The AVP Huntington Beach Open Heritage Event is just around the corner
and this year’s competition promises to be an electrifying showcase of professional beach volleyball
this prestigious event is the last opportunity for aspiring teams to claim a coveted spot in the 2025 AVP League
With only two of eight AVP League qualification spots remaining
this event will make or break teams’ seasons
Taryn Brasher / Kristen Nuss • Brandie Wilkerson / Melissa Humana-Paredes • Phil Dalhausser / Trevor Crabb
here’s the pecking order heading into the bracket:
What this means: If/when front-runners stumble
the door cracks open for the next wave of title-hungry duos
In the event of a tie between two or more teams in the standings of the 2025 League Qualification Series for the final spot(s) in the League
the following tiebreak procedures will be applied in order:
To give fans a clear “line in the sand,” we’ve calculated the minimum finish each contender needs—based on where the Men’s and Women’s Frontrunners land—to surpass their total points and grab one of the last two leaderboard spots
Note: This isn’t a perfect predictor—matchups
and upsets all matter—but it gives a useful reference for what “deep” really means on the sand
Use these thresholds to track the action: every match for the chasing pack is more than a victory—it’s a ticket closer to the AVP League
Tickets: This event is open to the public but STADIUM COURT is ticketed and selling fast!

Shrimp loukoumades with shrimp tempura over sesame seaweed and sambal aioli at Noema in Huntington
Long Island’s most inventive Greek eatery appears to have closed
Noema in Huntington's phone line has a recorded message stating the eatery is "temporarily closed" and general reservations on the restaurant's OpenTable page are no longer available
Owner Lisa DiPinto did not immediately respond to a call and text messages for comment
Noema made a splash when it opened in 2023
DiPinto decorated the tri-level space with marble panels
wicker wall coverings and decorative accents that had all been imported from Greece
chef Nicholas Poulmentis pushed the limits of Hellenic cuisine
turning the honeyed fried dough balls called loukoumades into shrimp balls served with sambal aioli
and replacing the ubiquitous round zucchini chips with fried zucchini batons that were stacked like Lincoln logs on a foundation not of garlicky almond-milk tzatziki
His signature black-truffle tarama involved inky
truffle-infused whipped herring roe and a white

DiPinto announced a second Noema in the old Gross Jewelers building at the corner of Franklin and Stewart avenues in Garden City

“When an unsuspecting star wanders too close to a supermassive black hole
the star can be ripped apart by the black hole’s immense gravity,” explains Piro
“As the black hole messily feeds on the star
it produces an amazing display of light as bright as ten billion suns for many months.”
The lecture will focus on tidal disruption events (TDEs)
rare cosmic phenomena first theorized in the late 20th century and observed more frequently since the advent of deep-sky surveys
These events occur when stars are torn apart by black holes
creating electromagnetic flares visible across the universe that can last several months
Piro will discuss recent discoveries made possible by advanced astronomical surveys like the Zwicky Transient Facility and Pan-STARRS
A key highlight of the presentation will be the mysterious “heartbeat” phenomenon observed years after these feeding events
Scientists have discovered that some black holes produce periodic X-ray eruptions that repeat every several hours long after consuming a star
more than doubling the number of known events in the nearby universe
Piro will present current theories explaining these unusual X-ray patterns
with leading models suggesting disk instabilities or delayed accretion processes as possible causes
These findings stem from ongoing research documented in peer-reviewed publications including the Astrophysical Journal Letters
The event underscores Pasadena’s prominent role in astronomical research and its historical leadership in astrophysics
one of the oldest independent astronomical research institutions in the U.S
joins other local institutions like Caltech and National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in advancing our understanding of the universe
Black holes themselves are detected through indirect methods
Astronomers observe the gravitational effects on nearby objects
detect X-rays from hot gas in accretion disks
and measure gravitational waves from black hole mergers to infer their presence and properties
Piro specializes in compact objects like black holes and neutron stars
His research combines expertise in thermodynamics
and fluid dynamics to predict and understand novel astrophysical phenomena
The lecture will be held at The Huntington Library
attendees must make reservations in advance through the Huntington’s website
This public science lecture provides the community with access to cutting-edge astrophysical research and enhances public understanding of cosmic phenomena

