Hughson’s Robert McDaniel got a last-minute invite to the Elite 11 and made the most of his opportunity
Robert McDaniel’s senior season at Hughson High has benefitted from all he learned last summer at the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp
He’s hoping to help lead the Huskies to another CIF Sac-Joaquin Section title and perhaps a CIF state title before he embarks on his college career at the University of Arizona
He and unbeaten team have a huge game Friday vs unbeaten Sonora

The best quarterback in the 117-year history of Hughson High School was told to put his summer workout on hold
Someone from “Elite 11” was trying to reach him
He thought his tryout in Las Vegas for Elite 11
merely the nation’s most prestigious three-day camp for prep quarterbacks
“There’s a 32-page playbook waiting for you.”
he was practicing with his Hughson teammates
he was being mentored by quarterbacks Cade Klubnik (Clemson) and Dillon Gabriel (Oregon) and gathering insights from Pete Carroll (a longtime friend of Elite 11 founder Andy Bark)
“I was picking their brains on everything,” McDaniel said
I really learned how to be a better teammate…and reaching a happy medium between being a good teammate and not being the guy no one wants to be around.”
The Friday Night Lights shine bright in this corner of the world
and the Trans-Valley League – Hughson’s affiliate – is arguably California’s toughest small-schools league
five TVL schools have won CIF state championships
tossed the ball around his backyard during his childhood
His parents held him out of tackle football until eighth grade
Since he was promoted to the varsity by coach Shaun King for the final two games of his freshman year
The numbers midway through his senior year glow like The Strip on New Years Eve: 6,107 passing yards and 78 touchdowns against only 15 interceptions
Hughson has enjoyed its share of success over the years
but the McDaniel Era laps all previous runs
the Huskies have captured two Sac-Joaquin Section titles and – when he was sophomore – the CIF 5-AA state title
Hughson reached the Northern California final
possesses the kind of talent that has made him a commit to Arizona
He spins the ball with authority both in the pocket and rolling out
“He goes through his progressions like you don’t often see at the high school level,” King praised
It was not by coincidence that Arizona coach Brent Brennan paid a visit during Hughson’s game recently against Ripon
McDaniel has taken summer school classes online so he can graduate early and be in Tucson next spring (he’ll still walk with his class in May)
McDaniel is the first Power 5 QB recruit from the TVL since Hilmar’s Nate Costa (Oregon) two decades ago
The Hughson star at first committed to Cal until college football leadership rotated like a huge out-of-control wheel
The retirement of Alabama icon Nick Saban sparked the change
Kalen DeBoer switched from Washington to Alabama
Jedd Fisch relocated from Arizona to Washington and Brennan left San Jose State for the U of A
McDaniel developed relationships with Brennan and his offensive coordinator Dino Babers
Cal and others motored to Hughson last summer for white-board sessions with King and McDaniel
Just in case McDaniel rethought his destination
is virtually a finished high school product
he’s tossed 16 touchdown passes and only one interception
His primary targets are first rate: Max Mankins
a senior from nearby Waterford who enrolled at Hughson as a freshman; and junior Bryce McDaniel
Hughson trailed Ripon Christian 21-14 midway through the fourth quarter when McDaniel – on a 4th-and-13 —connected with Sumter for a 43-yard tying touchdown
McDaniel found McDaniel for the dramatic 23-yard game-winner
McDaniel and Sumter made their first impression on Ripon Christian
sustained a drive that produced the win and a berth in the state finals (Hughson defeated Muir 9-6 for the championship)
“He (McDaniel) can fit the ball catchable for me and not catchable for the defense,” Sumter said
They both hoped it would be this way – Robert throwing it and Bryce catching it
“Being able to know exactly where he is during each of his route is so good,” Robert said
“We just kind of know what the other is going to do.”
Sumter caught a 42-yard TD pass from McDaniel with 2:42 left in the game to give the Huskies a 21-17 win over Escalon
which has been the perennial powerhouse in the TVL
McDaniel also had 190 yards passing in the game
In the most recent Cal-Hi Sports small school rankings
McDaniel sometimes has felt overwhelmed over the crush of collegiate coaches and media as his cell phone buzzes like bees pollinating almond trees
It is during these times that he seeks grounding
and he finds it in the community around him
I realized we’re still playing these games in front of my family
relatives and friends on Friday night,” he said
Editor’s Note: Ron Agostini had a long career as a columnist on all levels of sports at the Modesto Bee and frequently wrote about and covered high school sports
He still writes regularly in retirement for the FrontRowPreps.com website
Ron will be inducted into the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Hall of Fame in the media category
He was recently the grand marshal of the East Union High (Manteca) homecoming parade

