Scottie Scheffler just played one of the most impressive tournaments we've seen in years
There isn’t much more to say about Scottie Scheffler than what the leaderboard is telling us
Scheffler crested 30 under and pushed himself one better
gaining six shots on the field average every single day
Jordan Spieth knows exactly what we’re talking about
Spieth saw it up close on Thursday and Friday when he played with Scheffler in their shared hometown
Spectators lined the ropes on every hole for the Dallas residents and were treated to an opening 61 from Scheffler
and then he followed it with the best second round
But nothing like what Spieth could have felt — breaking 70 twice in two days and losing by 12
He went with “inspiring,” partly because of their relationship away from the PGA Tour.
Spieth and Scheffler grew up in each other’s respective orbits, their high schools just six miles apart. Each earned invites as amateurs into the Byron Nelson tournament
and Spieth actually one-upped Scheffler’s Longhorn tenure by claiming a national title in his one year on campus
He then went and won the Masters as a 21-year-old
Open a couple months later and won the PGA Tour Player of the Year award a few months after that.
Spieth was an inspiration for Scheffler back then
Spieth calls Scheffler inspiring because the last few years have not only redefined what great looks like on Tour
Or the recreational matches played between the two at home in Dallas.
it wasn’t that long ago I was definitely better than him
and now I’m definitely not right now,” Spieth said Sunday afternoon
“I hate admitting that about anybody
but I just watched it those first two rounds
and like — I’ve got to get better
Spieth has been rounding into form himself, working his way back from offseason wrist surgery
He’s playing like one of the 30 best players in the world
and is now painfully reminded of just how far away from Scheffler he still is
without spectators — just playing alongside each other at Royal Oaks or Maridoe or Dallas National — they help Spieth out
That’s how consistently great Scheffler has become
“I play a lot of golf with him in town here,” Spieth reiterated
“I know if I’m able to clip him when we’re playing at home
That’s just the way it’s been the last few years
But this mix of soft jealousy or low-key admiration hits a bit harder when it comes from Spieth
He’s got more major wins than Scheffler does
Spieth has been stuck on 13 for three years.
“It’s inspiring what he’s doing,” Spieth continued
“It makes me want to work harder and be better
especially after watching him for two days and just getting my butt kicked
it would have been hard to be at 18-under in two rounds
I don’t think I’ve ever done that
“So just getting your butt kicked right there face-to-face at this tournament really stinks.”
The only consolation for Spieth came in the final two holes of the tournament
While Spieth was packing up his things and getting ready to head to Philadelphia for next week’s Truist Championship — an event he needed a sponsor’s exemption to access — Scheffler was busy making a lame bogey on the 71st hole and a basic par on the 72nd

A reminder: This is ONLY players who have Rookie of the Year MLB eligibility
and ONLY a look at potential help for 2025
here’s a look at the top prospects who can help your fantasy roster this season
but the outfielder is still performing well and shown how he is far from a one-category player in that timeframe
He ended his weekend with a three-hit effort against Toledo on Friday
and he also added a stolen base to go with it
Anthony is the best prospect in baseball whether you’re considering it from a fantasy perspective or not
The Red Sox may want to see him driving the baseball on a more consistent basis before they make him a part of their MLB roster
but it’s very hard to imagine Anthony isn’t going to see time with Boston in the coming weeks
I said Anthony was going to stay at the top of this list until he gets the call
but for the first time in the first month-plus of the season
Lawlar went 0-for-9 over his last two games
but that ended a streak of four consecutive multi-hit games including a four-hit effort April 30
Lawlar is doing everything he can to get back to Arizona
and while there’s no room in the infield right now
you have to think the D-Backs will come to the conclusion soon that this is a bit of a waste
Shaw failed in his time with the Cubs to open the year
and those who didn’t can just look at those stats
You know how many young players faltered to begin their career and still went on to become excellent players
Shaw started out slowly after being demoted to Triple-A
but the infielder has turned a corner even with a hitless final two games over the weekend
