Less than 45 minutes from Iowa City and half an hour from the Iowa 80, the World's Largest Truck Stop offers a little bit of everything: Six fast-food chain restaurants There's so much that unless you are one of America's 3.5 million truck drivers hunkering down for the night, you probably won't have time to explore all of Iowa 80's amenities Curious how to enjoy an entertaining day at the world's largest truck stop The Iowa City Press-Citizen recently spent a full afternoon in Walcott exploring one of Iowa's most unique wonders In 1964, Standard Oil opened the Walcott truck stop as construction of Iowa's portion of I-80 neared completion Iowa 80 started modestly: The facility was housed in a small building surrounded by cornfields and featured a small store The late Bill Moon, an entrepreneur who'd later buy the truck stop He convinced Standard Oil to let him run the truck stop a year later Moon thought the site was 'a great halfway point between Des Moines and Chicago a great spot for a truck stop,'" said Lee Meier "I don't think he set out to be the largest that we would have been the largest truck stop in the world." most recently an update in 2017 that changed the layout of the 130,000-square-foot main building Meir said Moon was inspired to create a space for truck drivers to relax and enjoy a break from the road walking into the truck stop is like stepping into any convenience gas station — on steroids "It always makes me giggle whenever people haven't explored past the 'I just stopped for gas and the sandwich and then I got back on the road,'" Meier said Iowa 80 offers nearly everything except alcohol which they don't sell on site out of caution and we don't think that serving alcohol contributes to safe driving," Meier said There's plenty of other action for visitors to indulge in Iowa 80 is a bustling stop for travelers on the road some stopping for a quick fuel up and others for a long haul journey The truck stop pulls in an average of 5,000 visitors a day With 900 parking spots for cars and 18-wheeled semi-trucks alike Doing it big seems to be Iowa 80's unofficial motto Before there was the nationwide sensation of Buc-ee's there was the 130,000-square-foot Walcott behemoth Today, there are an estimated 2,500 truck stops in the United States, according to the National Association of Truck Stop Operators (NATSO). To be considered a truck stop 15 parking spaces and diesel fuel for sale.”  Iowa 80 could be split into 24 truck stops “I don’t know that anyone has contested us as 'The World’s Largest,’" Meier said Iowa 80 isn't threatened by competitors, even if it's Buc-ee’s, the fan-favorite gas station that is expanding north. The largest Buc-ee’s is 75,000 square feet in Luling, Texas Iowa 80’s main building alone is still 55,000 square feet larger and has room to grow "They might be the largest gas station in Texas but we're the largest truck stop in the world," Meier said If all the talk about size and large offerings has you hungry Iowa 80 places a significant emphasis on feeding its guests 24/7 kitchen that pumps out a large buffet and several multi-course dinners The famous Iowa 80 Kitchen has been serving customers since 1964 now in its third generation and offers a daily all-you-can-eat buffet featuring hearty Midwest cuisine The restaurant serves about 300 diners daily It has savory options like chicken fried steak and loaded omelets to a stack of sweet cream pancakes A Blimpie is located in the Truck Service Center There are plenty of other things to do than eat including shopping or even catching a movie such as commemorative magnets and keychains boasting the “world’s largest” branding to stuffed animals The Super Truck Showroom sells trucker essentials including mattresses for the inside of the cab The showroom has an embroidery shop that can customize anything Some truckers pick up T-shirts with their own rides on them “You can find a gift for literally anyone here,” Meier said Drivers in need of a quick tune-up can head across the lot to the Truck Service Center a 24-hour road service with mechanics who assist with repairs such as engine checks alignments and chrome installation services Iowa 80: A home away from home offering dental work physical therapyBut truckers rely on more than vehicle parts to keep moving they can explore the other unique offerings of Iowa 80 Long-haul truckers travel roughly 100,000 miles per year “We try to have amenities that make sense for people so that when they're home they get to just be with their family and not run around and do errands,” Meier said “(Our services and amenities allow truckers) to enjoy the things that matter to them when they are home that are not doing laundry or getting a haircut.” from cracking a tooth to persistent back pain Its dentist and chiropractor operate daily for emergencies or routine visits that can mean getting a routine DOT (Department of Transportation) physical and employer-mandated drug testing After you've had your fill of shopping and a hearty snack perhaps it's time to explore something unique Again Iowa 80 has it covered with its Trucker's Theatre like 'Legally Blonde' and 'Transformers,' the 70-seat theater has something for all preferences “It can be a lonely lifestyle out on the road so we want to offer places for them to hang out with other