The bank has 37 of the 55 branches it plans to open in North and South Carolina under letter of intent for real estate development
Huntington Bank is on track to complete its Carolinas expansion in three years rather than the five identified initially
The Columbus, Ohio-based regional said last September it was expanding in North and South Carolina
planning to open 55 branches in five years across six metro areas: Charlotte
Raleigh and Winston-Salem in North Carolina
Huntington CFO Zach Wasserman said Thursday the bank has 37 of those 55 branches under letter of intent for real estate development
The lender initially announced commercial expansions into North and South Carolina and Texas in late 2023 and early 2024
which has almost 970 branches in 13 states
but “what we weren’t doing was servicing the local middle market,” Wasserman said in an interview
Expansions in the Carolinas and Texas were focused on building teams to cater to middle-market companies
capital markets and treasury management services
That approach is a relatively low-cost way to launch and build the brand in a new market
and the bank achieved profitability in those markets in less than a year
What it’s now pursuing in the Carolinas is what it considers a second phase: building out a physical branch infrastructure
lining up the organizational resources to offer its full consumer product set
and putting big marketing dollars behind it all
“Building out the entirety of the Huntington banking franchise is a more significant investment,” including “hundreds of millions of dollars” in marketing
Wasserman declined to provide a more specific dollar figure for the Carolinas and Texas expansions. He said it’s “quite significant,” although absorbable within the bank’s overall expenses and capital guidance. Huntington has said non-interest expenses are expected to grow 3.5% to 4.5% this year
The bank said in September that it expects to add about 350 employees across business lines through the Carolinas expansion. Wasserman said the bank is on the path of hiring “dozens of people” and expects Huntington will take on “hundreds more colleagues.” Huntington currently has about 20,100 employees.
The bank spends a good deal of time considering growth markets that hold promise, both within its existing footprint and adjacent territories, Wasserman said. It’s almost a “postal code by postal code-level analysis” that examines migration trends and where economic growth and business formation are occurring, he said.
The Southeast, Southwest and the Mountain West – including Denver, where the bank has also enhanced its presence – have appeared the most promising in terms of opportunity for Huntington. And despite any recent concerns about the economic impact of tariffs or lingering inflation, the long-term trends driving growth in those regions “aren’t going to stop,” Wasserman said.
Of course, there’s no shortage of competitors angling to take share in those regions, from big banks like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, U.S. Bank and PNC, to regional rivals such as Fifth Third. These regions aren’t underbanked, Wasserman acknowledged.
Huntington aims to stand out by bringing the capabilities of a top-20 bank, while delivering locally, he said.
“That is not always the way that banks go to market,” Wasserman said.
It’s rare for a regional bank of Huntington’s size to have the consumer franchise that it does, he said, adding that the bank is squarely focused on service, products, transparency and digital capabilities.
Huntington has high hopes for the Carolinas expansion: Wasserman declined to provide a breakdown of the bank’s business by region, but said executives expect that by 2030, North and South Carolina will rank in the lender’s top four regions, rivaling central Ohio, northern Ohio and Michigan in terms of scale.
Sun Belt expansion is helping fuel the bank’s broader growth ambitions. When Wasserman joined in 2019, the lender had about $110 billion in assets and about $4 billion in revenue. Today, Huntington has $210 billion in assets and is approaching $8 billion in annual revenue.
The regional lender doesn’t set targets as far as overall size, Wasserman said. But by the end of the decade, “I wouldn’t be surprised to see that same level of growth,” he said, adding that the emphasis for Huntington is on organic growth. This past quarter, the bank added groups focused on aerospace and defense as well as financial institutions to its specialty lending verticals.
Additional markets may play a part in that organic growth strategy, too.
“There are certainly other areas that are attractive,” Wasserman said. Over the moderate term, “there could well be additional geographic territories we expand into. Our confidence in our efficacy of that playbook is enhanced just based on how well this is going for us thus far.”
For now, the bank sees plenty of opportunity in its newer markets, “and we’re going to keep expanding into these states,” he said.
“The decision criteria here is really about making sure that we’re incredibly confident that we can fully win in the market, be ready to put the full weight of the company behind it, and we’re ready to execute on that,” he said. “The last thing we’d want to do is overextend ourselves, and not be really able to ensure that we’re successful.”

