The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating after a cadaver dog alerted to "remains believed to be human" on Indianapolis' east side
About 10:20 a.m. April 30, Southeast District officers were called to the intersection of Lexington Avenue and South Irvington Avenue after receiving a report that a body had been found
Homicide detectives responded to the scene, but it's not yet known if foul play is suspected. The remains were recovered from an area of private property that's not visible from the road, according to police. A representative for CSX, which operates the nearby Hawthorne Rail Yard
told IndyStar that the company had not been contacted about the discovery
The Marion County Coroner's Office will investigate the death if it confirms the remains are human
A representative for the coroner's office was unable to release any information at the time of publication
Several people have vanished from the same area of Indianapolis in recent memory
On July 9, 2024, the body of missing 36-year-old mom Tara Capps was found in a storage tote near the intersection of South Keystone Avenue and East Pleasant Run Parkway South Drive
less than 3 miles away from the site of the April 30 discovery
within a mile of the location where Capps was found
Jessica Masker was 24 when she disappeared. She was last seen in the area of South Emerson Avenue and East Washington Street on April 15

A developer has taken a key step toward bringing 156 new apartments and retail space to a well-known corridor in Irvington
according to a project team with Taylor Architecture & Design
which would transform a corner property at 734-748 Springfield Ave.
secured preliminary and final site plan approval late last month from the township’s planning board
The unanimous vote helped advance a piece of Irvington’s East Ward/East Springfield Avenue Redevelopment Plan
which Taylor said benefits from a state Transit Village designation and potentially favorable tax treatment under the state Urban Enterprise Zone and federal Opportunity Zone programs
Taylor Architecture’s Italo Teixeria spearheaded the design of the six-story building
while President Brian Taylor presented the project
They noted that plans call for a mix of one-
two- and three-bedroom homes with amenities such as a first-floor lounge
resident storage and a second-level amenity deck
along with 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space and covered basement and grade-level parking
“The refreshing design of the exterior of the building brings needed life to the neighborhood,” North Plainfield-based Taylor Architecture wrote in a news release
“Located on Springfield Avenue between 21st and 22nd streets
the building has two distinct corner elements defined with inset balconies
Iron spot brick veneer and a two-color fiber cement panel façade undulate both vertically and horizontally for a clean
contemporary look using traditional materials
continuous storefront glazing will highlight new commercial space and the residential lobby

villages in the rivertowns had their own newspapers
Shortly after the turn of the century (the 1899-to-1900 one)
several sprang up: the Dobbs Ferry Register
beginning a 60-year run under different management and in various formats
The Gazette’s fascinating history is now on display at McVickar House
headquarters of the Irvington Historical Society
examine its photographs and read background material on the men and women who made it happen—all curated by Marion Osmun
a freelance editor and writer who lives in the village
The display will be open to the public until next fall
Visiting hours are Thursdays and Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Frank Morrell was not a journalist by training
previously trained at Cosmopolitan Magazine
then based in what is now the Trent Building on South Astor Street
the Gazette ran mostly what Osmun calls “ready print,” which is basically cut-and-paste items that came in over the transom
“but his writing was terrible,” Osmun says candidly
while allowing that “he was so enthusiastic that I got to like him.”
or submitted by village residents into a section called “Local News” that was demonstrably unedited yet somehow charming
Michael Kiernan has been ill for the past week with a serious cold,” and that “Dr
Calvert returned from a visit to Kinderhook in the Catskills on Wednesday evening.”
It was noted in that same issue that “the girl murderer Albert Wolter” had been executed at Sing Sing earlier that week
adding that he was “well remembered in this village
having worked at the home of Joseph Reader for a number of months about four years ago.”
Morrell continued to edit The Gazette for 30 years
he brought in two investors: Herbert Reynolds
Morrell maintained “free editorial reign,” said Osmun
His coverage went beyond Irvington proper and included all of Greenburgh
then village attorney and a co-founder of Sunnyside Federal Bank
of colluding with village trustee Alexander Simpson to profit from zoning changes in the Spiro Park neighborhood
The two officials sued the Gazette for $225,000 (about $4.1 million today)
The case ended when Morrell published an apology that Osmun characterizes as “the only time Frank Morrell wrote anything actually coherent.”
The other big story The Gazette carried was in 1938
occupied the second floor of the spacious Irvington home of businessman Rollo Blanchard
refusing to decamp until Blanchard fulfilled his alleged vow to marry her
Blanchard hired private detectives who tried to force her out by threatening to cut off food
Blanchard alternated his time between his Tarrytown-based yacht and a hotel in White Plains
Editors at The Gazette deemed the standoff as too salacious to devote more than one story
including the New York Times and TIME Magazine
Not long after the Roy/Simpson lawsuit was settled
Frank Morrell himself died suddenly in 1936 at age 62
He was succeeded by none other than Malcolm Roy
who had started out as a sportswriter before enrolling in law school
He bought The Gazette in 1937 and ran it until his own death in 1960
widening the paper from six to seven columns
One of his sons (all of whom became lawyers)
reverting the paper to tabloid size in 1963
Osmun calls the period from 1917 to 1947 the heyday of advertising in local papers like The Gazette
ad dollars were shifting away from local weeklies to national media
the Gazette’s last issue was published on August 28th
Its place in the community was taken by the Rivertowns Enterprise
a weekly that opened in 1975 and closed in January of 2024
which was a monthly printed paper from 2005 until the beginning of the pandemic in 2020
Since then, The Indy has been available as a nonprofit at www.thehudsonindependent.com)
The Enterprise has since been replaced by The Rivertowns Dispatch
local news outlets generally continue to seek a return to that heyday that allowed The Gazette to thrive in a simpler world
and website in this browser for the next time I comment

