Carp Creek which discharges into the south basin of Deer Lake The Carp River flows out of the north basin of Deer Lake for about 20 miles and discharges into Lake Superior near Marquette The area surrounding Deer Lake has a rich history in mining Iron mining occurred in the area from 1848-1967 Deer Lake was formed in the early 1880s when the Carp River was impounded to provide water for mining operations in the area Mine shafts filled up with groundwater after being abandoned The mine water was contaminated with mercury which was left over from dynamite residues Mercury contamination spread to Deer Lake through several pathways mercury-containing wastewater was discharged into the city’s wastewater treatment system which ended up in Carp Creek and ultimately Deer Lake which was directed through the city’s storm sewer was diverted into a mine pit on the east side of the city to alleviate flooding and storm overflow concerns in downtown Ishpeming Water flowed to the west through the mine shafts under the City where wells were used to pump the overflow water into Partridge Creek This overflow water was contaminated with mercury from the mine Mercury contamination in the water and sediment of Deer Lake had risen to unsafe levels and significantly impacted the fish community in Deer Lake These impacts led to fish consumption advisories and bird and animal deformities in the AOC Deer Lake was declared one of 31 Areas of Concern in the United States under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement of 1987 A good indication of interim remediation and restoration work success is the removal of Beneficial Use Impairments (BUIs) BUIs are designations given by the International Joint Commission representing different types of significant environmental degradation When Deer Lake was initially designated as an AOC 3 out of 14 potential BUIs were determined to be impaired All 3 BUIs have been successfully removed due to cleanup projects and subsequent monitoring efforts that demonstrated sufficient environmental health improvements The Deer Lake AOC was officially delisted in 2014.The following links exit the site Remediation and restoration work in the Deer Lake AOC began in the 1980s and was completed in 2013 An enhanced Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plant replaced the City of Ishpeming’s three Primary Treatment Plants in 1986 Since the city’s wastewater discharges into Deer Lake this reduced nutrient loading into the Deer Lake AOC by 86% helping remove the Eutrophication or Undesirable Algae BUI which forces oxygen-rich water at the lake’s surface down to the bottom of the reservoir This helped decrease the ability of residual mercury in the lake’s sediment to negatively impact fish and wildlife populations as high oxygen levels prevent mercury from methylating into its more bioavailable form The bottom draw dam helped remove Restrictions on Fish and Wildlife Consumption and Bird or Animal Deformities or Reproduction Problems BUIs The decrease in contaminated water also helped reestablish successful bald eagle populations at Deer Lake which hadn’t been seen since the early 1960s Partridge Creek flowed into an underground mine pit on the east side of the City of Ishpeming where it became contaminated with mercury from historic iron mining activities The water discharged on the west side of the city where it flowed into Carp Creek and ultimately ended up in Deer Lake raising mercury concentrations in the ecological system and fish tissues to unsafe levels The project was completed in two phases and was funded by $8 million from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and $700,000 from the City of Ishpeming The first phase of the project targeted the upstream portion of the creek creating 0.5 miles of closed culvert and 0.2 miles of open stream The second phase targeted the downstream portion of the creek attempting to restore its naturally meandering stream channel meanders and submerged structures to provide increased habitat for brook trout The result is over 0.5 miles of prime brook trout habitat It also created 1.3 acres of new wetlands in the restored creek’s floodplain This project decreased mercury loading into Deer Lake helping decrease restrictions on fish and wildlife consumption and increase recreational opportunities in the area The Partridge Creek Diversion Project targeted the Restrictions on Fish and Wildlife Consumption BUI.  