trial for apraglutide the company's candidate for short bowel syndrome Ironwood Pharmaceuticals is working with Goldman Sachs to evaluate “strategic alternatives” after a major regulatory setback derailed its plans to bring its lead drug candidate apraglutide to market The move follows a 32% drop in Ironwood’s share price on 14 April when the company disclosed that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requiring a new Phase III trial for apraglutide its treatment for short bowel syndrome with intestinal failure (SBS-IF) The decision raises questions about the company’s future direction Ironwood made sweeping internal changes – cutting approximately half of its workforce shelving a Phase II study of apraglutide in graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) and scaling back investment in its marketed drug Linzess (linaclotide) – to concentrate resources on bringing apraglutide to market Apraglutide, a long-acting synthetic glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) analogue, was acquired in Ironwood’s $1bn purchase of VectivBio in December 2023 Ironwood described the deal as a way to “strengthen its gastrointestinal pipeline” with expectations that the commercialisation of apraglutide could begin impacting earnings per share by early 2026 the company’s stock took a hit after apraglutide showed mixed efficacy results in the Phase III STARS trial (NCT04627025) Ironwood said that while preparing its regulatory submission “pharmacokinetic analysis indicated that the exposure and dose delivered in the STARS Phase III trial were lower than planned due to dose preparation and administration” Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis The company had believed the existing data – combined with positive long-term extension results showing 27 patients achieved enteral autonomy – could support approval Ironwood initiated a rolling new drug application (NDA) submission this year the agency made clear that a confirmatory Phase III trial would be necessary to proceed pushing back any potential approval by several years Ironwood CEO Tom McCourt said: “We are disappointed in this outcome as we firmly believe apraglutide has the potential to provide tremendous value to patients with SBS-IF who suffer from increased mortality and reduced quality of life and will now have to wait for the results of a confirmatory Phase III trial “We are focused on the best path forward to get apraglutide to market which we believe still has the potential to be a blockbuster drug.” GlobalData’s Pharma Intelligence Center forecasts that apraglutide has the potential to generate up to $586m in global sales by 2030 GlobalData is the parent company of Pharmaceutical Technology Give your business an edge with our and oil drilling including Ironwood Forest National Monument near Tucson Two anonymous sources and an internal memo from the Interior Department, as first reported by the Washington Post last week indicated federal officials were considering scaling back protections at several protected national monuments: Chuckwalla in California Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks in New Mexico Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante in Utah and Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni-Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon and Ironwood Forest in Arizona The move would be in order to “spur energy development on public lands.” The department is looking at resizing national monuments, U.S. Interior Department Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed to Semafor on Friday though he didn’t name which ones and added it wasn’t “a top priority” for the administration “In our country we don’t have a shortage of federal land to take care of,” Burgum told the news outlet Ironwood Forest National Monument is made up of 129,000 acres and contains large concentrations of desert ironwood trees two federally recognized endangered plant and animal species and the region’s last indigenous herd of desert bighorn sheep The monument also holds more than 200 Hohokam archaeological sites dating back over 5,000 years and forms part of the ancestral lands of the Tohono O’Odham people The site was designated a national monument in 2000 by former President Bill Clinton “This is exactly what we’ve feared,” said Tom Hannagan president of the nonprofit Friends of Ironwood Forest “This move would open the door to irreversible destruction of vital Sonoran Desert habitat that is beloved by both our local community and tens of thousands of visitors each year.” Under the Antiquities Act signed into law by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, mining and other extractive activities are generally prohibited in national monuments developers have unsuccessfully tried to access Ironwood Forest’s lands for drilling and mining three Republican members of Arizona's congressional delegation pushed the first Trump administration to completely eliminate the national monument near Tucson Friends of Ironwood Forest said this week that mining on the land would “devastate native ecosystems and sever wildlife connectivity.” “This monument is an integral part of federal and local government plans to protect Sonoran Desert habitat and wildlife corridors for current and future generations,” said Kate Hotten co-executive director of the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection In a Jan. 20 executive order entitled “Unleashing American Energy,” President Donald Trump declared that his administration would encourage “energy exploration and production” on federal lands and waters Interior Department officials detailed their draft plan to shrink federal land holdings and open Alaska and other federal lands for