Shaw isn’t guaranteed to help fantasy rosters in 2025
but there’s obviously enough talent for him to be a contributor in redraft leagues this summer
He wouldn’t be on this list if that wasn’t the case
Chandler was impressive again Thursday with a season-high nine strikeouts over five innings while allowing just an unearned run against Triple-A Omaha
The right-hander has not allowed more than two runs in any outing thus far this year
and while he’s not missing bats at an exceptional rate
there’s more than enough punchouts to go with weak contact and a lack of self-inflicted damage to be excited about what he’s doing in the International League
and while the Pirates may not provide a ton of win chances
his stuff is good enough to roster him and adding him to lineups against all but the best teams in the sport
Misiorowski has been fantastic for Nashville in 2025 outside of one start where he allowed five runs
WIth two pitches that grade 70 in his fastball and curve -- you could argue the movement and velocity on his heater make it an 80-grade pitch -- to go with a strong slider
there’s no question Misiorowski has the stuff to be a starter
The question is whether he can throw enough quality strikes for that stuff to play
as free passes have been an issue since being drafted in the second round back in 2022
Add in the fact that the Brew Crew have dealt with injuries to their rotation
and Misorowski is a name fantasy managers need to pay close attention to
Arjun Nimmala has shown flashes of brilliance since being a first-round pick in 2023
but those flashes have often been followed by spurts of frustrations
Nimmala has done the opposite of frustrate
He’s homered four times in his last ten games
and is slashing .295/.374/.547 over 23 games with High-A Vancouver
Nimmala has easy plus power in his right-handed bat with an approach that gets better each year
and while he does have some swing-and-miss profile
his ability to make hard contact gives him a decent chance for average
He isn’t likely to be a major stolen-base threat with average speed
but he has the actions and enough athleticism -- with a quality throwing arm -- to stick at short
and it’s great to see him tapping into it in his second full season
The Athletics have their top prospect in the majors in Nick Kurtz
and their second best prospect could be up soon in Colby Thomas
the outfielder is now hitting .296/.364/.504 with five homers and a pair of steals over 31 games
Thomas has a swing from the right side that suggests he’ll hit for quality power at the next level
and his plus speed gives him a chance to steal 20 bags in the majors
He does strike out at a less-than-spectacular rate with 288 over his last two full seasons
it’s not out of the question that he’ll hit for a decent average despite the punchouts
but he’s someone to keep an eye on in redraft leagues with a great chance of helping the A’s in 2025
Trey Yesavage was Toronto’s first-round pick the year after Nimmala
and he was viewed as one of the steals of the 2024 draft after ‘sliding’ to the 20th pick out of East Carolina
and after throwing six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts on Thursday
he’s now forged an ERA of 2.31 with a 36/8 K/BB over 23 1/3 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .163 average for Low-A Dunedin
Yesavage has three well above-average pitches in his fastball
splitter and slide while mixing in a solid curve
The command needs work -- most pitchers who are still 21-years-old do -- but he generally throws strikes with those four pitches
It’d be nice to see Yesavage at a higher level considering his experience
but it’s tough to complain about these results
Griffin Herring was a sixth-round pick by the Yankees out of LSU in 2024
and to say his stock has risen over the first month of the season is quite the understatement
He allowed just his second run of the season Thursday for Low-A Tampa
and in the process he struck out 11 without issuing a walk
That gives him a 0.60 ERA and 39/10 K/BB for the Tarpons over a not-so-small sample of five starts and 30 innings
The 21-year-old offers a plus change that allows a low-to-mid 90 mph fastball to play up
and he’ll also mix in a decent change for good measure
Add in solid command of those offerings and Herring has the stuff to be a mid-rotation arm
and while that doesn’t sound super exciting on the surface
he’s the type of player that can be underrated in dynasty/keeper leagues

SOUTH JORDAN — Parents of a missing South Jordan teen pleaded for their daughter to come home safely Sunday as they retraced some of her last-known steps
Alisa Petrov, 15, was last seen on April 21, and South Jordan police have characterized her as a “runaway juvenile who is endangered.”