ISHPEMING – The Ishpeming City Council had a special meeting yesterday morning to discuss an opportunity to request potentially millions of dollars from the state of Michigan to repair or replace the first responder facilities in the city of Ishpeming “The thing I have to lead with is portions of this were not prepared for because it came up suddenly,” said Ishpeming Mayor Pat Scanlon “As soon as the manager was made aware of the potential we jumped on it … So this is an informational meeting to give direction to city staff to move forward.” “Tuesday night at about 4:45 I received a call from (State) Representative Karl Bohnak,” said Ishpeming City Manager Randy Scholz ” About being willing to submit a budget request for the Ishpeming Fire and Police facility “He also informed me that the deadline for the application is due today not a lot of time to kind of get things together that is really the reason we are having this meeting.” there is no required funding match needed for this request and it would be given as a lump sum to the city of Ishpeming The amount of funding requested is looking to be in the few millions for a whole new building but the city council was looking at repairing the fire hall which would be under a million dollars “One thing I want to preface is that this isn’t a grant,” said Tanner Orban “This is coming out of the state budget for the fiscal year … We can’t make any promises due to the political uncertainty down here but we at least want to fight for you guys since we know you are looking for some funding.” Ishpeming City Council Member Jason Chapman spoke on how he has been working on getting the fire hall fixed by bringing Bohnak and state Sen “The one thing that Ed (McBroom) did make kind of clear was that this was the worst firehall in his district which as we know it the whole U.P,” said Chapman “I really apologize to the public that we couldn’t get more notice,” Scholz said Chapman explained his thoughts on how repairing the fire hall is throwing good money after a bad problem especially when there is an opportunity to build a whole new facility Chapman brought up how the current fire and police departments’ facilities are crammed need more garage space and that some aspects of the facility rely on the workers’ own personal equipment; and that there is an opportunity to gain a lot of money for this project “What is a big chunk?” said Scanlon You’ve been working and you worked diligently for five years and we have received nada (nothing).” “I am talking right now,” said Scanlon reasonable likelihood of getting reasonable grants I don’t disagree with the fact that a new fire hall But the likelihood of being refused is huge ‘Well we’ll give you $10 million for something we don’t have a clue.’ The second thing is we can come out of this with a new firetruck which is quite likely with a new fire truck and a repaired historical building which is an anchor for the community In the short term we could spend $400,000 to tear down one of the most beautiful and you know it’s near and dear to my heart one of the most beautiful structures in the Midwest and top it off with a rubber roof Or we could spend a few more thousand dollars and restore it to its original beauty and still use that building down the road after we build a new station.” Chapman responded that if the council agreed to fix the current fire hall he would want to restore it and not cap it off “Which is why we are here today,” Scanlon said Chapman again brought up the issues of space in the current building Chapman offered the solution to ask for an addition to the fire hall and police department you are off the subject,” said Scanlon “We have two reasonable options,” Scanlon said “Four council people agree in a direction.” only Scanlon and Chapman have been involved in the debate during this meeting Chapman reiterated that his proposed compromise has beneficial qualities Especially since a floor in the facility is deteriorating “The floor where?” said Scanlon Chapman continued and explained that it was a floor in the fire hall that was deteriorating and that it would be beneficial to include additions to expand the space “Is it really that pertinent to the subject today?” said Scanlon Chapman said he believes it is pertinent and a part of the conversation “Then what would we ask for?” said Scanlon Chapman explained that if the council was going through the restoration path they should ask for the restoration amount for the fire tower and an addition to the building “And how much would that be?” he said “Can I see the drawings?” said Scanlon Chapman said those things could be worked out “We don’t have anything,” said Scanlon “He (Scholz) has got to pull the trigger today.” “We can sit here and wish in one hand and do things with the other,” Scanlon said “Can we please get back to the point you stated your position and it is clear you don’t support the rest of us.” Chapman said he is not saying he does not support the restoration and he tried to continue but Scanlon interrupted Chapman said he would like the opportunity to at least finish his point “You have finished,” said Scanlon “You are currently out of order,” Scanlon said as Scanlon began pointing his gavel at him “And I won’t call you out of order if you wrap up your comments now,” Scanlon said Chapman asked if Scanlon was going to let him wrap up his comments “I will give you two minutes,” said Scanlon Chapman began by saying that he believed it all wraps up together but Scanlon interrupted Chapman said he disagrees and that since he has experience working on this subject “It’s irrelevant,” he said Chapman said that he