Irvington police are investigating after a social media post put two schools in the Irvington Union Free School District under lockdown
According to a news release posted to social media by police chief Frank Pignatelli
Irvington High School and Irvington Middle School were placed on lockdown Monday
March 10 following a "social media post that raised concerns."
a concerning social media post was reported to our school administration," Irvington Union Free School District Superintendent Dr
Mara Ratesic said in a community letter provided to The Journal News by the district
"The post contained a picture of a teenage student with a threatening caption
we immediately initiated a lockdown at the Irvington High School and Middle School campus
and the Irvington Police Department arrived at the scene and entered the building
Main Street School and Dows Lane were placed in a lock out
where students and staff remained in the building and no outside visitors were provided access."
collaborated with the school district administration on the investigation
the schools were placed on lockdown while our officers conducted a thorough preliminary investigation," Pignatelli said
"We take all potential threats seriously and worked closely with school officials to ensure the safety of all students
After the student was identified and questioned
it was "determined that the student did not pose a threat" to the district
"The release from lockdown at the middle school and high school was completed after each classroom and space was cleared by police accompanied by faculty members," Ratesic's letter reads
the lockouts at Dows Lane and Main Street Schools were ended."
Of interest: Trump's plans to shut U.S. Education Department raise concerns about student protections
a fire alarm was triggered at the high school at around 12:45 p.m
The cause of the alarm was due to a "smoking microwave in the science building."
"A full evacuation was deemed unnecessary as it had the potential to cause more confusion," she said
we will debrief this incident with law enforcement and update protocols based on what we have learned," Ratesic continued
building principals and district administration will reach out with information as to how students and faculty needing additional emotional support can receive it
"Please be aware that all statements or actions that suggest a threat to the safety and security of our school populations are taken seriously
Any such statement comes with significant consequences
even if they are made jokingly and/or are deemed as not credible
We need the assistance of the entire community as we strive to provide the safest possible learning environment," Ratesic said
there is no credible threat to the schools or the community," Pignatelli continued
Anyone who may have additional information pertaining to the incident are encouraged to contact Irvington Police Department at 914-591-8080
"We appreciate the cooperation of the school district
and students during this time," Pignatelli said
"The safety and well-being of our community remains our top priority."
Ratesic listed several ways you can help in the event you are suspicious a threat has been made against a school
"Immediately report any concern to the school district and the police department."Parents should address their children's online conduct
"Please speak to your (student) about their actions on social media," Ratesic urged
"A post that may seem funny may lead to significant school discipline and/or criminal charges."Children to report concerning posts to their parents
school administration or police immediately
"Every concerning post or statement must be fully investigated," she said."The Irvington School District takes the safety of all students and staff very seriously and recognizes the need to be transparent regarding incidents that may impact our school community," Ratesic closed her letter
"We will always act out of an abundance of caution to ensure all our students and staff are safe both inside and outside of our buildings."

