Vice President Kamala Harris has retreated from the public spotlight since her resounding loss to President-elect Donald Trump two weeks ago
As Democrats reel from a Republican takeover of Washington
capping a postelection period in which she has shifted back into the background of the Biden administration
President Joe Biden
who ceded the spotlight after he was pressured into ending his 2024 reelection bid
has resumed his role on the world stage with international meetings at the G20 and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation this past week
He will celebrate his 82nd birthday on Wednesday
and some of his allies say Harris may be all but forgotten
“She’s never been the party leader,” one Democratic strategist close to the White House said
“She couldn’t get through a primary on her own
so it’s fitting that she’d slink off to Hawaii while the party falls apart.”
Harris has appeared in public just a handful of times following her 2024 electoral loss to Trump
the light of America’s promise will always turn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting,” she said
HERE’S WHICH BIDEN EXECUTIVE ORDERS WILL BE THE FIRST TO GO UNDER TRUMP
but please know it’s going to be OK,” Harris continued
Harris also joined Biden for a pair of Veterans Day memorial services at Arlington National Cemetery, where First Lady Jill Biden appeared to give her the cold shoulder and reignited narratives of tensions between the Biden and Harris teams in the process
The vice president was next seen at the White House the following Tuesday
where she was greeted by administration staffers in between the West Wing and Eisenhower Executive Office Building ahead of a lunch with Biden
TRUMP CABINET PICKS: WHO’S BEEN TAPPED TO SERVE IN THE PRESIDENT-ELECT’S ADMINISTRATION
Harris’s schedule also gives little insight into what official duties the vice president has done over the past two weeks
“The Vice President will be in Washington
DC where she will receive briefings and conduct internal meetings with staff
These meetings will be closed press.”
Harris’s office declined to answer questions about her trip to Hawaii
what she and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff would be doing there
Democrats are currently working to approve as many of Biden’s judicial nominees as possible before surrendering control of the Senate
and the vice president would be needed in Washington to cast her tiebreaking votes if necessary
“She will definitely be available for any tie votes,” a Harris senior aide told NBC News
Another aide said those votes would wait until December when Harris returns from Hawaii
The break out of the public eye comes after an untraditional 100-day campaign for the presidency that ended in total defeat
HOW KAMALA HARRIS PLOWED THROUGH $1 BILLION
National pundits have thoroughly dissected her campaign
and critics on both sides of the aisle have openly questioned her campaign’s mismanagement of a historic war chest
Harris reportedly spent more than $1.5 billion in just 15 weeks on the campaign trail
None of Harris’s campaign shortfalls
have quelled speculation about her political future
A poll published by the University of California Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies found Harris atop a list of possible 2026 California gubernatorial candidates
Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has been floated as a Democratic presidential candidate for 2028
who previously served as California’s junior U.S
senator and the district attorney of San Francisco
far outpacing the second-place 13% posted by Rep

A poll published by Echelon Insights on Monday found Harris to be Democrats’ overwhelming favorite to be nominee again in 2028
The vice president earned 41% in Echelon’s poll
6% for Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg
and 6% for Harris’s own running mate

Proposed Community-Based Renewable Energy Project at Kalaoa
Background Information: On August 31, 2020, DHHL posted a legal ad in statewide newspapers
requesting applications to develop renewable energy projects on DHHL lands. Four parcels of DHHL land were offered
including: one parcel on O‘ahu; 1 parcel on Molokai
and 2 parcels on Hawai‘i Island (Kawaihae and Kalaoa)
The land identified in Kalaoa for renewable energy development is 100 acres of a 200-acre parcel (TMK (3) 7-3-010:007) located on the mauka side of the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway
The 100-acre site offered at Kalaoa was designated for Industrial use in the 2002 Hawai‘i Island Plan. In the 2020 Kealakehe-La‘i ‘Ōpua Regional Plan
beneficiaries identified the development of “Renewable Energy Initiative – PV Farm in ‘O‘oma (Kalaoa)” as a Priority Project. Specifically
the Regional Plan Priority Project supported the development of a PV Farm on DHHL lands at Kalaoa that were designated for commercial and industrial use. The PV project would participate in the Hawaiian Electric Company’s (HECO’s)
competitive bidding process with the goal of securing a Power Purchase Agreement. The Priority Project would include partnerships with DHHL
and local partners within the North Kona region
plus battery storage project at the Kalaoa site. DHHL will be conducting a Virtual Beneficiary Consultation meeting

