Beach By  //  April 11 FLORIDA – City of Melbourne officials issued a Boil Water Notice after E coli bacteria were found in a sample point at 1037 Ashley Avenue in Indian Harbour Beach on Thursday This Boil Water Notice affects all water customers served by the City of Melbourne ■ Unincorporated Brevard South of Pineda Causeway (Customers who live in unincorporated Brevard County located south of Pineda Causeway and receive a water bill from the City of Melbourne Suntree and Viera are served by the Cocoa water system – not Melbourne.) ■ West Melbourne is a wholesale customer of Melbourne coli bacteria were not found in any of the other sites sampled “We are issuing a boil water notice to all water customers out of an abundance of caution,” said a City of Melbourne spokesperson “Until required bacteriological testing is completed we recommend boiling tap water before consuming it to kill any potential contaminants Additional samples upstream and downstream of 1037 Ashley Avenue in Indian Harbour Beach have been collected and the City will inform residents when tests show no bacteria are present and you no longer need to boil your water “We anticipate resolving the problem within 48 hours of this notification,” said a City of Melbourne spokesperson Vigorous boiling for at least one full minute is the safest and most effective method of disinfection Fill a pot with cold water and start timing when steady streams of bubbles pop from the bottom of the pot Water must be adequately cooled before it can be used for washing or brushing teeth How does boiling water make it safe to drink Boiling water purifies it because disease-causing bacteria viruses or parasites will be destroyed by the heat Water from an alternative water source is the best option during a boil — A major beach renourishment project is soon wrapping up along Space Coast beaches to restore sand lost during Hurricanes Ian and Nicole It’s a part of the Brevard County Shore Protection Project which began in November 2023 Raymond Adamcik of Melbourne sees each day as he comes to his favorite beach spot There has been heavy equipment like dump trucks bringing in sand and excavators doling it out on the eroded area of the beach somewhere the beach is completely washed out,” Raymond said and it’s an 8-mile stretch of Indian Harbour Beach and Satellite Beach Sand is being stockpiled further south to distribute along the coastline Previous renourishment on south Brevard beaches was done by an ocean faring barge But here it must be trucked in to protect shoreline rock reefs the dune will be restored and the beach widened 30 more feet to levels seen prior to Nicole in 2022 Army Corps of Engineers is in charge of the nearly $50,000,000 replenishment project which will ultimately rehab Hamilton “Ham” Boone’s passing is a profound loss for Indian Harbour Beach and leadership will continue to inspire future generations Boots are never really appropriate for the beach Kudos are due to the City of Satellite Beach for listening to the people and taking action The beach boot experiment is no longer in fashion and come February beachgoers in Satellite Beach ― who do not pay for parking ― will be ticketed instead of having their car immobilized by a boot a boot is a heavy metal clamp that gets affixed to a car's tire not allowing it to move until a fine has been paid The program was instituted in 2023 to help the city offset some of the costs associated with maintenance and upkeep of its beaches without passing those costs to city residents But the program was unpopular with residents and beachgoers and was beset with problems some had trouble removing the device even after paying the fine and some beachgoers opted to start parking in private lots to avoid paying altogether Kudos are due to the City of Satellite Beach for listening to the people and taking action "Problems have arisen and we're trying to fix it," said Councilman Mark Boyd during a November council meeting when the issue was discussed The boots will go away and parking tickets will return Those who don't pay the fines will likely be unable to re-register their vehicles until the citations are paid More from Torres: Pam Bondi failed Brevard and Florida by turning blind eye toward justice | Torres Torres: The real reason why people are homeless may surprise you outgoing Councilman David Vigliotti said using the boot resulted in ruining someone's day or weekend who just wanted to go to the beach "We may take in less (money) but we'll be making the people happy here in Satellite Beach," he said when can beach-going scofflaws stop worrying about being booted The city council voted last month to do away with the boot system and a first reading of the new ordinance was read in the first week of December A second reading is scheduled for the council's Jan setting things in motion for a February 1st implementation of the new ticketing system according to City Manager Brittany Retherford The city now joins other nearby municipalities like Indialantic and Melbourne Beach who do not use a boot system to enforce beach parking and Indian harbour Beach which plans to the latest cities to agree to have their police officers train with U.S Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has pushed for all local governments to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. The three Central Florida cities each held meetings Tuesday night and discussed without debate how to comply with the new state laws The solution was to each sign an agreement with ICE under its 287(g) program. According to Indian Harbour Beach city documents this agreement allows its officers to complete a free 40-hour virtual training course to become certified to perform some immigration enforcement duties officers will be able to check if a person they encounter is also wanted by ICE Those officers will also be allowed to transport that person to an immigration detention center, according to city documents Indian Harbour Beach police Chief David Butler said his officers may not even be able to transport anyone to those centers The closest Immigration Detention Center is in Orange County “If there is no place for them then we can’t hold them,” Butler said “I know the sheriff is working on some things to help assist with that.” officers will transport the person to the county jail if they are being charged with state crimes some advocates have criticized the 287(g) program arguing that it does not work and it is used to target people based on race Adriana Rivera, the communications director for the Florida Immigration Coalition, previously told News 6 cities and counties should reconsider signing agreements with ICE.    and they had to basically shut it down because they were infringing on the rights of people citizens who were racially profiled,” Rivera said “We’re seeing people who have no police backgrounds people who even have a legal status in the country being swept up by this hysteria that we’re living under.” All in all, the three cities are not the only ones having their officers train with ICE.
