A Tik Tok account producing a series of “Seattle serial killer on the loose” videos has lucked into a viral hit with a clip about two bodies found in 2016 and 2021 in Capitol Hill’s Interlaken Park
The information in the 16-second video is out of date
and ignores key findings and facts reported years ago by CHS
The video centers on two unsolved deaths in the park and claims to tie the cases together
The King County Medical Examiner says McKendrick was killed about a week before her body was found on the afternoon of Sunday
May 30th in a small stream below the park by a homeowner who called 911 about the sad discovery
It is not clear where McKendrick was killed
Police say the on-scene investigation yielded “no obvious information about the circumstance that led to the death” due to the condition of the body and the location in the area of the small
The site is near E Interlaken Blvd that winds through the park — a popular route for walkers and bicyclists that is closed to motor vehicles
The video spreading on Seattle social media this week claims a second woman’s body was found in mysterious circumstances in the park but leaves most of the details vague while including a photograph from CHS coverage of the story from eight years ago
In 2016
CHS reported on the discovery of human remains in Interlaken by a father visiting the site in the leafy park’s greenbelt where the body of his homeless son had been found five days earlier
The son, Jon LeBaron, 29, had struggled with drug addiction and homelessness for nearly eight years before he went missing
Police told LeBaron his son had likely been dead for two months when he was found on August 30th by two people who said they were hiking through the woods when they noticed the 29-year-old’s shoe
The body referred to in the video was found by LeBaron’s father as he searched for the site where Jon was found
The father found what appeared to be a human skull and an old camp site overgrown with ivy
according to the police report on the investigation
and scrambled back up to the streets above Interlaken to call police
Arriving officers found skeletal remains and cordoned off the area for a death investigation
the skull and any skeletal remains were not “positioned” to mock police and the body was not female
The medical examiner later determined that the remains found that late summer in Interlaken were those of an adult white male between the ages of 25 to 50
He was found near a living site along with “multiple pairs of shoes” that ranged in size from 9.5 to 13
The investigation also identified a defect in the bone above the man’s left temple
“possibly an old surgical shunt.”
Case #16-1753 remains part of the King County Medical Examiner’s roster of unidentified remains
Many of those involve people living unhoused
The case of Necia “Q” McKendrick-Mendez, meanwhile, is also going cold along with a handful of killings like hers in recent years with shared factors: Homeless. Gay. Vulnerable
While the viral video is stirring up fright
the real concerns about the cases it exploits reflect the city’s challenges around homelessness

The Interlaken Fire Burning near Twin Lakes is now 100% contained
The wildfire, which was caused by a campfire that was not properly extinguished, has been burning near the historic Interlaken Resort south of Leadville for almost two weeks
the fire was reportedly burning on 704 acres
which is equal to about ⅘ the area of New York City’s Central Park
About 80 fire personnel remain on scene, according to the Interlaken Fire Information Facebook page
Forest Service has closures in place for the burned area and some of the surrounding recreational areas
Summit Daily is embarking on a multiyear project to digitize its archives going back to 1989 and make them available to the public in partnership with the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection
The full project is expected to cost about $165,000
All donations made in 2023 will go directly toward this project

