commanders in 2023 and is only 24 years old
"It's an opportunity that is not usually that easy to come by when you have that type of youth and that type of experience," Grigson said
McCarthy opened the Vikings' offseason program last week with no limitations from the torn right meniscus he suffered during the 2024 preseason that caused him to miss his entire rookie year
The Vikings have stopped short of naming McCarthy their starter for 2025
but Adofo-Mensah said last month that it's "the outcome we want" and "the outcome we're headed towards."
in part on the assumption that McCarthy will almost certainly be the Vikings' starter
That led the Vikings to spend several days in serious internal discussions about the possibility of signing free agent Aaron Rodgers
who had expressed interest during a phone call with O'Connell
the Vikings decided to put those talks on hold and allow McCarthy to maximize the team's reps during offseason practices
O'Connell said last week that the team had a "pretty detailed plan" for adding depth behind and around McCarthy and Rypien and mentioned the possibility of a trade
Howell was a relatively inexpensive acquisition
as the pick swap simply required the Vikings to move down 30 spots in the fifth round
Drafting Milroe and trading Howell continues the remake of the Seahawks' quarterback room. They traded starter Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders in March before signing Darnold as his replacement
$100.5 million contract on the heels of his Pro Bowl season with the Vikings
bringing back Smith's former backup to fill the same role behind Darnold
Seattle acquired Howell in a March 2024 trade with the Commanders
giving up third- and fifth-round selections for the quarterback and picks in the fourth and sixth rounds
The Seahawks beat out three other teams that were also negotiating with the Commanders
Howell struggled badly in a relief appearance for Smith in December. After Smith hurt his knee midway through the third quarter of a 30-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers
Howell completed five of 14 attempts for 24 yards and an interception
A fifth-round pick by Washington in 2022, Howell threw for 21 touchdowns and a league-high 21 interceptions in 2023. He also led the NFL with 612 attempts, completing 63.4% of them while throwing for 3,946 yards. The Commanders went 4-13, traded Howell to Seattle and drafted Jayden Daniels second overall
HOWELL — Children in Howell have a new home to play ball
A new complex featuring youth baseball and softball fields is now complete and ready to kick off the spring season this weekend
The Howell Area Junior Baseball Association will host its opening day festivities starting at 9 a.m

There are more than 500 players signed up this spring season
Ingamells told The Daily that’s around a 10% increase from last year
He said HAJBA’s goal is to get kids outside
“Baseball teaches you a lot of things that some sports don’t,” Ingamells said
so I’m going to be a little bit more positive towards the game of baseball
It teaches you about thinking on your feet and being put in a hard spot
It teaches you about handling adversity.”
The former community baseball complex at Northwest Elementary School was removed as part of the replacement of the school
HPS and HAJBA worked together on the new complex

ANN ARBOR — Before they were national championship gymnastics teammates at the University of Michigan
Kyle Walchuk of Howell and Landen Blixt of Fowlerville were two young boys dealing with foot injuries while training in the same gym
Walchuk had recently moved to Michigan when he joined Infinity Gymnastics Academy in Brighton where Blixt was already a budding star
injured his foot during his second practice
they worked on their conditioning together while their injuries healed
but looking back it was the best thing that could have happened because it gave us the opportunity to get to know each other,” Walchuk said
That was part of the draw to even come to Michigan in the first place.”
Blixt arrived at Michigan after graduating from Fowlerville in 2022
Walchuk became a Wolverine after graduating from Howell the following year
They joined a program that had been close to winning national championships for a few years before breaking through to win the NCAA title April 19 in its home arena at the Crisler Center
Neither gymnast competed in the national meet
Blixt suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the first meet of the season
while Walchuk is a pommel horse specialist on a team that is deep in that event
Blixt learned how to add value to the team
by making suggestions to his teammates to improve their routines and offering encouragement
His biggest regret the previous year was not speaking up when he saw something a teammate could improve
“This year only being able to help the team cheering wise in the gym
“I was really happy I got to fill that regret this year
Being surrounded by teammates with such high aspirations helped Blixt cope with his injury
“The team helped me a lot because my role changed but the goal remained the same,” he said
If I was in club gymnastics before college
it literally would have felt like my world was collapsing
Because I have these guys and the goal hadn’t finished of winning a national championship
MEMORY LANE: Uber-focused Fowlerville gymnast with Olympic dreams 'parents himself'
Walchuk was in Michigan’s lineup for six of its 14 events
His contribution was pushing the other pommel horse specialists throughout the season because
“The pushing for those couple of spots gets pretty intense,” Walchuk said
just that drive that we’re all pushing each other
we all want to win a national championship and we want to see the team succeed
We push to compete with other pommel horse specialists
Winning the national championship became an all-consuming focus for the Wolverines after back-to-back runner-up finishes that were preceded by two straight third-place showings
we learned there was way more to give,” Blixt said
“None of us knew what it took to win a national championship
It was cool just to see all the work we’ve put in compared to the other years.”
every team would win national championships
going through with such high expectations,” Walchuk said
It was certainly one of the harder seasons I’ve seen.”
Because Blixt’s injury happened so early in the season
he gets an extra year of eligibility after his senior season next winter
That will give him an extra season to compete in a program that produced three Olympians and an Olympic alternate last summer as he works toward his goal of qualifying for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles
“The Olympics have been my biggest goal since I was little,” he said
“It’s something you want to have come true
It’s like a dream and you don’t know how to get there
You just have to keep doing the right things.”
Walchuk said his studies as a material science and engineering major at Michigan would make it difficult to put in the extra training needed to pursue an Olympic goal
He was studying quantum theory when reached for his interview