Regulators, however, handed Discover several consent orders. Most notably, the FDIC ordered the company to distribute $1.225 billion in restitution to customers overcharged between 2007 and 2023.
The removal of Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka may put other regulators at risk, including Fed Chair Jerome Powell, whose termination, the president said Thursday, “cannot come soon enough.”

shipbuilding industry has been in a lull since the height of the pandemic
with companies tied to pre-COVID contracts that are not nearly as profitable now
But the budget winds in Washington appear to be shifting, and Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII 1.46%) is likely to be one of the primary beneficiaries if they do. Shares of Huntington Ingalls traded up 12.9% in April, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence
as investors begin to climb on board for what they believe will be a profitable voyage
Huntington Ingalls has long been considered one of the most vulnerable among the largest defense contractors
The company is one of the two primary shipbuilders for the U.S
but unlike its vertically integrated peers
Huntington relies on ships for nearly all its revenue
The company's shares took a plunge in February after missing earnings expectations
But investors have been slowly warming to the shares as the Washington budget process heats up
In early April, Navy Secretary John Phelan said domestic shipyards and shipbuilding are "a big, big priority for the president," and the Navy upped its long-term goal for fleet size
Huntington Ingalls and General Dynamics were awarded massive contracts to construct Virginia-class submarines
The good news continued into the first day of May
with Huntington Ingalls announcing first-quarter results that topped analyst expectations thanks to shipbuilding margins that came in 90 basis points ahead of expectations
The company also reiterated full-year guidance
though second-quarter projections are a bit below what analysts had expected
Huntington Ingalls appears to have wind in its "sales" for the first time in years
and investors have every reason to be excited about the prospects
Huntington Ingalls has the potential to make up ground in the quarters to come against other defense primes like General Dynamics (18.9 times earnings) and Lockheed Martin (20.7 times earnings)
Investors buying in now need to be aware that these contracts can take years to play out
and funding trickles in as milestones are met
Even if the company does even better than expected when the new budget is finalized
some of those funds will only reach Huntington Ingalls' bottom line toward the end of the decade
but Huntington Ingalls is heading in the right direction
Lou Whiteman has positions in General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin. The Motley Fool recommends Lockheed Martin. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy

Ohio — Haslam Sports Group ("HSG") today reiterated its actions and investments to ensure a thriving long-term future for the Cleveland Browns
Despite the new stadium's significant benefits
the City of Cleveland has been misguiding Clevelanders by inaccurately conflating the Brook Park project with Art Modell breaking a lease and moving a team to an entirely different state
The City has done so by invoking the so-called Modell Law – an Ohio law passed in the 1990s in response to the relocation of the Browns out of Ohio – to try and halt the project
HSG submitted an amended complaint in its federal suit
challenging the city's baseless assertions
HSG's Chief Administrative Officer & General Counsel
"The city has never explained how the Modell Law could sensibly apply to the Browns
who will continue to play games in its stadium until the expiration of its lease
and whose owners have committed to keeping the team in the local area long after the lease expires
the Haslams' proposed unprecedented private investment in a world-class stadium and surrounding development
and their continued unwavering commitment to Northeast Ohio
are the complete opposite of the Modell situation
It's also important to recognize that at least 10 NFL teams play their home games in metropolitan areas outside of the city they represent
so our proposal is entirely consistent with other hometown teams across the country
Our actions in court are intended to ensure that the city's irresponsible and baseless attempt to apply the Modell Law to the Browns does not slow our momentum to build a world-class stadium right here in Northeast Ohio for the Browns
Today's filing affirms that – far from running from the Cleveland area – HSG is reinforcing its commitment and increasing its investment in the region in an unprecedented way
is committing to invest more than $2 billion in private capital in the proposed new stadium and the adjoining mixed-use development
with the total project representing $3.4 billion in economic development
The $2 billion includes an investment of at least $1.2 billion from HSG towards construction of the enclosed stadium (plus any cost overruns)
marking the largest per capita private sports facility investment in U.S
"The Cleveland Browns and our community need and deserve a new home – and from the outset we have been unequivocal that it must positively benefit our community and Northeast Ohio
The proposed Huntington Bank Field in Brook Park meets this vital objective and will reflect positively on our world-class region and its promising future
It also reflects our 100% commitment to keeping the Browns in their home market for generations to come."
Rosen & Katz as it seeks to expeditiously resolve this matter and break ground in Brook Park in 2026
The Cleveland Browns share renderings of a proposed option for a domed stadium in Brook Park as they evaluate the best path forward for the future of the stadium
Haslam Sports Group embraces the positive impact of sports and its unique opportunity to unify communities
Through the Haslam and Johnson families' network of industry experience and relationships
their mission is to create world class organizations that achieve sustainable success
HSG's current portfolio includes ownership of the Cleveland Browns
a controlling interest in the Milwaukee Bucks
the role of investor-operators of the 2x MLS Cup Champion Columbus Crew (2020
HSG is also the parent company of HSG Ventures and HSG Real Estate and has an investment in the Haslam Sports Innovation Center

