John Christy reviews climate model data with Dr
A new research study from The University of Alabama in Huntsville
a part of The University of Alabama System
how much have urban areas warmed from the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect
The study was co-authored by UAH researcher Danny Braswell
Spencer and Christy’s method uses millions of thermometer observations to quantify the well-known tendency for urban areas to be warmer than rural areas
By relating difference in temperature to differences in population density
in six classes of population density and in 22 different historical periods between 1880 and 2020
the researchers were able to quantify the average rate of warming as a function of population density
“While the statistical signal of urban warming was rather weak due to noise in the data from other non-urbanization effects on weather
showing up in all six classes of population density across all 22 historical periods,” Spencer says
“One of the interesting results was that the most rapid warming occurs as for population growth at the lowest population densities,” Spencer notes
“Then in heavily urbanized areas the warming reaches a peak
with little additional warming as population increases.”
The issue is important because the estimation of the rate of warming in the U.S
due to climate change can be influenced by non-climate processes
which would exist even without global warming
it was found that 8 percent of the rural warming trend was due to urbanization effect
increasing to about 65 percent of the observed warming trend for suburban and urban locations
The thermometer data used were the “raw” data archived by NOAA before any adjustments have been made to the data
Official temperature trends the public see in news reports are based upon adjusted (“homogenized”) data that use comparisons between neighboring stations’ temperature trends to find break points in individual stations’ records
and adjust the measurements based upon a kind of “voting” procedure
Spencer and Christy – along with a number of other researchers – believe this has not sufficiently removed UHI effects from the data
But it remains to be seen what impact their results will have on the debate over just how much warming has been observed in the U.S
and whether current official warming trends have been significantly contaminated by urbanization effects
This research was supported by the United States Department of Energy

including the first scores from Jackson County in some time
And those Jackson County reports did not disappoint
The lowest score in the Tennessee Valley this week is at the Exxon on Wall Triana and Gillespie Road in Madison
It got a 68 due to ham and sausage at the wrong temperature
moldy and spoiled bologna and no paper towels or toilet paper in some of the restrooms
Inspectors say they found spoiled potato salad
black residue in the ice machine and greens and pork at the wrong temperature
They also noted scratches in some pots and pants
Shababy’s Rib Shack on Highway 53 is next with a 74
There was also an issue with raw chicken and beef at the wrong temperature in the cooler
The Taco Bell on Highway 53 just south of Jeff Road was written up for not having any date marks on the tomatoes in the cooler
and multiple soda and tea nozzles that needed to be cleaned out
The inspectors also saw someone touching a cell phone
then go back to making food without washing hands or changing gloves
The Huntsville-based Taqueria La Union food truck has an 81 due to unlabeled chemicals
food temperature issues and food being stored in a hand washing sink
The Exxon at Pulaski Pike and Winchester Road also has an 81
It lost points for not having paper towels at one sink
Luigi’s on Highway 72 in Madison had a dishwasher that was missing sanitizer
The Wendy’s on University Drive also had a dishwasher without any sanitizer in it
along with gnats near a sink and tomatoes at the wrong temperature

There was a hand washing sink blocked by a cutting board
and a thermometer that wasn’t properly calibrated
But the biggest violation is also one of the more strange ones we’ve ever seen
Inspectors say that uncovered foods in the warmer were being contaminated by water spraying from an unknown source
The manager reportedly told the inspector that this always happens when it rains
Right next door to Jefferson’s is Margarita’s
It got an 82 on this inspection due to not having sanitizer in the dishwasher
While in the kitchen an inspector saw an insect fall into a container of hot queso
The Shell Mart on Highway 71 in Higdon had gravy at the wrong temperature
Tokyo on Willow Street in Scottsboro also gets an 83
The inspector cited a broken screen door and a drive-through window being left open as the probable causes
There was also an issue with shrimp at the wrong temperature
Friday’s on Second Street in Stevenson had raw chicken and beef at the wrong temperature
Jackson County Scores and Inspection Notes
The Golden Corral on Cox Creek Parkway has an 82 due to dirty pans being stored with clean ones
There was also a dishwasher in need of repair
and cooked foods in the cooler without date markers

