A Takoma Park art studio for children and adults is opening a second location in Hyattsville
Located at 4214 Gallatin St., in the former CAMPspace location across the street from the Masonic Lodge, The Loft offers art classes for preschoolers through tweens and adults
The classes typically meet weekly for six weeks and range from drawing to printing to sculpture and knitting
Courses for pre-schoolers meet during the day
while those for tweens tend to meet in the early evening
There are also BYOB nighttime classes for adults to get help with their own projects and experiment with new materials as well as onetime events on more complicated subjects such as gel plate printing or tapestry weaving
a neighborhood art space in Capitol Hill aimed at young children
it reopened as The Loft Collective in 2021 with expanded offerings for older students

I grew up in Hyattsville 1950s through mid-1970s
This space is also the former location of Harvey Dairy back in the 1930s
My father was the plant manager and made his career with the dairy until they closed their Brentwood plant in 1976
My older siblings and myself attended the old Gallatin Primary School across the street
So sad that sweet school burned years ago but such a nice use of the space with park and playground
I have a photo of my father standing in front of this building taken in the early 1930s

(7News) — Maryland Natural Resources Police officers seized two live American alligators from a Hyattsville
apartment after receiving a report about the illegal animals
when authorities were alerted to the presence of the alligators
Officials said a 28-year-old man from Washington
was charged with illegal importation and possession of the two animals
Both alligators were seized and relocated to wildlife education centers
The man also faces up to $2,000 in fines if convicted
American alligators are illegal to own in Maryland without proper permits, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources
WASHINGTON (7News) — A Guatemalan man was arrested by the U.S
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after he was charged in connection with the death of his brother in Prince George's County
Prince George's County Police Department (PGPD) officials arrived at the 500 block of Shady Glen Drive at 11:30 p.m
to investigate reports of a physical fight
32-year-old Rene Pop-Chub pushed his brother
Cristantos hit his head during the fall and died
Pop-Chub reentered the United States for a third time on an unknown date
PGPD officials arrested Pop-Chub following the fight on Aug
ICE Baltimore lodged an immigration detainer with the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections (PGCDC) on Oct
The agency added that PGCDC declined to honor ICE’s immigration detainer and released Pop-Chub from custody on April 8
Pop-Chub's next court date was scheduled for April 16 to decide whether or not he would be detained before a bail hearing
ICE Baltimore arrested Pop-Chub in Hyattsville
and issued him a notice of intent to reinstate a prior order of removal
Pop-Chub has been transferred to the custody of the U.S
"We want to be clear: we called ICE upon Mr
Pop-Chub's release because he had a prior conviction for involuntary manslaughter
Contrary to any suggestion that ICE was denied access — an ICE agent was on-site the day of Mr
Pop-Chub’s release and did communicate with PGCDOC staff
"Prince George’s County remains committed to working with our federal partners within the bounds of the law and in a manner that protects the constitutional rights of all individuals in our custody."
Prince George’s County Council voted unanimously to bar all county agencies from working with ICE unless individuals in question were faced with criminal warrants
Prince George's County Department of Police officially codified its policy of only working with U.S
Immigration and Customs Enforcement if an individual is wanted on a criminal immigration warrant or in connection with certain suspected crimes
This decision came after then-Police Chief Hank Stawinski told The Washington Post that officers were alerting federal agencies about an individual's immigration status after they were stopped for non-criminal matters
One example the Post cites was an undocumented woman who was placed in deportation proceedings after she was rear-ended in Hyattsville in 2019
The White House Office of Communications released the following statement on the case:
"So-called “sanctuary” jurisdictions endanger the lives of the Americans who live there
"The latest example comes in Prince George’s County
then released back onto the streets despite an ICE immigration detainer request — a result of the county’s insane “sanctuary” policies
ICE eventually arrested the illegal immigrant and he’ll soon be on his way back to Guatemala
"The negligence of leftist politicians is putting lives at risk
(7News) — A leaking propane tank near downtown Hyattsville
briefly caused lane closures and a response from Prince George's County hazmat crews
Officials said the leaking 250-gallon tank near the alternate Route 1 bridge caused lane closures between Baltimore Avenue and Charles Armentrout Drive that lasted until roughly 10:30 p.m
State environmental officials and Prince George's County officials responded to the scene
The Route 1 corridor has two artsy new bus shelters
The two new shelters in Hyattsville’s arts district feature a swooping roofline and Art Nouveau-inspired curved metal framework
They are located on Jefferson Street next to the Armory building and on Baltimore Avenue in front of the new Canvas Apartments.
The shelters were paid for with a $50,000 public art commission from the Hyattsville Community Development Corp. in partnership with Urban Investment Partners
the developer behind the Canvas development
including three seating options: a space for a wheelchair
(This is a nicer version of what is called “hostile architecture,” because the benches are designed to make it hard for a homeless person to sleep on them.)

