Boston College Law School’s Jessup Moot Court team hosted a public practice round on March 25 as they prepared for the national competition
has already found much success this competition season and advanced beyond regionals to the international level of competition
Coached by alumnae Jeanne Semivan ’09 and Meaghan Luster ’20
the team presented arguments to a panel of esteemed judges on complex issues of international law
This year’s problem presented four distinct issues embedded in a hypothetical case problem
Members of the team analyzed and presented arguments surrounding (1) the rights and obligations of various international community members when two different people claim to be the president of a state
(2) invocation of immunity for governmental officials who are accused of human rights violations
(3) legal consequences of receding coastlines caused by climate change for the maritime zones of coastal states
and (4) the interpretation of a compromissory clause in a international treaty
all team participants exemplified poise and knowledge that impressed the judges
They included practitioners Kathleen Hamann from Pierce Atwood and Yuri Parkhomenko from Foley Hoag
The bench brought a multitude of experience and perspectives on international law to the exhibition round
and each judge pushed the team to work through complex questions surrounding their arguments
Jessup’s international rounds will take place in Washington
this spring at the International Court of Justice
3Ls Jess Parillo and Savannah Wormley finished as quarterfinalists in the 75th Seigenthaler-Sutherland Cup National First Amendment Moot Court Competition
They were among thirty-two teams from across the US who competed at Catholic University Law in Washington
For the first time in more than thirty years, a Law School team has qualified for the international rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition
one of the largest and most competitive moot court contests in the world
all 3Ls students—secured their place in the international rounds after advancing to the quarterfinals of the US West Regional competition
they won all four preliminary rounds and received individual recognition
including Schmitt being ranked the fifth-best oralist among more than 200 competitors
at the end of March to compete against top teams from around the world
The Jessup international rounds are judged by a panel that includes international law practitioners
“This is a significant accomplishment for the team and for the Law School,” said Talin Hitik
a Lecturer in Law who serves as faculty advisor and coach
“It reflects the students’ hard work and also highlights the value of giving students the chance to study and practice international law at this level.”
The last time a team from the Law School advanced to the international rounds was in 1992, according to the International Law Students Association
With about 700 law schools from 100 countries participating in the competition
the Law School making the international rounds is an impressive feat
Hitik said that the Law School’s recent move to make Jessup a for-credit course likely contributed to this year’s success. Unlike many schools where Jessup is an extracurricular activity, UChicago Law students enrolled in a three-credit seminar in the fall
focused on foundational international law topics and issues drawn from this year’s competition problem
Students also earned an additional credit in winter quarter for cocurricular work
including drafting written submissions known as “memorials” and preparing for oral arguments
and students need the time and institutional support to do well,” Hitik said
“The Law School’s decision to create a credit-bearing course allowed them to commit fully.”
Although this is Hitik’s first year leading the Jessup course at UChicago Law, she previously advised teams at the University of Michigan. Her background also includes experience at the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the Hague Conference on Private International Law
as well as teaching and litigating international law issues in Armenia
She competed in Jessup herself as a student
The team divided responsibilities similar to how real cases are presented before the International Court of Justice
the fictional setting of the Jessup problem
while Schmitt and Apodaca argued as respondents
Wang served as “of counsel,” handling research and helping with responses to judges’ questions during rounds
Apodaca said the format gave students a rare opportunity to engage in both sides of complex legal issues
“Our Jessup team comprises two people who argue on behalf of the applicant
two people who argue on behalf of the respondent
who knows the law for all of the issues,” she said
“We each always have two other people with equal substantive knowledge of our issues on whom to test ideas
Some of our best arguments have come after exhaustively debating one another.”