On my recent trip to Interlaken in Switzerland
I was thinking about all the people I know who would love this Alpine town in January but who would never think to go there because they’re not up for hurtling down a mountainside
Older people wary of breaking bones for example
or friends who never learned to ski as a child and aren’t about to start now
It was less about adrenalin and speed and more about slowing down and noticing more
I’d tell them to go there anyway. Skiing wasn’t part of my trip (I did that in Gstaad a few days earlier) but experiencing the beauty and charm of the Alps in winter most definitely was
the lights of the town reflecting on the lake
What a way to experience the wintery Alpine night
We disembarked halfway up, above the snowline, but below the point where it gets seriously cold. We were going snowshoeing with Outdoor Switzerland - and I imagined waddling awkwardly along with tennis rackets stuck to my feet
snowshoes have evolved since I saw them in Ladybird books as a kid
and easy to use - as long as you follow the two golden rules; don’t walk too close to the person in front (you’ll stand on their shoes)
I forgot rule number two for a moment and toppled back into deep snow
You’ve no reverse gear on snowshoes - there’s literally no going back
I really enjoyed advancing up the mountainside between snow-laded pine trees
You move much slower than you would on skis so you notice more
Animal tracks disappearing into the forest
The smooth clean lines of snowdrifts sculpted by wind
It was good exercise and a whole lot easier than trying to walk through deep snow in normal hiking boots
that I was thinking of buying some for the few weeks each year when Kinder Scout is covered in snow
I described it to her as a big hill rather than a mountain
She laughed and said they’re all hills in England to us
On the way back down we crossed a frozen lake where men were fishing through holes in the ice
Only my new generation snowshoes said otherwise
The next morning we took to the lake again, not on skates but in kayaks, with Phoebe from High Tide Kayaking School
Lake Brienz is the higher of the two Interlaken lakes
and is a different colour to the lower Lake Thun
The difference in shade is because it collects silt that flows down from the mountains
On the day we went it was a deep jade against the low
whispy white clouds and russet shores.
Kayaking along its banks was a very serene way to get immersed in nature
and the sense of space and calm will stay with me
it was less about adrenalin and speed and more about slowing down and noticing more
Interlaken and its wild and beautiful landscapes feel like they’re in another world

The pedestrian and bicycling-only curves of E Interlaken Blvd will be filled with thousands of runners
and don’t give up you can do it walkers as the Seattle Marathon passes across the north slope of Capitol Hill Sunday morning
The Seattle Department of Transportation says there will be trail and street closures across the route including SR-99
Be prepared for delays along 24th Ave E where the route crosses the artery
The full marathon’s official start time is 7 AM
Many participants won’t arrive in Interlaken until noon
Around 15,000 participants are expected across the day’s events including the half and full marathon
there were more than 1.700 runners and walkers who finished
Times ranged up to 18 minutes per mile for the slowest having the most fun-est runners
In 2019
marathon organizers re-routed the course away from Interlaken as part of moves needed to avoid light rail construction on the I-90 bridge and flatten the course
After the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 race
organizers finally restored the Interlaken portion of the run for the race’s 2022 edition
Crowds gather on the northern fringes of Capitol Hill to mark mile 22.5 of the race with an annual final boost of cheering and enthusiasm

— A newly released flyover video of the Interlaken Fire shows the success of the firefighting effort around the historic structures in the Twin Lakes area
The Interlake Fire burning on the south side of Twin Lakes Reservoir near the town of Twin Lakes is 15% contained
and firefighters expect additional containment in the coming days
fire officials said during a public meeting Saturday morning
The fire was first reported on Tuesday and had grown to 592 acres as of Saturday morning. It originated from an abandoned campfire about 60 yards from the Interlaken trail in Lake County
Fire crews took advantage of Friday's cooler weather
constructing additional fire lines and making significant progress in containing the fire
firefighters will continue to improve and secure these lines
and helicopters will bring “sling loads” of water pumps and hoses to assist with those efforts
No structures have been lost and the Interlaken historic buildings have remained protected amid the wildfire
Flyover video of the Interlaken Fire released Saturday shows just how close the blaze got to those structures:
Pre-evacuation notices have been issued for the Lost Canyon (CR 30) and Chafee County areas north of CR 390 to the county line
The Forest Service on Friday closed the following areas:
A 23-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle accident Wednesday afternoon on County Road 139
according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office
Deputies responded to the area of County Road 139 and Hall Road around 3 p.m
for a report of a personal injury accident
Despite life-saving efforts from first responders
Investigators determined that Wheeler had been traveling westbound when his motorcycle veered off the north shoulder of the road and collided with a parked pickup truck in a driveway
A preliminary investigation suggests that speed and high wind gusts were contributing factors
with members of the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division interviewing witnesses and reconstructing the crash
County Road 139 was closed for about three hours while authorities worked the scene
Emergency responders from South Seneca Ambulance
and the Seneca County Crisis Team assisted at the scene

