Ten candidates are vying for four positions on Humble ISD's board of trustees in the May 3 election Bo Nickal’s first loss came in brutal fashion Matched up with the far more experienced Reinier de Ridder in the UFC Des Moines co-main event Nickal looked completely outmatched as the former two-division ONE Champion titleholder outworked him in every phase of the game en-route to a second-round TKO victory De Ridder was grounded early on by the three-time NCAA wrestling champion but utilized his slick grappling to turn the tables and end up in top position With three times as many pro fights as Nickal heading into Saturday de Ridder never looked rushed or panicked even as the powerful Nickal went to lock up with him The end came when de Ridder went to the body damaging Nickal with a hard knee up the middle and prompting referee Mike Beltran to step in for the stoppage Check out how the pros reacted to Nickal’s hype train being halted The wrestling world has taken a hit today. Keep your head up @NoBickal this is not the end I got finished by Demetrious Johnson with a similar body shot and I went on to avenge that loss and become champion Well Bo's comment about being the better striker didn't age too well...BUT he stepped up and competed with a very experienced veteran. Privacy, Terms of Use, Comment Rules One of pontiff’s last acts was to simplify papal rites stripping away elaborate rituals and scaling back procession When the late Pope Francis stepped on to the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica to give his first speech as leader of the Catholic church in March 2013 he cast away formality by dressing in simple white robes instead of the regal ermine-trimmed cape usually worn by newly elected pontiffs The next day, Francis – a name chosen in honour of Francis of Assisi, the Italian saint who renounced a life of luxury to help the poor – returned to the Rome hotel in which he had stayed before the conclave to pick up his luggage and pay his bill. He substituted a plush apostolic apartment for a simple room within the Vatican walls and did not spend his summers in Castel Gandolfo an opulent 12th-century fortress close to Rome These humble gestures set the tone for much of Francis’s 12-year papacy with one of his final acts being to simplify papal funeral rites breaking with longstanding Vatican tradition Pope Francis delivers his first address Guardian“If you think back to just a few years ago when [the former] Pope Benedict was buried we saw all the pomp and circumstance of the Vatican on display,” said Chris White the Vatican correspondent for National Catholic Reporter “But Francis has done away with all of that.” 0:46Thousands queue to pay respects to Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican – videoTraditional papal funerals involved dead popes having three coffins – one made out of cypress wood, one of lead and one of elm, which are placed one inside the other before the body is placed inside and then buried in the Vatican grottoes beneath St Peter’s. But Francis shunned these rituals when he approved the simplified rules in April 2024. People will still be able to see his body in the basilica, but his remains will be placed in one simple coffin made of wood and lined with zinc, and will not be raised on a platform. The coffin will remain open until the night before the funeral. Read more“Francis made it very clear that he didn’t want his body put on display so there will be none of that sort of ritual,” added White when all the eyes of the world are on the Catholic church – he wants to send a signal not of riches The past two papal funerals, including that of Pope John Paul II in 2005 Francis said he would not be buried in the Vatican and had instead prepared his tomb at the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome’s Esquilino neighbourhood where he went to pray before and after trips overseas The procession involving the transfer of his coffin from the Vatican to Esquilino which would mean a journey of two or three miles through central Rome would inevitably involve the Vatican’s Swiss Guards although it is unclear if a plan was drawn-up before Francis’s death “We follow papal funeral protocol but we don’t know exactly what that might be until a pope has died,” said a source for the guards White expected the procession to be “very scaled back” “Past popes in decades and centuries gone by have had their body taken from village to village So… we need to talk about this RAGGEDY narrative that women need to be humble but an obsession that people have to ensure that girls and women are “humble” as if the day we were born went on the Call Her Daddy podcast and said “there are a whole lot of women not aspiring to be humble” I felt that in my SOUL When we have had to be EXCEPTIONAL to excel I write for the girls and women who have never aspired to be humble We know that the ones who benefit from our humility are the same ones who have built systems that thrive on our DOUBT But never will my humility be tied to the diminishing of myself or how dope I am God really put all this creativity into making us brilliant and bold and beautiful… and humble is supposed to be our goal I wrote PROFESSIONAL TROUBLEMAKER to remind us that we don’t need to spend so much time letting fear keep us shrinking We literally cannot afford to continue to humble ourselves into bent backs And when it was time to write my LITTLE TROUBLEMAKER children’s book series I wanted them to center around a character And even when she makes a mistake (which she always will) she doesn’t walk away thinking “I am a mistake.” She thinks: “I MADE A MISTAKE AND NOW I KNOW BETTER So that’s why I put EVERYTHING behind Little Luvvie She represents the inner child who got the permission earlier to be ALL OF