Psychology doctoral student awarded UT System research fellowship
Alyssa Kaser is grateful for the close connection and memories she has shared with her grandparents
whose stories and family traditions shaped her childhood – even if bittersweet at times
she watched her grandfather live with Parkinson’s disease and navigate the changes brought on by its progression
His illness revealed to her the importance of strong support systems of care
and this realization sparked her desire to help other older adults facing similar challenges
she began volunteering and working at senior centers and nursing homes
“I found so much joy in spending time with older adults and learning from their wisdom,” she said
“It wasn’t just about assisting with daily tasks – but helping them feel valued and connected
Those experiences taught me how vital it is to be present for older adults
and help them retain a sense of purpose and meaning during their final stages of life.”
an expert in neuropsychological assessment whose research is focused on early detection of cognitive change in aging populations
Kaser’s achievements have garnered accolades from the UT System
which awarded her a Jess Hay Chancellor’s Graduate Student Research Fellowship for 2024-25
The fellowship supports her dissertation research on functioning and cognitive performance in a diverse community sample
emphasizing the need to develop culturally sensitive diagnostic tools and interventions
“I am truly honored to be selected as a Jess Hay Fellow,” Ms
“Receiving this prestigious recognition is such meaningful validation of the work I’ve done in the aging and dementia field
I’m so grateful for this acknowledgment and am excited about how it will propel my research and career forward.”
The fellowship program was established by former UT System Regent Jess Hay
a Dallas financial executive and community leader who passed away in 2015
Hay was an advocate and visionary leader for the UT System
serving from 1977 to 1989 as a Regent and for 2½ years as its Chairman
four graduate student research fellowships of $15,000 each rotate among the 13 UT institutions
benefiting two academic and two health institutions every year
The program is designed to tie graduate education to timely and high-quality research benefiting the state of Texas
“Alyssa has worked with me for the past three years and has helped to advance research related to the clinical connections of cognitive complaints
use of language biomarkers for early detection of dementia
and application of screening instruments for identification of those at risk for cognitive decline
These efforts have resulted in 13 conference presentations and seven publications,” Dr
Kaser’s receipt of a Jess Hay Fellowship speaks to her promise as a clinician and researcher
and potential to make important contributions to the field of neuropsychology
“Her commitment to understanding the whole individual and finding ways to help not only patients
contributes to her passion to support our aging community and find ways to ease their burden,” Dr
Kaser’s early motivations came from the relationships she built in her work and personal life
She was born and raised in the small rural Midwestern town of Earlville
She was intent on pursuing a career in psychology
she conducted research on veterans with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and worked as a caregiver for a woman with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
“My patient taught me so much about respecting someone’s independence and dignity
Her care was a process of constant adaptation
filled with painful emotions but also small victories
I found a deep sense of purpose in adapting her routine and activities to maximize her independence and quality of life,” Ms
She hoped to combine her experience with research and advocacy to make a positive impact on those affected by aging and dementia
in psychology with concentrated coursework in neuroscience
she worked as a research coordinator in the Brain Health Lab at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
She investigated multimodal interventions – combining mobile applications with lifestyle activities – and the causes of symptom progression in older adults at risk for Alzheimer’s
At UTSW, Ms. Kaser serves as an officer in the Association of Neuropsychology Students in Training within the UT Southwestern Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology
She also volunteers with and has presented research findings at the Texas Alzheimer’s Research and Care Consortium
a collaboration of 11 of the state’s leading medical research institutions working to improve early diagnosis
and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease
Kaser plans to pursue postdoctoral training in clinical neuropsychology
with an emphasis in neurodegenerative disorders
She hopes to work where she can combine clinical care and research

“During a dayslong heat wave last week
an Oxnard man died while working on a farm in the Oxnard Plain
Agencies are still investigating whether heat was a factor in his death
board president for the nonprofit Friends of Fieldworkers
said that while it is not yet clear whether Pimentel’s death was heat related
the Ventura-based group was concerned about local fieldworkers throughout last week’s scorching temperatures
The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office said Pimentel’s cause of death is still pending
The temperature alone doesn’t always predict danger
Part of what matters is how temperatures compare to what people are used to experiencing
People may be less acclimated to higher heat in coastal communities
a climate resilience project manager at the Public Health Institute in Oakland
Those communities also tend to have less air conditioning
because they have historically been cooler than some other spots
Heat kills more people than any other climate-related event
Climate change is causing more and frequent prolonged periods of extreme heat
Farmworkers have a significantly higher risk of heat-related mortality compared to the general workforce
according to a recent Congressional report
They also face other barriers to protect themselves from heat

Ramapo police charged a member of a rogue fire brigade with obstructing firefighters at a structure fire in Kaser
saying his actions could have delayed the response and jeopardized the safety of firefighters
It was the second reported incident in three months in which actions taken by members of the brigade
could have posed serious safety risks to the public
What is Matzilei Aish? Private fire brigade in Ramapo called 'rogue' by officials who encourage residents to call 911
of Monsey was charged with obstructing firefighter operations
second-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree obstructing government administration
The charges stem from Silberstein's reported actions at a Nov
Ramapo police identified Silberstein as part of Matzilei Aish, a non-certified brigade backed by some local Orthodox rabbis
Officials in the county and town have described their operation as rogue and dangerous
Ramapo police say that Silberstein approached the responding Monsey Fire Department truck
stretched the truck's supply line and attached it to a nearby hydrant without alerting firefighters
but the hose had not yet been connected to the fire truck
causing the line to fill the unconnected hose
"These actions could have resulted in a delay in firefighting operations
caused injury to firefighters or further unnecessary damage to the building," Ramapo Police Det
Matzilei Aish was formed to create a fire brigade that adhered to Jewish laws
But volunteers lack the training and proper equipment to fight fires
as well as Ramapo town and village officials
Some rabbinical leaders have encouraged residents through advertisements and word of mouth to call their emergency number instead of 911
Others within the Orthodox Jewish community
have echoed the concerns that the fire brigade
which officials have labeled "rogue," jeopardizes safety and that emergency responses should be handled by trained first responders
Matzilei Aish's spiritual leader, Rabbi Yehezkel Weiss, has said that the brigade is well-trained. Weiss said he advocated for the formation of Matzilei Aish as a unit that would follow Jewish law, known as Halakhah.