Lucas sparked a wine empire more than 50 years ago when she and her family moved from Long Island to a 68-acre farm in Interlaken
but she leaves behind a great grape legacy in the Finger Lakes with the family-owned Lucas Vineyards and her work toward founding the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail
she was raised with no agricultural experience according to her son-in-law
Jeff Houck who spoke with The Ithaca Journal on Tuesday
"My late father-in-law was a tugboat captain
so a lot of the work with the winery was Ruth," he said
Building a wine trailTo those visiting today
it might seem hard to imagine the Finger Lakes region without its dozens of surrounding wineries and vineyards
but Lucas originally planned to sell grapes from what would become Lucas Vineyards to wineries in Hammondsport as wine companies like Taylor and Whitmer were cutting contracts with local growers
"New York State passed a law that allowed small farm wineries to produce and sell their own wine
and that was how they started Lucas Vineyards," Houck said
Ruth Lucas worked with a handful of other wine entrepreneurs including Mary Plane of what is now Cayuga Ridge Estates to co-found the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail creating effective business models for small vineyards and wineries in the area
"The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail isn’t just the first organized wine trail in the Finger Lakes — it’s the first in the entire country
its impact on local tourism has been huge," Wine Trail Executive Director Katherine Chase said Thursday
Six Mile Creek and Long Point had joined Cayuga Ridge
offering a wide variety of wines in close proximity
the trail encompasses 12 vineyards which all began as small grape growers - much like Lucas Vineyards which veered to wine sales in the mid-1970s as the national grape market tanked
"Wine tourism brings in millions of dollars every year
and the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail plays a big role in that," Chase said
"People aren’t just visiting wineries—they’re staying in hotels
all of which help fuel the local economy."
Chase called Lucas a pioneer and force for good in the Finger Lakes wine industry
"She helped shape what the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail is today
laying the groundwork not just for Lucas Vineyards - the first winery on Cayuga Lake - but for an entire community of wineries to thrive
She had a vision for what this region could become
we’re now a nationally recognized wine destination."
and Stephanie Lucas Houck; six grandchildren
and Zachary Lucas; two great grandchildren
Ruth was preceded in death by two brothers
Eugene and Robert Lewis; and a brother-in-law
The family will be present to receive family and friends from 4-7 p.m
Prayers of committal will follow at Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken

A wildfire that ignited Tuesday near the Twin Lakes Recreation Area was likely sparked by an abandoned campfire
The Interlaken fire grew to about three-quarters of a square mile by late Wednesday. The fire is burning on the south side of Twin Lakes Reservoir near the Twin Lakes Historic District, 20 miles south of Leadville, U.S. Forest Service spokesperson Shawna Graves said in a statement
but a few communities were ordered to evacuate and authorities warned other residents in the area to be ready to leave if the wildfire grows or conditions worsen
In a briefing with fire crews, an investigator with the U.S. Forest Service said the wildfire was likely sparked by an improperly extinguished campfire found near the Interlaken Trail, according to an update from the Park County Sheriff’s Office
Investigators said they do not have any leads on who abandoned the campfire
which appeared to have been deserted several days before the wildfire was reported
The wildfire is burning in forested areas filled with dead trees and produced heavy smoke Wednesday, which prompted an alert from state health authorities
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment warned people in southern Lake County and northern Chaffee County — especially the very young

About 135 firefighters from multiple agencies are working to control the fire
Crews worked throughout the day to control the blaze on the ground and used helicopters and other aircraft to drop water and retardant on the fire