THIS Grab a copy of Little Troublemaker Defends Her Name today, and help me spread this message to the little ones in your life who deserve to know that the world benefits from their unabashed confidence and their curiosity to learn and grow… I want to hear from you: What would your life look like today if someone had taught you that being humble wasn’t the ultimate goal when you were growing up PS: Don’t forget that when you pre-order your copy of Little Troublemaker Defends Her Name today you’ll get a free set of adorable and empowering Activity Sheets to use with the kids in your life Step 1 → You can pre-order the book here Step 2 → Then, you can submit your information to claim your bonus sheets here It is time to write that book. that doubles as a signal booster I want one for a low-key gaming setup that does not look like it is held together with RGB lighting and prayer “Don’t forget to pray for me,” were the words with which the late Pope Francis would always conclude his homilies and various speeches Seven days before the start of the conclave on the eve of May 1 and the beginning of the Marian month the College of Cardinals released a declaration inviting the faithful to pray for their discernment in choosing the next Pope ensuring the continuity of the Apostolic See during the sede vacante describe prayer as a “true strength” capable “of fostering the unity of all members in the one Body of Christ.” a French-born professor of theology in Rome and Toulouse spoke to Vatican News about the Cardinals’ invitation and their need for the prayer of the universal Church Q: How can the collective prayer of all the faithful foster the unity of the Church But there would be nothing more—a sort of glass ceiling we could not break through It is the Holy Spirit who pulls us toward the world above He is the one who gives the Church her unity If we approach the event of the election of a new Successor of Peter with a worldly attitude—that is full of commentary and chatter—we risk missing the supernatural dimension that this event invites us to receive in faith The Holy Spirit is the conductor who brings us into harmony with one another praying with one heart to welcome the work of the Holy Spirit for them are preparing to enter into this same process It is not merely a human matter of electing a leader There is an opening of the heart to a work that surpasses us the Cardinals invoke the Pauline metaphor of the living body of the Church currently represented in an eminent way by the College of Cardinals What is extraordinarily beautiful is that one of the most decisive vital organs is now telling the entire body we need the prayer of all.” We need the whole body to unite around the work the Holy Spirit wants to accomplish for the Church I find it incredibly beautiful that they see themselves as serving a living body that is greater than themselves If we go back to Saint Paul’s great images the head; the Holy Spirit is like the soul animating the body The Magisterium is one of the decisive vital organs These vital organs serve a living body that is greater than they are What the Cardinals are doing is for the sake of the entire living body animated by the Holy Spirit Q: Faced with the weight and grandeur of the task before the Cardinals how is the prayer of the people of God an act of humility Your question makes me think of how appropriate the liturgical calendar is We are in the post-Easter liturgical season were still in a sort of in-between—they didn’t quite know what to do The Church senses this need to come together in unanimous prayer—the prayer of the little ones There are countless anecdotes in popular tradition that highlight the power of humble prayer Like the one about the great preacher in the pulpit giving a magnificent sermon The Holy Spirit shows him that the reason for all this success is the little elderly woman beneath the pulpit praying her rosary The prayer of the little ones holds the Church up It is important to rally everyone to this prayer so we may receive the will of the Holy Spirit for the Church May hearts today be softened and become attentive to what the Spirit is saying to the Churches and the liturgy invites us to meditate on the Book of Revelation there are those extraordinary passages where the risen Jesus invites the Churches to listen to what the Spirit is saying to the Churches What is the Spirit saying to the Church today All the side questions are just worldly chatter The question is not whether one should be traditionalist or progressive The central question is: What does the Holy Spirit want to accomplish for humanity today through the succession of the apostles The Church is not a human project done for Bend Herald automotive aficionados Jack Hobbs and Nathan Chang sat down for a meal together in the dining hall Their casual conversation about the absence of a motorsports club at Clemson soon became a call to action and the boys quickly recorded their idea on the first thing they could find — a napkin Two and a half years after its humble origin the Clemson Tiger Racing club has two functioning race cars and over 100 members across a multitude of roles who compete in intense track events all across the country.  