The National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Kona area of the Big Island until 8 p.m
today because of the threat of flooding caused by excessive rainfall
emergency management officials reported heavy rainfall over Kailua-Kona
with water on Kuakini Highway near Lako Street
Rain was falling at a rate of up to 1 inch per hour
Rain rates are starting to decrease and should continue to dissipate throughout the evening
Some locations where flooding is possible include Kailua-Kona
Minor flooding could happen on roads and in poor drainage areas and streams
The public is advised to stay away from streams
drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding
Hawaiian Electric is launching a new program where it may preemptively shut off power for approximately 19,300 customers in high-wind areas on the Big Island that are at risk of wildfire during dry conditions
Hawaiian Electric does not intend to initiate PSPS on that day
This was the date set by the company to have its internal systems
protocols and communication plans ready in the event of extreme weather conditions
Hawaiian Electric will continue coordinating and sharing its plans with public agencies
This program will impact approximately 19,300 customers on the Big Island located between Kohala and Waikōloa in North Hawai‘i
between Kalaoa and Hōlualoa in West Hawai‘i and between Mauna Kea Access Road and Waiki‘i Ranch
these areas have a combination of risk factors for wildfires
and historically higher rates of wildfires
“This is our last line of defense to keep communities safe from the threat of wildfires
We understand shutting off the power can create hardships
We urge customers to prepare for a PSPS the same way they would prepare for a hurricane or other hazard that can result in extended power outages,” said Jim Alberts
Hawaiian Electric senior vice president and chief operations officer
Customers are urged to prepare for emergencies and the possibility of extended power outages during high winds and dry conditions
A PSPS will only be activated in an area if weather data
including statements from the National Weather Service
indicate conditions for heightened wildfire risk
these factors can result in downed trees or flying debris contacting power lines and damaging electrical infrastructure
Hawaiian Electric will notify the public and coordinate with government officials
first responders and emergency response agencies
Hawaiian Electric will provide public notifications through news releases
online outage maps and updates to its website
shutoff may occur with little or no notice
power will remain shut off so long as hazardous weather conditions persist
power lines must be inspected and any damage must be repaired before service can be restored
This may involve ground crews and aerial inspections using helicopters and drones
This process may result in extended outages lasting several hours
possibly even days depending on the location and extent of any damage
shutting off power has broad impacts across the community
Hawaiian Electric has coordinated with stakeholders from across government and the private sector
essential service providers and businesses
to ensure public awareness and safety during a PSPS activation
Customers on life support with special medical needs are urged to prepare now for the possibility of extended power outages
Hawaiian Electric asks those customers to provide their contact information to receive future notifications before a PSPS by submitting an online Medical Needs Communications Form
Hawaiian Electric plans to continue to enhance and refine its PSPS program to make it more targeted and effective
These plans currently include implementing additional enhanced technology
weather forecasting targeting high-risk areas
For more information and maps, call Hawaiian Electric’s PSPS hotline at 1-844-483-8666 toll-free or go to hawaiianelectric.com/PSPS