IRVINGTON—The Town of Irvington may be little
the Irvington Farmers Market has grown from a small gathering of just a handful of produce stands to becoming a destination event with nearly a hundred vendors and music
According to market director Heather Sheehan
the market’s humble beginnings had just seven or eight produce vendors in its earliest years
primarily selling their small-farm crops and backyard eggs
while the market still emphasizes fresh and local produce
market-goers can spend hours marveling at a variety of artisan and makers booths

The Irvington Democratic Party holds its nominating convention on Tuesday night in the Town Hall Theater
there are two candidates to succeed retiring Mayor Jon Siegel and three candidates vying to fill two open seats on the Board of Trustees
One of those vacancies is the result of the decision by incumbent trustee Arlene Burgos to run for Mayor; the other is to fill the seat vacated by Mitchell Bard
who has opted not to run for a second term
Irvington Democrats were able to cast early ballots
Competing for the mayor’s chair with Burgos
an attorney who advises high net worth clients in New York City
who has lived and practiced dentistry in the village for decades
The three candidates for the board are Larry Ogrodnek
a software engineer who served a previous term from 2022-24 but lost in a two-out-of- three-way primary race last year
a former Wall Street bond and currency trader who now runs his own green energy investment business out of his home
Neither Price nor Zwiebel has held elective office but each has been active in village affairs; both are members of the Facilities Planning Committee
an 11-member body spawned out of the defeat two years ago of an $18 million bond referendum to restructure the villages firehouse
police headquarters and village administrative offices is one of three main issues in the election
The others are the perennial struggle to expand affordable housing in the village and efforts to expand diversity
equity and inclusion (DEI) in a community that for many years was predominantly white and Christian
In light of efforts by the Trump administration to dismantle all organized attempts to promote DEI
that will be a challenge for any local government
In terms of substantive differences on these and other issues
few revealed themselves in the candidate forum held February 6th
Both in the mayoralty race and contest for the trustee seats
the differences were more in experience and perceived competency for the job
While other candidates may yet emerge before the May deadline for registering
The outcome of Tuesday night’s convention is likely to be the same come November’s election
One reason why Democrats have gained an overwhelming advantage in Irvington politics is that in recent years they have organized to an extent one would expect at the county or state level
they have had a structured candidate forum
with more aspiring officeholders than there are seats available
no candidates put forward—at least as of now

When the new Irvington Theater Commission (which I co-chair with Jessica Arinella) got together after the theater’s grand reopening
the only sensible topic of conversation was: What kind of surreal hell is happening in Los Angeles
The still-blazing wildfires were burning down homes and sending residents fleeing for safety and stability
Everyone on the commission had stories about friends and family affected by this unfathomable disaster
We showed pictures from personal texts and talked about the kids who no longer had schools to go to
So many ravaged communities–many small and vibrant like our own
Still haunted by the Covid pandemic — which shut down our town theater for five years and changed lives forever — we wondered if there was something we could do
there were Zoom calls and streaming text chains
Several Halloween bands and a few local original bands offered to play without pay
A ferociously funny comedian who has appeared on every late-night show and too many comedies to list said she would host the event free of charge
The call to action was unprecedented in my eight years on the Irvington Theater Commission
As a result of this collective hard work, the Irvington Theater will host a rocking benefit show on Saturday, February 8
Our special guest MC (to be announced on February 2) will undoubtedly raise the (new) roof
For sale: raffle tickets (with prizes like dinner at Mima Vinoteca or brunch at the Red Barn)
and bracelets made by middle school students)
it’s heart-affirming to see so many of us unite behind helping a community in need and inspiring to see how many of us are so willing to help,” Arinella says
The Irvington Fire Department and Irvington police responded to calls of a potential bomb threat at the Ardsley Country Club Saturday

and the Westchester County Department of Public Safety also responded to the scene
officers immediately secured the area and coordinated with local emergency services
including the Westchester County Hazardous Devices Unit," the Irvington Police Department said in a news release Saturday night
"All individuals at the club were safely evacuated as officers conducted a thorough search of the premises."
"We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity," police said
Police are working to identify the source of the bomb threat