Parents Nikolai and Olga Petrov said Sunday afternoon they were concerned about several possibilities
including whether their daughter was lured away by an adult or that she was potentially trafficked
“That’s what we are suspecting at the moment,” Olga Petrov told KSL TV
The mother said she dropped her daughter off at her school classes in American Fork on Monday
she didn’t make it to the classroom,” Olga Petrov said
“The teachers said she never saw her that day.”
the parents said Alisa went to a nearby gas station where teens often go for snacks and told two boys that she planned to run away
don’t do it,’ but I guess she went for it anyway,” Olga Petrov said
the parents said they learned that Alisa got someone to give her a ride to the UTA FrontRunner station at 6786 W
where she then boarded the train and traveled to Provo
The parents and police said Alisa approached multiple people about helping her in her journey
“She asked a girl to get her a ticket in exchange of cash for the bus to Las Vegas,” Olga Petrov said
The 15-year-old was last seen at the Provo FrontRunner station at 690 S
The Petrovs said though their daughter was always on her phone
including during their excursion to the ski slopes the Sunday before her disappearance
she has not been active on social media over the past 13 days
it might be really dangerous,” Nikolai Petrov said
The couple said they had spoken with Alisa within the past 6 months about talking online to strangers
including in places like Discord and Snapchat
and they instructed her to delete contacts she didn’t know
They said they had checked her daughter’s phone in the days prior to her appearance
and there was nothing to suggest she was going to run away
The family set up its own website for Alisa and they pleaded Sunday afternoon for her safe return
“(Our) whole life is upside down right now,” Olga Petrov said
A police spokesperson told KSL TV on Sunday that there were no updates on the case
Anybody with information or knowledge of Alisa’s whereabouts is asked to contact law enforcement immediately
including by calling the Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center at 801-840-4000

Jordan Spieth chips in for seventh birdie in final round on No. 12 at THE CJ CUP
Jordan Spieth won’t catch his fellow Texan Scottie Scheffler at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson Sunday, but with his lowest round in nearly a half-decade in the books, Spieth can take plenty of momentum and confidence into the busy summertime stretch on the PGA TOUR.
Spieth shot a 9-under 62 Sunday at TPC Craig Ranch, his lowest 18-hole score on TOUR since August 2021.
He got as high as second on the leaderboard as Scheffler continued his march closer the title – he sat 31-under par through 14 holes – but as Spieth heads into next week at the Truist Championship, and continues his own hunt for the career Grand Slam at the PGA Championship, he’s on a run of four-straight weeks of top-20 finishes.
Spieth made five birdies on his opening nine holes Sunday, including a run of three in a row on Nos. 4-6. He made back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11-12 before adding one more circle on the card on par-4 14th before one more to close out his day on No. 18.
His 62 tied his lowest final-round effort on the PGA TOUR.
Jordan Spieth spins approach back for birdie on No. 11 at THE CJ CUP
Spieth hasn’t won on TOUR since the RBC Heritage in 2022 and shut things down in August as he underwent surgery on his left wrist. He opened his 2025 campaign at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and finished tied for fourth the next week at the WM Phoenix Open. He added one more top-10 to his ledger – a tie for ninth at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches – and has since gone T12-T14-T18 in his previous three tournaments starting at the Valero Texas Open.
It's been a steady if unspectacular season – he’s 31st in Strokes Gained: Total so far in 2025 – but this recent run of good play, along with Sunday’s final tally, is nothing but positive.
“The ultimate goal is consistent play, but it's not bogey avoidance or anything like that. I'm not changing strategy. It's just that my mechanics are just getting a little bit better each week,” Spieth said. “I'm able to do sufficient stuff maybe that I wasn't able to do last year, that maybe my wrist is holding me back, I'm not sure. I feel really good about what we're working on.”
With the PGA Championship around the corner, Spieth’s own chase for a career Grand Slam was again brought to the forefront of many in the golf world after Rory McIlroy’s green jacket triumph in April. There haven’t been the brutal heartbreaks and the ongoing question about Spieth’s chase, with Augusta National playing host to the same April tradition year after year, but with McIlroy checking the game’s biggest box, well, what about Spieth?
"It's obviously a very challenging week for him. It was harder than anybody, maybe ever trying to win the Masters,” Spieth said on the CBS broadcast Sunday afternoon. “To be that far from his most recent major as well, and then to go do it — it was very inspiring."
Good play and good vibes have Spieth ready for his own attempt at history.