Schmitt also found working together as a team to be a key part of the experience
we competed against each other each week and thus helped the other build their case
Seeing our progress in action while competing against other schools during the competition was so much fun
this has been the most team-oriented activity I’ve participated in at the Law School
It has been great to watch each other grow.”
the team won all four of its preliminary rounds—two as applicants and two as respondents—placing them among the top-seeded teams heading into the elimination rounds
The team went on to win their octofinal round against California Western School of Law before being narrowly defeated in the quarterfinals by Arizona State University
UChicago Law was one of eight teams from the West Region to qualify for the international rounds
“I’ve never done an academic competition before
so I was surprised to find that the level of pressure and competitiveness was equal to that of my competitive tennis days,” Apodaca said of the experience
“It was fun to get in the competitive spirit
the regional rounds have been the highlight of her Jessup participation so far
“It was where I really realized how far I had come in the last six months in terms of learning the law and becoming an oral advocate,” she explained
“There is something very rewarding about being able to speak confidently for twenty-two minutes on a subject that you’ve studied
and I felt that confidence for the first time standing in front of the podiums in Portland.”
The team is now preparing for the international rounds
which will be held March 29 to April 6 at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill in Washington
The event will bring together top teams from national competitions held around the world
with more than 100 schools expected to compete
Hitik said the international rounds present a new set of challenges
including arguing in front of judges from various legal traditions and backgrounds
“One thing that will be different is adjusting to an international panel,” she said
“Students will have to be mindful of language
and assumptions about how law is argued and interpreted—especially in front of judges who don’t come from common law systems.”
She added that many judges are practitioners and scholars involved in international courts and tribunals
offering students a rare opportunity to engage directly with people working in the field
Clifton said he is delighted that the team will have the opportunity to compete in the international rounds
“This is the world’s largest moot-court competition
and I’m incredibly excited to meet fellow students from some 100-plus countries around the world.”
Jessup has been a defining part of their law school experience
offering practical training in international law advocacy
participating in the Jessup has set me up with an excellent foundation for launching my career as an advocate in international law,” Apodaca said
this level of substantive practice is the kind that some lawyers don’t get until far into their careers
Getting so much practice in oral argument has been hugely beneficial from a career perspective.”
Apodaca said researching and writing on complex international issues—such as sovereignty disputes and maritime law—gave her exposure to a wide range of roles in the field
“Through the hundreds of sources I have read—decisions from the International Court of Justice
UN Special Rapporteur reports—I have come to see the breadth of roles available for international lawyers,” she said
Wang said his role as “of counsel,” which is a support position in nature
was a valuable learning experience for him
I need to listen attentively to our opposing agents’ presentation
and help my teammate deliver an effective rebuttal
I was happy whenever my efforts paid off!”
Wang also said that the Jessup competition helped him develop good project management skills
“When you execute long term projects like this
Professor Hitik showed us how to balance between them
and this skill will be crucial in my future legal work.”
Clifton said Jessup has been one of the most enriching intellectual experiences of his time at the Law School
“It has given me the opportunity to gain a much deeper knowledge of several fascinating areas of international law than I was able to gain in most courses
It has allowed me to take ownership of my education in a way that makes the resulting mastery feel especially rewarding.”
“This has been one of the few experiences in law school where I’ve received constant feedback
especially regarding oral advocacy,” she said
I’ve learned so much about public international law
From ongoing gaps in the law to emerging developments in the middle of preparing for the competition
it has been extremely interesting and enlightening to take a deep dive into public international law.”
Although this is the first year UChicago Law has offered Jessup as a credit-bearing course
Hitik hopes it becomes a permanent part of the curriculum
“I would love to see this continue,” she said
“What these students accomplished this year shows what’s possible when they’re given the right structure and support.”
“I hope UChicago will remain invested in the Jessup for years to come,” she said
“The experience has contributed so much to my learning
and I want future students to be able to say the same.”
Whatever happens in this year’s international rounds
Wang is optimistic about what the future holds for UChicago’s involvement with Jessup
“As long as the school and its students continue devoting time
I am sure one day UChicago’s team will bring the Jessup Cup home.”

Carbondale-based band Sweet Jessup and the Dirty Buckets has made quite a splash in the Roaring Fork Valley since the group’s inception in 2022.