knows Scanlon doesn’t believe he has any friends down there … and Chapman has heard the comments Scanlon made “That’s irrelevant too,” he said “We are not going to argue about it,” said Scanlon Chapman said he wanted to try to get improvements made to the building but he will support the council’s decision to go forward “That’s absolutely your call,” he said and said that there are actually two fire engines that need to be replaced and that he is trying to look out for the first responders of Ishpeming “And we are not asking for two today because that would be greedy,” he said Chapman said that he understands Scanlon’s point but that there are things that the Ishpeming First Responders need the motion I will make is to direct the city manager to request the funding for the fire truck that has been (priced and examined for capability) and we have the numbers (for) and to request restoration funds for the fire tower that we have a plan (for) and we have numbers (for),” Scanlon said All stands before the storefront that will house his restaurant The building was long the site of the celebrated Ishpeming restaurant Ralph’s Italian Deli ISHPEMING — Food truck owner Michael Grant said he has no illusions about replacing the celebrated Italian restaurant that was Ralph’s Italian Deli “We’re taking over a community staple that’s been in this city for generations,” he said Ralph’s went out of business in September when owner Bruno Gervasi retired much to the dismay of countless devoted customers The Ishpeming building that housed Ralph’s for nearly 40 years will now be home to The Island an extension of Grant’s mobile business The Island Food Truck “It’s not going to be Ralph’s per se anymore We’re not going to even try to replicate what Bruno was doing,” Grant said “I ate at Ralph’s all the time I was just as sad as anyone else here in Ishpeming about him closing down It kind of left this hole out here.” Perhaps Grant can patch that hole with his popular sandwiches such as Duke’s Revenge and Benji’s Best named after his family dogs; gyros; breakfast burritos; hot dogs; and fries Grant said serving food out of a storefront is a natural progression for a food truck owner That he has reached this stage in his entrepreneurial evolution is a testament to Grant’s perseverance He said he worked in other people’s restaurants for most of his life including at Stuckos Pub and Grill in Marquette for many years When a Stuckos food truck came up for sale Grant partnered with a friend he knew had some capital on hand and they purchased the truck together But Grant found himself back in the Stuckos kitchen when a 2019 fire destroyed the food truck as it was parked in a Marquette storage unit that went up in flames “Once you get the taste of working for yourself and not for other people it’s really hard to go back to work for other people So when another friend received a small inheritance That friend has since been bought out of the business and moved on to other endeavors An Ishpeming building was the logical choice out of which to operate The Island Grant lives in the town along with his fiance Amanda “Both of my children were born out here at Bell and both will graduate from Ishpeming High School I don’t plan on going anywhere,” Grant said He said he was impressed with the gigantic prep kitchen in the back of the former Ralph’s building “I’ll be able to run both the (food truck) trailer and business out of the same building and that sounds great to me,” he said “This building is just as much this community’s building as it is my family’s now I hope we come together and make some good food.” MARIE - Ishpeming Westwood beat the Glen Lake Lakers 62-40 on Thursday night ending a fantastic season for the Lakers Ishpeming Westwood liver Nelson is well-known in the Upper Peninsula and beyond for his talent as a composer of concert band music He has also worked as a public schools music education teacher and is former director of the Negaunee City Band The cancer diagnosis left him feeling numb with shock ‘did I hear this right?’ You try to make sense of it and come to terms with it eventually Everybody is different; just like grief itself everybody has their own process,” he said the process of coming to terms with his terminal illness inspired him to launch what he refers to as his “final mission.” He seeks to grow the Youtube page that features his original compositions and in doing so create revenue to help support his family once he passes ‘I don’t know exactly how long I have left but I don’t want to spend it crying all the time or feeling bad all the time,'” he said “You’re faced with what you are leaving behind I guess I’m definitely leaving music so I should probably turn that into something that is not only an aesthetic benefit but a material benefit to my wife and children.” He is married to Becky Nelson and is father to twins Robert and Peter Nelson referred to music as being second to his children as being his greatest legacy to this world Composing music is an interior calling that