— The City of Irondale's Planning and Zoning Commission approved a request for a special use regulation during a meeting held Thursday night for property located at 1951 Grants Mill Road
The approval allows for the acquisition of a permit for a new development project across from the rear entrance of the Church of the Highlands Grants Mill Campus
The proposed development spans approximately 50 acres
leaving the remainder of the land in its native state
and three-story garden-style apartments at the rear of the property
including both townhomes and multi-family residences
Concerns were raised regarding the environmental impact on the Cahaba Watershed and the Cahaba River
including potential effects on groundwater
Additional concerns were noted about traffic and its impact on local schools and first responders
The commission emphasized that the approval is only a step in the building permit process and does not guarantee a permit will be issued
The project will undergo a full review process
and discussions with the Zoning Board of Adjustment will address units that do not meet the 800 square feet requirement
An endangered species habitat assessment has been completed
and engineers have addressed all drainage concerns
The motion to approve the special use regulation was passed by the Planning and Zoning Commission

— The city of Irondale is set to transform the old Zamora Shrine Temple on Ratliff Road into a civic center
aiming to serve as a hub for community development and large events
the temple is expected to be operational by 2026
offering a variety of amenities to the public at no cost
Plans for the civic center include an auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,500
emphasized the importance of these additions as the city continues to expand
"People want to move in a community where the activities are in the community and they don’t have to drive all over the place to be able to enjoy themselves or to find entertainment," Stewart said
"Our goal is to be able to provide that in the city of Irondale and cut down commute times
and it would also keep all of that revenue inside the facility."
This project is part of a broader initiative in Irondale
which includes the opening of Ruffner Park in March
and the creation of a new municipal complex
and fire and police training facilities this year
Mayor Stewart noted that these developments are made possible by $60 million secured by the city last August
following its achievement of a AA S&P rating

The former Zamora Shrine Temple will undergo an $18 million renovation to become the new Irondale Civic Center
which will go through the bidding process for contractors in the first quarter of 2025
is expected to take between 12 and 18 months to be completed and will give the City of Irondale a facility capable of hosting a wide variety of events and also provide several community facilities available for everyday use
Bonds have already been issued through the City’s Public Building Authority to cover the costs of the project
“The Irondale Civic Center renovation project will be the 4th project to move forward in our series of 8 generational capital projects
and we’ll be opening our new Ruffner Sports Complex on March 1 and our new Irondale Public Library later this summer
Our tagline for the City is ‘Build Community
Build the Future,’ and we believe that having a facility like the Irondale Civic Center will help us to do just that
There will be spaces for groups of all sizes and people of all ages to come together and enjoy programming and fellowship.”
The City’s final event before the renovation begins will be a free community game night on Friday
The plans for the new Irondale Civic Center include:
Built in 1985 for the Zamora Shriners Masonic organization
the Zamora Shrine Center has long captured the attention of drivers along the intersection of I-459 and I-20 with its iconic golden dome
Over the years, the building has hosted numerous events from cat shows to roller derby competitions. While several different entities entered discussions to buy the building over the past two decades, the property finally sold for $3.5 million to First Carolina Holdings in 2020 before being bought by the City of Irondale for $5 million two years later
The City of Irondale purchased the facility in 2022 and completed some temporary updates which have allowed the city to host a number of events there over the past few years
They have used it for community events such as an Arts & Crafts Bazaar and game nights
as well as for training events such as a CDL course and a number of first responder training opportunities
The city has also rented it for private events including Kids Market

Ohio — Residents of Irondale voted overwhelmingly Tuesday against surrendering the village’s corporate powers
securing its future as an incorporated community
the decision to retain corporate powers won by an 83% majority
"I've lived here my whole life,” Council President Bill Allen said
“All except four years of military service
all I thought about was coming back here and living
it meant a lot to me and to people that live here
They don’t want to give up their identity.”
would have led to the dissolution of Irondale’s corporate status
effectively merging the village’s governance and services with Saline Township
Mayor Timothy Sechrist expressed optimism for the village's future
emphasizing the importance of unity moving forward
"I think the people really want it and that's good
The mayor has voiced concerns about council's internal disagreements
which he believes have slowed progress in the village
He hopes that cooperation will increase now that the village's future has been chosen
Allen highlighted the financial challenges Irondale faces
especially when pursuing grants that require partial matching funds
"Another thing that we have to look at is grants,” Allen said
“We only have $40,000 a year to run the village on and when you have to pay 10-15-20%
that’s a lot for us to come up with."
He said that's the reason the village has trouble getting things done
the decision to keep Irondale incorporated reflects residents’ desire to retain local control
despite the financial and operational challenges the village faces
"We have things on a priority list,” Allen said
“If they're bad and we know and we see it and they're really bad
that's top on the priority list and we try and get them done.”