That’s a whole college degree used on something that doesn’t even protect from wind or seat more than a few people
but it’s not practical—and definitely not commuter-friendly

(7News) — More than a dozen workers with Martz Gold Line began a strike Thursday at 4 a.m.
citing what they call unfair labor practices and bad-faith bargaining by the company during ongoing contract negotiations
The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 689
mechanics and service technicians at Martz
announced the strike in a statement early Thursday morning
ATU Local 689 said Martz has pushed wage proposals that would leave employees further behind compared to others in the transit industry
Costa added that workers are “fed up with the disrespect” and said the strike is about demanding fair treatment for essential employees
“This is about securing a future where every transit worker is valued
and treated with the dignity they deserve for the service they provide every single day
It’s time for Martz to give these workers a contract that treats them like the heroes they are,” Costa said
Contract negotiations began in December 2024
The union said workers have been on an expired contract since Jan
Martz workers overwhelmingly voted to reject the company’s last offer
the two sides met to continue negotiations for the first time since the vote
but union leaders said Martz refused to budge from its rejected offer
while the union made adjustments in hopes of reaching a deal
Martz Gold Line operates fixed-route commuter bus service
including multiple Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) routes
7News has reached out to the MTA and Martz Gold Line for a statement regarding the strike

according to a statement early Thursday morning
19 incident on the 6100 block of Queens Chapel Road showed Corporal Kelly Hernandez pulling the driver out of the vehicle after the driver said their leg was broken
Police were initially called for reports of a vehicle rollover
The video also showed massive flames pouring out of the front engine compartment of the vehicle during the rescue
"This is the type of incident officers face while protecting our community," Hyattsville police officials said in a statement
Hernandez's quick thinking and the other first responders who showed up to assist."

But Motojesi also aims high, building out a meat department and having fufu made in Nigeria shipped overnight once or twice a week for immigrants who think the sticky dough dish just doesn’t taste the same here
and Motojesi says he’s seeing steady business from African immigrants who have long said they wanted a store that catered to their tastes as well as shoppers passing by who grab a soda or some chips

(7News) — A 15-year-old girl was injured in a drive-by shooting Thursday evening in Hyattsville
sources and witnesses told 7News Maryland Bureau Chief Brad Bell
According to the Prince George's County Police Department
officers responded to the 5800 block of Chillumgate Road
where they found the girl inside a residence suffering from gunshot wounds
She was taken to a local hospital in stable condition
that more than 30 shots were fired in two bursts
targeting a window in the small brick home
A man who identified himself as the victim's brother described the attack as terrifying
He said the girl was eating dinner on a couch when the shooting began
She was grazed in the head and has since been released from the hospital
Police have leads and are reviewing video footage
They do not believe the girl was an intended target

Officials said the flag was stolen overnight in the 5500 block of 38th Avenue on Jan

according to the Prince George's County Police Department
Officials said officers responded to a shooting in the 5800 block of Chillumgate Road
officers found a girl inside a residence suffering from gunshot wounds
The girl was taken to a local hospital in stable condition

who plans to restore the exterior while converting the inside to a mixed-use development

which has seen its membership decline in recent years
Kulp has experience with adaptive reuse and a historic preservation designation was secured as a condition of the sale