It has been three years since Necia “Q” McKendrick-Mendez was murdered and her body left to rot hidden in a Capitol Hill park for a week
The killing was a street crime and will likely stay that way
Seattle Police provided no updates to CHS on its investigation despite multiple inquiries to the department’s public information office over recent weeks on the three-year anniversary of the discovery of McKendrick-Mendez’s body next to a stream in Interlaken Park
police say the on-scene investigation yielded “no obvious information about the circumstances that led to the death” due to the condition of the body and the location in the area of the small
Investigators determined the woman died of “multiple blunt force injuries” around May 23rd
McKendrick-Mendez’s family says they
A family picture including a young Necia shared with CHS
“Can I get an update on my sister’s case
Are you still the person to contact?,” reads one desperate email from a sister of the victim to one of the detectives on the case
2023 on the second anniversary of McKendrick-Mendez’s murder — an annual check-in
Texas family said the 45-year-old artist who went by Q spent much of her time selling art on the street on Broadway near Dick’s Drive-in
family members tried to connect with the crowd of friends and acquaintances Q had gotten to know along Broadway to try to find out more about what had happened to their loved one
and people on the edges of those communities including community outreach workers and street preachers who knew McKendrick-Mendez
They also heard frightening details about a man Q had fallen in with and reports of his violent and controlling ways
One family member says she heard Q was going through a “street divorce” and was about to gain access to housing when she disappeared
She was last reported in her regular areas of the neighborhood in late April
The medical examiner determined she was murdered around May 23
A homeowner near Interlaken discovered Q’s body the afternoon of Sunday
who was known by many as ‘Queen’ and ‘Q’ was spent time on Broadway
especially in the area of Dick’s Burgers,” the SPD post reads
producing and selling artwork on the street.”
she created and curated her most beloved and favorite creations- her three wonderful children.”
As for the wait for McKendrick-Mendez’s case to finally be solved to provide answers and closure — and
why is our Seattle Police Department so rotten
We keep making payouts for their bad behavior
the family of a murder victim is being ignored
Because the city leaders tied police hands so much all the good cops left
Sounds then like it would be a good idea to abolish this piece of shit department
Are city leaders telling good detectives they could pistol whip people who might know something
Anyone come forward willing to make a statement or testify
Without cooperation and forensic evidence there’s unlikely much they can do…
you were part of the contingent that wanted to defund police 50%
You were a vocal supporter of Kshama Sawant
a noted enemy of police (until someone threw poop in her yard
then she wanted special guard surveillance posted at her house!)
To sum up: you and your Socialist Breathren have loudly demanded we defund or disband (!) SPD for years
Harrell has been combating the morale crisis at SPD that your leadership (?) has had a hand in causing
Perhaps you have done enough for Seattle and should take a seat
and the rest of the non-Progressives have been working hard to fix the damage you and your ACAB Army helped to create in 2020
you could fund SPD if you sold all this stew
These “defund” losers are the ultimate FAFO cadre
They’ll keep banging the drum until the stray bullet from the thrice catch and released gang member hits them or a loved one
If your eyes are open and you actually live
reality should be punching you in the face every moment of every day
The socialist paradise you have created is right in front of us
pols and citizens who haven’t given up but I am sick of the dead ideologies continually speaking up
y’all are gripping so hard and its a relief you housebound delusional grumps rely on the cops to do the anti-communist work you dream of
Crack squad you’ve tasked with your defense
Progressives have yet to realize that D3 has turned on your views and politics
Dear Leader Sawant isn’t around to save you anymore
you’re more attached to Sawant than I ever was
currently evidenced by her living rent free to this very day in your dome
Bet you will still be posting variants of this 4 years from now
and the rest of the non-progressives” actually done
Walked around giving lip service to making the scary homeless go away
Reached out to Capitol Hill small businesses and worked to rebuild the damage caused when Sawant was in power
I’ve gotten email replies from Hollingsworth or her staff that addressed my specific questions
All Dear Leader of Our Revolution ever sent was a form letter boilerplate email babbling about “The Ruling Class” and then asking for donations to the Socialist Alternative
Sometimes despite people’s best efforts murder cases will go cold
I realize this is an understandably unsatisfying outcome
The best outcome we may ever achieve is to learn from this case and strive harder to protect our most vulnerable
I’m not optimistic that will happen either