Clemson Tiger Racing operates with the primary goal of educating students about the art of motorsport racing There are a variety of roles within the club — including drivers pit crew and race engineers — which allow students to specialize in areas that interest them and pursue leadership positions within their desired domain members are able to obtain legitimate racing licenses This gives them the unique opportunity to engage in the thrilling experience of driving a real race car in competition and provides certification that permits a student to race anywhere in the world “Nathan and I built Clemson Tiger Racing to be inclusive Nothing compares to the sense of family we have here.” The founders of Clemson Tiger Racing are nothing short of passionate about their club and the automotive field as a whole Hobbs — an electrical engineering major from Atlanta in automotive engineering beginning in the summer while Chang — a mechanical engineering graduate from Marietta Georgia — is a first-year master’s student in automotive engineering and they sought to share this experience with other students “It’s great to learn all of the engineering practices but students are missing that connection to the motorsports industry which you can only get through racing,” Hobbs says “What we tasked ourselves with was creating a program that not only educates students about what racing is but actually trains them and provides them opportunities to get in a race car and compete in the Collegiate Racing Series.” The Collegiate Racing Series is a wheel to wheel racing competition between over 40 colleges across the United States Teams face off in a 10-race season to secure a spot in the championship where everything will be put on the line in a single race for the ultimate national victory It is a landmark program in the world of collegiate motorsports and the original idea can be traced back to none other than Clemson’s own Jack Hobbs who attributes his success to his involvement with Clemson Tiger Racing “The things I’ve learned and the experience I’ve developed through running Clemson Tiger Racing has led me to create a fully fledged company; it has completely uprooted my life in terms of where I see myself in 10 years,” Hobbs says “I owe it all to the opportunity that Clemson provided me as a student to sit in a dining hall and say The Clemson Tiger Racing club is founded on two core principles — a championship-winning mindset and a legacy-driven attitude.  down to the tiniest little bolt you tighten That could make or break our championship,” says Hobbs we try to encourage people to show their best and remind them that they have the opportunity to walk away from here with something that most people in universities can only dream of.” Hobbs and Chang have had their fair share of memorable experiences during their time in Clemson Tiger Racing Hobbs fondly remembers the club’s inaugural race — an all female event with the first race on track being entrusted to then club member Mackenzie Williams Chang reflects on the annual Barber Motorsports Park trip in Alabama describing it with a term that can effectively summarize both students’ Clemson Tiger Racing experience — “one of a kind.” Chang will be taking over the club as Hobbs takes the bittersweet step into a full-time role with the Collegiate Racing Series Hobbs believes he is leaving the leadership in good hands as Chang’s goals encourage enduring growth for the club “Bringing up the next generation that can run Clemson Tiger Racing is the ultimate goal here — other than winning we have a bunch of people asking how to become leaders Or email us at screamo-tinged melodies that explored with raw emotion themes like the cycle of addiction feeling stuck and the desire to branch out and see the world The young musicians, who would eventually call themselves The Used “We all wanted to be on tour,” The Used lead singer Bert McCracken recently told the Deseret News Our driving force was just to be able to do what we do.” And according to McCracken and Used bassist Jeph Howard venues in Utah County weren’t ready for what they had to offer at the start of the millennium a 2001 gig at Johnny B’s Comedy Club in Provo the band was “immediately asked to never come back again,” McCracken recalled … And I think somebody got his front teeth knocked out The band played just a handful of shows in Utah before they were signed by Reprise Records “They just weren’t ready for heavy music anywhere in Utah County,” McCracken said and we were definitely ostracized for our style of music.” They just weren’t ready for heavy music anywhere in Utah County and we were definitely ostracized for our style of music “I think it was something brand new and something that had never been heard before The Used is returning to its Utah roots to do something that would’ve seemed impossible in those earliest days: play the same venue three times Monday and Tuesday at Salt Lake’s Union Event Center each night playing through one of their first three albums McCracken and Howard reflected on The Used’s rapid rise to fame — and how Utah still holds a special place in their hearts there wasn’t much of a music scene in Utah County back in 2000 — or at least one that was well-defined Any band that was a band would play together a single show could have everything from ska to metal to pop punk “We were just all holding it together,” Howard said “We weren’t really worried about having a genre if you’re trying to hold on and play music Howard and McCracken — who were each in their own bands — were already aware of each other before The Used formed Howard was staying in a spare room at his mom’s apartment in Orem when The Used started composing music in a closet-turned-studio the opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time kind of sleeping around on friends’ couches and whatnot,” McCracken said recalling how the band members clicked and they were able to quickly write the song “Maybe Memories.” “It’s kind of all uphill from there.” The band later rented a house in Orem and turned yet another closet into a vocal booth where they could record a bunch of demos as McCracken and Howard recalled with a surprising amount of fondness a bat fluttered out and flew all over the house before Howard caught it in a Tupperware container and released it While venues close to home were