The model styled her fresh white denim with understated separates for a timeless combination that's easy to recreate
A pair of white jeans is a classic style staple that I think deserves a place in every wardrobe
I also understand there’s something about them that can feel a little daunting to some
If you worry that the fresh white colour is a little too much for you
or may not be as flattering as your old faithful true blue jeans
I urge you to have a rethink for the coming months
White jeans and sunny weather are a match made in heaven, and you’ll be surprised by how much wear you can get out of one pair. When it comes to white jeans outfits for the coming months
your fresh denim can be worn as a base note to bold floral tops
timeless striped T-shirts or even understated black separates – as shown by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
who recently stepped out in a gorgeous monochrome ensemble
The model styled up her Phoebe Philo jeans with a simple white top
which worked as an effortlessly chic outfit combination that can easily be recreated
I love the mix of high and low pieces in Rosie’s outfit
and her finished look will sit well for both day and evening plans
I have rounded up the very same denim pair as well as some similar styles to reinvent her look below
If you're unsure about the best jeans for your body type
these classic cut straight leg jeans are a safe bet and will flatter nicely on most shapes and sizes
Wear them like Rosie and team with matching basics or add interest with a printed blouse
Rosie's jacket by Phoebe Philo has sadly sold out
but this designer double will recreate the look brilliantly
The glossy faux-leather fabric and flicked up collar gives the classic biker style a modern rework
A fuss-free staple like this top is perfect to wear as a simplistic base layer for a wide range of outfits
and buddy up with denim and a cover-up or simply team with a pair of wide leg trousers and a silky scarf
This pair is made from a light cotton fabric that will keep you cool during high summer
they will look chic with an endless number of tops too
I like how the this pair of jeans has been styled on the model - a tan belt gives them a bit of a boho spin that feels very different to Rosie's ensemble
The crisp pleat down the front of these jeans gives the wider cut leg a smarter feel
Tuck in a cami or opt for a top-to-toe colour block outfit by matching them with a crisp white shirt
Rosie’s look is perfect for this tricky in-between-seasons time of year
you could copy her white top and bottom outfit but replace her heavier leather jacket for a patterned bomber or an embroidered waistcoat
When it comes to styling your white jeans, simply wear your pair exactly as you would wear your trusty navy denim. Still unsure? I spoke to Freelance Fashion Editor Antonia Kraskowski for some tips
and she explained: "White jeans are a great investment for the summer season
This light-hued addition to your wardrobe will make you wonder how you ever lived without a pair
as they’re a quick way to make any outfit look fresh
"Wear them with a white tee and matching trainers for an instantly pulled together casual look or style with similar light tones for the perfect low-key summer outfit."
I promise that fresh white jeans are more wearable than you might expect

That’s kind of what happened in the third set
I just think we didn’t really have the opportunity to run them as much as we’d like
I think definitely that’s one of our key strengths.”
Huntington Beach coach Craig Pazanti said the Oilers became “pin-centric” on offense largely because of matchups