drivers,” Meier said Catering to the truck drivers' needs is what Iowa 80 emphasizes, especially during the annual Trucker Jamboree The jamboree brings together customers from across the country to celebrate the trucker lifestyle with food and entertainment that includes live music and contests like the Super Truck Beauty Contest and the Truckers Olympics The Trucker's Jamboree has been celebrating the American trucking industry since 1979. It occurs annually the weekend after the Fourth of July. This year, the event is set for July 10-12. Antique trucks take center stage during the celebration. Moon had a passion for older vehicles, as evidenced by his collection, a majority of which is on display at the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum Since opening to the public in 2000 in a storage building the free museum has grown into a collection of 130 trucks vintage gas pumps and an array of historic signage Visitors can step back in time to see what trucks were like on Interstate 80 when it was once a quiet stretch of road He deeply appreciated classic trucks and believed that trucking was a revolutionary force in the American tapestry “(Moon) always wanted to open up a trucking museum which would be his retirement (project)," Meier said but his family opened the museum in his honor.” One of the oldest trucks in the collection is a 1903 Eldridge Enthusiasts believe it is one of the first trucks built in the United States and was made in Des Moines The vehicle is a cross between a truck and a farm wagon But what else would you expect from "The World's Largest Truck Stop?" Iowa can't wait to celebrate Caitlin Clark homecoming including a 4-of-6 mark from 3-point range the Fever looked like a much-improved squad from what it was a year ago when Clark was a rookie rolling past the Brazilian national team 108-44 Kelsey Mitchell led all players with 17 points and three steals while Clark had 16 points and a game-high five assists in her return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena While Indiana's win was just an exhibition game against an overmatched opponent it's worth noting Brazil lost to the Chicago Sky by 27 points on Friday With Clark likely on the bench for the rest of the afternoon the Fever is up 90-35 on the Brazilian national team Indiana has dominated in every facet of the game holding Brazil to just 25% shooting and forcing its opponent into 19 turnovers On what was likely her final play of the afternoon with the Fever up by 52 late in the third quarter Clark crossed halfcourt and proceeded to pull up to swish a 35-foot 3-pointer from only about a foot behind where she broke the NCAA Division I women's basketball career scoring record in 2024 during her senior season at Iowa Clark's deepest 3 during her rookie season with the Fever was 32.5 feet For as much excitement as there was about Clark's return to Iowa the Fever is having its way with the Brazilian national team Indiana is 24 of 42 from the field (57.1%) including a ridiculous 12 of 18 from 3-point range (66.7%) After grabbing her fifth rebound of the day Clark immediately turned her eyes up court and tossed an outlet pass to a streaking DeWanna Bonner who caught it in stride and got a layup to extend the Fever's lead to 40 points It was the second assist of the day for Clark Fever up 20 on Brazil at end of first quarterCaitlin Clark and the Fever are having no problems with the Brazilian national team through the opening 10 minutes A Clark transition 3-pointer pushed Indiana's lead to 20 Clark has six points and has made two of her three 3s in seven minutes The Fever stretched its first-quarter lead to 15 points in style with Sydney Colson finding Natasha Howard with a deft behind-the-back pass on a 2-on-1 fast break for an easy layup In what’s undoubtedly a familiar sight for the thousands crammed into Carver-Hawkeye Arena Caitlin Clark made her first shot of the day coming off a screen and appearing to absorb some contact to drain a 3-pointer from the top of the key for the first points of the game In the hours leading up to the Fever’s game against Brazil there had still been a question of whether Caitlin Clark’s Iowa homecoming would include her actually playing in the game On that front, the home fans in Iowa City got some good news, as Clark was listed as available on the Fever’s pregame availability report Clark missed the Fever’s preseason opener against the Washington Mystics with a left leg injury something Clark described as “a little bit of tightness.” She went through warmups with the team and wasn’t wearing a brace "She had a lot of progress in the last 24 hours, and that was our goal," Fever coach Stephanie White said Saturday "Our goal is to see how she progresses every day so we'll see what happens and see how she feels after the workouts that she went through today and then hopefully she'll be ready tomorrow." especially at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Caitlin Clark has been known to deliver Clark put on a dazzling comeback show to steal an in-state rivalry win With a Big Ten regular-season title on the line in 2022, at the end of Clark’s sophomore year Iowa sold out Carver-Hawkeye for the first time since 1988 she put on a show to remember – going 8-of-11 from 3-point range and scoring 38 points with 11 assists