Monsey Fire Department boasts predominately Jewish volunteers who span the spectrum of Judaism
from non-religious and Reform to Orthodox and Hasidim
Other Ramapo departments also have Jewish volunteers
Fire officials contend their Jewish members' rabbis had approved of their joining the departments
Weiss had pointed to the Monsey Brewer Fire Department's recreational activities
have to do with residents' and first responders' safety
“This is a rogue fire department that needs to be brought to task,” Rockland County Sheriff Lou Falco said
We don’t know the abilities of this rogue fire department."
and the Ramapo police for their action in making an arrest and sending a message
mistakes like the one that led to this arrest can cost lives and ultimately we hope this sounds the alarm that this negligence needs to stop," Day said
Matzilei Aish went to 39 Phyllis Terrace to respond to a Monsey resident's complaint
Rockland County director of Fire and Emergency Services
The group diagnosed a problem with a dryer and instructed the resident not to use it
But the resident also called the Monsey Fire Department
Fire officials and Orange and Rockland utility workers found a deadly level of 1,500 parts per million of carbon monoxide inside the jackets of the heating units
Kear said all residents were treated on the scene by Hatzoloh and did not require hospitalization
"Matzilei Aish members' lack of how to properly investigate and assess a situation could have led to serious health issues for the occupants and possibly death," Kear said
"The existence of this group continues to pose a serious and dangerous threat to the community."
Breaking news for everyone's consumption
Health officials have issued a warning after two people fell sick with Listeriosis following consumption of soft cheese from Austria
The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) said no confirmed cases have yet been reported in Austria
One person in Germany and one person in the Czech Republic fell ill with listeriosis after eating cheese from a Tyrolean manufacturer
Care and Consumer Protection (BMSGPK) asked AGES to investigate the Listeria outbreak
Wilder Käser has initiated a recall of products and informed the public
The recall covers all batches of “Kleiner Stinker” up to date Feb
2025 and all batches of “Großer Stinker” cheese up to Feb
analyses carried out as part of internal quality assurance revealed that “Kleiner Stinker” and “Großer Stinker” from the Wilder Käser dairy were contaminated with Listeria
Company shut and Czech findingsAGES reported the company has been closed and commercial customers have been informed
No more products from the firm may be placed on the market
it cannot be ruled out that products are still available to private individuals or in the catering trade
Because of the high level of contamination with Listeria
authorities said it is strongly recommend that the affected products are not consumed under any circumstances
but disposed of or returned to the point of sale
Health officials in the Czech Republic warned against consumption of “Großer Stinker Weichkäse” with a weight of 290-grams
The cheese is produced by Wilder Käser in Austria and distributed in the Czech Republic by Tiroler Bauernstandl
Based on a consumer’s complaint of illness after consuming “Großer Stinker Weichkäse mit Rotkultur” from batch 4205 and with expiry date Dec
an inspection was initiated with help from local authorities
samples of the same product from batch 4507 were taken for laboratory testing
Results revealed that all samples significantly exceeded the European limit of 100 colony forming units per gram (CFU/g) for Listeria monocytogenes
Czech officials said information about the dangerous product was shared with other EU member states through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF)
About Listeria infectionsFood contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections
Anyone who has eaten any recalled product and developed symptoms of Listeria infection should seek medical treatment and tell their doctors about the possible Listeria exposure
anyone who has eaten any of the recalled products should monitor themselves for symptoms during the coming weeks because it can take up to 70 days after exposure to Listeria for symptoms of listeriosis to develop.
Symptoms of Listeria infection can include vomiting
Specific laboratory tests are required to diagnose Listeria infections
and people such as cancer patients who have weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of serious illnesses
Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild
their infections can lead to premature delivery