I'd started brewing beer when I was 21 at college in Oregon and kept doing it as a passion
After graduating from college in the 2008 economy crash
after graduation I was laid off before I even started
so I worked part-time jobs and brewed on the side. After four years of unstable temporary jobs
I enrolled in Siebel Institute of Technology — out of Munich
My first job was as a keg washer in Portland
but I was lucky enough to get the paid gig of keg washing
I even helped someone start a brewery in Portland
In 2018 Big Island Brewhaus was looking for a head brewer
They approached me with a two-year contract
then they moved my family out to Waimea and I started to run the brewery.
As my contract came to an end, the vice president of operations at a nearby private residential club community called Kohanaiki contacted me to see if I'd be interested in being the master brewer at their brewery
just as the pandemic worsened and everyone went into lockdown.
The brewery had been shut down and vacant for quite some time before I came along
When guests started coming in early October 2020 and everything slowly started reopening
that's when the ball started rolling.
This brewery is much smaller than I experienced in past jobs
At the corporate breweries where I worked before
so I need to pay attention to the budget and spend at least a few hours every day answering emails
I prefer the structured system and being tuned in on the business side
Other breweries I've worked at didn't have a budget
so it was easy to go a little crazy spending
The best part about my job is I can brew whatever I like
We mostly create beers that are around 6.2% alcohol
as does rosé beer and other fruity variations
I'm currently working on a spiked apple cider beer — Belgian double style
which I'll add to the beer when aging for a rich flavor.
but eventually I had to give the people what they want
Since we're a microbrewery attached to the resort
and listen to their requests of what they'd like to drink
I'm open to brewing anything and everything
I'm also able to turn over funky ideas quickly
In corporate brewing you have to make a certain number of kegs for that one beer
but here I can make just one keg of a beer before moving onto another to keep it varied.
I can also more easily work with different yeasts
brewers are held to a style of yeast in-house
I can make small batches with different yeasts
I don't even need to use the same yeast again
A challenge I've faced with brewing on the island is water quality
I've lived in places where the water quality is good
I use reverse-osmosis water from nearby Kona
and other elements to get the flavor profile I want.
Another difference of brewing on the island compared to the mainland is access to local exotic fruits
The club has an onsite biodynamic community farm
and my friend also has a family farm where I can visit and buy different fruits
Anytime I need inspiration or want to see what fruits are available
I allow the flavors and fruits to guide me
rather than creating a recipe and not having the right ingredients to carry it out
As the island began welcoming back visitors and members around October when the pre-testing COVID travel program started
I also showcased different German beers to introducing unique styles of German alcohol to club members.
We've also recently opened to "meet the brewer" events
I show the members what I do and teach them about beer
from the specifics of the brewing process to the variety of flavor profiles
where they can try all the different types of beers we have on tap
The brewery is near the 18th hole of the resort's golf course
so when I first joined Kohanaiki I thought it would be great to set up space for golfers to have a pour after their game
We began offering this last year after reopening
I've been thinking of brewing a Mexican mocha
and a touch of lactose for a darker side beer
There's also a champagne-style beer in the works
so it would be a base beer with half grapes.
I have many ideas and time to explore them
It's just one of the many perks of working at a private microbrewery

NORBERT LEE ALCAIDE …gives himself up to police
HAWAII COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT KONA CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION SECTION LIEUTENANT HENRY W. HICKMAN PHONE: 326-4230 APRIL 25, 2000 G-26470
Big Island police have arrested a 26-year-old Kailua-Kona man in connection with a burglary, assault and sexual assault that occurred Thursday (April 20, 2000) in Kalaoa, North Kona.
The suspect, Norbert Lee Alcaide, was arrested at 3 p.m. Tuesday after he turned himself in at the Kona police station. He is being held in the Kona cellblock pending further investigation into possible charges of burglary, assault and sexual assault, all in the first degree.
An investigation determined that the victim, an adult female, was alone in her Kalaoa apartment Thursday night when she was attacked by a naked male brandishing a knife.
The suspect struck the victim and sexually assaulted her. He also cut the victim’s face and neck with the knife. The victim was able to escape from her apartment and run to a neighbor’s residence for help. She was later taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.