“We have two (U.S.) Olympians in the gym,” Walchuk said
“I’ve seen the commitment it takes physically
the time it takes to recover and do all the training
I don’t know if it’s realistic to have all the goals I have outside of the gym along with Olympic goals.”
the one event that would give him the best shot at the Olympics
Walchuk hopes to become stronger in multiple events to help the team over his final two years

SEATTLE -- The Seahawks are open to trading Sam Howell and have received inquiries from teams interested in acquiring their backup quarterback
giving Seattle a potential surplus at the position
Seattle acquired Howell in a trade last March with the Washington Commanders
giving up third- and fifth-round selections in exchange for Howell and picks in the fourth and sixth rounds
The Seahawks beat out three other teams who were also negotiating with Washington
Howell, 24, was unremarkable over the offseason and struggled badly in a relief appearance of Smith in December. After Smith hurt his knee midway through the third quarter of a 30-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers
Howell completed only 5 of 14 attempts for 24 yards and an interception
Howell, a fifth-round pick by Washington in 2022, started all 17 games for the Commanders in 2023, throwing for 21 touchdowns and a league-high 21 interceptions. He also led the NFL with 612 attempts, completing 63.4% of them while throwing for 3,946 yards. The Commanders went 4-13, traded Howell to Seattle and drafted Jayden Daniels second overall
"Sam was put in a very hard spot last year," Schneider told the radio station

Schneider previously described Howell's mobility as being a good fit for Kubiak's offense

We know all three of those guys can move."
Schneider also said the Lock addition "doesn't preclude us from doing anything in the draft." Lock's contract is for two years and $5 million

"You know what is going to happen?" that executive told Sando. "J.J. is going to get banged up, and Howell is going to walk in there and become the next Sam Darnold."
"Stop," another executive told Sando

3 overall pick of the New York Jets in 2018 but struggled mightily as the starter both in the Big Apple and with the Carolina Panthers
He spent a season as the backup for the San Francisco 49ers before having a career year for the Vikings in 2024
35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while leading the team to a 14-3 record and postseason berth
Howell wasn't as highly regarded coming out of college
with the Washington Commanders drafting him in the fifth round of the 2022 draft
He served as the team's starter in 2023
21 touchdowns and a league-worst 21 interceptions
where he spent a season as Geno Smith's backup
Darnold's career year and redemption story was a major surprise
Howell replicating that level of success—if he even sees the field at all—would be downright shocking
Judge Howell goes all Shakespearean in her order
Judge Beryl Howell was assigned the case and barred the enforcement of key provisions of the EO on the same day as the temporary restraining order hearing
enjoining the enforcement of any aspect of the EO
And she began her 102-page order (available below) on a poetic note
No American President has ever before issued executive orders like the one at issue in this lawsuit targeting a prominent law firm with adverse actions to be executed by all Executive branch agencies but
who penned the phrase: “The first thing we do
let’s kill all the lawyers.” WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
he promptly incorporates this tactic as part of his plan to assume power
leading in the same scene to the rebel leader demanding “[a]way with him,” referring to an educated clerk
who “can make obligations and write court hand,” id
Eliminating lawyers as the guardians of the rule of law removes a major impediment to the path to more power
Nat’l Ass’n of Radiation Survivors
dissenting) (explaining the import of the same Shakespearean statement to be “that disposing of lawyers is a step in the direction of a totalitarian form of government”)
It’s a helluva opening graph, and the opinion is being called a “tour de force” as she continues the Shakespearean analogy later: “In a cringe-worthy twist on the theatrical phrase ‘Let’s kill all the lawyers,’ EO 14230 takes the approach of ‘Let’s kill the lawyers I don’t like,’ sending the clear message: lawyers must stick to the party line

Seattle based law firm Perkins Coie said it was "immensely grateful" for the support it received after a federal judge struck down an executive order from President Trump targeting the company on Friday
Newsweek contacted Perkins Coie and the Department of Justice for comment on Saturday via email and online inquiry form respectively
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has introduced a number of executive orders targeting law firms that have either represented his political rivals
or been involved in investigations against him
This has sparked a series of legal actions, the companies arguing the orders are an unconstitutional restraint on free expression. However a number of other law firms reached deals with the administration to avoid being targeted and have committed a combined total of just under $1 billion in free legal work for causes the president supports
District Judge Beryl Howell ruled that Trump's executive order targeting Perkins Coie
violated constitutionally enshrined protections for free speech and due process and was thus unlawful
Trump's executive order had revoked federal clearance for Perkins Coie employees and instructed federal agencies to cancel contracts with the company
However Howell had already blocked its implementation with a temporary restraining order before her judgment this week
In his executive order Trump said Perkins Cole was being targeted over its work for the 2016 Hillary Clinton presidential campaign and its diversity hiring practices
The order said: "The dishonest and dangerous activity of the law firm Perkins Coie LLP ('Perkins Coie') has affected this country for decades. Notably, in 2016 while representing failed Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton
which then manufactured a false 'dossier' designed to steal an election …
"Perkins Coie racially discriminates against its own attorneys and staff
and against applicants … Perkins Coie publicly announced percentage quotas in 2019 for hiring and promotion on the basis of race and other categories prohibited by civil rights laws."
Susman Godfrey and Jenner & Block have also sued the administration in response to executive orders targeting their activities
In all three cases judges have imposed temporary blocks on the orders while the cases are deliberated
In a statement posted on X Perkins Coie said: "Today
the Court permanently blocked the unlawful Executive Order targeting our firm
This ruling affirms core constitutional freedoms all Americans hold dear
and the right to select counsel without the fear of retribution
The Justice Department has the option of appealing Howell's ruling to the U.S
Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit
It is not yet known whether they intend to make such a move