The Eagles announced on Wednesday that they have exercised the fifth-year option for Jordan Davis
the 13th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft
The defensive tackle cracked the rotation as a rookie in 2022
playing in 13 games to earn a spot on the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team before starting all 34 regular-season games in the 2023 and 2024 seasons
Davis stepped up for the Eagles' defense in the 2024 NFC Championship and Super Bowl LIX victories
and 5.5 sacks during his time in the league
"We have tremendous confidence and faith in Jordan Davis," Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman said
"You just see a guy who elevated in the postseason and really counted on him continuing to develop and that's what this is
you continue to develop and you continue to get better and that's what I think we're seeing from Jordan."
I think that's why you see him continuing to get better
I feel like every time you guys ask me about somebody
I kind of start talking about how good of a teammate he is
This guy is infectious around the team and what he brings," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said about Davis prior to Super Bowl LIX
"He just brings so much to the team as far as his personality
He had a big sack last game that we played
and he's been very important to this defense."
Davis has brought his Georgia Bulldog pedigree to Philadelphia
as the former 2021 National Champion has appeared in two Super Bowls in three seasons with the Eagles
native has started all 17 regular-season games in back-to-back seasons with the Eagles after working hard to improve his shape and condition during the offseason
"I think Jordan has been doing better and better here as of late
and I do think he's improving," Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio said
Davis will head into Year 4 looking to continue the improvement he has made over the last three seasons
And the Georgia Bulldogs remain a strong presence in Philadelphia
"My mom (Shay Allen) is a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan
so she loves it more than I do and I'm just ready to get out there and see the team
I visited the Eagles and that visit was special
That they really cared about their players
I'm excited to get there," Davis said after being drafted in 2022
"I feel like defensive line is an unselfish position – it can get selfish if you make it – but I think the guys that we have
and the guys that I play with are unselfish as hell
They will give you the shirt off their back and that's just the type of people they are
happy for other people when they make plays
and that's all you can hope for." – Written by Liam Wichser

Jordan Spieth is finding his form at an opportune time
The Dallas native closed in 9-under 62 on Sunday at the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson
the 62 being Spieth's lowest score on the PGA Tour since 2021
He gained 6.464 strokes on the field Sunday
his best performance since the final round of the 2023 Masters
After offseason wrist surgery and a few years of questioning whether Spieth could return to peak form
and Spieth needs the Wanamaker Trophy to become the seventh golfer to win the career Grand Slam
It's something he talked about with CBS Sports' Amanda Balionis in his post-round interview
and he said seeing McIlroy accomplish the feat last month at Augusta National was inspiring
but it's not bogey avoidance or anything like that," Spieth said after his round
It's just that my mechanics are just getting a little bit better each week
I'm able to do sufficient stuff maybe that I wasn't able to do last year that maybe my wrist is holding me back
The finish at his hometown event will be Spieth's third top 10 of 2025
and his worst finish in his past five starts was a T-28 at the Valspar Championship
and I know that you can bounce out of them literally in a hole or two," he said
you have to have a lot of rounds that are bad in order to not feel good
But the good news is bipolarness on the greens can bounce back to positive pretty quickly."
Spieth was going to finish at least 10 shots behind fellow Dallas native Scottie Scheffler
who Spieth played with the first two days and plays with often during off weeks
It makes me want to work harder and be better
especially after watching him for two days and just getting my butt kicked," Spieth said
"So just getting your butt kicked right there face to face at this tournament really stinks
to finish to backdoor into a top 10 or top 5 or whatever ends up happening."
Spieth is in the field at the upcoming Truist Championship on a sponsor exemption
his second of what will be five straight starts on Tour
where he went 5-0-0 during the 2022 Presidents Cup and where he had his first chance to complete the career grand slam in 2017
though he got beat by good friend Justin Thomas
Despite his inability to chase down Scheffler
Spieth is still playing in top form just ahead of the PGA Championship
Spieth admits that he is at a bit of a loss on how to top Scheffler.
“It’s inspiring what he’s doing,” Spieth said of Scheffler on Sunday, per Golf.com's Sean Zak
“It makes me want to work harder and be better
especially after watching him for two days and just getting my butt kicked.
USA; Jordan Spieth reacts after making birdie on the ninth hole during the second round of the THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson golf tournament
I don’t think I’ve ever done that," Spieth added.