10 a.m.: The Interlaken Fire near Twin Lakes has burned more than 700 acres and is at 86% containment
The jump in the fire’s size is being attributed to a more accurate assessment that was calculated by a fly over and due to the fire’s spread on the northern boundary as the fire nears the Colorado Trail by the lake
“This area of fire remains uncontrollable,” the release states
Crews say smoke was more visible yesterday because pockets of unburnt fuel heated and burned throughout the day
but firefighters dropped water on those areas to cool them down
firefighters will continue to improve the depth of containment lines by using hoses to extinguish heat near the perimeter of the fire,” the release states
“Firefighters in the North End (DIV A) are protecting trails to limit impact and preserve trees as the fire retreats to the lakeshore.”
1:20 p.m.: Firefighters were still battling the Interlaken Fire near Twin Lakes on Sunday
according to a press release issued Sunday morning by the Type III Incident Management Team handling the response to the wildfire
The release states that firefighters “had a very productive day” on the fireline Saturday due to lower fire intensity on the perimeter
Firefighters received assistance from helicopters that flew water pumps and hoses to the fireline
which allowed firefighters easier access to water on the western and northern sides of the fire
On the southern and southeastern sides of the fire
firefighters worked Saturday to establish hand line hoses to extinguish heat near the fire’s perimeter
Containment on Saturday increased to 45% on the western and northern ends of the fire
and pre-evacuation orders were lifted at 7 p.m
firefighters planned to continue working at the fire’s perimeter to extinguish heat
Other crews were also set to walk outside the fire’s perimeter to check for smoldering heat
while chainsaw crews work to remove hazardous trees along nearby trail systems in the burn area
Critical fire conditions – warm temperatures
low humidity and strong winds – are expected to persist on Monday
Investigators said last week the human-caused wildfire originated from a campfire that was not extinguished properly and was left unattended
officials say 256 personnel were battling the flames
Saturday, June 15, 2 p.m.: Containment of the Interlaken Fire near Twin Lakes had reached 15% as of early Saturday afternoon, June 15, according to the U.S. Forest Service
A press release was issued Saturday morning by the Type III Incident Management Team handling the response to the fire through the Interlaken Fire Information Facebook page
277 personnel were on scene battling the blaze as of Saturday morning
The release states that firefighters “took advantage of the cooler weather” Friday to make continued progress building a fireline at the edge of the wildfire
the fire was progressing slowly towards the Interlaken Trail Saturday morning
and firefighters planned to use the trail as a fireline
Firefighters had completed a direct fireline along the entire southwestern edge of the fire and planned to work to improve and secure the line Saturday
aided by helicopters outfitted with water pumps and hoses
firefighters were set to continue building direct handline at the edge of the fire
progressed to the edge of a prescribed burn that took place in 2018
The prescribed burn area is acting as a holding feature in the east
slowing and even stopping the progress of the wildfire and giving firefighters direct access to the area
Public health impacts from smoke were minimal near the Interlaken Fire as of Saturday morning
wind and atmospheric mixing were expected to loft smoke away from the surface Saturday
windy conditions and a drop in humidity levels
which “could create critical fire weather conditions,” according to the release
A Temporary Flight Restriction is also in effect over the fire area due to the possibility of unrelated flights impeding firefighting efforts
9 a.m.: The Interlaken Fire near Twin Lakes continues to burn on an estimated 585 acres — just less than a square mile — but was 5% contained as of Friday morning
Investigators said the human-caused wildfire originated from a campfire that was not extinguished properly and was left unattended
officials say 214 personnel were battling the flames
a community meeting about the Interlaken Fire is scheduled at 10 a.m
A video will be uploaded to the Interlaken Fire Information Facebook page following the meeting
Firefighters worked into the night Thursday
to protect historic structures near the Interlaken Resort as fire activity picked up near the northwest corner of the wildfire
Fire managers determined late Thursday that there is now about 5% containment along the northwestern edge of the fire
the terrain is steep and full of dead and downed lodgepole pines
The fire is reportedly moving slowly through the underbrush in this area
which firefighters plan to use as a fireline
crews are building a direct fireline and plan to connect it to a local roadway
More crews are expected to arrive in this area Friday to help construct the fireline
Firefighting crews are also reportedly gathering information on the location of structures in private land near the southwest edge of the fire
are assisting firefighters by using boats to bring supplies across the lake to the fire area
More helicopters are also expected to arrive at the fire with two Type 1
two Type 2 and one Type 3 helicopter planning to assist at the Interlaken Fire on Friday
Trails in and around the historic Interlaken Resort are closed due to the fire
and a temporary flight restriction is in place over the fire as operation of drones or other aircraft will interfere with firefighting efforts
Government agencies throughout Colorado continue to remind residents and visitors of the importance of proper fire safety
including fully dowsing all campfires until they are cool to the touch

Tricky conditions at the start of the week gave way to better and better racing weather as the week went on

The week started with a 32km task set in “unpromising” grey
Things got more hopeful as window-closed time approached

120km and 111km in terrain that Seb Ospina described as “one of the most beautiful racing arenas on the planet.” There is a reason he has chosen to live here for the last decade