mineral extraction in a leaked document obtained by Public Domain an independent news outlet that reports on environmental issues An Interior Department spokesperson emphasized that the document was just a draft in a statement to Public Domain telling the outlet it was “unacceptable” and “irresponsible” for the media to publish a draft document Project 2025 a right-wing policy document that anticipates the reshaping of the American federal government under Trump includes a section on shrinking national monuments executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity said the group plans to sue the Trump administration in order to protect Ironwood Forest if the rollbacks come to fruition Suckling said in a prepared statement that the environmental group has already sued Trump 23 times since he took office in January “We’ll haul him into court before the ink is dry on this illegal decision,” Suckling said “Upholding environmental laws is part and parcel of upholding democracy itself.” Arizona has the most national monuments of any state the Tucson Sentinel publishes our stories Ironwood offers more than 24 times that compute power,” said Amin Vahdat, vice president and general manager of machine learning Each of the 9,216 Ironwood chips delivers 4,614 teraflops of FP8 performance and is linked together by Google’s proprietary technology The interconnected chips are liquid-cooled and “span nearly 10 megawatts,” Google said in a press release but it’s the only way Google can lock down solid AI performance Google organizes the world’s digital information and presents it to users The Ironwood chip will define just how quickly Google presents information via Gemini The demand for AI is overwhelming data centers and faster chips like Ironwood meet the demand Ironwood is the seventh version of the line of AI chips released by Google starting in 2015 we’ve seen a 10x year-over-year increase in demand for training and serving models That is a factor of 100 million,” Vahdat said The chip is designed to run on Gemini workloads which runs in the Google Cloud infrastructure Ironwood is faster and more power-efficient than the sixth-generation TPU called Trillium “Ironwood TPU is two times more power-efficient than our sixth-generation TPU which is six times more than the 32GB HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) memory on Trillium On-chip HBM capacity is more important than the AI chip speed Higher memory helps chips retain and process higher chunks needed for faster AI processing Google’s Ironwood comes at the right time Other proprietary AI models run on competitive chips Nvidia announced last month its latest Blackwell Ultra chip and next-generation Rubin and Feynman GPUs These chips power OpenAI’s latest AI models Amazon will ship its Trainium3 AI chip this year Anthropic’s Claude model is optimized for the Trainium2 chip Microsoft currently uses Nvidia GPUs but has deployed its own AI accelerator called Maia for inferencing workloads is the first TPU built for reasoning and power thinking with smarter models such as OpenAI o1 and DeepSeek R1 that can reason and think before providing answers “It’s no longer about the data put into the model but what the model can do with data after it’s been trained,” Vahdat said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang last month said that reasoning models would drive compute demand by more than 100x compared to non-reasoning models The Ironwood TPU is designed only to serve Gemini Nvidia’s GPUs are more general-purpose and can run virtually any model except Gemini The “TPU launch builds on a commitment to delivering AI hardware optionality to our customers including our expansive Nvidia GPU-based offerings,” Vahdat said The demand for faster chips is overwhelming the likes of Google GPU makers Nvidia and AMD are also introducing a new AI chip every year The chips were previously released every one-and-a-half to two years Ironwood TPUs will be available in two configurations These technical names will show up for Google customers in the console Google didn’t announce a specific availability date for Ironwood in Google Cloud But it’s safe to assume that Ironwood TPUs will be the most expensive and the older TPUs like Trillium (TPU6) or TPU v5 offerings will drop in price Customers can select those chips for their AI workloads “Some may need the advanced inference capabilities of Ironwood while others may prefer the cost-effective training of TPU v5e,” the Google spokeswoman said The Ironwood peak performance numbers reflected above are for the FP8 data type which is a preferred data type for inference for customers to get an additional boost in data movement and power efficiency at lower precision,” the spokeswoman said Nvidia’s benchmarking of its GPU performance Lower-precision data types such as FP4 generally produce less accurate responses than FP8 but are significantly more power-efficient Ironwood also supports training workloads that require high-precision data types The training workloads “benefit from the massive parallel processing and efficient memory access that Ironwood enables,” the Google spokeswoman said Google’s global data center infrastructure is divided into “AI Hypercomputers,” which house the AI chips Ironwood gives an AI Hypercomputer a lot more muscle Developers can enter the Hypercomputer and define the type of chip they need The Hypercomputer software layers include Vertex AI Developers can select the AI framework and reference implementations — such as JAX or PyTorch — and orchestration software such as GKE or Slurm A new layer announced at Google Cloud Next places AI agents as a way to engage or Ironwood Invitational4/1/2025 3:39:00 PM | Women's Golf Whenever Google talks about