“So just getting your butt kicked right there face-to-face at this tournament really stinks.”
As for the Truist Championship, the PGA Tour initially announced Spieth would be an alternate for the tournament
It was later revealed that Spieth along with Rickie Fowler were among the golfers granted a sponsor's exemption to play in the Truist Championship.
"Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Gary Woodland have secured three of the four sponsor’s exemptions for next week," Zak detailed in a May 2
These exemptions allow the tournament's leadership to place select golfers in the field who did not qualify for the event.

Trouble may be brewing for Curtis and Portia
Curtis and Jordan were once a great love story on General Hospital
The couple had long-term potential but ultimately ended up divorced
Curtis (Donnell Turner) and Jordan (Tanisha Harper) were a happily married couple until Cyrus (ex-Jeff Kober) walked back into her life
Her long-ago undercover mission to take the bad guy down resurfaced
and it turned out Jordan didn’t do everything by the book
Then came secrets and lies as she tried to protect her family from Cyrus
He claimed that he could not be married to someone dishonest
Curtis immediately fell back in love with his ex
He found out she was also a liar when he discovered that Trina (Tabyana Ali) was his daughter
Portia didn’t learn from her mistake about Trina because she is at it again. She began with the truth when she told her husband that she switched Heather’s (Alley Mills) blood test, but is now lying again. Drew (Cameron Mathison) is blackmailing her, and instead of telling Curtis, she is going along with the blackmail
This could be the last straw for the Aurora CEO
Then there is Jordan. She has never really gotten over her ex. There was a budding relationship with Isaiah (Sawandi Wilson), but she ended things when she went undercover working for Sidwell (Carlo Rota)
Curtis knows his ex is up to something and is worried about her safety
He is suddenly hanging around her and acting very protective
Portia’s lies will eventually be revealed
Curtis gave her a pass before (more than he gave Jordan)
Portia should have been honest with her husband so they could have worked together against slimy Drew

Cleveland superstar Donovan Mitchell still has something to celebrate from the defeat
Mitchell broke a longstanding Michael Jordan playoff record
Sunday night's performance marked Mitchell's eighth straight Game 1 with 30 points or more

The Mississippi Supreme Court set an execution date for Richard Jordan
the state's oldest and longest-serving prisoner on death row
Jordan has been on death row in Mississippi since 1977 for the 1976 kidnapping and murder of Edwina Marter
the Court finds Jordan has exhausted all state and federal remedies for purposes of setting an execution date," the court wrote in its decision
the Court finds the State's Motion to Set Execution Date should be granted and a date should be set for execution of the death sentence imposed upon Jordan."
Mississippi's death row: A closer look as AG Fitch seeks execution dates for prisoners
claiming the 78-year-old had exhausted all legal remedies at the state and federal levels
In March, Jordan's attorneys filed a petition for a writ of certiorari with the U.S
they are asking the court to review a lower court's ruling
Open petition: Mississippi's oldest prisoner on death row seeks relief from U.S. Supreme Court
The federal court has not yet ruled on the petition, according to the Supreme Court's docket. The state asked for and was granted an extension to file its response by May 7
Jordan’s attorneys were seeking the review because they believe the state's highest court erred when it did not grant him access to mental health assistance in preparing a defense for himself at his 1998 sentencing hearing outside of an evaluation by a state psychiatrist
he was evaluated by a state psychiatrist whose report the court ordered be concurrently produced to the prosecution — meaning that the defense received no expert assistance independent of the prosecution," the petition says
that report — which directly undermined Petitioner’s mitigation case by failing to diagnose the serious post-traumatic stress disorder he suffered as a result of his combat service in Vietnam and instead (incorrectly) tarring him as an antisocial personality — became a weapon wielded against Petitioner."
They contend the court denied Jordan his right to due process
which is guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment
The sentencing hearing was the fourth time Jordan was sentenced to death for killing Marter

Jordan attempted to collect a ransom from her husband after he had already killed her
He was initially sentenced to death in 1977
but that sentence later was reduced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in exchange for his confession
He challenged that sentence in hopes of gaining the possibility of parole
he was resentenced to death for a second time
Subsequent challenges have also resulted in death sentences for Jordan
Mississippi currently has 37 prisoners on death row: 36 men and one woman
Modern history is littered with acts of tribute that would make imperial Rome proud.