Hughson is one of the most desirable places to live in Stanislaus County
George Carr reported in the annual “State of the City” address given March 26 at Samaritan Village
Hughson is expected to grow from its current population of just over 7,700 to just under 10,000 residents with the build-out of the 299-lot Parkwood subdivision
“Since I moved here in 1990 this city has grown by over 4,000 people
which is an average of 114 people per year since,” said Carr
The mayor began his speech detailing the history of Hughson beginning in 1907 and eventually being incorporated as a city in 1972 for dedicated police protection
the city now contracts with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department for protection and Carr said Hughson is “considered the safest city in the county.”
“These individuals make sure we are safe and protected
while building relationships with everyone they encounter
Our deputies maintain greater than expected visibility
while also educating the public on laws and regulations.”
Mayor Carr reviewed improvements added in 2024
• Replacing the ADA parking on Third Street and added ADA parking on Hughson Avenue
• Addition of a large monument sign on Santa Fe Avenue at Hughson Avenue
• Completed on the full renovation of LeBright Park
used by local youth baseball and football organizations
the city has invested over $1 million installation of 2 new backstops
an ADA walkway with areas to view the games at every field
a new concession stand and restroom facility
and the addition of new ADA parking stalls and paving of the parking lot
“We are also in the process of upgrading all the streets in the city
This street preservation project is being completed in three phases
Phase 2 will begin next month (April 2025)
This work helps Hughson extend and maintain the condition
and potentially earns us the highest road scores in the county.”
He said the specific improvements have been funded through grant programs
federal ARPA funds and Measure L tax dollars “so the City of Hughson does not have to incur expensive loans for these improvements that would impact the citizens of Hughson.”
Carr noted that his city is in the process of updating its Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA)
which is a system of software and hardware elements
to prevent disruptions in Hughson’s water and wastewater operations
The next big project is the design of a new Civic Center/Public Safey Center
The current City Hall and Police Services building dates back to the 1940s
”Both buildings have out lived their life spans
With all the city growth over the last approximately 84 years
these structures are becoming too small for daily business
Currently we are looking at combining fire and police into a public safety center
and relocating the library with City Hall and the community/senior center
This project should benefit all the residents of Hughson well in the future.”
Mayor Carr said at least one community input workshop has been held and more will be held in the future
The city is also repairing or replacing sections of sidewalk on Hughson Avenue and adding street lighting and speakers to downtown
“The city remains focused on its efforts in continuing to make the downtown an area where our community gathers and builds together,” Carr said
The city continues to design a pedestrian walkway over the railroad tracks along Santa Fe Avenue at Whitmore Avenue
saying “city staff continues to work with BNSF to finalize the design and timing of construction for this project.”
The city is also hard at work on expanding parks
recreation and entertainment options in Hughson and this summer will introduce the “Park after Dark series” whereby Rolland Starn Park will be kept open with the lights for families and children to enjoy after hiding from the summer heat all day
The event is set for Fridays in June and July
“We are very excited to bring this to our community
Anthony’s Catholic Church has been brought into the city limits to allow for connection to city utilities
He mentioned three new businesses which were recently added in Hughson
a community Strength and conditioning gym on Whitmore Avenue; Smith Woodcraft & Design on Hughson Avenue; and Ann’s Fish n’ Chips on Third Street
Several commercial and industrial projects on Hughson’s horizon include:
• A two-story restaurant with rooftop bar for Agave Azul at Hughson Avenue and Third Street
which was approved by the Planning Commission in October
• A proposed commercial development on Whitmore Avenue at Tully Road to include a grocery store as the anchor
The project is undergoing environmental review
• An industrial subdivision on Tully Road at Roeding Road is also in the planning and environmental review stages for the subdivision of land into 34 one-acre industrial parcels
• United Pavement and Jimenez Trucking have been approved for new development of two parcels on Tully Road
a concrete batch plant (UPM) and truck repair shop (Jimenez Tires)
saying prudent spending has allowed a balanced budget
Revenues of $17.15 million and expenses of $17 million has left a surplus of $122,462
“The city has a healthy General Fund Reserve as well as a 33% contingency fund
This allows the city to review and address any deferred maintenance issues
and reserves funds to cover any unanticipated or emergency expenses that may arise
we must always be financially prepared for the future.”
The mayor said the City Council continues to work on many priorities including
increasing transparency and public awareness; staffing assessments and development opportunities; revitalizing downtown; completing the update of the Hughson General Plan and Housing Element
including annexation of industrial zoned land; maintaining streets
and wastewater facilities and parks; strengthening community safety through crime prevention reduction activities; maintaining a structurally sound budget; and providing efficient government operations
“The greatness of the City of Hughson is also because of all the residents
Events like our annual Fruit & Nut Festival
and our beloved Christmas Parade followed by the fire district’s Operation Santa
where Santa Claus rides on the top of a fire truck going down every street in Hughson
While the fire district completes Operation Santa
the city follows behind the fire truck looking and judging all the festively decorated houses for our ‘Light Up the Town’ event
It is very heartwarming seeing all the children
and now dogs come out to see and interact with Santa
“The City of Hughson has continued to develop and maintain many great partnerships with several local organizations
The school 2+2 committee consisting of two city councilmembers and two school representatives
Fire 2+2 committee consisting of two City Councilmembers and two Fire representatives
Stanislaus Economic Development Action Committee
and of course Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department
Through these partnerships Hughson is able to acquire funding for projects within the city so as not to tax the residents.”
Carr ended his speech praising his fellow councilmembers Susana Vasquez
Julie Strain and Vice Mayor Randy Crooker and adding: “I am truly blessed to have these four people as partners working for the betterment of the City of Hughson.”
“But most importantly I want to thank the citizens of Hughson for putting their trust in me to help lead this great city.”
A handful of track and field programs from across multiple local leagues came together on April 12 at the Hughson Vintage Invitational
Denair and host Hughson were among the 23 in attendance
and saw several of their student-athletes either win or set new school records