the capabilities of a new Gemini version it notes that the model's capabilities are tied not only to the code but to Google's infrastructure Its custom AI hardware is a key element of accelerating inference and expanding context windows Google says it has its most scalable and powerful TPU yet which will allow AI to act on behalf of a user to proactively gather data and generate outputs This is what Google means when it talks about agentic AI Ironwood delivers higher throughput compared to previous Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and Google really plans to pack these chips in Ironwood is designed to operate in clusters of up to 9,216 liquid-cooled chips which will communicate directly with each other through a newly enhanced Inter-Chip Interconnect (ICI) Google says this design will be a boon not only for its own Gemini models but also to developers looking to run AI projects in the cloud Developers will be able to leverage Ironwood in two different configurations: a 256-chip server or the full-size 9,216-chip cluster Google's Ironwood pods can generate a staggering 42.5 Exaflops of inference computing Each chip has a peak throughput of 4,614 TFLOPs which Google claims is a substantial improvement over previous chips Google has also boosted memory for the new TPUs which is six times more than Google's last-gen Trillium TPU The memory bandwidth has also increased to 7.2 Tbps There are numerous ways to measure AI throughput Google is using FP8 precision as its benchmark for the new TPU So you should take its claim that Ironwood "pods" are 24 times faster than comparable segments of the world's most powerful supercomputer with a grain of salt Google's TPU v6 hardware is also conspicuously absent from the comparison chart above The company says Ironwood is twice as powerful per watt compared to that chip Ironwood is best thought of as a successor to v5p while TPU v6 (Trillium) was a follow-up to the less powerful TPU v5e Google opted not to show the lower-specced chips on this chart Trillium was capable of hitting about 918 TFLOPS at FP8 precision While the provided benchmarks are a bit odd, Ironwood is clearly a big improvement for Google's AI ecosystem. It's faster and more efficient than previous TPUs by a considerable margin, and Google's existing infrastructure has enabled rapid improvements to LLMs and simulated reasoning. Google's market-leading Gemini 2.5 model is running on last-gen TPUs right now and Google says the higher inference speed and efficiency of Ironwood sets the stage for more breakthroughs in the coming year Updated April 9 with more detail on how Ironwood compares to Trillium (TPUv6) Thanks for visiting Thanks for visiting its seventh-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) and the first built specifically for inference Inference has become the dominant workload in AI It is what happens when a chatbot responds or an AI agent takes your prompt and executes a plan Google says Ironwoord is ideal to handle the computational needs of newer “reasoning” language models like Gemini 2.5 Ironwood comes in two configurations for Google Cloud customers: a 256-chip version for standard inference needs and a massive 9,216-chip configuration that delivers 42.5 exaflops of computing power Each individual chip boasts peak compute of 4,614 teraflops putting it in the same performance tier as NVIDIA's Blackwell B200 chips The technology represents several key advancements over previous generations Ironwood provides twice the performance per watt compared to last year's Trillium TPUs and is nearly 30 times more power efficient than Google's first Cloud TPU from 2018 This efficiency focus addresses one of the enterprise world's most pressing AI concerns - the growing power demands of advanced models Memory capabilities have been substantially upgraded with 192GB of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) per chip - six times that of Trillium - with bandwidth reaching 7.2-7.4 terabytes per second This expanded memory capacity enables processing larger models without frequent data transfers critical for enterprises deploying sophisticated generative AI applications Google has enhanced the chip's Inter-Chip Interconnect (ICI) to 1.2 terabits per second bidirectional bandwidth facilitating faster communication between chips for distributed processing at scale The technology also features an improved SparseCore a specialized accelerator for processing ultra-large embeddings used in ranking and recommendation systems It’s also tightly integrated into Google’s AI Hypercomputer architecture — a modular cluster design that blends custom chips developers can scale workloads across tens of thousands of TPUs using Ironwood not just as a chip but as part of a composable Ironwood isn’t for sale — like previous TPUs it will be offered exclusively through Google Cloud later this year or how much Ironwood capacity will be reserved for internal use versus cloud customers Ironwood brings a lot to the table—increased computation power The question remains whether Google can use its TPU advantage to claw back ground from NVIDIA Chris McKay is the founder and chief editor of side-mounted induction burner and some enclosed storage but the Ironwood is $1,500 or $1,700 cheaper than the current Timberline grills – depending on which size you opt for The latest Ironwood and Ironwood XL both have Traeger’s fancy new color touchscreen display and a wrap-around rail system that accommodates a host of snap-on grilling accessories the pellet sensor that used to require an additional purchase is now standard equipment and there’s a sturdy open shelf underneath the grill for pellet bins and unused grates The Ironwood now has a much larger side shelf that