When Vladimir Putin cut the oligarchs down to size by imprisoning Mikhail Khodorkovsky, one of his colleagues presented the Russian state, and by implication the president himself, with a Faberge egg
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer turns out to be a consummate groveller before US President Donald Trump
In the same vein, King Abdullah of Jordan could have presented Trump with a carpet or a pair of falcons. But he decided on something far more effective: he banned the Muslim Brotherhood.
as Middle East adviser on his National Security Council
In his first term, Trump toyed with the idea of banning the Brotherhood in the US
Abdullah’s move firmly places Jordan in the western camp’s push against political Islam
The move has already paid off. Millions of US dollars for Jordan’s largest desalination plant, which dried up when Trump dramatically cut the foreign aid budget, have been restored, Reuters reports
In banning an organisation that has been around officially in the kingdom since 1945
Abdullah has crossed a line that his father
was careful not to transgress in 47 years of rule
Hussein’s relationship with the Brotherhood was complex
but he was a master of balancing global alliances with the challenges he faced domestically
but they took no part in the conflict itself.
Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990 was another crisis for the king
Jordan suffered from the pressure the West put on it.
To face this huge challenge, Hussein was keen to keep the unity of his people behind him, so he formed a government in which five ministers were from the Muslim Brotherhood
Hussein saw the Brotherhood as a safety valve
defusing anger in the nation at a time of big conflicts
But Hussein never banned the group, even when he was pressured to do so by Arab leaders like Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser and Syria’s Hafez al-Assad
Hussein was no sympathiser and always had his own vision of Palestine
But he realised the Brotherhood was peaceful
defusing anger in the nation at a time of big conflicts. It also had one asset he cherished: the Brotherhood straddled the Palestinian-Jordanian divide within the kingdom.
Famously, when Mossad attempted to poison Hamas’s Khaled Meshaal on the streets of Amman, Hussein demanded the antidote from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
threatening to sever diplomatic relations and put the Israeli perpetrators on trial
He even strong-armed Netanyahu into releasing Hamas’s spiritual leader, Ahmed Yassin
No other Arab leader has managed to do this with Israel
relations with the Brotherhood went into steady decline.
Within months of becoming king in 1999, he expelled Hamas and agreed with the Qataris that their political bureau should move to Doha. He later stripped the Brotherhood’s charitable status and stopped their work
He thought he had weakened the Brotherhood to the point where he could contain it
even though the Brotherhood has never challenged the regime
even when that was happening around the Arab world
The Brotherhood did not raise the ceiling of its demands and chants during the Arab Spring. It did not call for the overthrow of the regime, unlike its cousins in Egypt and Tunisia
The regime’s other tactic was to encourage splits
Jordan granted a licence to a splinter group led by Abdul Majid Thuneibat under the name of the Muslim Brotherhood Association
It has used “licences” to crack down on the media arm of the affiliated political party
But each time Abdullah thought he had political Islamists licked
In recent days, journalists, commentators and former officials have all called for the Brotherhood to be banned. The Brotherhood’s calls to head towards the border and to besiege the Israeli embassy have been special irritants to the regime.
But no media campaign is launched in Jordan without someone planning it. There is nothing spontaneous about such campaigns. Just like Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE
no writer in Jordan is truly free to say what they want - and if they do
What we are seeing is not a popular campaign against the Brotherhood
but rather something that has been planned for a long time.
There have always been two currents of thinking in the royal court and defence establishment.
The first is to see Israel as Jordan’s existential enemy. This has been loudly voiced by Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, who declared that Israel had killed 30 years of effort to convince people that peace is possible
noting that the country is the third-poorest in terms of water in the world
The same current can be seen in other, less official ways. When Maher al-Jazi, a retired Jordanian soldier, killed three Israelis in September 2024 at the border crossing between Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, members of the army went to the family’s mourning ceremony in uniform.