Customs and Border Protection at the Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville
2023 and he was issued to appear before an immigration judge
he admitted that he served in the Nicaraguan army between 1995-1996
Reyes also admitted to firing an AK-47 into a crowd of civilians
and relocating to Mexico and providing material to support a cartel
He was then ordered to be removed from the United States to Nicaragua
“This arrest highlights exactly why ICE is vital to the safety of our nation,” said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Baltimore acting Field Office Director Matthew Elliston
admitted to his horrific past— massacring innocent people and later aiding a ruthless drug cartel in Mexico
His presence in the United States was a direct threat to public safety

Reyes currently remains in ICE custody as he awaits his removal

Maryland was connected to the sexual assault of a 91-year-old resident at a Hyattsville
according to Hyattsville police on Thursday
was in custody for a different incident but has since been accused of entering an assisted living facility in the 5800 block of Queens Chapel Road and assaulting a resident on Sept
a nurse spotted a man wearing all black run out of the patient's room and away from the facility without being caught
He was described as standing five-foot-11 and weighing roughly 160 pounds
The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment
Bonaventure will be charged with third and fourth-degree sex offenses and second-degree assault

Urban Investment Partners is working on a project that would deliver 285 apartments, 32,000 square feet of retail, and a pedestrian plaza with benches, water features, and outdoor dining to the 5300 block of Baltimore Avenue (map)
The new development is expected to deliver later this year
The Riverfront at West Hyattsville
A proposed development from Gilbane Development Company would deliver 750 units above 15,000 square feet of retail for the eight acres west of Ager Road and Lancer Drive (map)
The overall development has already incorporated improvements to the Anacostia River Northwest Branch Trail and will also deliver 4.5 acres of public parkland with an amphitheater.
Residences at the Six
Transwestern is now leasing Residences At The Six, an eight-story, 316-unit building at 6400 America Boulevard (map)
with 80 two-bedrooms and studios and one-bedrooms for the remainder.
A 529-unit development is on the boards at Adelphi and Toledo Roads (map), part of the Dewey property at Adelphi, Belcrest, and Toledo Roads (map)
Development at the site is also expected to produce some retail and additional townhouse-style units in partnership with Stanley Martin
Buildings 7 and 8 at The Station at Riverdale Park
These plans would add two apartment buildings with 625 units to the site where where the property abuts the CSX railroad tracks (map)
seven-story Building 7 would deliver 338 apartments
six-story Building 8 would have separate sections for senior living and market-rate units
Each would also have a six-story parking garage with up to 507 and 441 respective spaces
A restored Rhode Island Avenue streetcar would also be retrofit into 450 square feet of commercial space in a plaza near Building 7

(7News) — A former NFL player who has since become an award-winning chef and restaurateur was shot during an attempted robbery Tuesday night in Hyattsville
Hyattsville police reported two people - one man and one woman - were shot while returning from dinner
but did not share their names or conditions

Prince George's County Councilmember Wanika Fisher told 7News Tobias Dorzon was one of the victims
She said he was recovering from his injuries
and she was distraught after learning her constituent and friend had been shot
"I'm just so heartbroken and concerned
for Tobias' recovery," Fisher said
"I was just on my hands and knees praying that Tobias would be OK
Gun violence and violence in our communities is just unacceptable and disgusting."
He returned home to Prince George's County
Fisher said his success is only the tip of the iceberg as to why he has become an important leader in the community
"He employs Northwestern High School students in his restaurants
He makes sure his kitchen has Black and Brown chefs
Just six months ago, Fisher and her council colleagues honored Dorzon
he had just been named Chef of the Year by the Restaurant Association of Maryland
becoming the first from Prince George's County to earn the distinction
he talked about how important it was for him to return home
and come home to be able to give people in our county an opportunity to come back
to work," Dorzon said during the May ceremony
I'm here to continue to make the county better."
Hyattsville police said they are looking for five suspects
"I'm doing all that I can to support our Hyattsville Police Department to bring these perpetrators to justice and to support Tobias and his family at this time," Fisher said
7News asked Fisher if an incident like this
involving someone with such a high profile
"The reality for Prince George's County is gun laws are in Annapolis
We don't have the authority to ban certain things like D.C
I think it's really imperative for us to continue to advocate for that
as the council has done," Fisher said
"You have to get the illegal guns off the street
Illegal weapons come into my community from D.C.
It's not one local body that can fix that
That's why I fought so much with bonuses for our police department in this budget cycle
but it takes multiple levels of government to get these weapons off the street."