better facilitates cooking steps like wrapping a pork butt or brisket that shelf has a removable top and the grill has the power plug for a side burner but the company hasn’t announced whether it plans to sell the induction cooktop from the Timberline as a standalone upgrade you get Traeger’s wealth of recipes inside of its app and the software allows you to monitor and adjust the grill from afar thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity This means you’ll be able to sear and even use the grill as a griddle without the fan messing up the temperature which is now viewable from longer distances offering a reliable product that’s more versatile than much of the competition You’ll have to rely on the Smoke Boost mode at 180 degrees Fahrenheit And other than extending cook times for low-and-slow meats you can expand the Searwood’s abilities even further with add-ons like a rotisserie folding side table and folding front shelf expandable top cooking grate and a storage locker there are other options that come in three- and four-burner configurations with porcelain enamel or stainless steel finishes there are both propane and natural gas models and some come with a side burner if you need it the main attraction here is the Weber Connect integration Just like it does on the company’s pellet grills and the Smart Grilling Hub the technology can guide you through every step of the grilling process A mix of written instructions and videos inside the Weber Connect app offer assistance to grillers of all skill levels the system offers real-time food temperatures and estimated readiness countdowns right on your phone so you can better time side dishes like veggie skewers (and keep the hangry crowd at bay) Weber Connect can also keep tabs on fuel level so you’ll know when it’s time to swap tanks there’s a display on the grill so you’re always in the loop Weber has also introduced a host of grill tool sets and accessories that expand the capabilities of its gas grills There’s also a griddle insert that allows you to make everything from breakfast to smash burgers And if you want to transform the entire grilling area Weber has a full-size griddle accessory that will do just that has a few noteworthy features that set it apart from the competition all three versions of the Slate have a pre-seasoned rust-resistant cooktop which addresses one of the biggest headaches with griddles If you don’t take great care of the cooking surface Weber also installed a digital thermometer on the front of the two pricer Slate models which displays the temperature across the griddle so you’re not left guessing when it’s ready to cook The company also developed the Weber Works system of modular accessories that allow you customize the Slate according to how you like to prep and cook and there are storage options for all your grilling gear This pizza oven combines the ease of a propane burner with Solo Stove’s circular dome design curved opening makes it easier to rotate pies during the cooking process and also allows you to see inside the oven better than some of the competition The temperature control is mounted on the front so you have easy access to it at all times you get the key benefit of using gas over wood: you can focus on making great pizza without having to worry about maintaining the flame And since the Pi Prime can hit temperatures of 950 degrees Fahrenheit it will easily crank out Neapolitan-style pizzas in as little as 90 seconds This new model shows temps lightning quick ThermoWorks also improved accuracy and used a brighter display than the previous model An automatically rotating screen makes the numbers easy to see no matter how you hold it plus an auto-wake and sleep feature preserves battery life and IP67 rating protects it from accidental spills you’ll get the thin and durable wireless probe that’s IP69K rated so you can use it for everything from high-heat searing to deep frying The kit also comes with the requisite Gateway receiver that provides Wi-Fi connectivity to send updates to your phone so you can monitor progress from anywhere You’ll also get a wired Pro-Series Air Probe to keep tabs on ambient temperatures inside your grill is Thermoworks is still developing offline Bluetooth connectivity for the RFX making this a great grilling companion if perfectly cooked foods are on your wish list This model also has a two-line touchscreen display so time and temperature can be viewed simultaneously if you want to bypass the iOS or Android apps That software will provide you with recipes and step-by-step guidance so it’s good to consult it even if you’re experienced with this cooking method you can use them to seal leftovers for the freezer or store other goods you don’t want air to get to in addition to sous vide cooking I’ve also found vacuum-sealed packs handy for reheating things like pulled pork the meat doesn’t dry out like it would in the microwave I’d argue one of the most important grilling tools is a cold beverage you’ll need to plan your drinkware carefully so your monster cocktail or water supply remains at a frigid temperature I’ve tried a number of insulated aluminum cups over the years The company is known for its classic thermos bottles and more are affordable and do a great job of keeping drinks cold for hours at a time The larger 30-ounce cup can keep drinks cold for up to 12 hours while the 20-ounce version can do so for up to seven hours There’s a solid handle and the built-in flip-down straw means the drinking area isn’t exposed to the elements quite as much these are a fraction of the cost of the most expensive options and they have better ice retention than some of those too Thanks for visiting Thanks for visiting Thanks for visiting Ironwood Ridge
