BALTIMORE (WBFF) — The Harford County sheriff said he's working with county and school officials--their top priority to keep staff and students safe after the fatal shooting at Joppatowne High School.
The shooting happened inside the school almost three weeks ago and the community remains focused on school security
Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler weighed in Thursday on Fox45 Morning News on the new security measures put in place at Joppatowne High and other things in place to help keep students and staff safe
working with our SROs ((school resource officers) on what ways they can turn to using technology to try to make schools safer
Our deputies actually went down yesterday with people from Harford County schools to view some systems in Dorchester County," Gahler said
new safety measures at Joppatowne High School include more safety personnel from the school district and the sheriff's office and temporarily banning backpacks
The shooting happened September 6th with 15-year-old Warren Grant
Another 16-year-old student was arrested for Grant's murder
With metal detectors comes security personnel to work them
It all comes at a large expense to the taxpayers
but there are a finite number of dollars you can use for these types of things
So there has to be some reasonable precautions taken," Gahler said
Gahler is also warning of increased threats made against schools
Just this week he says his deputies arrested a student for threatening on social media to shoot up a school
"We did make an arrest in one yesterday morning
But 99% (of those threats) are not met with any ill," Gahler said
That was my guy; every day he was smiling every day," says Noah
Those are the memories Noah will carry on of his cousin Warren Grant
who was shot and killed at Joppatowne High School Friday afternoon
Noah says he was leaving class when he heard the gunshot
He said other students kept saying Grant's name; he says he remembers trying to get to his cousin but teachers stopped him from getting close
"And it's harder when you see him laying there like it's different," says Noah
hundreds of people gathered at a basketball court in Edgewood for a vigil
they also had conversations about how to reduce violence in schools and in communities
A conversation Sandra Espinosa says needs to happen more often before incidents like the shooting on Friday
"Kids should never be able to get a hold of guns; bottom line
kids should never have the opportunity to put a gun in their hand," says Sandra Espinosa
Superintendent Sean Bulson sent out a video message to parents about the incident
Bulson shared some of the plans the school board plans to make as students go back to the classrooms
"Our first priority is to ensure that we address the immediate needs at Joppatowne High School so the community can begin healing
Every school has services and staff in place who are ready and available to support your students as we collective process and grieve the loss of one of our own," says Dr
But students like Jameir say returning may be harder for students
"Some people not gonna want to come to school; some people are not gonna want to talk
Some people are not gonna want to go to class; some people are not gonna want to do anything at all because it really hits different for some people that was there
so people that wasn't there or their relationships they had with him," says Jamier

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — The suspect involved in the Harford County school shooting that left one student dead had interactions with law enforcement dating back to 2022
but getting the details will be nearly impossible due to current state laws
Warren Grant, 15, was shot and killed inside a Joppatowne High School bathroom on Sept
was arrested shortly after the incident and is facing first and second-degree murder
and handgun charges; Prince is being charged as an adult
Maryland state law prohibits law enforcement from telling school systems details about a student’s criminal past

delinquent behavior by young people should not negatively impact their ability to succeed later in life,” said Michael Sharp
spokesperson for the Department of Juvenile Services
Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said Prince has had “10 interactions” with law enforcement since 2022
but he did not elaborate as to what those interactions were; Sheriff Gahler said Prince was either a victim
State law does allow superintendents of school systems to be briefed on some details involving students
if the crime is one of several “reportable offenses.” Those offenses include violent crime and others
it’s unclear what that communication process is
Not sharing too many details with the public
“All partner agencies must always operate under the fact that a person is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty,” Boatwright said
Boatwright noted that law enforcement doesn’t want to tip off a suspect
who could then flee or potentially destroy evidence as the investigation unfolds
Meanwhile, Prince was denied bail during a hearing Monday

“One of the students — he’s actually my neighbor — he helped bring him out of the bathroom and tried to help him stay alive.”
Community members have been trying to support each other since the shooting
“A lot of times we tend to go through tragedy alone,” said Joppatowne High School substitute teacher Adam Shellenbarger

“I wish we were sitting here talking about a better outcome for the young man,” Gahler said
He said the 16-year-old pulled a gun on Grant during a fight in the restroom at Joppatowne High School before leaving school grounds
Other students brought Grant into the hallway
where the principal and another staff member found him
who police declined to identify because he is a juvenile

How did he get his hands on this gun?” Gahler said