The band’s eclectic instruments — including a 30 gallon plastic trash can for a drum
a singing saw and wine bottles — vocal talents and original tunes create a unique
“trashy jam” sound that’s a little folksy
who had a vision for a group that would drum on buckets and trash cans to create a “junkier” sound with a modern
The group’s name was inspired by the Sweet Jessup Canal that diverts water from the Crystal River
“I always thought that was a cool name and would be a cool name for a band,” Williams said
“That’s where I got that inspiration
It was one of the first ditches in the valley to be built and I’m not a huge advocate of taking water out of rivers for agriculture
I like aspects of history and that’s part of the American West development
We are kind of old timey and it’s an old timey homage to the ancestors that came here.”
The “dirty buckets” part of the name was a group idea
“My initial idea was the ‘bucket brigade’ and for ‘dirty buckets,’ literally the 30 gallon (trash can) we play was not only found in my backyard
left dirt on my living room floor when we were practicing,” Williams said
Since its dirt-covered beginnings, the imaginative local group has been busy building its credentials with gigs like Mountain Fair and the FoCoMX festival in Fort Collins. This month, the band released the EP “muddy water,” its first music drop since its debut album
“Dirty Demo,” in July 2024.
Although “muddy water” is just two songs — “Queen of Spades” and “i’ll be around” — both are rich with the band’s signature sound and layered with emotion.
A few band members write songs for the group and everyone helps shape the final sound
but “muddy water” came straight from Williams’ heart
“Queen of Spades” is about Williams’ climate depression.
(the queen of spades) is bad luck — in old school tarot
“Sometimes I feel a little climate depression
when we’re not getting snow and things are drying out and (stuff) is burning out here
While there are notes of positivity in references to the freedom and beauty of the Crystal River
about where we are at right now as humans with our relationship with this earth,” Williams said.
“i’ll be around,” carries a more melancholy tone
It’s a love letter inspired by the death of Williams’ friend Casey Piscura
and he hopes it brings solace to others who knew Casey
“The way I make music is really emotively
so when I get sad or happy I’m generally writing a song
That song came from the deep sadness of a friend’s death and processing that,” Williams said
after a couple of times of messing around with this melody and this chord progression
the lyrics came and it became clear that the song was going to be for Casey,” he added
both songs explore life — the giving and the taking.
“The album cover is a train bridge that has fallen,” Williams said
“Muddy water is a thing that destroys
but it’s also a thing that brings us life
It’s this cycle of death and beauty that we’re all engaged in.”

Jessup is the world's largest moot court competition, bringing together law students from different parts of the world to engage with pressing international legal challenges.
This year's competition features teams from three countries participating for the first time—Angola, Maldives, and São Tomé & Príncipe—as well as first-ever National Rounds in five countries: Finland, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Vietnam. A record number of teams are registered from 15 countries, including Bangladesh (45 teams), Egypt (14 teams), India (53 teams), Pakistan (45 teams), the Philippines (34 teams) and the United Kingdom (27 teams).

This year's case concerns the rights and obligations of the international community when two persons claim to be the legitimate president of a nation state; the possibility of immunity for government officials accused of grave violations of human rights; the legal consequences of receding coastlines for the maritime zones; and the interpretation of the compromissory clause in a treaty creating a regional organization.
Students will present written and oral arguments on these topics before a simulated International Court of Justice (ICJ), with winners of qualifying rounds advancing to the White & Case International Rounds in Washington, DC during the first week in April, where they will compete for the coveted Jessup World Cup. White & Case has sponsored the International Rounds since 2010.
The White & Case International Rounds will culminate in the Championship Round judged by sitting ICJ judges, providing a unique and invaluable experience for participants.

and attendants at Zum Transportation in Jessup have voted by a four-to-one margin to join Teamsters Local 570
“I voted to join the Teamsters because management has made false promises to employees for far too long,” said Karl Fernandez
“We asked the Teamsters to represent us because they will ensure we get a collective bargaining agreement that includes better wages
Zum transportation workers have sent a resounding message to their employer that they will no longer be treated with disrespect and offered the bare minimum,” said Sean Cedenio
“We could not be more excited to welcome nearly 300 brothers and sisters to our great union
we get to work on fighting for a first Teamsters contract.”