The second current is to see Iran and political Islam as the kingdom’s main enemy - and this has a formidable
proponent: Jordan’s General Intelligence Department (GID)
an organisation so vast that it was described to me by one former foreign minister as Jordan’s parallel government.
is essentially a creation of Britain’s MI6
and today serves as the CIA’s main Arab partner in the region
The CIA provides undeclared financial assistance to the GID over and above the aid that Jordan gets from the US. The relationship between the two agencies is so close that the CIA has operatives permanently stationed at GID headquarters.
In fact, the GID has been regarded as so essential to the CIA’s regional intelligence-gathering on al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group during the “war on terror”, and on Syria and Yemen today, that one former CIA official told The Los Angeles Times he was allowed to roam the halls of the GID unescorted.
told the newspaper that GID interrogators were the best: “They’re going to get more information [from a terrorism suspect] because they’re going to know his language
his associates - and more about the network he belongs to.”
Another ex-CIA man, Michael Scheuer, who spent four years tracking Osama Bin Laden, told The Times in 2005: “Jordan is at the top of our list of foreign partners
and they are willing to help any way they can.” The GID was as capable and professional as Mossad
the GID will use the brave defiance of Safadi and others as cover
but it will itself pursue a very different agenda
closer to that of the US and Israel.
There are clear dangers to Abdullah in following this path. He has not yet gone down the full length of it, as the ban on the Muslim Brotherhood has not extended to the 31 deputies of the IAF - for the moment
But the ban is significant enough in itself. For one, the timing could not have been worse, coming around the Jewish festival of Passover, a celebration of joy and thanks, which became in the hands of religious Zionists at Al-Aqsa Mosque a crude show of religious conquest and hatred
More than 6,700 Jews entered the mosque’s courtyards to pray
according to the Waqf - more than all the Jewish worshippers who visited during the holidays last year
Israeli settler incursions at Al-Aqsa Mosque complex have increased by more than 18,000 percent since 2003
when Israeli authorities began allowing settlers to bypass the Islamic Waqf management and enter Islam’s third-holiest site
This was also a particularly bad year for Palestinian Christians. Reverend Munther Isaac, a Christian pastor and theologian, told MEE Live that this Easter was “the worst ever”.
secular - has left all ideas of living with its Arab neighbours and being part of the region behind
Israel is in full Crusader mode. It is clearly bent on dominating the region
and taking control of the holy sites over which the Hashemite kingdom has legal
international and historical custodianship
Netanyahu’s government is openly flouting the status quo. He boasted about the number of times he had defied former US President Joe Biden’s administration during a recent speech at a Jewish News Syndicate conference in Jerusalem
which the king in Amman has a duty to protect
Islamists are providing the only defence against a sustained attack by religious Zionists
Abdullah is patently failing to speak out against the blatant erosion of his custodianship of Jerusalem’s holy sites
which include Christian churches as well as the mosque
when all Muslims and Christians in the region are under sustained attack
is nothing less than an act of sabotage at a time of war
Abdullah has removed a safety valve that he needs more than ever before.
His father fostered the unity of the nation in moments of peril
and with each move that Netanyahu makes towards the annexation and ethnic cleansing of the West Bank
the anger of Jordanians is mounting.
The presence of the Brotherhood stopped Hamas recruiting in Jordan because of the agreement between them
There is nothing to stop either Hamas or any other resistance group from using Jordan as a base for attacks on Israel
Jordan’s ban of the Muslim Brotherhood is proof that the king can be bullied
Israel does not see a strong man in Jordan
It sees a shaky man who is under a lot of stress
If Israel sees that such a king prioritises a ban on the Brotherhood over speaking out against what is happening at Al-Aqsa
it can calculate that it could get away with its next project
King Abdullah should be careful not to follow Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s footsteps down the plughole of history. Even in his dying days
Abbas has not for one moment become less stubborn.
He will pathologically not reconcile with Hamas and other resistance groups
nor allow a government of national unity to form in either the West Bank or Gaza - even though it’s patently in the interests of Fatah and the PLO to do so.
The result is that Ramallah is crushed, ignored and despised by both Netanyahu and Trump, who now plans to eliminate the US security coordinator’s office to further downgrade ties with the Palestinian Authority
Trump’s contempt is the reward Abbas has received for prioritising a relationship with Washington over his fellow Palestinians
History will not treat him or the Hashemite kingdom kindly