I applied early decision to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) for Statistics and Machine Learning
I chose CMU because I’m passionate about Computer Science
but since it’s an incredibly competitive major
When I came across Statistics and Machine Learning at CMU
I knew it was exactly what I was looking for
The major is essentially Data Science—which CMU excels in
After researching the school and the major a bit more
I didn’t reach out to anyone from Irvington
but I did talk to a Mission alumni who had been admitted into CMU
The best advice I received was to always tie everything in your application back to the school
Whether it be the ‘Why Major?’ or ‘Best EC’ essay
you should always link your experiences and aspirations into what the school offers and how it aligns with your goals
I began the application process in the middle of summer
I think my essays definitely helped me a lot in separating myself from the rest of their applicants since it’s a really competitive school
were in line with my major so I stressed that in my essays along with mentioning how resources at CMU will help me continue my work on a bigger scale
My research experience included working with a professor from UIUC on AI projects and participating in several science fairs over two years
I competed in numerous math competitions and held multiple leadership positions
It was really exciting when I got into CMU
super relieving that I was able to be done with the college process early on
Some schools let you know about their results in April
and being able to be done in December was amazing
I can’t wait to meet my roommate and everyone else at CMU this upcoming fall
and experience everything the school has to bring
Starting early is one of the best things you can do during the college application process
Many people regret not giving themselves enough time to write
you’ll have the time to create a strong application
and submit something you’re really content with
the organizer of the biggest musical festival in the world
has just announced that this year’s Coachella will no longer be taking place at the usual Coachella Valley
it will be hosted in Irvington’s very own courtyard and in collaboration with Irvington High School
The announcement stunned many all across the world
People could not fathom the thought that Coachella would someday move away from their iconic location — the vast and desolate desert the festival was named after
In an interview with an ASG committee member
they stated: “After the overwhelming success of Newchella/Linkchella in the last few years
we felt the pressure to really up our game
Our activities director asked us: ‘What would happen if you just
And ask them to host the festival here?’ Not sure if he was joking or not
but we did in fact pick up the phone and call Coachella up!”
It appears that Coachella has long wanted to move away from the depressing desert that is the Coachella Valley
and shift to a more appealing and vibrant area
with its lush green grass on the horseshoe
and tall standing trees in the middle of the courtyard
served as the perfect location for the festival
now dubbed “Vikechella,” has set its official date to be on May 21
Due to the last minute and urgent nature of the event
construction has already begun in the courtyard
and other things of similar nature will be needed in order to successfully hold the event
With the courtyard being closed and construction happening virtually around the clock
students have found it difficult to adapt to the new environment
“The constant drilling noises in the background makes it really hard for me to focus during tests and quizzes,” one student comments
“Do you think the teacher will curve our scores more because of the noise?”
some are more excited than others about the prospect of Coachella being moved to Irvington
Many students have already begun to brainstorm ways to sneak in without paying the outrageous ticket prices
or climbing a tree to jump into the courtyard are just a few ideas that have been whispered around campus
It is expected to be a bloodbath in order to get your hands on tickets
But most exciting of all are the performances to be expected
Goldenvoice had also opened up a few slots for Irvington students to perform
This new transition marks a new era of Irvington High School
where the future is full of unlimited possibilities

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) — Concerns about a proposed construction and demolition landfill in Irvington were brought before the Mobile County Commission on Monday
The landfill would be on an 80-acre site located south of I-10 on County Farm Road
Opponents worry about safety and environmental issues
Some residents say it is simply not needed as there is already a landfill south of I-10 just miles away from the proposed site
even excessive capacity,” said resident Kurt Wilson
Others had serious concerns about safety and water runoff
but this project affects people that do not live on the river
and subdivisions and on and on and on,” said resident Richard Becker
Mobile Baykeeper is asking the commission to deny the application for the landfill
saying there is an inconsistency between the application and the 2015 Solid Waste Management Plan
Luke Kiszla claims the application fails to include information about groundwater monitoring wells
“The 2015 plan prescribes a standardized form which requires
that any dirt pit to be converted into a C&D landfill use groundwater monitoring
The applicant declined to provide this information
because ADEM does not require groundwater monitoring wells across the state
but this application is pending before the Mobile County Commission
A representative for the landfill application addressed some of the concerns during the meeting
saying ADEM does not require groundwater monitoring for C&D landfills
The county commission only heard comments on Monday
commission president Merceria Ludgood stated the commission must act within 30 days