These new Teamsters provide essential student transportation services for Howard County Public Schools
“The way that we have been treated is unfair and enough is enough,” said Dwight Blackwell

Len Jessup has been scribbling down his thoughts for decades
One jotted scrawling has stuck with him—a reminder that at the end of his life
he wants to be sure to look back and know he did as much good for as many people as he could
and that he never shied from opportunities to do that
Jessup (Information and Communication Studies
and weave together his most profound and reflective thoughts
The retired university administrator and educator was approached by Forbes Books with a proposition
the editors said Jessup wasn’t famous enough for a memoir
but they recognized in his story a theme that others had witnessed in him throughout his career—his sentiments of leading to serve and uplift others
With a structure in mind, he put pen back to paper and revised his book in the spirit of a favorite author, Mitch Albom, with short snippets of wisdom forming a slim guide he titled Self Less Leadership
he argues selfless leaders can maximize impact by guiding teams
He stresses the power of constant learning
surrounding yourself with people far smarter than you
and Jessup has had great success on a nationwide speaking tour
he brought his talk back to his alma mater to share it with students
acknowledging the visit brought back many memories of where his leadership journey took root
and Jim Owen for nudging him in unexpected directions
starting with Chico State’s MBA program after he finished his undergrad degree
he led the Graduate Student Association and was inspired to apply for a PhD at the University of Arizona
thinking he’d find his way back to teaching business
He retired in 2024 from his role as president of Claremont Graduate University
with “published author” among his already-lengthy list of credentials
he’s enjoying the chance to inspire and support others once more
His motivation is simple: to help others become great leaders to influence their teams and improve their spheres of influence
“I have to make sure people find personal fulfillment and meaning from the work they are doing so they will know for themselves that it was a life well spent,” he said
“You leave a legacy you hope that is positive.”
That desire to do good is what drove Jessup—as someone who admits he borders on the line between introvert and extrovert—through a career filled with 14-hour days
“You start to see you could have a real impact
and see that things you are doing are making a difference.”
it wasn’t the path he saw for himself before his time at Chico State
A first-generation student raised in the Bay Area but who relocated with his family to rural Fort Jones in Siskiyou County as a teenager
He attended College of the Siskiyous and played baseball
and when his friends started to transfer to four-year universities
“It was the perfect place for me to come into myself as an undergraduate—student-focused
Little did he know he would discover his true strengths
as the seeds were planted for a career in business
he says he often finds himself marveling with gratitude to have built a career based in lifelong learning and uplifting other people
“It’s less about my legacy—it’s about the people I am responsible for
so they know when they get to the end of their path that their legacy is secure,” he said

titled “Church and Science Working Together to Cultivate Resilience in the Face of Suffering,” aims to equip pastors with the tools to address suffering and trauma in their congregations through a collaborative approach between theological and scientific communities
Dean of the Seminary and Professor of New Testament
we aim to support pastors with the knowledge and tools necessary to cultivate resilience and well-being in their ministry settings.”
The project will convene two pastoral cohorts – one at Jessup University’s Rocklin
California campus and another at its Multnomah Biblical Seminary campus in Portland
Each cohort will include 8-12 pastoral leaders who will work with mental health practitioners and scientific advisors over a two-year period
These pastors will participate in six in-person sessions
engaging in discussions on the latest scientific findings related to trauma
and collaboration with science advisors to integrate these insights into their ministry contexts
“The challenges pastors and their congregations face are multifaceted
ranging from the lingering effects of pandemic-related isolation to the increasing polarization of society and have heightened the demand for mental health support
This initiative is an opportunity for science and theology to work hand-in-hand in service to the church,” said Dr
Jessup seeks to bridge the gap between science and faith
equipping pastoral leaders with scientifically informed strategies to foster resilience both in themselves and their communities.”