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials on Monday
ICE and the FBI took David Alejandro Orellana-Aleman
is wanted in his home country on charges of firearm possession

“The apprehension of David Alejandro Orellana-Aleman strikes a significant blow to the leadership and organization of the MS-13 terrorist organization,” said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations acting Field Office Director Matthew Elliston
“This arrest speaks volumes about the cooperation enjoyed between ICE and the FBI
We will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing illegal alien offenders from our communities.”
ICE described Orellana as a high-ranking leader who played a key role in the gang's operations by controlling "the operation of MS-13 cliques in the United States
Authorities said Orellana was first arrested in El Salvador on Dec
and charged as a documented member of MS-13
illegally before being arrested in Prince George’s County in December 2024 for driving without a license
FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge William J
DelBagno said the arrest makes Maryland safer
“Maryland is immediately safer because of this arrest
we took custody of one of the highest-ranking gang members in the United States,” said DelBagno
“David Alejandro Orellana-Aleman is no longer in his alleged position of power directing violence

An award-winning apartment building has opened in West Hyattsville
Located at 5685 Little Branch Run near the Metro station, Sovren features 293 apartments
including 147 units reserved for residents earning at or below 80% of the area median income
The five-story building also has 2,500 square feet of retail space and a parking garage with 298 spaces decorated with a mural by Route 1 native Miss Chelove
In March, the development won Best Residential Development from the Washington Business Journal, which praised its “public art, sustainable Green Building-certification, transit-oriented and affordable housing.” (Atworth in College Park was a runner-up.)

(7News) — Two people are wanted after an attempted armed robbery of a Brinks armored truck Tuesday morning in Hyattsville
The Hyattsville Police Department said officers responded to the 5500 block of Baltimore Avenue where two armed suspects approached the vehicle before fleeing the scene in a minivan-style car
police said the driver of the armored vehicle discharged his firearm at the suspects
It is not yet known if either suspect was injured in the exchange
but police said that the driver was not injured

Power and water restored at Vie Towers in Hyattsville after major outage repairby 7News Staff
(7News) — Power and water have been fully restored at Vie Towers after Hyattsville officials deemed the student housing complex unfit for human habitation
sources confirmed to 7News Wednesday morning
Vie Towers management announced that full power was reestablished at 10 p.m
after repairs to the main electrical panel were completed
"Our teams have worked around the clock to restore full functionality
We remain fully committed to addressing the needs of our residents and will continue to have onsite maintenance
housekeeping and guest experience teams available to provide further assistance
We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our residents throughout this process," a statement from the source stated
experienced a significant power surge Sunday night that damaged the main electrical panel
Hyattsville's code compliance team made the discovery and determined it was not suitable for residents at the time
7News spoke to City of Hyattsville spokesperson Cindy Zork who said management informed the city the repairs would be made within 48 hours and that they were waiting on a part to complete them
"The city does not mandate that people need to leave the property
but they post the notice so that people are aware and also to encourage the building management to address the issue as soon as possible," said Zork
Tobias Dorzon, a former NFL player turned chef and restaurateur, was one of two people shot Tuesday night during a robbery in Prince George’s County
“Such a horrible act couldn’t have happened to a better person
I am sending my deepest sympathies to him and the second victim
We have no place for this kind of senseless violence in our district or our county,” county Council member Wanika Fisher said in a statement
Hyattsville police said the shooting happened around 10 p.m

Police Chief Jarod Towers said four suspects then got out of another vehicle that was being driven by a fifth suspect and opened fire on Dorzon and the woman

The suspects then approached the victim and took personal effects from him

Towers called the shooting a “tragic
“This is not tolerated here in the city of Hyattsville
It’s not tolerated anywhere in Prince George’s County or the region.” Towers said