A social media post from a student forced schools in the Irvington School District to go into lockdown Monday
a “concerning” post containing a photo of a teenage student with a threatening caption was report to school administrators at approximately 11:40 a.m
Lockdown measures were immediately initiated at the high school and middle school
and Main Street and Dows Lane elementary schools were placed in a lockout where students and staff remained in the buildings and no outside visitors were provided access while the Irvington Police Department and other law enforcement agencies investigated
Ratesic reported on Facebook that the student who made the post was quickly identified and questioned and it was determined the student did not pose a threat
The lockdown and lockout ended after each classroom and space was cleared by police
Ratesic stated a fire alarm was triggered at the high school at approximately 12:45 p.m
The fire alarm was determined to be caused by a smoking microwave in the science building
A full evacuation was deemed unnecessary as it had the potential to cause more confusion
“I want to thank law enforcement for their swift and immediate response
I would also like to thank the school administration
as well as the teachers and faculty for following protocols and keeping our students calm,” Ratesic stated
“Please be aware that all statements or actions that suggest a threat to the safety and security of our school populations are taken seriously
We need the assistance of the entire community as we strive to provide the safest possible learning environment.”
“The Irvington School District takes the safety of all students and staff very seriously and recognizes the need to be transparent regarding incidents that may impact our school community,” she added
“We will always act out of an abundance of caution to ensure all our students and staff are safe both inside and outside of our buildings.”

I’ve been involved with Class Council
and multiple different clubs on campus throughout my high school career
so I wanted the opportunity of being senior class officer to continue making a contribution and change at Irvington
I realized that I have a lot of ideas that I want to be implemented in our final year
One goal I have is for senior year to be a lot more interactive
it’s been more like we do the planning for everyone
The planning process should involve a lot more people
I want it to be tailored to what our class wants so that people genuinely look forward to it
and so that our events are not just repetition of every other year in the past
In terms of my leadership experience in school
I’m one of the bench/spirit heads within Class Council
Vietnamese Student Association cultural coordinator
I have a lot of leadership through my dance school where I teach and I am also an event planner for a meditation center
I have a wide range of experience in leadership
and it’s something that I enjoy because I love working with other people
I’m excited to have three senior class officers next year
a lot of senior class officers have warned us about how much work it is and how overwhelming the workload is
especially on top of the senior year stress
I think having three class officers instead of two is a benefit in that sense because we can split up the work more efficiently
My other two class officers are also very competent people who both have amazing ideas
I’m really looking forward to working with them
and I think we’re gonna make a really good team
I’m most excited to plan prom because that’s the biggest event that people think of when they think of their senior year
It’s something that brings people nostalgia
and I want it to be memorable enough that they make lifelong memories that they will talk about even after they graduate
I want people to feel like their senior year was the best of the four years they had
where I was immediately presented with vibrant colors and a crisp feel in exchange for the crumpled American dollars that laid in my pocket
and feel of every coin and note I began to collect quickly absorbed my mind—I would search for rare coins on Craigslist
refreshed my YouTube homepage with like-minded collectors
and headed to pawn shops in hopes of an addition to my collection
And it taught me much more about the world I live in than just the different bills
The Mexican peso quickly became my favorite
My collection is pretty mid-sized—only 8 countries—so there’s hope for a new favorite
Each piece reminds me not only of my personal experiences
And of course I don’t want to stop—it’s not like it’s making me poorer
INDIANAPOLIS — The Irvington Plaza shopping center has become a symbol of decay and neglect since the Marsh supermarket closed
Its owners have recently made the first step towards the site's possible transformation
A representative for Irvington Plaza's owners notified neighbors of several rezoning requests this week and posted a public meeting notice on the property
The informational letter sent to residents includes possible plans to rezone 7 acres of the 16-acre lot for mixed-use housing and for a "big-box store 10,00 square feet or larger selling beer
The public meeting on the rezoning was planned for December 19
but a successful petition from the Warren Township Development Association pushed it back to January 23
Neighbors who moved to the area during Irvington Plaza's heyday hope the developers do something about the crumbling complex soon
"I moved here in 2006 because all of the shopping and stores
I considered moving," said Teresa Hermosillo
"They started closing and closing and it got vandalized
A heavy fire blazed for nearly four hours into early Sunday inside of a former grocery store on Indianapolis' east side
See photos: Marsh Supermarkets through the years
Smoke billowed as firefighters sprayed water on the building's roof from three aerial ladders to stop the blaze, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department
The fire lasted about three and a half hours