skeptical of their sound the band’s demos caught the attention of producer John Feldmann the lead singer/guitarist of the ska band Goldfinger out in Los Angeles with only a handful of live shows to its name The Used had support from fans even in their earliest shows but the musicians felt a major shift in momentum — a kind of lightning bolt moment that assured them the band would make it — when they played in Salt Lake City for the 2002 Warped Tour The band’s self-titled debut album had only been out for about a month when the power went out on the small Volcom stage at Utah State Fairpark fans in the crowd kept on singing their breakout hit “Taste of Ink.” we really have something,’” McCracken said Although the music video for “The Taste of Ink” was filmed in Los Angeles, references to Utah are peppered throughout it — one woman wears a BYU shirt and a sign on a convenience store in the video reads “UtahCo, Utah’s finest snack.” “We’ve never shied away from where we came from,” McCracken said. “It’s always been a bit of a point of pride for the band.” We’ve never shied away from where we came from. It’s always been a bit of a point of pride for the band. The Used will perform “Taste of Ink”— and all of the songs on the self-titled album — Saturday night. For McCracken and Howard, that debut record brings them back to those early days of trying to rise out of Utah County and make it as a band, the urge to get out and experience the world. The band will play through its follow-up album, “In Love and Death,” Monday night. The 2004 offering came after they’d been touring for a bit, and had a little more control in and understanding of the music industry. The album was also heavily influenced by tragedy that hit close to home for McCracken. The third album, McCracken and Howard only sort of joke, is how they can tell who their “hardcore fans” are. “We kind of get a feel for who is in love with the first two records, and then we see who the hardcore fans are — they come out and sing ‘Lies for the Liars,’” McCracken said. “True hardcore fans are coming out and singing every word.” “Lies for the Liars” marked somewhat of a stylistic departure from the band’s original sound — ”We wanted to make something very theatrical and almost Tim Burton-esque,” McCracken said. “Throughout the years, the band has kind of taken on a new face, but at the same time, remained true to our origins,” the singer continued. “Twenty-five years later, we’re all completely different people, but I think in the writing sessions, we’re the same people. We like to open up about our problems and really capture something that makes sense for the time … which is not a lot different from when we wrote the self-titled.” I think music and art itself has to evolve, and if it doesn’t, it’s kind of lying. If you’re not progressing and changing — even in a negative way — you’re sort of lying to yourself and lying to people. “I think music and art itself has to evolve, and if it doesn’t, it’s kind of lying,” Howard added. “If you’re not progressing and changing — even in a negative way — you’re sort of lying to yourself and lying to people.” It’s been a little over a month since The Used kicked off the 25th anniversary tour. While a three-night stint in each city may seem taxing, it has actually been somewhat of a welcome change for the band since the runtime of an album is roughly 20-30 minutes shorter than their regular set — something McCracken said he has been appreciating at his age. McCracken and Howard have loved the fan response to the tour, including learning from fans and meet and greets about why a certain album resonates more than another. “Each night is very different,” Howard said. Playing through these albums in Utah, the home of their very first fans, gives The Used the chance to reflect on their humble start while also celebrating how far they’ve come over 25 years. “Our fans of trustees When consumers in Shanghai pick up weekend snacks at Freshippo they may notice black packages of Chen Shu brand sour and spicy instant noodles made of sweet potatoes from faraway Zhouzhai village in Guizhou province Zhouzhai rests on steep slopes and rocky soil which render most crop cultivation virtually impossible Originating in South America and now common in China the potatoes became so abundant in Zhouzhai that farmers fed them to their pigs Under Party branch secretary Zhang Cheng's leadership the tuber now serves as a sort of currency for residents Each mu — 0.067 hectares — of sweet potatoes brings in about 3,000 yuan ($410.2) was the village's first vocational school graduate He remembers the day when he left for Guiyang families ate them at home or fed them to livestock but hardly anyone dreamed of exchanging them for other goods Zhang parlayed his technical skills into a cement business in Guiyang and lived a comfortable life he found his hometown still mired in poverty Zhouzhai's young people had been migrating to cities for work leaving old farmers and small children at home The left-behind children faced mounting challenges in daily life and education Zhang donated more than 1.2 million yuan for relief and established a scholarship program for local students Zhang knew charity alone could not transform an entire community Because potatoes can withstand droughts and floods That is one reason Zhang chose them to help lift the people of Zhouzhai out of poverty The village had opened a government-backed sweet potato noodle processing facility back in 2016 but it failed due to a lack of good branding and sales channels it had accumulated a collective debt of 680,000 yuan Zhang conducted a year of market research and invested more than 45 million yuan in 2018 to build a modern starch and sweet potato flour factory in the village He installed the