first reached out to him as a young child taking band class as a student in Ishpeming Public Schools “You cannot really repress it,” he said “It’s just something you have to be so even if you don’t necessarily make a living doing it it’s something you find yourself going back to Dave Dagenais was Nelson’s Ishpeming band teacher The two have remained close throughout the years 16 ceremony inducting Nelson into the Marquette Music Hall of Fame “What made Brandon stand out is that he was very curious about writing music at a very young age He was very interested in composing and arranging music,” Dagenais said This kid’s 10-years-old in fifth grade and he’s asking me things like ‘how do you transpose for the alto sax and what’s the range of a tuba?'” Dagenais described learning of Nelson’s cancer diagnosis as “very surreal.” that’s what I have trouble with about this Bad things shouldn’t happen to anybody but he’s such a kind and compassionate person that’s what makes me the saddest,” Dagenais said which for now is largely focused on pain management “I don’t feel like I want for anything medically The hospice people have been very supportive They make sure I’m as comfortable as I can be and I can do the things that I feel like I need to do,” he said Nelson said nobody can tell him for certain how much time he has left but he plans to spend it composing music and focusing on the people he loves are going to go through their own grieving process and that’s natural,” he about from free luging at the annual Heikki Lunta festival in Negaunee “I only slid for a month before I made the team the next year,” said Pizziola ‘You almost did a full season in that month.’ They only slide Fridays go back and luge until the lights shut off and I would do that Friday Luge is not the only thing that Pizziola is busy with he also is a fulltime student at Northern Michigan University studying athletic training often works one or two jobs and coaches women’s pole vaulting at NMU “When I first started we had a few international people come over one from Japan and one from Canada,” said Pizziola “I remember them laughing at me because I would leave to go to class and then come back to the track after.” Pizziola smiles after a World Cup luge race He found his love for the sport during the Heikki Lunta winter festival in Negaunee and from there he sped to a top position on Team USA in natural luge many years down the line and after traveling all over the world he often can’t wait to return home after the competition season “Most people know about Marquette but that gets smaller and smaller the farther away you go,” said Pizziola “I go to the city and get that city aspect and you’re like ‘I think I like the (Upper Peninsula) where I am.” That is exactly how I get.” Growing up in the shadow of the National Ski Hall of Fame Pizziola hopes that luging can add to Ishpeming’s fame in winter sport as well as hoping that it gains more popularity “There are your main sports like football “But there are so many more that you don’t even know about in high school until you try them The amount of opportunities that are around are just insane Pizziola has been a part of the United States Natural Track Luge Team since 2023 along with various other local and distant athletes like Katie Cookman Along with his Negaunee and United States Team Luge coach Keith Whitman and international coach Jack Leslie “They really help with homesickness,” said Pizziola “They are like a second family and I owe my coaches everything.” During the 2025 FIL World Championship in Kuhtai in women’s; Thomas Matthews get 14th in mens; Leonard Pizziola earn 20th; and Mason Palecek achieve 23rd It will be another two years before the next FIL World Championship and Pizziola believes he has a long career ahead of him since this is his second year doing luge and only his third year out of high school “I like joking with a lot of people that I’ll do it until I’m 29 or 30,” Pizziola said ‘You can’t retire from coaching until I retire from competing.’ Then coach would ask when that would be and I’d tell him ‘You just have to wait and see.'” To be able to travel for the World Cup races Pizziola needs to raise money himself to afford the thousands of dollars of gear and airfare He often provides local businesses the opportunity to sponsor him so he can show off local support traveling around the globe “I am always looking for sponsorships I have gotten one or two this year,” said Pizziola “I wanted to give back to my community this year and I was talking with people and I am getting custom shirts to give away to my supporters all over the place.” The UP luge club has various sponsors like Travel Marquette “A lot of the bigger businesses are harder because they don’t look at sports that arn’t in the Olympics and stuff To see them on the stage and be posted worldwide is so cool I post some stuff on my main accounts and U.S Luge will repost my stuff and it is so nice to see all that.” he can be found on Facebook under his name (WZMQ) – An Ishpeming man