many businesses faced unprecedented challenges
But for one mother-daughter team in Madison
the uncertainty was the catalyst for a new and successful venture
At the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020
Bailey Nichols and her teenage daughter Alexis found themselves looking for a meaningful way to stay busy while stuck at home
Bailey and Alexis wanted to provide something to bring a smile to people’s faces during the stressful COVID-19 isolation
Having lived in Europe before relocating to Madison
both Bailey and Alexis had a deep appreciation for authentic Belgian Liege Waffles—both in flavor and appearance
they began experimenting with different recipes
perfecting the flavor and texture until they had it just right
The waffles quickly became a hit with anyone who tried them
Bailey then guided Alexis through the process of obtaining the necessary business licenses, permits, and tax ID. That’s when Wafel-Bitte (which translates to “Waffle Please”) was officially born
Air Force with an additional 28 years in federal law enforcement
she started the private investigation firm Gemini Investigations
She praised The Catalyst Center for Business & Entrepreneurship and the Small Business Development Center at UAH for helping support and launch her businesses
“The Catalyst Center in Huntsville and the SBDC want you to succeed, and they have a lot of resources to help small businesses grow,” Bailey said.
Her motivation to start a business with Alexis stemmed from more than a love for Belgian waffles
She wanted to teach Alexis the value of entrepreneurship and to pass down valuable business skills before Alexis left for her own Air Force career
“Equipping our children with essential life skills is crucial for their future success,” said Bailey
“Teaching them how to start a business can unlock limitless potential
setting them on a path to achieve extraordinary success.”
Wafel-Bitte’s journey began in September 2020 when the duo started selling their homemade Belgian Liege waffles at local farmers’ markets
bringing the taste of Belgium’s finest street food to the heart of Alabama
obtaining a food manufacturer license and transitioning to producing Belgian Liege waffle mix
the business expanded to an online store and began selling on Amazon
Wafel-Bitte products are available in states ranging from Nebraska to Florida
you can find their waffles and waffle mixes at various local businesses
hot Wafel-Bitte waffles are also served at several local food spots
including High Point Market in Decatur and Lux Bru in Madison
but the bond with her mother and their shared passion for the business continues to grow
having already retired from government service
both with her marketing expertise and as a source of inspiration for the company
With the growth of their online presence and distribution across multiple states
Bailey and Alexis are excited about the future of Wafel-Bitte and that with each bite of a Wafel-Bitte waffle
“We can’t wait to bring the taste of Belgium to your kitchen,” Bailey said
“Our goal is to make Wafel-Bitte a beloved product across the United States
and we truly appreciate every one of our customers.”

Who says you need an ocean to celebrate the Navy

Sailors in crisp Navy Whites visited the clinic to greet Veterans

While the event honored the Navy’s long legacy

comparing jobs (“What was your rate?”)
and feeling the powerful bonds across generations of service
This is just one example of how community partnerships
enrich the lives of the Veterans we serve — and remind all of us at VA why our work matters

a 22-mile path through the heart of the city
It’s not a new idea, but it’s one Huntsville planners hope to establish here. Like Atlanta’s 22-mile Beltline
the proposed Huntsville Beltline would reshape how residents interact with their city as well as play a crucial role in Huntsville’s infrastructure and long-term growth
Targeted stakeholder meetings will likely be held in late 2025
“With the city’s increasing population and demand for better infrastructure
this project will not only improve mobility but also contribute to Huntsville’s vision for future growth,” Mayor Tommy Battle said
Huntsville residents will have the chance to shape a transformative initiative that will impact our city for years to come
Two people sit and enjoy the view of Atlanta’s skyline on the Beltline
The overall goal of the project is to narrow the gap between the pedestrian access and redevelopment corridor (PARC) near downtown and the Meek Greenway near the campus of Alabama A&M University
the City entered into an agreement with Atlanta-based Lord Aeck Sargent Inc
to develop a master plan for the Huntsville Beltline
It will enhance Huntsville’s economy by creating development opportunities between Memorial Parkway and the greenway
Another goal is to create new alternate transportation options between downtown and Alabama A&M
“It will link over two dozen neighborhoods across the city
transportation and economic growth,” said Dennis Madsen
Huntsville’s Manager of Urban & Long-Range Planning
foster community interaction and provide a hub for outdoor activities and events.”
Electric scooters are common along Atlanta’s Beltline
who worked at a prominent design firm in Atlanta
saw firsthand how that project changed that city’s landscape
He described it as a model for urban transformation
and one he believes Huntsville will embrace
aiming to replicate the successes seen in Atlanta,” he said
we will gather input from residents and businesses
ensuring the project meets the needs and desires of the community.”
There’s also a sustainability piece to consider
the greenway will improve air quality and help mitigate the urban heat island effect by adding more green space
The increased potential for arts and culture initiatives is another aspect of the project
“Just as the Atlanta Beltline hosts events like the Lantern Parade
Huntsville could create its own community-driven events that celebrate creativity and diversity,” Madsen said
it could become a cultural corridor that adds vibrancy and civic pride to Huntsville.”

is currently grappling with several significant legal challenges that cast a shadow over its workforce
These lawsuits—some ongoing and others settled—raise pressing questions about corporate governance
particularly as it undergoes a major restructuring that has led to mass layoffs

Retaliation Lawsuit: A Victory for Employee Rights
A federal judge ruled in favor of the employee, ordering Boeing to pay $75,000 in non-economic damages. The ruling highlights Boeing’s responsibility to foster a workplace where employees can voice concerns without fear. While the case may be closed, the outcome serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting workers’ rights—especially in high-pressure industries where employees may hesitate to speak out. [6]
this case is particularly relevant as the company navigates a period of significant layoffs
Many employees may feel vulnerable during such transitions
and this case reinforces the need for Boeing to treat workers fairly and respectfully
“I don’t know what I’m going to do now that I’m out of work
I guess—because of the job market,” said a former Boeing employee who wished to remain anonymous in an interview with the Huntsville Business Journal
“I feel like I can’t say very much because of how they [Boeing] have treated former employees in the past

Settlements with Former Employees: Corporate Accountability
many employees question the company’s priorities
The stark contrast between executive pay and the treatment of laid-off workers has drawn sharp criticism