The worst typo I ever made was that my editor
And I didn’t know until I looked at the Master PDF
The ratio of work compared to yapping in the workroom is one to negative third to the power of five
One of the weirdest excuses someone has given me for missing a deadline is that their house flooded in California – in the middle of the day
My most embarrassing article was when I had to do an article on reviewing the bathrooms of Irvington
So I had to interview people about their experience in the bathrooms
So I’m a big back and I’m also broke
I definitely joined this class for the snacks
When an interview is boring I start looking past their shoulder as I’m interviewing them
Who is the person walking by in the background?”
I’m actually the one who held Jeff hostage for the past few months
His parents still haven’t paid the ransom and I don’t think they want him back which is low key awkward…
A fire over the weekend has renewed calls for the redevelopment of a problematic east-side shopping center
On Sunday the former Marsh within the Irvington Plaza was destroyed by fire
The supermarket store dates back to the 1950s and operated inside the Plaza until closing in May 2017. That year, the family-owned grocery chain filed for bankruptcy and sold off its remaining sites
One of its most famous stores was "Shopper's Fair."
The fire comes two months after the former Golden Corral Buffet & Grill in front of Washington Square Mall burned down
Knowing this isn't the first time east side communities have experienced big fires in big buildings
feel there should be stronger accountability for property owners to secure and maintain their buildings
"You ever wonder how an area slides into blight?" said Potter
it is due to an out-of-state property owner
or an 'investment group' just sitting on it without absolutely no regard to the neighborhood around it."
Previous coverage: Cause of fire at former Marsh grocery store in Irvington still unknown
But the owner of the old grocery store said he has nothing to hide and he's more hands-on than many would like to think
He's been on the phone with different entities in Indiana since the fire
"I don't know if it was homeless people or squatters or what was the issue
We have to continue by putting a fence in the back now after all of this."
The fire's cause remains under investigation
according to the Indianapolis Fire Department
Even though it's been a while since he's physically been in the area
Becker said he has hired people to make sure the property stays clean
but it's been difficult because people have used the plaza as a dumping ground
He said the city was good at addressing the fire so quickly
Indianapolis Fire Station 25 sits right around the corner from the former grocery store
It took Indianapolis Fire crews nearly four hours to get the large flames and smoke under control after the fire started Saturday just after 11 p.m
The Department of Business and Neighborhood Services responded to a request for an emergency demolition assessment in the early morning hours on Sunday
Work crews and large equipment were seen tearing down the building soon after
Irvington Plaza has had redevelopment plans for a whileBecker said he's been trying to sell the nearly 16-acre property in the 6200 block of East Washington Street for a while
"Marsh went bankrupt and we lost a tenant there," he said
"We want redevelopment for it but the process has been terrible
(Interested developers) have to jump through hoops."
Tallen Capital Partners
a group that was in the early stages of redeveloping the aging shopping plaza and its parking lot back in 2023
The firm had the property under contract for an undisclosed price from Becker
The California-based developer had a timeline to develop housing on at least one portion of the plaza and was going to go before the Metropolitan Development Commission with a rezoning request later this month
IndyStar reached out to Tallen Capital Partners and left a message but hadn't heard back by the time of this article's publication
"It's been very frustrating and I think the city and..
Irvington is missing a terrific opportunity by not having it redeveloped," Becker said
Last year, the Indiana Sports Hall of Fame talked about transforming the Irvington Plaza into its home base with a timeline deadline before the 2026 Final Four games in Indianapolis