as well as in relay teams in the 800-meter sprint medley with Soares
Kyndall Johnston and Brianna Dias (1:57.70) and the 4x400 with Soares
set a school record of her own by finishing the two-mile race in 11 minutes
It was nearly five seconds faster than the runner-up
The junior also owns the top 3200-meter (11:41.59) mark in Yellowjackets history
Mia Westmoreland and Emma Nyman also own the top 400-meter distance medley relay mark
Not only are some of the area athletes incredibly fast
Pitman freshman Emily Martinez won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.27 seconds
Sophomore teammate Julianne Ramirez won the long jump with a heave of 15 feet
Hughson senior Liliana Silva dominated the girls’ pole vault by clearing 10 feet
won the pole vault competition with a leap of 12 feet
which was a whole foot higher than the next closest athlete

Hector Nuno-Garcia and Leland Luhdorff won in 51.19 seconds
won the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:35.17

Hughson junior Noeli Gomez-Orozco won her mile race with a time of 5:36.86

“With the effort of state and local investigators this suspect is in custody and is facing prosecution
We appreciate the effort of those who investigate this type of fraudulent activity.”
Stanislaus County District Attorney Jeff Laugero announced that Lana Casey
and tax evasion with special allegations of aggravated white-collar crime and taking advantage of a position of trust.
The grand jury was presented evidence over three days by the District Attorney’s Office before returning the Indictment. Shortly after the Indictment was returned
investigators with the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office arrested Casey. Casey is currently being held in custody on $1.455 million bail with an order that she not be released on bail without first establishing a legitimate source for any bail posted
The indictment relates to allegations that Casey fraudulently obtained approximately $214,000 from non-profit organizations serving the Oak Valley District Hospital in Oakdale
by drafting herself and others checks from accounts belonging to the non-profit organizations. Casey is also alleged to have written checks to a mortgage company as well as a company that sold pool fencing
it is alleged that after taking money from the non-profits
Casey went on to take money from trusts associated with Carolyn W
Reynolds. A thorough forensic audit by the California Franchise Tax Board determined that Casey has $1.453 million in unreported income between 2018 and 2021 and determined that approximately $1,211 million of that income was embezzled
It is also alleged that Casey illegally laundered the money by conducting transactions through financial institutions and felony tax evasion. Under state and federal law
individuals must pay money on earnings whether lawfully or unlawfully obtained.
This case was investigated by the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation
and the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation
