NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Manhattan Softball was twice on the short end of pitching duels on Friday, as the Jaspers lost both games to Iona by final margins of 1-0 and 2-1. Despite the tough results, Karissa Spring and Sophia Kiseloski had good showings on the mound in back-to-back starts for the Jaspers
Center fielder Brianna Estevez recorded the first hit of the game in the fourth inning
but was erased from the base paths after being caught stealing second
Brianna Fischer staked out a 1-0 lead for Iona on a home run to center field
Iona pitcher Allison Hoppe retired the next eight Manhattan batters
Hoppe only needed four batters to retire the side in the seventh to close out the win
Iona would drive in both of its runs on sacrifice flies
coming in the first inning and later in the fifth

Niagara started off game one getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Breanna Delaney singled up the middle to plate Hailey Cenname. The Purple Eagles doubled their lead in the third with Delaney getting her second RBI of the contest, bringing home CJ Haney
The Gaels took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning
highlighted by a two-RBI ground rule double that gave Iona the lead
The Gaels tacked on one insurance run in the sixth with an RBI triple
Sage Jackson got the start in the circle for the Purple and White
Iona got off to a quick start in the nightcap
plating six runs in the bottom of the first inning

Withers and Painter tied for a team high of three points in the outing

On the first pitch of the game, starting pitcher Brad Grasser induced a groundout back to the mound from Damian Rodriguez
setting him up for a 15-pitch scoreless first frame
With two outs in the bottom of the first, right fielder Aidan Taclas was hit by a pitch, and then stole second with Ryan Lordier at the plate
The Jaspers' threat was terminated on a groundout to second from Lordier
Grasser stayed efficient on the mound in the second
Andreaus Lewis and Colin Basehore started off the bottom of the second with singles and Lewis stopped at second
setting the stage for a sacrifice fly from Mayer which scored Lewis
Then, Trevor Hansen wasted no time driving home Basehore from third on a long RBI double off the left field wall
getting two outs on two pitches before getting his second strikeout to end the frame
Iona got on the board in the fourth thanks to a trio of throwing errors from the Jaspers
hanging an eight-spot on the Jaspers and ending Grasser's day
The big blast came on a grand slam from Iona first baseman James Kemp
With Braedon Romero taking over on the bump
pushing four more runs across the board for Iona

Iona University named Dan Geriot its new men's basketball coach on March 20 and also announced its intent to name the first general manager in program history
Geriot was in his first season with the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans and had spent the previous nine in various coaching roles with the Cleveland Cavaliers
including his last two as an assistant coach and director of player development
Geriot was head coach of the NBA G League's Canton Charge from 2021-22 as part of his responsibilities with the Cavs
"I am grateful for this opportunity and excited to get to work," Geriot said in a news release
"Iona has a strong basketball tradition and history of success
Our goal is to build a team that plays hard
The university said a formal press conference to introduce Geriot will be held on the campus in New Rochelle in the coming weeks
noted the changing landscape of college basketball over the last couple of years as a reason why Iona needed "different orientation and structure" to sustain success
"Dan Geriot's experience fits the needs of the program well and we are confident that under his guidance
our student-athletes will grow and succeed both on and off the court," Carey said
noted Geriot's background in player development and coaching at a high level as a reason he was a good choice for the university

Iona University named Craig Moore the first general manager of its men's basketball program on March 25
The university also spelled out the new role a little clearer in a news release
Moore served as a coach for USA Basketball, where as head coach he won a gold medal in the 3x3 AmeriCup in 2024 and placed first in the Men's U23 Nations League in 2024
In addition to playing professionally in 3x3 basketball
Moore has been an assistant coach at Princeton and Northwestern
He has a degree in communication studies from Northwestern
"I am honored to join the Iona University family as the first general manager of the men's basketball program," Moore said in a news release
Moore is the first person to be formally named a general manager of a team in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