My name is Sarah Lynn Hudson and this is my first year at Irvington as an English 10/English 10 Honors teacher
my family mainly consisted of people in these 3 careers: military
I also had different hobbies like swimming and music
I majored in music before switching to English
Before my career as a teacher I had a multitude of jobs
At age 16 I was a lifeguard for a swim school that I lived nearby
Since then I have worked a number of swim-related jobs such as a lifeguard instructor
I work as the head coach for East Side Union High School in San Jose as well
I dare say that the number of places I’ve been to because of my jobs are equal to Barbie’s
Before I became a teacher at IHS I was also teaching at a few different schools
My time so far has been pretty pleasant compared to my previous schools
My main goal as a teacher right now is to bond with my students and watch them grow not only in their english abilities but also their character
I really value character as much as I do with academics so I find that Irvington really matches the values I have as a teacher
I am the most excited to interact with new people
Although I say that I hate meeting new people I also don’t regret interacting with the people I’ve met so far
I genuinely do hope I can be happy here as a teacher
I value my happiness in my job over money any day
As a new sophomore English teacher at Irvington I was introduced to the World Issues Project
I had trouble grasping the idea of WIP and its deadlines and topics
but my students have helped me navigate through so far
Along with my WIP issues I have also been tripped up with the technology issues
With my issues involving WIP and Aeries I am so grateful for my students’ patience in this process
From this year so far a lot of my students have been nervous and quiet towards me and even approaching me in groups of 3 just to ask me something
I’m really aiming to show to my students that even though I’m their teacher I’m still a human being and they could still talk to me comfortably whenever they like

I applied to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for early action for computer science
MIT is different from a lot of other colleges: you can apply as any major you want
This made picking CS a lot easier for me since I was pretty stressed about it being a competitive major
Compared to any other schools that I applied to
I was really keen on MIT since it’s one of the top schools for computer science and has a lot of great coding opportunities
I also know a lot of undergraduates at MIT
I would have familiar faces to keep me company
and automatically really liked it—a weird fun fact is that a lot of the buildings I saw were awkwardly shaped
and that definitely brought some quirk to the school
I started the application process in summer
I reached out to current MIT students who I know
and they told me a lot about student life at MIT along with how clubs work there
but mostly relied on myself throughout the application process
I didn’t think my essays were too creative while applying
I knew my extracurriculars would be what differentiated me from some other applicants
I competed in the USA Computing Olympiad (USACO)
which is basically the coding version of the AMCs
I also started a YouTube channel centered around USACO questions in hopes of teaching and inspiring others
The best piece of advice I got while applying was to always highlight my passion
Whether it’s in my essays or even in my extracurricular descriptions
I always wanted to show that I had a deep interest in my major (CS)
but also had room to grow with other interests as well
but I included other extracurriculars to make me a better
I was pretty surprised when I got into MIT
I spent the entire day at school stressing out
I am really excited for MIT classes and to meet everyone at the school
For anyone applying this upcoming cycle—don’t force yourself to do things you don’t like
I was encouraged to stop doing USACO and try to do other things
but I didn’t think that was the right option
That passion is what I believe makes people stand out to colleges
it just came because my family speaks Hindi and Gujarati at home
and I’m learning Arabic for my world language credit
so I learned the language by just being around them
I decided to learn it outside of school for my world language credits because it has a big significance in Islam
and I also think it’s a very unique language
My dad doesn’t allow us to speak English at home
and I understand what they’re saying
That helps me keep learning the language and making sure I don’t forget it
so it’s pretty much like learning Spanish at school
and I realize people around me don’t know what that is
Sometimes I don’t even know what language a word is from
it can be a little awkward because sometimes I mix it up with Hindi words
but my family is understanding and they get the context
but I try memorizing words and practicing for tests
I try to build my vocabulary and memorize words
I just go with it to make sure I don’t forget
I really enjoy Urdu because the poetry in Urdu is beautiful
and the poetry has a strong impact when you listen to it
but it also helps me communicate with my family
My mom’s side only speaks Gujarati — they understand Hindi
it’s nice to know the national language Hindi
I think it’s a privilege to grow up around people who speak three different languages because you learn them at a young age
As you grow up and try to learn a new language
The writing and reading are pretty easy because as Muslims
learning a new language is a great skill to have.”