in a 104-80 rout of sixth-ranked Michigan Carver’s fans have been emotionally invested in Clark for that reason She always rose to the occasion when it mattered most That also included ESPN’s "College GameDay" visit to end the 2023 season (and an unforgettable walk-off 3 to beat No 2 Indiana) and the night she was set to break Kelsey Plum’s NCAA scoring record – and merely scored a career-high (and arena record) 49 points she put on a show in her first professional game in Iowa City – while simultaneously kicking off her second season in the WNBA "Something about this gym," Clark would say afterward with a smile Clark scored on a sweet slide-step 3-pointer 32 seconds into the Indiana Fever’s May 4 exhibition game – from just inside the tip of logo Herky’s beak six rebounds and five assists in just under 19 minutes of action as Indiana rolled to a 108-44 rout of the helpless but spirited Brazil National Team Knowing the gravity of her Iowa City return Clark wore her black-and-gold "Bruce Lee Kobe" Nike shoes "that I would have worn literally for every big game in my career at Iowa," she said Clark was a blast to watch in her first game in Iowa City in 13½ months since the Hawkeyes escaped West Virginia in the round-of-32 in the 2024 NCAA Tournament But one of the cool things about this day evolved at sold-out Carver-Hawkeye was how the fans in attendance roared for all the Fever players Clark said she told her teammates before the game “it's going to be the loudest arena you’ve ever played in.” when Kelsey Mitchell lobbed home a 3 early in the first quarter the place went nuts – with a reading of 116 on a press-row decibels reader just a tick lower than 117 for Clark’s first 3 The noise continued as new acquisition DeWanna Bonner swished a deep ball from the left wing After Clark checked out for the first time the crowd was still completely engaged for the five Fever players not wearing No Sydney Colson flipped a behind-the-back pass to Natasha Howard for two as if Kate Martin had just found Gabbie Marshall for a splashed-home 3-pointer in 2023 or 2024 There is a lot of unfounded talk nationally that all these “new” WNBA fans are all about Clark While it’s true that Clark is the driving force of exploding interest the Sunday afternoon crowd at Carver showed by the thousands that these fans (dressed in a pretty even mix of Fever red and Hawkeye gold which pleased Clark) have become Indiana Fever fans as well – just like they loved Kate and Gabbie and Monika and Hannah and Syd and everyone else along the way “One of the best parts about the fan base is it’s not a one-player thing,” Clark said before the game “It was the same thing during my time at Iowa and they loved every single girl on the team whether they played 40 minutes a night or whether they never got in the game.” Bringing this Fever team to Iowa City for a game that doesn’t count in the WNBA standings – the real wins and losses start to get tallied May 17 when the Fever play Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky – was a stroke of genius by new team president Kelly Krauskopf there was plenty of money to be grabbed here and those in Iowa happily swiped their credit cards for $60 to $200 face-value tickets that sold out in 15 minutes But this was a move that demonstrated the passion of Hawkeye fans who have become Fever fans And a day like this can’t help but keep those folks in the fold going into a WNBA season that should see Clark and the Fever contending for a league title Indiana at +340 has the second-best title odds behind the New York Liberty’s +220 This Iowa City stage hit the mark for women’s basketball in our state and in the WNBA the who’s-who turned out Sunday – including Marshall recent Hawkeye assistant coach Raina Harmon former coach Lisa Bluder and the current Iowa women’s roster (which was introduced during an in-game break with Kylie Feuerbach conducting an in-game interview and coach Jan Jensen getting the mic later) This was another celebration of not only Clark but the impact of Iowa women’s basketball “These are the moments that you kind of just want to stay in for forever," Clark said "I'm certain I’ll be looking back at a lot of pictures and videos from today.” Clark was at the forefront of this fun Fever day She didn’t plan on playing a ton of minutes after missing Indiana’s first exhibition game the day before with “leg tightness” – but she looked great against Brazil completely revved up for her second pro season she’s been adding muscle to help her prepare for a physical WNBA regular season and postseason she made sure to give the fans what they wanted in an unbelievably lopsided affair At one point midway through the third quarter she launched an attempt from the “22” logo – the spot from which she broke Plum’s scoring record Clark got an inbounds pass late in the third quarter off a rare Brazil make She quickly looked at the clock and saw it read 30 seconds she knew coach Stephanie White was about to pull her for the day So Clark took three dribbles and just after crossing halfcourt pulled up in front of ESPN's Ryan Ruocco and Rebecca Lobo and probably 3 feet behind the No "WOW," Ruocco exclaimed as she released the deep shot "You bet!" Ruocco roared with his signature call knowing that even in a game that meant very little she gave her fans (and the ESPN audience) another unforgettable experience at Carver-Hawkeye Arena that’s like two-for-one range,” Clark said Might as well launch one.’ That was pretty fun You don’t always realize how far back you are I had to give the fans a little something.” Hawkeyes columnist Chad Leistikow has served for 30 years with The Des Moines Register and USA TODAY Sports Network. The 2015 founding of Vetch: A Magazine of Trans Poetry and Poetics by Stephen Ira and Liam O’Brien, poets from the Writers’ Workshop, and the 2017 creation of Feed Me Weird Things a fiercely eclectic music series by the much-mourned Chris Wiersma testifies to the irrepressible avant-gardism of this seemingly typical Big Ten town And that may be the lesson of all the college towns across the country If we want to keep these communities dynamic Places like Iowa City often have scandalous reputations Yet that reputation sometimes stems not from bacchanalian excess but rather from a refusal to accept the status quo Ensuring that our college towns remain places of real not rote learning These educational communities don’t exist solely to support sports teams and traffic in alumni nostalgia: They also provide opportunities to create books like Jesus’ Son and films like The Black Angel Subscribe to RSS It seems like forever ago since she last played here – even though it’s only been 13½ months, since Iowa outlasted West Virginia in a second-round NCAA Tournament game in late March of 2024 Clark was set to play as a second-year Indiana Fever guard before a sold-out crowd at Carver-Hawkeye with an ESPN national audience watching her team’s May 4 exhibition game against the Brazil National Team Indiana opens the regular season May 17 against the Chicago Sky so this was a tune-up – and Clark’s first exhibition after she sat out the day before against the Washington Mystics What did she have in store for her adoring fans at Iowa where she made four years of memories including two national title-game runs “I certainly give the fans something to cheer about it's going to be the loudest arena you’ve ever played in I’ve got to make a few shots and be able to get them on their feet.” Here are some other topics Clark addressed in her pregame media availability “One of the best parts about the fan base is it’s not a one player thing It was the same thing during my time at Iowa “This is an opportunity for us to really work on ourselves and build chemistry and get better.” What Clark said about her expected playing time“I just love to compete at the end of the day This is a building that I'm very comfortable playing in “A lot of those games were high-intensity games What Clark said about her new team and coach Stephanie White“Some of the things we do defensively is completely different than how they were taught last year I think it's just continuing to build chemistry different lineups on the floor that work.” this was her first full professional offseason after going straight from college to the WNBA last April) Like I hadn't had six or seven months to just be consistent in everything that I did whether that was on court skill development “I think that has led me to look a little bigger But I think just from a stamina standpoint … it's going to help me feel better by game 40 to 44 and then the playoffs Clark on when she noticed Carver-Hawkeye first really come to life“I would probably say my sophomore year We're playing for the Big Ten regular-season title … Nobody really expected us to win the Big Ten that year “I think that was probably the real first point this is special,’ and I still have two more years to be here and enjoy this even when I didn't know if we could continue to do that with how much success we had and how great our fans were “Somehow it feels like the pressure is always taken to another level and another level it’s not a moment I haven’t been in before There's going to be nights that you struggle a little bit “You live your life completely different than you were in college So I think that was the biggest adjustment in Year 1 Caitlin Clark makes her on-court return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena today as her Indiana Fever plays a preseason game against the Brazilian National Team in Iowa City The game is sure to ignite the always passionate Iowa women's basketball fans, hoping to see Clark and the WNBA's Fever put on a show for Hawkeye nation one more time More: Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever score today: Live updates, highlights for WNBA in Iowa city More: What to know about Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever's WNBA preseason game in Iowa Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever will play on ESPN. Scheetz said Scheetz has a master’s degree in public health from Drake University and has served in various public health roles within the UI Health Care system and throughout the state “TRAIL allows older adults to remain very independent in their lives but with a lot of support around them and maintaining and increasing lifelong learning There are many different outlets to learn and grow to keep your mind really active but then also really tangible support such as help around the house,” Scheetz said TRAIL has two staff members in Scheetz and member and volunteer service coordinator Jessica