country's most advanced production lines registered the Chen Shu brand and put people to work Focusing mainly on young consumers who love spicy and sour noodle cups made from pure sweet potato starch the company grew to produce 40 different products It converts 150,000 tons of fresh tubers a year into 25,000 tons of starch and 12,000 tons of noodles which are then transformed into 100 million cups of spicy and sour noodles The company has become Guizhou's largest sweet potato processor One of China's major snack brands was criticized online for having no real sweet potato content in its so-called sweet potato noodles viral images of trucks piled high with Guizhou tubers outside the Chen Shu plant turned the company's "100 percent sweet potato" claim into its loudest advertisement Annual revenue jumped from 340 million yuan in 2023 to 710 million yuan in 2024 Zhang aims to earn 1 billion yuan by the end of this year The booming sales have changed people's lives in Zhouzhai six migrant workers returned in 2018 to join the company they earned more than 400,000 yuan in wages the company has contracts for 130,000 mu of sweet potatoes the crop will bring tens of millions of yuan to local farmers The factory also provides more than 700 steady jobs mainly for local women and returning young people at an average monthly income of more than 4,300 yuan residents earned 1.8 million yuan in wages pushing per capita disposable income to 28,000 yuan — more than two and a half times what it was in 2018 To stay ahead of the changing trends and adapt to consumers' tastes Zhang established an R&D center in Shenzhen where he can track new trends and hire top talent He will soon launch a Luosifen noodle product based on sweet potato starch noodles that promises a chewier and more elastic bite than traditional rice noodles Since taking charge of the company and being elected Party branch secretary of Zhouzhai in March 2022 Zhang has overseen every facet of village life At 8 pm on the last Saturday of each month he and other cadres host a village meeting via livestream on Douyin Migrant workers and the elderly at home tune in to hear new policies These online gatherings draw village leaders and consumers from all across the country Zhang sticks around to sell farm goods from Zhouzhai "Convenience foods still hold huge promise," Zhang said and I believe I can lead more of my neighbors to better lives." National Champion in wrestling has been built up as the next big name in the sport and for good reason Nickal has the wrestling and athletic background to make a big push up the UFC middleweight ladder but some feared his co-main event clash with RDR was going to be more than he could handle at this point in his career Nickal was still a sizeable betting favorite to take care of de Ridder and push his undefeated UFC record to 5-0 Little did Nickal know that RDR would shutdown his wrestling game and hurt him on the feet with punches and knees to the body One knee put Nickal out of commission in the second round and forced the referee to step in to stop the fight fight fans came out in droves to discuss Nickal’s defeat on social media and throw some salt in his wounds “Bo thought he could hang with Khamzat lmaoooo.” “Can’t believe Bo Nickal got folded the first time he was touched in his career.” “If you get fraud checked that’s one thing but quitting like Bo did is unacceptable Didn’t even look like he wanted to be in there.” “And this guy had Khamzat’s name in his mouth LMAO.” Some fellow UFC and MMA fighters also had things to say about Nickal’s surprising received a “C” for the 2022-23 school year in the Texas Education Agency’s accountability ratings for school districts statewide What ensued last week was quite the contrary Sanders dropped all the way down to the fifth round This was even with the general understanding that he possesses the talent enough to be drafted in round one they love Russell Wilson until he begins to assert himself a certain way They loved Terrell Owens for his antics on the field He helped sell the league with his charisma But when he was outspoken and brash about some of his football qualms the establishment just didn’t gel with it as someone who should’ve been voted into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot that honor should only take into account your production on the field Tua Tagovailoa still takes the field with his litany of severe concussion history Many may view him as a warrior for doing so I think that his years after football may be more compromised than most Numerous sexual misconduct allegations plagued his career If we take a moment to look at a figure like Colin Kaepernick who showed real coverage and made a statement when we finally get to a player like Shedeur Sanders they see someone who comes from the stock of people who won’t play the establishment’s game He is the son of “Primetime” Deion Sanders He is also the current head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes the same program that his newly drafted son played for His father also ensured to instill respect as well are both headed into the NFL in the same year Shilo signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent safety Both of Sanders’ kids are outspoken people Yet neither of them come to the NFL with any true controversy These young men have only been vocal and confident players throughout their careers thus far But when you come from a family that not only cares but knows the machine in which these men are entering the NFL sought to send this message of “I brought you into this world I can take you out.” That’s what the NFL wants Everyone in their minds needs to get in line and he’ll eventually become what 31 other teams slept on but he already knows all of what he possesses It’ll be
